"There is a future to be built more urgently and more ambitiously than anything achieved since the Post-War years."  - Social Enterprise Awards 2022
The event also included a video message from Welsh actor Michael Sheen, who is a patron of Social Enterprise UK. Introducing himself as “your number one fan”, Sheen said there was “a future to be built more urgently and more ambitiously than anything achieved since the post-war years”.
He added: “It's comforting to know that you're all there this evening, plotting, planning, and working out what you're going to do next to realise the reality of a fairer economy… You are there discovering new ways of designing justice in our systems and structures, thinking up bigger, bolder ambitions, and putting your mind to the long-term needs of future generations whilst addressing the urgency of the here and now.”

The writer, O. Dave Allen is a community activist and political commentator
MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica, January 25, 2022 - We the Jamaican people are at risk of becoming slaves again. We are a country with   95% African people. It’s a fact that the majority of the African population is at the bottom of the economic pyramid while the 5% at the apex are the minorities who control the economy. We all know that the economy is the superstructure that determines everything else, we also know that those who control the economy rules the country. It is time for majority rule.
Tumblr media
When the Chinese were commandeering the local retail and distributive business, it was of little concern to the traditional moneyed class.  Their long held sense of security is now threatened by the fact that the Chinese have cornered the retail business and have accumulated untold millions, buttressed by unaccountable billions of dollars of dubious origin with an insatiable and avaricious appetite of the tiger spreading their tentacles devouring  all that is in its path.
There is an insidious war that is being waged by the Chinese business interest that will undermine all and every local Jamaican business. We are not here dealing with the compliant Chinese shopkeepers of yesteryears; but a contrived network, led by the Chinese State to dominate and control the Jamaica economy with Montego Bay as the entry point, bolstered by the powerful Association of Chinese Enterprises in Jamaica (ACEJ), a non-profit organization.
This mega conglomerate is akin to the Dutch East India Company (The Dutch East India Company historically a military-political-economic complex rather than a pure trading or shipping company).
Tumblr media
Can you imagine the consequences when the Chinese would have established their own bank and  formal financial intermediaries?
Recently China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), was awarded the Government of Jamaica funded US$274.5-million Montego Bay Perimeter Road Project, which includes the rehabilitation of Barnett Street and West Green Avenue, as well as the construction of the Long Hill bypass and a drainage study of the Montego Bay bypass area is also to be conducted under the project.
This catalysis project strengthens the presence of the Chinese in Jamaica and serves as beachhead in Montego Bay to supplant the hegemony of the United States of America in Jamaica and make a mockery of the Monroe Doctrine as they pursue endless war at distant shores.
The Montego Bay perimeter road is funded by the Jamaican taxpayers and as such there is no justifiable reason why this contract should have been awarded to any overseas contractors.
The government has a duty not only to provide physical infrastructure but also to effectively use our taxpayer’s money to build our social capital and to strengthen the capacity of our human resource.
We have developers, engineers, contractors and consultants with more than adequate competencies to develop the Montego Bay Development Road.  Our local professionals have demonstrated the capacity to execute and manage major projects as exemplified by the work carried out by Jamaican professionals on the Northern Coastal Highway.
Tumblr media
In the recent Andrew Holness cabinet reshuffle the Hon. Homer Davis was appointed to head the Office of the Prime Minister West. This is no accident, but a strategic move to ensure the orderly integration of the Chinese into western Jamaica.
Minister Davis and Former Mayor of the City of Montego Bay enjoys more than cordial relationship with the Montego Bay Chinese community with numerous visits to China during his tenure in office.  With the support of the Chinese Dr. Horace Chang remains the most powerful member of the Holness’ Cabinet.
While Bishop O’Neil Russell, and others may be disappointed in the reappointment of Dr. Horace Chang as Minister of National Security, they missed the bigger picture that Chang has consolidated his power base with the appointment of his Deputy General Secretary and his protégé Homer Davis as head of OPM West and the ostensible Emissary of the Chinese community, the new power base in Montego Bay.
