Anthony's Pizzeria & Ice Cream Parlor - Miami Ave in Wildwood Crest, NJ
Tumblr media
So this review is going to be my first post in a series I'm calling Wildwood Za 2022. There are SO MANY pizzerias in the Wildwoods but in my 30+ years of going, I have yet to find a plain slice as good as Mack's. There were a number of spots I wanted to try last year and just didn't have the time to visit, so this year I made an effort to get to all of them and was ALMOST successful. I had a couple new spots pop up that I just had to try so a few will have to wait until 2023.
Tumblr media
First up is Anthony's, a pizzeria right on the beach in Wildwood Crest that my parents told me was good. Boy, were they wrong. While the location is prime (literally on the beach), the pizza was straight garbage. I had a bad feeling when I walked in and saw no slices on display and laying eyes upon my heated up slice cemented those fears. As you can see, there was WAY too much sauce and it wasn't even good as it was overseasoned beyond belief. It pretty much tasted like frozen pizza and I wouldn't be surprised if that was exactly what it was. I will admit the crust was fine as it tasted like a breadstick, but honestly, that's not enough to save this slice. Absolutely not worth the $3 price tag. Avoid at all costs.

P.S. When I told my dad it was terrible he said he had a different threshold for bad pizza. Understandable.

Aztec & American Safari
Here is a comparison of two side-by-side Motels in Wildwood Crest, Aztec and American Safari.
The Aztec and American Safari are two adjacent motels with similar designs, so they are like one large property. We’ll examine their similarities. These photos were taken on March 26th, 1967. (…Or, was that 2023?) Here is the Aztec’s sign. Its angular thunderbird shape represents the Tiki movement, the architectural successor to Googie. Here is the sign to American Safari Motel. Like he Aztec…

Wildwood Crest’s Oceanview Motel, a Doo-Wop relic, to be renovated by new owner Madison Resorts
2022-09-01 16:07:04 Another piece of the Jersey Shore’s mid-century, Doo-Wop aesthetic will be preserved and renovated in Wildwood Crest after the Oceanview Motel found a new buyer willing to keep the unique building largely intact. Madison Resorts, which runs a handful of properties in Cape May, announced Wednesday that it acquired the shuttered motel at 7201 Ocean Ave. with plans to restore…

New Jersey needs to enforce this rule on more beaches (Opinion)
New Jersey needs to enforce this rule on more beaches (Opinion)
We all have our pet peeves when it comes to a day at the Jersey Shore. There are the people who set up WAY too close to you as if the entire beach isn’t available. There are selfish people who think everyone else wants to hear their music and unnecessarily blast it. Party time on the beachDejan_Dundjerski I’ve got news for you: we don’t want to hear it. And of course, there are the people who…

uno reverse! do you have any favorite fun facts/infodumps you would like to share? :D
Hoo boy, an open invitation to ramble about something that gets my brain excited? I hope you won't regret this. (Also, thank you, Milk :>)
Today we're going to be talking about Deb Cook!!!
Deborah Cook, as she is usually credited in films, is the head of LAIKA's costume department. She has worked on every LAIKA film that has been made, from Coraline (2009) to the upcoming Wildwood (2025).
The thing about stop-motion animation is that there is a massive amount of planning that needs to be worked out before the actual filming process even starts. Part of this is the costume designs for all the puppets, so that they fit into the world and can be used as vessels for a cohesive story.
Cook does a lot of research into historical elements that can be used in costumes, as well as using computers and collaborating with other people in the art department to create her own version of textiles that are perfect for the character. She takes her job very seriously, and works to consider what each character's personality is so she can create a fitting look for them.
But, the!! The thing is, these puppets are generally about eight to twelve inches tall!! So you can't just go to a craft store and buy any old fabric, because the weave might be too rough, or when a camera is focussed on a piece of clothing so small the colors are distorted. So there is a necessary level of detail that must be adhered to, otherwise the final product will be kind of disastrous. You can't just make tiny jeans out of regular denim, you have to find a fabric that looks like denim, but is light enough that it'll be flexible when placed on a tiny puppet.
Now, there are a lot of insanely talented people who create all sorts of miniatures and have come up with ingenious solutions to this that can be pointed out. HOWEVER, a great deal of these are because of how much work LAIKA has put into that field of art in the last seventeen years.
In Coraline, some of the costumes were made out of a child's sock. A sock. And it worked because Deb Cook is a fantastic and dedicated artist who works really hard to do her best in literally everything. But, now that LAIKA has had over a decade of experience and accolades and new highly clever artists joining them, they have come up with many new ways to use technology to help.
But Deb Cook is an artist and she will go out of her way to make something look as authentic as possible. For the iconic beetle crest on Kubo's clothing in Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), she dyed rice paste, painted the fabric, and then carefully washed it off to leave the image.
So, after all of that, and the meticulous attention given to every thread, you must remember that they have to animate all this. That means rigging in skirts and weighted sleeves and armature in capes. Each and every piece of clothing, in addition to needing to be replicated or else durable enough to be used for the two or so years required to make a stop-motion film, must be controlled down to the tiniest motion. In addition, the costume department she manages has to be able to make repairs or tiny alterations when something is damaged or an animator needs to get at the inner workings of a puppet.
There are so many more things that need to be considered in stop-motion versus live action, since the majority of the materials and designs are made from scratch in the studio.
And yet, despite all this, the woman hasn't won any awards
SO. That was my insane, unpolished rant about how much I love Deb Cook. Sorry and/or thank you if you made it this far, and if you want to learn more here are some resources:

HORSHAM, Pa. - A Montgomery County family has been left in shambles after officials say an 11-year-old boy was killed by his own mother, who then tried to drive her car into the ocean at the Jersey Shore.
Police were called to a house 500 block of Privet Road in Horsham Township Tuesday when a man said he discovered his son dead in the master bedroom.
The boy's dad told police the 11-year-old had slept in bed with his mom the night prior, but the door was locked the next morning, and his wife's car was missing.
Officials say an investigation revealed that the boy's mom, identified as 50-year-old Ruth DiRienzo-Whitehead, killed her son as he slept in her bed.
She then fled to Cape May and drove into the ocean until her car was inoperable. After walking to Wildwood Crest, she was taken into custody.
While inside the family home in Montgomery County, officials in Cape May alerted Horsham Police that they found Dirienzo-Whitehead's SUV partially submerged in the ocean at The Cove, just off Beach Avenue.
Dirienzo-Whitehead is a realtor in Horsham and owns a property in Wildwood Crest, according to officials.
A belt was found on the floor of the partially submerged vehicle during a search, the district attorney's office says.
The boy's death was determined to be ligature strangulation by homicide, according to an autopsy.
Documents say she told police her son had been upset and crying on and off all day about their financial difficulties. She did not want him to grow up with these struggles, so she strangled him with her husband's belt as he slept.
Horsham Police Chief, Scott Fida, said, "Our community is hurting right now. We're a relatively small, tight-knit community. Our prayers go out to the family, the GA community where this child went to school and as a community, we're going to help each other get through this."
His school, Germantown Academy, issued a statement Wednesday vowing to "honor him as he so truly deserves."
"[He] was an extraordinary child with a smile as bright as the sun… the embodiment of love, promise, and goodness, and we will never, ever forget him."
DiRienzo-Whitehead is being held in Cape May County as she awaits extradition to Montgomery County for murder charges.

Day 36: Oberlin to Newbury, OH
80 miles, 3,286ft ascent, 4:57
For the second time in three days we started the ride on wet streets, chasing a storm that had passed through hours earlier and hoping to arrive at the day’s destination before the next predicted storm in the afternoon.
Our exit from Oberlin was on several miles of freshly milled but not yet repaved asphalt; when you drive on roads like this it is noisy, riding it is a bone jarring challenge. As I was navigating this stretch of road I couldn’t help but think of the lyrics of the 38 Special song:
Just hold on loosely
But don't let go
If you cling to tightly
You're gonna lose control
This is in fact exactly how to ride rough pavement. I rode with Pat this morning, a female rider from Big Sky, MT. She is the strongest female rider and one of the strongest of all the riders on the trip. This fact is even more amazing considering she had a partial replacement of her left knee three years ago. Pat and I rode together to the first refueling stop but then separated and each of us rode solo.
Today’s ride took us on a wide arc between Cleveland and Akron. The flat terrain we’ve enjoyed the last three days has given way to gently rolling hills; today’s route was a net ascent but I didn’t mind the extra work. Wisconsin’s hills reminded me of the runaway truck exits you find on the downhill sections of Colorado interstates. These exits lead sharply uphill (and are usually paved with loose gravel) and are designed to quickly slow and stop the momentum of a run away truck. Wisconsin’s hills are like that. You grind your way to the top of a large climb, only to have your inertia robbed by a steep little hill at the bottom. This part of Ohio is more like a roller coaster. You still have to get yourself to the top of the big hill, but the subsequent rollers are small enough that you can keep some momentum and crest them.
We are close enough to Cleveland that our route wound through once rural communities which are now full of upscale subdivisions, large homes on huge lots and horse farms. Occasionally I could see an old farm house between the new mansions, but the farm fields had largely been lost to well manicured lawns. It reminded me of Wildwood, MO, but without the limestone bluffs.
The local motorists have distinguished themselves as being the least agreeable in our journey so far. Two rednecks in a pickup shouted and honked at two of our riders and then threw roofing nails on the road shoulder for a few miles. Later in the day, traffic was stopped at a construction zone waiting for the signal from the flagger to proceed; a bike group was at the front of the line. When the flagger gave the go ahead, a woman tried to zoom ahead and clipped one rider and hit another. She reluctantly pulled over at the insistence of the flagger, but was shouting and angry and refused to provide her license. The biker who was hit (one of the female Trek guides and obviously a VERY skilled rider) got some scrapes and her bike was damaged. Other riders took pictures of the license plate and this time a police report was filed. If I was Batman I would spend my time and fortune imposing justice on people who are assholes to bike riders. The good news is that we beat the rain.
Tonight we are staying at the Punderson Manor, a state lodge in Punderson Park. The bikers are obviously relieved to put this day behind us and are looking forward to sleeping late as tomorrow is a short 64 mile day.

Stella Star at Centennial Park
I took my new modernist outfit for a stroll in Wildwood Crest's Centennial Park.
It’s September again! I have fond memories of last September, and how the sunny days continued as the summer made way to give fall the spotlight. One day last September, I strolled along Centennial Park in a new outfit. These photos were taken on September 10th, 1966. (…Or, was that 2022?) I’m behind the large CREST sign made with individual letters that change their relative positions as you…
