Our Dear Friend Jonathan - an Academic Analysis of Dracula Daily
I’ve had a little interest, so I'm posting the short project I did on DD for my Digital Humanities class at uni way back in June! A few caveats - this is technically an 'analysis of a digital artifact' and not an essay, so it's not hugely in depth, plus I was only given 1000 words (which i exceeded by quite a bit, whoops) so I didn't get to included nearly as much as I wanted to. Also tumblr only let me include 10 images, so I've cut out a few of the memes I'd used (it also erased my links but I have them all saved so I'll add them in list form if anyone wants me too). Finally, I've contacted all the artists included and obtained permission to post their (credited!) work! Enjoy!
Our Dear Friend Jonathan
Substack, Tumblr, and the Digital Intimacy of the World’s Biggest Book Club
By Rebecca F
Tumblr media
Dracula Daily, created in 2021 by Matt Kirkland, is an astonishingly simple concept on the surface. Utilising the email subscription service Substack, Kirkland divides Bram Stoker’s 1847 epistolary novel into emails that are sent on the real-world date that corresponds with the in-fiction date of the events. Protagonist Jonathan Harker starts a travel diary detailing his trip to Transylvania on the 3rd of May, and the rest of the novel continues in journal entries, letters, newspaper clippings, and even a diary kept on phonograph, all dated, up until the final entry in November. Some entries are pages long, some only a few paragraphs, many days (almost two weeks in June) don’t have an entry at all. Every entry, however short, is emailed on the correct date, and unless the reader wants to go out and buy a copy of the book to ‘cheat’ and read ahead, that’s all they get. Interestingly, the book itself doesn’t present all of these entries chronologically – dates tend to skip back and forth. Reading via subscription, then, changes the fundamental experience of reading Dracula in more ways than one. In 2021 the mailing list slowly spread by word of mouth, and Kirkland ended up with 1600 subscribers. In 2022, after the idea went viral on popular internet social media sites Twitter and Tumblr, Dracula Daily has 200,000 subscribers – and climbing (Martinelli).

How does reading Dracula via email change the experience of reading Dracula? For this analysis I’ll be dividing this question into two parts – firstly, the actual physical, practical and individual act of reading the novel via email and the way that effects the intended experience, and secondly, the wider, communal ‘book club’ aspect, which is the real reason Dracula Daily has gone so viral and become such an important moment in what I have coined digital intimacy.

Playing With Time
Tumblr media
Dracula by Bram Stoker is a famously claustrophobic novel. The opening chapters with Jonathan Harker travelling to Count Dracula’s castle only to be held captive there lean on the sense of being trapped and confined with a monster – but these chapters are over in fifty or so pages, freeing the reader quite quickly and bringing a sense of relief before the slower build up to the main climax. Reading the book chronologically, however, changes all that. Having to wait for daily updates really intensifies the sense of time – we can feel how long Jonathan is trapped with the Count, and we can slowly see his mental state deteriorate. Occasionally, unlike in the novel as published, we escape the castle entirely, leaving him there alone, to read letters from his fiancée Mina, her friend Lucy Westenra and Lucy’s three suitors. These are amusing and engaging asides that nonetheless leave us screaming for the focus to return to our trapped protagonist. This builds a sense of intimacy, we’re now directly invested in Jonathan and every entry from him feels like a letter written personally to us. As Tumblr user @atundratoadstool puts it, “We all will–in fact–be skipping ahead some chapters in a few days to meet another narrator only to skip immediately back to catch up with our collective friend Jonathan Harker… You can’t have your dread or anticipation undercut by future events. Like all the characters you’re going to meet, you just have to wait for Dracula to act upon you,” (emphasis mine) (@atundratoadstool). Another user, @soup-is-here, describes it thus, “I think at this point the dread of Jonathan's isolation is so much worse than the idea of him actually being bitten, especially in this email format. It really demonstrates just how long the Count kept him there in a way sitting and reading the book wouldn't,” (@soup-is-here). So, we realise that the act of digitising this novel changes the nature of the novel.
In their essay “Universal Design and its Discontents,” Richard H Godden and Jonathan Hsy discuss the pervasive nostalgia that sometime overtakes discussions about digital culture, quoting Adam Kirsch who asks, “Is it actually true that reading online is an adequate substitute for reading on paper? If not, perhaps we should not be concentrating on digitizing our books but on preserving and circulating them more effectively,” (Godden and Hsy). One can’t help but wonder what traditionalists like this must think of a project like Dracula Daily, which seems to embody everything they despise about the digital humanities – and one could also feel a level of frustration that they would miss or dismiss the excitement that these readers are experience in discovering a new way of reading and meaningfully engaging with an old text.

