Don’t Be Sorry
Tumblr media
( iron claw fanfic )
The countryside was beautiful. Serine. Empty. Quiet. A life that was what Kory Lanecher thought fit best for his family. He had moved his family to a ranch in Texas that his cousin had owned but sold to him. His ranch was a good size and he wanted to keep his kids busy so he purchased them horses to raise and in the future ride.
When moving to this ranch Kory had two kids. Barren the oldest and Hazel. The two siblings were teenagers when they arrived at the ranch. These two were no strangers to the ranch lifestyle, so Kory had purchased them horses and other livestock to care for on the ranch to keep them busy.
On a warm summer day at the beginning of June. Hazel was out on a small ride through the fields around the ranch. She was out by a small creek surrounded by brush and trees. She hopped off the horse and took a small walk around herself to let her horse get a break and have some water. Hazel was walking along the side of the creek. The faint sound of yelling and loud laughing perks her interest. The sound was further down the creek and she followed it.
Looking through the branches of a tree she sees a group of boys playing around with each other and the water. There were five boys, two of them looked to be around her age, and one seemed slightly younger and the last two where younger. They all were in homemade shorts cut from jeans. The way they all played around with each other seemed so loving and fun. Hazel could sense how close they all were.
Hazel was leaning against the tree and her hand was holding her steady against a branch. After a while the feeble branch snapped. The sound caught the attention of the boys and the rough housing abruptly stopped.
“Hey! Who’s out there!” The eldest brother had shouted in an aggressive and protective manner. This sends a panic in Hazel and she quickly reveals herself.
“Please! Don’t freak out. I was just going on a walk” she replied nervously as she revealed herself, “I didn’t mean to startle you” the sight of Hazel appearing from the tree sent a wave of relief to the boys.
“What brings you all the way out here?” The blonde brother asked with a playful, almost flirtatious tone. This made Hazel relax more and she walked closer to the boys.
“I live at the Lane Ranch, I was just hanging around” she answered with a smile as she saw the younger boys frantically trying to find a shirt to cover themselves.
“Woah! You’re with the new folks that came in!” The eldest brother had exclaimed in realization.
“Yes, I’m Hazel Lanechart. Nice to finally meet my neighbors” she put out her hand to the eldest.
“We’re the Adkisson’s . I’m Kevin, this is my brother David, brother Kerry, little brother Mike, and littlest brother Chris” Kevin said in a polite tone as he took Hazel’s hand and shook it.
A cheeky smirk crosses David’s lips as he takes Hazel's hand and pressed the back of her hand to his lips and said charmingly “It’s sure a pleasure to meet a beauty like yourself” this action caused a blush to cross Hazels cheek but masked it with a soft laugh at his action.
“Are you all this charmin’?” Hazel asked playfully as she pulled her hand away from the boy.
“I dunno, maybe stick around and find out!” Kerry had used his hand to splash water on the girl.
“Kerry!” Kevin was quick to try to scold his brother but Hazel had retaliated with kicking the water right back at Kerry.
Kerry, David and Mike had immediately teamed up to start splashing Hazel. Kevin had joined Hazel in trying to splash the other boys. Laugher erupted through all of them but after a while Hazel had remembered that she had left her horse unattended. Once the splashing had stopped Hazel had decided to leave.
“It’s been a pleasure boys, but I gotta get goin’.” Hazel said, trying to recollect her breath from laughing for so long. The boys let out playful fake groans of disappointment.
“Lemme walk you back” Kevin offered and she nodded in reply.
“Don’t be a stranger Hazel” David called out in his charming manner as the two started to walk back up the creek.
The two of them walked down the creek. Both wet from the events earlier.
“You and your brothers are quite the bunch” Hazel complemented in a kind hearted manner.
“Yeah we’re a handful. You got any siblings?” Kevin asked, letting a small chuckle escape his lips.
“Yeah I have an older brother. Barren, y’all seem like you’d get along.” She answered with a smile on her lips at the thought.
“I bet, but you’re pretty fun yourself” Kevin comforted.
The two finally reached where Hazel had left her horse. She was so thankful that it had not walked off. Kevin was caught off guard seeing the horse, and wasn’t expecting to see Hazel just to hop on the horse so casually.
“Well I’ll have to catch up with you boys later” Hazel said with a smile looking down at him from the horse.
“You should come around the house. We’d love to have you around” he replied smiling at the thought.
“We’ll see,” she said, backing up her horse from the creek and turning him to face back to the way her house lays. “I’ll see you around Kevin” she finished sweetly as she waved him goodbye before riding off to head back home.
Kevin had a big stupid grin stuck on his face as he waved goodbye to hazel. It stayed there as he walked back to his brothers at the creek. They all hollard and whistled when he returned. Once Kevin got back they decided to go home and tell their mother and father all about the girl they had encountered.
