now trouble's at the line
Louie and his brothers take their kayak out for a little adventure. It doesn't go very well.
Alternatively, the secret origins of Captain Lost.
(AO3 link in reblogs!!!) Requested by @violetganache42. Feel free to submit a prompt of your own.
-----
The boat sways on the water, gently rocking the boys as they sail along. Or… drift along? Row along? Louie’s never sure what the right boat words are, no matter how many times Uncle Donald’s told them. Huey knows, ‘cause there’s probably like ten different entries in his nerd book about boats, and Dewey probably does, ‘cause he’s a way better listener than Louie. He pays attention and fills Louie in later, most times, while Louie takes naps or plays games on his phone or dreams up his newest scheme under the table.
It doesn’t really matter, anyway. They’re out of the houseboat today, and Huey’s babbling away about some fish he saw and Dewey’s excitedly rowing thru the water, steering them further and further from shore. Uncle Donald said not to go too far, but he’s not here now, and Louie’s holding the map.
They might even find treasure this time.
Louie reclines against the back of the boat, cozy under their umbrella. There’s just enough space for him to chill, glancing lazily at the map every so often. It’s one of Huey’s nerd projects, a careful sketch of the shore and the docks, all places they’ve explored so far. All the boring, familiar, safe places they’ve been. Not much of an adventure, really.
They go out all the time anyway. Louie doesn’t know why—what kind of adventure is it, rowing along the same stretch of water dozens of times?—but he comes along. He’s supporting his brothers, in his own kind of way, and besides, it’s a great spot for a nap. No nagging Uncle Donald telling him he’s messing up his sleep rhythm or whatever, and just enough warmth from the sun overhead to be cozy, but not uncomfortable.
He looks at the map again, matching the rough stretch of shore they’re rowing past to Huey’s doodles. “There’s the uh… Puddle Beach? Peddle Beach? You gotta write bigger, Hue.”
“It’s Pebble Beach,” Huey corrects, gesturing to the stones on the sand as they pass. “I don’t think it really has a name, so I gave it one. Because of all the rocks!”
“Sure, yeah,” Louie stifles a yawn. “Turn left past here, Dewey. We’re almost to the Money Bin.”
“Ooh, the Bin!” Dewey perks up, rowing faster. “Maybe we can stop for lunch when we get there?”
“It is almost noon,” Huey approves. He looks up at the bright, yet cloudy sky, studying it for a moment. “But we should head back afterward. It looks like it’s going to rain!”
“Aw, c’mon,” Louie groans. “We just barely left! Besides, we’re nearly to the end of your map.”
“All the more reason to turn back! Junior Woodchuck rule 727—”
“Louie rule 727: if we go out on an adventure, we should actually do some adventuring. Don’t you wanna add more to this thing? I’m sure there’s a badge for something like that.”
“Well… I suppose we could keep going for a little while,” he decides. “But only another hour, and if we hear thunder, we’ll have to head to shore and call Uncle Donald.”
Louie begins to grumble, but Dewey cheers a little louder. “Yes! Let’s go exploring!”
They reach the Money Bin not too long later. Huey lays out a blanket, and Dewey unpacks their sandwiches and drinks. Louie stretches and yawns before plopping down on the blanket, smoothing out some wrinkles. There, he helped. Huey likes it when the blanket’s smooth and even.
Dewey hands him a sandwich, and he unwraps the plastic with one hand, not even bothering to sit up. Peanut butter again? It’s nice of Uncle Donald to pack them a lunch and all, but Louie wishes there’d be some variety sometime. It’s always the same sea they sail and the same sandwiches at lunch.
“Someday, I’m gonna make the biggest, fanciest sandwiches for lunch,” he muses, gesturing across the bay to the huge building on the sea. “I’m gonna have a big bin like that, full of treasure, and I’m gonna be the richest duck in the world.”
“Yeah?” Dewey prompts, looking up at the Bin. “What kind of sandwich?”
“Hmm… something fancy, like salted ham and pickles. And I’d get one of those little press things, so I could make it toasty.”
“I bet Scrooge McDuck eats like that every day,” Dewey’s voice is full of wonder. “And I bet he’s taken a boat through the coolest places. Like the Amazon! Or the moon!”
“I don’t think Scrooge McDuck has been to the moon. We would’ve heard about it on the news,” Huey scoffs. But when Louie looks over to him, his eyes are looking up too, with the same curious wonder. “But I bet he’s been on a lot of cool adventures.”
“We should go on an adventure,” Dewey declares. “A real one! We can take the boat all the way to the edge of Duckburg, and Uncle Donald doesn’t even have to know. We could map it all and explore somewhere new and maybe even find something nobody’s ever found before!”
“That does sound fun,” Huey agrees. “I might even get my own entry into the JWG!”
“We might even find a treasure and get stupid rich too!” Louie’s eyes are focused fully on the dollar signs in the windows. He’d never eat peanut butter again.
“Let’s go!” Dewey yells. “To adventure!”
He’s halfway back to the boat before Louie even realizes he’s hopped up, and he scrambles with Huey to pick up their stuff. They hurry back to the boat together, and set off in the water. Louie directs them toward the edge of their map, and Huey pulls out a telescope to scout ahead. Or… magnifier? Spy glass? Whatever it is, it makes him look like a pirate. And Dewey’s enthusiastically steering them ahead now, barely bothering with directions.
Seems like the perfect time for a nap, Louie reasons. They’re swaying gently on the water, and it’s nice and warm. It doesn’t feel like rain at all! He’ll just close his eyes for a few minutes, and his… his brothers will wake him wh… when they need the map….
“Louie!” Huey yells, and Louie shoots straight up. “Huh?”
“You fell asleep? I can’t believe you,” he scolds. “Do you even know where we are?”
“In the boat, duh,” Louie retorts. Dewey snatches the map from his hand, frowning at it, and Louie looks around. There’s an unfamiliar bridge ahead, with spooky, tall skyscrapers beyond, and the sky looks a lot gloomier and darker now. Maybe Huey was right, not that he’d admit it out loud.
“Please don’t tell me we’re lost,” Dewey’s face goes pale, like he’s just seen a ghost, or maybe like Uncle Donald’s just caught them in the middle of making trouble. “I don’t—I don’t recognize any of this stuff.”
“Uh oh,” Louie mumbles, looking all around them. He doesn’t recognize any of this either. Huey shakes his head, mumbling too, and Louie quickly realizes he’s starting to panic. “What is it?”
“My phone’s not getting service. I was gonna call Uncle Donald, but—”
“Mine was dead a while ago,” Louie mutters. “I wrote out a new scheme before lunch and drained it.”
“I left mine on the houseboat. I thought if we were going on a real adventure I wouldn’t need it.” Dewey looks like he’s about to panic too, looking around at the unfamiliar city. “Um… what do we do now?”
Huey takes a deep breath. “I’m the oldest, I can figure this out. Next time, we’ll bring more supplies. And for now, hm… let’s get to shore, and try to find a payphone, or ask someone if we can borrow their phone. We can call—”
A huge clap of thunder rocks the boat, and the boys all yell, reaching to hold onto each other. And almost immediately, rain begins to drizzle down, quickly drenching them. And they’re nowhere near the safety of the shore.
“Thanks, Captain Lost,” Dewey grumbles, reaching for the umbrella. “Some adventure.”
Huey laughs, scooting closer. “Captain Lost! Captain Lost!”
“Hey!” Louie squishes himself between his brothers, already freezing. “At least call me Captain Lost, sir. Have some respect.”
“Hmm… nah,” Dewey giggles, and they row the boat toward the shore. “Captain Lost! Captain Lost!”
By the time they’ve tied the kayak up, the rain has turned from a drizzle to a downpour. Louie’s hoodie is soaked all the through, and his brothers both look as cold as he feels. They’re all miserable, and he regrets even getting out of bed this morning.
Huey leads them down the first street they find, looking for a payphone, but none of them want to go too far from their kayak. And though it’s barely dinnertime now, there seems to be no one around. It’s almost like a haunted house, but everywhere. A haunted city.
