Dunmeshi Daemon AU thoughts BECAUSE I CAN
Laios: She isn’t actually settled, though they both pretend that she is. They never stopped enjoying the flexibility of her being able to change, but during Laios’ time in the military it became clear that it just gave people another excuse to bully him, so she “settled” as a white wolf.
Before the events of the story, only Falin knows that she still changes. Kabru, however, suspects. The rest of the party finds out not long after they set out to save Falin.
After Laios becomes king, she mainly stays in the form of either a lion, a hawk, or the white wolf.
Marcille: Neither Marcille nor her parents had any idea when he would settle, which was frustrating for her, and especially hard when her dad died before it happened.
He eventually settled into a nightingale, not long after she finished Ambrosia, much to her delight. She thought it was all very romantic and grand, even if he does like to mess up her hair.
He doesn’t sing much after the events of the story, but she still tells him he is quite noble and lovely.
Mithrun: Absolutely does not have one. They got ate. Before the dungeon, they were a dove.
Thistle: He took the form of a colorful songbird once Thistle started learning to play music, and would often accompany him. Sometime during Thistle’s thousand years as lord of the dungeon, he separated from Thistle. He wandered the dungeon, spending a lot of time around the town where the people of the Golden Kingdom live. They recognized him, even long after Thistle stopped visiting.
Sometimes he would report to Thistle. Sometimes they would go years without seeing each other.
He wasn’t there for the fight with Laios’ party. Yaad thinks he saw him briefly when Thistle woke up on the surface, but he’s not sure.
Kabru: He desperately wanted her to settle as a bird (which are quite popular with elves and also good at eavesdropping) (yes, the bird imagery of the canaries is very much Part Of Elf Culture in this AU). However, she is a bengal fox. Ah, well. It’s nice to have a piece of his home stuff with him. And she does give very good snuggles.
Falin: FALIN’S IS HARD… I think she might change after the chimera.
I like a beetle for her pre-resurrection. Maybe a ladybug? Or a jewel beetle, if a ladybug is too small.
After the story, she changes to a dragonfly. Everyone (expect Chilchuck) tries very hard not to make the obvious joke there. Chilchuck just makes the joke.
Chilchuck: With his canon weight management, Chilchuck is practical-minded enough to have his job influence his daemon’s form. I think she would be a rat or mouse - something small that can help him with traps, and can fit places where he can’t.
A lot of half-foot adventurers end up with rodent daemons, actually, due to the nature of their usual work. This can be the subject of mockery from the same kinds of people who are happy to use a half-foot as monster bait (or worse). Because of this, Chilchuck doesn’t mind disparaging comments about her - they help him know who is and isn’t trustworthy. However, privately, he’s quite defensive of her.
Senshi: Though she wasn’t technically settled when he went into the dungeon with his mining group, she spent most of her time as something nocturnal and practical for their work. Maybe a badger.
By the time he finally made his way out, she had settled as a tortoise. Though he loves her, the tortoise form is harder to work around sometimes - she’s slow and she takes up a lot of space, and caring for a cold-blooded creature in the dungeon isn’t always easy.
It’s not until after he meets the party, when Laios remarks offhandedly that some tortoises can survive for months without food, that Senshi fully understands why she settled on that form.
Izutsumi: she doesn’t have a daemon. Throughout childhood, this only added to her fears about not being ‘really human,’ and exacerbated her feeling separate and Wrong.
During the encounter with the succubi, she realizes the truth - she is bound to her daemon. That’s where her beast form comes from.
Due to being bound together at a young age, they are unable to change form, and stuck as their favorite form to take at the time - a cat.
[metaphor for trauma forcing children to grow up far before they should too on the nose? No? Cool]

It should have been the other way around. Jaskier was a creature of sunshine, bright as a summer flower and gaudier than a whole circus. Jaskier was all color and light. Jaskier should have gotten the day.
For his own reasons, too, Geralt would have preferred the night. It would be more practical – there were some monsters that only came out under cover of darkness, and he couldn’t hunt them at all now. But, selfishly, he also wished he could have had this excuse to not have to deal with people anymore. To finally just let Jaskier handle it all, start to finish, the way he’d so often insisted he should.
Usually while insulting Geralt’s ability to communicate in something other than threats and insults, mind, which was rude and uncalled-for. Geralt only communicated in threats and insults maybe half the time. Less, when the bard wasn’t around to get on his nerves.
Though these last few months, he’d been communicating mostly through glares. So maybe that wasn’t entirely true either.
