chapter synopsis & links
chapter one; you travel to the sleepy town of moorwick in search of your missing father. with little more than some luggage and your car, you're immediately steeped in the mysterious ways of the residents and of their local boogeyman— the headless horseman.
chapter two; you spend a better portion of your day in the archives of the moorwick public library researching the phenomena surrounding the town. by nightfall, you wander into the haunted forest to confront these myths yourself
chapter three; with the town of moorwick abuzz for the parade, you make every effort to escape your pact with the horseman, only to be thwarted by suspicious circumstances. when you’re lured back to the atticus, your next encounter with the horseman is anything but pleasant
chapter four; some time has passed and you continue to return to the atticus, no closer to solving the mystery of the horseman’s head. after an encounter with the dead, along with something far worse, you were beginning to understand the horseman’s existence wasn’t so straightforward.
chapter five; you could no longer refute that your relationship with the horseman was more complex than you initially thought it to be. what did it mean? Just as you’re coming to terms with this, colson offers a gift that could change everything. and moorwick’s more prestigious residents let you know that there are eyes always watching.
chapter six; you are determined to get answers from the horseman regarding the whereabouts of your father. It goes horribly awry. to make matters worse, new information comes your way about the peculiarities of moorwick, making the search for the horseman’s head far more complex and there are some people determined to keep it that way.
chapter seven; following that bloody night in the forest with the horseman, you couldn’t bring yourself to go back. It’s only after a startling revelation from asta lang that you find the courage to return; albeit you find that the horseman isn’t your only encounter.
chapter eight; the mystery deepens as you confront the one person who may know more about colson’s intentions than anyone else: theodore sinclair. As the nature of your relationship to the horseman evolves, you’re left wondering what it all means.
chapter nine;
chapter ten;
chapter eleven;

this is a series repost from my deleted blog officiallytheduchess/cardeneiv. chapters 1-8 are not up-to-date with my current writing style, thus you are likely to see shifts in focus and storytelling as a result.
I do intend to revamp this series once officially completely and rebuild it from the ground up. as my skills as a writer have grown, so has potential for this story and the world within.

Hi, I’m looking for fics where Kagome and/or Inuyasha deal with depression/anxiety. I like longer stories but one-shots are totally fine too. I would prefer stories from before 2019 so there’s no Yashahime influence. Also please no sessrin in the recs. Thank you so much!
Hi anon, thank you for the ask! Most of the fics we could find that fit your criteria are one shots, but there are a few longer stories sprinkled throughout. In order to provide more reading material, we split the list into stories written in 2019 or earlier and stories that were written after 2019 but contain no references to Yashahime (characters, plot, or otherwise). There shouldn't be any SessRin references in any of the fics either.
This is a difficult subject to search for without having read a story in its entirety, so we strongly encourage anyone who knows of any others to leave more recs in the reblogs/replies!

He Just Wouldn't Stop by @artistefish (G)
Just because she's back doesn't mean there aren't scars. Some wounds take more than time to heal, and some never heal at all. A post-canon look at an unexpected repercussion of Kagome's three year absence.

Guilty Hero by Eggry (T)
The city is recovering after a crippling war against Naraku. But while time moves on, Inu-Yasha doesn't. Plagued with guilt over a terrible deed, alcohol is his only escape from the nightmare of reality. At their wit's end with him, Sango and Miroku are on the verge of giving up until Kagome Higurashi arrives to take him under her wing.
--
Sleep, My Dear by Stars_Sky_See (T)
Kagome was quickly adjusting to her new life with the help of her now husband. Life had all around been easier since her return and everyone was grateful. However, life wasn’t so merciful, with every two steps forward there was always one step back.
--
The Ghosts of Suicide Forest by @splendentgoddess (T)
Aokigahara, known by some as Suicide Forest. It is a place of mystery, beauty and death. Roughly 100 people go there annually to commit suicide, but why? The better question, though, is can Kagome find and rescue Yuka before it is too late?
--
Broken Glass by SleepWalkingChickens (M)
Growing up is hard, especially when things are changing. Kagome is plunged into a new world, complete with new problems. The past is hard to let go of and baggage builds up. Unravel it and you’re met with truth. Can love win over Inuyasha's sins?
--
It Goes Like This by @witchygirl99 (G)
It goes like this.
“Hey! I haven’t seen you in a while!” Kagome exclaims, smiling at him. Her eyes are dark brown and beautiful, captivating.
Five different answers pop into his head, all of them friendly and inviting for conversation. It’s not what comes out.
Inuyasha isn't the main character of anyone's story. With Kagome, that feeling starts to change.

[Post 2019 w/ No Yashahime References]
Pictures of Happiness by @memilylove (M)

The path is not easy, but he soon finds that perhaps there is a point to all this. Is it really possible to be happy again and to find that you love another?

Shattered by My-Crazy-Awesome-Sox (T)
Oneshot: Leading a double life has got to be stressful. What happens when it all starts falling apart for Kagome? Everything has been pent up for too long, and now it's all crashing down around her. For anyone who's ever had a breakdown...
--
A Horse With No Name by @roseheartwhitefox (T)
The story of what happened to Inuyasha after Kagome disappeared when the well closed for 3 years, heavily referencing the episode "The Old Sugarman Place" from "BoJack Horseman". I feel as if after everything that happened and Kagome disappeared, Inuyasha would need time to grieve the loss. This is that story. Deals with themes of depression, loneliness, and loss.
--
Stay by @akitokihojo (G)
He nodded again, pulling away to gently press his forehead to hers for a moment. "I get it." Inuyasha breathed before leaning back to look her in the eyes. "But, one of these days you'll understand that no matter what happens, I won't take a damn thing back. You'll see that I don't want it back. I feel like my heart's safer with you, anyway."
--
Kagome's Unwitting Depression by @cstormsinukagblog (M)
Kagome sees something that she isn't meant to see, and it kind of breaks her. Can she and Inuyasha repair the damage before she gives up hope?
--
Breaking the Habit: Rewrite by @kstewdeux (M)
After being separated for six years, Inuyasha and Kagome are reunited on her side of the well. TW: SI, Mental Illness.
--
The Voice Inside My Head by @fawn-eyed-girl (E)
When Kagome returns to the Feudal era a week after a particular nasty fight with Inuyasha, he realizes something’s not right. Is it too late for Inuyasha and Kagome—have the years of fighting broken them apart for good? Or will they be able to find a way forward, together?