Digital Intimacy
Dracula Daily, as a movement rather than the literal subscription, really came to life on Tumblr. A quick browse through the Dracula Daily tag will show up thousands of posts, a combination of art, memes, discussion and – perhaps surprisingly – serious and thoughtful analysis, all with anywhere from dozens to thousands of interactions. At one point, Dracula Daily trended on Tumblr above popular Marvel Cinematic Universe release, the Eurovision song contest and hotly anticipated Dr Who casting news (Kuppermann).
Tumblr media
Marketed as a youth pop culture microblogging site and having somewhat of a reputation for frivolity, one could be excused for being baffled that a 125-year-old piece of classical literature has gathered such a huge and devoted following. But it seems that the digital intimacy the subscription forges between the readers of Dracula and its characters also translates to the readers of Dracula and each other. In short, the act of reading the novel all together, one tantalising piece at a time, has created an exclusive 200,000-member strong book club, and in order to be part of it – to enjoy the in-jokes, to get the memes, to contribute to the meta – one has to keep up with the story.
Tumblr media
Every day when the email arrives – the same time for everyone across the world – the Dracula Daily tag becomes flooded with people sharing their thoughts on the latest entry, replying to and reposting each other’s posts, adding to the discussion, arguing, analysing, and joking. This demonstrates a remarkable collective level of reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, as readers mine every sentence of the daily entry for material. There are blogs now to keep track of the different posts, one, who responded to my request for help in putting this project, has entries archived meticulously with tags like “memes,” “reference,” “serialisation,” and “analysis” (@draculadailytracker). And while the Tumblr denizens do tend to run with jokes like Jonathan Harker’s preoccupation with paprika, there is a surprising amount of intelligent literary discourse. An example of this is that when Jonathan writes an entry about the "g*psies" who show up at the castle, a number of posts sprang up acknowledging and discussing the racism, Orientalism, imperialism and anti-Romani sentiments that are embedded through the novel. There have also been mature discussions about the sexual politics of the book, as well as the homoeroticism and queer themes. The literary establishment has tended throughout the years to be overwhelmingly white and male, this is an excellent demonstration of the ways the digital humanities can work towards democratising and opening up these discussions.
Tumblr media
In her essay “Whither the DH?” Lee Skallerup Bessette talks about the way Digital Humanities – in an academic sense – can help foster communities amongst disparate groups of people, she even likens it to the practice of letter writing between artists and intellectuals in years past (Bessette). This Tumblr phenomenon is an unusual demonstration of this, and all the more fascinating because it is entirely organic and without an official organising body. The only thing that holds Dracula Daily together is the daily email. There isn’t a real club, there aren’t prompts, there’s no incentive to join in. The material itself isn’t even new – it is merely presented in a new way. “When asked, Kirkland can only guess why people have been fascinated by the project,” writes Jacob Kupperman. “He proposes that the “gap between ‘vampire cliche’ and ‘actual Dracula’” driven by Dracula’s long cultural legacy may play a role, as well as the communal nature of reading the text via newsletter,” (Kuppermann). Or as a tumblr reader says, “not only is it free and making the novel available to just anyone who has an email, which is by far the most integral and necessary aspect of subscribing or interacting with anything these days in a formal way, but it's introducing this story in an ingenious, new format that gets the readers to interact with it not as a novel but as if, our dear Jonathan Harker, is emailing us personally,” (xmichaelmyers).
Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether Dracula Daily will survive the June posting drought, or make it to the end of its run with anywhere near the same amount of hype and engagement it received in its first month. But this phenomenon is a remarkable achievement in dh – it’s organic, it’s grass roots, and an excellent example of how literature can be reimagined through technology. As we collectively await updates from our dear friend Jonathan, we’re doing it together, intimately engaged, in the world’s biggest and most active book club.

