Why do some bird species seem to flourish alongside humans, eating our crumbs and nesting in our backyards, while others prefer to live as far as possible from dense human populations?
Researcher Monte Neate-Clegg first began to ponder that question while attending the American Ornithological Society’s 2019 conference in Anchorage, Alaska. “I was staying at an Airbnb, and two of the birds I wanted to see in Anchorage, white-winged crossbills and boreal chickadees, were just in the yard,” says Neate-Clegg, then a Ph.D. student at the University of Utah. Although new and beautiful to him, the species are common in Anchorage — so omnipresent they’re typically ignored by residents.
“I started thinking, what is it that makes these ‘trash birds’ here, and not elsewhere?”
Neate-Clegg sounds sheepish about using the pejorative-sounding term “trash bird,” but it’s a phrase commonly used by birdwatchers to refer to species so ubiquitous at a given location that they cease to become interesting and, in fact, can become downright irritating. Classic examples include pigeons in city centers and snack-stealing gulls on beaches.
But one man’s trash bird is another’s research query. Neate-Clegg wondered if specific traits make certain species more able to thrive in cities around the world. And after joining ornithologist Morgan Tingley’s lab at UCLA as a postdoctoral researcher in 2021, he proposed a lab-wide project to try to answer his question.
Their research drew on big data to provide some clues — and may even reveal a roadmap for making our cities more bird-friendly.
...
Ultimately the members of the Tingley lab examined traits underlying the urban tolerance for 3,768 bird species in 137 cities. They found that urban-tolerant birds tend to be smaller, less territorial, longer-lived, and less picky about their diets and habitats than other species. They also have greater dispersal ability — they move more easily from one place to another — and lay larger clutches of eggs.

I wandered through the empty corridors while most everyone left was asleep. I like this place called the bunker, I explore unimpeded, many hidden nooks and crannies for me to discover.
Some rooms have much information accumulated by The Men of Letters, I sit in them undisturbed reading for long time.
Bobby found me years ago. I had been in outlands for so long I no longer knew what year it was. He took me back to his encampment, so overwhelming, people; tomuchmuchness.
Someone called Charlie identify me as Y/N. I was a engineer of whatever, say I was smart person before Luciferdemons did experimentations early days of war, I got experimentations ‘cause I have abilities.
I scare people, think I’m strange, damaged. I figured out who the strongest feeling hurt me, no contact with them. People in camp find me in weird places, sleep wherever I am. Bobby say I remind him of a rechargeable battery; charged, runs, depletes, charging mode, repeat.
Man has strange humor.
***
The very tall man with damage, beautiful soul sometimes comes in the rooms looking for something written. He sit in roomlibrary a lot, not know I watched him. One night he catch me.
He was surprised spotting me at the edge of the rooms. He awkward wave with dorky smile. I liked it. He starts talking to me, say he called Sam. I love his voice, soft and rough and soothing.
I feel he like me keeping him company, he has empty spot inside, lost, sad. I start coming to roomlibrary when he here at night for months, sitting on floor by stairs listening to him talk to me, explaining what he is researching. I start help, surprise, impressed him I know where find written information he look for that he not archived yet is.
He asking me questions, not lot but more with time together. But I no can answer him, my voice taken by Luciferdemons. He try to get me type on lapmachine but I can’t get hands to move with thoughts.
I show him my way of communicating. Take time but he able to learn it. He show me other hand language he know some of. We cobble together new language make easy for others understand me.
Sam starts bringing foods like he eats when together in roomlibrary working, apologizing sorry he can’t cook much but I smile, show I like it.
***
One day he tell me Bobby leave bunker with MaryMom. I sad, Bobby only one who didn’t fear me, treat me normal. Till Sam.
Sam takes me to kitchen, shows where food to eats is for when he leaves. He tells me I can have all I want, worries that I not eat enough. I pointed at his mouth then his stomach. He make me promise to eat more if I will too.
I get sad when he goes then he back, sometimes hurt. I bring him food, say should rest but he stubbornly back in room library say he can’t, has to help others. BrotherDean also get upset with him, fussed like motherchicken. BrotherDean tolerate me because Sam like me, help feel better, happy when with me, but not trust. Sam say he takes long time.
***
After last leaving, Sam really hurting. I march in roomlibrary took lapmachine away, shock him. I take his hand and pull stubbornly, Sam lot bigger, till him follow me to his resting room. I find his sleepcloths and start taking off his daycloths. He stop me, try to leave. I get mad, refuse let him go, block door. He says he could easily pick my up to move, I brace handsfeet on doorways frame like spider in web.