Chapter Seven - In the Before
Chapter Seven - In the Before
—-
2021-
After taking the weekend off of work to avoid Jessica Roberts, Sunday night rolled around, and as you set out your outfit for the next morning, you were reminded distinctively of nights before school, that same dreadful feeling.
You also thought about the moment right before you picked a card.
The knock at your door was unexpected, so you frowned even as you opened it, and a short woman with curly blonde hair smiled widely at you.
“Y/N!” she shouted, throwing her hands out, like she was gonna hug you, but you pulled back.
“Do I know-?” But then she adjusted her glasses in a way that was so distinctively her. “Misty?”
She smiled wider.
“And I brought a friend!” she winked, and you frowned even more, tempted to shut the door on her face.
You peered around her, until a voice came from just next to you, a hand suddenly resting on your doorframe.
“Y/N,” she said, and it was the voice that you could hear through violence, through mountains and rivers and thousands of miles. The voice that brought you through the violence and into the peace, brought you out of the wilderness.
Natalie,” you whispered after a moment. Her face appeared around the corner, and she looked just like she did in 2019- black leather jacket, black hair, her lips pulled into a tight line.
“Y/N,” she said again. Like she was saying your name just to say it, just to make sure you were there. “Travis… Travis is dead.”
—-
1996-
After your turn of carrying Coach Ben, you were eager to be near the front, closer to the end, following close behind Van and the compass she had taken from the cockpit.
You kept your eyes peeled for anything edible along the trail you followed, naturally carved out by generations of animals moving from the forest to the lake.
You stopped, crouching down to brush aside a small string of english ivy, only to find inedible winterberries. You sighed, standing back up and taking another good look at this section of the forest.
Someone stood next to you.
“You know, it’s pretty cool that your mom’s a botanist.” You looked at Natalie and smiled softly, wondering if you could run your fingers through her hair like it was strands of ivy.
“Yeah,” you muttered, falling into step beside her.
“I mean it’s really cool for us, because we would be even more screwed than we already are if we didn’t know what was safe to eat out here,” she laughed. “I probably would have eaten those elderberries or whatever raw and died.”
“You go around eating random stuff in the forest a lot?”
“It’s my favorite past-time,” she chuckled, and suddenly her hand brushed against yours, and it was like the lightning that had brought your plane down.
Her skin felt like violence, everything about her did, but you still wanted to sink into her.
You weren’t a fool. Natalie was beautiful, but what was even the possibility of her liking girls?
You pushed the thought out of your mind and shut up before you could say anything stupid.
—-
2021-
You had loved Natalie far too recklessly and far too much. Inthe wilderness, you loved her enough to even let her eat you. But after, when you came back, and saw that love wasn’t about suffering- you still couldn’t let her go.
She was as much deep into your soul as the wilderness was.
If someone were to cut you open, dig around in your soul, they would find your messed-up organs inside, and her, and the wilderness.
She was violence, and once, in a world full of violence, she made you feel safe and loved. She held you at night and made sure there was meat in your stomach, even if you had to hunt it, or kill it.
But in the real world, you weren’t hungry, and you were still scared- but not in a way that bonded you to her. Not anymore.
After Misty had invited herself in, and Nat had followed her, all you had been able to do was sit on the couch. Natalie stood, far away from you, while Misty made you something to drink and sat next to you, rubbing your shoulder.
Even after all these years, you couldn’t tell if her sympathetic smile was genuine.
Everyone in that plane crash had left something permanent, a scar, on your memory. You remembered everyone who died- from Pilot Fred to everyone who was killed to keep the rest alive. To keep you alive.
“How- how can he be dead?”
“Oh, he killed himself,” Misty frowned, much too calm and happy considering that someone you once had killed alongside with was dead. “We found him- hanging from a construction crane.”
“I don’t believe he killed himself.”
You looked at Natalie, and now it was your turn to look her up and down, your eyes wide and your bones stiff, mouth parted slightly even now in horror. You could imagine a pair of work boots swinging from the air.
It was a while before you could find the courage to speak.
“How did you find me, Natalie?”
Misty took a breath as if to answer-
“I didn’t want to, Y/N. I got the message loud and clear but- Travis is dead, n-” she stopped herself from saying that word.
You cut her a sharp glare, squeezing the handle of the untouched coffee mug Misty had made you.
There was too much associated with that word, an entire other life you had lived- drawing cards, eating too-tough meat, sinewy and chewy, her voice that you loved, whispering, calling you that nickname as she handed you another piece of your friends.
Once you had loved that name. You had loved being hers.
But you were not that girl anymore.
And Natalie wasn’t either.
“Sorry,” she whispered after a moment. She stared into your eyes then looked away, digging her hands into her pockets.
This- this wasn’t the Natalie you knew.
The girl who you had loved in the wilderness wasn’t the same girl as you loved in 2019. But still- things stayed the same. This was like an entire different person. Like someone had crawled into your skin.
You imagined a skeletal hand, clutching a pair of spindly scissors, making a slice down her back to step into.
“But you deserved to know.”
You had always loved her far too much.
—-
1996-
You were the first to smell it. It smelled like the jaws of death, like the remnant of every horrible meal- innocent or not.
“What’s that smell?” you asked, pressing your sleeve to your face.
“I don’t know,” Natalie said back, looking around the forest, until Lottie gasped. “Holy shit.”
Flies swarmed about it, reminding you of the sound a hot summer day made, a glittering blue pool, something cold in your hand, a bright sun- there wasn’t the carcass of a bear, left half eaten, being picked on by a crow. It’s organs fell out of it’s ripped apart stomach, and the blood on the ground had long since dried.
“Oh, God, I’m gonna puke,” you heard Jackie moan.
You groaned to yourself, looking away from the dead thing.
“Woah. Sick,” Travis remarked.
“What could have done that?” Shauna asked, and she was right. What could kill a fucking bear?
“A wolf, probably,” Coach Ben said.
“They can kill a fucking bear?” Nat asked.
“Yeah. Wolves can kill anything if the pack’s big enough.”
Nat stared at it longer, you standing next to her, not wanting to drift far away- even like this.
“Let’s keep moving,” she announced suddenly, sharing a look with you before marching down the trail.
—-
The closer you got to the lake, the more serene the forest became, like this place was a truce- nothing bad could come near the lake, near that vital life-giving place of water.
But, the journey was wearing on all of you, and you were all slowing down. And without the sports experience like the other girls had, you were struggling especially.
“Ah!” you yelped as your foot got caught on a root- you could barely even look at the ground, your eyes wanting to close, wanting to give up. Not even the promise of the lake was enough anymore.
Natalie grabbed onto you quick, one of her arms around your chest, like it was on the plane, the other gripping onto your shoulder.
“Woah, you okay?” she asked, helping you walk over to the side of the trail, to lean against a tall oak tree.
“I’m not a soccer player,” you groaned, “I just write about it. I don’t- don’t have the stamina like you guys…”
“Hah, hah,” Natalie said, squeezing your hand. “You’re fine. I feel like I’m dying too. Don’t worry,” You shot her an exasperated look, and she studied your face, before looking back down the path. “This shit is way longer than four miles. What if we missed it?” she asked, raising her voice so the rest of the team could hear her.
“From the angle of the sun, it looked just left of due north.” Taissa responded, her voice sounding heavy and weighted. Natalie rolled her eyes, tugging you back onto the path with a hand wrapping around your arm.
“Oh, great. ‘Left.’ That’s a precise way of doing it.” Jackie said, sarcasm dropping from her words.
“I’m not a fucking cartographer,” Tai shot back.
“Or maybe you saw a mirage.”
Each step like it was weighed down by a hundred pound weight. You felt sick and horrible, and you wanted nothing more than to lie still in the shade, or jump into whatever lake Taissa had seen, real or not.
You would even jump into a pool of blood, a swamp, as long as in your mind it felt like cool water.
“Oh, shit.” Van suddenly said, waving her arm frantically. “Oh, hell yeah, bitches!” she shouted, and when you looked at the direction she was running off to, there was a lake just visible through the trees.

Conclusion: Pro / Contra
+ relaxing gameplay, unique characters, intriguing story, visual-novel-ish

Epstein allegedly sexually assaulted multiple teenage girls. Some of his victims were as young as 14 years old, prosecutors have said. He committed the crimes at his homes in Manhattan; Palm Beach, Florida; and his private island near St. Thomas.
In 2019, federal prosecutors charged him with one count of sex trafficking conspiracy and one count of sex trafficking with underage females. Epstein died by suicide in his Manhattan jail cell about a month after being arrested, and the charges against him were thus dropped.
His partner Maxwell, who was also involved in the crimes, is now serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted in December 2021. She was accused of helping Epstein recruit and sexually abuse minor girls.

