hi! i was wondering if i could get something with gibbs where you're abbey's new assistant? using: "right person, wrong time" thanks!
Title: Back To You
Word Count: 2206
Warnings: None
Pairings: GibbsxReader
Summary: The director assigns you to be abby's new lab tech. After chip and Fred she doesn't trust you until Gibbs gives her a reason to.
"No." The lab tech's eyes darted between you and the director.
"Abby," Jenny sighed, like it wasn't the first time they've had this conversation. "Chip was one person, Y/N is different. We've done an extensive background test and not only that but she's a former Marine."
"I don't care what she is! Chip was a bad, bad guy, Director! And so was Fred! She's probably bad too!"
"You do know that I'm standing right here, right?" You cross your arms over your chest. This wasn't where you wanted to be either, you wanted to be an agent in the field but the injury you sustained on your final tour wouldn't let you.
"Director I cannot have an.. outsider as my assistant! I work alone."
They kept bantering back in forth as if you weren't there until the Director finally snapped. "That's enough! Miss Sciuto, Y/N is going to be your assistant, no negotiations. This is final. It is still a trial basis, after one month we'll see how it goes." She gave you a look that clearly said 'good luck' before she turned to leave.
You stood awkwardly while Abby ran her eyes over you, squinting and turning her head in all weird sorts of way.
"Is there something I can do to make you more comfortable around me? The director told me what happened to you, with your other assistants."
Abby rolled her eyes. "I'm sure she did. I'm sure you know all about them because you're one of them."
"Abby, I'm not.. one of them," you tried to explain, "I'm just me. You read my file right? I've done a tour in Afghanistan and a tour in Iraq and I've been working for the Army CID for eight years. I'm highly decorated, and guess what, I don't want to be here either, but here I am."
Abby didn't answer, she just handed you a clipboard and said "Inventory."
The next morning you arrive to work at a time that you thought was early, however entering the forensics lab you could see that you were very wrong. Abby was hovering over her computer, a print was running through AFS. Another agent was standing next to her, looking through a bin of evidence.
"Morning Abby," you say, putting your stuff down in the office. She doesn't answer you. You sigh, grabbing a Monster out of your bag and throwing on a lab coat. "Do we have a case?" You stood on the opposite side of the table as them, trying to get a look at the evidence laid out.
"Sorry she gets like this when she's focused." The other agent smiles and looks up, extending a hand. "I'm Special Agent McGee, you can call me Tim."
"I'm Sergeant Y/L/N. Call me Y/N. Very nice to meet you."
"And you as well." He leaned against the table, taking his time to actually talk for a minute. "Are you in the navy?"
You shake your head. "Army CID. So, are you the boss around here? Other than Jenny, of course."
Tim laughed, shaking his head, "No, thankfully. That'll be Gibbs, wherever he is right now. He's a little intimidating when you first meet him but after awhile you realize he won't hurt you."
McGee continued talking but he had lost you at 'Gibbs.' It wasn't until you realized the talking had stopped and they were both staring at you that you realized you had zoned out. "Agent Gibbs," you start, "is he here now, or.. will he be coming down here?"
"No." Abby answers. "Did you finish inventory?"
You nod, handing her the clipboard that hung on the wall. "Finished last night before I left."
She hesitated before taking it, giving you a slight nod.
"Is there something I can do to help you with this case?"
"No." She turned her back to you and McGee just shrugged.
"So Gibbs," you say again.
"He's in the field right now," McGee replies. "Why?"
You tried to sound nonchalant as you answered, "I just want to meet the man in charge. Is there something wrong with that?"
McGee shook his head. "Nope. Just kinda weird. Most people hear the name Gibbs and try and run as far away as they can. He should be back later this afternoon."
"Y/N." Abby whirled around. "I'm going to give you a job. If you mess it up I swear that I will make your life miserable. Take this," she handed you a bin of evidence, "up to Officer Ziva David, McGee will go with you. Can I trust you not to kill him?"
You rolled your eyes and took the bin. "If that's what it takes for you to trust me."
The two of you stood in the elevator, taking it up to the main floor.
"This is Ziva. Tony, Agent DiNozzo, he's out with Gibbs."
A young agent with curly brown hair and bright brown eyes smiled up at you. "You must be the new lab tech."
"Yeah," you take the handshake she extended. "Y/N."
"Ziva David."
"Ziva is a Hebrew name, right?"
She nodded. Before you could say anything else, there was a yell from across the bullpen. "Ziver!!"
Your breath caught in your throat. That voice. It brought you back to 1990, stuck under 10 feet of sand, trying to claw your way out. You turned your head upwards. There he was. He hadn't noticed you as he breezed past you, barking orders at the agents. Ziva made her way down to autopsy and McGee was sent back down to the lab. Before you could turn around and follow him, Gibbs spoke up, still staring down at his computer
"Somethin' I can help you with.." He trailed off realizing he didn't know your name.
You could barely speak. He was older, sure, but he was the same man you had met when you started serving. "Sergeant Y/F/N Y/L/N. I'm Abby's new assistant. It's nice to see you again, Gunny." You said the last part quietly.
His head whipped up and his eyes went wide. "Y/N/N?" You remembered the first time he had called you that. "Come with me." He put down whatever he was doing, leaving his computer flashing some message. "Now." He stomped towards the elevator and you followed. As soon as the doors shut, he flicked the switch on the wall, shutting it down.
"Thought you died, Gunny." You were met with silence. "You got blown up and then never said a word."
"Could say the same 'bout you."
You shook your head. "I was never blown up."
"Thought you died," he clarified. "Sent you a letter after I was discharged."
"Where were you before that?" You tried not to sound angry, but you were. "Before you were discharged and after you were blown up? Where'd you go then?"
"Hospital. Coma for days."
Your face fell. "I didn't know."
"I know."
"How's your wife? Your daughter must be at least eighteen by now. Shannon and Kelly right?" He turned away, suddenly not able to meet your eyes. "Jethro?" Your stomach dropped. "What happened?" You whispered.
"Dead. Killed while I was overseas."
You felt tears forming for reasons you couldn't fathom. When you had met him, he had just married. All he talked about was how much he loved Shannon. And then when his daughter was born she was his everything. "I'm sorry," you whispered. You knew how he felt about apologies but you didn't know what else to say. "I didn't know." You found yourself saying the same phrase for at least the second time that conversation. You usually knew everything, it was part of your job, but now you just felt lost.
"I know." He shifted and put his hands in his pockets, leaning against the wall, clearly wanting to change the subject. "What 'bout you? Still with that one guy? What's his name.. Max?"
You smiled sadly and shook your head. "Broke it off as soon as I got back."
"Why? Always said ya' wanted ta' marry 'em."
"I did." You only had good feelings for him, he had been your best friend and your best lover, someone you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. "But I couldn't. I just… I felt like I wasn't being honest with him. It was kind of," you drifted off.
"Right person, wrong time?" you said at the same time.
"Yeah." You stood in the silence for a few moments, each of you just looking at the other. "Jethro are you seeing anyone right now? Better question, are you ready to see anyone?"
"No and depends."
"On what?"
"The person."
"Right."
"I'd be ready if it was you."
"Why didn't you try harder to find me? I mean, one letter Jethro. You're a man of few words but even that seemed scarce."
"What was I suppose' to do? Far as you knew I was married, far as I knew you were datin'. I married three times after her."
Your eyes went wide. "Three? Goodness Jethro, you always did gave game." You rolled your eyes at how stupid that sounded but went on. "Can I ask you something?"
"Jus' did."
You would have laughed if you weren't so shaky. It was like seeing a dead man walking. "All those years ago, if you hadn't been married to Shannon, would you have done something about how you felt about me?" It was no secret the feelings you both shared. During the war there would be brushed hands and gazes held longer than necessary, but you had both stayed loyal.
"Can't imagine that," he answered. "There bein' no Shannon, 's what I meant."
"Jethro, would you like to try again?"
"No."
You stopped. "What?" Had you totally misread the situation? Was he no longer the man you thought he was? Was he not in love with you anymore? "Did that coma go to your head or something?"
"Mhm. That's what they do." He reached towards you and you thought he was going to flick the elevator off but instead his hand came to rest on your back, pulling you in. "Don't wanna try again. Insinuates that I failed the fist time. Was right person, wrong time. Now it's right person, right time."
He pushed his lips against yours, gently, and all the doubt in your mind faded away. You let your tears fall as you held the man you had always loved, the one you gave up everything in hopes that somehow you would find your way back to him. And yet he was also the man that you had forgotten about, who simply sat as a torn photograph on your wall. He was nothing more than a memory of someone you had served with, and yet here he was. Flesh and bone and all the other good things that made up Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
You kissed him harder, a disgraceful noise being dragged from your throat as he pushed you up against the elevator door. "Y/N." He groaned, pushing his leg between your legs to hold himself up. You wanted to breathe but you wanted him more. Your hands worked their way down, pulling his shirt up, discarding it who knows where. At the same time, he worked on the buttons on your blouse. You had wanted this for so long and now finally, finally, it was coming true.
"I love you," you said sloppily. "Glad you're not dead.." The rest of your words were lost as he finally finished the buttons. Before he could rip your top off entirely, there was a ding from the elevator. You pulled away, just barely seeing the absolute love in Jethro's eyes before you realized you had been caught.
"Abs." Jethro breathed, stepping out of the big metal box with you on his arm. Your back must have nudged the lift back on during the very sexy make-out session. The button you had pressed just happened to be that for the lab.
Her eyes went between the two of you in rapid motion. "So I see you and Y/N have met.. I was just coming to talk to you about her."
"Yeah? Somethin' wrong with her? Seems like she gets the job done." He helped you do your buttons back up, leaving his coat still on the elevator, whichever floor it was going to.
"N-no, I just wanted to say.." She looked back at him. "She's amazing at what she does." There was a hint of a real smile on her face as she said it. "Whatever makes you happy, Gibbs."
"Hm. Know what'd make me happy right now?" He looked down at you, his blue eyes reminding you of the blue sky that broke through the tan desert. "I think McGee, DiNozzo and Ziva can finish this case up without me."
"You think?" You grinned up at him, trying to tear your eyes away from the small red mark you had made on his neck.
"I do." He clicked the elevator again, calling it back down. "Hope she's proved herself," Jethro said over his shoulder. You couldn't see it as his lips met yours again, but Abby smiled a real smile. Maybe this would be a good change from the CID.

Promises made
Chapter 6: Home
Read on Ao3
She hated it with a passion. Understanding they needed to turn her, put pillows in different places touch her, and liking it were two very different things. Looking forward to the day she was able and allowed to do it herself so they'd stop touching her. The only positive thing about it was Miriam. She was very glad that Miriam seemed to be her main nurse. Where the others just came in and did what needed to be done. Miriam talked to her while doing it. Warning her every time when she was going to touch her. It made her less anxious to be told beforehand what would happen with her body. Already she felt unstable enough without the uncertainty of what would happen.
This time Miriam did not come in with the goal to move her body.
"Hello Ziva. I am going to take you to get some more scans. If they look good you will start with physical therapy."
No better news could have come at that time. This laying around was not what she and thus by extend her body was used to. Every time Liat held up the cup to let her drink she could feel the weakness in her arms, from disuse. If everything in her life was changing she at least could get back on of the things she'd loved before. Exercising, keeping her body moving. In the past it had also helped her get her mind of other things.
Rolling Ziva's bed out of the room was the last Liat saw from both of them for the next hour. Not noticing that as soon as Ziva's bed was moved the woman in question closed her eyes. The scans were taken and after Ziva was being rolled in again. Liat could see the exhaustion on her face. Not surprising. The moving that came with preventing bedsores already made her tired. Moving her to the scanning machines would take even more energy from Ziva.
Back barely half an hour and doctor Raviv already entered the room.
"I have very good news for you Ziva" she said as a way of greeting "the scans look good. The events from a couple of days ago did no further damage. For both your spine and pelvic region there are good signs that it's starting to heal."
Finally some good news. While Ziva tried her hardest to pretend her emotional outburst at Eli's abandonment hadn't happened she had feared she made things worse for herself.
"Later today your physical therapist will visit you to discuss everything. I will also send in a dietitian. Before we can truly get you out of this bed and moved to occupational therapy we need to be sure to get you eating again. Any questions?"
"No, thank you doctor Raviv" pleased with the good news she had gotten.
- -
Habits. Hard to break if it was a wrong one, hard to get right if it was something not completely natural to the person. After his weeks at sea only one habit had stuck. Not the getting up early, he still had as much trouble with that as before. Writing his letters to Ziva however did stick.
Even with being back at his desk, the place he longed to be back at the moment he left. Even with being able to actually talk to Abby, tease McGee, get his head set straight by a slap to it by Gibbs. He still needed her. Not that he'd ever thought he would not. Getting to walk back into the bullpen every morning was great. Finally hearing from Ziva would be better. It became clear to him that no one from NCIS had heard from her since she left. The only one he had not approached about it was director Vance. He'd rather not do that.
Not after his attempt to question Gibbs about her. They had been going to a witnesses house to question them when on the drive there Tony had finally dared to ask.
"Have you heard from Ziva?"
Silence as it was so often with Gibbs was also his answer now.
"I never thought I'd say this but I miss our Israeli officer.  Did you know that neither McGee or Abby have heard from her? I had hoped you had any contact with her, is she on another mission for Mossad? She told me once it wasn't all hot women and car chases but I had always wondered if she was just.."
"DiNozzo. Your rambling" His boss said in a gruff voice, Tony knew that if Gibbs had not been driving instead of speaking he'd have head slapped him.
"Shutting up boss"
So, even though he had gotten almost everything he had wished for he still picked up his pen and paper and wrote to her. Late in the night when no one would glance twice at the senior field agent still at his desk.
The hope that she was send out on a mission and unable to contact him at all grew smaller and smaller. Or maybe it just got harder to cling to that hope.
As always he started his letter with her name. Just her name.
'Ziva, McGee and I have been back at NCIS for some time now and it is not the same without you here. I need my partner. You still haven't contacted me. I know what we said right before we left but.... I am starting to get worried. Where are you? Do you know how many times I picked up my phone to call you? The only thing that prevented me to press call was you yelling at me for compromising the mission you're on. That is the only explanation I can think of for you not contacting me.'
- -
Just as promised later that day a new face entered the hospital room. Shaking Ziva's hand and introducing herself as "Rasha" explaining since she and Ziva would be working close together she did not see the need for fancy titles or last names.
