Sounds Like: Something you’d find in a soundtrack for a nostalgic film about teenage love in the 70s

Most music nerds can tell you that Detroit’s music scene in the 1960s and early 70s was rich in R&B and soul. Thanks to the success of Motown Records, Detroit became one of the few cities in the United States that is synonymous with music. It is also the home of Hala, an indie rock project that stemmed in the neighborhood of New Center in Ian Ruhala’s attic turned studio.

“From the tiny window at the front of my room I could see the Motown Museum from across the street,” says Ruhala, “The history as well as the musicians who surrounded me, were a definite influence when I started out in the local scene at the time.”

In 2016, Ruhala released “Spoonfed,” a collection of 12 songs, an altogether 40-minute project made up of wavy guitar interludes. “Spoonfed” turns five in a few months but despite its age, the album continues to pack a global punch. And thanks to the power of Spotify’s Discover Weekly feature, one of the most beloved tracks “What is Love? Tell Me, Is It Easy?” has a mind-blowing 8 million streams on the platform (and counting).

“I guess, the first really interesting thing that made me acknowledge that something positive was beginning to happen, came when my friend Samia messaged me a YouTube link to Emma Chamberlain singing “What Is Love, Tell Me Is It Easy?”, in her car. That made me laugh.”

His latest release came in a pair of sunny tunes one titled “Sorry” and the other “More Than Anything.” The success of Hala can be traced back to many roots but a notable feature is Ruhala’s artistry when it comes to guitar. The track “Sorry” best exemplifies that fact. it features jumpy strings and drums, with Ruhala’s dreamy vocals singing “Your weekend is drifting on and on/ I just don't know if I can go on/ To get it.”

Totally Vain: In the past, you’ve shared that it's important you write and record music that is true to your experience. Has there ever been a sort of still period that puts you in a writer’s block? If so what do you do to get out of it?

Ian: Writer's block is definitely something I have felt from time to time. I just find it really hard sometimes to sit down with other songwriters, and write about a certain subject matter; “summertime,” or “love,” etc… It kind of feels forced at times like that. At home, I find that my best ideas come usually at night time, when my brain for some reason seems to be working at its most. And, if I get stumped, sometimes it is best just to step away from a song, or the guitar/instruments in general, and things will pop into my head much more naturally after that. Maybe a certain experience will also spark a lyric, or chorus line during this period of separation from the music.

TV: Your music often times reminds me of the kind of music you’d find on a movie soundtrack, so I’m just curious if you have a favorite one or if they are places of inspiration for you?

Ian: Many songwriters think of music in broad ways; colors, or with a much more theoretical approach. I really like to write sometimes with a more cinematic approach. In doing that, I find that music video concepts will sometimes come even before the song is completely finished. This usually makes the thematic element of the song more obvious in the beginning stages, which is definitely helpful in keeping my mind on track. Not to sound too simplistic, but Freaks & Geeks has a really great soundtrack that I find covers a lot of ground musically over every episode. There are a ton of others I could mention, but that one I feel is a good example of following a formula of being un-formulaic. Honestly the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, is another great, and popular example of this.

TV: I remember seeing an interview of yours where you’re talking about “What is Love? Tell Me, Is It Easy?” and you mention that you recorded most of the instrumentals on your own and you had to work that way since. Is that still true? Do you plan to incorporate a band during studio sessions? If yes, how has that transition been for you?

Ian: Up until this point I have recorded everything, by myself, and at home. I am definitely not ruling anything out, but I really do enjoy working and recording in the most independent way possible. But, who knows? One day I would really like to do a 70s style, singer-songwriter album, with string players, and all that additional “jazz.” Something a la Van Morrison, Nilsson, Bowie, or McCartney, you know?

TV: When you go into the process of making an album or any collection of music that tells a story, what is the first step? How does that vision play out in your head and finally come into fruition?

Ian: I think with making a cohesive body of work, I usually start with setting limitations for what I want to create for myself sonically speaking. For me, recording can sometimes take a long time, and working with the same gear helps with keeping things somewhat similar and following this idea of continuity in some form or another. With that being said, I think this also allows me to do whatever I may want to do genre-wise, or in the vein of storytelling, and get away with it; because I am still utilizing what gear I initially limited myself to use, in order to record the songs.

TV: Before you started playing music, did you keep a journal or write creatively?

Ian: When I was younger, I did a lot of illustrating which I would most definitely consider to be a creative outlet. I made comics with friends and things of that nature. But, no I did not really keep a journal, actively, even though now I do like to handwrite lyrics, in order to more visually realize what I like and do not like.

TV: What makes good production?

