"I liked Under the Cloak of War but the ending left the most bitter taste in my mouth. I related more to Chapel and M'Benga's antagonism of the Klingon ambassador when it was pictured as everyday people being absolutely sure that a relevant public figure had done something wrong but unable to prove it. Who hasn't experienced it, these days? But all that went away when they turned M'Benga into a secret super assassin with first-hand knowledge whose answer for the problem of the bad guy was, once again, killing."

I need to know more about how Kirk's on again off again relationship with Carol is working. Apparently he's ok with flirting. Does Sam know he's about to be an uncle? Does he approve of Jim not being there for his kid? I need answers!

I’m in a really shitty mood y’all, I know everyone’s reactions to the bacon scene was to pretend it didn’t happen and I’m actually upset about that, I think everyone should’ve been furious about it, there should’ve been huge amounts of outrage about it!! Did the showrunners even apologize for that? Or did everyone just move on??
Like I know everyone’s just quietly accepting it as an alternate universe, but the showrunners are still currently stating this as a direct prequel, so this Spock is supposed to be a direct prequel to Leonard Nimoy’s Spock, and I can’t think of a bigger slap to the face than this, like it’s still shitty as any version of Spock, but to specifically connect it to Nimoy’s Spock is just. evil.
I know you’re all accepting a level of bad from the show and just shrugging it off, but I don’t think that should’ve been shrugged off, and I don’t understand why everyone keeps watching the show when it doesn’t seem like they actually have any level of respect for TOS (despite insisting it’s a direct prequel)
I’m officially blacklisting Strange New Worlds and I refuse to acknowledge it’s existence from here on forward (and I hate that people won’t understand how serious this is because of the jokes of “all Star Trek fans hate the new shows”), I just needed to get this off my chest so I could move forward, I just hope everyone else continues to properly tag it here and on ao3 so that it can actually be avoided

I don't know if I can judge the season finale of SNW S2 on its own yet, in general, I want to see the conclusion of a 2 parter to judge it. Especially since a lot of the things here are set up for the conclusion. I do think that Una felt a lot more solid here, and I'm seeing the qualities in her that can elevate her into Captaincy.
Rebecca Romjin hadn't had a lot to do in the show despite being the focus in the second episode. And I'm eager for her to do more
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This look here? I want to see more of this Una.
Also reminds me of the moments when Colonel Eve Baird gets Serious. And about to kick major butt.
Another thing of joy for me in this show is Pelia and how it seems she's a tough (but fair) Professor.
This whole scene was my favorite:
Tumblr media
The way Scotty's face falls is just amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOL, Pelia's face. The last person Pelia expected to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His face. I think Baby Scotty is my favorite re-cast of a legacy character. He just works. And the actor is the first real Scottish actor to play the role apparently!
But also:
Tumblr media
I love her delivery of this line: "The hell is this supposed to be?!"
Like, I think Scotty does great work but he always comes about his solutions in the sloppiest and most slapdash way.
Tumblr media
He's such a baby! Protect him!
ETA: also there are some weird opinions about Pike floating around -- just because he hesitated for a few seconds how to respond. It's a cliffhanger hook, time feels longer than it actually is!

I like the alternate versions of Kirk from SNW. They all aren't quite him, but each one carries facets of him. I wonder if SNW will eventually bring the real Kirk for an episode.
They did for a fraction of a second for that heartbreaking moment with La'an for episode 3 of season 2. (I just wanted to hug her tightly. Poor La'an.) But I guess we'll see.

I brought you here. If we can fix this, maybe-maybe the device could bring us both back.

I think what is so interesting about SNW tackling the Gorn is that they are not flinching away from the fact that the Gorn are both objectively horrifying monsters and also a fully sentient, highly evolved species that dos not fit into the 'mindless space monster' box.
Like the opening of the episode sees Pike and Admiral Holmes arguing, where Holmes is trying to be diplomatic--they don't fully understand the Gorn, they're trying to avoid a war, sometimes a 'monster' is just something we don't understand--and Pike is so adamant:
"Sometimes a monster is just a monster."
And the thing is!!! They're both right!!! The Gorn are monsters, but they are monsters because they evolved to be monsters, and that is simply what they have to do to survive--they can't not be monsters, biologically speaking.
And man, I just love that a show that had a full on musical episode literally LAST WEEK turns around and hits us with, "if you can only exist through the suffering of others, do you deserve to?"
Incredible. No notes. Delighted to see where this goes next season.