Kevin felt like a little kid waiting for a package on his doorstep, almost every day he seemed to look out the window and wait for her. He’d ask his father every day if he saw her or even a member of her family out in the fields or even in the distance. He wanted to see her again. He wondered about her, trying to figure out small things about her.
One morning he went out on a run, but he ran further than he usually would. He ran and saw a fence that didn’t belong to his father. He ran along the fence and was shocked to see Hazel. She wasn’t in the shorts and tank top he had seen her in last seen her in. She wore a jacket and pants, her hair up and gloves covered her hands. She was pulling a small wheelbarrow full of hay. She seemed to be in her own world. He watched in awe as she spread out the flakes of hay. He could see two horses in the distance coming up to follow her for the hay. He knew it was simple but he was entranced by her. Kevin jogged up to the fence post she was closest to. A huge smile on his face as he sees her up close.
“Mornin’ stranger” he says in a chipper tone but breathes from the run. Hazel was caught off guard seeing him but her shock was quickly replaced by a smile.
“Oh! Kevin. What brings you out here at five in the mornin’?” She said with a small giggle seeing him.
“Nothing much, just out on a run. I see your feedin’ the beasts” his smile never wavering looking at the girl.
“Oh yeah, no sleepin’ in with these two.” She answers quickly, throwing out the rest of the flakes next to her.
“So, I was thinkin’ maybe you can come by the house today? Me and my brothers miss ya” Kevin asks, leaning up against the fence, trying to get as close as he can to the girl.
“Sure, I think I’m free this afternoon. I’ll see ya then?” She replied with a small smile on her face.
“Sounds perfect” he smiled brightly at her response.
“Okay well I don’t wanna delay your run so I’ll head off. I’ll see you soon Kevin” Hazel said waving him goodbye as he started to head back to her home, still dragging the wheel barrel.
“See you soon Hazel” he watched her walk back, making sure she was okay the entire walk back.Once she was out of sight he ran back to his house, his giddy grin back on his face.
Once the clock struck noon, Kevin sat on the couch looking out the window. Like a dog waiting for its master, Kevin sat waiting to see Hazel. His brothers would tease the sight, but Kevin didn’t think anything of it. At around three o'clock Hazel had driven to the boys house. When she had stopped the truck, Kevin was quick to leave the house to greet her. Even with all the teasing ,the rest of the boys had quickly ran out of the house to do the same.
“Hey boys!” Hazel waved at them as she left her truck. She walked up onto the porch and laughed when they hugged her as a greeting. Her finally realizing how quickly comfortable these boys get.
“Thank the lord you finally showed up! Kevin couldn’t stop lookin’ out the window waitin’ for you!” Kerry teased. His comment made Hazel giggle at the thought and Kevin to grow red at being exposed.
“Don’t listen to them Hazel, lemme show you around” David butted in, talking to her in a playful charming voice. He stood behind her holding her shoulder and guided her to walk down the porch.
David led her out to the garage with the rest of the boys following. The garage door was open and was full of weights and homemade weight machines. Hazel laughed at the sight of the weights and said.
“Oh so here’s why you’re all so big”
“What? Don’t tell me you like yourself a string bean!” David teased as he pushed her on. Hazel only laughed and shook her head no in reply as he pushed her forward.
David pushed her to the back of the house. She was shocked to see the giant wrestling ring. She inspected the ring. Grazing her hand over the ropes as if to make sure it was even real.
“Y’all really like your wrestling” Hazel commented as she felt the canvas.
“Our dad was an amazin’ wrestler” Kevin explained coming up to stand next to Hazel, “He is Fritz Von Erich”
“That’s amazing. Are any of ya gonna wrestle professionally?” She asked, turning around looking at the boys. This question made Kevin’s eyes brighten and he quickly nodded.
“I’m doin’ discuss. I'm hopin’ to be an olympic athlete” Kerry answered.
“You definitely look strong enough to be an Olympian.” Hazel complemented with a smile. Kevin kept his gaze on Hazel. Her treatment towards his brothers warmed his heart.
“Speaking of dad, there he is,” David said as he saw his father approaching the group. Hazel was quick to dust herself off and to stand up straight when facing their father.
“Nice to meet you sir. I’m Hazel Lanecher.” She said, putting her hand out to shake his, speaking in a respectful and mannered tone.
“So you’re the girl that’s got my boys in a tissy. Nice to finally meet you, I’m Jack Barton” he replied in his own playful but still polite manner while shaking her hand. “What brought your family here, miss. Lanecher”
“My fathers cousin owned the ranch we are at now. My father needed a change of pace from Montana so we moved down here.” Hazel answered her tone not wavering wanting to make a good impression on their father.
“Well I’ll have to meet the old man sometime, if he’s got such a wonderful daughter, I bet he’s not so bad himself” he says with a chuckle before leaving the boys. The boys all laugh like little school boys.
