Which Of Your Fics...

Did you think would get a bigger reaction/audience than it got: HONESTLY I was expecting “Hit And Run” to get more hits. It got way more genuine love in the comments than I ever expected from the people who did read it (including so many writers I admire *swoon*) so who cares, truly! I just forget how few people actually ship zutaraang.

Is your funniest: i actually think my korrasami WIP is very funny but that’s because i think Korra has a good sense of humor and her banter with Bolin is like the first half of the fic lmao. Out of my published stuff I would say “Better Left Unsaid” is more consistently funny throughout, but i did actually laugh out loud writing “Hit And Run” because of the ending!

Is your darkest/angstiest: none of my published/complete work because it’s not quite my style, but I have a Rangshi WIP that will be posted soon that is quite angsty and depressing feat. What if Rangi and Kyoshi didn’t get together and Rangi fucked with Kyoshi’s emotions because of her internalized homophobia ???? why am i writing it? Good question.

Is your absolute favorite: i love all my children equally i refuse to answer this (i actually just can’t decide)

Is your least favorite: mmm probably my most recent one “watch it spin”, which is actually not ATLA but a SPOP fic focused on Catra and Perfuma becoming friends (a big hc of mine) and getting high together (based off some funny fan art). I only say it’s my least fave because it’s not my best work, but it is very niche and self-indulgent and I’m glad it’s in the universe for my own sake!

Was the easiest to write: “Better Left Unsaid”! That one only took a couple of hours. Started as just a warm up for something else and then I was like ‘oh this is cute’ :)

Was the hardest to write: “Wanna Follow Your Voice...”! It was the first fic I had written in YEARS, first for ATLA, and I had never done anything with chapters before. I spent a lot of time on it! Just figuring out the pacing and the events I wanted to include and trying to maintain a consistent tone over time was not easy.

Has your favorite line/exchange/paragraph (share it): gosh this is so hard!!!! I have favorites from all of them. I really was proud of how in “Wanna Follow Your Voice” zuko connects flashes from his dreams to his actual interactions with Aang (too much to share here). But have this bit from “Hit And Run” because it’s peak romcom imo —

Before even Aang can react, heat bursts from Zuko’s finger tips, lighting the poor, unassuming bartender’s beard on fire.

“Shit,” Zuko mutters, and jumps up. The bartender is screaming now, haplessly batting at his own chest to try and stop the flames from spreading.

Katara reacts in time with Zuko, pulling him towards the door while the other customers around him clamor to help the bartender, Rin and Aang included.

Zuko takes the opportunity to grab Aang’s wrist, dragging him away from the scene.

Luckily, no one realized where the flame came from, so their timely exit goes unnoticed. By the time Rin stops and looks for ‘Lee’, they’re already out the door and scaling the building next door to get out of sight.

When they reach the rooftop, they all collapse on their backs and catch their breath. Aang pulls off his bandana and wipes it across his brow.

“Well that’s one way to claim your territory,” Aang grinned. The three of them burst out laughing simultaneously.

When their laughter settles, Katara shoves Aang’s shoulder.

“Hey, you’re a little too good at charming the pants off of our enemies. Tone it down a notch next time.”

“I can’t help that the people love me.” He throws his hands up in resignation, drawing out another laugh from Zuko and Katara.

“I have to say Zuko,” Aang starts as he sits up, leaning back on his hands. “You must really love me if you’re willing to set someone on fire out of jealousy.”

Zuko covers his face with his hands, and an embarrassed groan pushes past his lips before he can stop it. “I didn’t mean to set anyone on fire!” he exclaims.

Have you reread the most: “hit and run” but only because people left the most kind and detailed comments about stuff that I genuinely forgot I put in there so I would go back to refresh my own memory LOL

Would you recommend to someone reading your work for the first time: “Better Left Unsaid”, most likely. It’s short and simple, lighthearted, not too shippy, but still captures my writing style well I think.

Are you most proud of: mmmm “Hit And Run” because I really like the way it turned out. It required the most ‘world building’ (so to speak) which is really not something I feel confident doing, but I think I did well with it! Plus it has an OC who I actually loved creating and would totally write about again.

Okay now that I know I won’t be clogging people’s dashes buckle the fuck in my dude and I should stress that I literally would not be talking about this as much as I will be if I didn’t genuinely enjoy the show. I’m gonna go season by season and just Rant

S1 has the serpentine as the bbeg and like, as far as villains go they’re p lit. They’re early enough that they haven’t been done to hell, things are fresh, the characters and dynamics are being fleshed out, and all in all s1 is a pretty solid season. There’s some fuckery that gets brought up re: how the FUCK aging works and what the actual timeline of Ninjago is and how Wu and Garmadon fit into that timeline, fuckery that LITERALLY NEVER GETS RESOLVED IN A SATISFYING WAY BC ITS REVEALED IN A LATER SEASON (s8, dw we’ll get there lmao) THAT THE ONLY REASON THE FIRST SPINJITSU MASTER, WU, AND GARMADON LIVED AS LONG AS THEY DID IS CUZ THEYRE BASICALLY DEMIGODS AND ITS IMPLIED THAT LLOYD WILL ALSO LIVE FOR A LONG ASS TIME WHICH MEANS ONE DAY HES GONNA OUTLIVE ALL HIS FRIENDS AND EVERYONE HE EVER LOVED WHICH IS A FUN THING TO THINK ABOUT AT NIGHT But anyway I digress, s1 also coincidentally introduces Lloyd (he wasn’t in the pilot episodes that set up the rest of the series) and the existence of Evil Dad Garmadon.

