What is an A&R person?

Columbia Records has named Nicole Kim vice president of A&R.  She was previously head of A&R for BigHit Music/HYBE and head of creative for superstar K-pop group BTS. She worked across their collaborations with the likes of Coldplay, Halsey, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion and others. She will be based out of the company’s Los Angeles office.

Prior to joining Big Hit Music/HYBE in 2017, she held creative positions at Starship Entertainment and Sony Music Publishing Korea.

She supposedly resigned back in December but has been seen with Bang PD as recently as when Jungkook was in California in the recording studio and then attending Coachella. I would like to think she submitted her resignation but stayed on until this month for a transition period since this whole BTS solo era has been chaotic.

I KNOW NOTHING AND HAVE ZERO INTENTION OF PLACING BLAME OF ANYTHING ON ANYONE. I am merely stating what little I know and my thoughts and opinions of this particular news.

But for all we know, they did not part on good terms. Who knows. I mean I hope so but unless we read specifically, I guess we can’t really know. I’m kind of ignorant when it comes to what the duties are for an A&R person. We have always just vaguely referred to them as the managers and personally, I have always thought of them as assistants which I suppose they are.

Basically they oversee the artistic development of music artists. A&R departments can be a team of people. We don't know how many are involved specifically with BTS.

According to what has been written, if she was head of A&R for BigHit/HYBE, Nicole had a very important and high-ranking position and therefore a lot of influence where BTS was concerned. So I’m imagining the next one to step in her shoes will have an equally high-ranking position and influence with the group and individual members.

If the manager that has accompanied them overseas is one of the A&R people, right away the big difference we see is he is by the members’ sides as they walk through the airport whereas before we never really saw any female staff accompany them through the airports.

Just playing devils advocate here... we talk about how the solo era has rolled out and many of us think it has NOT been handled in the best way. Well, Nicole would have been the one managing that process and that is why I am wondering if her parting ways was amicable. I am wondering if new manager dude has something to do with how this Tae and Jennie reveal has happened.

Everything I just said was my thinking out loud and just wondering about how everything went down and how everything is being handled now I don’t know anything as a fact.

Rain-JYP, Win the Appeal in the “World Tour” Lawsuit

Singer Rain and Rain's former agency, JYP Entertainment, won a lawsuit claiming compensation for damages related to a performance in North America.

On the 9th, the Seoul High Court judged, "Wellmade StarM is the one responsible for the cancellation of the concert in North America," and "JYP Entertainment and Rain do not have to return the 10 billion won paid in advance."

And because of many other things JYP Ent had been having a rough time.

For reference, their sales (at the time were:

2009 sales KRW 10.1 billion (down 7% compared to the previous year) Net profit -4.6 billion

2010 sales 21.6 billion net profit 900 million

2011 sales 9.9 billion net profit -2.1 billion

2012 sales 15 billion net profit -9.8 billion

At that time, Loen invested in JYP, and got JYP’s shares in return.

With the 25.4% of the company’s stock, it immediately became the 2nd largest shareholder.

Back then (around 2013), Loen was owned by SK, but when the laws got revised, Loen was sold to a Hong Kong-based private equity fund.

(Loen was a music distribution company that monopolised the online music distribution market and paid very little to entertainment companies for it, so entertainment companies united and moved their online music rights distribution to KMP Holdings.

Although Loen was the 2nd biggest shareholder in JYP Ent, JYP Ent. also participated into the movement. It was okay when Loen was under SK, because Park Jinyoung is acquainted with the SK Group family, but when it was sold to the Hong Kong-based private equity fund, the confrontation intensified.)

→ Tbh, this is some complicated stuff, so if you’re having a hard time grasping it, might as well skip the part above.

Either way, at the time Loen, which wanted to grow as an entertainment company, opposed JYP Ent’s listing on the stock market and proposed a take over.

GOT7 debuted.

Just debuted, but the company is on the verge of bankruptcy and they were pretty much poised to end up sitting outside in a street (fuck this shit).

At the time when GOT7 (as newcomers) were supposed to get as much push from the company as possible, the company was literally in ruins, and GOT7 got shipped off to Japan within 3 months after their debut. Their first concert was also held in Japan.

Suzy was shooting commercials like crazy. (The vid above is 6 min long, but it’s only the commercials from the first half of the year, you can pretty much tell she filmed every single CF suggestion they received.)