"Now I read through your medical file but I would like to hear from you what your life looked liked before you came here. How much exercise did you get? That way I can best make a plan for our sessions to get your body in the best condition for when you start occupational therapy"
"The normal amount. I always run...ran about eight kilometers every morning. Three times a week I would go to the gym for martial arts training. Sometimes more if work allow it. "
Inside Rasha had to chuckle, with Ziva saying the normal amount. Rasha read in the files that Ziva was a Mossad officer. Now she did not know about their training regime but she had patients that were in the IDF before, knowing how much they trained Rasha could only believe Mossad was at least that focused on physical strength and health.
"That is a good baseline to start from. That means you are in excellent form" her level of health greatly improved the odds of her recovery.
"I am not so sure about that" Ziva answered her even though no question was asked. "Since I have woken up my friend has had to help me hold a cup, they have to move me because I cannot do it myself. My arms feel weak"
"That is all perfectly normal. Your body has had to go through a lot these past weeks. The weakness you experience is normal after the coma you've been in. Loss of strength is already expected after a week. Let alone the time it was for you." A soft smile appeared on Rasha's face. If all of her patients were in the shape Ziva had been in before she would for sure see quicker recoveries. "The fact that you were in good shape before your accident means that your body is used to working. We will get you back in shape, get your strength back up. I cannot promise you you'll get back one hundred percent. But if you are willing to work so am I. Don't forget your body is also not getting the nutrients the way it is used to. Once you get back to eating you will find your strength will return fast. I'll take my notes and start working on a program. I will be back tomorrow. Prepare to start working then."
- -
The dietician Michael was a nice enough man, though that was maybe also due to Ziva's excitement at him being there. Longing for a bite of real food, not ice chips. After checking her mouth and swallow reflex quickly jolting things down in his file he gave her the good news. "You are good to go with oral ingestion again. Any swelling from the ventilator is gone. This does not mean you can immediately get back to eating full meals. You're digestive track has not been working on solid foods for too long for that. We will start you off slowly with broths onto mashes and introduce more fiber into your diet again. It is all written out so the nurses can handle that. I will check in periodically with you to see if the plan needs to be tweaked." Looking up when Miriam came into the room holding a tray with a bowl on it. "Now are you ready for real food? We will go slowly since you have been flat for a while. Give us a sign if you feel uncomfortable"
He pushed the button to raise her bed. Then everything went wrong, the bed had barely moved up a couple of inches. Nausea swept over her. More intense than at all the times they had moved her or had rolled her bed down to the scans.
"Stop" was all she was able to say before her stomach protested. At once she started dry heaving. For nothing was there to come up. Quickly she was lowered down again.
"Deep breaths Ziva. This is just a reaction from your body from laying down for so long. We will wait a couple of minutes before we try again. Let it sink down"
And like that, a couple of minutes later they tried again. Ziva closing her eyes before he could start the bed to lift her up a bit. Again with just a bit of movement the nausea came back. This time instead of lowering her down Michael just stopped the bed.
"Remember Ziva deep breaths. We'll try to stay like this to see if the nausea goes away. Your balancing organ just needs to get the message that everything is okay"
With the minutes passing the nausea did not go away. It just seemed to get worse. Ziva felt herself grow warm and start to sweat. When Michael saw this then he lowered her down again.
That whole process was repeated a handful of times more in the next half an hour. Sadly without any change.
"Please no more" Ziva finally said. Since the second time they'd tried to lift her she had not opened her eyes anymore.
Then finally it clicked with Miriam. Who remembered she had Ziva close her eyes on purpose quite a bit in the last couple of days.
"Ziva, did you feel dizzy or nauseated before going up?"
Nodding her head not daring to speak in fear of dry heaving again.
"All the time?" the answer now being a shake of her head.
"Ziva I know it is hard but I need you to answer me. When do you start to get dizzy?"
"When moved" were the only two words Ziva dared to speak.
"When we move you around, also when we move your bed right?" A nod confirmed it.
"I think we need to get you on some different pain medication before we try to get you up again. I think you are experiencing a side effect. I will talk with doctor Raviv to see about the change" leaving her alone with Michael.
"I believe Miriam might be right. For now we will wait until the medicine is changed. Depending on how you are feeling I will be back late in the afternoon."
After Miriam's talk with doctor Raviv it was decided to indeed change Ziva's pain medication. One that was ever so slightly less strong but with a lot less side effects. The change of the medication  was not easy. The pain medicine that had made her so sick going out of her system being sure it was noticed one last time. Which caused another bout of dry heaving even though Ziva was laying flat on her back. The morning she woke up after was better, the change in medicine very noticeable.
When Michael came back that day and they repeated the whole process there was a big change. She still got dizzy and nauseas when they lifted her but not as much. The need to throw up was gone. In slow fazes she was lifted. Somewhere between laying down and upright was where they left it for today. Not wanting to overwhelm Ziva's system. Because the day had taken a lot of energy out of Ziva it was Miriam who spoon fed her the soup. Trying to get over that embarrassment was hard but was made somewhat okay at the feeling of the broth going down. The taste of the salty broth did her good, finally something ells than the ice chips she had been allowed before.
When everyone concluded she would keep it down Michael told her again how they would build up her tolerance to solid foods. If at any point she felt her body fight against the food or feel nauseas by it she needed to let them know. Before he left he wanted to lower Ziva, who stopped him, down again.
"Can you leave me up please?"
He continued with lowering her "Your body has enough to adjust to. The half hour you have been up is the max I can allow right now. Mostly because of your spine. I will message your physical therapist, noting you responded well with being as upright as you are right now. You will work on being up for longer periods of time."
"You did well today Ziva." Miriam, always being kind to her, said before both she and Michael left. Leaving Ziva alone in the room with Liat. Who had come back from the gym right when Ziva had finished her broth. They talked some. Ziva informing her of what happened when she was gone. Satisfied with a day where she finally did something it was not much later that Ziva closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
- -
A new day had started and for the first time since Ziva landed in the hospital Liat finally thought things were taking a turn, for the better and staying that way.  Where she had thought that before this was different. This was the first day that Ziva had woken up with a smile. Looking forward to eating, to starting to work with Rasha.
"Hey Ziva, Liat" Rasha greeted her happiness being infectious. "Ready to work?"
Having to only look at Ziva to see her smile in reply. "Let's first get you up a bit more. I got the note from Michael and I agree with everything getting you stable upright is important right now"
Slowly she raised the bed. Ziva was happy to note that she did not get as dizzy today and not at all nauseated. After checking if Ziva felt okay Rasha took a seat on the other side of the bed that Liat sat. "Before we start I wanted us to talk about something. I know a lot has happened in the last couple of days and that everything can be very overwhelming. That is why I want you to know that this whole process that we start today is in your hands. Everything we do here is to give you as much choice and control for when you are okayed to leave. There will be times when progress seems none existent and things will get hard. But I am here to work through that with you."
Ziva understood. She did not fully trust Rasha for that was not in her nature. As long as what Rasha said was true, that she would do anything in her power to help Ziva they would be okay.
"What helps is to set a goal for yourself. Something to work towards. Tell me, what do you want? How does life look like when you get out of here?"
For a moment Ziva did not know what her answer should be. The past days had started and ended with her mostly focusing on the here and now. More overwhelmed by the drastic change her life had taken. In the past whenever an injury had brought her to the hospital she had fought tooth and nail to get out as soon as humanly possible to be able to return to work.
She turned the question Rasha had asked her over in her head. Again and again. What did she want? Most of the things she had wanted for her life were not a possibility anymore. Or at least the things that Eli had wanted for her. Without deciding to a memory popped in her head. Tony's voice "Promise me you'll come back. Promise me we'll get a chance?". That made her think of him. For the first time since she'd woken up. The thought of him brought a lot of new questions with it. Would he still want her like this? Unable to be his partner again? Would any of them? Right now she was a world away, she could not return in the same state she had left in. Would that change anything for them? Would Gibbs still trust her as he once had? Would Abby, McGee and Ducky receive her back with open arms? Even like this?
When she asked herself that question her mind answered with memories. Memories of them all hanging out after a case had been closed, thanksgiving at Ducky's, her girls nights with Abby, all the moments shared in the last years. They had taught her what it had meant to be part of a team. A team more often than not working as family. They taught her that is was okay to show what she had kept inside when working for Mossad. It was okay to be human, to make mistakes, to cry to laugh with the people around you. It was okay to love.
The answer to all of her questions would be yes. Even this far away from them she was still a part of them, just as they were a part of her. Things would not be as they were before but they could work at a new normal. She did not need her legs to sit down for tea with Ducky and listen to his stories. She did not need to be physically strong to have fun with McGee or a girls outing with Abby. Her and Gibbs shared a bond to deep to just break because of this. And Tony. She had seen him change in the years since she met him, especially in the last year when they had really gotten close. He slowly got into her heart as more than a friend even if that was hard to admit somehow. She knew it was the same for him. The connection they shared would hold, this would not change that. Ziva would make sure to keep her promises to him.
Rasha waited patiently as Ziva seemed to be deep in thoughts. She noticed Liat start to fidget next to Ziva, probably wondering if she should step in. Years of experience had taught Rasha that often times patients had not thought about that question before she asked it to them. Would not think much further than all the medical stuff happening around them. That was why this question was important. Once they realized what they wanted they became motivated they could push through the hard parts. It was visible the moment Ziva had found her answer. A tiny smile broke out on her face and she looked straight into Rasha's eyes. With conviction she spoke, a single word but it encompassed all that Ziva wanted to accomplish.

Gibbs and you have an argument
Summery: You are tired of gibbs coming home at 12:00 and jusy going downstairs to work on his boat, so you mention it and when he starts to deny, you blow up a little. What you did not expect was for the words he said to fly out of his mouth.
Being the wife of gibbs ment that you sometimes had to wait an additional 3-4 hours for your loving husband to get home. Even then, sometimes he would sit in the basement for hours at a time, only coming up to get dinner when you forced him too. Still, you composed yourself and delt with those nights, always willing to tell him that you married ALL of him, even his flaws. However, this past month was different. The entire month he had been home super late, barely eating, working on that damn boat, and never even spoke to you. It got on your nerves. How could he ignore you for an entire month before realizing it? Thats why you tryed to find a way to slip it in before he evaporated, stuck working on the unfinished boat.
"Love, i know your busy but i need to talk with you." You said softly, gaining some confidence as he seemed to be better then yesterday.
"Not now (Name) im busy, you know this." He responded, just as cold as the few times he would respond to you as of late. He continued to move around, grabbing some things for his long trip downstairs.
"I know, i just wanna ask if maybe you could take a break? You have been overworking yourself, its dangerous." You continue explaining. "Besides, maybe some time with your wife would help relax-" but you were quickly cut off by an annoyed tone.
"So you just want attention?" He asked as he stops moving and stares at you. You let out a shallow breath and shook your head.
"N-no, well, kinda but thats not why i am worried. You have been this way for a month, you work till 12:00 and then come home, and go right downstairs, you only come up once and thats too get your plate to take back downstairs!" You start to get louder as you get angrier that he hasent noticed his own scheduale.
"Im trying to save lives! Are you questioning me?! My job is serious and cant be wasted eating dinner and playing family!" He shouts at you, face growing a shade of light red, showing how angry he really is. You stagger backwards, shocked he would blow-up in such a way towards you.
"What are you saying Jethro?" You ask, worried for your relationship.
"IF YOU CANT HANDLE ME, FILE FOR A DAMN DIVORCE! I CANT WASTE MY TIME WITH YOU!!" He screamed towards you. Loud enough for the whole block to hear. You shook lightly and felt your eyes gathering tears. Gibbs stared at you, almost like he was waiting.
"You want a divorce..?" You asked, so meakly, it almost broke him. He had realized what he said. He just told the love of his life, to leave. He pushed you away. He hurt you. He broke all his custom vows, in 2 sentinces. You turned around and sobbed your way back to your "Shared" bedroom.
If he really wanted you gone, you would leave. You would do anything to ensure his happiness. Even if it ment destroying you in the process.
You grabbed a duffel from inside your closet and put it ontop the bed. You walked back to the closet and grabbed clothes, stuffing then inside. You didint need much, just enough to stay with Dinozzo for the night. You and Tony had been close friends for years before he introduced gibbs to you. You knew he was alone tonight so you figured you would go there. If he couldent take you, you would to to a hotel or maybe abby's.
"What are you doing?" You heard from the doorframe behind you. You turned to see gibbs standing there, wide eyed and with his eyes watered up. You smiled softly while still crying.
"Im going somewhere else for the night, I should be back tommorow, if you still want the divorce by then, i'll file it ok?" You said. Thats when he broke. He started to cry and hugged you, not wanting to let go.
"P-please dont, im so sorry, im sorry, please, dont leave me, i didint mean what i said i swear." He stiffled through small sobs. His feelings were not what you expected.
"But you said-" however he cut you off by kissing you roughly and messily, the same slightly chapped lips in play.
"Im sorry, please stay, i'll take a break, ill get rid of the boat, just, stay." He begged. You nodded and he shoved the duffel off the bed before picking you up and placing you in. He turned out the lights, climbed in and spent the rest of the night holding you, being afraid if he let go, he might lose you forever.
"I love you, Jethro"
"I love you too"

Rule 12 | Abby Scuito
Y/n's POV
"Tony, how's my little niece?" I ask my brother over the phone. He and Tali had just left Washington to travel after Ziva died. He changed for the better once he found out about Tali.
"She's fine Y/n/n, she misses you," he says, I sigh.
"I miss her too, I'll try and visit you guys soon," I say walking back to my living room in my apartment. Tony asked if I wanted to stay in his old one but after finding out about the people dying there I wasn't for it.
"Sounds good, I got to go. I'll call you later sis," He says hanging up before I got the chance to reply. I pull the phone away from my ear and roll my eyes.
"Idiot," I shake my head and sit on the couch turning Netflix on. One thing is my brother and I are both big movie people, we would always watch them when we were younger and just enjoy ourselves. We were basically all each other had.
Just as I'm about to put on Spider-Man 3 someone starts banging on my door. "Y/n open up!" I groan and get up walking to the door. I open it and glare at whose standing there.
"Can I help you Ellie? It's 11 o'Clock at night," I groan leaning on the door frame. She gives me a sheepish smile before holding up a fast food bag. I sigh and step aside letting her in. She laughs and walks past me handing me the bag as she goes to sit on the couch.