Sam laughs, gives, gestures to turn around and changes. I climbing into bed next to him. He ask me what I’m doing. I tell him I not trust he stay, rest, so I stay, make sure he does. He happy when I still there in morning. Sam gets another pillow for bed, says I can stay in his rest room when he goes too. He show me how to use Netflixmovietv.
One night we watching old movie when I have memories, sitting in front of huge picturescreen watching it. He gets excited, said that good thing, maybe more associates help me remember more stuff.
GoodangelCastiel help fix him and BrotherDean lots. Sam ask if GoodangelCastiel see if he fix me. I avoid him all times, angels bad in other world but Sam say he stay with me. Sam not let go of hand whole time, help not be scared. GoodangelCastiel touched my head, it felt overwarm and not good tingley. He finish, apologize sorry, nothing he can do to help me, damage done to old, too severe for him to fix. I thank him for looking, had accept long ago never be normal again.
Sam is upset not able to help. Sam tell me he knows what it like be hurt by not humans, to not be like others, how he hides his issues. He tell me about LuciferCage, I tell about Luciferdemons. Sam say funny, not humorous funny, how that part of lives similar. I say that maybe that what draw us together, we know, understand others' pain.
***
Sam hurt bad, heartbroken.
MaryMom dead. NephilimJackKline do, he not felt right, empty after killing BadMichael. LuciferNick gone now too. Sam relieved.
BrotherDean keep going, say town but come back more in pain.
Sam to quiet, hurting but won’t say. I lay down next to him resting my head against his shoulder trying to comfort him. He wraps arms around me hold tight as he cry. He calms, eventually explains that he never knew MaryMom, she die first time when he baby. They have hard times after she comes back, not bonded like with BrotherDean, many mistakes but he was happy she was in life.
I tell him he fortunate to have know her, even with hard memories. Sam expressions change, soften and he kiss me. I freeze and he pull away, apologize sorry, don't know why he did it. I take plunge, kiss him back.
***
God gone nuts, acting like tantrum child, ending all worlds. WitchRowena died saving this world now Queen of Hell. BillieDeath says NephilimJackKline only one stop him, must do different tasks to become strong again.
Sam show me how to use moneycards Charlie give them years ago, make me promise if he not come back and God not destroy world leave bunker and start new life. Few years ago, I wouldn’t been able to do what he asks but his love and devotion help me heal, I make promise hoping I don’t have to keep it.
***
Five years later
St. George's Island, FL
The house was quiet when we got home. We had gone to celebrate BrotherDean’s birthday at his beach bar. We celebrated too much. He took off with his lady of the moment after closing the bar.
Sam follows me in shower, I can't stand the clinging smells of smoke and alcohol. He wants to fool around, I tease he is not sober enough, can’t follow through. Sam shows me he is defiantly up for that challenge.
I was snuggled down the bed reading the book I found when Sam rolled over and curled over me resting his damp head on my chest, blocking my view of the book. “Sam, you have a pillow.” I signed one handed pick pillow up with my other and dangled it over him to see.
He tipped his head back giving me a dopey grin, “Your my new pillow.”
I rolled my eyes, “You being silly, go to sleep.”
“Hokey dokey,” Sam says snuggling back on my chest making happy noises.
Sighing, I close my book, place it on the table and shut off the light. In the quiet I can hear Sam’s soft breathing telling me he’s asleep, feeling myself getting drowsy listening to him and the sound of the ocean waves softly rolling outside our open balcony doors.

Canvasback -- Male (Aythya valisineria); Albuquerque, NM, Tingley Beach Park [Lou Feltz] by deserttoad I have mainly distant shots of a male Canvasbacks in my files. Diving ducks are usually offshore some distance in the deeper water. With this species within acceptable camera range I took full advantage of this opportunity to flesh out my files. The "ski jump" head profile is ideal for IDing this species. In full breeding rigalia the head colors will be a more vivid red. This is one of our easier ducks to ID... especially the males. Canvasback -- Male (Aythya valisineria); Albuquerque, NM, Tingley Beach Park [Lou Feltz] by deserttoad The head will normally appear redder on this drake as the breeding season progresses. There were only a few Canvasbacks on one of the back ponds here... all males. Several other waterfowl species seem to be already paired up for the coming breeding season. The main visual change in non-breeding male Canvasbacks will be that the white back plumage will change color to a mottled tan. The mandibles will continue to show solid black.
