“ATTEMPT RECOVERY 3 MINERS' BODIES,” Montreal Gazette. August 7, 1942. Page 13.  ---- Two of Five Bodies Located at Cadomin Mine After Worst Disaster in District --- Cadomin, Alberta, August 6. CP -  A double shift of miners, working their way through huge masses of coal and debris, late today sought to recover the bodies of three of five Cadomin miners killed last night in the worst disaster in the mining history of the district.
The accident occurred when water which had accumulated from old workings, swelled by recent rainfalls, burst into No. 9 level in the Cadomin mine shaft, about 150 miles southwest of Edmonton.
Two bodies have been recovered from the wreckage. They were identified as those of John Wallace and Victor Alleggretto. Bodies of the three other men have been located, but have not been reached because of the difficulty of removing debris. They are fireboss John Logan and miners Joseph Dorobrowski and Carl Stocks.
Several miners working in the shaft escaped into another crosscut of the mine by running ahead of the flowing mass of debris. These included Pete Laghi, Michael Kapusinski and Harry Pyson, all Cadomin residents.
A. A, Millar of Edmonton, Chief Mines Inspector for Alberta, said today he planned to leave at once for Cadomin to investigate circumstances surrounding the accident, and that he will report his findings to the provincial department after the investigation.
(William Goodwin, Mines Inspector for the Cadomin District, was at Cadomin in the course of his regular inspection work when the accident occurred, Millar said.)

"If you're inside this evacuation zone, you need to get out of here." That's the key message the mayors of Edson and Yellowhead County want residents to hear after an evacuation order was issued for the area on Friday evening as a result of a large wildfire threatening multiple communities. Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara and Yellowhead County Mayor Wade Williams are working together during the emergency situation. The pair spoke to CTV News Edmonton on Saturday. "We have a lot of people not taking these evacuations seriously enough. We have seen what these fires can do," Williams said. [...]

Over 24,000 residents throughout Western Canada have been ordered to evacuate their homes to escape active wildfires in the province of Alberta.
As of Saturday, there were 103active wildfires in the province, burning around 121,909 hectares, approximately 301,243 acres, the Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, said at a news briefing Saturday.
Since Friday morning, there have been 45 new wildfire starts, she said.
The wildfires have increased from 92 that were reported on Friday, at least 31 of which are out of control, according to a news release from the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA). Of the 61 remaining fires reported Friday, 44 are under control and 17 are being suppressed and are not likely to spread. The province has seen an increase of 20 wildfires since Thursday, AEMA reported.
Mandatory evacuations have affected a total of 24,511 people living throughout northern and central Alberta, including Yellowhead County, Grande Prairie County, and First Nation communities like Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation and Little Red River Cree Nation.
An additional 5,200 residents are under an evacuation alert, including those in Parkland and Saddle Hills counties. Everything is subject to change as this is a "rapidly-evolving situation," Smith said.
Smith activated the Emergency Management Cabinet Committee in response to the wildfires, which has been meeting daily since Friday.
She called the current situation "unprecedented" and assured residents that the government is prepared to use its emergency powers as needed.
"Our top priority is and always will be public safety and we're being briefed regularly by the experts who are handling the response," Smith said.
All options are on the table, including declaring a provincial state of emergency, Smith added.
"I know that all of this is difficult for Albertans, especially those who have been directly affected by these wildfires," she said.