"Is it so wrong for me to want to see my best friend?" She asks, I roll my eyes eating a fry out of the bag, "No, but when it's 11 o'clock at night and you know I spend my Friday nights watching movies and hate being interrupted," I pause and pretend to think," yes," I say sitting next to her and pressing play on the movie and grabbing my burger out of the bag, taking a bite.
"Oh stop it, you can survive one night not watching a movie, besides I need your help," she says going quiet. I swallow the piece of my burger and look at her confused. "El, what's going on? Is Jake still bugging you? Because I will happily beat his ass for you...again," I say mumbling the last part but she still heard me as she shoves me to the side. "What? I had to do something. The asshole thought it was okay to cheat and expected you to take him back. Bitch no! You cheated you pay the consequences." I say getting pissed as I think about that bastard.
"No, it's not Jake, but thank you for being so protective. It's actually case related..." She trails off. I haven't been to the office since Tony left. It just didn't feel right to me to be there with my brother not there. Ellie is the only one I've kept in contact with since he left 3 months ago. She's kept me updated on everyone. McGee is gonna propose to Delilah, there's this new guy named Torres, and Gibbs is well Gibbs.
"Bishop you know I don't feel comfortable being there since Tony left. I fell like everyone judges me," I say setting my burger down on the bag on my coffee table in front of us. "You'll be fine, besides, Abby needs you," She says the last part in a slow teasing manner causing me to snap my head up and glare at her. "El stop, I told you, that was a one time thing," I get off the couch and grab what's left of my food bringing it to the kitchen. She gets up and follows after me.
"Please Y/n/n? It's the firewall on the victims computer, none of us can crack it and you're our only other option, please?" she pouts, I groan walking away knowing I'll crack.
"No"
"Please"
"No"
"Please"
"No"
"Please"
"No"
"Please"
"Ughh okay fine I'll help, now leave me alone so I can watch Toby McGuire in peace." I say falling back on my couch and lay across it giving Ellie no where to sit. "Thank you, I'm sure Abby will be pleased to see you," she smirks pushing my head up and sitting down causing my head to fall on her lap. I groan but don't respond continuing to watch the movie.
Time Skip
"Dude chill," Ellie says. We're in the elevator on the way to the squad room but I can't stop shaking my leg. "I'm sorry El, I don't even know why I'm so nervous. I guess it'll just be weird being here without Tony." I say, she rubs my arm in a comforting manner, "It'll be okay, I'll be with you the whole way," She says, I smile and give her a nod thanking her, she smiles and gives me a nod in return. The elevators ding and we walk off the elevator towards her desk.
Ellie sits at her desk while I stand behind her wall divider and lean on it, watching as Tim and some other guy talk to each other facing the monitor. "So where is this firewall THE Timothy McGee can't crack?" I ask making my presence known to them. They both turn around confused before Tim's face lights up, as he begins to walk towards me.
"Is that Y/n DiNozzo I see?" I laugh, pushing myself off the wall and meet him in the middle pulling him into a hug, "Hey Tim," I say, "How are you? How's Delilah?" I ask. He smiles, "We're both doing great, Thank you, She's actually in Dubai right now but she should be back soon. You'll have to come over for dinner soon." He says, I nod agreeing. We pull back when someone clears their throat. I look and see the guy Tim was talking too standing there with a big smile on his face.
"Hola, beautiful. I'm Special Agent Nick Torres," he says reaching for my hand, taking it in his and kissing the back of it. I look at him in disgust causing Bishop and McGee to laugh leaving Torres confused. "What?" he asks offended, letting my hand go.
"She's gay Torres," Bishop says in between laughter. He blushes in embarrassment and walks back to his desk. I join the other two in laughter. I immediately stop when I see Gibbs come in with a cup of coffee in his hand, while the others continue, I try to stop them but it doesn't work.
"Something funny McGee?" He asks, Tim immediately stops along with Bishop. "No Boss, just talking to Y/n," he says. Gibbs turns and looks at me, I smile and wave shyly. "Y/n," He smiles pulling me in for a hug, I slowly hug him back surprised at his actions. Gibbs and I never really talked when I'd visit Tony at the office so this is a big surprise.
"Uhh hey Gibbs, I just came by because Ellie mentioned some trouble with a firewall..." I trail off, he pulls back and nods. "Yea, Abby has been in the lab all night trying to crack it. Some new fresh eyes may be helpful. Do you still remember where the lab is?" He asks, I nod and give him a smile. "Yea, I should be able to make it there. I'll see you guys later." I wave to them, Bishop gives me an encouraging look. I nod and smile in thanks before turning and walking towards the elevator. I press the down button and wait for the doors to open. Looking down and noticing my shoes untied I kneel down and tie it.
As I'm tying them I hear the doors open followed by a gasp. I look up a bit and see shoes I know all to well. I slowly stand up and come face to face Abby Sciuto. "Oh uh hey," she says avoiding eye contact. "Hey," I say, "I was just on my way down, Bishop had mentioned something about a firewall." I say slowly standing up, almost eye level with her, as I'm a few inches taller even when she's wearing her boots.
"Oh, yeah, um I was just coming up to get Bishop but I guess you'll do," She says, turning back around and walking into the elevator. I stand there in a daze, "You coming or what?" She asks, I shake my head snapping out of it and follow her into the elevator. She presses the button for the floor of her lab and we are left in awkward silence.
The doors open and I let her go out first before following behind her into her lab. I stop at the door and look around smiling at the memories we shared in here when I would visit Tony.
"Y/n?" I snap out of it and look to see Abby looking at me confused, "You okay? You keep zoning out," She asks worried, I nod and give her a fake smile, which if she notices she doesn't mention. "Sorry, just got caught up in my head," I apologize, she nods and turns back to her computers.
"So, the petty officer was big into security software and ended up creating his own firewall for his computer and none of us can seem to figure out how to crack it. Bishop suggested you might be able to help." Abby explains, I nod and look at the code on the screen and smirk.
"None of you could crack this? I did this my freshman year in college. This is easy, may I?" I ask motioning to the keyboard, she nods and steps to the side letting me go ahead. I nod in thanks and step closer to her and start decoding the firewall. I get into decoding it I don't notice how close Abby and I are, nor that she is staring at me.
"Done," I say with a smile as the petty officers home screen appears. I turn to Abby and gasp at our closeness, I look down slightly and glance from her eyes to her lips as she does the same to me. Just as I'm about to lean in Gibbs comes in the room with two Caf-Pows and Bishop and McGee behind him, I jump away from Abby and clear my throat. Gibbs pays no mind while McGee and Bishop share a look and smirk at us causing me to glare slightly at them.
"Whatcha got Y/n/n and Abs?" Gibbs asks handing us both our Caf-Pows. "I was able to crack the firewall and get into his laptop but we haven't had a chance to-" Abby cuts me off before I can finish.
"Got something" I look at her surprised. "Turns out our dead petty officer had a thing for military blueprints," She pulls up the different blueprints that were on his computer.
"Never mind then," I mumble under my breath as Abby continues on talking to Gibbs. "You alright?" Bishop comes up to me and puts a comforting hand on my shoulder. I nod and take a sip of my Caf-Pow. "I will be," I sigh, she gives me another comforting squeeze.
"Bishop, McGee lets go, Abby got a lead on where the petty officer was getting the blueprints from." Gibbs says, giving Abby a kiss on the cheek and walking out with Bishop and McGee not far behind leaving Abby and I in her lab...alone.
"So... about earlier before Gibbs interrupted us..." She trails off. "Oh yeah, um we can just forget that ever happened." I say rubbing the back of my neck nervously. "But what if I don't want to," she says stepping closer to me leaving little space between us. I gasp causing her to smirk. She steps even closer and wraps her arms around my neck.
"Nervous?" She asks leaning up, with a sudden burst of confidence I wrap my arms around her waist and pull her even closer to me so our bodies are pressed up against each other. This time she gasps. "No, are you?" I ask leaning down slightly, she slowly shakes her head. Tired of all this teasing I lean down fully and pull her into a kiss, she gasps but kisses back, tightening her grip on my neck.
We both get lost in the kiss, having missed the feeling of being close to each other. We pull back since breathing is still a thing. "Whoa," I whisper, after we pull away. "Yeah," she whispers back looking up into my eyes. I see something I've never seen in them before but before anything else can be said my phone goes off. I look at Abby apologetically but she waves me off and lets go making me, I sigh at the loss of contact but answer my phone anyways.
"DiNozzo" I sigh, watching Abby move around so effortlessly. "Hey sis, did I interrupt something?" Tony asks, "No, just working in the lab with Abby, the team needed my help on a case," I explain to my older brother. "Ohhh, just working?" He asks, I can hear the smirk. "Stop it, what do you want?" I ask annoyed now.
"Just checking up on you, you know how I can get when I don't hear from you." He explains, a smile appearing on my face. "I know Tony, thank you and sorry, I've been with the team all day."
"Don't sweat it, just making sure you're good. Besides Tali wanted to say hi," He says, I hear shuffling and soon I hear the little voice of my niece speaking through the phone. "Aunt Y/n/n!!" she yells. "My little Tali! How are you?" I say back just as enthusiastically a her.
"Good, when will I see you again? I miss playing tea party with you," She asks, most likely pouting. "Awww I'm sorry sweetie, hopefully soon. I miss my little princess Tali," I say, she cheers. I'm assuming she gave Tony back the phone since he's who I hear next.
"She really does miss you Y/n/n," He sighs, I sigh too, "I know and I'm sorry Tony but it's hard for me to just drop everything and leave. My supervisor has been an ass lately and takes credit for all my work resulting in our boss pushing me harder. I got lucky to even have today off." I say walking and sitting on the chair at Abby's desk.
"I'm sorry sis, look I got to go, I'll call you later. Love you," He says. "Love you too Tony," I hang up, placing my phone on the desk and putting my head down.
"Everything okay?" Abby asks, walking over to me. I sigh and shake my head, "Not really my supervisor is an ass and keeps taking credit for everything I'm doing which makes our boss push on me even harder while my supervisor just sits there and does nothing leaving me with twice the work. It's not fun," I say leaning back in the chair throwing my arms over my eyes.
"Hey, I'm sure it'll all turn out alright. You're one of the smartest people I know. I mean aside from Bishop, McGee, Ducky, Gibbs and-"
"I get it Abs, thank you," I say laughing a bit. We sit in silence for a few before I decide to break it. "So I think we should talk about before," She sighs and nods.
"Yeah... look I like you Y/n and I have ever since we...you know. It's just I don't know. I'm scared." She says looking down.
Hey, it's okay," I reach out for her hands and pull her closer to me so she's standing in between my legs, while I'm still sitting. "I'm scared too, but I like you and I can feel something between us. Besides we don't work together all the time so there's no going against Gibbs rules." I try and joke causing her to let out a small laugh, "But if you don't want to be anything I understand," I say slowly letting her hands go.
"Y/n... I like you too, and I do want us to be something" She says taking hold of my hands again. I look up at her with a smile on my face which she returns. "Really?"
"Of course you dork," She laughs moving to sit on my lap and wrap her arms around my neck pulling me into a kiss. I pause before wrapping my arms around her waist holding her close.
"So does this mean you're my girlfriend?" I whisper as we pull away, she nods and gives me a quick kiss. I smile and give her a quick kiss.
Time Skip
Abby and I have been sitting in her lab talking for the past few hours, when Gibbs comes in the lab. "Y/n I need to speak to you," he says, I gulp but nod and stand up, walking over to him.
"Yes?" I ask. "I know how things at your job now are and after your help today I think we could use you." He says with a smile.
"What are you trying to say?" I ask him confused. "Welcome to the team Y/n," he says with a smile before walking out. I turn and look at Abby shocked.
"So much for not breaking his rules," I sigh.

NCIS Reaction: Minimum Security
Wench (@scripted-downfall) reacts.  At a later time period, and without having seen Wench’s reaction, Jezebel (@typicalopposite) reacts.  Comparisons may be made as a result.
“If my old man finds out I’ve been biking with you, he’ll kill us both” “I’ll get you a ride.”  Sounds like they might not just have been biking, if’n ya know what I mean.
[“Don’t get your thong in a twist”]
“What if he doesn’t stop?”  “Oh, he’ll stop.”  Buddy, I’m not sure I’d be so certain about that
Ohhhhh, the poor bike :((((
I understand him being pissed about the bike, for real.
That doesn’t change the fact that the guy’s already dead, I bet y- [Aghhhhh’ ☠️☠️☠️  Well he ain’t gonna be wishing shit lol]  WHAT DID I SAY!!!  (Should I start keeping a prediction counter?  I think I should.  Prediction Success: 1)
[Aight imma say it. Gibbs is handsome.  There I said it.  Add it to my weird list]  I don't get this one, but that's not much of a surprise to me these days alksdjf  [Idk it’s his smile. Kinda Tom cruise-y but 🤷🏻‍♀️]
I love the sections of the intro belonging to Tony and Abby.  His lil wave?  Her lil jump?  So cute.
Blegh.  BLEGHHHH.  “RUN THE GUT FOR ME.”  BLEH.
Ducky’s assistant’s name is Gerald, btw.
If not gallbladder stones, then… Diamond smuggler?
“They’re stones, doc.”  Diamonds looking possible.
Oh, come on!!!  EMERALDS????
[Emeralds.  Well shit]
I’m so annoyed now.  I think diamonds should count.  The point was there; “gemstones” was the correct answer.  I just didn’t get the exact gem right.  Hmph.  Now I’m unhappy.  You know what?!  I got the gemstone part right, so.  (Prediction Success: 1.5)
I also got the smuggling part right, so… (Prediction Success: 2.5)
[God I’m glad Tony brought his hair back forward.  The slicked back wasn’t it.] Agree.
Tony being linguistically pedantic makes me happy; I relate
TONY BEING SO HAPPY ABOUT GOING TO CUBA MAKES ME SO HAPPY TOO!!!  HIS CACKLE?!!?!  MY BELOVED. [Tony is so happy]  (Same Brain Cell — SBC — Count: 1)
[Sir how many times you gonna swap which way you’re wrapping that cord]
Oof, NCIS agent is involved.
“The women I date think the smell of sawdust is sexy.  That’s probably why I don’t date many women.”  Gibbs.  Ma’am.  Excuse you.  Sawdust is amazing.  The smell is awesome.  I would not date Gibbs, but the sawdust is not the issue.
All of these characters spilling Gibbs’ coffee… damn, what a waste.
“The Navy’s giving us a priority ride today.”  TONY FINALLY GETS HIS PRIVATE JET RIDE!  He looks so disbelieving; he’s adorable.