Non-Spoiler Review of Remembrance of Earth's Past
Tumblr media
Remembrance of Earth's Past or known as (The Three-Body Trilogy) by Liu Cixin • Book 1: The Three-Body Problem • Book 2: The Dark Forest • Book 3: Death's End • Book 4: The Redemption of Time (written by Baoshu) (Optional)
The opinion by many out in the world is that the “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” is the greatest science fiction series every written. Written by Liu Cixin, a Chinese computer engineer and science fiction writer. Liu Cixin is a nine-time winner of China's Galaxy Award. In 2015 Liu Cixin won the Hugo Award for his novel “The Three-Body Problem” as well as the 2017 Locus Award for “Death's End.” Liu Cixin also won the Chinese Nebula Award. In English translations of his works, his name is given as Cixin Liu. He is a member of China Science Writers Association and the vice president of Shanxi Writers Association. He is sometimes called "Da Liu" (Big Liu) by his fellow science fiction writers in China.
The “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” is the first Science Fiction series to hit the national spotlight in China’s history. It is so popular China holds the series in high regard as a National Treasure. The book series was published from 2006-2011 and translated into English by Ken Liu starting in 2014 to 2019. American audiences are only now discovering this masterpiece of Science Fiction and Existential Horror. Netflix has a show planned for 2024 for “The Three-Body Problem,” the first book. It is uncertain if all the books will be converted for the show or if they are only doing the first book. The main trilogy take place over a few hundred years starting in and around the aftermath of World War 2 and go up to the year 2400+ to another 18 million years into humanity’s future. The optional 4th book which isn’t officially part of the canon but has the permission from Liu Cixin. I personally count the fourth book as part of the canon, but it is also ignored by other readers of the series. It is totally optional and to me does not hurt the story, plot or characters. It just gives the series a proper end rather than the ambiguous ending left at the end of “Death’s End.”
This BLOG serves as a NON-Spoiler introduction to the series. Here we are just going to describe the basic plots of the four books and some thoughts about them. The hope is I grab your interest enough so that you all go and either read these books or listen to them on audiobook. The audiobooks were very well produced and have that radio/theater quality and style to them. Very few science fiction novels actually change how I think. This series absolutely did that with its concepts of first contact, the dark forest theory, game theory, nihilism, time, relativity, relativistic time, reality possibly being an infinitely long loop, love, death, infinity, multiple-dimensional realities, macro and micro quantum reality, religion not being real and existentialism.
The Three-Body Problem (Book 1):
“Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, the greatest scientists around the world start to commit suicide, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion.” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20518872-the-three-body-problem#?ref=nav_brws
The Dark Forest (Book 2):
“Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion — four centuries in the future. The aliens' human collaborators have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, supercomputers printed on protons. These subatomic particles allow the Trisolarans instant access to all human information in real time. They have the ability to disrupt Earth’s ability to create technologies greater than the Trisolarans. This all means that Earth's defense plans are exposed to the enemy. Only the human mind remains a secret. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a daring plan that grants four men enormous resources to design secret strategies hidden through deceit and misdirection from Earth and Trisolaris alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists but the fourth is a total unknown. Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead.” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23168817-the-dark-forest
Death's End (Book 3):
“Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge. With human science advancing daily and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations will soon be able to co-exist peacefully as equals without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. But the peace has also made humanity complacent. Cheng Xin, an aerospace engineer from the early 21st century, awakens from hibernation in this new age. She brings with her knowledge of a long-forgotten program, “yhe Staircase Program,” dating from the beginning of the Trisolar Crisis, and her very presence may upset the delicate balance between two worlds. Will humanity reach for the stars or die in its cradle?” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25451264-death-s-end
The Redemption of Time (written by Baoshu, Book 4):
“Set in the universe of “Three-Body Problem trilogy,” “The Redemption of Time” continues the events from the end of “Death’s End.” This original story by Baoshu―published with Liu’s support―envisions the aftermath of the conflict between humanity and the extraterrestrial Trisolarans. In the midst of an interstellar war, Yun Tianming found himself on the front lines. Riddled with cancer, he chose to end his life by entering “the Staircase Program,” only to find himself flash frozen and launched into space where the Trisolaran First Fleet awaited. Captured and tortured beyond endurance for decades, Yun eventually succumbed to helping the aliens subjugate humanity in order to save Earth from complete destruction. Granted a healthy clone body by the Trisolarans, Yun has spent his very long life in exile as a traitor to the human race. Nearing the end of his existence at last, he suddenly receives another reprieve―and another regeneration. A consciousness calling itself “The Spirit,” later, “The Master,” has recruited him to wage war against an entity that threatens the existence of the entire universe, “the Lurker.” However, Yun refuses to be a pawn again and makes his own plans to save humanity’s future…” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36262251-the-redemption-of-time
My Opinion:
I will do a bigger BLOG-breakdown of the series with heavy spoilers at some point in the future. This BLOG is for people who have not read or listened to the series and have seen my posts using quotes from all four novels for the past three months. I tend to post quotes from the book I am listening to when I do my workouts, nature walks or treadmill atmospheres. This book series is nothing but brilliant. It’s no wonder China has been trying to adapt this to visual media. As of the writing of this BLOG there are five listings for this on IMDB.com for different kinds of visual media for this property. The only one I think I will have access to, that I can actually watch, will be the 2024 Netflix show on the “Three-Body Problem.” Depending on if you read the optional fourth book, “The Redemption of Time,” the meaning of these novels take on their own meaning.
• What Is Real? • Is Reality Real? • Do We Even Know The Difference If Any of “This” Is Real? • Does Anything At All Have Actual Meaning? • Does Anything Actually “Matter?”
The phrase "This has all happened before, and it will all happen again" is a line from the reimagined science fiction series "Battlestar Galactica." In the context of the show, it reflects the idea of cyclical history and the recurrence of events. The idea is that history repeats itself, and the same patterns and conflicts reoccur throughout time. This is a theme over the course of the four novels that is heavily explored.
This series is sometimes referred to as “existential horror.” This isn’t to imply horror in the traditional sense. Like, say, the existential horror of aliens invading Earth, like in, “Independence Day,” a monster on the ship “Alien,” or the everyday reality we live in not being real at all, “the Matrix.” It is more existentially terrifying from concepts it raises and how those concepts are dealt from the different perspective of these ideas coming from the different cultural perspective of a computer engineer in China rather than our standard Western way of telling a story, dealing with characters and the existential themes of the nature of our Universe. How this series deals with these questions in our everyday society. An example I will pull from, that really isn’t a spoiler, but how love between two people is dealt with here. China handles these things much differently, culturally and artistically, than say, how American writers tend to write about love in a fictional story. Once you get used to how the information is being displayed in the confines of the story and characters; the easier you get lost in the existential terror of the events as they unfold. To me, listening to these books was like how I saw “The Matrix” for the first time or “Alien” for the first time. That it was more than just a monster movie or insane visual action. You get lost in the concept of “what if” this could all be at play in some point in Humanity’s near or perhaps distant future. That “what if” this is all some sort of simulation or video game where the plot is so fixed that any choice you make has no impact, imprint or evidence on the outcome of the game. That no matter what you do in the game; you end up at the same boss fight at the end, with the same life, the same weapons, the same everything. It's these types of environments where the lack of realism is felt and where we eventually realize that something is not right with said reality. Human beings possess a kind of intuitive alarm in our minds. We hear a voice that isn’t a voice. It is a thought, but we describe to others as a voice. Others do not hear what you heard. They only know of it because you described it to them. However, they do not actually know for themselves. An example would be; we trust when we look up at the Moon that it is there, but you, I, most, have never been there to touch, see, step foot on it to know it if is actually there or not. Granted, we do know that it is there. We see it from Earth, we see its impact on the tides. We feel its gravity. Our mind alerts us when something doesn't feel real. That is usually how we know we are in a dream. Some things seem real, some seem normal and then you see a giant spider in the sky where the Sun should be. Eventually the brain will tell you what is real and what is not real. It is when our realities are flipped upside down and inside out, like a tesseract, that feelings on reality become existential horror. If we were in a simulation of reality and everything was so perfect that we’d began to perceive the artificiality of our surroundings.
Reality is never perfect in the concept of what we humans think of as perfection. In reality perfection and infinity are one-in-the-same. That; “on a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero. It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything. You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. You are not a unique snowflake. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world...” ― Chuck Palahniuk, “FIGHT CLUB.” Granted this is not the Universe of “Fight Club.” However, it could be. Some of the quotes in Palahniuk’s “Fight Club” and “Choke” speak to me in a way that his characters tend to live in a reality-bubble where the main character is always questioning whether or not the reality they are in is a real one. “The ability to let that which does not matter truly slide. Self-improvement is masturbation. Maybe self-destruction is the answer.” ― Chuck Palahniuk, “FIGHT CLUB”
If reality seems too good to be true or too erratic to be natural it can lead to dissatisfaction and rejection of that reality. That is why I say if you do not want your reality shattered. If you do not want to think of humanity, you, us, everything, every moment, every lover, every taste, touch, smell, sight seen or idea in your mind as just another grain of sand on an infinite beach and that grain having no effect whatsoever, no impact, imprint or evidence on the outcome of the collective sand on that infinite beach. That no matter what you do as a grain of sand on the beach you end up with the same life, the same job, the same woes, the same loves, tastes, fixations, disappointments, depressions, disappointments; the same everything. Then do not read these books. If you believe in God. You might not anymore at the end of these books. If you believe all life is precious you also may not believe that anymore. That is how impactful this series can be. However, if you are just a science fiction junky, like myself, and want your mind blown by an amazing story, I implore you to read or listen to these.
The Three-Body Series explores the grandeur and mysteries of the universe. It underscores the contrast between human mythologies and the scientific understanding of the cosmos. The vastness of space, the insignificance of humanity in the face of cosmic forces, and the pursuit of knowledge and scientific truth. The series invites readers to contemplate the Universe's enormity and complexity, highlighting the importance of scientific exploration. Liu Cixin's work combines science, philosophy, and storytelling to convey a sense of wonder about the Universe, which forced me to question our place in the cosmos. This series will intersect with science, philosophy, and human existence, making it a compelling read for those who appreciate profound intellectual exploration in science fiction literature.This series not only offers a riveting science fiction story, but also encourages readers to contemplate the nature of knowledge, the mysteries of the universe, time, and the implications of our place within it. It's a compelling invitation to embrace the wonders of science and the unknown, making it a must-read for those who appreciate both intellectual depth and an engaging narrative.
“The creation myths of the various peoples and religions of the world pale when compared to the glory of the big bang.” Liu Cixin, “The Three-Body Problem”