The Strings that Weave Us (2022, General, 1.9k) by @katie-alden
It was Andromeda who, on hearing that Harry planned to restore the Black family tapestry, insisted that the best tapestry thread could only be found in a tiny little shop in Hogsmeade. The same tiny little shop where Draco worked. Which is how Harry had found himself trying to make an appropriate amount of eye contact – look at his eyes, Harry, not his soft hair and just-right arms and the dimple in his left cheek and – as Draco explained how the thread worked.

Harry's soulmark is his scar, but he doesn't know that. He thinks he has no soulmate. And Draco, who has Harry Potter's scar on the inside of his hip, is not planning on ever telling him. Ever. It would break him in two. But when Hogwarts institutes a Health Ed week where Draco is tasked with the topic of soulmates, he begins to think maybe Harry needs to know.

First Week of Eternity (2022, Explicit, 7.8k) by InnerLilith, @hd-fangfest
Moving in with the colleague you’d like to fuck is a bad idea for anyone. It’s worse when you’re a card-carrying member of the eternal dead. It’s exponentially worse when your already garlic-obsessed colleague-slash-crush-slash-roommate has recently discovered his distant Italian heritage. In which Draco tries desperately to hide that he’s recently become a vampire, and Harry tries desperately to feed him.
Glowing (2022, Teen, 9.7k) by @cavendishbutterfly, @hd-fangfest
Harry's lived alone and vampiric in his cottage for ages, until a long-lived Draco Malfoy suddenly shows up to answer an advertisement Harry had practically forgotten he'd put in the Prophet. Cue soft blood drinking, quiet nights of reading and crocheting, and Harry thinking that maybe--just maybe--he might not be so alone anymore.

If there’s one thing Harry thought he’d never see, it’s Pansy Parkinson standing over him, shaking him awake at three AM. Draco goes back in time to convince himself not to become a Death Eater. Pansy must enlist Harry Potter to go back after him and convince him not to before he fucks up the fabric of time, because he has “emotional sway.” Harry has no idea what she’s talking about.

My contribution to Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week:
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A head-and-shoulders portrait of Tim Stoker from The Magnus Archives, in front of the aromantic flag. Tim is holding a bouquet of flowers and a pile of pink and red colored gift boxes—one of which is shaped like a heart—that he has been given for Valentine’s Day. He is smiling in a way that indicates he is trying to hide his distress. Tim is portrayed as a thickset man with tan skin, brown eyes, and greying brown hair in an undercut. He has gauged ears and his fingernails are painted black. The flowers are blue hydrangeas, to symbolize Tim’s rejection of the romantic attention being pushed on him. End Description.]
Summary: It’s Valentine’s Day. Tim is being swamped with love confessions, cards, flowers, and chocolate, while Jon—at the desk next to him—receives nothing. Neither of them is happy about this state of affairs.

I am soooo interested in knowing what kind of a guy Bram Stoker was. What would be his reaction be to 100,000 people collectively losing their shit over their friend Jonathan Harker for 6 months? 125 years after publication, at that? Would he be happy? Confused? Would he want to be part of it, if he were in our place? Would he be a vampire named Matt e-mailing all of us himself?