I have to admit, I enjoyed the musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New World (Season 2, Episode 9) more than I expected to.
If you watched it, what was your favourite song? I liked all of them. But I think Uhura's solo spoke most to me.

Have you watched the first episode of Strange New Worlds yet? I wanna know your thoughts
THANK YOU FOR THE OPPURTUNITY, DISTINGUISHED PANEL OF JUDGES (spoilers, seriously do not read if you havent watched it! its so good, you should do it unsullied)
okay so first and foremost: i fucking loved it. it was the best live action pilot of a star trek show since DS9- i thought the writing was so fun and energetic, and the characters/ cast are POPPING off the screen. im so excited for this season, i think its going to be a return to form in a lot of ways and i think that'll be a breath of fresh air. (i know some people are sad SNW doesn't seem to be taking risks, format wise, and you know; i like that picard and disco did something new and broke the serial mold that DS9 cracked for them. but i also love episodic television and i think having SNW be episodic functions as a great connective tissue between DISCO and TOS!)
the cast is FUCKING STELLAR!!!!! THEYRE SO GOOD! we know i love ethan & anton & rebecca's takes already, but what little we got of everyone else has me DROOLING. also im in love with ortegas already so. lesbian me, confirmed. (also set design & lighting is so much better than disco... holy shit)
i also loved the choice to open with a mission that the Red Angel incident caused; i think its a great way to introduce how that situation is still heavily affecting both pike AND spock, as well as how Starfleet was clearly not equipped for that level of conflict and now have to grow as well.
now... that's not to say i don't have critiques. because obviously, im not pleased with the spock/ t'pring stuff. i don't like how either character was written in their interactions and i think their scenes weaken the relationship we see in TOS. i know im a gay spock truther and people love to give me shit about that, (which you know... is another issue we wont get into here) but setting my personal spock truth aside; it was still a weak choice. i think tpring and spock work best when presented as foils and peers who are forced into a bad situation. the way they both get OUT of that situation (their engagement) is what defines both them and the fundamental difference b/w vulcans & humans: tpring functions within the traditional system to dissolve their union, as where spock breaks form completely and creates a new solution. framing their relationship like they did in the pilot weakens that decision on a whole. (& im not someone whos like "oh you have to stay totally adherent to established canon!" either but these interactions also felt out place when compared to how t'pol's engagement went? or is that just me?)
however, im also holding judgement. because i think one way to interpret this spock trying to follow michael's final advice (yeah yeah i have michael brain rot, sue me i dont care.) in spock's head, tpring IS the person farthest from him (she, again, represents the archetypical vulcan and everything about that society that he doesn't fit- and, they don't really like each other. they were forced together, they did not chose this.) this is spock reaching out, trying his damnest to respect what his sister wanted for him, even though she meant something totally different (canonically, or metacanonically at least, she was talking about kirk-) so it could very much crumble into the relationship we see between tpring and spock in TOS.
regardless, i like how spock was written outside these scenes and you can tell ethan loves playing him. and the tpring actress is really serving, i hope she gets more outside of spock! uhura is already a delight, i cannot wait to dive more into her and see what celia does because theyre so talented; i love la'an's voice and presence and i can't wait for her and #1 to have scenes together! pike is so charming and well written and i love how he interacts with his crew. chapel is deranged and i love that choice, m'benga is such a good CMO. i am so pleased with this episode, i really am!
oh also this is a sam kirk stan blog now. called it, i called it SO HARD. AGAIN I CALLED IT AGAIN--