“I wanna go home,” he mutters, kicking a rock into the gutter. “I’m wet and cold and hungry.”
“Me too,” Dewey agrees. “All these shadows are giving me the creeps, too.”
“I know. But I’m sure we’ll find a phone soon,” Huey reassures them, reaching to hug them both. “We just need to give Uncle Donald a call, and we’ll be home before bedtime. We didn’t go that far.”
“If we can find a phone,” Louie grumbles. If they can’t, they’ll be stranded, and it’ll be all his fault. Some brother he is! He’s—
“Did you say you needed a phone? You, uh, you can borrow mine if you want!”
The boys turn, in unison, to a figure on a doorstep they’re walking past. A young man, wearing a purple plaid button-up with sunglasses tucked into the collar. He’s holding a paper bag of groceries in one arm, clearly just gotten home, but he tosses his keys into the bag and fishes a cell phone out of his pocket. Then, he holds it out to Huey without a word.
“Thank you!” Huey takes it, and quickly dials Uncle Donald’s number. “We got stranded, we just need to call our uncle to come pick us up.”
“That’s okay,” he tells them. “Here, let me—let me put these inside while you do that.”
He drops his keys as Uncle Donald picks up, then hurries to unlock his door. Louie wonders why he’s so nervous—usually, kids are the ones scared of strangers—but keeps an eye on him as he unlocks his door. He sticks the bag on a table just inside, then grabs an umbrella leaning up against it. As Huey explains how they’ve ended up here, he pops the umbrella open and offers it to Louie.
“You can borrow this too, if—if you want. I’d invite you inside, but they always taught us not to go into strangers’ houses in the Junior Woodchucks.”
“Hey, he’s a Woodchuck too!” Dewey chirps, taking the umbrella and leaving Huey and Louie to share theirs. Huey nods, and Dewey continues, “Uncle Donald would have a fit anyway. He’s kinda… paranoid like that.”
The stranger laughs, his bright yellow beak turning up in a smile. “Yeah, adults can be like that sometimes. I can talk to him too, if you want?”
“We’re fine, I promise,” Huey says through the phone, then looks up at their newfound friend. “Hey, he says he can talk to you, if you want.”
There’s a pause, then Huey holds out the phone. The stranger takes it, quickly greeting Uncle Donald. “Hello? Oh, it’s you! I thought these boys looked familiar.”
The boys exchange a look. Louie’s suspicions ease a little, because Uncle Donald doesn’t have many friends, so if he knows this guy, it’s probably okay to stand here with him. He doesn’t seem mad, either, which is always a good sign. Uncle Donald’s lost more jobs than he’s kept and the boys get into trouble everywhere they go, so it’s… not often that they meet someone friendly who knows them.
Besides, Uncle Donald’s told them a dozen times to stay where they are if they ever get lost. Louie figures this will turn out okay.
“It’s okay, really! Kids will be kids.” The stranger is still smiling, but looking down the street now. “We can meet up at the Hamburger Hippo just off the bridge, and I’ll—I’ll buy their dinner tonight, if that’s okay with you!”
“Ooh, Hamburger Hippo!” Dewey says excitedly, and the stranger winks at him. He gestures down the street to a neon hippo sign, nodding as Uncle Donald tells him something.
“Hey, it’ll be my treat.” They start walking, and Dewey holds the second umbrella to cover himself and their newfound friend. “Don’t worry about it. We can just call it—we can call it free babysitting, okay? Take your time.”
“Wow, this guy’s kinda cool,” Louie whispers to Huey. “I can’t believe they know each other.”
“Yeah,” Huey grins. “Uncle Donald doesn’t know anybody that’s cool.”
It’s not a long walk to the Hamburger Hippo, and by the time they get there, the rain eases up. The boys sit together on one side of a booth, and their new friend takes the other. He buys them whatever they want for dinner and even—after making them promise to keep it a secret—ice cream afterward, while they wait for Uncle Donald.
He tells them how they met in school, how Donald used to play guitar and sing terribly but he still went to every show. How he used to talk about music the way Huey talks about woodchuck stuff and how he always had something witty to say the way Louie does. He tells them how they took acting and singing lessons together, and how he’s become an actor and Donald was once in a band. He tells them stories and makes them laugh for what feels like hours, and they soon forget being worried about their adventure-gone-awry.
By the time Uncle Donald arrives, they’re all in a better mood, and they hurry out to give him hugs and pile in the car giggling as if they’ve just spent a day at Funzo’s. Louie watches Uncle Donald thank their newfound friend, and though he can’t hear what they’ve said, he can see the gratefulness from his seat in the car. Donald’s hands shake and he wipes at his eyes as if trying to keep from crying, but the young man just reaches for his hands to hold them steady, nodding and saying something clearly helpful. And If Louie notices the way Uncle Donald hugs him goodbye, tight and close as if they’ll never speak again, he doesn’t say anything. He knows some things are best left unsaid.
Besides, as Uncle Donald climbs back in the car, Huey and Dewey start chanting “Captain Lost, Captain Lost!” again, and Louie has more important things to focus on.

why can I only draw in math class
#like my best quality doodles are all in math class and i have no idea why#in semi-related news the textbook site isn’t working and i have homework due tomorrow oof#it was working when i was at school???#guess i can just try to finish it up during lunch or turn it in late#which means i only have art homework to do#dramon thoughts#anyway back to the doodles thing i’m doodling my dragon au designs again so maybe i’ll be able to make digital refs of the designs soon?#dragon au is honestly mostly the same except like. they can turn into dragons now cause dragons are cool. also some of the stuff with team#magic goes on a bit differently (lena turns to stone rather than getting stuck in the shadow realm and violet and webby aren’t able to save#her within the first day they meet it’s more of a long term sideplot) and there’ll probably be a bit more differences i just haven’t figured#out yet? like i’m trying to figure out a difference for the della plot (both her own and dewey’s investigation plot) but i haven’t#figured out what to change#cause the stuff i changed with the earlier mentioned stuff was just a natural result when considering the types of dragons they are or just#something that i thought like... should of happened (i don’t know i just don’t really like how lena’s death wasn’t addressed until the#episode they brought her back to life and i feel it’d be a bit cooler for violet and webby to have become good friends over a longer period#of time)#and i can’t really think of anything like that with the other plots? like maybe have huey and louie involved in the investigation earlier#but the whole thing with huey and louie learning dewey was researching their mom behind their back was good#oof sorry for ranting a bit in the tags that’s just kinda what i do i guess

Hey everyone! Finally get to post my piece for the memory of promises zine! check out the link here if you want to grab one of your own copies in the leftover sale! I was so happy to be able to join in on this zine, and I hope you guys enjoy all the work that went into it! (Also keep in mind this was written before MoM.)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Namine rubbed her temples and looked at the clock. Midnight already. DiZ was not going to like this. The next time he came into the white room would bring on some lecture or punishment of some kind. She had been working furiously all afternoon trying to get past this one section of memory, but there was something that was keeping her back. Her pulse began to race. She was feeling sick. The door to the white room opened and with a squeak, Namine ducked under the table, fearing the familiar stride of the man in red.
"It's okay, it's just me. You can come out now." A soft voice sounded in her ears. "You're safe. DiZ said he needed to run an errand and wouldn't be back for a couple of days."
Slowly looking up, Namine could see the outstretched hand of the only comfort she had in this lonely place. "Riku. You're back."
She took his offering and stood up. He hadn't let go of her hand just yet, blindfold still covering those beautiful blue green eyes he had. She was glad it stopped him from seeing things like her girlish blush. He was only offering his hand as a friend. Besides, it was wrong for her to want to be with him- nobodies weren't supposed to feel anything. So why did she?
"You're shaking." Riku stated simply. "Have you eaten anything today?"
So he could even feel the slight tremor in her hands. "No, not exactly."
"Do you want me to get something for you? I think there are some leftovers in the fridge."
"No, I'm alright. I have to get back to work." Namine tried to take her hand from his, but he held onto it all the tighter, leaning down a little to be at eye level with her.