Look, today's entry genuinely terrified me. Like for the first time I'm feeling actually nervous. I'm not really feeling particularly jokey and like, of course I'll see the memes and reblog them but like, right now I'm scared. For the first time this horror novel is horrifying me. Jonathan is alone and lonely, they are looking into each other's eyes and lying while both know the other's truth, the Szgany didn't send his letter, either because they're with Dracula, or they didn't understand, or because Drac realised what Jonathan was going to try and snatched it out of force. I can't pick the worse of the three options. Mina doesn't know what the hell's going on, he was unable to send her his letter, everyone else is having a grand old time back in England, he is well and truly alone. God, what is going to happen? Dracula is playing a deliberate game and that's much scarier than the kind of horror that comes from supernatural beings just being themselves

Every time I see someone refer to the Dracula Daily fandom as the Dracula Daily fandom I'm like honey, no. We are not a fandom. We are a bunch of old timers gathering everyday at the inn discussing the letters which that darling old kid Jonathan sends us every day, worrying for his life.

you seem like a connoisseur so i’m gonna ask…. do u have any horror recs for someone who doesn’t do well w like immediate jarring stuff (jump scares, temporarily scary things, etc.) and prefers more psychological stuff that kind of sits with you? if not, any recs at all would be appreciated!! :)
Hehehe thanks for the ask! I really racked my brain for this so here is a nice long list of some of my faves.
Lake Mungo (2008): So I watched this one last week for the first time and I'm still thinking about it AHH It's one that really sticks with you. There's only one (1) jump scare and it's not really a surprise it's a pretty slow buildup to it. One I definitely recommend!
La Llorona (2019): A really interesting take on a classic horror folk tale. It's very slow burn and has no jump scares. Highly recommend. Nothing like the horrible American la llorona film that came out in the same year lol.
My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To (2021): This one is interesting. It's what I would call a quiet horror movie. I enjoyed it and I'm still trying to decide what I think about it.
The Night House (2021): So this one does have some "jump scares" but they are very creative not anything that actually jumps out at you. A really great psychological horror movie I think it's in my top 5.
A Girls Walk Home Alone At Night (2014): I think this is a modern classic. A very slow burn vampire film that subverts the vampire mythos. Not as psyhcological but it's an interesting watch.
The Wolf House (2019): HIGHLY recommend. It's stop-motion animated and uses paper mache. Definitely one with much to dissect and think about. I want to give spoilers about this one so bad IJABDIUB I think you will enjoy it.
Raw (2016): TW for cannibalism and gore. A French coming-of-age horror film. Not much to say about this one without spoiling but it left a deep impression on me.
The Witch (2015): A folk horror set in a 1630s New England Puritan settlement. The title speaks for itself. I find this one particularly intriguing because I'm obsessed with the Puritanical idea of evil and the devil. Another modern classic imo.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017): A psychological thriller. I went into this one blind and was blown away. It's inspired by a the Greek tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis. It's got Nicole Kidman in it ( my fav. white actress lmao).
Any Park-Chan Wook move ever. But one that is not talked about often is Stoker (2013). Also has Nicole Kidman in it hehe and Mia Wasikowska. A psychological thriller and PCW's English-language debut. The cinematography is STUNNING. All his films are such treats for the eyes and the mind. Highly recommend looking into his films.
The Lodge (2019): A really great psychological horror. No jump scares but TW for suic*de. Starts off as paranormal but unravels into something even worse. Made me angry!
Parasite (2019): Another modern classic. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it already. It has one really good scare unexpectedly lol. Bong Joon-ho's films are spectacular. This one will stick with you for a while.
Get Out (2017): A modern classic! Highly highly recommend if you haven't seen it already one of the best psychological horror films of all time.
Okay the next ones are more on the scarier side but I think they are really exceptional I recommend you give them a watch if you're up for it hehe.
His House (2020), Host (2020), Tigers Are Not Afraid (2017), The Blair Witch Project (1999), The Tale of Two Sisters (2003). The Others (2001), Dark Water (2002), Ju-On (2002), The Orphanage (2007)