To those who sing praises of Homer’s appointment, are living in a fool’s paradise. It is not about you, it is about the Chinese work permits and citizenship, building approvals, the clearance of their goods at the wharf and importantly their security. Homer Davis as a conduit who will ensure that the JLP is fully funded to win the next elections.
Tumblr media
There will be a seismic shift in business activities back to the old city of Montego Bay. This regeneration started with Harmony Park, the building out of the downtown Montego Bay Waterfront District and soon the regentrification of the urban centre.
Finally, Who gave the Chinese the permit to dump the wetland and mangrove swamp at Reading to construct the multi story, multi family, high end, Chinese enclave. According to the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation the “project will open new areas to the south of Montego Bay for development and expansion, giving access to lands for housing development.”
But will our local developers; Gore, Moe, Azan, WICHON be beneficiaries of the development opportunities.
China's Silk Road to Montego Bay, “Turn Them Back” ! says O Dave Allen (wiredja.com)

MONDO INVITES YOU TO PEEL BACK THE LAYERS OF THE GLASS ONION SOUNDTRACK ON VINYL
Austin, TX – December 12, 2022 – Mondo, in partnership with Netflix and Cut Narrative Records, is incredibly excited to present the vinyl release of Nathan Johnson's brilliant score to the latest Benoit Blanc mystery GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY, debuting on Netflix on December 23.
Audiences who were lucky enough to have seen the film during its special theatrical sneak preview have already discovered that this highly anticipated sequel is nothing short of epic - and much of that is due to the gorgeous, sweeping score by Nathan Johnson. Johnson keeps intact the delicate balance that made KNIVES OUT such a clever score, never undermining the danger that is around every corner, but also brings an intoxicating romanticism to every gorgeous landscape. It’s playful, and sinister all at once.
Tumblr media
"This release stands confidently next to previous Nathan Johnson vinyl soundtracks in our catalog,” says Mo Shafeek. “Housed in an appropriately ‘layered’ package featuring prop replicas and easter eggs, this is an essential collectable for fans of Rian Johnson's on-going mystery series."
The package, carefully constructed by Jay Shaw and Mo Shafeek, pays homage to the film's central mystery in multiple ways. Pressed on 2x 140 Gram Crystal Clear vinyl, and housed in a die-cut jacket, with an acrylic o-card, and multiple inserts, the GLASS ONION soundtrack on vinyl will be available for pre-order at MondoShop.com on December 14 at 12pm CT.
In the follow up to Rian Johnson's smash hit Knives Out, Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects. Returning to the franchise he began, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Rian Johnson writes and directs Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and assembles another all-star cast that includes a returning Daniel Craig alongside Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.
When Rian began writing Knives Out, he asked Nathan to create a unique sonic palette for the world inhabited by debonair detective, Benoit Blanc. Inspired by murder mysteries of a bygone era, Nathan turned to slippery woodwinds, dissonant pianos and eventually the jagged string quartet that would go on to become the film’s audio signature while simultaneously redefining the sound of the modern mystery.

International Women’s Day is March 8
March 8 is International Women’s Day. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women globally. International Women’s Day reminds us to address gender inequalities and advocate for women’s rights.
This year, we highlight the important work of three students from the UMass Boston School for Global Inclusion and Social Development who are working to promote a more inclusive and equitable world for women and people of all genders around the world.
The following blog posts were written by Shymaa Bedaiwy Allam, Odgerel Dashzeveg, Shahrzad Sajadi, and Joy Chrysyl L. Solon.
“A Women, Helping Women Help Women”: Women’s Financial Inclusion in Egypt
By: Shymaa Bedaiwy Allam
Tumblr media
Shymaa speaking at a financial empowerment for women and youth session at the Arab Savings and Financial Literacy Conference in Cairo, October 2023.