As for 2PM… they just didn’t come back from Japan at all. They were on tour in Japan for 2 years straight (no exaggeration here)

In 2014-2015, they released 2 albums in Korea, while in Japan they had 5 releases during the same period of time.

If it hadn’t been for 2PM, JYP Ent would’ve just evaporated back then. 2PM was the holding pillar that prevented JYP Ent from collapsing.

Park Jinyoung was also trying to do something, so he sold the JYP Ent building that belonged personally to him.

And with that he bought the JYP Ent stocks (currently, Park Jinyoung is the largest shareholder).

FNC Entertainment’s Han Sungho, comparing with the Big 3 entertainment companies… “We’re better off than JYP Ent.”

That was exactly when FNC was indulging in all that media play going “JYP Ent, get out of my way, I’m in the big 3 now.”

In the midst of all this, Yang Hyunsuk sprinkled this kind of crap trying to raise his stock prices. It’s like, the house was already on fire, and he just fried some popcorn next to it, absolutely infuriating.

Either way, spring comes to those who wait.

In 2015, GOT7 received a good response abroad with Just Right.

Originally, although JYP Ent is a big company, it wasn’t that big on the overseas market.

The company was mostly focused on popularity among the general public, but as they grew step by step with GOT7, Twice and Stray Kids, they reached overseas, too.

What’s more, they also began paying more attention to group fandoms starting with Twice.

These days, they’re quite decent with self-created content, and they squeeze out the fandom money through goods, too… They’ve become a fandom-oriented company.

When Twice hit the Korean jackpot with their legendary Ooh-Aah-Cheer-Up-TT line, and then did insanely well in Japan, the hardships era came to an end.

Is My House: the legendary male-idol case of climbing back the charts.

Originally back then, they were supposed to have promos for a month. After a relatively long promo, they were planning to go back to Japan, but an MV director called Han Samin flaked on them with the intention to film a Big Bang MV.

Naive Production went “oh poor you” and shot the MV in a hurry.

Eventually, My House had just one week of promos, but it climbed back the charts way later, so there’s a happy ending in that.

That was when the JYP Ent ❤ Naive relationship started.

Right now the fandom attitude [to Naive] is not good, and they’ve also had quite a few mishaps over time, so they don’t have such an all encompassing reach as before but they’re still filming MVs on the Japanese side (mostly for NiziU).

Now I’m really done talking about the times when the world was chewing on JYP Ent.

You might say, isn’t this an omniscient JYP Ent stan perspective?

He is not gonna go all the way to Japan to visit Sony HQ there… He will go to New York for that as its closer and its what he has always done and likely what he did last month. Yall need to stop making up these excuses that he went to Japan solely for work bc he didnt, yes he can write music there but just idk accept he planned the trip around her work to be seen with her too bc she likely is filming that movie in Korea nearby bc theres no other reason for her to be there otherwise when they have been apart for a month and they have travelled by themselves to other places. "Oh hell no." Roxie pipes up despite everyone else cheering. "There is only ONE guy you been having around lately....And I know who it is...but they dont know. Furball, you cant be fucking serious." Renelle turns to face her. "What are you talking about? I thought she was out on tour for the past few months." Renelle asks with a scowl on her face.

"She was but she was kidnapped by the biggest crime lord there...Think back to where she was.." Roxie continues, slowly walking to Rockelle with the biggest shit eating grin on her face. "Go on...Use your minds for something that isnt being stupid." She teases then Chris raises a brow.

"You mean she went on tour in Gotham. So shes dating Bruce Wayne. Hes not bad-" Chris starts then Rockelle let out a sigh.

"Since Roxie ruined the surprise, no it isnt Bruce. Its Joker."

"You cant be serious!"

"Damn you like dick attatched to toxic dont you?"

"You date a man whose a clown willingly?! Are you crazy?!"

"Ellie I support your decisions but this is a bit much!"

Roxie was cackling on the floor and Rockelle stood face to palm. "Can all of you just let me speak my peace for one second and quit talking over me?!" She yells then everyone quiets down, looking over at her with a raised brow. "Go on, we are waiting." Renelle said, glaring at Rocky.

Rockelle let out a soft sigh and smiles. "As bad as it sounds, he keeps his crime life seperate from the life here. Hes sweet despite his homicidal tendencies. And dad, he doesnt do anything to hurt me or that you would not approve of. Maybe one day you all can meet him, hes really sweet if you look past the paint and smell of gunpowder. NOW you guys are free to ask questions." Rockelle said with a lovedrunken sigh.