"You were working when I left, and I can tell you haven't gotten any sleep. How are you expecting to take care of Sora when you can't take care of yourself?"
Right. Namine thought. He's just like DiZ. All he cares about is getting Sora restored. You're just a tool.
Still, she couldn't help but notice the way her breath caught in her throat as his blinded eyes sunk to meet her tired ones. Maybe she should take a small break. All of this stress was making her read too much into small gestures.
Namine simply nodded, and Riku left to warm her up some food. Sensing that going back to Sora's memories would be futile, she grabbed her sketch pad and turned it to the very last page. This was her secret page, covered in things she thought about. Mindless doodles she drew when she was waiting for the computer to check on Sora’s physical well-being.
The sketch pad was not necessary for her magic to work. She could rearrange memories- crush the hearts of her poor unsuspecting victims- without it. She used it though to help her concentrate. By visualizing the memories, she was able to make a more convincing edit or capture the feelings that were hiding beneath the surface. So many times she had drawn Sora, Riku and Kairi together. And sure there were strong feelings of both love and jealousy, but had she not had her sketch pad, she might have missed Sora's emotions of gratitude for two stalwart best friends, confusion about school topics they had recently studied, and hope that Kairi would want to go with him to the first school dance, even though he knew they would just go together and bail early to hang out on the play island like they always did whenever the school had some social.
"Here you go. It's nothing special, but it's better than nothing." Riku interrupted her thoughts with a plate of food.
With a gasp, Namine hurried to cover her sketch pad. Even though she knew he couldn't see it, he moved so gracefully that she sometimes wondered if he really was blind. Although those first couple of days made the mansion quite a bit louder with his cries of annoyance as he bumped into furniture. He even fell into the secret compartment that hid the computer lab, but luckily managed to land safely.
"Drawing something you don't want anyone to see?" Riku smirked.
"No!" Namine replied a bit sharper than she thought. "Maybe."
Riku laughed as he set their plates down and pulled a chair over. "I'm only kidding. You don't have to be working on Sora nonstop. If you want to take a moment for yourself, then do it."
"No, I need to be working on Sora. It was my fault he's like this in the first place. I want to keep my promise." Namine picked up the white plastic fork. For once would it hurt to have some color around here?
With a sigh, Riku held his hand out for her to hold. "We've been over this, Nam. What happened wasn't your fault. You were being used." Softly Riku muttered "you still are."
Namine looked at him for a moment and then looked down at her food. She picked at it for a few moments before softly sliding her hand in his and taking a couple of bites. She ate in a comfortable silence, simply feeling the pressure that came from the gentle touch. This sort of thing wasn't unusual for them. They could usually be found in silence with their hands connected. But the mountain of pressure from the recent block in memories and lack of self care was threatening to squish Namine with its enormous weight.
"How's the restoration going?" Riku asked.
Namine's stomach began to twist around itself. "I'm….not sure."
Riku squeezed her hand, urging her to explain. Namine sighed, unsure of how to continue. Would he get mad if she told the truth? He had slowly been becoming more like DiZ, after all. He used to be there with her when she was getting told off. These days, Riku was never usually in the white room for more than five minutes unless it was late at night.
"You remember what Sora's mom used to tell him all the time, right?"  Riku recalled.
"Never talk to strangers on the play island?"
Riku chuckled, remembering a secret promise. "A problem shared is a problem halved. If you tell me, it might relieve some of the pressure on you."
There was no avoiding it, not as long as he held her hand.
"It's just that, well-" Namine fumbled for the words. "There's been a bit of a roadblock. I've been doing my best to sort it out, tracing the connections, but it's like the memories slip away as soon as I think I have a grasp on them. I may have gone through half a notebook trying to find a solid piece."
There was a pause, as if Riku were considering what to say.
"I'll go get you a new notebook tomorrow, then. As for the memories, we'll get it figured out. You need to take a break, anyway."
"No!" Namine swallowed back further emotion. Maybe she really did need some sleep. She was being more irrational than she expected. "No, it's fine. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong."
"Don't say stuff like that. If there's anyone who can make this situation right, it's you. Please, just take a few hours to rest tomorrow, okay?" Riku squeezed her hand again.
"I don't really have a choice here, do I?" Namine sighed.
"You always have a choice. I'm just asking you as someone who cares a lot about you."
Someone who cares? Namine thought. She slowly nodded in reply. Maybe a break was exactly what she needed.
"Thank you, Riku."
One Year Later
Again Riku tried to beat Marluxia, and again he was defeated. He only had this last battle to finish, having started against the organization members he recognized or had personally fought against. Which, admittedly wasn't many, but after several attempts, he was down to the last. It frustrated him that he still wasn't quite used to the keyboard controls, and Sora's moves were much less based in strength and relied much more on magic. Riku had never been very good with magic, focusing on perfecting his cure and dark firaga spells instead of learning the large array of magic that his friends had mastered.
Some keyblade master I turned out to be. Riku thought, sitting back in his seat and folding his arms. I can't even stop my two best friends from leaving me again. This is just like back then…
His mind began to drift away with thoughts of Castle Oblivion and Twilight Town. He heard the door open and gentle footsteps move toward him.
"Hey Aerith. We can work on that scarf in a minute. I have to get some more ethers for data Sora first."
"I take it the fight didn't go well then?" A soft voice walked closer.
He closed his eyes and shook his head. Not Aerith.
"Hey Namine. How could you tell?"
Namine placed a hand on his shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze. "You're really tense. Besides, I could feel your frustration from a block away."
What anger and annoyance had once plagued Riku's mind had since washed away. All he could register was how reassuring Namine's hand on his shoulder felt. She smelled nice, too. A faint blush warmed his cheeks. Ever since Kairi had insisted on going to sleep and Terra had left for the dark realm with Aqua and Ven, Namine was the only person Riku shared everything with. She had heard him vent several times, and she had been helping Aerith teach him how to knit. It was her delicate fingers that had lead him through the steps of a cable.
"I guess I need a little bit of a break." Riku said with a sigh. "Wanna go get some ice cream or something?"
"Sure." Namine smiled, stepping back so he could get up and stretch. They began to talk as they walked to their usual ice cream shop.
Since Scrooge, Huey and Dewey had returned home, the ice cream shop had been manned by one of the local citizens. He usually gave Riku a discount, so Riku usually put some munny in the tip jar. It had become routine over the past year to go whenever Namine came to visit from Twilight Town.
"How is everything going with Roxas and Xion?" Riku asked, sitting down and unwrapping his fruit bar.
"Slow." Namine replied, taking a small lick from her chocolate cherry ice cream cone. She wanted to try all of the flavors, and this was the last one. "Not too bad, but I think I preferred the strawberry cheesecake the best."
"That was a flavor Kairi always liked." Riku smiled softly.
When he saw the way Namine looked for just the hair of a second, he realized that was probably the wrong thing to say. He inwardly cursed himself and his inability to be the suave guy all the girls had thought he was growing up. Kairi and Namine didn't get much of a chance to talk after she got her replica body, as Kairi had almost immediately asked to be put under. Riku wondered what it was like living inside a heart of pure light. Just like Castle Oblivion, she didn't talk about it much.
"We should get some for her when she wakes up." Namine continued to eat her cone. There was an uncomfortable silence for just a moment before Namine spoke up again. "Who were you fighting when I came in?"
"Marluxia. He was the head of the castle, right?"
Namine nodded.
"I never really got to meet him as I was down in the basement back then. I'm sorry you had to deal with a guy like him."
"It's alright. I...had some support. There was Sora and Donald and Goofy. And despite everything I did to him, there was your replica, too." Namine spoke slowly, choosing her words with care. "But don't feel bad. He made his decisions, like everyone else."
This time, it was Riku's turn to nod in agreement, taking a bite from his treat.
"After the data battles are all said and done, what happens next?" Namine asked softly.
"I...don't know. All I know is that I've been having these weird dreams lately."
"I wondered. You look tired." Namine grabbed on to Riku's hand, intertwining their fingers.