I focus my research on the impact of financial inclusion and microfinance on women’s empowerment. Microfinance came into the spotlight worldwide as one of the most debated development tools right after Muhammed Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. Most of the debate around microfinance focuses on the impact of extending these financial services to people who experience poverty and whether microfinance services have helped people out of poverty.
My research highlights the uniqueness of microfinance staffing and the critical role microfinance staff play in extending microfinance services to those who experience poverty. I seek to answer questions like, what is the impact of loan officers on microfinance's mission? With microfinance being first introduced to women, it is meaningful to focus on the role of women loan officers on helping their women clients. Women loan officers also must navigate the assumption that women are better lenders than men. I also address the impact of microfinance regulations on empowering women in Egypt. I aim to map the challenges and opportunities for women within the microfinance market to prevent over-indebtedness and other potential harm to women entrepreneurs.
I was the first woman microfinance regulator in Egypt. I have previously worked as the financial inclusion programme manager with UN Women, and as a policy development specialist at a US Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded activity on Micro-Enterprise Finance (EMF). I have also coordinated many of Sanabel’s regional projects (the Microfinance Network for Arab countries). I am now pursuing Doctorate studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston in the field of Global Inclusion and Social Development.
I hope to continue working as an expert in poverty alleviation issues for women. I want to continue analyzing the impact of economic policies on the welfare of women. I wish to do this as a university staff member, so that I also have the opportunity to teach the next generation. In my words, I am “a woman, helping women help women.”

Celebration of International Women’s Day in Mongolia
By: Oge Dashzeveg
Tumblr media

Mongolia is one of the many countries that celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 as an official public holiday. This tradition dates back to the socialist era when women's suffrage as working mothers was celebrated and rewarded. Socialism promoted working mothers through education, work, and care. In return, women were committed to contributing to the communist production of the economy equally to men and the reproduction of the workforce within their full ability as mothers. This holiday is celebrated as Mother's Day in both public and private spheres.
In post-socialist Mongolia, this public holiday still holds the legacy of Mother's Day but is celebrated more as a Women's Day. Since transitioning from a planned economy communist system to a democratized market capitalism, the contact between the state and women has changed. The state still provides limited care for women, but education and work shifted to the invisible hands of market regulation. The state continues to celebrate women's motherhood by holding mass public events and awarding women who have given birth to four or more children.
On the flip side, women are fighting for their de-facto rights, urging the state to understand the reality women have been dealing with since the transition. The unintended consequences of failing economies have trapped many women in extended unemployment, underemployment, and poverty. This exacerbates their socioeconomic vulnerability, making them more susceptible to social and domestic abuse and discrimination.
Today, the younger generation of women is becoming the voice for all, advocating for generational gender equality in politics, inclusive access to economic opportunities, reducing the motherhood penalty, and promoting welfare mothers' transition to decent and flexible work.

Memoir Writing Workshops with Syrian Refugee Women and Girls
By: Shahrzad Sajadi
Tumblr media
Laundry on lines outside the informal settlement camps in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, Photo credit: Naoki Tokyo.
After conducting a series of workshops with Syrian refugee youth and needs assessment studies with other experts in the field around the rise in the rates of child marriages in the region, my colleague Dr. Valerie Karr and I ran a series of empathy-focused memoir writing workshops with seven Syrian refugee women and girls in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. The stories that emerged from these workshops tell the tale of loss and pain as well as empowerment and tremendous strength. These workshops were facilitated by our local partner, Nahida Nusair who met with the women on a weekly basis and kept in contact with them even after the workshops were over.
Here is an excerpt from one of the stories of the young women:
I am one of the women who decided their fate with their own hands. I decided to be one of the married young girls. I thought marriage was a white dress, pretty jewelry, a big party, dancing, and singing. And I thought that every day would be better than the one before. And I used to think that my husband would love me so much and would take care of me and give me everything I asked for, whatever I wanted would be ready in front of me and that he would take me every day to a place, and we would be very happy. Do you think this is what marriage is? I did."