Oh.  Okay, apparently it’s not a private jet ride, and is very uncomfortable, but still.
OH.  Apparently it is a private jet ride.  HAH!
Dude, this looks like the Criminal Minds jet.  [It looks like the criminal minds plane] (SBC Count: 2)
Gibbs bemoaning the comfortable seating because it’s not uncomfortable; madam, calm yourself.  A little comfort will not harm you.
Poor Tony, keeps getting his hopes up about the trip, only to have them dashed.  Then again, the last times this happened, things were then better than he expected, so maybe he’ll get his horseback riding et al. after all!
Okay, I suppose I should have said: Oof, NCIS agent might be involved.
NO BUT TONY PULLING UP THE AIRPLANE STATS ON THE TOUCHSCREEN IS SO RELATABLE; I DO THAT ALL THE TIME.  Whenever I fly (very rare occurrence), I always stare at the air temperature and watch it change alsdkjf. Gibbs actually looked vaguely annoyed-but-endeared, and I approve.
“Anthony DiNozzo”  Whoa, we’re being fancy
[HES CHEESING SO HARD. i can’t even]
[I love her hair cut]
I know she said “there’s a map in it”, but my subtitles got cut off and it reads “there’s a man in it”
Y’all are really not being subtle, ngl.
“So, is there something going down that I should know about?” SEE?!?!?!
Wow, they were even more unsubtle than I thought.
[I half-remember this one]
That scene change was… abrupt.
I like Tony’s shirt.
Are Kate and Tony gonna bicker over room placement
I KNEW IT.  (Prediction Success: 3.5)
Kate saying Tony’s sexist in past episodes and also being the character who pulls the “I’m a woman” excuse more often than anyone to get her way
[I love Abby]
Are they still bickering over room placement
Please tell me Gibbs takes the room they were fighting over
WHAT DID I SAY; HE REALLY WENT AND DID THAT! I’M ON A ROLL (Adding two becuase they were still bickering over room placement btw.  Prediction Success: 5.5) [He took the bed with the bath I love it]  (SBC Count: 3)
[Tony.  You child.  I love it]
IGUANAAAAAA.  [Oh man, iguana]  (SBC Count: 4)
Poor Tony aksdjflkasjdf. Pulling his gun on the iguana.  [HALT]
To be fair, if I woke up with a strange lizard on my pillow, two inches away from sleep-clogged eyes, I might flip out too.  Especially since it was hissing.
[The wink at the fact Tony sleeps in the nude, though.  Kate!  You dog!]
Kinda poor Benjamin, but also.  He seems annoying.
I love Abby’s choker.  And her gloves.  (My brother bought my sister fingerless gloves and didn’t get me any and now I’m left mourning what could have been.). Abby’s are still cooler than my sister’s though.
I know this dude… OH.  HE’S THE MUSEUM CURATOR IN THE MUMMY ISN’T HE
Tony being followed by the iguana saldkfj
[That iguana staring him down. He like what he saw in bed lol]
“Might want to keep that door shut; iguanas’ve been known to wander inside”. Yes.  Tony knows.
[Tony’s whole damn looks change with his hairstyles]
I love the word “rapport”
“Did I say both of you?”  “Well, you didn’t not say both of us.”  “She’s kinda got a point there, boss.”  The Kate-and-Tony-versus-Gibbs interaction I always knew we needed.
btw, Tony calling Gibbs “boss” is adorable
Ooh, Gibbs, why you having Kate stay, huh?
Did.  Did they just randomly time-skip from him leaving to him coming back?  I’m confused.  [Did the video time skip… did it go from Tony leaving to Tony being back]  (SBC Count: 5)
[Lord Tony’s gonna be out there dancing ☠️]
“Shane.”  “Who’s Shane?”  “Alan Ladd.”  “Who’s Alan Ladd?”  BUDDY
“Why aren’t you praying?”  Don’t assume, Ka-  WHAT DID I SAY.  “I’m Presbyterian.”
IS HE ASKING ABOUT SHANE- I LOVE IT
“Oh, you young people don’t know what good movies are.”  Speaking as a person on the younger end of the gamut while still having been raised on classics, I can attest that modern audiences have suffered in movie quality.  In my opinion, at least.
“‘Splat’ isn’t violent?”  Love you, Tony.
“Are you here to check me out?”  Flirtatiously: “Define ‘checking out.’”  I SEE YOU, TONY
Buddy’s not even subtle rn, is he?  That was blatant flirtation.
[Tony. You blew that one]
I feel like pulling out Paula has some serious risks attached.  Yeah, she might be dirty, but she might not be, and her rapport is being screwed up as a result.
Tony playing the desperate flirt at the bar over here.
[She came back]
“If you don’t like me, then why do you keep coming over here for refills.”  “I like the game.”. “Me too.”  ngl, really hoping she’s not corrupt because the banter is decent.  And since McGee isn’t in this one, I’ve gotta take the repartee where I can get it.
BUDDY GETS HIS DANCEEEE.  Tony, I’m so proud.
OOP-  That spin was slick; Tony, I commend you
— — —
Stopping here because we’re at a scene change for the midpoint reaction!
I confess I’ve not much to say… It very much annoys me that this show has been very guilty-until-proven-innocent, without many instances where that changes; I mean, just from what springs to mind, there was the episode where the group was convinced the kid committed suicide; the naval folks were taking drugs; and now this, the ep where they’re all assuming that Cassidy is dirty from the fact that the vic had her (his coworker’s) male in her care.  They always assume, even when it’s illogical to do so, that the obvious is factual.  And I think that’s part of why I keep making predictions to the contrary, tbh.  I want them to be wrong because I want them to face their illogic each time, instead of getting lucky.  (But, I recognize, sometimes they’ll be right even if their logic isn’t sound, so I guess that’s fair.). Anyway, I want Cassidy to be innocent because of that, even if it doesn’t make sense given the story, but I’m not making that a prediction.
Mourning McGee’s absence; appreciating Kate and Tony, and Gibbs is not bad.  On we go!
— — —
I’m cringing just thinking about swallowing those emeralds; they look sharp.
Okay, I’m sorry, but I’m vaguely suspicious of museum-curator-translater dude.  Like, ever since I saw Shutter, where Ben’s lying to Jane about what the photo shaman dude was saying?  I never trust that translators are adequately conveying the message.  Call me cynical, but ‘tis true.
Tony dancing with Cassidy is so cute, I’m sorry.
Damn, Gibbs, be even more blunt about it why don’t you; that wasn’t harsh enough
Iffy acting, but I can’t tell if it’s actress or character
She really shouldn’t just hand over her apartment keys, I’m reasonably confident.
Tony looks vaguely conflicted about having to search Cassidy’s apartment
IGUANA.  [IGUANA]  (Damn, that one was blatant; SBC Count: 6)
“You were so excited coming to Cuba and riding on the jet” It’s true, Kate, he was adorably excited.
“You were the first woman I saw on my ‘endorphin high.’”  “Yeah, well.  We work together, Tony.  It’s like a brother-sister thing.”  Ma’am clearly has not seen any of the countless films, shows, fics, and irl interactions that feature in-office romances.
WAIT NO I’M AN IDIOT; SHE HAD AN IN-OFFICE ROMANCE?!?!?!  IN THE PILOT?!!??! MA’AM, WDYM?!?!
“You might wanna take that chip of your shoulder”  Oh, of course, no problem; of course it’s okay that you searched my mail and my apartment and so on.  Not a difficulty at all.
“He blew his chance to get laid”  Oh, come on, Cassidy, it’s not Tony’s fault.  [He blew his chance to get laid. Poor Tony ☠️]  (SBC Count: 7)
Oh, are we back to terrorists again?  How.  Unique.  [TERRORISTTTTS]  (Okay, that counts.  SBC Count: 8)
Gibbs once again being vinegar-not-honey.
DAMN ABBY YOU’RE EXPENSING A LOT I SEE  [Abby ☠️☠️ racking up a bill] (SBC Count: 9)
Tony’s hair is floppy.
Did he notice that she had “Escada” perfume?
I KNEW IT.  (Prediction Success: 6.5)
“Horizontal salsa” alksdjf ["Horizontal salsa"]  (SBC Count: 10)
I reallyyyyy want Cassidy to be good now that they’re giving Tony so much shit for caring about her.  [Tony’s done got smitten over one dance.  Buddy. 💕 *sigh*]
“Romance between agents, Kate.  It never works.”  Sir, shush.  Even if you’re speaking from experience, that proves nothing.  You’re not exactly easy to get along with. [And the romance between agents never working is coming off as an asshole rule/thought. BUT HE ISN'T WRONG AS FAR AS THE SHOW GOES]
I know my comment about the translations was about museum-curator-guy, but I maintain that it counts as half a prediction success since Sa’id was doing exactly that: not translating the whole conversation.   (Prediction Success: 7)
Abby and Ducky, again; I love you both.
[Ducky’s mother!]
DUCKYYYYY.  OMG, SIR!?!?!?  YOU’RE HILARIOUS, YOU SCANDALOUS DOG!  [You… dog? 👀]  (SBC Count: 11)
[Easter eggs ☠️☠️]
“My cursor has moved across places that would make Tony blush.”  Not Tony looking appraising!
IGUANA.
Protective!Tony is adorable.
Jeez, Gibbs, be harsher why don’t you; that wasn’t enough.
Cassidy, I stuck up for you, and now you be mean to Tony?  To make yourself look good?  Once again, these people need to stop tearing down their fellows as a means of increasing their own status.  I’m actually getting annoyed again by this.  [Tonyyyyyyy ☹️☹️☹️  “He bought my act.”  I hateeee the sad tony eps.  There’s a few.  Be prepared.]  (Does this count as SBC?)
Poor Tony.  [Poor Tony. “She’s good.” Tony’s face. Ya I agree 💔💔]  (That does.  SBC Count: 12)
“Eyes always give you away”  Poor Tony :(  [Sass tony! Get her GET HER (Eyes always give ya away)]  (SBC Count: 13)
[And she has the AUDACITY to look at him like a kicked puppy]  Like I said.  Don’t be mean to your allies to make yourself look good.
I. Do not trust this.  I’m waiting for her to pull an Elizabeth-from-24 and not go along with the plan.  Get pissed and try to kill him, or screw up the plan.
Tbh, I’m glad that didn’t happen.  I didn’t appreciate it in 24 (only partly because it was Misha who got attacked as a result), and I wouldn’t have appreciated it here.
“There.  Right there.”  I didn’t realize this was Legally Blonde: the Musical.
I’m impressed he didn’t notice the wire yet.
Did I mention, yet?  Poor Tony.
This situation was astoundingly mishandled, ngl.  [Damn plan backfired]
[Well the back fire backfired also]  Literally lakdsfj
Poor Tony :(((  [Tonyyyyy]  (I’m counting that one too.  SBC Count: 14)
I appreciate Kate trying to help Tony.
Also, just saying, Tony is quite dashing in the suit.
TONY.  HE FINALLY GOT TO SHOW OFF THE TECHNOLOGY TO SOMEONE WHO APPRECIATED IT!!!  My goodness, he’s so adorable.
[Well his smile’s back at least.]
And that’s a wrap!
– – –
For the endpoint reaction… Be warned that I’m writing this with a killer headache (hah, pun unintended), so I’m not sure it’s 100% coherent, and it might be a bit short.
I’m glad that Cassidy wasn’t involved because, as I’ve said, they’ve got a bad habit of having snap judgements they make at the beginning be right all the way through to the end.  Unfortunately, this was about the most logical snap judgement of the series thus far, so I’m also vaguely annoyed it wasn’t right.  I’m deciding to wash my hands of it because it’s not like the characters will actually learn, but oh, well.
The writing was decent, I suppose?  Highly, highly lost as to how the hell emerald smuggling turned into terrorists again, but… I’ve given up on trying to track it.  I will say: there’s a slight possibility that reacting simultaneously to the ep is causing me not to notice stuff?  Or to track the plot?  But I doubt it.  I’m still good with Dark Angel, after all, and following it is easy.  But I guess I’ll just wait until we watch something else to decide; I legitimately cannot be sure whether the bad writing would be a little better if I were just watching it straight.  (Pretty sure not though.)
Gibbs was an asshole again, but not enough that I’m currently fuming about it, I suppose.  Kate was good; I liked her.  Abby and Ducky continue to be awesome.  McGee was notably missing, which is sad, but oh, well.
Summary of this ep: Tony deserved better.
Final thoughts as I type the end of this reaction: The chances I don't write something about this ep… Low.

Promises made: Chapter 2
Read promises made on ao3
Chapter 2: Pen and Paper
Eli was annoyed when Officer Tuvia left his office. He had big plans in place for Ziva, missions she was vital for. He had finally been able to convince the new director at NCIS, Leon Vance, an old friend, to send his daughter back to him. The recently deceased director Jenny Sheppard had been a big pain. Being to loyal to Ziva to care for the politics of not sending her back. After Ziva's first year at NCIS he tried and get her back but being stonewalled every time. He had wanted his best agent back for some time. And now this, when he finally had her back. He had read the reports. Knowing officer David was off duty and should have let the active agents and police handle it.
He had been surprised when Officer Tuvia tried to go against him on behalf of Ziva. He remembered her as skinny young girl, playing with both of his daughters, always seeming to hang around. He never would have thought she would become as good of an officer as she had. There was however a big flaw he now found out, having hoped with the years apart that it would have faded. Loyalty. The wrong kind of loyalty not to country but to a friend. Another person with too much loyalty to Ziva not to their country.
Even though the hour was late he placed a call to Officer Hadar. Telling him he needed to be assured word of Ziva being in the hospital would not get out. Make sure that little detail would be erased from the reports both the one from officer Tuvia as well as from the ones form the police. Just as well as any mention from any news outlet that a Mossad officer had been involved in any way shape or form with the drive by. Having already send a couple of agents to deal with the perpetrators was enough.
Right before he finally left for the night he left a note for his secretary to inform the hospital to contact them when his daughter woke up. For he could not spare the time to go to the hospital. She was in a coma after all, and would not notice him not being there. Further it would not look good for the director of Mossad to spent his time in the hospital. Their enemies might get the wrong idea's. Thinking him old and ill. And trying to uproot everything he worked for. No, duty came first.
--
Late at night working on his boat, only the working light on Gibbs tried to work out his frustration. He did not like being blindsided by Leon Vance like that. With one short meeting, an ever shorter list of orders he lost his team.