In the past two weeks I have watched every adaptation of Dracula I could find, twenty in all. (Not 'Dracula movies' in general, just the ones purporting to be adaptations of the book.) And now I’ve finished, just in time for Dracula’s second deathday.
Here is my list:
Nosferatu (1922)
Dracula (1931)
Dracula (Spanish) (1931)
Drakula İstanbul'da (1953)
Dracula (1958)
Dracula (Mystery and Imagination) (1968)
Count Dracula (1970)
Hrabě Drákula (1970)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1974)
Count Dracula (1977)
Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)
Dracula (1979)
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Bara no Konrei ~Mayonaka ni Kawashita Yakusoku~ (2002)
Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary (2002)
Dracula (miniseries) (2002)
Dracula (2006)
Dracula Reborn (2012)
Dracula 3D (2012)
Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing (2021)
My opinions are as follows:
Dracula (1979) was my favorite adaptation when I’d only seen three, and it’s still my favorite now.
Hrabě Drákula is tied for most accurate adaptation with Count Dracula (1977) and the 2002 miniseries, which was somehow very faithful to the book despite being set in modern-day Hungary.
The Spanish version of Dracula (1931), which was filmed on the same sets at the same time as the English version but with different actors, is honestly a better movie than the English version in most respects. The dialogue is less stilted and the ending is less abrupt. If only they’d had Lugosi it would have been perfect.
Dracula Reborn is absolute trash, the only thing that could possibly have bumped Nosferatu the Vampyre up from the bottom of the list. A worthless movie it was actively painful to watch even at double speed.
Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing was a complete surprise, but really good! It’s on youtube and I recommend it. Actually, all but #12 are online on some site or other, which was extremely helpful.
Only two of these movies had Mina and Lucy kiss, and only two implied the Count’s attention towards Jonathan was homoerotic, and this is how I know few of the screenwriters read the book.