Ian: A good ear, that will not be satisfied until the sound imagined is created or replicated.

TV: What do you feel is the best song you’ve released and why?

Ian: That is a really hard question to answer, but I feel like “Sorry” is maybe the song that I am most proud of (as of right now). I spent a lot of time, vigorously focusing on that track, and I feel like it opened the door for me, capability-wise, to make music with a more intense production component. I probably did over a hundred takes just to nail the guitar solo in that song. Chopping up bits and pieces, making sure it was all in time, as well as I just wanted to create something different from other solos I had been hearing at the time. I wanted something fast, intricate, out of left field, but also with a pop sensibility.

TV: So you’ve finished your US tour and now you’re supporting The Regrettes & Greer on a few dates. Do you enjoy touring? What kinds of things have you learned about being a musician on the road?

Ian: I really enjoy meeting fans, and with touring, that is definitely the easiest way to pursue and have that connection. It is just incredibly surreal for me to meet people that are excited about my music in the same way I am excited about others. And, I know for me, those moments of interaction with an artist were and are really special to me. I think the biggest take away with touring in support of artists like Hellogoodbye, or playing on the road with Anna Burch, has been learning how to be patient, and empathetic towards your fellow bandmates. Knowing you could not be doing what you are doing without them, really puts things into perspective.  

TV: One of your songs was sampled on a hip hop track, Big K.R.I.T’s “High Beams (feat. WOLFE de MÇHLS),” did that at all persuade you to begin thinking about messing with other music genre stylings than the ones you have in the past?

Ian: Staying in just one lane, musically-speaking, for me has never been of interest. Going back to the question regarding movie soundtracks, I feel the best soundtracks are ones that run the gamut when it comes to musical genre. The music I am currently working on, to me, feels genre-less in a way. Because, I am consciously “attempting” to write out of my comfort zone. I think this will make a lot more sense when my next record comes out, as I try to tap into a little bit of everything, from hip-hop, to pop, punk, and country.

En Defensa

 (Week 1)

 Thania introduced some self-defence terminology and kick boxing techniques. She gave us an insight of her work and what she is claiming to do in the space; bring self-defence in dance.

 Her idea is to make a piece about our inner battles and how we can defend ourselves when battling with our personal inner demons. Inner battles could be battles with our body image, as women, spiritual battles, psychological. She wants us to generate movements from our inner battle – they will be our journey/inspiration.

 Thania like to work with vocabulary – she likes to have something to work on and create something raw.

 One way for Thania to generate ideas and groups them is to use sticky notes. She asked us to write on sticky notes what we battle/struggle with and stick them on the walls. We then read them, put them into categories we created; Mental health, Family, Behaviour, Body, Emotion, Dance and Miscelanious. This, on a personal level, helped me realize how much we have in common with each other. We all battle with similar ‘’demons’’. It also saved us time and gave us a clearer picture later on when we were given improvisation and devise tasks.

 Thania likes to give us improvisation tasks, solo, in duets or in groups to help us play with and understand what she has taught us. For example, when she talked to us about kick boxing techniques and terminology she gave us a task to create a deflecting phrase.

 This week we came across ‘’Deflecting’’, ‘’Sparring’’, ‘’360 defence’’, ‘’Take down shrimp’’ and ‘’headlock’’.  I was interested in learning a little bit more about these techniques and how they are connected to the work and in a dance context, so I did a little more research.

  ‘’Deflecting’’

In martial arts, blocking is the act of stopping or deflecting an opponent's attack for the purpose of preventing injurious contact with the body. A block usually consists of placing a limb across the line of the attack. (Wikipedia, 2018).

  ‘’360 Defence in Krav Maga’’

 Self-defense exercise taught in order to improve reaction speed against outside attacks.

 (Week 2)

 This week was mainly spent talking and learning about Laban theory, Laban movement analysis and how it can help us understand what Thania wants in terms of self-defence.

I think as a class we would understand things better if we were given tasks to improvise what we have talked about rather than just talking about them and applying them straight away to the choreography. Also the explanations could be worded simpler using examples that are easier to understand and remember.

This week we managed to get a rough idea/structure of just half of the sections. I felt, personally, that the less material we did and the more we went over the same material, I kept losing my focus and concentration and my brain would give up easily and I would get frustrated with myself for not getting what Thania technically wanted.

 Thania also wanted us to try and do some WWE lifts by showing us a video on Youtube. None of us felt comfortable with doing it straight away because we couldn’t clearly understand the technique they were done and how to safely lift each other. I think if we could slow down the video and slowly and thoroughly go through the lift we would’ve felt more comfortable and safe in doing them.