Maybe it was a reflex, maybe it was a force of habit, like how they used to sit back in the old mansion. Either way, the touch on its own was enough to pull Riku away from the dark thoughts that usually sat at the horizon of his mind. He squeezed her hand in response.
"Don't hesitate to call me if you ever need someone to talk to. I miss our little midnight chats." Namine admitted.
"I do too." Riku smiled softly. "They really helped clear my mind back then."
"A problem shared is a problem halved, remember?" Namine was glad she could actually see his eyes as she recalled back to his words that helped her through her time at the old mansion. "Care to share anything?"
Riku paused. He sighed before starting to speak. After he told her of the recurring dream he'd been having with the buildings and the feeling of being watched, he also admitted to the weight that had been pinned on his shoulders.
"I know it might sound silly, but I can't help but wonder if these dreams are connected to Sora somehow. I just wish I could understand it more." Riku finished his bar and set the popsicle stick on the bench beside him.
Namine had just finished her ice cream as well, wiping her face with the napkin. "Maybe it's time you take another journey."
"With the data battle still to fight and Kairi still asleep? I can't leave now."
"Maybe not now, but after the last battle is won." Namine gently pulled his hand close to her and began massaging it. "But that means I can't follow you. Will you be alright on your own? Maybe you can check Kairi's dreams."
"I...don't know. I haven't used my dream eater powers in a long time and the process is still kind of fuzzy for me." He could feel his muscles relax as she worked at his weary hand.
Doubt was rising in his chest. Maybe she was right. Who was he kidding? He wasn't ready for this kind of thing. He wasn't like Sora or Kairi who could follow their hearts at a moment's notice. He couldn't always feel the way it was trying to lead him.
But as he saw Namine patiently working on his hands, the stiff muscles being brought to relax against her fingers, a light shone through the storm of his doubt. How he hadn't realized it before was a mystery. Ever since they had met, she had been the light in the dark, just as he had provided shade for her in the brightest situations. As she finished the massage, she tenderly squeezed his hands, reassuring him that she was there and willing to help. Surely that was love.
He felt love for her, no question. But with Sora and Kairi gone and asleep, there never seemed to be a good moment to tell her what his heart really wanted to say.
"We...we should be getting back." Namine sighed. "Are you sure you're alright?"
"No, but then, I'm not really all that sure of anything anymore."
"If there's anything I know, it's that things will get better. We'll find Sora. I don't know how or when, but we will." Namine took his hand again, standing before him.
Namine took a quick breath and then leaned over, placing a quick kiss atop his head. Ordinarily, she wouldn't be able to reach, but since he was sitting down, she could offer a small token of her affection and confidence in his abilities.
She and Riku's faces filled with blush, although a smile tugged at her lips. Namine didn't have enough courage to kiss him on the lips like she had wanted to for so long, but this was safe. He couldn't spurn her for a harmless kiss to the head. After all, what was some reassurance between friends?
"Thank you, Namine." Riku had a hard time looking at this angel of a woman without his heartbeat increasing.
To think she was willing to be by his side after all this. He decided there and then that he would listen to his heart and tell her of his feelings...after they set everything right. Once Sora and Kairi were home and together, then they could sort out their own relationship. It would give him yet another reason to bring his best friend home.
He could still feel the kiss on his forehead, and it brought a genuine smile to his face. He stood up and began walking away from Merlin's house.
"Don't feel like you have to stop working on the data battles on my account. I just wanted to make sure you were doing alright." Namine stopped for a second.
"We can get back to those soon enough. I need a little longer before I get back into it." He took his trash and threw it into a nearby can. "There are some fountains that are really pretty this time of day nearby if you want to check them out with me."
A smile formed on Namine's lips. "I'd love to, Riku."

Ducktales: Terror of the Terra-Firmians!  (Lena Retrospective) (Commission by WeirdKev27): Launchpad Looses his Last Brain Cell and I Loose My Patience
Tumblr media
Welcome back Weblena Warriors to the second part of my look at everyone’s favorite Emo Teen Shadow Lesbian Duck... and probably the only one but hey, semantics, Shadow Into Light, which was made possible by viewers like you, the ultra humanite and a commission from WeirdKev27. Picking up where we left off, we have our first episode that has a different intended order than airing order.
As most of you probably remember, but some of you who joined later might not be aware of the broadcast order for the first half of season one is, in the academic sense, pretty fucked. It’s not Darkwing Duck’s entirely fucked by a web of badger spiders and a queen snake on top to make it some sort of train situation, but by just sorta airing whatever episodes they wanted to, Disney messed with the character balance so Huey got less focus, not that he got a ton of focus this season but still, as well as leaning into the episodes focusing more on the kids with less involvement from the adults which gave the wrong impression about the series. While it IS very focused on the triplets and webby, the show isn’t entirely about them, but as Frank has mentioned a few times, Disney Channel apparently has this WEIRD thing where they assume kids won’t like stories starring the adult characters.
Tumblr media
Yeah I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while. Mostly how it’s so dumb I could swear Pauly Shore was an exec at Disney Channel. And he might be I don’t know what he’s doing these days and i’d like to keep it that way. For starters, the Scooge comics, while barely published in the US these days, are still popular globally and have appealed to kids and adults for generations and are mostly focused on him, with the kids in a supporting role and Ducktales, you know the thing your directly remaking here, was also mostly about him with the triplets supporting, if a bit less than the comics. Most of the Disney Afternoon was about adult characters, with any kids in side roles in the main cast. And it comes off entirely hypocritical of them to say this when the MCU is easily marvel’s biggest cash cow at the moment, and marvel properties have appealed to both kids and adults, like the duck comics, for decades. And if it’s because the marvel cartoons weren’t doing well , I’ll let you in on a little secret: Those didn’t do well because they looked bland and from what I’ve seen of them felt kind of bland, though I haven’t seen enough to fully judge. Kids LIKE adult characters as much as kid characters, and also like teen characters despite not being teens. Focusing on either is valid and while I LIKED Disney’s youth starring shows I also want another X-Men cartoon before I turn 50, and I bet kids would like that too, with the last one only failing because you bailed on it because you were throwing a hissy fit over fox having the movie rights, and do not get me started on that. Point is this argument is horse shit and should stay in the stables.
So yeah I do think this episode came too soon and it’s placement effected it at the time and as such it dosen’t have the best rep with the fandom aside from the Lena bits and that includes me. The fact it was very early in the series and the characterizations hadn’t yet sunk in really hurt this episode in places but is it really that bad? Join me under the cut to find out
Tumblr media
We open at the movies! Which scrooge apparently hasn’t been too since the 1930′s or seen any on video despite Della existing and being really stubborn.
Tumblr media
A rant for another episode. But the kids just got out of a Mole Monster movie, along with Lena, Beakly and Launchpad. Their reactions are as follows: Lena, Webby and Dewey really enjoyed it, Huey found it unrealistic... says the boy whose uncle fought a dragon made of gold a month or two back but we’ll get to that, and Louie was bored and felt it didn’t have enough of the ultra violence, kids these days it’s not about the gore it’s about the tension. And Beakly.. is just pissed Lena tricked them into seeing this and said it was educational. And the more I think about it the more this sounds like BEAKLYS fault than Lena’s. BEAKLY is the one who likely bought the tickets, who saw it was likely an r or pg-13 and who as we’ve seen HAS A PHONE, and ulnike scrooge probably isn’t so stingy she wouldn’t spring for a smart phone, so she could’ve just googled it, or whatever bird related pun is in this version.. gandered it.. yeah let’s go with that, gandered it, and SEEEN it wasn’t appropriate or walked htem out of the theater and ate the cost if she was that bothered by it. Sitting through a Horror Movie you didn’t research, didn’t pull the kids out of and dind’t bother to even check the poster for or use basic common sense is YOUR fault. And this could’ve worked fine, had Lena talk the kids into begging for it or had launchpad take them and have Beakly find out after, having driven to pick them up as she didn’t trust launchpad to take them home. Instead it makes the former super spy look REALLY stupid and feels really out of character for a SPY to not to do research. And it wasn’t like they decided on this later, Bentina being a spy was part of the character’s backstory from day one and its made clear as early as episode 2 in both airing orders. This is just lazy writing to justify the episode and I expect better from this crew.