Ramble of the month September 2023: Phase 3 of the Batman Begins-Led DCEU
As I said last month, my aim for my September ramble is to continue looking into my hypothetical alternate superhero film universes by moving on to phase 3 of a DCEU in which Batman Begins led the way.  Having outlined phase 1 in March of this year and phase 2 in June, I am glad to be retaining a consistent pacing with my rambles on this subject.  However, I’m also concerned about my lack of anything more varied to discuss, and hopefully by October that will have changed.
So, first things first, as with last month’s exploration of phase 3 of my 90’s based MCU, let’s start with a quick re-cap on the previous phases;
Phase 1:
2005: Batman Begins
2006: Man of Steel
2007: Wonder Woman
2008: The Dark Knight, Green Lantern
2009: The Flash, Man of Steel 2
2010: Aquaman, Justice League
Phase 2:
2011: Wonder Woman 2, Green Lantern 2, Green Arrow
2012: Hawkman, Batman/Superman, Aquaman 2
2013: John Constantine, The Flash 2, Suicide Squad
2014: Justice League 2, Green Arrow 2, Batman: The Long Crusade
There are several key difference between the two phases.  The first phase was very much about establishing the lead heroes that would then form the Justice League and doing that with those heroes.  It also featured a slow build-up to the production of superhero films on a very regular basis.  Phase 2 then expanded on this by adding in more heroes, while at the same time straining the relationships of lead characters with the public in their universe and with each other.  By the tail-end of phase 2, Batman has seemingly betrayed the Justice League in an adaptation of the Tower of Babel story arc, been slightly vindicated by a few leaguers being mind-controlled and having to be stopped by Green Arrow in that hero’s second film, and we’ve the Suicide Squad rolling around as well.
All that being said, we’ve also had Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow and Batman gain their first proteges in phase 2, setting up for another form of team-up ensemble film, which is part of the phase 3 overview outlined below;
Phase 3:
2015: Shazam, Man of Steel 3, The Atom
2016: Wonder Woman 3, Batgirl, Teen Titans
2017: Green Lantern/Green Arrow, Shazam vs Black Adam, Suicide Squad 2
2018: Justice League: Darkseid Rising, Aquaman 3, Doom Patrol
As you can see, phase 3 continues to introduce new heroes alongside those already established, and at the same time, we’re also getting a mix of new and existing team combinations.  However, how does this all work in detail.  Well, let’s dive into the films of the third round in this alternate DCEU;
Shazam (2015) Directed by David F Sandberg
Billy Batson/Shazam = Zachary Gordon/Zachary Levi
Dr Thaddeus Sivana = Stanley Tucci
Freddy Freeman/"Shazam" Freddy = Chandler Riggs/Adam Brody
The Wizard = Forest Whitaker
Darla Dudley/"Shazam" Darla = Quvenzhané Wallis/Meagan Good
Mary Bromfield/Mary Marvel = Halston Sage/Michelle Borth
Eugene Choi/"Shazam" Eugene = Hudson Yang/Ross Butler
Pedro Peña/"Shazam" Pedro = Rico Rodriguez/DJ Cotrona
Rosa Vásquez = Marta Milans
Víctor Vásquez = Cooper Andrews
Shazam is one of those films from the real DCEU I would avoid changing too much just because Shazam isn’t my strongest area of DC lore to conceive any alternate ideas around.  That’s not to say I haven’t done so later in my ideas for this hypothetical film run, but rather that I wouldn’t have much luck changing the original film substantially.  As such, the director would remain the same and so would most of the cast.  The few I’ve changed have been down to either casting the actors from the real film elsewhere in this hypothetical film universe, or the fact that this would now be a 2015 film instead of a 2019 one.  The story of the film would also be about the same, but some of the references to other DC heroes might different based on the events of earlier films.
Man of Steel 3 (2015) Directed by Guillermo del Toro
Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent = Brandon Routh
Lois Lane = Kate Bosworth
Kara Zor-El/Supergirl = Dakota Fanning
Brainiac = Paul Bettany
General Harrison Hardcastle = Neal McDonough
Capt. Nathanial Adams/Captain Atom = Matt Bomer
John Corbin/Metallo = Orlando Bloom
Leslie Willis/Livewire = Danielle Panabaker
Claire Selton/Volcana = Kirsten Stewart
Martha Kent = Diane Lane
Jonathan Kent = Kevin Costner
Jor-El = Russell Crowe
Dr Emil Hamilton = Richard Schiff
Perry White = Sam Neill
Jimmy Olsen = Rider Strong
Cat Grant = January Jones
Steve Lombard = Josh Brolin
Capt. Maggie Sawyer = Jeri Ryan
Insp. Turpin = Colin Farrell
Bibbo Bibbowski = Luke Hemsworth
Discounting the Batman-Superman joint film from phase 2, this is our third solo instalment for Superman, and while film 1 was very much like the 2013 Man of Steel made a bit brighter compared to what Snyder did, the second film was a more classic Superman versus Lex Luthor and Metallo with an assist from the Martian Manhunter.  Film 3, however, looks at Superman after his bout of mind-controlled criminality in Green Arrow 2.  His relationship with the public and the governments of the world is strained, and when his cousin Supergirl crash-lands on Earth and accidentally does damage due to her newly manifested powers, things become even rockier.
To this end, a small super-group is formed by the US armed forces under the orders of General Hardcastle, which brings in military superhero Captain Atom at the head of a small team of otherwise villains sent after Superman.  However, little does anyone know that Supergirl has been tracked to Earth by Brainiac, and when he arrives, the true heroes and villains are dictated by who is willing to refocus on this new threat and who isn’t.  Most of the cast is retained from past films, with the Supergirl-to Volcana portion of the cast being all new.  As for picking Mr del Toro to direct, those who have read my previous rambles will know I’ve gone through Roland Emerich, Ron Howard and Rob Marshall on the films where Superman is somehow in the title.  This is because I think Superman is someone who benefits from a regular change in director to add some variety to the character.  Also, the man did great work on Blade II and also has prior comic-film experience from the original Hellboy films, so it’d be interesting to see him deal with a less anti-heroic protagonist.
The Atom (2015) Directed by Michael Nankin
Dr Ray Palmer/Atom = Tom Ellis
Jean Loring = Morena Baccarin
Norman Brawler = Elden Henson
Paul Hoben = Dominic Cooper
Professor Hyatt = David Hyde Pearce
David Clinton/Chronos = Richard T. Jones
Prof. Martin Stein = Victor Garber
Ronnie Raymond/Firestorm = Nick Jonas
Because of the power-set and civilian occupation of the Atom, I figured the director should be someone with some experience of dealing with the microscopic and forensic.  In short, it needed to be someone who had dealt with an episode of CSI at least once. As a result, I landed on the idea of Michael Nankin, who helmed the Star Trek-homage episode of CSI in its ninth season, making a cinematic directorial debut on this one.  The film is basically about Dr Ray Palmer becoming estranged from his wife as he cracks the means to shrink a human being, and then works to stop the time-travelling Chronos with the aid of Firestorm, a superhero composed of two beings in one.
As the film goes on, Palmer learns his wife is outright cheating on him, and when faced with Chronos has to ask the question; should he co-opt the villain’s time-travel tech to fix his marriage, or is that too close to Chronos’ abuses of the tech?  In that sense, I would really want to see this film look just at the disintegration of a romantic connection without trying to set up an alternate one.  Not all superhero romances have happy endings, and it would be good to showcase how life in super-tights can mess up a personal life well into the supposedly “happily ever after” stage.
Casting-wise, I kept the role of Stein the same as what Arrow-verse series the Flash gave us, but then picked a number of different actors for other roles based on who I thought might look right for the parts, be the right age, etc.  Several of the actors people will know from other superhero-related productions (Elden Henson was in the Netflix Daredevil series, Morena Baccarin is known for her roles in Gotham and the Deadpool films, and of course Dominic Cooper played the 1940’s/50’s version of Howard Stark in the MCU).
Wonder Woman 3 (2016) Directed by Patty Jenkins
Diana/Wonder Woman = Kate Beckinsale
Hippolyta = Connie Nielsen
Donna Troy/Wonder Girl = Ciara Bravo
Dr Alannah Troy = Demi Moore
Hades = David Tennant
Artemis = Rachael Taylor
Dr Julia Kapatelis = Rita Wilson
Vanessa Kapatelis = Elena Kampouris
"Sarge" Steel = Jeremy Renner
After having done two period-set Wonder Woman films under Trek alumni Gates McFadden, this third instalment of the Amazon’s solo adventures is handed over to Patty Jenkins and comes into the modern era.  In this film, Wonder Woman hasn’t made the same efforts as Superman and the Flash to rebuild her bridges following the mind-control incident in Green Arrow 2.  As a result, she is operating almost Batman-style within Washington DC, posing as an archaeological expert while secretly foiling crime.  However, this is interrupted when she discovers that one of her colleagues, Dr Alannah Troy, has sired a young girl with the Greek god Hades, and now Diana’s half-cousin is being sought by a cult bent on freeing Hades from Tartarus.
Except for Wonder Woman and her mother Hippolyta, this film is all-fresh casting, and the character of Alannah Troy and the new Wonder Girl origin are my own ideas, albeit slightly based on events from the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated shows.  This is because Donna Troy’s origins get very confused in the comics, and I think having Diana and Donna be cousins via their godly fathers provides a decent simplification for cinematic audiences.
Batgirl (2016) Directed by Gates McFadden & Reese Witherspoon
Barbara Gordon/Batgirl = Bella Thorne
Alysia Yeoh = Lana Condor
Reese Conroy = Ross Lynch
Dr Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn = Margot Robbie
Dr Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy = April Bowlby
James "Jim" Gordon = Gary Oldman
Det. Harvey Bullock = Donal Logue
Det. Renee Montoya = Penelope Cruz
Bruce Wayne/Batman = Christian Bale
The Joker = Willem Dafoe
Keeping with the idea of female-led franchises on and off-screen, we come to a solo film for Batgirl.  This one is helmed by Gates McFadden and Reese Witherspoon, the latter being someone who I am aware started her own production company to try and put female-centric stories on the big screen.  As such, I’m thinking she might well jump at the chance to co-direct a Batgirl solo film with another female director.  The plot would differ a little from the comics; instead of trying to clear her father of a crime he didn’t commit, Barbara initially becomes the Batgirl in homage to Batman.  Only when her father is kidnapped by Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn does Batgirl take her role more seriously, stepping up to become a true superheroine and in the process shifting from hero worship of Batman to seeing him as a friend and ally.
Now while the Joker is included in the cast, this is just for a flashback montage that explains why Harley is coming in as Ivy’s partner-in-crime on her first DCEU film.  Rather than taking her through a relationship with the Joker over a film or two, we just treat it as something that’s happened between The Dark Knight film and this one.  Casting-wise, everyone from Jim Gordon on-down is from past films, leaving just Barbara, her friends and the female antagonists as new selections.  Bella Thorne takes the lead role due to her youth, resemblance to the comics character and good acting ability, while Margot Robbie is one of those bits of real-DCEU casting I agree with enough to retain.  As for taking on April Bowlby as Poison Ivy, I know she’s landed more serious roles since her time on Two-and-a-Half-Men, and I’d be curious to see her take on Poison Ivy as a role.
Teen Titans (2016) Directed by Steven Spielberg
Richard Grayson/Robin = Patrick Schwarzenegger
Koriand'r/Starfire = Elle Fanning
Donna Troy/Wonder Girl = Ciara Bravo
Wallace "Wally" West/Kid Flash = Calum Worthy
Raven = Maisie Williams
Victor Stone/Cyborg = Ashton Sanders
Garfield "Gar" Logan/Beast Boy = Dylan Sprayberry
Roy Harper/Speedy = Cameron Monaghan
Aqualad/Garth = Luke Benward
Trigon = Viggo Mortensen
Psimon = Matthew Grey Gubler