When the Cardinal River Mine closed in 2020, it was the end of a century of coal mining near Cadomin, Alta. Coal was one of the main economic drivers in the area, helping fuel the steel-making industry.
The community thrived for decades. By the 1930s, almost 2,000 people lived in Cadomin. By 2021, the population had dwindled to 54, according to Statistics Canada.
But instead of becoming a ghost town, the community is building a new business base: tourism. "It's definitely going to become, without a doubt, a resort centre," said Curtis Way, president of the Cadomin Community Society.
The society is behind the push for a new $4-million community hall in Yellowhead County. About three years ago, the mining company Teck Resources donated $400,000 toward the project. The province provided $950,000 County has committed $2.25 million. Local property and business owners have a new hall.
"We're still short a couple hundred thousand to getting across the goal line," said Way. Cadomin is roughly 50 kilometres south of Hinton after the paved road becomes gravel.
The hamlet has been making do with the old Legion as its community hall. The building is years at the end of its life, said Way. The new focal point for the community is a space for music concerts, pig roasts and potlucks.
Although the community has 54 year-round residents, the population explodes to more than 200 during a long weekend, according to Way. "We're a hopping kind of place."
The aim is for shovels to be in the ground by June, and the hall could be built by December, just in time Christmas party. Cadomin is a popular area for ATVing, hiking and hunting, particularly big horn sheep.
"We're really seeing a lot of the older properties being knocked down are building new houses," said Way. "We're kind of the best-kept secret in Alberta right now when it comes to living."
So far, Hamlet's rising popularity has been limited to summer visitation. When local resident Leah Vallee arrived in Cadomin in the 1970s, there were about 20 kids. Now, there's none.
The new community hall would not only be a good location for weddings and celebrations, but she also said help attract more year-round families.
As the owner motel for more than 30 years, she said her phone is ringing more than ever prospective visitors. "I get so many calls from people wanting to come here," said Vallee.
"It will be the next Canmore." The last coal mine near the hamlet of Cadomin closed three years ago. But the community of about 50 residents is far from dying. Curtis Way is president of the Cadomin Community Society.
Similar has an industrial history last coal mine closed in 1979. Vallee, along husband, bought the Cadomin's only store last year, which likes chips and pop. The couple plans to open a cafe this month.
The community hall could also attract different kinds of businesses, said Way, including an ultra-marathon event. Edmonton's Monty McNeice, who also organizes the Klondike Ultra Marathon in Fort Assiniboine, has been visiting Cadomin and running many of its trails.
His kids particularly like to play with basketballs from the unlocked sports shed. "It's that kind of small town." His race idea is inspired by history. In the 1930s, coal miners used to race up to the summit of a nearby mountain. The winner got $75, which to nearly 15 days of wages.
"There are a few other old mining communities where ultramarathons were introduced to strengthen the community," said McNeice. He's aiming for the new race to launch in 2024, noting that the new community hall could serve as the point.

Despite a lack of significant growth Saturday, officials from municipalities west of Edmonton say the wildfire situation remains serious with flames less than two kilometres from the town of Edson, Alta. An evacuation order was issued for the town and parts of Yellowhead County, Alta., Friday evening as fires jumped guards and moved closer to populated areas. In a Saturday afternoon video update, Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara pleaded for anyone still in the community of about 8,000 people to leave. "This is going to be a very dire situation. We've always said we're going to be honest about what's going on. This is not good and this fire is a beast," he said. [...]

“Larsen Makes Desperate Dash for Liberty and Is at Large in Woods Near Edson,” Edmonton Bulletin. September 5, 1919. Page 01. --- Throws Himself from Speeder When Being Brought from Mountain Park to Edson, Between Miles 4 and 5, and Disappears in Woods Before the Machine Can Be Stopped --- A  telegram from Detective Campbell at Coal Spur received by Chief Hill late last evening conveyed the unwelcome information that Larsen, who had been arrested by Campbell yesterday at Cadomin mine, was again at large. The prisoner was being brought by Campbell, assisted by Constable McElroy, of the provincial force, on a railway speeder to Edson. When between mile four and five, while the speeder was running fast, he threw himself from the machine and before it could be stopped on the down grade, he had disappeared in the bush,. The hour was about 7.20 and the evening was dark, with rain falling.
He was dressed in a blue coat, over a blue and white striped peajacket, khaki shirt, light duck trousers, hobnailed high laced boots and black hat.
The late start was because a large part of the day had been spent in attempting to locate the place where he had hidden his weapons. He took the constables to a place where he said he had concealed them, but they were not there. He then said they had been stolen.
The country is rough and wooded where Larsen made his escape, but it is not likely that in such a country he can get clean away. His re-arrest is only a matter of time. But his escape shows that he is desperate and if he gets weapons there may be further tragedies.
The city and provincial police have both sent men to assist in the search. ---- JOHN GUNDARD LARSEN --- Makes sensational escape from Detective Campbell and Constable McElroy, throwing himself from gasoline speeder when near Edson and disappearing in the woods which bordered track.
