A post I've been meaning to make but keep forgetting to is the fact that the way steadyhands can actually win is they need the three of them to balance eachother out.

Between them, we usually have only two of them freaking out at a time (unless I'm missing something) for example, s1e4. Stede and Izzy are both freaked abt the approaching Spanish navy, Ed is calm (even tho he kinda does rile them up a bit but I think he thinks he's playing, like with fang and the knife parade)

When stede is knocked off balance by killing Ned Low, izzy advises Ed to give him a minute. Ed doesn't really take that advice and goes forward anyway, which we see Ed later considers a mistake.

Again, we see Izzy take the role of mediator when Ed decides to leave, he goes to comfort Stede and suggests he gets back to the ship before he ends up on the wrong side of a sword (he knows stede is fucked up abt Ed and wants to get him somewhere safe before he takes those negative feelings out on someone else)

When Ed is still trying to claw his way out of the gravy basket and izzy is lost in his grief and booze, Stede comes to him to ask his opinion of Ed, knowing he cares deeply for him and hoping he will want him to stay, but he also expresses concern with izzys drinking and even scolds the unicorn when Izzy starts yelling at it in solidarity without a hint of sarcasm to it.

I don't think it's healthy in the long run, but I do think that until they get to a point where they are communicating properly and learning to manage their own mental health, it helps when one of them is the fulcrum while the others try to balance. Izzy is obviously trying to show his support for Ed and Stede in the only way he knows how, training him and giving him positive reinforcement when he does well at the things he's trying to do well. He talks to Ed abt his feelings after he tosses his leathers overboard and encourages him to do the thing he think might make him happy. And even tho this leads to Ed breaking things off with stede for the time being, that's not izzys fault that that's the direction he takes this. Remember, both Ed and Izzy recently attempted to take their own lives so I'm not gonna expect either of them to be in the right headspace.

I would like to see the inverse. One is upset with the other two trying to stabilize, but that's a ways out bc rn they're all upset all the time. Maybe one day they can all be happy and getting along at the same time. I dunno.

Me, rocking backwards and forwards talking to my cat in a deranged way: ed has made Izzy an extension of himself this season and while Izzy has battled against that in the face of Stede he goes back to taking responsibility for Ed's actions. They go back to being one in the same. Because they see themselves thus in each other, perhaps they see themselves as the worst parts of each other, Stede choosing to love and accept both of them would be so meaningful. This is how steddyhands can still win.

I know people are upset about Izzy being killed (I am too) but the truth is I don’t think it was bad writing or even them diminishing Izzy’s character, I actually think everything about the last episode has to do with production and I think Izzy lovers will feel a little better about it if they see it like that (it helped for me).

Basically, if you look at it like this, I think 2 important things came into play. Budget and how the showrunners assumed this would play out. Which is to say that they probably assume HBO will either renew them for season 3 and cut their budget again or they’re going to be cancelled.

Both are very likely, so assuming they had this in mind, removing Con, who I’d guess is the 3rd highest paycheck after Taika and Rhys was probably their best budgeting move, especially if they’re thinking of having an all out war in the final season that they probably want to be a visual spectacle, so each season feels like it’s getting consistently larger in scope.

On the other hand, if they do get cancelled (which they probably will because the HBO CEO is a weird little conservative goon), they left the ending in a way that could be considered an ENDING while still being prepped for a 3rd season. So in the time they had left (which was 2 episodes less than their first season) they gave Izzy an entire completed character arc.

I 100% understand the sadness and anger, especially after all the shit he went through during the beginning of the season, I felt gut punched when I learned he died and was bitter as hell through my whole first viewing of the season even though I’d had more than a month to process it. But after having thought it through, I genuinely don’t think it’s simply them treating Izzy as just an extension of Ed’s character growth and I sure as shit don’t think it’s because they wanted to conform to Izzy haters.

I think if they had all of the resources and episodes they wanted, had a guaranteed season 3, I think we would have gotten the character growth we got with better pacing and he probably would have at minimum made it to season 3 (I also think he would have had a love interest, but that’s just what I wanted for him tbh).

I think they did the best they could with what they had, allocated a lot of budget and screen time towards his character despite having less of those 2 things than the first season, and at least let Izzy have a completed story and arc, even if the ending was deeply disappointing.

I've seen people saying that the SteadyHands dynamic is feral Ed, feral Izzy and calm Stede, which is fun and all but it just misses something...

I really enjoy the concept of edizzy having a 24/7 D/s relationship, that of course they never talked about and maybe Ed never really understood what it was, hell maybe even Izzy didn't consciouslly know that it was the role he had placed himself in, and of course it all goes to shit - because how do you provide care for a person that you own, when you don't fully understand just how much you own them. How do you rely on a man to be a master to you, when he doesn't know that's the role you've assigned him.

Then maybe, down the line post S2 (were pretending like half of S2 didn't happen, I'm picking and choosing from what I liked lol), they finally do talk about It™. And of course, Stede plays a part in helping them create a healthy (or at least healthier) version of that dynamic, but it's not just Stede. I want it to also just be Edward and Izzy having grown as people. Edward having realized he had become his father and then working to getting better, developing more self control and allowing himself to experience the desire to control in a health(ier) and controlled fashion, where he can prove to himself (and Izzy) that he's capable of compassion along side cruelity and admitting to himself that he's allowed to have that duality and that it doesn't make him evil. Izzy realizing he has to communicate and ask for things he wants, the he has to endure the mortifying ordeal of being known. Izzy accepting that he can be owned but still own himself just as well, that he can demand respect from his captain while still being loyal to and dedicating himself to his captain.