Media Favorites of 2023
Tumblr media
Who can't believe that 2023 is nearly over? *raises hand* As the year winds down, this seems like the time to reflect on the things that helped us or brought us joy. The following is a list (not exhaustive) of my favorite apps, books, music, TV, and video games from the last year, including many that I would recommend to others. You can find my list from 2021 here. (I missed compiling this list in 2022, in no small part because I was sampling eastern Germany’s best Christmas Markets all through December.)
Apps
Airalo. My new go-to for international data, but you’ll need an unlocked phone. I was able to save a ton of money by setting up a second e-SIM to access Japanese mobile data networks. (It cost $10 for 10GB of data across 30 days, which was plenty for the week I spent there, and much cheaper compared to my phone plan’s offerings.) I wish I’d heard of this before my trips to England and Europe this year, but I was able to try it out in Japan successfully. I’ll definitely be making use of this app when traveling in the future. The only downside is that I can’t have both e-sims active, so I had to restart my phone in order to check my text messages. Luckily, most communication is done over apps these days instead of SMS, so I wasn’t missing much.
Reverso. This app pulled more than its weight for me while I was traveling abroad this summer. The thing I liked most about it is how it pulls up example sentences so you can help see the context and usage of a given word. It also saves your searches for you, so if you were a more disciplined language student than me, you could write down any new vocabulary in a notebook to study later. Also, it’s free and works fairly well offline, and it’s able to handle multiple languages in the same app.
Vivino. When in France, drink as the French do, I suppose. But when you’re at the supermarket trying to decide between the many, many wines available for less than 10€, this app helps to narrow down the field. Scanning the label gives you the user score for that vintage, plus a personalized rating for how it compares to previous wines you’ve enjoyed. By rating the wines I tried, I was able to get a better sense of my preferred styles and remember which labels to avoid in the future. It was also excellent to have on hand when we went to Bordeaux and sampled various Grand Crus. The app helped me to get a sense for how much those bottles would fetch back home, and whether it was worth it to buy it in France to bring home or to seek it out at my local liquor store.
Books
Dracula by Bram Stoker. The vampire book that started it all (well, not quite), this one really does live up to its reputation as a classic. A few years ago, I read Stoker’s The Jewel of Seven Stars and enjoyed it tremendously (it even served as the inspiration for a Dark Sun one-shot scenario I wrote based around Queen Tara), so I’m not sure what took me so long to get to Dracula. The epistolary style is really well done and should serve as a reference point for any game masters who long to add handouts to their campaigns. It’s inspired me to try running Night’s Black Agents in the new year.
Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. Apparently this book is the first in an urban fantasy series I’ve been sleeping on for some time. The easy comparison is Storm Front, the first book in the Dresden Files, but I have to say that this one comes out on top re: modern wizard investigator stories, mostly because of the protagonist’s sense of humor and the audiobook narrator’s brilliant delivery. I think fans of British TV will find themselves very much at home with this book. I had the happy accident of being in London while reading this, and I had been exploring Covent Garden and the alleys surrounding the Royal Opera House immediately before reading the finale, which helped tremendously when picturing the final scenes.
Slaying the Dragon by Ben Riggs. With the news of the recent Hasbro layoffs affecting the D&D team at Wizards of the Coast, this book feels like required reading to understand some of the boom and bust cycles of D&D (although, sadly, D&D seems to be doing better than ever, and the layoffs appear to be mandated to help cover losses elsewhere in the company). It’s hard to fact-check/cross-reference this book because so much of it is original research and interviews done by the author, but that’s precisely why it’s a must-read for fans of the franchise.
Music
All Quiet on the Western Front (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film). One word: haunting. The main “melody” is extremely simplistic, but it fits the subject matter so well. I also recommend the movie if you play any 20th century-based wargames or read any history. I found it interesting that this was only the first time a German production company adapted it from the book.
Seelie by CLANN. I’m not sure how to categorize this album, except it’s incredibly ambient and dark and pagan (especially Celtic). The tracks all kind of blend together in a good way, making it excellent for writing or focus work.
Gris (Original Game Soundtrack). Another great soundtrack I put on repeat this year, mostly while reading. It’s melancholic, sweeping, hopeful. I’ve never played the video game, but if it’s half as good as the score, it’ll be quite good.
Movies/TV
Barbie. I went for a “Barbenheimer” double-feature this summer, and I did not expect Barbie to hit way harder than Oppenheimer did. Ryan Gosling might have stolen the show, but the story and the feels really made this movie stay with us. Coming from a franchise development/IP approval perspective (and this is where I have to do the disclaimer that my opinions are my own, I’m not speaking on behalf of my employer Asmodee), I’m shocked that Mattel let this get made, but I’m so glad they did.
Blue Eye Samurai. (Netflix) I had little idea this was coming until a few weeks before the release, but this show blew me away and shattered any expectations I had for it. The character development, the animation, the voice acting, the themes… it’s hard to find faults with the show (although, perhaps Mizu’s ending was unexpected). If you enjoy samurai cinema or anime, if you’re at all interested in the history of Japan, or if you’re simply an appreciator of animation, this is a must-watch.
Vienna Blood. (PBS) I like to joke that I have a grandmother’s taste in TV, because BBC/ITV period dramas make up so much of my streaming diet, but this is a mystery/detective show first and foremost. Instead of Sherlock and Watson, you’ve got Detective Rheinhardt and Max Liebermann. Max is a Jew in 1900s Vienna and a student of Freud’s work, with the psychoanalysis lending the show an interesting frame, but I’ve also really appreciated how important his family is to the show. I’ve found it really fascinating how they explore the many peoples of the Austro-Hungarian empire before its collapse, and it’s made me want to run a Cthulhu by Gaslight campaign in Vienna (elements of which I might pull forward into the NBA game).
Video Games
Baldur’s Gate 3. (PC) It shouldn’t come as a surprise that someone whose hobbies center on Dungeons & Dragons and other roleplaying games should thoroughly enjoy this game, but I’m certain that even folks who have never rolled a d20 will be delighted by this CRPG from Larian Studios. The writing and voice performances are phenomenal, and the sheer amount of content (and thus, replayability) is staggering. I’ve logged over 60 hours playing and can easily see myself playing for 60 more. I’ve only just started Act II, so no spoilers, please!
Horizon: Forbidden West. (PS5) I was a bit of a latecomer to this game after it released in 2023, but once I started, I could barely put it down. Amazing characters? Check. Phenomenal gameplay? Check. Open-world exploration that actually evokes the feeling of discovery? Check. My only quibble is that the story isn’t quite as brilliant as the first game, but given that the first game was a masterpiece and easily in my top 5 games of all time, that’s a high bar to clear. I admit I bought a PlayStation 5 just so I could play the Burning Shores expansion when it came out in April, and while personally I had been shipping Aloy with Kotallo, I appreciate the romantic subplot being included.
What were some of your favorites from 2023? Did your list have any of the same titles as mine?