But an argument errupts between Huey and Webby over the Terra-Firmians, a hidden race of rock people living in Duckburg’s discontinued sewer system, allegedlys. So Lena suggest simply going down which gets a disapproving look from Beakly, despite you know this being their bread and butter, and the fact that if she had a problem with Scrooge not being involved.. she could just call him. Exploring fabled rock people is something he’d be into. I mean there’s a low profit margin but it also costs him almost nothing to walk to the theater or have launchpad swing around and pick him up. Just gas which given how much he pays for jet fuel isn’t a big ask. But Beakly soon gets distracted by Launchpad whose convinced the film is real and is attacking the poster a grim sign of things to come as while Beakly annoyed me in this one on rewatch, especially after realizing the above... Launchpad annoyed me both times and for VERY good reason we’ll get into. This provides a distraction and allows the trio to escape. Cue titles.
After the title sequence, our heroes head deeper underground, there’s too much panic in this town... I mean props to Donald for trying something new but he really needs to rethink his cologne choices. Sex Panther is just.. not a good smell on.. anyone.
So our heroes journey through the depths of the subway system, and we find out part of why Huey’s so skeptical, as he finds anything that isn’t in the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook to not exist, though the cracks in this already show as he’s added anything that does. We’ll get back to this later but as you can tell the basic dynamic for 24 minutes is Webby being a wholehearted True Believer and Huey being a Skeptical Sally. And Lena is just sorta “Eh gives me an excuse for shenanigans” about it. We also get a peak into webby’s mind as we see her notes .. which really just come off as Terra-Firmian fanfiction involving a war of succession between two sides, the terra’s and the firmies, something based on previous media, and also some doodles of a fictional candy called webby-dings and herself as a superhero, both things I want to see.
But yeah the first third of the episode is pretty simple, just them journeying, the occasional shift in the firmament, and it’s not bad, and there are a few great bits: Huey nerds out about rocks, and finds them way more interesting than a possible rock monster.
Tumblr media
Which leads to the best gag of the episode as when Huey tries to pick up a big sample Webby, annoyed at his hyperfixation on the JWG, asks him to ask his book for help.. which he does by reading it and actually manages to pick the large rock up. This is halted though when Lena screams.. though she really just did it to draw them to an abandoned subway car full of glomgold posters for glomgold products because of course a failed subway project has his name plastered over it. You can’t spell glomgold without failure.. the failure is silent. Glomgold is not.
The fun is interuptted though by a livid Beakly who had realized they were missing in an earlier scene, after telling the Manager that McDuck Industries would pay for the poster.. and then found out Launchpad also destroyed the toilets “They come up thorugh the sewers!”. Launchpad that’s CHUDS, Ninja Turtles and Rats who raised Ninja Turtles like their own sons, mole people dig or use old mineshafts. It’s basic mole science. Also Beakly really shouldn’t sweat it, I just assumed the city has had a runnig bill witht he company for “McDuck Family and Employee Related Accidents, Mayhem and Shenanigans”. I mean he’s had Gyro on his payroll for at least a decade and a half by the series start, Gyro has leveled whole sections of city in an afternoon more than most giant monsters. Of which several have destroyed Duckburg. It got better.
Point is she’s livid about them sneaking off with Lena pointing out their some sort of adventure family and Beakly.. saying she won’t see them again, or at least implying it hard. I’ll put a pin in this, as the train buckles and a bit of seismic, or rock men, activity means their stuck. So they divide into teams: Beakly will go try and unhook the train car from the busted cars so they can ride out, Launchpad will go try and fix it, and we get this lovely exxchange as a result
Launchpad: Cool never crashed a train before Beakly: Can’t you try driving it without crashing it? Launchpad: Wha?
His face in that scene is priceless. He takes Dewey along. More on that in a second. Webby, Huey and Louie are told to stay put with Beakly only bringing Lena along because she dosen’t trust her. So since we have three split plots for a second... let’s split up gang, starting with the most aggrivating, middling with what you all came here for and why this is part of the retrsopective, and ending with the plot that directly heads into the final part of the episode.
Launchpad and Dewey: GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Okay starting with the most infamous plot and easily the worst part of this episode, probably the worst plot in any Ducktales 2017 episode. That’s not hyperbole it’s really that bad and really pissed people off, as fans of the original launchpad felt they made him overly stupid. This is where the airing order’s a problem as putting an episode with a subplot where one of your characters is obnoxiously dumb right up front means they assume this is his charcter and not just one poorly written chapter in a very dumb but very loveable characters life, likely because the writers hadn’t figured out how to properly scale his stupidity with comptience.
So as a result we get a good 3-4 mintutes if not agonizingly more of Launchpad assuming something he saw in a fucking movie film was real. That.. that’s his actual plot. Need I remind you, he’s in his late 20′s early 30′s. He’s not much older than me. While other episodes have him as dim this one claims he CAN’T TELL FACT FROM FICTION.
Tumblr media
There are lines you have to keep with your characters to keep the audience from hating them. They crossed it about 80 times with this plot and make Launchpad into a gibbering dunderhead who can’t do anything right versus a regular dunderhead whose good at one or two things and loveable enough for us to like him and not care about his numerous safey violations and child endagerment charges. Thankfully this is the ONLY episode that gets this bad and they clearly learned from this, but it dosen’t make it any less of a tough sit.
Dewey spends most of the subplot with a look on his face that just screams that he’s as done with this bullshit as we are, as Launchpad assumes he’s a mole person and brought along a pipe to presumibly bludgeon him, because wanting to cave his best friends skull in over stupidity is a GREAT look> Thankfuly he does not. And when the lights come back on Launchpad.. assumes he’s a monster because of bright light, GAH, and locks him out before they end up outside and the plto resolves itself by Dewey pointing out by Launchpad’s utterly baffling logic that he could be a mole monster, so Launchpad.. assumes he is.
Tumblr media
The subplot’s later buttoned up as he claims “I love being a mole monster”, again diffrent subteranian creature launchpad, she says he’s not and my suffering is thankfully at an end. This plot just sucks, it’s bad, overly stupid and dosen’t work with an adult character. Someone like say Ed from Ed, Edd N Eddy, or someone who belivies in weird conspiracy stuff like Dale Gribble or Stan Pines. with either of them this plot would’ve been fucking great. I could buy it from Dale and it just comes off as his normal paranoid weirdness. With Launchpad it comes off like he seriously needs help because the episode frames it as if he can’t tell ficton from reality, and his splotlight episode later would directly contridct this and make this episode even more aggrivating, as he’s a fan of Darkwing Duck, and KNOWS it’s acted out by an actor, so why wouldn’t he get this? It’s just....
Tumblr media
It sucks, it sucks and I thankfully get to move on to a better subplot
Beakly and Lena: What You Are in the Dark
Beakly tells Lena she’ll never see Webby again after this.. then chastises her when she won’t help despite you know having just said she’s going to force their friendship apart, which Lena points out. She then gets mad at Lena making a sarcastic comment at her. Okay she’s lived with Louie for at least a week in airing order and a month or two in actual order. She has to be used to this by now. She’s insolent.. because you show her no respect, blame her for something that while sure she talked you into, you should’ve known better, and top it off by saying you want to keep her from the kids because they have bright futures and come from good familes and asks who rasied her and her face.. well.