S2 is where Garmadon starts acting a lot more Evil and a lot less Dad. He’s the main antagonist for that season, and I actually read somewhere that the show was originally slated to end after s2 which high key explains the fuckery of literally every single season after this lmaooooo. Much like s1, I really can’t find much to complain about, the first two seasons are pretty decent as far as I can remember

Season. Fucking. Three. Where the fuck do I start??? I hate season three for entirely personal reasons revolving around the STUPID GODDAMN ROMANCE WRITING. okay lemme back up and explain a thing first so, Jay is dating Nya and they’re fine, they’re going steady, aND THEN????? THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON INTRODUCES BULLSHIT LOVE TRIANGLE FUCKERY FOR ZERO GODDAMN REASON, BITCH I HATE LOVE TRIANGLES AND I HATE THEM EVEN MORE WHEN THEYRE DONE FOR NO GODDAMN REASON!!! AND THEN. AS IF THAT WERENT ENOUGH. THEY SHOEHORNED A ROBOT ROMANCE BETWEEN ZANE AND PIXAL AND I KNOW I RANTED ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT WHEN I WAS ACTUALLY WATCHING BUT I DIDNT GO INTO ENOUGH DETAIL!!!! THEY MADE THE OTHER NINJA OOC IN ORDER TO PROP UP THEIR SHIP!!!!!! AND AT ONE POINT ZANE GOES “its like we were…made for each other” AND I HAD TO FUCUCJDHVE I HAD TO SCREAM INTO A PILLOW BRO, IM SO TIRED!!!! NO THE FUCK YOU WERENT!!!!!! YOU WERE MADE FOR YOU AND PIXAL WAS MADE FOR PIXAL AND IF YALLS WANNA BANG BOLTS THATS FINE BUT DONT IMPLY THAT EITHER OF YOU WERE MADE INCOMPLETE!!!! THATS AN INSULT TO YOUR MAKERS AND YOURSELVES, MOVE ON, PLEASE AND THANK YOU. anyway that season also killed Zane (for the first time, but not the last) (spoiler alert lmao) and like, not to be an emotional little shit but I did cry a bit at his funeral.

S4 is honestly one of my favorites, even though the romance crimes continue (the love triangle bullshit is continuing and honestly I maintain that Cole, Nya, and Jay should all have gotten together and in my personal canon they DID, and also Kai has a forced romance) the VILLAIN makes up for it imo. He’s campy!! He’s funny!! He’s a clown!! He’s serious enough that if he says “I’m gonna kill you” HE MEANS IT and that’s so fucking refreshing!!!! S4 is honestly 8/10 just for the villain alone, don’t like that it retconned the SHIT out of the elemental masters and how many different elements there are TO master but eh, it’s ninjago, shit is stupid.

S5 was…interesting? OH WAIT I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT S3 INTRODUCED A GARMADON WHO WAS A LOT LESS EVIL AND A LOT MORE DAD, HONESTLY I THOUGHT IT TOOK A LOT OF THE FLAVOR OUT BUT THATS JUST ME LMAOOO. anyway s5 killed Garmadon, and I was a little sad cuz I like him okay??? I just think he’s NEAT, he’s got big dad energy, he was teaching Lloyd some shit that just got DROPPED and literally was never brought up again which is honestly a theme in Ninjago. Ninjago drinking game: take a shot every time they introduce a plot point or ability and drop it at or before the end of the season. WHICH THEY ALSO DID IN S5 WITH A DIFFERENT POWER ACTUALLY, so all the ninja are masters of Spinjitsu right, well s5 introduced the concept of Airjitsu which only Spinjitsu masters can learn and it lets them FLY and they used that for seasons 5 and 6 and then they nEVER BROUGHT IT UP AGAIN EVEN THOUGH IT WOULDVE COME IN HANDY FOR S E V E R A L DIFFERENT SITUATIONS ACROSS THE SEASONS, ONE OF THEM WOULD BE FALLING TO THEIR DOOM AND MY ASS WOULD BE YELLING “YOU CAN FLY, DUMBASS” - anyway, they do that again later lmao it’s fine. But what’s low key NOT fine is they made Nya the WATER NINJA!!! Like I’m not mad she has powers, except I kinda am, she was doing just fine as Samurai X and honestly the only reason she has super special ninja powers is for plot reasons. Also Cole got turned into a ghost, but by s7 he’s????? No longer a ghost????????? And that’s NEVER addressed or reasoned away, so like. Cool lmao

S6 didn’t happen. Like, canonically, s6 ends with wish fuckery that undoes the entire season and none of the characters remember anything that happened except Jay and Nya because S6 is the season where they get back together so they remember all those events for???? Feelings reasons?????? Unclear, moving on. The actual bbeg for S6 was a djinn with a vaguely Spanish accent, and to this DAY I don’t know why they made him have a SPANISH accent. Djinn are Arabic, not Spanish!! They’re not central or South American, either!!!! Your villain design makes no sense, do better