Gizmo = Peter Dinklage
Jinx = Naomi Scott
Mammoth = Adam Joseph Copeland
Shimmer = Anna Faris
Grant Wilson/Ravager = Andrew Garfield
Slade Wilson/Deathstroke = Daniel Day-Lewis
Dr Silas Stone = Rocky Carroll
Bruce Wayne/Batman = Christian Bale
Alfred Pennyworth = Michael Caine
It’s a sad truth in cinema as we know it that the Teen Titans have never had a serious film of them released cinematically.  The only cinema versions to date have been “kiddy-fied” cartoon disasters, and the two serious animated features that have been done have been for direct-to-home-release only.  As such, there was no way I’d conceive a hypothetical live-action DC universe without seeking to address this foolish oversight on the part of DC and WB.  To show just how seriously I take this, I’ve even put the great Steven Spielberg at the helm, because frankly I think it would be good to have someone of that calibre lend their directorial weight to the project.
Plot-wise, you start out with the apprentices of the major heroes meeting each other and trying to team up, but something goes awry, and earns them some condemnation from Batman.  A few months later, the demon Trigon begins trying to invade Earth, and his daughter Raven comes to Earth ahead of him to recruit heroes against the threat.  With Batman taken out early on and the rest of the Justice League engaged, it falls to the Titans from the 1980’s comics run to assemble and meet the threat.  The Fearsome Five are incorporated as pawns of Trigon, while Ravager tries and fails to collect a bounty on the Titans.  His accidental death while pursuing this then leads to a credits scene in which his father Deathstroke takes up the contract, setting up for a somewhat inevitable sequel.
Batman and Alfred are brought in from past films, as are the apprentice heroes and Cyborg’s father.  The rest of the cast is all new to this film.  I won’t go on at length about their respective resumes; suffice it to say that past experience combined with looking like, or having the potential to look like, the relevant roles has led me to each name on this list.
Green Lantern/Green Arrow (2017) Directed by Matt Reeves
Green Lantern/Hal Jordan = Ben Affleck
Oliver Queen/Green Arrow = Ethan Hawke
Dinah Lance/Black Canary = Malin Akerman
Roy Harper/Speedy = Cameron Monaghan
Tobias Whale = Marvin "Krondon" Jones III
Brunno Mannheim = Joe Manganiello
Whisper A'Daire = Emilia Clarke
Kyle Abbot = Ed Skrein
China White = Kelly Hu
One of the major watershed moments in comics history that has yet to see a film adaptation is the arc in the Green Lantern-Green Arrow combined comic of the 1970’s where Green Arrow’s sidekick Speedy turned out to have developed an addiction to drugs.  When considering films for this alternate DCEU, even though I’ve never read the story, I thought some version of it should be done in film.  To that end, we have this concept, which I would have directed by Matt Reeves (haven’t seen his Batman film, but I enjoyed his Planet of the Apes work).  In this film, Roy Harper is recovering from injuries sustained in the early scenes of the Teen Titans film.  When his doctor cuts off his pain killers prematurely, Roy turns to illegal drugs to compensate, then develops an addiction.  The film then showcases Green Arrow mishandling things, Green Lantern not doing a good job himself by taking Ollie off to fight the drug pushers, and Black Canary being the one to do right by Roy, leading to both of them becoming estranged from Green Arrow.
Our heroes and the drug-dealing China White are all brought back from past films, while the rest of the cast list is new.  Mannheim is incorporated to provide links to the world of Superman, while Whisper and Kyle are nods to Ra’s Al Ghul and the League of Shadows.  Tobias Whale, on the other hand, is borrowed from the rogues gallery of Black Lightning, largely in homage to a similar character appearing in a Justice League Unlimited episode that featured Green Arrow and Black Canary.
Shazam vs Black Adam (2017) Directed by David F Sandberg
Billy Batson/Shazam = Zachary Gordon/Zachary Levi
Black Adam/Teth-Adam = Dwayne Johnson
Isis/Adrianna Tomaz = Michelle Rodriguez
Osiris/Amon Tomaz = Miguel Gomez
Freddy Freeman/"Shazam" Freddy = Chandler Riggs/Adam Brody
The Wizard = Forest Whitaker
Darla Dudley/"Shazam" Darla = Quvenzhané Wallis/Meagan Good
Mary Bromfield/Mary Marvel = Halston Sage/Michelle Borth
Eugene Choi/"Shazam" Eugene = Hudson Yang/Ross Butler
Pedro Peña/"Shazam" Pedro = Rico Rodriguez/DJ Cotrona
Rosa Vásquez = Marta Milans
Víctor Vásquez = Cooper Andrews
For Shazam’s second solo outing, I felt like that needed to be something different, and after seeing the less-than-brilliant use of the JSA and the Tomaz family in the Black Adam film, I knew what the different thing had to be.  So, step one, keep Sandberg directing.  Step 2, have Black Adam appear in his fictional nation and free it in brief, then he lets himself be caught invading another country so he could be taken over to the United States, who he learns has been complicit in Kandaq’s problems prior to his liberation of his people.  When Black Adam breaks free, he clashes with the Shazam family and later recruits Kandaqi-American mother-and-son Adrianna and Amon Tomaz.  In this sense, the film is a kind of Shazam-centric variant on the Superman story “what’s so funny about truth, justice and the American way?”
In terms of cast, most of it remains the same as the real DCEU, with a few changes here and there.  Yes, my picks for the Tomaz family are of Latin extraction instead of middle Eastern, but considering Dwayne Johnson is of Black Canadian and Samoan descent, I think it’s hardly vital we get like-for-like in actor nationalities/heritage.  That said, I would be insisting on some dialect coaches so you can be convinced Black Adam is from an ancient middle east nation instead of the USA.
Suicide Squad 2 (2017) Directed by Guillermo del Toro
Amanda Waller = Viola Davis
Rick Flag Jr. = Joel Kinnaman
Floyd Lawton/Deadshot = Christian Slater
Captain Boomerang/Digger Harkness = Hugh Jackman
Killer Frost/Louise Lincoln = Amanda Seyfried
Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger = Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
Sameer Park/Copperhead = Sendhil Ramamurthy
Siobhan Smythe/Silver Banshee = Katie McGrath
Dr Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn = Margot Robbie
Giganta = Hayley Atwell
Enchantress/Dr June Moone = Keira Knightley/Natalie Portman
Slipknot/Christopher Weisz = Adam Beach
Sportsmaster/Victor Gover = Xavier Samuel
Cheshire/Jade Nguyen = Rila Fukushima
Diana/Wonder Woman = Kate Beckinsale
General Harrison Hardcastle = Neal McDonough
Vandal Savage = Gerard Butler
This is our second DCEU film of the phase, and overall, with Guillermo del Toro at the helm.  This time, though, the focus is on villain-team the Suicide Squad.  For the squad’s second outing, they’re caught up in a manhunt, or rather woman-hunt, for Wonder Woman after the events of that hero’s third solo film.  General Hardcastle, having been disgraced in MoS 3 for his attempt to go after Superman, tries to dupe Amanda Waller into having the squad bring in Wonder Woman.  However, little does he or the squad know that immortal Vandal Savage is planning a major coup, and pursuing Wonder Woman could be the very thing that allows him to succeed.
For all intents and purposes, this film is meant to be a kind of warped superhero universe variant on ‘The Fugitive’ with a little James Bond/Raiders of the Lost Ark thrown in on the third act.  There are a few new names in the cast, but most are brought back from prior films.  Among the new names is Katie McGrath, the actress who played Lena Luthor in the Arrow-verse series of Supergirl.  As the actress is apparently Irish, I’ve shifted her into playing Silver Banshee in this film.
Justice League: Darkseid Rising (2018) Directed by Ron Howard
Oliver Queen/Green Arrow = Ethan Hawke
Dinah Lance/Black Canary = Malin Akerman
Barry Allen/The Flash = Matt Damon
Dr Ray Palmer/Atom = Tom Ellis
J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter = Chiwetel Ejiofor
Superman/Kal-El/Clark Kent = Brandon Routh
Carter Hall/Hawkman = Sullivan Stapleton
Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl = Jessica Alba
John Stewart = Derek Luke
Bruce Wayne/Batman = Christian Bale
John Constantine = Matt Ryan
Zatanna = Katrina Law
Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning = Jamie Foxx
Steppenwolf = Ciarán Hinds
Kalibak = Liev Schreiber
Scott Free/Mister Miracle = Charlie Cox
Barda Free/Big Barda = Lindsay Kay Hayward
DeSaad = David Wenham
Darkseid = Bernard Hill
This is our third Justice League film, and having thoroughly shaken up the League and the DC universe over a few years, this instalment creates a bit more chaos.  In this film, Steppenwolf launches an assault on Earth, and in the process the latest iteration of the Justice League ends up scattering.  One group seeks out Batman, and together with additional heroes of his choosing mount a counter-strike.  The other group ends up meeting heroes from New Genesis and learning that Steppenwolf is only the tip of the sword.  This sets up a major multi-film story arc that runs for most of the remaining phases of this DCEU.
In terms of direction, I’ve already used Ron Howard in this hypothetical film run on Man of Steel 2, and I think this would be an interesting project for him to helm.  Everyone from Steppenwolf on-down in the film casting is new to this film; Ciarán Hinds is retained from the real DCEU as I think he was let down by that Justice League film and not the film by him.  As for the selection of Lindsay Kay Hayward, that was based on a search for a truly tall actress to play Big Barda without necessarily having to revert to effects or trick camera shots.  As for Bernard Hill, who better than Theoden of Rohan from LOTR to be playing an alien monarch like Darkseid?
Aquaman 3 (2018) Directed by James Wan
Arthur Curry/Aquaman = Chris Pine
Mera = Felicity Jones
Vulko = Jonathan Frakes
Black Manta = Idris Elba
Tempest/Garth = Luke Benward
Jackson Hyde/Aqualad II = Caleb McLaughlin
Tula/Aquagirl = Lily-Rose Depp
Siren/Hila = Felicity Jones
Nanaue/King Shark = Sylvester Stalone
King Ryus = Dolph Lundgren
Capt. Leron = Matt Smith
Nereus = Domnhall Gleeson
Gamemnae = Laura Haddock
For our third Aquaman solo outing, the directorial reigns shift from Vulko actor and Trek alumni Jonathan Frakes to James Wan, director of the real DCEU’s Aquaman film.  The plot is a loose translation of the Obsidian Age arc from the Justice League comics, with the ancient Atlantean sorceress Gamemnae appearing as a present-day foe and opposed by the full aqua-family, including a second Aqualad and introducing Aquagirl.  Casting-wise, it’s mostly people I already chose for the past Aquaman instalments mixed with real DCEU casting and a few new ones.  Also, while I chose each cast member for good reasons that trump all else, I can’t deny the slight misfortune in selecting someone with the surname Haddock for a film whose characters are all somehow aquatic in nature.
Doom Patrol (2018) Directed by James Gunn
Dr Niles Caulder/The Chief = Pierce Brosnan
Clifford Steele/Robot Man = Johnny Whitworth
Larry Trainor/Negative Man = Alessandro Nivola
Rita Farr/Elasti-Girl = Alyssa Milano
Mento/Steve Dayton = Nathan Fillion
Bumblebee/Karen Beecher = Kyla Pratt
Vox/Malcom Duncan = Donald Glover
The Brain = Jean Reno
Monsieur Mallah = Omar Sy
Laura De Mille/Madame Rouge = Sophie Marceau
Emil LaSalle/Warp = Jean Dujardin
Otto Von Furth/Plasmus = Til Schweiger
When it comes to films about misfit adventurers in a world of super-beings, James Gunn pulls them off better than most at times, so I thought it’d be interesting to see him tackle the Doom Patrol in film format.  This film is very much a one-off and does a run-through on their origins while pitting them against their arch-nemeses the Brotherhood of Evil.  With the antagonists being mostly French with a single German member in the comics, this was an interesting one to cast outside of the hero team.  Mind you, casting for a brain in a robot body and a man wrapped in bandages is also fun because appearance is less crucial.  However, I think the end result is pretty good.
So, that’s the full run-through on phase 3 of my Batman Begins-led DCEU.  Hopefully, I won’t come back to this or my 90’s MCU until the new year, and I’ll have some more varied topics to discuss in the last few months of 2023.  As to whether those hopes are justified, we’ll have to wait until October to see.  Until then, ta-ta for now.