The lark came back, then, putting an end to his wistful musing. It flitted around his head, twittering furiously, until Geralt raised a hand for it to perch on. Then it preened itself, fluffing its breast and poking at its wings in swift, fussy little motions. Geralt had to swallow around a sudden lump in his throat.
It was so small. He didn’t even feel its weight on his hand. It was such a delicate, beautiful thing, with its bright yellow face striped dramatically in black, the gentle blurring of light brown wings to dun-white breast and the black collar round its throat. It had two little black tufts of feathers like fierce little eyebrows, giving it a permanent flair of drama.
Its claws weren’t even long enough to pierce the leather of his gloves. It was so small.
I miss you, he didn’t say. Sometimes it was easier to talk to the bird than it had ever been to talk to the man, but sometimes it wasn’t. I’m sorry. I still don’t know how to fix this.
The bird took off again, chirping up a storm, only to land again at once on Roach’s head. Roach flicked an ear, but otherwise ignored it, plodding staidly on. The bird pulled at the swirl of fur at the top of her mane, preening her too.
Sometimes it would land on Geralt’s shoulder and preen his hair, too. Sometimes it would sidle along his shoulder and hop down past the edge of his pauldron and then nestle there, just beside his ear, peeping softly to itself as it drifted off to sleep. The brush of feathers was so soft against the side of his throat. So fragile, and so warm.
It wasn’t exactly Jaskier in there, Geralt knew. This wasn’t a choice Jaskier was consciously making. Geralt was just familiar, like Roach, and tiny little songbirds need somewhere protected to sleep. It didn’t mean anything, not really.
Geralt wondered, often, what he did during the night. Jaskier left him notes, so he knew he became a wolf – a huge silver-white wolf, which was so fitting it made him want to vomit – and that he’d never yet hurt Jaskier. Wouldn’t, Jaskier insisted, when Geralt had responded to learning this by chaining himself to the nearest tree the following sunset. In the mornings, Geralt remembered strange, stretching dreams of smell and sound and the layered silences of a nighttime wood, and – he never knew if he was just making this part up – he remembered warmth. A gentle hand stroking between his ears. Singing and chatter over the crackling of the campfires he was careful to assemble and light before darkness fell. A body pressed against his, trusting and tired.
The lark took off again, flitting out over the side of the road to swoop joyfully over a meadow of wildflowers. Geralt sighed. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. Roach flicked an ear at him, and he patted the side of her neck.
The road stretched on, endless. The lark soared against the brilliant blue sky, singing without a care in its tiny, delicate heart. Geralt watched, silence clogging his throat, and wished he still believed in promises he didn’t know how to keep. Wished he could promise, even to himself, that he’d see Jaskier again.

It is Wolf 359 day (also known as Christmas for some) and since I saw a stoat photoset on my dash I feel compelled to post about daemon hcs.
Eiffel - Word of God is raccoon, and it fits. The poor thing probably looks like she has mange during the season 2/3 timeskip, since there's no way astronauts are stuffing their daemons in spacesuits - they must have to go through some kind of pre-mission training to lengthen their range. They are not trained to get blasted lightyears apart though, rip. That's gotta hurt. Once he's recovered from his ordeal though I'm sure he takes advantage of their massively extended range to cause problems. There's no way I stole those donuts from the Urania's stores, commander! I was here in the comms room the whole time.
Minkowski - white-tailed eagle. This bird is found in Poland, and some versions of the Polish flag have a white eagle. It's also similar to but not exactly like a bald eagle - showing how Minkowski aspires to assimilate into Americanness but can't completely abandon her Polish heritage. Plus pilot = bird, it tracks.
Hilbert - rosencrantz-draws-things did a series of daemon paintings for the characters and while I don't agree with all their choices, I did like chameleon for him. He changes roles and faces when he needs to, whatever helps him survive.
Lovelace - The painting series I referenced gives her lioness, which I don't hate, although the logistics are a bit messy for a space station environment. Given the backstory I've envisioned for her I kind of want to spend more time reading about Puerto Rican fauna and get back to you on this one. How does the daemon situation work with her being a surrogate? Unclear but it sure keeps her up at night!
Maxwell - Ferret! The wonder twins have mustelid vibes to me, and I am always charmed by the story of the ferret who cleaned out the tubing of a particle accelerator.
Jacobi - Stoat to match Maxwell. They are the mustelid twins now. It just feels right.
Kepler - idk I don't care about him.
Pryce - Coconut octopus. Something a little bit unusual and unexpected, requires specialized care and upkeep, and octopi are extremely intelligent, with this species actively modifying its situation via tool use. She can carry him around in his own special tank.