Something that Gibbs would never admit to anyone out loud was that his team brought great comfort to him. After all the hurt and pain in his early life he could not deny that every single one of those kids meant something to him. That was one of the big reasons he had come back after his brief stint in Mexico.
Tony, Tim and Ziva. When the games Leon was playing had finished he would get them back where they were supposed to be. Having been lost deep inside of his thoughts something made him snap out of it. Looking at his phone for the time he saw it was time to go.
--
The first email from Abby and McGee had finally gotten through. Just like he'd thought, they had responded almost immediately to him. Something to do with his clearance level and the internet. Believing the young marine who'd finally helped him out Tony did not. The marine probably believed Tony to be bad with computers since he seemed to dumb down the way he talked after he asked Tony to type in his password to unlock the laptop so he'd be able to look at it.
Fine, Tony thought, as long as things worked right now he did not mind being viewed as a bit of a luddite. Still no email from Ziva. Why had he agreed not to call her, he was itching to do that right about now. Wanting to hear her voice, talk to her, get his head on straight. The first case on board had not been an easy one. A lot of suffering, a marine who went home just a bit more broken than before. He needed his friend to talk him through it. Finding out how much for granted he had taken her silent support the past years. Abby would not be an option. McGee would try to understand but in the end he would not fully, for the side of Tony he didn't let anyone see was the one needing the venting, the emotional release. Ziva, he needed Ziva, he needed his best friend.
"You cannot email me Tony" She'd said. Not trusting her email wasn't being watched. Even the secure and secret one she would email him from.
Not really realizing what he was doing until the first words were written down. He'd taken up a pen and paper and had started to write. Actually write a letter, a bit old fashioned maybe. As he poured all his thoughts out on the paper he hoped Ziva would appreciate his effort. Knowing her love for ready books he hoped it also extended to handwritten letters. For the first word he'd written was her name. Addressing the letter to her.
'Ziva,
Look at me, actually writing with pen and paper. Isn't that something a dashing fellow would do in one of your Israeli romance novels? Just as this.
I miss you.
Yes I know. Me, admitting to missing you. It's been close to two weeks. I still haven't heard from you. '
For a moment resting the pen, hoping that writing everything as if she'd answer him would help. He picked the pen back up and continue writing the letter, everything he needed to share with her. With her name and after the rest of the letter a new habit had formed.
Each time his head was full and he needed to share what he couldn't with McGee, each time he thought of her and all the things he'd wanted them to do and discover together, he wrote.
These letters could never be send out. Tony would make sure to save them all and once he would get back to NCIS keep them with him. One day, when Ziva and him would take their chance he would make sure to let her read them.

Birdman Part 10
Gibbs and Tony walked back into the command center; Dante and Brandon were smiling from ear to ear at having watched Tony take a suspect. All they kept muttering was too cool, Tony with a badge and gun.
Vance just shook his head before he spoke to Dante and Brandon. “You both have seen him with a gun before, unless you’re telling me he heads into a combat zone unarmed. He turned to DiNozzo. ”Do you think you could have waited for a bomb squad? I really don’t like my agents dealing with explosives.”
‘I could of, but it is my specialty after all. Gotta use the degree occasionally, and hell! It was my baby that was in danger and no one messes with my baby.” The look on Tony’s face was horrorstruck.
“Point taken.” Vance tried to hide a smile. “I’ll see you both back at NCIS. Dante and Flash it was nice to see you both again. I’ll see you Saturday?”
“Yes sir. We can’t let Tonio have all the fun!”
Tony and Gibbs packed up their gear and were ready to head out. Tony looked over at Dante and Brandon. “If you want head to my house and I’ll catch up with you both after I finish up, or I call you later and let you know the details on Saturday.
Brandon spoke for the two of them. “We’ll see you at your house when you get done. Don’t worry about us.”
“Later than guys.” Tony headed out the door followed by Gibbs.
“You boys behave tonight, understand?”
“Yes Gunny.” Dante and Brandon tried their best to put an innocent look on their faces.
Gibbs just shook his head and headed out the door.

**********
The Gibbs Team looked at the plasma, looking over the military file displayed on it.
Tony crossed his arms over his chest and got closer to the screen, “She’s pretty, real pretty.” “She’s missing DiNozzo,” Gibbs said, walking into the bullpen with his coffee. “How did you-” Gibbs just stared at him. “Nevermind.”
McGee rolled his eyes before turning to the screen. “Lieutenant Y/N ‘Medusa’ Abbott was reported UA this morning by her captain, Captain Pete Mitchell.” Ziva spoke up, “She’s a Naval Aviator, graduated top of her class and has flown several high profile missions.” “She also was a TOP GUN graduate, graduating in the number one spot there as well,” Tony added.
“She got a backseater?” Gibbs asked. “Uh, no, not anymore,” Tim said, looking down at the ground. “Not anymore?” The image changed to one of a photo of Y/N and her backseater. “Lieutenant Jordan Winters was in a car accident in 2018. He was in a coma for a month, when he woke up the damage to his legs had been so severe that he was discharged,” Tony elaborated.
Gibbs nodded, “What about her wingman?” Ziva pressed the clicker, “Lieutenant Jacob Seresin, call sign ‘Hangman’; also graduated top of his class and graduated from TOP GUN in the number one slot.” Tony winced, “Wonder what he did to earn a call sign like that.” Ziva chuckled, “I can think of a few things.”
A smack sounded out in the bullpen.
Ziva and Tony rubbed the back of their heads. “Right, sorry boss.”
“We need to talk to her squadron, Captain Mitchell, and Admiral Bates,” he walked around his desk and grabbed his coffee. “DiNozzo, you’re with me.” “Gibbs, why are we looking into this? She’s only been UA a few hours, that’s not really enough to classify her as missing,” Ziva questioned. “My gut.”
As Gibbs and Tony got into the elevator, “McGee, I want a BOLO out for her vehicle.” “Yes, Boss.”
********
After flashing their badges to the gate they went into the training facility.
“How can I help you guys?” The secretary asked as he looked up from his computer. “Do you know where we can find Admiral Bates?” “He should be in his office, he’s expecting you.” Gibbs nodded and went down the hall.
He knocked and received a ‘come in’.
Gibbs walked in flashing his badge, “Admiral Bates? Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, NCIS. This is Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo.” Warlock stood, “Glad you could make it here so soon. I know Captain Mitchell called it in, but he was ordered to start training as usual.” “Is he on the ground?” Warlock nodded, “Yes, as are the rest of the pilots. If you’ll follow me I can show you the way.”
As he led the way, they asked him questions. Like what Y/N was like, what her relationship was with her squad and her commanding officers. And Warlock had nothing but positive responses.
They entered the hangar seeing the pilots sitting casually, standing at attention when the Admiral entered the room.
“You may be seated.” Warlock gestured to the agents, “They are Special Agents Gibbs and DiNozzo. They’re from NCIS.”
Payback sat up with a furrowed brow, “NCIS? What happened?” Warlock sighed, “As you all know, Lieutenant Abbott did not report this morning. They’re here to ask you all some questions.”
Gibbs turned to Maverick, “Captain, I’d like to speak with you first.” “Of course, my office is this way.”
******
In Maverick’s office, Gibbs asked him questions about Y/N.
“You called this in very early, why?” Maverick sighed, “Med- Lieutenant Abbott, has never been UA and has barely ever called in sick. I’ve had to send her home a few times actually.” Tony nodded before asking his own question, “So, there is no possibility that she’s late?” “No, sir.”
Maverick sighed, “I just, I have this feeling that something’s very wrong. It’s in my gut, and my gut is usually right.” Tony and Gibbs shared a look, nodding.
“Is there anyone that might want to hurt her for any reason?” Tony asked. Pete shook his head, “Not that I know of. She’s loved by everyone on this squad and her past squads had nothing but nice things to say about her.” Gibbs sat up, “We need to personally talk with each of those pilots out there.” Mav nodded, “Of course, whatever you need.”
******
They spoke with Hangman first.
“What can you tell us about Lieutenant Abbott?” Gibbs asked. “She’s one of the best damn fighter pilots around. It’s an honor flying with her,” Jake answered honestly.
“You’ve flown with her for a while, nearly your whole career,” Tony pointed out. “Yes, sir. We were in another squadron together before being reassigned to this one.” Both nodded.
Gibbs glanced down at Y/N’s file. “She’s got a badass call sign. ‘Medusa’. Let me guess, you gave that to her?” Jake nodded, smiling at the memory, “I did.” “Why Medusa?” Jake chuckled, “Well, first she flies stone cold. If she ever gets hit on in a bar, the look she has could kill. She also loves mythology, it’s one of her hyperfixations.” He smiled as he remembered the last reason, “She’s got a sick Medusa tattoo on her thigh.”
Tony raised his brows, huffing in amusement.
Jake tensed at that, and Gibbs noticed, but didn’t mention it.
“You mentioned that she got hit on, do you think any of those guys would maybe try to hurt her because she rejected them?” DiNozzo asked. Hangman frowned a little, thinking, “No, most of them are usually drunk and just move on to the next girl.” “Were there any that didn’t move on?” He nodded, “A few, but they tend to move on when the rest of us size him up from across the room.”
“Has anything like that happened since you’ve been stationed here?” Gibbs asked. “No, mainly because she’s not too familiar with the area or the bars so she usually doesn’t go up to the bar alone.” “What about her stone cold stare?” Tony asked, a hint of mirth in his tone. “It still works, but some guys tend to take that as playing hard to get. So, one of us guys usually goes to the bar with her. If she needs to go to the bathroom, she goes with Phoenix or Halo.” They nodded, writing their notes down.
“What about her relationship with her backseater?” Jake chuckled, “Her and X-Ray are like brother and sister. She still visits him when she gets the chance.” Tony arched a quizzical eyebrow, “They’re still close?” He nodded, “The bond between pilot and wizzo is something else. When you’re in a plane together, your life rests entirely on the other person’s shoulders. They were a great team, I owe both of them my life.”
Gibbs nodded, “Seems like Lieutenant Abbott owes you her life as well. You’ve got two air-to-air kills, one of which was to save her life about 2 years ago.” Hangman nodded, “Yes sir. She was out of defense with no ammo, she had a bandit on her three o’clock.” “So, that’s when you swooped in and saved the day?” Tony asked, chuckling before cutting it off with a cough from a stare from Gibbs.
“Thank you Lieutenant Seresin, if we have more questions I need you to be available,” Gibbs said as they both stood. “Of course, sir,” Jake shook his hand, along with Tony’s before leaving.
********
The rest of the interviews went very similarly.
Everyone said basically the same thing. Medusa was never late, loved by every one of them, and had no known enemies. When at the bar no pursuers ever tried to follow her out.
While they didn’t get a lead to where she could be, they got an idea on who she is.
*******
As they drove back to NCIS, Gibbs’ phone rang.
“What ya got, McGee?” “Lieutenant Abbott’s vehicle was spotted in a ditch headed towards the air station. Sending the coordinates now,” McGee reports. “Ziva and I have already started that way.”
Tony nodded at Gibbs after checking his phone. Gibbs nodded back, “Okay, we’ll meet you and Ziva there.” He hung up and started driving to where Y/N’s car was spotted.
*******
They met up at the scene and began to process it.
“So, what are we looking at Boss?” DiNozzo asked as he photographed tire marks. “I’ll tell you when I know, DiNozzo.” “Right.”
Gibbs turned to Ducky, “Do you have a time of death, Ducky?” “Based on bruising, I’d say a day, maybe two.” They moved her body from the vehicle to the gurney to check her body temperature. “Her body temperature suggests the same.”
“How are we gonna tell the Dagger Squad?” Tony asked, watching Palmer wheel the gurney up to the truck. “How are we gonna tell her family?” “Her squadron is the only family she’s got, McGee,” Gibbs huffed and made his way back to the car.
*******
Jethro walked into autopsy, “You got a cause of death for me, Ducky?” Dr. Mallard went over to the x-rays, “Well, based on the bruising, and the position we found her in - Lieutenant Abbott died of asphyxiation. When she crashed into the tree, she was pinned by the steering wheel. Poor girl, her ribs were crushed and it could have taken hours for her to lose consciousness.” Gibbs turned to the autopsy table, walking over to the body on it.
He tilted his head as he looked at her face, squinting a little. “Did we get a positive ID on her?” “We found her ID, sir,” Palmer piped up. Gibbs just gave him a look before turning to Ducky, “Did we confirm that?” Ducky waved his finger, “I thought you were going to ask that, which is why I was going to suggest getting one of her colleagues to come up here to confirm.” “Why didn’t we just fingerprint her?”
Palmer came over, “We would have-” He turned her palm over, “Except she doesn’t have any.” Gibbs nodded, “Lieutenant Seresin mentioned she had a tattoo on her thigh. One of Medusa, said that’s how she got her call sign.”
Ducky nodded, “Ah! Yes, Medusa.” He moved the cloth of her leg, showing the tattoo there. “Beautiful work of art, truly.”
Gibbs’ phone rang, “Yeah Abbs?” “I think I’ve got something fishy with the Lieutenant’s car.” He nodded, “On my way.”
Ducky looked down at her body, “Call it a gut feeling my dear, but something about you just doesn’t line up.”
*******
Gibbs and Tony walked into the garage, “What you got Abby?”
The scientist popped up from behind the door. “Something that doesn’t line up.” He rose a brow, “And that is?” She enthusiastically waved him over.
“Look at the interior.” He did. “It’s covered in glass, Abbs.” “Exactly!” Tony laughed, “Abby, that’s normal for a crash.” Abby held up a finger, “But the lack of blood is not!”
Gibbs furrowed his brow and looked at the interior more closely.
There truly was not enough blood in that car for it to have been a proper crash. There was little blood on the air bag, the seat, the windows- anywhere blood would be, there was small amounts.
Gibbs looked at the crime scene photos, seeing the little amount of blood on her body.
“The lack of blood suggests-” “She was dead before the car hit the tree,” Gibbs said as he turned to walk to the elevator.
Abby quickly followed him, “Gibbs wait!” “What?” She smiled at his expectant expression. “I was checking the brake pedal and I found this,” she held up an evidence jar. He sighed and grabbed the jar, shaking it a little, “What is this?” She took it back, “I’m thinking it’s cinder block. I’m gonna run tests to be sure, and on the trace amounts of blood as well.”
Gibbs smiled, “Good work, Abby.”
*****
Gibbs walked into the squad room the next day, he really hadn’t left the building, going over every detail he could find on Lieutenant Abbott. Also staying for the autopsy of her body, learning that she had in fact died somewhere else two days prior to the day she was found. And results from the residue found in the floorboard were confirmed to be cinder block
He was still waiting on the results of the blood analysis.