The thing about suicide is that you never really understand why.
Whether someone close to you commits or you do it yourself,you will find yourself never truly understanding why,no matter how clear the person explains the reasons and no matter how hard they try showing you why,you'll always have a void spot concerning the answer.
Why?
Maybe because I was too sad and my weights suddenly went heavy and brought me down,maybe I couldn't bare all the suffering with hot blood til it ran cold and couldn't keep me alive for long,maybe I was way too patient with everything and everyone and forgot how my heart had limits I should've considered before it ripped apart...or maybe I was just a person,who wasn't designated to live or survive,a person who wasn't made for a life,yet for a 6feet under spot deep in mother Earth's womb,ready to be reborn as someone's worth living...but does that give me the choice to gutter myself or maybe slit my wrists? Hang myself in a memorial tree? Jump from a specific height? Overdose on various drugs and meds or maybe even slash my whole trachea open and swim on my guiltless puddle of spoiled blood boiling from hatred towards a merciless world...?
Why would a beautiful human with a radiant soul want to do that to themselves...
17/04/2013 two of your cousins poisoned themselves and died within the next few hours horribly with long lasting damage to a whole family,which led to an international concern raising on news and socials.Everybody knew,nobody understood why.
_/_/2015 you overdosed on several drugs mixed all at once,made you feel so high yet suddenly so low for a whole week,asleep,with no movement and none to wonder why.
_/_/2016 ...
_/_/2018 ...
_/_/2019 ...
16/06/2021 you tried to kill yourself,slashed your wrists open,and nobody asked why. Nobody checked nobody rushed to you nobody gave a single thaught about you while you were sitting on the corner of the hospital room wondering whether you should loosen up the syringe hook to lose blood and die or just go to sleep and brush off your brain monsters...nobody asked why,not even you.
23/05/2022 you hung yourself in that abandoned forest at midnight hoping it to be the end of you only for the ropes to cut loose and rip right above your supposed to be one last midnight moon,only for others to ignore the bruises on your neck,only for poeple to give you funny looks,only for yourself to wait for someone to ask "why?" So you can feel a little less heavy...But nobody asked why.
_/_/2023 Is someone going to ask why? If so,will they understand? Will they accept it? Will they move on and live normally? Will they suffer? Forget? Cry? Laugh? Carry on? Move forward?...
I hope I don't figure out why,because if I ever do,I would be most sorry for all of you except me and the long awaited answer of,"why".