The Impact of Typhoon Yolanda and Climate Change on Women in Philippines
By: Joy Chrysyl Llido Solon
Tumblr media
Joy Solon with a view of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in the background.
The changing climate has caused an increase in extreme natural disasters. Typhoon Yolanda, one of the most destructive typhoons ever, made landfall through central and southern Philippines on November 8, 2013. Over 150,000 families were evacuated, and 6,300 lives were lost[1]. As a PhD student in the School of Global Inclusion and Social Development, my primary research project centers on the climate justice movement for the loss of life and damages caused by Typhoon Yolanda.
Climate change has a disproportionate impact on vulnerable communities of the global majority. In the aftermath of natural disasters, women and young girls living in poverty become vulnerable and are placed in harmful situations, including early marriage, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation[2]. Women are harshly affected by climate change and natural disasters because of the inequities brought forth by gendered social roles, cultural norms, social marginalization, discrimination, and poverty[3],[4]. Additionally, the masculinity of climate change discourse results in masculinist ideologies, policies, and solutions. This leaves the vulnerabilities of women behind and out of the decision-making process3,[5]. Therefore, the climate justice social movement must establish a women’s rights framework and include a focus on gender inequalities.
I hope to include women-led grassroots networks, climate justice activists, and members and leaders of the community affected by the typhoon as participants in my research. I intend to offer a feminist critique of climate justice that will promote authentic advocacy of women and girls.

Champion for Small Biz Appointed: Shirley Cooper OBE
Tumblr media
In a significant move to bolster the interests of small businesses within the governmental framework, Shirley Cooper OBE has assumed the role of Crown Representative for small businesses. This appointment heralds a new era of advocacy and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK, especially in navigating the opportunities presented by the newly implemented Procurement Act.
A New Advocate for SMEs
Pioneering Change and Opportunity Shirley Cooper, with her rich background in procurement and supply chain management, met with Parliamentary Secretary Alex Burghart to outline the roadmap for her tenure. Their discussions revolved around ensuring that the Procurement Act, coming into effect in October, fully benefits startups and small businesses through simplified processes and improved access to government contracts.   Building on a Legacy Cooper aims to continue the groundbreaking work of her predecessor, Martin Traynor OBE, particularly in leveraging the reforms introduced by the Procurement Act 2023. Her mission is to ensure that SMEs not only have enhanced opportunities to work with the government but also contribute to achieving the best value in public procurement.
Strengthening Government-SME Relationships
Record SME Engagement Under Cooper's leadership, the government seeks to increase its engagement with SMEs, building on the record £21.0 billion worth of work awarded to them in 2021/2022. With the government's annual procurement spend at around £300 billion, there is substantial scope for SMEs to gain from this vast market.   Advocacy and Promotion Cooper's role transcends the operational aspects of procurement; she will be a vocal advocate for small businesses, promoting their agenda within and outside the government. Her extensive experience in both the private and public sectors positions her well to bridge the gap between government procurement practices and the needs of SMEs.
A Critical Juncture for Small Businesses
Leveraging the Procurement Act The Procurement Act's reforms, poised to dismantle barriers for small businesses vying for government contracts, come at a critical time. Cooper's appointment is timely, ensuring that SMEs are well-equipped to navigate the new procurement landscape and capitalize on the opportunities it presents.   A Diverse Background of Leadership Shirley Cooper's career spans significant achievements and leadership roles across sectors, including co-founding the award-winning start-up law firm Tapestry and serving as a global procurement director. Her commitment to economic development and social impact, coupled with her accolades for services to women’s empowerment and equality, underscores her dedication to fostering inclusive growth.