S7 had MORE time fuckery, and retconned what happened to Kai and Nya’s parents and hmmmhmhmhmhmhm that makes me Upsetti Spaghetti :3 not just the retconning, but the fact that they LITERALLY brought them back oNLY TO NEVER MENTION THEM AGAIN!!!!!! LITERALLY!!!!!!!! Okay so at the VERY very beginning, like pilot episodes beginning, Kai talks about their dad like he died/left fairly recently, BUT s7 contradicts that and claims that both of their parents were essentially abducted when Kai and Nya were little kids, which makes me question what in the fresh fuck two little kids were doing for all those years alone. SETTING THAT ASIDE FOR A HOT SECOND, their parents were also apparently good friends of Wu’s and old war buddies (from the Serpentine wars, which is YET ANOTHER bit of the timeline that doesn’t quite add up but honestly I could make a whole other post about that shit). But if they were such good fucking friends, why didn’t Wu check in every now and again??? What the fuck was Wu doing that was so fucking important that he couldn’t have been assed to visit his friends ONCE in like TEN MOTHERFUCKING YEARS and realize “oh shit, they’re not here and there are two tiny children running around unsupervised…My Kids Now : )” LIKE????? WU YOU LOW KEY SHOULDA LOOKED OUT FOR YOUR FRIENDS’ KIDS BETTER, THEY COULDA DIED BRO!!! Uhhhh the time fuckery also results in Wu getting yeeted ahead in time a bit and the ninja gotta find him

Season. Eight. I have…mixed feelings about this one. The beginning absolutely SLAUGHTERED me, and not in a “this is so fucking funny” way. No, the beginning made me feel like I was being flayed alive with just about every episode because Ninjago was back on its forced romance bullshit and this time it was Lloyd’s turn on the chopping block. That hurt my soul cuz like, look at that mans color scheme, he’s CLEARLY alloaro, why are you forcing romance on my aro man, why would you hurt me like that, BUT ALSO BECAUSE HE AND THE GIRL HE WAS BEING SET UP WITH HAD A LITTLE HEART TO HEART REALLY EARLY ON AND IT WAS THE MOST QUEER CODED SHIT!!!! IT DEADASS READ AS A CONVERSATION BETWEEN AN OUT AND PROUD QUEER AND A CLOSETED QUEER AND THEY MADE!!! IT!!!!! STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing that kept me watching at first was wanting to find Wu, and then I started enjoying myself once Cole found a plot-relevant baby and had fatherhood thrust upon him. Everything went from “ehhhhh” to “holy shit this FUCKS” once it was revealed that Rumi (Lloyd’s love interest) wAS PLAYING HIM THE WHOLE TIME AND WAS EVIL AND HAD AN EVIL GIRLFRIEND!!!!!! LITERALLY IMPROVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THE SEASON FOR ME, I COULD EVEN FORGIVE THE WHOLE “let’s resurrect Garmadon, but as evil as possible” BULLSHIT!!!!!!

S9 is a continuation of s8, Garmadon is back and 1000% Evil, 10% Dad, but none of the Dad energies is directed at Lloyd - it’s all directed at Rumi, and honestly I could write a whole ass post on just RUMI cuz that’s honestly my DAUGHTER and I LOVE HER and I’m MAD SHE DIES AT THE END OF THIS SEASON!!!! SHE DESERVED THERAPY AND TO LIVE WITH HER GF AND MAYBE SOME CRIME. AS A TREAT. RUMI DESERVED BETTER AND LOW KEY IM GONNA WRITE A FIC ABOUT IT, BUT ANYWAY WHERE WAS I

Ah right, so s9 has the four major Ninja stuck in the original dimension with no way home, while Lloyd has no powers (cuz he almost died last season) and has to somehow lead a resistance against Garmadon (who has taken control of Ninjago City and is working on the rest of Ninjago). Actually, s9 is pretty cool. Like, the end of s8 and into s9 are low key my favorite episodes, and I kinda wanna rewatch them now -

S10 is a FUN one. Garmadon got got last season, but he didn’t DIE, so he’s in cold storage and now there’s Another Threat and he’s the only one who knows wtf they’re up against so they let him out and he works with them. The funny part is, he is still Very Much Evil and doesn’t quite Get emotions like he did when he was, uh, human lmao, sO HE WOKE UP EVERY DAY DURING THAT SEASON AND DECIDED TO CAUSE PROBLEMS ON PURPOSE. IT WAS THE FUNNIEST FUCKING SHIT. 1000000/10 MY FAVORITE GARMADON, he ended that season by literally fucking off into Ninjago and they never decided to track him down 😭😭😭😭😭and I’m so SAD about it dude