“Can't we get a special?" asked Lord Godalming.
I’m increasingly (but pleasantly) surprised that people told us a few months ago that Arthur would not get any further definition as a character. He absolutely has. He went from “idk who he is but Lucy likes him I guess?” to a rich jock with a heart of gold who is understandably out of touch with how those who are not rich live. And it’s charming because like, he doesn’t look down on the middle or working class, he’s just increasingly mystified by their way of life.

Part of the reason I’m so enamored with Dr. Seward and his arc so far is that it’s thematically very much about the dangers of compromising your morals in favor of what logically seems like “the greater good.”
And I think that’s also part of why it breaks my heart so much to see people refusing to engage with the text in a way that accounts for Stoker’s biases that bleed into Jack’s character. Because when you refuse to do that, you loose the crucial pattern that runs through nearly all of Jack’s genuine missteps so far.
Because I promise you, Seward is not supposed to be a flawless “purely a product of his time” character. He is, however, supposed to be a reasonably smart and compassionate man, and that’s key because it drives home the point that losing yourself on a slippery slope like this can happen to anyone, even good people. We all have to be on our guard when we are tempted to set aside our ethics in favor of a “worthy cause.”

I think it’s important to remember that Van Hellsing does not actually know he is a character in Dracula, nor does he know for a fact that vampires are real. He is a doctor who happens to know a lot about a lot, including mythology and folklore.
So the past few weeks haven’t JUST been “how do I tell them without sounding crazy?” It’s also very much been a journey from “this reminds me of an old story but that’s just a story, right?” to “this is starting to get to be too much to ignore the possibility of vampires no matter how insane that sounds” to “oh my god I think vampires are real and one is attacking Lucy???”

You know, there definitely is an appeal to the idea of being able to identify a criminal before they commit a crime. I mean, that would make life so much more simple, wouldn’t it? It’s no wonder phrenology was popular; it was basically a seemingly scientific way for every educated person to become one of the precogs from The Minority Report.
Of course, much like the logic within the The Minority Report, it’s never that simple. And while it’s extremely easy to look back now and point at the painfully racist backbone of the entire working theory of phrenology, I think it would be more useful to ask ourselves what our modern version is, and whether we are falling into the same trap.
Do you buy into the idea that people of certain genders or sexualities are biologically wired for violence, abuse, or other problematic behavior?
Do you buy into the idea that people with certain mental disorders are biologically wired for violence, abuse, or other problematic behavior?
It may not be bumps on a skull anymore, but we have our own modern flavors just the same. No one is immune to this, we all have to stay critical.