Broken Circle
Finished watching SNW s2e1, and man, am I glad to have this crew back, and with a pretty classic “Fuck Capitalism and Fuck War Profiteering” Episode at that!
Looks like Uhura is officially comms officer, eh? I loved seeing her absolutely tackle the role with gusto here - protective of her station, immediately being able to nail down obscure Klingon dialects, and the whole nine yards. I'm so happy for her. <3
Una and Chris. God, what a team. I am so looking forward to the courtroom drama that reunites them.
I absolutely love Pelia, and she is EXACTLY who I want to be when I grow up. The take-no-shit cleverness combined with a bit of the etheriality and a mischievous streak a mile long? That is EXACTLY my bag. She might edge out Avarasala for my favorite weird old lady in Scifi if she keeps this up! Poor Spock, having his Mom's ex-girlfriend as the chief engineer though...
It feels like they took the Season hiatus as an excuse to reboot La'an's character? I know they made Oriana kinda give her a new outlook on life, but while I see glimpses of her old character there, she definitely seems a lot lighter and less serious than last season. She wouldn't be the first character to get a huge makeover and a new personality after a show's 1st season, but I kinda miss the old La'an. We'll see where she goes though, I'm glad that whole "Leaving to help Oriana" thing at the end of last season wasn't writing her out of the show as I half-feared!
I admit I was not a fan of the Klingon War in Discovery, but SNW used it to very interesting effect here. Seeing multiple members of the crew dealing with the trauma in their ways, feeling what that did to them was absolutely heart-rending. Ortegas casually talking about how to avoid the Klingons, and then M'Benga and Chapel revealing that their dislike of war isn't just standard Star Trek philosophy, but a deep distaste and sorrow learned from direct experience.
I also loved seeing Chapel and M'Benga as a team here. SNW has served them both so well. We see their unhesitanting unspoken decision to help the sick together. We get glimpses of their kind of mentor-mentee relationship, but also a deeper camraderie, possibly one forged by battle- did they serve together somewhere in the war? Was Chapel a civilian near-casualty of war saved by Mbenga and his serum, or did he just tell her about his experiences while they served together in the Enterprise medbay? It lends a lot of color and nuance to things. Chapel wasn't simply a civilian exchange student on the Enterprise, she's following a friend/savior, one she is a lot closer to than we ever knew. I hope we get more of their backstory.
I'm still not sure what I think of the direction they're going with Spock. It seems like the Gorn incident unlocked something, and he's gone, if not fully human, certainly very obviously struggling with his human side. What happens between now and TOS that causes him to retreat back so fully to Vulcan discipline and teachings? I'll be interested to see where it goes.
Chapel and Spock especially - we know that by TOS, Chapel's attraction to Spock seems completely one-sided. So the decision here to make it apparently mutual... Again, what happens? Do Spock and Chapel have a fling? It feels like an overly easy to explain T'Pring's actions in Amok Time, but I'm willing to see how they play it out. It certainly lends an air of tragedy to Chapel's character in TOS. Now she's not simply pining over a man she can't have, but an ex-lover who has closed himself off out of shame and sorrow.
Spock being given his iconic harp by M'Benga reminds me of one of the reasons I've grown to dislike Prequels, frankly, the whole - they feel like they MUST show the "Origin" of small events or character quirks from the original series that didn't really need an origin story. Some things don't need an Origin Story. Still, the music is pretty, at least. Hopefully we get another Spock/Uhura duet before the season is up?
The End though. The Gorn thing. I've said it in the past, but I did not care for much of the Gorn's characterization back in Season 1. The whole point of the Gorns' most iconic Appearance in TOS was that the Federation misunderstood them, that they were merely defending their territory, and had kept encountering the Federation in situations that were just bad for diplomacy, that maybe, there could have been another way, a peaceful way.
So SNW turning around and just making them an absolute chaotic evil race of near-feral monsters that treat other sapient races like cattle and breeding fodder kind of felt like a betrayal of the Spirit of Star Trek - just one, but kind of major. I'm hoping this Gorn war storyline can redeem that, depending on how they handle it, but again, we run into the Sequel curse -  there is only so much they do because we know the Federation fears and mistrusts the Gorn into the TOS era.
Seriously though, Overall I still very much like SNW, and its certainly the best Modern Trek, and probably the best Trek has been since the DS9 era. Looking forward to next week already!