S11 has another Serpentine as the bbeg, though in the setup to that they retconned how the fucking Serpentine tribes and history work??? I think???? Also Wu was a good 150% angrier and generally Done with the ninja’s shit, which was honestly refreshing tho I’m not quite sure I liked what the refreshed view was, but whatever lmao. S11 also had the ninja get yeeted to the dimension farthest from Ninjago, and honestly - okay, so they didn’t all go at the same TIME, Zane left about a week or two before the others did but there was time dilation fuckery afoot which I’m not too mad about cuz low key it makes sense. What I AM mad about is that they didn’t play the angst up to its full POTENTIAL!!!!!! Zane was EVIL in the other dimension!!!! Okay so I’m Ninjago he was only gone for maybe a week or two, but DECADES had passed in the other one, and all that time Zane was alone and disconnected from everyone he knew and loved, with a staff that boosted his power while slowly corrupting him and Turning Him Evil to help him, and like???? The thought of Zane trying to find a way home, trying to get SOME sort of message back, while he has to use the staff more and more to help him survive the long, lonely decades, so that by the time his family DOES show up its too late??? BRO. B R O. THAT JUST HITS DIFFERENT, BUT NINJAGO DIDNT DO THAT!!! THEY MADE HIM EVIL DUE TO MEMORY WIPE!!!!!! MEMORY WIPE IS BABY SHIT COMPARED TO A LONG, SLOW CORRUPTION!!!!!!

S12 was alright. It went into Cole’s mom, touched on some of the adventures she had had, threatened another forced romance (this time on poor Cole, just leave my mans ALONE) but thankfully didn’t follow through this time, introduced cool new powers that honestly hasn’t been elaborated on since that’s the most recent season I think lmao

Fridgewheatfield 2019 GOTY Awards

Normally I would go through the TGA nominations and give my thoughts on who the winner of each was for me. But 2019 kinda sucked for games imo, and I didn’t play very many. So instead, I want to highlight 5 games I really loved this year and give them each their own award. So here they are:

Best AAA Game: God of War (2018)

This game really took me by surprise. I got it in the Summer for 50% off and hoped it would scratch an itch that I knew a 3rd BOTW playthrough wouldn’t quite scratch. I didn’t expect much from it except for maybe some fun gameplay, since I had never played another game in the series, but it won a lot of GOTY awards in 2018, so I figured it was worth a try for the discount.

This game floored me. I was enamored from start to finish. The environments, the story, the characters, and especially the gameplay had me glued to this game for 10 hours a day for almost a week. I have never felt such guilt from shafting irl responsibilities in order to play a game. The graphics are among the best of this generation. The world building and main quest line kept me interested and actually listening the entire time. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus was strangely relatable, but never had me siding with one character over the other for too long. And the combat is probably the most immersive, diverse, and fast-paced of any game I’ve played. I fought thousands of enemies and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were only a few enemies that I actually killed in the exact same ways. This game was a huge pleasant surprise for me, and the ending pushed its hypothetical sequel near the top of my list of most anticipated games. 10/10

Most Satisfying: A Hat in Time

A Hat in Time finally came to Switch this year after what felt like an eternity. I was waiting for this game to come to Nintendo since the Kickstarter was announced. Before we knew about Mario Odyssey or Yooka-Laylee, it was refreshing to see that anybody still had interest in reviving the genre of game I loved most as a kid.

This game is EXACTLY what I wanted it to be: A love letter to every Gamecube game I played ad nauseum. A Hat in Time masterfully blends the freeform movement of Mario Sunshine, an art style inspired by Wind Waker, and the charming dialogue of Thousand Year Door to create a game that starts at a 10 and never lets you down. There must have been 20 times during this game where I said to myself, “I hope this game [does this],” and the game followed through with shocking consistency. With customization, easter eggs, references, and humor stuffed into every mission, this game reminded me of everything I loved about the games I grew up with. But this game isn’t just bells and whistles, it also features some of the most engaging level design of any 3D platformer I’ve played. A train murder mystery, a free-roam around a cruise ship paradise run by uwu-speaking seals, and genuinely one of the scariest segments in any game I’ve played were some of the highlights. But none of this game’s 30+ main missions ever disappointed. While the graphical quality and technical performance were less than stellar, everything that the game WANTED to be more than made this game an easy 9/10.

Funniest Game: Untitled Goose Game

I never understood all the buzz about this game leading up to its release. You’re just a goose? What do you even do?

I was skeptical, but this game did not let me down. There was something strangely hilarious about stealing everyone’s stuff and annoying them for no reason other than to cross off a to-do list. Maybe it was imagining the humans’ perspective. Maybe it was the spastic piano score that only played when you did anything. But whatever it was, this game had me cracking up for its entire 2 hour duration. You can’t deny that the price is a bit steep for such a small game, but the amount of enjoyment I got from an afternoon with this game left me satisfied with my purchase. And with fun secret challenges to discover along the way and to struggle with after the credits, leaving me saying “Ohhh I didn’t think to do that!”, Goose Game is just enough of a game to justify everything that it has going on. 9/10

Most Fun Bad Game: Animal Crossing Pocket Camp

The OG followers will remember when this was a New Leaf blog, and you best believe it will be a New Horizons blog when the time comes. I hated this game when it came out in 2017. I thought it was a boring, empty waste of time that did nothing for fans of the series. But after numerous updates and quality of life changes that I totally missed the boat on, Pocket Camp actually became worth spending time on. I jumped back into this game following the post-E3 hype for New Horizons, and I’ve logged in every day since.