“Let’s go up to the lake!” David exclaimed, getting the idea in an instant. All the brothers yelled to agree besides Kevin.
“Well would you want to go with us Hazel?” Kevin asked not wanting to force Hazel into it, even though he wanted to go just as much.
“Of course! I haven’t gotten the proper chance to see the sights” she answered in excitement.
“Then let’s go!” David exclaims excitedly as he picks up Hazel and pulls her over his shoulder. The action made her burst out in laughter as he carried her.
“David brother put her down!” Kevin tried to say sternly but he couldn’t stop laughing.
David paraded her through the house. Pretending to drop her when going up the stairs and trying to lift her feet up to make it seem like they’d go through the ceiling fan. Kevin thought of it as all good fun, but he couldn’t help the feeling of wanting to be the one to be playing around with Hazel like that.
Kevin had grabbed his keys, Kerry had successfully snuck a small cooler of beer and they headed out to the truck. David had wanted to drive but Kevin insisted on it. Since Hazel was the guest Kevin had her sit in the truck with him, while the rest of the boys had to sit in the bed.
“So what does your brother do” Kevin asked trying to fill the small silence in the truck.
“Barren and I stay home and take care of the ranch most of the time. Dad likes to think he does all the work, but he barely leaves the house” she answered in a chipper tone. Her feet up on the dash, and sitting against kevin to be comfortable.
“Next time you come by, bring your brother” Kevin offered and this cussed Hazel to let out a small snicker.
“I dunno, I think you boys would eat him alive. He’s all skinny and tiny. You’d crush him in one hug” Hazel said with a playful manner.
“Well if he's anythin’ like you I think he’ll do just fine” Kevin says then letting out a small amused chuckle.
The boys arrived at the Lake and they were quick to strip off their shirts, socks and shoes and jump in. Kevin and Hazel brought out the small cooler of beer and even a small radio. Hazel placed the cooler on the small doc and unknowing to her, David had snuck up to the edge of the doc and swiftly grabbed her ankle and pulled her into the water. The quick squeal then followed by a loud splash of water alerted Kevin. He looked into the water to see a laughing Kevin, and a now fully drenched Hazel emerging from the water.
“David!” Hazel yelled as she gasped for newfound air.
Hazel quickly sprung onto David’s shoulders and dunked him into the water. The sight made the other brothers burst in laughter. When David remerged he had a devilish look on his face. He quickly grabbed her sides and picked Hazel up and flung her into the water. Hazel wanted revenge. She was quick to swim back to David but he was prepared. Any attempt she tried to make to dunk or even move David was futile. After a while Hazel was ready to give up, but unbeknownst to her Kevin had gotten into the water and he saw her struggle to dunk his brother. So with David distracted by Hazel, Kevin came up behind his brother and grabbed his waist and threw him just like he threw Hazel. Seeing this Hazel cheered on Kevin.
Hazel had found her way out of the lake and back on the doc. She took off her now wet boots and socks and set them in the sun to dry. She had also taken off her shirt to dry as well. She was left in a tank top and shorts, but was as wet as all the other boys. As the day started to drift into night she calmed down and stayed out of the water. Her and Kevin sat on the back of the doc both with a beer in their hands. Hazel was just listening to Kevin talk and talk about him and his brothers. Kevin in turn listened to her talk about the cold and snowy life she had back in Montana.
Once it had gotten late enough they had decided to head home. The younger boys were asleep by the time they reached their house, Kevin and David carried the younger boys to their beds and Kerry just walked himself to his. David wished Hazel a goodnight while still trying to charm the girl. Kevin had decided to walk her out to her truck. Hazel sat in her truck but leaned out the open window to talk to Kevin.
“Thankyou for today Kevin,” Hazel said in a tender manner.
“Of course. We do that all the time, so come back if you really think it was that good” he replied with a small nervous laugh, stumbling over his words.
“I think I just might” she replied in a playful tone leaning out of the window further trying to emphasize her feelings.
“I think I- we’d like that” Kevin responded now in a slightly flustered state.
“You know what I think…” Hazel started but in a much softer and quieter tone her voice drifting off the closer she got to him. She placed a soft kiss to his lips, but she was swift to pull away and continue, “I think I’m startin’ to really like you Kevin” she ended with a smile before starting the truck.
Kevin was too stunned to say anything, but he had a small hint of a smile on his lips and that’s all Hazel needed. She waved goodbye before pulling her truck out of the driveway and driving off to her home. Kevin watched in awe not believing that she seemingly had chosen him out of his brothers. He was glad. He could barely sleep that night. Kevin just couldn’t wait till the next morning to see her on his morning run.