 At times I feel like I still don’t understand the work and I feel that I need to create more material to have more context of the work.

   (Week 3)

 This week felt a little bit more productive. As a class we struggled understanding the different kinds of planes in the space. Whenever Thania asked us to work on planes we automatically stopped thinking about everything else and focused on the specific plane we were asked to create something or work on because we couldn’t understand them. For me, creating on a specific plane was extremely hard as I didn’t have a clear idea of how each plane works in space since we never worked with planes before.

As the week progressed and we devised more material, the piece started clearing up. We had a structure to work towards and Thania was satisfied with most of the material we created.

We learned a variety of kicks and we had to create a phrase using these kicks. We all found it fairly easy to understand the technique of the kicks and our devised phrases were good.

Throughout the process of this week a few questions were raised:

-          How do I not reduce/sacrifice the quality of my movement when speed increases?

-          How do I control my frustration and give myself a break and try again?

-          How do I work with a particular touch?

Towards the end of the week we focused on cleaning material we did last week rather than moving forwards with the choreography. We invested a good amount of time in the details of the material rather than creating more. In a way, going in this pace was useful as it gave us a clearer understanding of the details Thania wanted. However, I have noticed that going over the same material left most of us fatigued.

At times it felt as if I needed more context as it comes to martial arts to help me get into character and develop the theatrical aspect Thania wanted.

 ‘’En Defensa’’ (Week 4)

 The final week of this work process was very productive. We needed a lot of work on our theatrical intend as it was something we are all lacking and it is important for Thania in this piece. As the piece became clearer and we had a clearer structure it was easier for us to add the aggressiveness, fierceness and everything more real Thania was asking for.  

We finished the work on Thursday and on Friday we spent some time talking about the piece’s choreographic and aesthetic priorities. Thania asked us what we thought her priorities were when creating this piece:

o   Literal theatrical movements

o   Grounded/passive weight movements

o   Dynamic movements

o   Effort qualities

o   Laban technique

o   Planes as an aesthetic map – helped her with time management, editing out things.

o   Improvise devise

  Clashes in our devising process:

o   When given in task we focused on physicality (eg. Plane on which movements were on)

o   We prioritised timing rather than effort qualities

o   Thania mostly gave us corrections on quality movement rather than timing

o   Lack of theatricality

Throughout this process I’ve gained a lot of patience and the ability to respond to changes of material. Being okay with not knowing. Gained confidence in partnering / body weight lifting.

 I’ve also noticed that Thania likes to device within an aesthetic task, gives more emphasis on the clarity of movement rather than timing, works with group dynamics, emotion, personality, aspects of human relations and theatrical aspects. She is also very eclectic and uses literal images in a theatrical way.

"oi, let's go. why you stuck in your position? the ache on your head will be worse if we don't go to clinic, you idiot." tsukishima's voice makes your soul comeback to real life, you blinked for a second. "did you just said you wanna bring me to clinic?" "no, i wanna tie you to the net for a new pole." silent. you looking him without says anything, and tsukishima just sighed. "ofc i'll bring ya to clinic oh my god, why you such a idiot fools like that duo huh? this is my apologize, can you just understand?" and whatever he did for you, his saltyness, his scold, his rude. you know he still your boyfriend, tsundere-shima.

situation : study-date with your boyfriend (つ≧▽≦)つ♡

thinking about tsukishima spinning his pen while you two in the middle of the study-date.

he's so focused on one question that you ask to him cuz that question is very hard. while wait him thinking to answering the question, you leaning your jaw to edge of table and starting looking at him to get rid your boredness.

but, you instead focused to his hand that playing the pen by spinning it very smooth. it's make you feel mind blowing. how can? you ask to yourself. cuz it's very interesting thing to watch, you can't switch your eyes from his hand. until tsukishima feels some strong energy is pointing at him know. he's turning and finding you're who looking at his hand.

ouh. he just realized.

then tsukishima stopping his hand activities for sudden. ofc make your eyebrows are up, eventually you're turning to another object (his face) cuz you think tsukishima is already find the answer of the question you ask to him. but instead of it, you just get silent stare from your boyfriend who crossing his arm in front of you right now.

"why you stopping it? do it again. the moves of your your hand that can spinned the pen." you ask to tsukishima innocently without knowing what's mean of his silent stare to you right now.

"you know? we're here not to do tutorial how to spinned the pen. we're here to study, or maybe study date that you always say. and you must know, i was trying to finding the answer the question that you asked to me since earlier. this is your question, why the only one who struggling to find that damn answer is me meanwhile you just enjoying look at unnecessary thing that i do? is this your your gratitude to me, huh?" he ask simply but success to slap you face back to reality.