Spoilers ahead. See under the cut for a (very) in-depth discussion of the text!
There are some stories you pick up, knowing you'll be torn asunder by the end. This raw and meaningful novel is on that list. Offering a Bouquet of Bellflowers to the Ghost of a Drowned Man is one of the most thorough and accurate depictions of depression and suicide that I read to date, an impressive feat for only 35 chapters.
I rarely read written works with sections like this, but I liked how fragmented and refreshing it felt. The frequent breaks act as speed bumps for the reader to proceed at an appropriate pace. Without this structure, I would’ve breezed through the story as I tend to do. This short novel has much to say, so please take your time!
The honest weight of the text is equally devastating as it is comforting. Although depression is widespread, there are endless misconceptions about it. Depression is indiscriminate, affecting anyone regardless of age, class, gender, etc. Even if someone appears fine, can create art that inspires others, or is successful and wealthy, their condition should be taken seriously. Just because it’s a common, treatable disorder doesn’t mean it’s less destructive or life-threatening than other health issues.
The story acknowledges that depression manifests differently for everyone and highlights some “socially unacceptable” symptoms. Dropping out of school, harboring “unproductive” interests, damaging relationships, forgetting to eat, not cleaning your own space, and struggling with basic hygiene are not the result of laziness or intentional neglect. This is a disorder for a reason. It’s debilitating. And it can reach a severity where someone ends their own life.
Society insists that suicide is “selfish” and “cowardly.” I love how Bellflowers fights the stigma by treating this subject with tenderness and complexity. Suicide is a tragedy, as all deaths are. It shouldn't be a damning crime. Regardless of personal opinion, holding compassion toward those who passed is crucial. They deserve to be treated with warmth, understanding, and dignity—even in death—rather than scorn and shame.
A pang of guilt accompanies the grief after a loved one dies by suicide. Such a loss may trigger suicidal thoughts, completely numb the pain, or remain dormant in an emotional vacuum until much later. Yet the questions of “What more could I have done? What could I have done better to prevent this?” haunt everyone the same.
Living with the gut-wrenching remorse may be inevitable, but self-forgiveness prevents it from paralyzing you into hopelessness. The forest ranger walked a path that would only lead his grief and guilt to snowball out of control, but after meeting Wang Ze, his mindset shifts to uplifting others where and when he can. The harshest truth is that there’s only so much you can do. The line between stopping someone from dying and finding a reason to live can actually be a wide gap. The forest ranger's growth in this regard touched me deeply because this is not implying that a person isn’t worth saving after a certain point. Sometimes we did the best we could at the time. Sometimes it wasn't enough. I admired his declaration that even if he couldn't do more, that would be ok too. Acknowledging this without letting it consume you whole is the real challenge.
One person may not be able to save everyone, but it’s possible to help someone remain afloat. Love goes so, so far. It can’t magically “fix” the broken pieces. It certainly won’t “cure” depression and suicidal ideation. Still, genuine human connection eases the pain of living. A support system can convince someone that waking up to another day is possible because there’s a salvation in knowing someone and letting yourself be known. As Tim Kreider puts it in “I Know What You Think of Me,” “if we want the rewards of being loved we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known.”
Being so vulnerable is terrifying, especially for those with dark traumas who are used to hiding behind a façade for self-protection. My heart was in tatters seeing the writer, who desperately wanted to be loved for who he was, attempt to make himself visible. The original draft of his final novel was an effort to bare his soul and a silent plea for acceptance. That desire to share your truth paired with the overwhelming fear that a trusted person will turn you away reminded me of the following lines from “The Torn-Up Road” (2000) by Richard Siken:
I want to tell you this story without having to confess anything, without having to say that I ran out into the street to prove something, that he didn't love me, that I wanted to be possessed, thrown over, that I wanted to have the wounds nailed shut.
Hesitant to directly reveal his past, the writer puts it in novel form along with the hope that his editor will say this life can still have a happy ending. An uneasy rejection sends the writer over the edge, and we never learn his name. Till the end, no one truly knew him.
In contrast, Wang Ze and the forest ranger reveal the ugliest parts of themselves and grow closer. As they see the other’s strengths and gentle heart, I couldn’t help but think, “What a relief it would be if you saw yourself through the eyes of a person who understood you.” Even for a split second, you can wonder, “Maybe I’m not as terrible as I thought.” Loving yourself and believing you have a future worth seeing aren't affirmations that can be internalized overnight. But if someone is by your side, loving even “this” version of you… perhaps everything isn’t as daunting.
Part of the novel’s charm is that 江流 doesn’t try to solve questions that carry too much nuance to have an answer or make uncertain promises. These snippets from “I am not always very attached to being alive” by Anna Borges put it better than I can:
But speaking freely need not solely carry the weight of prevention. It can simply be about the comfort of social connectedness and knowing you’re not alone. Like Beeson told me, the big picture is not as much about preventing suicide as it is about planning life and fostering social connectedness — which, in and of themselves, are major preventative factors.
Perhaps what I’m looking for isn’t land at all, but other people out here with me. Trying, and treading, and learning to live in the water.
We simply sit with a gentle reminder of some axioms: Living is hard, but you are important. Your struggles and pain are valid. You are worthy of love and acceptance. You are not alone. It is so good to have you here. I hope you continue to stay.