Looking Ahead
A Strategic Vision for SME Empowerment As Cooper embarks on her journey as Crown Representative, her strategic vision for SME empowerment is clear. Working closely with the Cabinet Office’s Small Business Advisory Panel, departments, suppliers, and trade bodies, she aims to level the playing field for small businesses, startups, and social enterprises. Her role is pivotal in ensuring these entities can compete for and win more government contracts, marking a significant step forward in the UK's commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive economy.
Conclusion
Shirley Cooper OBE's appointment as the Crown Representative for small businesses opens up new avenues for SMEs to thrive in the UK's governmental procurement ecosystem. With a focus on maximizing the benefits of the Procurement Act, Cooper is set to champion the cause of small businesses, ensuring they have a strong voice and fair opportunities in competing for government contracts.   Sources: THX News & Cabinet Office. BALIPORTALNEWS.COM, JAKARTA - Direktur Utama PT PLN (Persero), Darmawan Prasodjo kembali dinobatkan sebagai CEO of The Year dalam dua tahun berturut-turut. PLN juga mendapat penghargaan Best ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Campaign in Energy Sector. PLN melakukan penataan di seluruh proses bisnis menjadi streamline, mengubah kultur organisasi dari bureaucratic like menjadi business like. Dimana sebelumnya pegawai PLN memiliki pengetahuan dan kapasitas mengenai pembangkit listrik berbasis fosil, kini dikembangkan sehingga menguasai kompetensi pembangkit EBT,” jelas Darmawan. Dirinya menegaskan transisi energi ini dilakukan bukan hanya karena adanya perjanjian internasional, tetapi juga untuk memastikan generasi mendatang harus mendapatkan kehidupan yang lebih baik daripada generasi saat ini. “Dulu PLN hanya bertugas menyediakan listrik, tetapi kini tugas PLN juga untuk mendinginkan bumi dan menjaga lingkungan,” tutup Darmawan.(bpn) Read the full article

Gum-Free Streets Initiative: Cleaning Up and Transforming Our Communities
Tumblr media
More than 50 councils across the UK are to receive grants totalling more than £1.2 million to remove discarded chewing gum from our streets and prevent it from being littered again. Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cardiff, Glasgow, Ipswich, Liverpool, Sunderland and Wiltshire are among those to benefit from the second round of funding from the Chewing Gum Task Force. Launched in 2021, the Task Force was established by Defra and is administered by charity Keep Britain Tidy, with funding provided by gum producers. It aims to clean gum off pavements and put in measures to stop it being dropped in the first place, helping clamp down on anti-social littering. Estimates suggest the annual clean-up cost of chewing gum for councils in the UK is around £7 million and, according to Keep Britain Tidy, around 77% of England’s streets and 99% of retail sites are stained with gum. The Chewing Gum Task Force brings together some of the country’s major chewing gum producers, including Mars Wrigley and Perfetti Van Melle. Together, the producers have pledged up to £10 million over five years via the scheme to tackle gum littering. The latest round of funding includes: - Grants of up to £25,000 for cleansing with a fully funded bespoke gum litter prevention package. - Further grants of up to £25,000 for Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cardiff, Doncaster and Glasgow for the fully funded bespoke gum litter prevention package and long-term monitoring and evaluation carried out by not-for-profit social enterprise Behaviour Change.