Tumblr media
Yeah wheras Launchpad and Huey, more on that in a second, were hurt by this being some of their earliest big roles, Bentina wasn’t.. until later when we found out just HOW bad Magica is to Lena and how much she dosen’t care about her other than as a tool to use. At this point we didn’t know just how much Lena was playing webby, how much she was only manipulating her, and even with her heroic act here we didn’t know if she only saw Webby as her way to break free. The next episode makes it clear she dosen’t and genuinely does care, 100%, so in hindsight it makes Bentina come off as ghoulsih for horribly asssuming about a girl she dosen’t know, and even if she did know about Magica wouldn’t know the full story, just like us, and then BERATING her after already saying she’s going to rip her away from Webby, which itself is PRETTY bad as she’s the only friend the girl has and sh’es doing so on... talking them into a horror movie, which as I outlined was more Bentina’s fault than Lena’s, and leading the kids into a dangerous place whicha gain, Lena pointed out is something she lets Scrooge do. And trust me i know that she actually knows Scrooge, and we later find out, as we’ll cover next month, that she isn’t ware HOW dangerous things are with Scrooge. It dosen’t change the fact she knows they do dangerous stuff to a point and that Lena may just be acting out. It also dosen’t change the fact she drove three children, yes including launchpad, down here with her instead of sending them home with Launchpad.. granted that option isn’t the safest but it’s safer than taking her with them thena cting like it’s ALL lena’s fault when three of the children, again including launchpad, are down there because of HER. Not Lena, HER. I’m harder on her because she’s older, wiser and was “raised properly” apparently. Though given the way she treats a random teen off the street she again knows nothing about and dind’t bother to ask... it begs the question.
Tumblr media
IT’s a good question. I could see the classism coming from being raised in 40′s and 50′s britain, judging by the timeline.. but even then she’s seen the world, and while her nature is supscious, the classit bullshit makes no sense after presumibly working with, and later spymastering for, various agents of various backgrounds. How has she not dropped this in decades. Scrooge very clearly dropped the racisim and homophobia of his time, so it still stands  on her for not dropping this. And Lena’s hurt shows under hte mask for the first time, that beneath the snark and secrecy.. is just an abused teenager with nowhere else to go and no way out being bullied by an older woman whose cutting off the only light at the end of the tunnel nto for good reason but out of classist, overprotective mallice.  My issues, which to be fair probably were intentional in the episode but sitll are a bit overblown, aside we do get an absoluttley tremendous moment later as a car falls on top of Beakly.. and Magica, speaking once more urges Lena to leave her, let her die and let their plans progress. And while that iself is.. dumb, what if someone finds her or her corpse later, especially since Scrooge would likely perosnally want to retrive the body to give her a proper burial as she’s his only friend at this point, or the rest of the family questoin the story?, it fits Magica’s lack of foresight we see throughout the season. But Lena... saves her. While she later gives an explination, and a valid one at that, it’s clear from her expressoin, her actoins and how she does it... that this is her. Part of it is defiance, as she glares at Magica before doing it, her own stubborn nature mixed with her hatred of her “aunt”, meaning Magica just made it all too easy for her to do this. But the real reason is clear: It’s the right thing to do. While pissing off her aunt and getting away with it is the cherry on top.. the real reason is that unlike Magica.. Lena is not a killer, not a monster, and not a heartless vacum ofa person. Even if she doesn’t like Beakly, for good reason.. she can’t, she WON’T leave her to die and leave Webby an orphan again. She loves Webby too much to do that to her and while she may deny it.. she’s too good a person to leave someone to die for something so petty. Even if she never sees webby again and the plans ruined. It’s better than the weight of knowing she let someone who wasn’t trying to harm her and whose actions, while terrible, were out of misguided protection of her granddaughter, die like this. She saves her. And as we’ll see it pays off.. but before that.
Huey, Webby and Louie: Into the Unknown This plot’s a bit shorter, as Webby and Huey continue their argument, with Louie eventually making it clear, and not even hiding it when directly asked by Huey, that he’s playing both sides with a delighted expression on his face as the movie was boring but this, this is interesting. Which it is. But it’s interupted by dings on the roof and while Huey assumes i’ts just a regular rock, it moves while their not lookiung.. and soon red eyed, horrifying beasts look out at them and the kids flee back to the car. This dosen’t pan out as the car starts to shake and is clearly going to collapse.. and while Webby and Louie are prepared to flee, rock monsters or no, Huey, in an utterly heart shattering image.. stays in place, terrified of moving.
This is where this plot goes from mildly aggrivating, as Huey’s Skeptic shenanigans can get on the nerves.. to BRILLIANT. See at the time this was more annoying because it was assumed the skepticsim would be a part of Huey’s character and we’d get more episodes of him being annoying only to be proven wrong, as he semeingly dosen’t learn his lesson at this point, looging the terrafrimians in the guide book. But on rewatch.. this plot is amazing.  For starters the plot subtly introduced the defening characteristic of Huey’s personality, one that’s become more prounounced in Season 3: His need for Order. He needs things to make sense: He solves stuff because he likes there to be order in the world and something he can understand, he can put in a box in his head. Like a lot of neurotypical people, myself included, he struggles horribly when the clearly defined boxes of his life and things he undestand have wrinkles or complexities he can’t get. I for instnace easily got it when I was introduced to the concept of trans people or being non binary.. they just make sense in hindsight: given how our brains are messya nd complicated it makes sense some people would be born in the wrong ones, and tht with all the science and medicine we have to correct that, should be allowed to transition if they so choose. It makes equal sense that some people just don’t have a gender or are gender fluid, being both or neither. Despite struggling with non binary prounouns due to force of habit.. I get the concept with no real difficulty. But when it comes to accepting I don’t have to apologize for everything and that everyone is not angry or that anger is natural and people sometimes get mad and you can’t and shouldnt’ fix it.. it’s something I STRUGGLE with even knowing it’s not right, because my brain is just wired that way.
That’s how Huey’s struggle comes off here.. he reveals he’s willing to stay and die.. because he’s SO scared of the unknown, that the idea of dying from something he at least knows what it is versus something he dosen’t.., so paralizyed by his own brain he can’t figure out the obvious.. it takes Webby reaching out to him figuratively and literally, to show him that sometimes you have to face the unknown. The unknown is fucking terrifying.. but it can be good and it’s better than sitting there, scared and unable to move. You have to try, to grow and take that risk that things may not go well to really LIVE.
So he does.. and they reunite with the rest of the group.. and soon find the terrafirmains.. who as it turns out once we get some light on them... are actually just goofy looking,  brightly colored, each one matching one of the kids, kids themselves, and Huey reaches out and touches one, which by ET logic means their friends now, and the terrafirmians help them get out. And this lesson sticks. While sure Huey catalogues it and it seems it didn’t.. he’s never this skeptical again. This douchey skepticsim was only for one episode, his fear of the uknown replcaed with boundless curosity and from here on he’s CURIOUS about new stuff as long as it’s not trying to kill him. He loves taking in new experinces, maybe not to webby levels but he does actually try them and study them instead of just fearing them.
Before we wrap things up, obviously we need to talk about the JWG not having entries on a lot of stuff. This would be corrected next season as it returns to being a big book of everything, but dosen’t completely contridct this as Timephoon! shows there’s stillcgaps.. which i’m fine with. While it knowing EVERYTHING was fine for the original series here, with things being slightly more groudned, it’d just be an obvious plothole if Huey didn’t use it every single time they ran into something and that’d get boring. Instead it’s simply that it dosen’t know everything, and really in the comics at times it didn’t and the triplets found out new things. It knew almost everything mind you, but having some gaps for dramatic tnesion is fine with me and Seasons 2 and 3 decided on that instead of just having it being a scouting manual which wa sfor the best. And even by later in the season hit has guides to getting a small buisness loan, so they already course corrected.
So everything’s wrapped up and while Magica berates Lena for disobeying her.. Beakly interputps, thankfully not seeing magica and admits she was wrong and invites Lena for pancakes, even taking a crack about if their actually pancakes or english muffins with syrup, which sounds like my own living hell, in stride, having clearly grown. And Lena explains to Magica that this was the better approach: now she’s got the in theyw anted, and is above suspcison for now. Still not so much that an obvious act won’t be detected but enough that she dosen’t ahve to work actively around her anymore. Magica scoffs.. and while part of it is probably rage.. part of it is deep down both of them know she did it out of defiance.. and only Lena knows that she did it for the right reasons... she just dosen’t get why. She probably justifies it as playing the long game.. but deep down she knows something’s changing about her.. and she’s not sure if that’s a godo thing or not.