I won’t mince words, this game is bad. It’s nefarious, predatory mobile game practices at its most kawaii. But damn if I don’t love these new furniture sets they introduce every few weeks. I love piecing together the new items I get from each set or event to make a camp that I’d enjoy spending time in. I’ve spent more money than I care to admit on Pocket Camp’s take on loot boxes (not bank-breaking, but more than I’m proud of). But I honestly can’t say I regret any microtransaction I’ve made. I’ve had a lot of fun with this game in the past few months, and getting everyone I know back into it alongside me made it even better, just like previous Animal Crossing games. The crux of the enjoyment is still sharing your designs and collections with your friends, just like always. And that was Animal Crossing enough for me. Not giving this one a score because its still a scummy mobile game, but if you haven’t played this game since launch, redownload it and give it a look-through.

Best Game I Played in 2019: Banjo-Kazooie

Everyone knows how good this game is. I played it as a kid, and I’ve known my entire life that this game is great. I’ve reminisced with friends about this game, I’ve watched countless Let’s Plays, and I’ve sung its praises as the best 3D platformer there is.

But I hadn’t ever actually beaten it until this past Summer.

And it turns out that I didn’t even know how right I was all these years. Banjo-Kazooie is a perfect game. Every level is meticulously crafted to be unique, interesting, and just big enough to where they’re fun to explore, but small enough to where there is no empty space. Banjo (and especially Kazooie) control like a dream. The dialogue is the textbook example of charming video game dialogue. And the game is just long enough to feel full, but it never overstays its welcome by retreading old ground for the sake of making the game longer. And don’t even get me started on the soundtrack. There’s a reason Grant Kirkhope left the 2000s as the only household name that came out of Rare. This game could not be improved, and its stood the test of time against the other greats of the genre like Mario 64, A Hat in Time (imo), and Mario Odyssey, to maintain its spot as the game that every 3D platformer wants to be. It’s the best game of the genre, the best game I played this year, and it’s now among my top 5 favorite games of all time. An obvious 10/10.

Hi! Sorry to bother you, but I saw there's an entire section dedicated to the SW novels on your page, so I figured you are the best person to ask this to. While I've watched the movies I must admit I'm a newbie in regards to any work that expands the canon universe, but I'm particulary interested in the prequels and especially in learning more on Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship, so I was wondering if you might be so kind as to give me a few suggestions on which novels I should read? :)

Hello! That’s absolutely not a bother, I clearly love talking and I enjoy doing recs for things as well! :D Keep in mind that I haven’t read everything, so I may be missing some things, but I can absolutely at least get you started!Canon hasn’t explored Obi-Wan & Anakin much in the novels yet (though, I think we’re starting to explore that area), but if you’re okay with reading comics, the Obi-Wan & Anakin five issue mini-series and Age of Republic comics (or at least the Obi-Wan one and the Anakin one) are both really fantastic for exploring them.I would also suggest the Dark Lord of the Sith comic from Charles Soule, which is set post-Revenge of the Sith, it’s about Vader, but he is still very much Anakin Skywalker and it’s a 25-issue long look at his shitty choices, his attempt to deny that he had other paths he could have chosen, and still chose this, that he was too afraid to look at what he’d actually done, so he just keeps going. (The first Darth Vader comic by Kieron Gillen is also really good, probably one of the best of all the comics, but it’s more centered on the OT and the events that happen there. Still a fantastic look at his character, but if you’re more into the prequels, Dark Lord of the Sith is more focused on that.)Canon also has Choose Your Destiny - An Obi-Wan & Anakin Adventure by Cavan Scott, which I’m not fond of the CYA style, but I loved that book very much, it’s such a delight and has Anakin being an absolute human disaster, it has Obi-Wan and Anakin struggling to learn to work together, and, best of all, because Palpatine isn’t around at the moment, they actually have a chance at working things out between them here!In the anthology novel From a Certain Point of View, you should at least read Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray, Time of Death by Cavan Scott, and There Is Another by Gary D. Schmidt, which all are really good for those characters, and Obi-Wan and Anakin especially. The rest of the book can be hit or miss (and that’ll depend on who you ask, but I think An Incident Report by Daniel Mallory Ortberg is also a must-read, it is the funniest thing pretty much ever) but those three are really worth reading.The Ahsoka novel is definitely about the titular character making her way through the galaxy during the time of the Empire, but there are some QUALITY flashbacks and thoughts about Obi-Wan and Anakin, so I would absolutely recommend this one, too! Same for Dark Disciple by Christie Golden, it’s not really precisely about Obi-Wan and Anakin, but they get moments in it, and it’s a continuation of TCW and adapting a story that was going to be part of the show.For Legends, I like Wild Space a ton, it’s not quite a coherent plot (it’s more like two books stitched together and it doesn’t really earn its ending, imo) it’s the single most quotable book I have ever read and I love it because it’s so over the top while still remaining fun. It’s HIGH FUCKING DRAMA, everyone is dialing it up to like a hundred, Obi-Wan and Anakin can’t go five damn pages without thinking of the other, even when Anakin should be thinking about Padme or Obi-Wan should be focusing on getting out of a jam. It’s just an absolute scream. I haven’t read Miller’s other two books, but they’re probably pretty good, too.I also like Labyrinth of Evil (though, I haven’t finished it) by James Luceno, Kenobi by John Jackson Miller (it’s a very slow read with the non-Obi-Wan parts on Tatooine, but the Obi-Wan parts are nicely ouchy about his relationship with Anakin, even after everything that’s happened). Yoda: Dark Rendezvous is good as far as I’ve read it, though, more focused on Yoda and Dooku, but if you’re interested in the prequels, it’s a great book to read!It’s been awhile since I’ve read the Jedi Apprentice books and they’re very, very obviously written before all of the PT movies were made, much less before The Clone Wars was made, and so I’m not sure I recommend them or the Jedi Quest books (I also have trouble getting into the author’s style), so you can’t really take them for their worldbuilding or that these events happened (because they’re contradicted by stuff that comes later), but I do find that Jude Watson can really write a quotable as hell turn of phrase when she’s on. So, it’s a half-rec, just with some caveats! (I would anti-rec anything by Karen Traviss, who has said some pretty awful things IRL, but also clearly haaaaaates Obi-Wan and all of the Jedi, so when she wrote about them, it wasn’t very much fun.)The novelization of the Revenge of the Sith movie by Matthew Stover is also no longer canon, but is an absolute MUST READ for Obi-Wan and Anakin feelings, because they are WILDLY INTENSE in that book and it’s a really fascinating look at both of the characters, Anakin especially. Shatterpoint by him also gets a rec just for being by the same author!SHORT VERSION: Start with the Revenge of the Sith novelization and Wild Space, both of them aren’t canon (and often are contradicted by canon) but are FANTASTICALLY ENJOYABLE reads, then the Choose Your Destiny: An Obi-Wan & Anakin Adventure and the From a Certain Point of View short stories, then Labyrinth of Evil, and then maybe some comics and go from there! ♥