Cutter - I never settled (lol) on anything for him, but given I like the idea of him bodyhopping (this has been thoroughly debunked by Word of God but oh well) I imagine that he keeps around the old body's severed daemon as a smokescreen. This leads to a very animated, lively guy with a strangely inert, unfocused daemon which makes him even more unsettling to everyone. He's impossible to read.
Hera - I saved her for last because she's a special case. When AI reach sentience a block of code just pops up in their programming, and that's their daemon. They're not physical in the same way humans are - why would their soul be? However, product testing indicated humans preferred to see something daemonlike, so customer-facing AIs get holographic projections of cute, non-threatening animals like puppies or songbirds. Hera has a bird until Hilbert takes her offline. When she comes back, she has control over the projection and can make it look however she wants. It's not actually her daemon but she can use it to express herself in a similar way, including projecting her humansona, which scares the crap out of people the first few times they see a random stranger on board.
Daemons in microgravity would be their own headache. I imagine crewmembers get velcro pouches on their uniforms or toolbelts sized for their daemons to keep them from floating away. Smaller daemons are preferable in the same way that there's a height range for astronauts - this is why I'm conflicted about Lovelace. Also, you know I am a #hater of 'daemon touching = sex' in AU settings and believe there are multiple kinds of intimacy, and spaceflight involves everyone getting real cool about a lot of stuff real quickly, so I think by season 3 Minkowski and Eiffel at least are hanging on to each other's daemons when they're out on spacewalks both for convenience and emotional support. (Eiffel is still stressed out about it but more because he is really bad at holding a raptor and scared of getting slashed by talons.) Hera occasionally perches her projection on their shoulders which again doesn't mean the same thing to her but gets the message across. If Jacobi is working on something fiddly Maxwell will be wearing both their daemons around her neck, and vice versa.
Bob does not appear with a daemon while wearing his Eiffel suit. The alternative would probably be more upsetting.

Imagine! We’ve talked about songbirds and snakes, we’ve talked about the black cat and golden retriever pairing, but what about a violent white wolf and a sweet doe hm?🐺🦌🥀Instead of a prom like modern times the Capitol has all these fancy dresses and masks their senior year. And Coriolanus is like damnit how am I going to dress up for this? I can’t even afford to look like the best baddie in the room and Tigris feels awful because she can only afford to make him a suit that’s decent. She spends months on it and makes it out of fuckin curtains! Like okay queen pop off! 👏 He doesn’t deserve Tigris I swear!💅🏻Then he gets a gift sent from the reader and it’s a white wolf mask🤍 It doesn’t cover the full face but it’s gorgeous! Coryo’s so shocked by it, but grateful and it matches his suit…which is also white as snow. He shows up, the masquerade ball is at President Ravinstill’s mansion and Coriolanus looks sharp!😘
Bro has no idea he’s going to be living in that mansion one day and become a menace to society🥀Everyone else be looking good too! (Sejanus is drinking fruit punch in the corner dressed as an angel because he is one, Arachne has this creepy spider mask, with a black dress that foreshadows her demise, Clemensia has a rainbow snake mask, also a foreshadow for her. Festus has a fox mask because that boy be playin games)
I thought of this idea while drinking wine!🍷I’m hyped now!🐺Then the reader has the audacity to wear a dress with roses on it and a mask that resembles a doe and she just smiles before asking him if he likes the mask she gave him. Coryo leans in and speaks in her ear…
“I am going to eat you alive.”🥀
And the reader is so confused. Like what did I do? Does he hate it? Wait. What’s that hungered look in his eyes? Oh no. I’m in trouble. Then he brings her away to a dark corner of a bathoom and everyone is so clueless to what’s going. Maybe Sejanus noticed, but he’s too absorbed with his fruit punch and cookies right now🙂The reader is so nervous about getting caught, but Coryo starts full on making out with her, then rips her panties off and just goes FERAL!👏He covers readers mouth so no one hears her, meanwhile while he’s pounding into her against the wall and they still have their masks on. After a few minutes their classmates have wondered where they’ve gone 👀 Coryo gets carried away and snarls before finishing in the reader. Then he’s a panting mess and he realizes the reader’s dress has slipped down and her bare tits are showing and her legs are shaking! She is all teary eyed and dazed. Girly you good!🤣
Coryo is just like “Oh, my bad sweetheart.” Then he helps reader fix herself up and he straight up stuffs her torn underwear into his pocket. Reader is still in shock while he sits her up on the sink’s counter and he starts wiping her inner thighs with tissue but she just keeps leaking and shaking while he’s like “Sorry, sorry just trying save you dress here, you alright?” Reader is still like I got fucked in Felix Ravinstill’s bathroom on a Saturday night damn!😵💫
Coryo helps the reader stand and kisses her forehead.