As if on cue, his phone rang. “Gibbs.” “The blood results came back and you won’t believe-” That’s all he needed before he hung up and went to the elevator.
*******
Walking in with a Caf-POW, Gibbs went over to Abby at her lab computer.
“Tell me something, Abbs,” he said, sitting the drink down. “I can do better than that.”
She pulled up the blood test, both from the body and what she pulled off the airbag. “These blood samples don’t match.” Gibbs furrowed his brow, “So there was someone else in the car?” Abby shook her head, “Nope. This blood-” She held up a vile taken from the body. “Does not match this blood.” She held up the swab Ducky took from where Medusa’s nose bled. “When I ran a test on this swab, I couldn’t find a match. So, I requested this.”
Abby took a breath, allowing Gibbs to ask questions. “So whose blood is this?” “I’m glad you asked.” She pulled up another test, showing a positive match. “What is this?” “When I learned the blood pulled off the Lieutenant’s skin didn’t match what was taken out of her body, I ran what I found on the airbag against both. What was found on the airbag matches what was taken off her skin.”
Gibbs nodded, “Do we have any idea on whose blood that is?” “Not who,” Abby smirked, turning to her evidence table. “Animal?” “Nope.” Gibbs exhaled impatiently, “Then what is it, Abby?”
“Based on the theory we had about her being dead before the crash, I tested the blood for red dye. And I found that both samples, the ones taken from both the air bag and her skin, contained Red Dye 40.” “That’s food coloring.” Abby nodded, “Yup! The blood in the vehicle is fake. Our Lieutenant was murdered before the crash.” Gibbs kissed her cheek, “Good work, Abbs.”
*******
“McGee, go get Lieutenant Seresin. Bring him in for questioning, but don’t tell him why,” Gibbs said as he walked around his desk.
Tim stood up, “Uh, but do I get to know why we’re bringing him in?” Gibbs looked up at him, “Because Lieutenant Abbott was murdered.”
*****
Hangman sat in interrogation, toothpick in his mouth as he tapped on the table.
Gibbs walked in and Jake looked up, taking the pick out of his mouth. “Lieutenant Seresin,” Gibbs nodded to him. “Agent Gibbs,” Jake nodded back.
It was silent for a moment, Hangman waiting for the agent to speak.
“When did you last see Medusa, Hangman?” Gibbs looked up from the file on the table. “Sunday night, around 2200, sir.” “That’s late, you both weren’t in your dorms?” Jake shook his head, “No sir. The squad went out to the bar that night, sir. Y/N and I went to our rental on base at 2130.” “You lived together?” Hangman nodded, “Yes, sir. We’re dating, sir.”
Gibbs leaned on the table, “Dating?”
“Yes sir.” “Was this not an issue with you being in the same squadron?” “We were dating before joining the Navy, sir. Grew up together.” “And you aren’t married yet?” Jake exhaled through his nose, his jaw clenching a little.
Gibbs smirked a little as he watched Hangman’s eyes fall to the table. “What happened Sunday night? Did you and Y/N get into a fight that night?” Jake swallowed, looking Gibbs in the eye, “Yes sir.” “About what?”
“A girl at the bar had flirted with me-” “Did you flirt back?” Jake looked at Gibbs incredulously, “Of course not.” “Then why did you fight with Medusa?” Jake rubbed his face, “When I turned the girl down, she laid it on thicker. Y/N claimed her territory.” Gibbs nodded and began writing, “I assume you left after that?” He nodded, “Yes sir.”
“What happened when you got home, Lieutenant?” Jake sniffed and rubbed his nose, “Medusa was giving me the cold shoulder, which I’m not entirely surprised about. I tried to get her to talk and when she did, it escalated. And she asked me a question, one that I hesitated to answer.” “Was the question,” Gibbs played with his pen. “When you were gonna marry her?”
Hangman nodded, “Yes sir. She said she was tired of having to show ‘barrack bunnies’ that I’m taken. That if we were married, it’d stop them. I told her a ring doesn’t stop them, if anything they try harder… Then she asked if I ever planned on marrying her, and I hesitated.” “That’s when she left?” “Stormed out the door and left. I needed to talk about it, so I called my buddy Rooster and he came by. He stayed over because I wasn’t sure if Medusa was going to stay with Phoenix or not. She didn’t come home or show up on base.”
Gibbs cleared his throat, “She didn’t come home because she was in a car accident, ran off the road and smashed into a tree.”
He could see Jake’s heart plummet as the words left his mouth. “Is-is she okay?” Gibbs shook his head, hesitating to pull out the photos but laid them out anyway, “I’m sorry, Lieutenant. She was found dead in the driver’s seat.” Jake looked down at the photos and covered his mouth, “Is she here?” Gibbs nodded, “She’s in autopsy.” “Can I see her? Please?”
******
Tony and Ziva watched the interrogation through the glass.
“Do you think he’s telling the truth?” He asked, looking down at Ziva. “About seeing her Sunday night?” She looked up at DiNozzo, laughing a little, “Or that they were a couple?” He scoffed, “I know that’s a lie. Dating for nearly 15 years and they aren’t married, there’s no way.”
Ziva looked back and saw how torn up Jake looked. She sobered up, “I think he’s telling the truth. Gibbs does too.”

Gibbs took Jake to autopsy, “Ducky, I’ve got a second opinion to confirm Lieutenant Abbott’s ID.”
“Oh, who might this charming young man be?” Ducky asked, walking up to Jake. Hangman held his hand out, “Lieutenant Jake Seresin, you can call me Hangman.” Ducky smiled and shook his hand, “Doctor Mallard, everyone calls me Ducky.” Jake couldn’t help but chuckle, “I think you’d like my friend.” “Is he also a medical examiner?” Hangman shook his head, chuckling, “No, he’s also a bird.”
Gibbs smirked from behind his coffee, before following Ducky and Hangman.
“I must warn you, Lieutenant, the crash made matching her to her ID through facial recognition difficult.” Ducky pinched the cloth in his fingers, waiting for Jake’s confirmation that this is what he wanted. “Please, Doctor Mallard.”
Ducky moved the sheet, exposing her face. Jake inhaled sharply, hesitantly reaching out, pausing. “You may touch her, Jacob.” Jake ran his index finger along the side of her face. “Oh, Sugar… I’m so sorry..”
Both Ducky and Gibbs watch tears fill Jake’s eyes before he furrows his brows. “What’s wrong Jake?” Gibbs asked, tilting his chin up. “It’s just- Y/N has a scar. Right here,” Hangman used his pinky to trace a line from just below her cheek bone to a spot on her neck. “She got it last year. She tried to break up a bar fight and got grazed by a broken bottle.” “Are you sure it hasn’t faded?” Jake shook his head, pulling out his phone, finding a photo from Sunday night before the fight.
He gave it to Ducky, who zoomed in on the photo, seeing the scar in the exact place it was supposed to be.
“Can you show me her tattoos?” Gibbs arched a brow, “Tattoos?” He looked at Ducky, “Why didn’t you say she had more than one?” “Because we only had one to go off of.” Gibbs nodded, “Yeah, the important one!”
Jake arched a brow, looking between the two before Ducky smirked and turned back to him and lifted the sheet. Jake’s eyes scanned her body, matching every tattoo to the ones he had committed to memory. He shuddered, covering his mouth, “It’s her.”
Gibbs inhaled through his nose, shoulders rising a little before he exhaled. “Lieutenant, can anyone confirm that Lieutenant Abbott was at the bar on Sunday?” Jake’s eyes shot up to the marine, “I don’t understand, you said this was a car accident.” “Answer the question, Hangman.” Jake stood straight at the tone Gibbs had, “The Dagger Squad, or the bartender at the Siren’s Cave, sir.”
******
Ziva and Tony headed to the air station to talk to the squad and McGee went to the bar to get surveillance.
“Lieutenant Machado, can you confirm that Lieutenants Seresin and Abbott were at the Siren’s Cave Sunday night?” Ziva asked, sitting across from Coyote. “Yeah, Medusa beat me twice at 9-ball.”
“Lieutenant Bradshaw, Lieutenant Seresin said that he called you to come over after the fight he had with Lieutenant Abbott. Did you pass her on your way to their home?” Tony asked Rooster. “Yeah, she passed the bar as I was leaving.”
Tony called Gibbs to relay the information.
******
Gibbs opened the interrogation room door.
“Everyone confirmed seeing you both at the bar on Sunday night. Lieutenant Bradshaw confirmed that he saw her on his way to your house. You can go.” Jake stood up, “Can I get her tags, sir?” Gibbs nodded and jerked his head for Hangman to follow him.
They went down to Abby’s lab.
“Gibbs, Gibbs, Gibbs!” Abby came over, startling Jake a little. She paused, noticing him, “Hi, I’m Abby, forensic scientist.” He smiled, “Lieutenant Jake Seresin, friends call me Hangman.” “Oooh, a pilot- wait, you’re…” She trailed off as she realized who Jake was.
She hugged him, “Oh, I’m so sorry.” Jake glanced at Gibbs, who was smiling at him and shrugging, before hugging her back. “Thank you, Abby.”
When she pulled away she looked at Gibbs, waiting for him to speak. “If you’ve processed them, I need Lieutenant Abbott’s dog tags out of evidence and given to Lieutenant Seresin,” Gibbs told her. Abby frowned, “I’m sorry, I can’t do that.” Jake swallowed and nodded, “I understand if you need to keep them for any reason. I just-” “No!” Abby cut him off. “No, it’s not that I still need them. I don’t have them.” Jake tilted his head, “That can't be right, we never take them off.”
“Abby, I’ll be back. Lieutenant, I need to talk to you.” Gibbs ushered Jake out of Abby’s lab and to the elevator.
“Agent Gibbs, there’s something you’re not telling me. Was my wingman murdered?” Jake hissed as soon as the doors closed. Gibbs pressed the button for the squad room, sighing as he looked at Jake and stopped the elevator, “The body in autopsy is three days old. Y/N left your house on Sunday night.” Jake’s jaw slacked, “There’s a chance she’s alive?” Gibbs clenched his jaw, “Yeah. So I want to know who went through all the trouble to find a damn near perfect body double and replicate her tattoos to make it look like she died, and I wanna know why.”
******
Your head stayed down when the door opened.
“Oh come on, Y/N.” The cold metal of the blade under your chin made you raise your head. “There she is.”
*******
“Is there anyone in Y/N’s past that would want to hurt her?” Jake shook his head, chewing a toothpick as he paced through the squad room, “I don’t know.” “Come on, Hangman, think.” Jake clenched his jaw so hard he broke his toothpick, “I’m sorry if I can’t think of a single person that would have it out for the sweetest woman on the damn planet, Agent DiNozzo!”
Gibbs' phone rang, “Gibbs.” “I’ve got something!” He hung up and stood, “Abby’s lab now.”
Everyone, including Jake, went to Abby’s lab.
“Show me what you got Abbs.” She grinned at him and turned to her computer. “Just to be thorough, I found the Facebook pages of the tattoo shops Medusa got her tattoos at. I found the posts where she tagged them, and matched them with the photos taken in autopsy of her tattoos. And-” The team watched on the plasma as the photos layered over one another. “They don’t line up,” McGee finished for Abby.
“I also called the tattoo shops and learned they all use different ink. And all of the tattoos on our Jane Doe use the same ink.” “So this just further proves the fact that that body isn’t Lieutenant Abbott.” “Yes, but the fact it’s all the same ink means it’s easier to trace, Boss,” McGee spoke up.
Gibbs nodded and moved to leave, “Well, trace it McGee!” “I already did, Boss.” Gibbs stopped and turned, finding a smiling Probie.
He tossed his arms to the side, “Are you wanting a microphone?” Tim shook his head, “Sorry, Boss. First, Abby found the brand of ink, and then I was able to find where it’s sold. Turns out you can find it on Amazon, along with a tattoo machine. Ducky also noticed that, upon closer inspection, that the tattoos were in the healing stage. So I narrowed the search to purchases made two weeks ago and delivered to addresses in Virginia.”
McGee turned back to his computer, and everyone went to the plasma.
“Both were delivered to a: Hannah Nicholson.” Gibbs turned to Jake, “Lieutenant, does that name sound familiar to you?” Hangman shook his head, “No, never heard of her.”
Abby came up, “No, but you’ve seen her.” She clicked her remote and someone that looked similar to you was pulled up. “Hannah Nicholson is our Jane Doe.”
*******
You gritted your teeth as a slap was delivered to your face.
“When I’m done with you, your career will be over. You’ll never be in the sky again.” You laughed, like actually laughed, “You can’t be serious. Ruin my career? I’m a part of the best of the best, you could never keep me-” You grunted as he punched you in the gut.
The man squatted to be eye level with you, “Don’t get smart now, Y/N.” “Well, you could definitely benefit from getting smart. Don’t you think? You fake my death with a car accident and then send a video to NCIS of you with me, very much alive?” You arched a brow at him, “Not very smart-” He cut you off with a punch to the face, sending your chair, and you, to the floor.
*******
The next day while Jake was on base, he got an email sent to his phone. When he checked it and saw it was a video with you tied to a chair as a thumbnail.
“Maverick,” Jake didn’t hesitate to burst into his Captain’s office, not caring who may be in there. “Lieutenant-” “I need you to take me to NCIS.” (Jake was shaking too much to drive himself) Maverick stood, glancing at Warlock for a moment, “Why, Hangman?” Jake just turned his phone around and showed him the email.
Both Mav and Warlock looked at the phone. “Go, Captain, I’ll take over training for today.”
******
When they arrived, Jake had no hesitation to go right up to the squadroom.
“Lieutenant Seresin? What are you doing here?” McGee asked, being the first to see him. “Where’s Agent Gibbs?” Tony spun in his chair to get up, “Coffee run.”
He walked up to Hangman, “As senior field agent, I’d be more than happy to help.” Jake chuckled, tapping his palm with his phone, not really in the mood for putting up with Tony’s arrogance. “I’d prefer to speak to Agent Gibbs.” “Well, like I said, he’s not here. And I’m much better at-”
“At what, DiNozzo?” Gibbs said, standing next to the agent and the pilot as he sipped his coffee.
Tony stuttered to respond, making Jake smirk a little. “Have you ID’d the man Hannah met online?” “Not yet, boss.” “Then why are you standing here?” “Well, I was- uh- I was just- I’ll get right on that boss.”