okay so. dead poets society is a pretty obvious choice here because i yell about it constantly but just. the poetry aspect!! already incredible and then starring young Robert Sean Leonard and Ethan Hawke!! and the SUBTEXT okay i think we’ve learnt I’m unable to form a coherent review here but in conclusion five stars

next up one that i watched on end as a kid: Melody (1971), which was also released as S.W.A.L.K for Sealed With A Loving Kiss. Can you tell I know all the trivia for this movie? It stars the two kids from Oliver! and Tracy Hyde. It starts off as more of a story about classism, and then turns into a story about puppy love about halfway through, which is a bit weird pacing wise but towards the end you get a scene of concerned parents and teachers getting into a giant fight with the students, which ends with the headmasters car getting blown up, which makes up for it imo

Fly Away Home!! Just a good heartwarming tale about a girl connecting with her father by building a miniature aeroplane because you saved some geese and now they’ve imprinted on you (as you do). kinda ironic that i love this one so much seeing as i hate geese but there you have it

The Karate Kid (1984): what can i say man I’m a sucker for undertones of classism it’s why i liked Kingsman (not enough to make the list i don’t think but it gets a mention). Plus when i first saw it i sat by my window for an hour until i managed to catch a fly with chopsticks so there’s that

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure: Not much to say here as it is possibly the stupidest movie ever but also the funniest and i love it a lot. also Keanu Reeves is there

Rear Window: okay last one but i figure i need at least one actual classic in here. it’s a Hitchcock suspense film in which a reporter breaks his legs and spends his time observing the neighborhood through his window. From there he sees his neighbor fight with his wife, then the next day taking out his rolled out matress, leading him to believe his neighbor has murdered his wife. He enlists the help of his girlfriend (played by Grace Kelly who is just!!) and his housekeeper to investigate. I really love how you only get to see the events happen through the window the protagonist views them from and like. Grace Kelly’s wardrobe in this movie is SO nice

How do much do I ship it?: Never heard of it/ Notp / Dislike / used to ship / neutral / maybe / ship it / aww / otp / IS IT CANON YET?

What non sexual activities do they like to do together?Training, working out, doing some races around the clouds, and Dumbbell cheering RD on at sporting events ^^

Who does chores around the house?RD’s not always the most active about that, so that’d be up to Dumbbell lol

Who’s the better cook?Hmm, not sure if I can see either of them being the cooking type so I’d say they’d prefer takeout/microwavable meals :p

Who’s the funniest drunk?Probably RD, who I’d imagine might turn into one of those sappy/giggly drunks ;p

Do they have kids?Yep! I’d imagine they’d have either a boy or girl (and maybe a couple other kids down the line) :)

One thing I like about this ship?I like the idea of how they can be the type of couple who challenges eachother in a more “playful” way now, and that despite their rocky past as kids they were able to move away from that after RD proved herself and thus could potentially bond more if given the time for it ^^

One thing I don’t like about the ship?They haven’t really interacted much since the “Sonic Rainboom” episode, and the most Dumbbell ever seems to appear is through flashbacks nowadays (and even Hoops tends to get more focus than Dumbbell out of their trio group, for some reason :u)

The song I would say fits them?Hmmm, maybe something like “Just the Girl” by Click Five? With the themes of how despite RD acting so stubborn and annoyed with him that Dumbbell can’t help but like her anyway? :3

MIB: International - My 1st “review” thoughts

SPOILERS AHEAD for MIB: INTERNATIONAL (2019)

So.. I went to see the new film “Men In Black: International” (2019) the other day. It was an early preview, hence me already having seen it, though it comes out only tomorrow in local theaters here.