The next morning Kevin was quick to go out on his run. He decided then and there every morning he’d run by her fence and then run home. When approaching the fence he could see Hazel. She seemed to be waiting for him at the fence post. She was expecting him to stop and talk to her. Kevin indeed did stop but he didn’t talk to her, he quickly cupped the side of her face and placed a deep kiss to her lips. This caught the girl off guard but she had seemingly embraced it and kissed him back. After a few moments he had broken the kiss. He didn’t know what to say so he said.
“Mornin’ Hazel” he said with a small laugh at the fact he had no idea what to say.
“Good morning Kevin” Hazel smiled and laughed at his words. She found it endearing.
“Well I’m gonna get going” Kevin had his goofy smile on his face still.
“Okay, I’ll see you around” she replied sweetly and waved him goodbye as he started to run back home.
This became their routine. Every morning, Kevin would go on a run. Hazel would wait for him at the fence post and when they’d meet each other. They’d share a kiss and quick words between each other. Even if Kevin had his brothers with him on this run, he’d never waiver from this.
Ever since that fateful kiss after the lake, Kevin and Hazels relationship blossomed. They saw each other almost every day. She’d go to the lake with him, go on long drives in his truck with all the windows rolled down and the music blasting. She celebrated the Fourth of July with his family. She became close with the family and even went to watch Kevin’s wrestling matches. The only thing is that Kevin never really got to meet her family. He had met her brother and that’s about it. She never let him over at her ranch and if he was there he never was there long.
One night they were in his truck in a field. It was late but this didn’t bother the two. Kevin and Hazel were in the bed of the truck cuddling together and looking up at the stars. Kevin’s mind was wondering. He knew lots about Hazel but wanted to know more.
“Hazel, why haven’t I ever met your folks? Is it me?” He asked out of the blue, he was holding her close trying to be as comforting as possible. A small sigh left Hazel's lips and this made Kevin overthink and start to ramble. “I swear honey I’m not gonna judge y’all. I don’t care if your family is split or if” he tried to think of something to say but Hazel had finally spoken up.
“You know how you take care of your brothers. Well my mother is very sick, and I take care of her. My father doesn’t leave the house so he can spend as much time as she can with his wife. My brother is always out if I’m taking care of her, but if I’m gone he takes care of her” her statement wrecked Kevin. He wanted her to feel better and he knew this was hard for her.
“You care so deeply about your mother, that’s nothing you need to hide from me” he spoke softly, giving her thigh a small squeeze to try to reassure her.
“I know. I just didn’t want you worrying about me” she tried to cover up the real reasoning of her hiding this but Kevin bought her explanation.
“Well I’ll always worry about you. But I care about you, so don’t stress about it. If you ever need help with your mom I’ll be here for you” Kevin soothed and finished it by pressing a quick kiss to the side of her head.
“Thank you Kev” Hazel said, now relaxing at the thought.
Even with this conversation Hazel never opened up about her mother, and didn’t let Kevin near her home. But their lives went on just the same. They went on through the summer together and even the fall. Then winter came and something came up for Hazel. She started not being able to see Kevin as much as she usually would. Then that fateful morning happened.
Kevin was on his usual run, and Hazel was there waiting for him. She was glad he was alone, but sad she had to give him this news. When they kissed Kevin knew something was wrong and instead of running off like he usually did in the morning. He stayed.
“What’s wrong?” He asked with worry laced in his voice.
“It’s… it’s my mother. She is getting worse. She’s getting moved to a new location and I’ve decided to go with her” her voice was dripping with sadness and sorrow. She had a hard time looking Kevin in the eyes.
“Is your brother or father going with you?” Kevin was hoping for the best. He was hoping this was a family ordeal and not a solely Hazel issue. He hoped that she would be gone only for a little while.
“No… just me. And we don’t know how long I’ll be gone. I’ll be in California with her. I’m sorry Kev” she said faintly breaking and sobs leaving her lips and tears flowing from her eyes.
“No, no, no don’t be sorry honey. You did nothing wrong. You’re helping your family. If it were me I’d probably do the same” Kevin tried to comfort as he held the sides of her face. Using his thumbs to wipe her tears off her cheeks.
“I’m leaving tonight. But I swear I’ll try to keep in touch, and the moment I’m able to come home I will” Hazel said, trying to recover from this sad conversation.
“I’ll be here when you come back” Kevin promised looking deep in her eyes trying to show her his sincerity.
“I promise I’ll be back” she promised, tears still welling in her eyes but looking at him just as passionately.
The two kissed to seal the promise. It was their longest kiss. They didn’t want to leave each other. But when the kiss did end they had a hard time letting go of each other. But when Hazel pulled away to walk back she was still crying. She started to walk back but she never turned her back to him, but once he was out of sight she turned her back. Kevin had a hard time. He was stuck. He couldn’t even run back. He walked back. He felt empty. He felt like this wasn’t gonna be a short time away from each other. He knew that’d be their last kiss for a long time.