Renelle was the first to raise her hand. "Okay yeah um...Why him? You got choices and you pick HIM?! How was he different?!" She asks, genuinely flabbergasted. "Is it the damn books you read? Did it give you a mask kink or something?! Doesnt he smell?!" She continues and Rockelle scoffs. "You dont pick who you fall in love with. Besides, I dont see the crazy homicidal side of him, the side everyone else sees. You would be surprised at how gentle he is with me. I dont even fear him and I dont treat him differently. Hes my big scary teddy bear. I wouldnt have it any other way."

They all looked at each other and let out a sigh. If she was happy thats all that mattered to them, even if her man was a crazed maniac. "One question." Onyx piped up and everyone looks over at her. "Is the paint a indicator of what his face looks like? If so, I feel bad for you." Onyx comments before Rockelle giggles. "Now if I tell you that, he might get mad at me. You all will find out in time....Maybe. Anyway you all have to get out, hes coming within the next hour." Rockelle quickly comments, opening the door for them.

"Well damn, kick us out for some dick, I see how it is!" Renelle pipes up and Chris snickers. "And the amount of times you kicked me out so you and Chris can fuck do you want me to revisit in grave detail?" She retorts, then Renelle turns red as Chris snickers, escorting her out the door. "Dont worry we are leaving. Congrats! Stay safe! Let him know to quit blowing up the bakery too, that happened the 3rd time this month!" Chris comments as they leave, patting Renelle's back, swallowing a laugh. "Will do! Be safe you two, love you!"

Onyx got up next to leave, dragging Roxie by her arm. "Thanks for telling us about who you date. Dick must be good for you to pick him." She gags and Rockelle rolls her eyes. "Says the one who fucked a guy with an alien problem. Get out of my Caucasian household." She retorts, Onyx dragging her little sister out of the house. Death looked over at Rockelle with a raised brow. "While I dont approve of this...I will let you deal with this in your ways. Call me if he gives you any issues." Death chimes in as he leaves. Rockelle nods and smiles, waving at everyone before shutting the door and pressing her back to it.

"Why does everyone think his dick is whats keeping me around? We havent even had sex yet!" She mumbles to herself.

"Darling?" Rockelle chirps, gently holding the Jokers face.

"Hm?"

"Could you do me a favor and leave a bakery alone during your robberies?" She sits up and kisses his forehead, which makes him raise a brow. "Explosives have no direction doll." He responds, gently pulling her closer.

"Thats a shame...My friends bakery keeps getting blown up...I was hoping you could do something about it." She whispers in his ear, gently rubbing her thumb along his scar. A soft growl left his lips as he feels it. "I will think about it." He responds, leaving a kiss on neck before Rockelle squeals.

"Thank you baby!" She kisses his face and giggles, looking at him. "Yeah yeah. Ya know, you have me wrapped around your finger. Dont get used to it." He responds, then she scrunches her nose, tilting her head. "And why is that a bad thing?" She playfully narrows her eyes at him.

"You might get too used to it. Softness isnt exactly in my vocabulary." He responds and she shakes her head, leaning closer to him. "Of course I will. I give you a reason to be soft, who has to know you are a big ol' teddy bear? I will keep it a secret." She teases, kissing his cheek and scar again. "Besides, I told my family about you today. They would love to meet you." She continues.

He hums in response, turning his lip up. "We will see." He said, Rockelle pouting at his indifference. He doesnt look at her because he knows he will immediately say yes if he does. "Please baby?" Dammit that whining voice she does. Stay strong! "Fine. But the paint stays." He responds making Rocky cheer. "Yay! Thank you baby!"

Although he has departed ways with Starship Entertainment, it seems the group’s maknae I.M remains fond of this imagery. In Overdrive, his second EP–the first with his new company Sony Music Korea–he continues to drive these symbols home.

Perhaps it is because he hasn’t left the group, and is instead exploring his own music alongside it, that he is comfortable to continue to explore one of the central motifs of his band’s previous releases.

Hello from Korean anon. Just read the original post in Korean and let me clarify on what he had for dinner last night. Normally, Koreans use anchovy broth for soybean paste stew, and sometimes meat broth is used as a base. So you can't be certain that what he had last night was complete vegan unless the restaurant specifically identified itself as a vegan restaurant. Also worth noting that the restaurant he went to mainly sells grilled pork belly. Also a famous place in Seoul, not far from Sony Music Korea.