Final Thoughts: This episode is as you can tell a mixed bag. It’s 2/3 of a good episode, with the Lena plot, my issues aside, being excellent and the Terra-Firmian plot likewise fun, even if Huey can get grating the payoff is worth it, and the jokes are really high quality. It’s just bogged down by that fucking launchpad plot that just crushed my soul in it’s palms every time it came back. I went on at length why i hated that one but boy oh boy was the hate of that subplot warranted and I stand by calling it the worst plot of the series. It is: it’s not funny, it makes no goddamn sense, and it drags down what’s otherwise a pretty solid epsiode.
Next Time on Lena: Jaws the shark, lurking in the dark, in the depths of the bin one day of a lark decides to get rowdy, get real violent takes a vacay out to Duckburg er.. Island.. also Scrooge faces his greatest Nemesis.. a PR Tour to clean up his image after an unfortunate giant Beanstalk Incident. Be there and be hip to be square.
Next Time on This Blog: I Tackle a DCOM for the first time for another commissioned review as we take a look at racisim, specifically Apartheid and breaking indoctrination, with The Color of Friendship. See you next Rainbow.

a whole mess of ducktales monster au doodles from the past month or so! it’s a monster falls-style deal, a fake episode sort of scenario where the gang gets turned into monsters because of..some curse or something. check under the cut for details!
this post has most of the designs ive done so far. here’s what everybody is:
for the triplets i wanted to go with some sort of theme that let them be different creatures but still unified in some way (and have simple and fun to draw designs), and half-human monsters from greek myth ended up being that theme. huey’s an icthyocentaur, dewey’s a satyr/faun, and louie’s a harpy. louie’s design is based on the harpies in storkules in duckburg
i was originally going to go with a supernatural/ghosty/undead theme for team magic but the idea of unicorn centaur webby was just TOO GOOD. lena’s a ghost, which is kind of an obvious choice, but oh well. i still haven’t figured out one for violet yet, but she’ll be coming soon enough.
scrooge is a dragon! this is directly inspired by this awesome au. his was the first design i figured out.
the second design i figured out was fenton’s! nd his is my favorite concept of all of them. he’s like, frankenstein’s monster, if frankenstein’s monster was half cyborg and also sort of dr. frankenstein too. also the cyborg parts are like the gizmoduck armor. it’s really fun. tache noire is a neat red pattern that appears across the eyes after death in some cases, because frankensteins monster. also don’t google it if you don’t want to see actual real dead people eyes.
okay so launchpad and drake- i assigned these two werewolf and vampire respectively way before i watched the darkwing duck episode monsters r us (which in case you havent seen, turns launchpad into a vampire and darkwing into a werewolf. and gosalyn into a frankenstein. it’s a really fun episode.) but as funny as launchbat and darkwolf dog are i’m stickin to my guns here. i just love werewolf launchpad too much and drake’s theatrics and Whole Entire DW Aesthetic are so very vampire imo
i think for this photoset that just leaves fethry, who is a mermaid, and his bottom half is a krill. this is what he was always meant to be
that’s pretty much all of the ones ive figured out. characters i still need to work on include violet, della, donald, gyro, and gosalyn. though i’ll probably wait til her debut in s3 for gos. thanks for reading! i love monster aus so goddamn much

So I had this [bad] idea for a Ducktales au of some sort: Now Anastasia is a meh movie to me, it’s ok but not something I would watch over again if given the choice. But I cannot express how much I love the soundtrack! So Dickie is Anya and Goldie is the Empress (Anya’s grandmother), and Dickie somehow got separated from Goldie young. (I’m going to continue where I’m going with this in another ask)
Continued: It begins with A Rumor in St. Petersburg but with slightly altered lyrics and it’s A Rumor in Duckburg about how Goldie’s long lost granddaughter may still be alive. I can’t decide whether or not Dickie would have amnesia, but she still sings Once Upon A December recalling faded childhood memories. Then she leaves wherever she is as she sings Journey to the Past. Dickie soon meets Louie, a charming con-artist who helps Dickie reunite with Goldie (but minus the Anya x Dimitri romance plot because that would be weird) This was also an idea I’m getting at 1:50 am too, so I haven’t thought everything trough either, but I guess Merlock could be Rasputin.
OK so first when you sent this i immediately imagined Magica as Rasputin and i doodled some fun stuff here lol (also im not gonna draw this BUT negaduck would also make an amazing rasputin)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THEN you sent this:
(This is the same Anastasia au anon) I love musicals, and I kept putting off listening to Anastasia because I haven’t had the time. But I just listened to the whole soundtrack and WOW! I love it! So now I’m thinking Vlad is Gladstone (Vlad = Glad), Magica is Lilly, and either Gyro or Poe Despell is Gleb. (Bonus: Dickie now sings the words “Meet the royal… mess”, and that seems very fitting) | I hate to kill beloved characters but Im doing it anyway. Scrooge is the deceased husband of Goldie, and who the bridge is named after, Della and Donald were killed in the execution, and Della’s unhatched triplets were assumed to be dead as well. In the end, however, it turns out that someone saved the eggs and that Dickie wasn’t the only long-lost McDuck, Louie is too (I’m probably going way too deep into this au, and I apologize for sending so many asks about it) | (I promise this is the last ask about the Anastasia au) I’m changing the end of the musical to better suit the au. In the end, Louie, Dickie, and Goldie set out on an adventure to find Huey and Dewey, or something like that.
SO no one really feels like Gleb but i still drew gyro as gleb anyway gweniopgweb but ANYWAY, this is a very fun AU i love it. i used the comic designs for these ones cuz magicstone as lilly/vlad feels better with their comic versions. the lilly/vlad song in the musical really makes me think of reboot!scroldie but yknow theres lots of good stuff here so heres more doodles

Persona: A Brief Guide
No, this isn’t the wrong blog. As I said a few days ago, my NaNoWriMo project this year is a massive Ducktales/Persona AU that I started thinking about as a joke and it turned into a multi-spreadsheet world with full character backgrounds, lore, history, and 45-ish chapters outlined. Yeah, I tend to go a little crazy when something gets my attention.
But of course, this is a Ducktales blog, so wtf is Persona? You don’t have to have played the games or seen the show to understand what I’m writing, but there are some details that might make a little more sense with the context of both worlds so, here we go!
(Note:  I’ve only played 4 and 5 (I own a digital copy of 3 but I have to re-download it...), and 4 is by far my favorite, so I’ll be referencing those mostly, but the details are pretty much the same across games, just with different buzz words.)
Persona is a pretty typical Japanese-style RPG, with you, the nameless MC, living a double life as a high school student and going into another world to fight demons and solve some kind of mystery or problem along the way. That world is called different things -- in 4, it’s The Midnight Channel or the TV World because you literally go through TV screens to get to it. In 5, it’s the Cognitive World or the Metaverse. The big theme in both games is humanity + its desire to be free vs. the desire to just have someone direct our entire lives because it’s easier, and how the collective thoughts and feelings of humans affect the Other world. You and your scrappy team of outcast rebels go into that world through whatever means, and try to fix the problems in that world, which have a direct effect on the real world.
Personas are the physical manifestation of you and your team members, summoned by facing and accepting different aspects of yourself. The demons you fight are shadows (I’m not making that up, I swear, it’s part of what made the story so adaptable to Ducktales lmao), which are the darker subconscious thoughts of humanity, manifested and let loose with no one to control them. All Personas and Shadows are categorized by the major Arcana -- the main 22 cards in a tarot deck. That’s a whole thing I could dedicate a post to by itself, but here’s the list of major arcana if you’re curious.
P4 plays heavily on the tarot theme - the characters summon their Personas through cards.
Tumblr media
P5 goes a slightly different route - Personas are masks which the characters hide behind, and the first time most characters summon their persona is a little... graphic. Basically they rip their masks off their face to reveal their true selves, except the mask is like.... fused with their skin. Which is still not as bad as P3, but I’m not getting into that.
And yes, this is the shortest explanation I can give about the games. There are a thousand smaller details I could get into if I had the time, but none of them really apply to the story I’m telling. I just think the tarot card aspect, especially in P4, is really cool.