Hangman and Maverick shared a look, before Gibbs spoke to them. “Lieutenant Seresin, I take it you have something for me?”
*******
“Well, you could definitely benefit from getting smart. Don’t you think? You fake my death with a car accident-”
“God, Medusa, stop talking…” Jake mumbled to himself. The group winced when you got punched in the face and your chair fell over.
Gibbs grunted a little, “Get this video to Abby. I want her to analyze every frame of that video. And who sent it to Lieutenant Seresin.” “On it, Boss,” McGee said, emailing it and then following his email.
Jake rubbed his face and sat down. He threw his head back and bit his lip. Maverick knelt down in front of him, “Hangman?”
Jake sniffed and looked down at his captain. “What is she thinkin’, Mav? Antagonizing him like that? That’s not how we were trained to handle situations like this.” “She’s not thinking, she’s just doing.” Jake scoffed, “As comforting as I assume that was supposed to be, it’s not even remotely easing my nerves.”
Ziva perked up, “Wait, what if she wasn’t taken because of the mission?” Tony nodded, “That would explain why she’s being so sassy. It’s not intel, it’s revenge”
*******
“Agent Gibbs!”
The crowd turned to the voice, seeing Director Vance upstairs. “SecNav would like to speak to you. MTAC now.”
As Gibbs made the stairs Vance noticed the two khaki uniforms in the squadroom, but simply nodded at them as they walked into MTAC.
“Agent Gibbs.” “Mister Secretary.” “One of the best naval aviators that just flew a high profile mission is missing. I was told you were on the case.” Gibbs nodded, “Yeah.” “Do you have any leads?” “No.” “Agent Gibbs, you do understand that if anything about that-” “He doesn’t care about the mission. He only cares about Lieutenant Abbott. It’s personal for him.” “So you know who he is?” Gibbs shook his head, “No, but based on the video sent to Lieutenant Seresin, he hasn’t asked any questions related to any mission.” SecNav nodded, “Okay. But Gibbs?” The marine raised a brow. “Get her back, the Navy needs her.”
*******
“You know, you ruined my life that day,” the masked man said as he played with his knife.
Your head lolled to the side, your exhaustion from the beatings taking a toll on you now. “What are you talking about?” “Do you not remember me?” He stood and you gritted your teeth as you forced your head up to look him in the eye. “Obviously not. Should I?” You winced as he pressed into a cut on your shoulder.
“Yeah, you should.” He pulled off his mask to reveal a face you haven’t seen since he got kicked out of the Academy.
“C-”
********
“Cole Cooke,” McGee said, pulling up Cooke’s old Naval Academy file. “Abby was able to find him because the email he used to send the video to Hangman, he used on an online dating site where he met Hannah.” Jake stood up, “Wait, Cooke?” The team parted to let him get a closer look.
The pilot's face morphed into anger.
Anger that the marine recognized.
“What’d he do, Lieutenant?” Jake had fire in his eyes when he looked at Gibbs. “He sexually assaulted her and three other girls. Y/N’s the one that reported him.” Tim nodded, “And that’s what got him kicked out of the Naval Academy and blacklisted from the military.” “He wasn’t arrested?” Jake clenched his jaw, “He was, but he got out on good behavior.”
Jake’s phone went off with a notification, an email to be more accurate.
He dropped it onto McGee’s desk. “I don’t understand, why would he send these to me?” “You’re her boyfriend, Lieutenant, this can just be another form of revenge. He wants to get back at her for reporting him and, in turn, ruining his chances at a military career,” Ziva said, crossing her arms as McGee transferred the videos.
“He ruined his career all on his own, Agent David. Y/N just got a scumbag out of the service,” Jake huffed rubbing his forehead. “Nobody liked him, he was cocky. Always thought he was better than he is.” Tony chuckled, “Isn’t that the main trait of a naval aviator?”
“They have something to back it up with, DiNozzo,” Gibbs said. “The only thing Cooke has to back him up is a record of being a dirtbag.”
He looked at McGee, “Play it.”
You looked worse than before and Jake felt sick to his stomach. “Oh my god.”
They watched him squat in front of you, twirling the knife he just cut you with in his hand. Jake’s jaw was clenched as he watched your head fall to the side as slow breaths made your chest move.
“You know, you ruined my life that day,” Cooke said. Your face scrunched in pain as you took a deep breath, “What are you talking about?” Cole stood and tipped your head back with a harsh grip on your chin, “Do you not remember me?” You scoffed, “Obviously not. Should I?” He moved the hand holding your chin to press into the cut he had just placed here, making you wince. “Yeah, you should,” he ripped his mask off.
The look on your face Jake had only seen one other time and it was when you came to his dorm crying.
********
The banging pulled Jake from his book.
“Hold your horses!” He pulled the door open, coming face to face with you crying and looking absolutely terrified. “Sugar what’s wrong?”
Your hands were shaking as you showed him your knuckles, bruised and cut up.
“I-I didn’t want– I told him I had a boyfriend- Ja-ake,” you broke down outside his door. “Hey, hey, I got you. You’re safe now.” You swallowed, “Jake, I need to go to the superintendent-the dean-someone.”
He pulled you into his room to get you out of the prying eyes of other midshipmen. “Why? I need you to-” He finally took in your appearance, you were wearing a disheveled USNA t-shirt and athletic shorts. Bruises were forming on your wrist and your eye and lip. “What the fuck happened to you?”
“You remember last semester when those two girls dropped out for no reason?” He nodded, “Yeah, the two freshman girls right?” You nodded, swallowing another wave of tears away. “I found out why…” Jake searched your eyes, “Why, Y/N?”
*****
“Cole Cooke…”
Jake was brought back to the present by your voice.
Cole laughed, pushing your shoulder, “That’s right, Y/N. Cole Cooke, the man’s who military career you ruined.” It was your turn to laugh, “Me? Ruin your career? You assaulted me! And those two first years! They quit because they were scared of you! Scared because you threatened to kill them if they told anyone!”
He punched you, sending you falling back. He grabbed you by the rope under your breast. “And you’re not scared that I’ll do the same to you now?”
You held your head up to look at him, blood pouring from your nose. “I would lie and say ‘no’. But guess what?” “What?” He spat through gritted teeth. You smiled with blood stained teeth, “I put you in jail once. It’s almost poetic that I’d do it again. Except this time, there won’t be a chance you’ll make it out.”
Cole growled and they all noticed his posture change, “Let’s play a game, Lieutenant.” You shifted forward to get in his face, gaze stone cold, “What do you suggest, Cooke?” The team could feel the venom dripping off your tone. “Hangman.”
The video stopped on the frame of your face falling once again to show fear, and the team turned to face the pilot who looked equally worried and pissed.
*****
You were hanging from the ceiling, your chin resting against your chest.
The door to the room you were in opened. You whimpered just a little when he brushed his fingers against your bruised ribs, “You didn’t hurt him, did you? Please… You can do whatever you want to me, but please leave Jake out of this…”
Cole hummed in your ear, “Anything I want, hmmm?” You glanced at the camera, before looking at the ground shamefully. A shaky and timid ‘yes’ fell from your lips. He let out an amused huff before his hands ran over your shirtless torso.
*****
Jake felt bile rise up his throat when you looked down in shame.
“What’s he gonna do to her?” McGee asked. Gibbs frowned, “What he tried to do 12 years ago.”
The anger and disgust rolled off the agents as Cooke’s hands ran down your body. When he got to your breast you jerked away out of reflex, earning a pull to your hair which made you cry out.
You were getting weaker by the hour and the team could tell. Jake could tell, and he hated it.
“You know, you only had the one tattoo at the academy,” he said, groping at the inked flesh of your thigh. Jake watched your lip quiver and you inhaled as best you could with your position. “I also found your back, extremely enticing,” Cooke ran his hand down your back. You gritted your teeth and looked behind you at him, “Is that because you’re too much of a coward to attack women from the front?”
That must have really pissed him off because he came around and started to punch you.
Jake stood up hastily and made a beeline to the elevator, “I can’t watch this anymore.”
Tony jogged after him, “Lieutenant Seresin! Hangman-” The doors closed when he got to them.
******
Jake just needed to get away and he was going to Abby’s lab.
When he stopped on her floor, he moved quickly to her lab but nearly ran into Ducky in the process. “I’m sorry, Doctor.” “In a hurry, Jacob?” Hangman chuckled nervously, “Yeah.” “Needed a breather, my boy?” “Sir?” “I saw the videos as Abby was analyzing them.”
Jake felt bile rise again and this time he couldn’t stop it. Ducky noticed and quickly helped him get to a trash can.
“Let’s get you someplace cooler,” Ducky ushered Jake back to the elevator.
******
Jake sat on one of the metal tables in Autopsy.
His khaki uniform shirt was neatly folded next to him as he sipped his water. “Thank you, Ducky.” The doctor nodded, “Of course. It can’t be easy, seeing the one you love like that. Jake coughed a little, trying to force the emotion out of his throat, “It’s not.”
Ducky watched his eyes fall to his shoes, he could tell he felt guilty. “It’s not your fault, Lieutenant.” “I hesitated, Ducky. And since I hesi-” His voice cracked, tears finally slipping past his lids. “Since I hesitated she's having to relive the worst day of her life.”
Jake set the bottle down and used his white undershirt to wipe his eyes, “How long have you been together?” “Over 15 years…” Ducky nodded in understanding, “High school sweethearts.” Jake huffed out a laugh, “Childhood friends to high school sweethearts to USNA sweethearts.”
“Forgive me if I’m overstepping, but why aren’t you married?” Jake shrugged, “I don’t know. I guess it’s because we were already acting like a married couple, just without the license and the rings. I never thought about it.” Jake laughed and shook his head.
It was silent for a moment.
“She asked me if I was ever gonna marry her, and I hesitated. It was a question she asks me all the time, but this was the only time it was during a fight. It was the only time that my answer really mattered. And I hesitated… She left and was in a vulnerable enough state to let herself get taken.”
Ducky leaned on the table next to Jake, “Cooke was going to get to her one way or another.” “But I led her right to him.”
Jake looked at the doctor next to him, allowing Ducky to see how broken and tired he was. “I’m scared, Doctor Mallard.” “That’s perfectly normal, Jacob.” “I'm a damn fighter pilot, I’m supposed to be level headed, and right now… my head doesn’t even feel like it’s on my damn shoulders.”
“It’s normal to feel like that, Jake,” Gibbs said, leaning on the doorframe.
He walked over to the pilot, “She’s strong. She’s gonna fight to get back to you.” Jake rose a brow, sniffling as wiped his eyes, “Did you see her, Agent Gibbs? He was using her like a punching bag…” “She will make it out of this.” “How do you know?” “My gut.”
That was oddly comforting to Jake.
“Do you know the mythology behind Medusa?” Ducky inquired after a beat of silence. Jake chuckled again, remembering the nights throughout your lives that you would stay up and talk about mythology of all sorts for fun. Sometimes when he was having trouble sleeping, you’d tell him the story of some hero in mythology and he’d fall right asleep.
He sighed, “We’ve stayed up hours talking about mythology. But if I’m honest, I never really heard the words she said…” Both men knew what Jake was getting at; he was listening to your voice and watching your expressions as you told the stories.
Ducky just smiled, “Medusa was a priestess for Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war strategy, and had sworn celibacy. However, Medusa had gained the attention of Poseidon, and they-” “Had sex in Athena’s temple,” Jake said as he sipped his water. “That much I remember.” Both Gibbs and Ducky laughed a little at that.
“When Athena found out, she punished Medusa for breaking her celibacy by turning her into a ‘beast’ with the ability to turn men to stone.” Jake nodded, “Yeah, Y/N has the tendency to do that, whether it be with fear or with her beauty.” Jake couldn’t help but smile at the memory of him seeing you on prom night for the first time, he froze on your parents doorstep.
Ducky and Gibbs smiled as they saw the look in Jake’s eyes as he thought about you.
“She was killed by the hero Perseus, beheaded. Then her head was then used to protect those who had it in their possession. The image of her head was used on shields, breast plates, and more recently, tattoos.” Jake remembered you mentioning that as he held your hand as you got it, “She mentioned that when she got it. She was getting it because she thought it looked cool, makes her feel powerful; but she likes the extra meaning.”
Ducky rested a hand on Jake’s shoulder, “I know it may not look like it, but she is protecting herself.” Jake took in a deep breath and nodded.
********
They walked back into the squad room, the group sitting at their desks and making conversation.
“Go home,” Gibbs told them.
It was late. They’d been out all day talking to Cooke’s neighbors, his parents, his boss and coworkers. And the last video was sent just after sundown.
They were tired.
“But we haven’t found-” “I know that, Ziva.” McGee spoke up, “Abby’s trying to analyze the room she is in so we know what to look for. I tried to triangulate where he sent the emails from, but he was using public wifi at an internet cafe.” “We have no direction to go, Boss,” Tony said, not being able to look at Jake.
Gibbs turned to DiNozzo, “Which is why I’m telling you to go home. Get some rest.” Ziva inhaled through her nose and interlocked her hands, “Gibbs, we don’t know what Cooke is going to do next. We have zero time to waste.” “If Cooke wanted her dead, he would have killed her already,” Jake said, jaw clenched with his eyes trained on the floor. “Believe me, I’m worried. Hell, I’m terrified out of my mind right now.-”
“But we can’t make progress without leads. Cooke lives in a studio apartment, his parents disowned him, and he’s not shown up to work in days, we don’t have anything,” Gibbs said, frustration in his tone. “Go home, get some sleep.” His team begrudgingly got their things, all avoiding Jake’s eyes.
“You should get some sleep too, Lieutenant.” Jake chuckled dryly as he shook his head, “I don’t think I can, sir.” He ran his thumbs along the khaki of his uniform.
Plus Maverick had left, needing to be back on base. The only way Jake was getting back to base was by cab. Maverick also gave him as much time off as he needed.
“But- uh, I better head back to base though.” “In what, Lieutenant?” Jake shrugged, “A cab, I guess.” Gibbs shook his head, “Stay with me, Jake. It’s late. And I doubt you want to be in that house right now.” Hangman looked down at the floor, huffing out his nose and tonguing his lip.
“I know how you feel.” Jake looked up, green eyes swimming with curiosity as his brows pinched together. “When I was in Desert Storm, I was informed that my wife and daughter were dead. It was hard to even walk into my house, let alone sleep there.” Jake’s eyes widened slightly and he swallowed as his jaw ticked, “I’m sorry, sir. I can’t imagine what that must have felt like…” Gibbs nodded, “And I hope you never have to.” He patted Jake's shoulder, “Come on.”