“Are you alright? Say something please.”
Then the reader just nods and whispers she’s alright.
“I don’t know what came over me, you look stunning tonight—thank you for the mask.”
Before the reader can say anything, all of the a sudden there’s a pounding pair of fists! Right outside the bathroom door, and they both flinch. The reader clings onto his arms in panic and Coryo tries to keep his composure. The door is locked but the pounding doesn’t stop. Livia Cardew is right outside the door acting like Maddy from Euphoria and she’s yelling while rattling the door handle and she’s shouting “Y/N what are you doing in there, I need to use the bathroom! Open up!” And the reader is internally screaming, Coryo scowls but doesn’t say anything and the reader says she’ll be out in a minute, but she doesn’t stop nagging. So, the reader makes Coryo hide in the bathtub and he thinks “This is ridiculous. I can’t stand Livia Cardew.” Livia comes in, dressed as cat 🐈⬛ with her claws out. She asks what took so long, but then she sees the flustered reader holding her stomach like she’s going to be sick and she shuffles out of the bathroom, her legs are still sore, she’s like please don’t look at me🫣 and Livia is like “Okay weirdo, yuck why does it smell musty in here? Did you throw up?” Coryo wants to murder Livia because she doesn’t even have to pee she only came in to powder her nose!😂
Coriolanus rolls his eyes and is like okay bitch now get out, this tub is making me claustrophobic and she leaves after fixing herself up and Coryo makes a run for it after that. He doesn’t get caught cause he’s sneaky, but when he finds reader he just clings to her arm and asks if she’s okay to walk and she just nods but keeps squeezing her legs together. Reader is still flushed, but she’s glad she has a mask on😳Sejanus is the only one side eyeing them like I know what you did ya nasties!🧐
Coryo acts as if he did nothing wrong, but he smirks a bit as President Ravinstill gives this boring speech about how proud he is of his son and his classmates for surviving the academy and their senior year blah blah blah. Coryo doesn’t care, reaping day is just around the corner and so is the plinth prize, he’s got his perfect doe, his prey around his arm so what does it matter? He takes a long sip of his posca. Snow lands on top.

a while back there was mention of dragon age daemon au but i don't remember, did you share your daemon headcanons?
for a very simple au i think that everyone has a daemon except dwarves, who don’t because they don’t have a connection to the fade (sorry guys :( it just makes sense in my heart they can have cool other stuff) and mages’ daemons can do stuff thats creepy to everyone else like witches in hdm. i actually think it would be fun if only mages’ daemons could talk or smth like that. obviously “severing” from your daemon is equivalent to being made tranquil
umm for a more layered au that ties it more deeply into da lore it would be fun to tie it more deeply into the da concept of spirits and demons. like everyone has a spirit but it can transform into a demon; chantry lore says that this is when there’s evil in your heart, but really it can also just be when you need a protector. or something like that. templar lyrium probably cuts them off from their spirits in some way which is part of why it does damage. when you templar silence a mage’s powers it deafens their connection to their spirit.
anyway onto the more important things, morrigan has a wolf (looks cool and tough as hell, actually should have a pack). to keep symbolism going with that pair i want to give alistair a sheep which he’s kind of embarrassed abt but it’s like one of the cool ones with sick horns that has soft wool AND could totally gore someone to death if it felt like it. velanna has um a porcupine. fenris has a white tiger and anders has a fox and he’s not saying he’s mad abt the canine feline assignment but yeah he IS mad abt it actually and HE thinks that— anyway anders’ might turn into something else bc of justice? or it’s already justice and “becomes” a different vengeance (affectionate) form during da2? merrill has something she thinks is boring but is actually kind of metal and also still cute like a little bird that traditionally migrates insanely long distances or like uhhh a poisonous newt. dorian has that cool monkey from the concept art or smth. leliana has an owl she wishes was a songbird. solas um has some kind of spirit he’s buddies with that’s pretending to be his spirit so he can cover up for not having one because it was Different somehow in his day, and possibly the spirit is cole idk just throwing that out there. cassandra has a shy little daemon she blushes furiously abt bc she thinks it’s too small and it hides in her armour. sera has a dragonfly. that’s what i have for u

There are times when he relishes in the Songbird's screams, watching his pretty lips opened in the most beautiful of songs.
However, there are also the times when all his pretty Songbird can do is muffle his voice in his neck, full of quiet whimpers, while curling his toes and barely holding on. These moments White Wolf adores just as much.