1. A look back/History: I know I have seen the original MIB film. And I mean... film. The first MIB film from 1997. I don’t think I ever saw the second MIB II from 2002 or the last one, MIB 3 from 2012. Also... I do know I quite enjoyed the original/first film, but I have no specific memories from it. So I did not find it to be “one of my faves of all time” (those are the films I remember in detail)

2. I looked at the critics/viewers early reviews & was a bit surprised to find how “negative” the reviews were, and how disliked the film seems to be. Though most of the criticism seems to be about comparing this to the original film (trilogy) & it being different/not connected to it...in ways that was expected. And about how this is a mindless summer blockbuster film.

3. I personally quite liked the film. And since I don’t remember (basically) anything from the original MI, I had the luxury of not comparing the two (or finding any “continuity” issues or anything like that). I also went in fully aware that this is a summer blockbuster, so I did not expect anything besides that from the film. I also went basically because of the cast. I wanted to see “Thor” & “Valkyrie” working as a Team again. I also went in not knowing much about the film. I had seen the trailer or few, and some BTS pics/vids from social media, but I was pretty much unspoiled for the film.

The film is not great/spectacular (just good/ok), but it delivers what it’s supposed to...for a summer blockbuster. I also liked that in my eyes the film did not take itself too seriously. They knew when to “laugh at themselves”. It might not have anything unexpected, or memorable, or anything else special, but it is a fun entertainment with a little mystery, lots of fun teamwork, many gadgets, lots of colourful characters from many species (local & alien)... so it’s cool.

4. Some moments from the new film that I remember (the most) after this first viewing:

M as in Molly & H as in Henry

Everyone wanting to push the (big) red button. #PushTheButton

That space train (transformation) scene (from NYC to London... to other places) was cool!

Agent M was not expecting the taxi ride to be what it was. neither did I. That “taxi ride to the secret club” was also cool.

The desert convo where the Pawny is the mediator/translator... between the two characters, who are “not on speaking terms” at the moment, while they are standing next to each other, so can hear anything the other says, but both tell Pawny to tell the other what they have to say. And Pawny, at times, changing the message “a bit”.

The arms dealer has extra arms! That’s... kind of funny. And arms dealer who has lots of arms (she has more arms than humans usually have... 3 not four as I previously typed)

That moment when one of the MIB London office ladies (alien species) uses her alien magic skills to “freeze/slow/turn back time - when they show “Thor” walking in slow-motion... that was kinda silly, and funny scene. It’s horrible in reality (she/they were ogling at him), but visually it was beautiful scene.

That moment, when Agent M makes Agent H realize he was neuralyzed the last time in Paris/at Eiffel tower, cause he has that one specific story/explanation of events, and no other recollection... and that’s his whole memory of it, and he realizes that it’s a “rehearsed” story/memory, hence not real/what really happened.

That sweet reunion moment, when the little girl, who is now grown up / changed, meets the cute little alien “teddy bear” (who has also grown up & changed) she met two decades ago, again... And finally learns what the two words the furball told her as goodbye really meant.

The ending “twist” AKA “Who is the mole in London office” was kinda easy to guess, though I must admit that they did add enough little details to make me question if it’s someone else (I suspected three other characters at certain moments, too), because movies can sometimes use false hints & I don’t think that it’s always as it seems. But even though you can probably guess who the mole is & how it all ends, it’s kinda fun two hours.

MIB:I/MCU “parallels”: While Avengers have THOR, The God of Thunder (and Hammers), MIB: International have THOH, The Henry of Hammers. In other words: that moment/scene, when Agent H uses a hammer as a “tool”. That made me think of Chris H’s other recent role, Thor. To be more specific he throws a hammer at someone, who catches it & his line to that is “That was an incredible catch!”

MIB: I/MCU “parallels”: That moment when its mentioned he (helped to) saved the universe. Chris H. played a character in MIB: I, who (thinks that he) helped to save the Universe & he also played a character who helped to save the Universe in Avengers/MCU films.

MIB: I/MCU “parallels” : That moment, when the trio crash lands in the desert reminded me of the first IronMan film & how Tony crash-landed in the desert in his first suit.

MIB:I/MCU “parallels”: That moment when Tessa T. plays a character, who is considered to be a QUEEN (Pawny: Are you a queen / Agent H: Indeed she is...) in MIB:I & when she is given the title of QUEEN of New Asgard in Avengers. Endgame. Two films, where the same actors are doing a scene, where her character is pointed as/thought of as a QUEEN.

MIB/Elementary “parallels”: That method that M used to wake up napping H was so Holmes/Watson. You know...that scene when Agent H is sleeping behind his desk at work & Agent M has to talk to him, but he doesn’t wake up easily, so she drops a pile of books on the table to wake him up. ;) And then he tries to cover it up by claiming he was meditating, and thinks he fooled her. But then she tells him he has a tell - he snores when he “meditates”.

Pawny was the highlight of the film, and the funniest character. His lines/scenes got the most reactions & laughs from the audience when I was watching. I really loved the character - both the looks (the tiny pawn was the most important piece in the game/film) and the lines. And he got to serve two queens in this film & did an honourable job!