"n—no, but i mean i just bored can't focused on this study. every question is very hard. that's why i'm looking the amazing thing you do with your pen" you answering with gloomy face and little sigh. but tsukishima isn't giving you won. he comeback to his book and started focused to find the answer of the question again, "then, just try to read your book. instead of looking my hand, read the book is giving more opportunity that maybe the answer is there." you widened your eyes, "tsukki—but!" "no buts. get back to study, mrs little pie." that's the last thing tsukishima said to you, and you just pouting while back to normal position of sitting up.

you feel irritated, tsukishima should knew that you're not on active mode for study today. you know this is for your own good, but CAN'T HIM NOTICE THAT HIS GIRLFRIEND IS VERY LAZY RIGHT NOW ARGH. you're pouting, maybe your eyes is focused on book—but your mind is busy to talks about tsukishima right now.

"focused, after we're end of study—i'll teach you how to do the amazing moves of my hand that you just talked since earlier. it's only if you're can study very well right now."

you blink for a second before turning at him with suprised gaze, but before your lips letting out an excited sentence—tsukishima speak again, "don't say anything. focused on your book, mrs little pie." he said that without looking out from his book.

only for a second you feel charge again and the energy on your soul is full. with biggest spirit, you're starting reading your book and trying to find important information to answer the question.

he success make your spirit comeback, tsukishima literally the number one if it's related of silent-supporting. even tho he makes you irritated, but the tsukishima really want you focused to study for your own good. yeah, like that.

and even tho he's trying to stop spinning his pen anymore to don't distract you, in every moment he do it again without realizing. fortunately you don't look at his hand right now, instead you reading your book very focused. cuz tsukishima already promise he will teach you're how to do it after of study, so you think that's more interesting to you wait than looking at his hand anymore

MEET (MY) OUR GOLD FISH 🐠

you're visit izana's house for the first time and finding your king has a gold fish that seems adorable in your eyes.

the beautiful eyes are looking forward every moves of gold fish who swimmin around inside the tank.

"adorable." you murmur with soft tone, praising the cute gold fish that you seeing in the your boyfriend's fish tank right now.

"you like it?" izana voice heard for sudden, you turn back and caught him walking to you with a glass of strawberry milk which is your fave.

"umh, they're adorable." you says while stood up again from your previous position (bend down). after that you're looking at izana who already in next of you. he is handing you that strawberry milk, and you accept it with happy smile before drinking it.

"i know right. those fish is yours start now on." izana says simply while looking at his fish tank, success for making your eyes widened and your hand keep the glass that you are holding away from your lips.

"uhm? i might be misheard—"

izana just shook his head, the hand who always beaten up the deliquents that, now is rubbing your hair softly.

"mine is yours and yours is mine, baby."

you blank for a second.

"but—"

"you get it, baby? should i repeat?"

izana turning to you and purposely bringing his lips close to your ear.

you happily accept the fish food from izana and walking closer to the front of tank. with sunny smile you're feeding all of fish in the tank. it's first time you feeding a fish, and this is going special because you do for your and izana's fish.

so fun activity, you can't holding your smile while looking at the happy fish who swimming around inside the tank to get the food that you're feeds to them. it's warming your heart.

without you're realizing, izana behind you draw a soft smile on his lips because looking the happiness that happen on you right now.

when the first date of you and osamu. you two going to his recommended restaurant (actually his fav), because he want to showing you about how yummy the food there.

in restaurant, osamu letting you to looking at the menu first. plus he says you can order the foods as much as you want. he doesn't doing this with no reason. because when the waitress coming and you says your order, osamu will learn important things about you from that.

"i want two large size of sandwich, but can you don't put tomato sauce on it? just mayonaise and spicy sauce. because i have allergic with tomato."

"then, one waffle with ice cream—can you please don't add honey on it? in menu it says the waffle will serve with honey as garnish."

"last, i want one hot dog but can you please give extra mustard because i like it <3"

that. that things is main reason why osamu bring you to this restaurant, giving you the book of menu first, and letting you order everything you want.

yeah, that's all because he want to know what things of food you like and you don't like or having allergic with it. with this chance, osamu can understanding about food things on yourself. he need this, for really.

not for weird things, but osamu want he can cooks you food very well by avoiding ingredient that you don't like or adding extra ingredient which is your fav.

the little things like this always be important for him, because osamu loves cooks you a food.

no wonder, why he suddenly nods without any context after you done says your order. when you ask him what making he nods like that, osamu just shake his head slightly and looking at you with little smile.
