Love & War - Chapter 9

Galfrey was a queen, a paladin, an icon for all that was righteous and just in the Crusades. Cleo was a barbarian, a tiefling, a personification of demonic chaos. By all rights and logic, the two should have been at each other's throats- and often, they were.

But somehow, through war and struggle and sacrifice, they ended up finding more in each other than either ever expected.

It was enough to make Galfrey long for the numb days of repetitive monotony she had known before that woman stormed into her life. She’d always been content to simply serve the gods, never yearning for divine power herself. Yet she yearned for it now, if only so that she might have the power to burn Cleo’s memory away for good. To return to the walls she’d spent so long building around herself, which had kept her impartial and unaffected for so many years.

Dragonball Z: Abridged Episode 1 Review

The series begins with dated jokes and poor exposition.

But first, a little about this project. I love DragonBall Z: Abridged, and I also love film criticism, so naturally, I would want to use my skills as a film critic on this wonderful series in order to take a deeper look at it and analyze just what makes it so great. And that’s exactly what this project is; I’m going to watch, consider, and write a full review for each and every episode. Without further ado, let’s begin!

The most noteworthy thing about “The Return of Raditz! ... Wait...”1 is that it’s really not that noteworthy. Like any pilot episode, it’s main purpose is to establish characters and setting, but it’s weighed down by the years of backstory it is very clearly leaving out. We meet Goku at Kame House and see that he already has very strong relationships with Krillin, Bulma, and Master Roshi, but we don’t get to see their relationships established firmly. Instead we’re dropped right into the middle of this group with only hints and passing references at who they are.

This is best illustrated by one of the best potential jokes of the episode falling completely flat.2 When we meet Krillin, the first thing we learn about him is that he’s sexually and romantically desperate, since his first line is to call Bulma “boobs” rather than her name (which is sexist and unfunny, but thankfully Team Four Star has the sense to not make jokes like this a trend). Naturally we’re meant to believe that he’s a little bit of a loser, but we still only have this idea as an implication, and so when Goku says that he feels a power level bigger than Krillin’s losing streak, the joke falls flat because we don’t yet have any knowledge of what Krillin’s losing streak might possibly be (which also has the side effect of making the exposition useless).

The opening scene is overall stronger than the introduction to our protagonists (though the humor misses about as often). Starting the show off by interrupting Grieg’s “Peer Gent - Morning Mood” with a loud crash and the concerned exclamations of a marijuana farmer sets the tone and establishes Team Four Star’s sense of humor nicely (that the farmer “corrects” himself when no one else is around costs the joke some of its humor, but it’s still solid). Then Raditz shows up, and introduces himself nicely, killing off the farmer and establishing the relative weakness of most ordinary humans before flying away to look for “Kakarot.”

He stumbles onto Piccolo instead, however, who is established very clearly as a loner with no real friends in a clever (but extremely dated) MySpace joke. Naturally, Raditz and Piccolo don’t get along very well, and they both get ready to fight each other. Then, in a fairly inspired gag, two of the voice actors stop the footage, arguing over who will get to voice Raditz after the initial voice actor tries to call his attack by its Japanese name (a very foolish move). The new voice actor steps in, and renames the attack the “Keep Your Eye On The Bird” attack before getting distracted by someone more powerful than Piccolo.

The episode closes with Piccolo joining forces with Goku to save Gohan (Goku’s son) from Raditz, who has kidnapped him, nabbing one of the Dragonballs in the process. The weaknesses of this episode begin to come through again here, as we’re given hints as to Goku and Piccolo’s previous rivalry, but not enough information on that rivalry to justify their joining forces or their dislike for one another. This is unfortunate, because both Goku and Piccolo have the strongest voice actors in this episode (and with the exception of Vegeta, arguably the series), and they’re really good at playing off of each other. With just a little more exposition, their relationship could’ve been made perfectly clear.

Krillin: “You know, you guys are the reason I go to therapy.”

Like several other of the gods we know, did Foolish also not know about tickling? If not who was it that taught him. And if he did was it as a kid or much later in his life???

Foolish definitely knew about tickling since he was young. I headcanon he was probably raised quite normally with parents (or at least a parent) and learned about it in his childhood. He probably didn't experience it much though until DSMP days.

I think for powers, controlling the ocean and water is a big one. Being able to cause storms and summon lightning is another. Since he is a God of Undying I think he probably had the power to bless people with an immortality state. Like the next time someone should die, they get their health back full and carry on, but the blessing was only once unless Foolish blessed them again.

AND since he was a God of Death I really want to incorporate that power somehow without it just being the simple "he kills people". I think maybe he had the power to inflict madness in people and they'd kill for him or maybe like he could see/sense when people were about to die. Probably he doesn't have that power anymore since he chose to leave that life behind him.

As for mortal things he likes I think it has to of course be building. Foolish loves creating things with his bare hands but he's too clumsy for small things so building huge buildings and structures is the best for him. He does of course complain and get tired of it all, gathering all the materials himself when before he could have called upon any material he wanted, but when the build is done and he looks at what he accomplished through hard work it makes it all worth it.

and that includes really looking at sigyn. they'd barely had a moment together-- she was forbidden from visiting him in prison. he understood why, of course. he couldn't go having any ally among all this now, could he? someone who might show care and affection for him still. or-- well. he hoped she might. that she might be the last one left that could see through the things he'd done. didn't she always see him so well?

a few brief words had been shared upon the escape of asgard but now-- now they had quiet.

he moves, coming to walk towards her-- glad when she meets him half way. a thousand words, every explanation, everything he wants to ask.. it all fades away as he looks at her. caught in the gaze of perhaps the only person to truly know him and never push him away. because hadn't they tangled in so much dark together? hadn't they seen and experienced enough to be truly tested, and still, here they remained?

his arms are around her before he really even considers the action. hands at her cheeks. he's pulling her in close and the kiss is-- well. there's maybe a touch of desperation to it. a need to hold on, to cling to something familiar. to feel.. love, through all of this hell. after all this time pulling them in opposite directions.

he parts them only to breathe, but remains close-- nose to nose, eyes staying shut for a moment longer before he lets out a shaky breath and loki feels that maybe, for the first time in so long, that his feet might finally be on solid ground again.