The details that matter:
The existence of the Other world, which is, of course, the Shadow Realm in my story. That part basically writes itself.
Shadows. They’re such a major theme in Persona and Ducktales, how could I not make that connection.
Personas. My scrappy little team, of course, is Team Magic and Team Brothers, who all get their own Personas eventually. Their Personas, when not in use, revert back to the form of a coin (a nod toward Scrooge’s number one dime), with the symbol of their Arcana on it. This isn’t really a spoiler so I don’t mind sharing it. Each character’s Arcana is:
Huey: Chariot Dewey: Fool Louie: Fortune Webby: Justice Violet: Magician Lena: Death
If I ever get really ambitious maybe I’ll doodle up some coins with the individual symbols but for now, here’s the Persona Wiki page regarding Arcana. And no, none of these are meant to be an insult -- I can easily see how Dewey being Fool or Lena being Death can come off as insulting, but each one serves a purpose, and it’s not just to make fun of Dewey for being an idiot (which he’s not) or to make Lena seem like a bad person (because she’s not). I’m not entirely sure how deep into the Arcana stuff I’m going to get, but I think it’s important to understand that none of the choices I’ve made for the characters are meant to be a comment on their personalities or who they are. Believe it or not, I put a lot of thought into what each person would be (Huey changed like four times and Louie was definitely something else before Fortune. On the other hand, Violet as Magician was always a no-brainer. Webby was Empress for a bit before I decided Justice served her better. Like I said, a lot of thought).
Another thing you might notice if you go to look at Persona on your own is that the characters all have melee weapons. That’ll be come into play to a point in my story -- they’re slightly more realistic than a freaking katana or the gun one of the P4 characters uses to shoot their card. These games are fucking wild.
In Conclusion:
Other World = Shadow Realm Shadows = Shadows Scrappy Team = Team Magic/Team Brothers Mystery In Need Of Solving = ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That is a spoiler and a twist I can’t wait to get into.
You can see why I had a lot of fun planning this. If you have any more questions, please ask me, I love talking about this AU -- but of course, no spoilers ;) Just hit my inbox!

Ducktales Roleswap AU
I have an analysis post in my drafts abt how Violet, Webby, and Lena parallel Huey, Dewey, and Louie and I was thinking about an AU where they swapped and it turned into this big thing so enjoy
I don’t think this AU has a concise story, since it mostly follows canon, but I might write some oneshots and I have a few doodles in sketch phase! so prepare to see some of those soon (or in a month when i get back from camp lol)
Della Duck is a single mother to her three lovely nieces, Violet, Webby, and Lena.
They’re her brother Donald’s kids, but he disappeared ten years ago (more on that later) and she was saddled with them. She doesn’t mind too much though. She loves them.
When Della was a child/young adult, she went on adventures with Donald and her aunt Goldie, the richest duck in the world, who raised them when their parents died. But when Donald disappeared due to an adventure, everything he had always said about being careful and adventure being dangerous suddenly set in for Della. Out of grief, she cut off communication with her aunt and stopped piloting. It hurt.
Della raised her girls on her old plane converted into a house, because she didn’t have money to buy a house but didn’t have the heart to sell it.
Violet joined the Junior Woodchucks (Little Chickadees?) at Della’s insistence. Della wanted her daughter niece to do something other than read sometimes. Violet was hesitant, but she ended up enjoying it and she quotes the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook all the time, to the annoyance of her family
The only person who’s more loyal to the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook than she is, a legend among the Junior Woodchucks, is some guy named Huey Sabrewing. Violet has never met him, but he ends up coming to her Aunt Goldie’s mansion around a year(?) later to hang out with her new brother Dewey.
Dewey Duckworth is the grandson of Goldie’s spy-turned-housekeeper, Duckworth. He’s lived in Goldie’s mansion his entire life. He idolizes Goldie, but she’s never paid much attention to him. Not until her nieces move in.
Thinking of making a similar AU or an AU-of-an-AU where Louie is the one who lives in Goldie’s mansion. It makes more sense for Louie to idolize her than Dewey, but Dewey is Webby’s parallel and I’ve already fallen in love with spy-in-training Dewey, so I’m not changing it for this AU.
Goldie’s butler, another former spy, Bentina Beakley, died years ago, but when the girls throw an unwanted party for Goldie’s birthday, one of Flintheart Glomgold’s (or Ma Beagle’s, I haven’t quite worked out if I’m gonna swap Glomgold and Ma or leave Ma and swap Glomgold and Beaks) daughters accidentally summons her back.
Dewey has never technically left O’Gilt Mansion (name pending until I can think of something cooler), but shhhhh he sneaks out all the time. he still doesn’t have great social skills though.
Louie McDuck/De Spell (haven’t decided if I want Scrooge, Magica, & Goldie to have a three way swap or not) is a secret shadow disguised as a teenage boy. He meets Dewey Duckworth one night when his sisters have gone on a boating trip, but his aunt/uncle has sinister plans for Goldie and her family.
I haven’t thought of anyone to swap Launchpad with, but LP and Dewey are best friends in canon so I think it works for Launchpad to hang out with Dewey when he has no one else.
Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera is one of Goldie’s most trusted scientists, but his excitable and rambling nature makes some others dislike him. Most of his inventions go crazy. The only one to not is the Gizmosuit, worn by Gizmoduck, aka his intern, Gyro Gearloose. Gyro doesn’t like his overbearing boss much, but Fenton tries his best. He’s irked that Gyro gets the Gizmosuit though, Fenton is always trying to help people and Gyro never seems to care.
Before she reached out to Goldie, Della kept in contact with her cousin Fethry. Her other cousin Gladstone shut himself up in a casino, cashing in on his luck. Early in the kids’ adventuring career, they had to save Fethry from a giant krill. Violet and Webby visited Gladstone some time later and toured his casino, but his giant lucky frog broke the casino and Gladstone and the frog vanished into the night.
If I don’t swap Scrooge and Magica, Scrooge is a fellow old adventurer who Goldie meets at a museum gallery. Goldie likes doing the tricky thing, and Scrooge is always lecturing her for it. Scrooge is reckless and lonely, and jealous of the close bond Goldie has with her family. The girls ship them.
If I do, Scrooge is basically the Scrooge from @toxikkublogs‘s Switched AU (which I’m just now realizing has the same basic premise but isn’t as wide-scale, sorry :P I didn’t mean to copy ya)
When Scrooge/Magica attacks Goldie, Louie tries to save the fam. Goldie promises him a place in her family, and he tries to save Dewey but gets stuck as a shadow until Huey and Dewey bring him back.
Webby is really curious to know what happened to her dad. She asks to see Dewey’s records of him and they make a board.
They derail the plane to Ithaquack, where they meet Donald’s old, enthusiastic friend, the god of the moon (yes I know this isn’t mythologically accurate), Storkules. However, when Storkules learns Donald disappeared, he retreats into the temple and leaves Zeus (or whoever I swap Zeus with) and his daughter Selene to keep them company. Selene and Della are delighted to see each other, but Zeus and Goldie are less than happy. Goldie stole some of Zeus’ famed treasures as well as what Scrooge did in canon. Dewey and Webby sneak off to find Storkules and ask about Donald.
Selene comes to Duckberg later, but she actually ends up being roommates with Della because they get along better than Storkules and Donald.
When Duckworth gets kidnapped by his old nemesis Ludwig Von Drake, Goldie and Dewey team up to save him. The episode has flashbacks to Goldie’s first mission with Duckworth at Shush, featuring the director of Shush, Black Heron.
I dunno if I should swap Gandra and Zan or Gandra and Manny, what do you guys think? Neither of them are the best fits but they both work, sorta.
I’m also unsure of what to do for Donald’s disappearance. I might make it so he took a boat instead, but then I’m not sure where to put him and the Moonlanders. Or maybe he pushed Della out of the Spear of Selene (Spear of Storkules?) and still ended up on the moon. Not sure.
I’ll keep working on this instead of studying for finals :P