******
Gibbs gave Jake a pair of sweats to change into.
They went to his basement, neither being able to sleep.
“So, you’re a Marine?” Jake asked, sipping his bourbon. “What gave it away?” Gibbs asked, smiling a little bit as he sanded the wood of the boat. “Other than you being in Desert Storm?” Gibbs turned, wiping his hands on a damp towel, nodding. “Everything.”
The marine let out a breathy, amused chuckle. “You know a lot of marines?” “I was raised by one. My father retired when I was 4 as a Sergeant, he was 38.” Gibbs sipped his bourbon, “Why’d he retire?” “Wanted to be there for us. He had a close call, he didn’t want to risk not coming home to us. His 20 years were up, so he retired.”
Gibbs nodded, looking at the boat before looking back at Jake. “You wanna help?” Jake looked up from his glass and between the boat and Gibbs. “Sure, yeah.” He downed what was left and Gibbs gave him a sander.
*******
Since Jake didn’t need to report to base, he just freshened up and Gibbs took him by the base rental to get some clothes.
He had forgotten his keys in his locker and had to call someone to bring them to him at the house. That someone was Rooster.
Jake got out of Gibb’s car and saw Bradley on the porch. He was sitting on the bench, one fist held by the other as he looked at the ground. Maverick had gotten permission to relay what had happened to you to the squad, and everyone had taken it hard.
Rooster looked up when Hangman shut his car door.
They immediately met in a hug. “I’m so sorry, Jake.” “I’m scared, Rooster. I didn’t even-” Bradley pulled back and held Jake by the shoulders, “Hey, they’re gonna find her. Say it to her then.”
Gibbs came up beside them, nodding at Rooster before they went inside.
Jake didn’t want to be there longer than he needed to be so once it was opened, he booked it to the bedroom.
Bradley and Gibbs stood at the island in the kitchen. “They didn’t decorate much.” Rooster shrugged, looking around, “We aren’t here for long. They didn’t see the need to bring a whole lot.” “If you aren’t here for long, then why’d they rent the house?” Rooster chuckled, “They wanted their privacy.” Gibbs chuckled and glanced at his watch.
Hangman was taking longer than he said.
Gibbs went down the hall and found Jake sitting on the side of the bed. He had changed into a pair of his own sweatpants and a green t-shirt. Jethro knew what he was looking at, even with his back to him and from the door.
“Ask her.”
Jake chuckled humorlessly, “After this…” He shook his head, “I doubt she'll say yes.” “Ah, I don’t know about that.” Hangman sniffled, “I messed up…” Gibbs nodded, moving to sit next to him. “Yeah, you did, big time.” Jake shook his head.
“But this is how you fix it.” Gibbs pointed to the ring box. Jake swallowed, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand, “I wanted to wait, ask her on my family's ranch where we had danced in my headlights to George Strait. I had this big plan. Just a private thing, but special…” “Plans change. Sometimes you have to adapt.” “Yeah.” “So ask her.”
Jake turned and looked at him, nodding at him. He stood from the bed and slid the box into his pocket. He grabbed the small stack of clothes next him and they left.
“Agent Gibbs?” Gibbs and Jake looked over at where Bradley was at his Bronco. “When you find her, give us a call?” The agent nodded, “Yeah, I’ll give ya a call.”
*******
When Jake and Gibbs got to NCIS, nothing had changed yet.
No new video. Abby was still working on room measurements, and no one had seen Cole.
Until McGee’s computer went off. Everyone’s head turned, and Jake felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. “It’s Cooke.” “Pull the video up McGee.”
You were still hanging from the ceiling, Cole running his hands over your torso.
The camera was a little closer, and it showed the tear tracks on your face.
“You know,” you spoke, voice shaky and raw. “I’m gonna need a drink after this. Yeah, whiskey sounds really nice.” Cole just grunted and pulled you back against him. You whimpered a little bit, definitely feeling gross because of what was happening. “Or an Oscar. Maybe two.”
“The hell’s an oscar?” Tony asked out of reflex, glancing at Jake, but he was just as confused.
Cole grunted into your neck, “Shut up.” “Have you ever been to the delta?” He stayed silent but reached over to yank the rope and pull you up higher. You swallowed, glancing at the camera, “Me either, but I’ve been to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I went there with Hangman on a weekend getaway after a rough deployment. My uncle has a cabin up there. God, that weekend was so fun. I love Jake, I love him so much…” You kept your eyes on the camera to make sure that Jake knew that you’d love him. The video stopped just as Cooke pulled your hair back, making you yelp.
Jake cleared his throat, nodded, “Yeah, that weekend was fun… Wait, we didn't go to the Sierras; we weren’t even in California, we were in Arkansas.” Gibbs caught Jake’s eyes and that’s when they realized it.
“She’s using phonetics!”
The team's eyes grew wide in realization. “Whiskey, Oscar, Delta, Sierra,” McGee repeated. “W O D S?” Ziva spelled it out. “She said two oscars,” Tony pointed out.
“She’s in the woods,” Gibbs finished for them. Jake thought back to what you said, “She put emphasis on ‘cabin’.” “DiNozzo, check to see if Cooke’s parents owned or still own a cabin.” “On it Boss.”
His phone rang, “Yeah, Gibbs.” “Gibbs, I ran the measurement of the room. She seems to be in a cabin. Based on the dimensions it’s a family cabin, probably two or three bedrooms.”
“Boss, it seems Cooke’s parents own a lot of cabins,” Tony said just as Gibbs picked up his phone. “Did you narrow it down to Virginia?” McGee asked, brow arched. “Yes, McGeek, I did. Mr. Cooke owns two hunting cabins and a-” “Family cabin, two or three bedrooms,” Gibbs cut in.
“Yeah, they haven’t used it in years. It’s in Fletcher State Park.” Gibbs got up, “Get your gear, let’s go.” Jake watched them all grab their things.
“Agent David,” he called out before she got too far. “Yes, Lieutenant?” Jake grabbed the clothes he brought. “Here,” he held them out. “She’s in nothing but a bra and underwear, give her these.” Ziva hesitated to take it. “Please.” She heard the desperation in his voice and took them.
She went over to Tony and Tim. “You know, despite the odds, we may not-” “We will find her alive,” she glanced at the fabrics in her hands. “We have to.”
*******
You yanked down on the rope, crying out a little at the pain in your dislocated shoulder. You had honestly been scared of losing feeling in your hands, but he gave you a bit of a break when he was finished hurting you for the day and left you locked in one of the bedroom closets.
Your toes barely scraped the ground and the rope wasn’t going anywhere. You shivered in the cold damp air of the cabin. Only being in your underwear, the chill soaked into your bones. You were certain that if you didn’t die of whatever Cooke was doing to you, you might die from the cold.
Hearing tires outside the cabin, your heart sped up. You could only huff out small breaths as you heard footsteps outside the door on the porch.
It was his routine to get you set up for his next sick video, film it, and then leave to send it. You’d calculated the time it took for him to get back and it was getting close for time to him to be back.
But then there was banging on the door, followed by a gruff voice yelling, “NCIS!”
Your entire body relaxed. You were safe.
“I’m in here! Help me!” You called back, coughing a little.
The door frame splintered when the door was kicked in. “Lieutenant Abbott?” The agent asked, pistol drawn as he walked over to you.“Yes,” you breathed out. “Where’s Cooke?” You shook your head, “I don’t know but he’ll be back soon.”
“Please get me down from here. It’s hard to breathe,” you begged, tears of relief falling down your cheeks. You jerked your neck towards where Cole had secured the rope, “Ease me down, please.”
McGee was quick to loosen the rope and Ziva helped steady you once your feet were on the ground. “Can you walk?” She asked, gently placing her hand on your sternum. “I think so. I might need a little help.” The agent simply nodded and helped you outside.
Once you were outside the uneven ground and rocks caused you to stumble. Tim moved to help Ziva steady you but he jostled your dislocated shoulder. “Shit!” McGee looked panicked, “What’s wrong?” You gritted your teeth, “My shoulder, it’s dislocated. I tried to break the rope and pulled it out.”
You chuckled a little at his expression, “Hurt like a bitch. Can either of you pop it back in?” Ziva nodded and leaned you against the car. She got a proper grip and looked at you, “Ready?” You swallowed and nodded. She exaggerated a few breaths and when you matched she popped it back in.
“Holy shit! Sweet baby Jesus..”
You pushed off the car and threw up; all the pain catching up to you with the adrenaline rush. Ziva came up and held your hair out of your face.
Spitting out the last of the saliva in your mouth, you thanked her under your breath.
A coat was wrapped around your shoulders. You looked to see Gibbs rubbing your shoulder, a small smile on his face.
His fatherly nature was present and it allowed you to be vulnerable, finally allowing yourself to outright sob; mostly in relief. You fell into his chest and he caught you, hands moving to rub your back. He mumbled into your hair, “You’re safe. I got ya. I got ya.”
The sound of gravel shifting caught their attention.
Gibbs felt you tense under his touch, “Is that him?” You nodded, whimpering a little bit. He looked at Ziva, “Stay with her, cover the front. DiNozzo, McGee, go find cover on the right, I’ll get cover on the left. You’ll know what to do.”
Carefully, Gibbs placed you in Ziva’s hold and she placed you in the car for both warmth and cover.
When Cole finally reached the cabin, Ziva raised her weapon. “Cole Cooke! NCIS! Get out of the car-” He threw it in reverse just to be stopped by Tony and Tim. He tried to get out and make a break for the tree line but Gibbs stepped out. He quickly surrendered and was handcuffed.
With you in a separate vehicle they made the trip back to NCIS.
********
Jake paced the squad room. Abby was up there with him, trying to keep him calm.
He was mumbling things to himself out of worry and Abby was following him, trying to grab him by the shoulders. “Jake. Jake. Ja-”
She finally got a hold of him, and ducked her head a little bit to make sure he was looking at her.
“Jake, they will find her. They’re the best there is. I’m sure they already found her and are either on their way here or to a hospital.” Jake frowned, “She hates hospitals, especially being in them alone.” Abby shook her head, “She isn’t alone. Gibbs wouldn’t let her be alone. Y/N is safe, I can feel it.” Jake just nodded, slowly calming down.
The elevators dinged and he was on his feet, nearly giving himself whiplash as he turned.
But when he did all he saw was red.
Cooke was being escorted out in handcuffs by Tony and McGee. Abby couldn’t hold Jake back as he swiftly made his way over and landed a punch to Cole’s jaw. Neither agent bothered to stop the pilot as the one punch sent Cooke to the ground.
But as he went in for more, Gibbs gripped Jake and pulled him away. He had to fight Jake back to the bullpen, but he got him there.
“That asshole just punched me!” McGee and DiNozzo huffed as they harshly yanked him off the ground. “You’re lucky that’s all he did.” They dragged him to interrogation.
Jake’s nostrils flared as he exhaled, his chest still broadened in his display of dominance over Cole.
However, the adrenaline wore off as quickly as it appeared and Jake felt tears line his eyes. He hung his head and fell into a chair. He pressed the heels of his palms into his eyes, sobs leaving his lips. “I wasn’t there the first time, and I wasn’t there this time… I can’t believe I-” Abby cut him off, “Don’t finish that sentence, Jake. Because you are here, you were there the first time. She ran to you, you are her safe place.” “But-”
He was cut off the elevator ding again.
Glancing up, his heart soared in his chest.
There you were. Standing right before him in an old Longhorn sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. You were clean from the dirt and dried blood, having used the showers to clean up after any evidence was collected.
Your arm was in a sling and some butterfly closures adorned your forehead. But even then, you were still the most beautiful girl in the world to him.
*****
You walked quietly with Ziva out of the elevator, the weight of the conversation you had with her and Ducky still sitting on your shoulders.
The sound of a chair rolling back and hitting a desk caught your attention.
Looking up, you saw Jake and once again, you were crying; both from relief and the realization you almost never saw him again.
You moved as fast as you could to get to him, slamming your beaten body into his when you got to him. His arms carefully wrapped around you, obviously not wanting to hurt you. But when your soft crying exhales hit his chest, he all but scooped you into his arms carefully wrapping your legs around his torso.
You winced a little when his arm tightened around your waist. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” he immediately apologized. You pulled your head out of the crook of his neck, shaking it lightly before looking into his eyes, “It reminds me this isn’t just another dream.”
Jake closed his eyes, tears falling down his cheeks as he rested his forehead against yours. “Jacob, if you don’t-” He cut off your sentence with a kiss, it was slow but no less passionate. He was gentle, the arm wrapped around your shoulders bringing you closer to him.
Ziva, Gibbs, and Abby watched on with smiles. Tim and Tony walked in mid conversation, but stopped seeing the intimate moment happening in the squad room.
You had to pull back for air at some point. And when you did, you rested your forehead against Jake’s, both of your eyes closing with the contact.
“Marry me.”
Your eyes shot open and were met with Jake’s green ones.
You had said it at the same time.
A grin broke out on your face, “I hope you aren’t just askin’ me that-” Your tease was cut off by Jake, “I’m not. I-I had this big plan. I wanted to take you out to the pasture we danced in on prom night our senior year.” You giggled a little, “That would have been nice.”
Biting your lip you played with the hair at the nape of his neck.
“I had a lot of time to think over the past few days,” you said quietly, your breath ghosting over his lips. He nudged your nose with his. “So have I. And I’m sorry I never asked you sooner.” “Let me finish, will ya?” You chuckled lightly and he did as well. “I realized that proposing, nowadays, is a two way street. I could have asked you at any time and you would have said ‘yes’. We’ve been together since we were 15, Jake. Friends since we were born. We should have gotten married right out of high school, but we were scared of what our future held during the Academy and then flight school, then through separate deployments. It was too much to worry about at once, and we didn’t know what was gonna happen.”
You licked your lips and inhaled a little, “But I can’t go another damn day without legally being your wife. Those bitches at the bar aside. I just, I want others to know that you're mine and that I’m yours.” He nodded, “Okay, let’s do it.” You giggled and kissed him, “Alright cowboy.”
He sat you down and pulled out the ring box.
“Wait, you had that this whole time?” Jake rubbed the back of his neck, “Like I said, I had this whole plan. I was gonna ask you after we got some time off when we got back to North Island.” You laughed, “You perfectionist.” You peck his lips and he slid the ring on your finger.
You heard a squeal from behind you and you both looked around to see the entire Gibbs team smiling at you and Jake.
“Thank you, for getting her back to me. All of you.”