Tessa T. as Agent M. was the (next) highlight of the film. Her role was (IMO) central to the story. Chris H as Agent H. (this films James Bond... in many ways) was also good. And while Emma T.’s Agent O. (the boss, who recruits M...after she finds the men in black...after two decades of searching) does not have a lot of screentime, she is memorable, too. Then there are the other colourful characters: Agent High T., who did his job, Agent C, who played his part, Riza...& her bodyguards who had some great action/fight scenes.... And the Dancing alien “fire” twins did their job as the “scary enemies”

Though the film did add scenes/moments that can be used as a built up for future romance between the leads (typical to Hollywood films), then I liked that in this film there was not, not really, any romance between the two leads. Sure, the looks and all at the end suggested that in the next films they might take the story there, but I liked that they were a great team, and buddys in this one. The rookie & the “veteran” - one eager to prove themselves, the other once with great promise (best agent)...but now kinda not taking things that seriously.

I also liked that despite things he got promoted as the new boss, because as the old boss had said - he had potential. And I liked that he got the custody of Pawny for now (I hope it’s like with Clyde in Elementary, when the two share the “custody” of the “pet”)

5. Some quotes (not word by word, cause I can’t remember them all, accurately, I think):

The universe is a sort of chemical reaction. And the Universe is real. (as a response to “Love is not real, just a chemical reaction”)

Always remember: the universe has a way of leading you to where you're supposed to be, at the moment you're supposed to be there. (and the quote becoming real at the end of the film)

Too late. I already pledged the loyalty. I wish you’d said, “No, no, no,” before. (I pledged my loyalty to you, my new queen)

I’m not losing another queen.

Why is he wearing pink pants? (that’s a question the film asks, and one that is never answered)

For research for a film on rave culture

1. Can you remember your earliest encounter with rave music/culture?

I think it was in the early years of secondary school so for me around 1991/92. One of my friends got given some tapes from the Dreamscape and Fantazia raves by some of the other kids at school and lent me a DJ Dougal tape from Milwaukees and a Ratpack tape from the Fantazia Castle Donnington rave. I'd listen to these religiously every night in bed to help me get to sleep! Being too young to attend raves at this point I remember trying to imagine how the setup would be with the DJ and MC at an event. For some reason I thought the MC would be stood behind a podium with sheets of lyrics that they read out.

2. Can you describe what you like about the atmosphere at a rave?

I went to my first rave (Dreamscape 11 at The Sanctuary in Milton Keynes, July 1994) at the age of 16. I remember walking in and seeing all the decor, hearing the loud music, whistles and horns and thinking "wow". The best thing though is the sense of unity with the other people there no matter what background they are from. A shared love of music and dancing.

3. Do you have a favourite raving story/memory?

One of my favourite memories is a Helter Skelter rave at The Sanctuary around 1996 where they were also using the Rollers roller skating rink as a second arena in addition to The Sanctuary warehouse. There was a problem with maybe too many tickets having been sold so you had to queue up outside either venue to get in them throughout the whole night despite having already navigated the main queue to get into the whole event. My friend and I came up with a plan so that we wouldn't have to queue whereby I pretended to have an asthma attack and needed to get my inhaler from my sister who was inside. This worked not once but twice but on the second occasion my friend and I were both led to the first aid room where I had to lie down and continue the pretence for some time while my friend tried not to laugh.

4. What’s your worst raving memory?

I don't really have a worst raving memory. There have been a few dodgy situations like one of my friends getting mugged or one of us not feeling too well but that is just part of the experience. A lot of the best clubs have edgy atmospheres and clientele but if you want to hear cutting edge music you have to be prepared to experience that.

5. Have the police ever turned up at rave you attended?

I've been to a few illegal raves where the police have shown up but they are usually relatively cool and want to work out whatever situation it is they are attending for. Some of the bigger legal raves will have police in attendance but again they are usually alright and don't act in a heavy handed or unrealistic way from my experience.

6. What is the funniest thing that ever happened at a rave?

Probably the asthma attack story above or maybe when one of my friends did some strong ecstasy and had to be led around the club by us as he was too high! Walking through the chill out room at that event with him resulted in all the people in the chill out area cheering and clapping.

7. Is it about the music or the drugs?

Both. Ecstasy is so important because it makes people dance who wouldn't normally and also because it creates empathy. Once these things are learned though you tend to go to the clubs more for the music and less for the drugs I think.

8. Has the World got better or worse since the UK rave scene circa 1988/92?

You have to say better. Even though it might not appear so sometimes (mainly due to increased prevalence of our ability to see the wrongs of the world through new media imo).

9.What does rave culture mean to you?

Rave culture is more than a fad or hobby for me. It's a way of life. Having experienced the neutral free zone that is a rave and seen how most people are able to act in a much better way in that environment has led me to try and spread that to other areas of life. I've also spent the better part of my life studying, writing and blogging about rave culture (see my current blog: www.scuffeddeejays.tumblr.com).

10. How much of an impact do you think UK Rave Culture has had on the world?

It's had a massive impact. Look at the music charts and you'll see its influence everywhere to the point where it seems to have (along with rap) eaten guitar music alive!

11. How has raving impacted your life?

Rave has had a huge impact on my life. Many of my favourite nights out were at a rave. Many of my friends and memories are intertwined with it. I'm still writing and talking about it now at the age of 40.

12. Do you have any regrets?

None.