Monday, June 12th: Sitting Wishing Waiting
Haven’t heard back from Nowadays, I’m worried Ryan and Matt are both off making new Hinge matches, and even Buffalo Exchange doesn’t want my old clothing (still donated, but ouch?).
How do I focus on the good? My meditation today was about persistence, boy howdy is it frustrating to persist with no give. To put in effort and get nothing back except for interviews and dates (which is just interviews with drinks). Maybe I’m the only one who will ever commit to me. Maybe I can go live in some forest like Henry David Thoreau and masturbate write all day.
Yoga was 14 minuets of awkward movement and feeling slight pain. Mostly I just noticed how dirty some parts of my floor are, so after I unloaded the dishwasher, I ran a towel with some bleach under my nightstand. I also replaced the water jug in the front room while Lumos glared hatefully at me from his perch. Ugh. That does count as 1% improvement though.
As does my run this morning, about half a mile and then three miles of walking and letting Dua Lipa’s sexy voice propel me forward. I drank a green smoothie from Trader Joe’s instead of my usual coffee, but followed it up with a hot pocket when I got home. Put in the air fryer though so balance?
I feel energetic, both restless and hopeful. Bouncy hair, white teeth. Swiping through Hinge just in case boy number 578 is a keeper. Easy applying through Linkedin in case getting to the last round of interviews (as usual) leads to another form of ghosting.
It’s unlikely that I will never get a new job or fall in love again, but as I sat in the thrift shop today with a laundry basket of my old clothes on my thighs, working through a Friday New York Times Crossword, I kept feeling like I wanted to throw myself in to the discount bin. Just cover me in old ironic T-shirts and faded rave gear and ship us off to 2019 when we were shiny, new, and relevant.
Current Book: Half-way through The Midnight Library. The gist is that no matter what life you live, you’ll still probably be on anti-depressants. Oddly comforting. Or not considering the main character is suicidal. Anyways “What-ifs” are bullshit. Don’t kill yourself.
Something to look forward to: Pedicures with Lauren tomorrow.
Something to be proud of: Not quitting. Looking good. Donating clothing instead of getting high.