Tumblr media
Official portrait of Rebecca Pow MP. Photo by Richard Townshend. Wikimedia.   Environment Minister Rebecca Pow said: Littering blights our communities, spoils our countryside, harms our wildlife and wastes taxpayers’ money when cleaning it up. That’s why we’re working with gum producers to tackle chewing gum stains. After the success of the first round of funding, this next slice will give councils further support to clean up our towns and cities. In its first year the task force awarded 44 grants worth a total of £1.2 million, benefitting 53 councils who were able to clean an estimated 2.5km2 of pavement, an area larger than 467 football pitches. By combining targeted street cleaning with specially designed signage to encourage people to bin their gum, participating councils achieved reductions in gum littering of up to 80% in the first two months. Monitoring and evaluation carried out by Behaviour Change has shown that a reduced rate of gum littering is still being observed six months after clean-up and the installation of prevention materials.   Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive, said: "Chewing gum litter is highly visible on our high streets and is both difficult and expensive to clean up, so the support for councils provided by the Chewing Gum Task Force and the gum manufacturers is very welcome." "However, once the gum has been cleaned up, it is vital to remind the public that when it comes to litter, whether it’s gum or anything else, there is only one place it should be – in the bin – and that is why the behaviour change element of the task force’s work is so important."   Naomi Jones, corporate affairs director at Mars Wrigley UK, said: "We’re pleased to be supporting the work of the Chewing Gum Task Force again this year." "While the majority of consumers already bin their used gum properly, we know there’s still work to be done to change the behaviour of people who are disposing of their gum irresponsibly." "In its first year, the Task Force’s work saw 2.5km2 cleaned in council areas around the country. Behaviour change interventions achieved chewing gum litter reductions of up to 80%. This year, we’ll be to be funding and partnering with another 56 councils, across the four nations, in 2023."   In 2022, individual councils received grants of up to £20,000 to fund street cleaning and the purchase of cleansing equipment. Larger grants of up to £70,000 were available to two or more councils working together to achieve a greater impact.
North East Solution
In Grimsby, machines made by Eco Removal Systems were used to clean unsightly chewing gum stains in the town centre. Due to the crew wearing the machines as backpacks, the team quickly became known as ‘Gum Busters’. The stains were removed using an eco-friendly detergent made from sugar beet. This was heated and sprayed directly on to the gum to vaporise it.
Better Signage for Cities
Four councils – Birmingham, Newport, Glasgow and Belfast – benefitted from a full independent evaluation of their clean-up and prevention signage. A reduction of up to 80% in gum littering after two months was measured as a result of the interventions, through a combination of pre- and post-intervention gum counts and footfall analysis. The task force was announced as part of the government’s strategy to support the evolution and regeneration of high streets across the country, which includes 15 Town Deals totalling £335 million to fund community regeneration projects, the transformation of derelict buildings and communities being given the chance to own local pubs, theatres, sports grounds and corner shops.
Increasing Fines
Littering is a criminal offence. In the Prime Minister’s Anti-social Behaviour Action Plan, we have committed to raising the upper limit on spot fines later this year from £150 to £500 in England. To tackle littering of drinks containers, from 2025 we will introduce a deposit return scheme for drinks containers where people will be incentivised to recycle their bottles and cans by placing a small deposit on drinks products. We have also banned some of the most littered plastic items in England and plan to introduce further bans from October 2023. The opening of this next round of funding comes alongside further steps this week to deliver the Prime Minister’s Anti-Social Behaviour Action Plan. The plan sets out the government’s approach to making sure these issues are treated with the urgency they deserve by establishing a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of anti-social behaviour.
More Power to Police and Local Authorities
It also gives the police and local authorities the tools they need to tackle the problem. Coinciding with Resolve’s ASB Awareness Week, pilot schemes have begun in police force areas to increase police patrols in hotspot areas, helping deter crimes from happening in the first place, and to deliver ‘immediate justice’ whereby offenders will be made to repair the damage they’ve caused to their communities with an aim to start reparative work within 48 hours. Earlier this week, the government also opened the first round of the Million Hours Fund, to make an initial £3 million of grants available for youth organisations to provide more out-of-school activities and support more young people in areas of high need this summer – ensuring young people are helped away from bad life choices and are given access to greater support.   Sources: THX News, Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs & Rebecca Pow MP.  Read the full article

I look forward to the rest of 2022 and all of 2023 with continued hope and optimism as I can’t wait to encounter and share new opportunities - both professionally and personally. I wish everyone the infinite power of your own ‘newer and richer experiences”, as you enter a new year, where the purpose of your ‘life is to live it’.
Go gently my friends. Know you are enough. And always remember to be kind.
