When I first started to watch baseball he was our pitcher and quickly became my favourite player. Devastated about his death💔 one of the best to ever wear the jersey
Absolutely heartbreaking that Tim Wakefield passed today. He was a great pitcher with the Red Sox and I enjoyed his time on NESN. He was also just an amazing person. I feel for his family at this time.
I don't watch or follow or really pay attention in any way to baseball anymore, and I don't necessarily miss it from day to day.
But the news yesterday that Tim Wakefield had died really hurt, and it continues to hurt. He was 57, and by all accounts, he didn't deserve that fate.
I don't really have another obituary in me, so I went and looked to see what I'd written about him in the past. And I found this, from a game he entered in the seventh inning of a blowout to a standing ovation from the Fenway Park crowd, back when I'd drive up from New Bedford, in his second-to-last season:
In comes Tim Wakefield, and as soon as he starts running in from the right field bullpen, the fans start to react. They start cheering. And now they’re standing. And now, down 11-5, Fenway Park is screaming as Wakefield is announced as the new pitcher. Perched in a standing-room-only section above the grandstand on the first-base line, it was a sight to see. …
But in 16 years, he’s given the Sox much more than they could’ve dreamed when they signed him to that minor league deal after a year with the AAA Buffalo Bisons. He was a key contributor to two World Series winners, a number of playoff teams, and famously sacrificed his 2004 ALCS start in order to save the bullpen in the 19-8 loss to the Yankees in Game 3. He’s had flops, he’s had gems. He’s been durable, he’s defied age, and he’s consistently taken less money on the open market to stay in town. I don’t think there’s any more he could have possibly done for Boston in his time here.
Seeing a standing ovation burst from a tired crowd in a loss as Wakefield entered made me absurdly happy. It was this fan base at their best, showing appreciation for a lifetime of work. I can only guess how it made him feel.
57 is just way too young and this man was such a lovely human being. Damn cancer!!!
His work for the Jimmy Fund was so selfless…so much more than most knew because he did so much behind the scenes. He wasn’t interested in the accolades…he just wanted to put a smile on the faces of the children suffering from cancer.
His selflessness didn’t stop there. Was he the greatest player…no but he gave you everything. What ever was best for the team…just watch this video below when Wake took himself off the roster during the World Series.

RIP Wake!! You will always have a special place in Red Sox Nation’s heart!!
Thoughts and prayers for his wife and children. It was announced this week that not only was Tim battling cancer but so is his wife.
My heart just breaks for their children, dealing with one parent with a serious illness is hard but both parents at the same time is unimaginable.
