Y como si fuese poco, fue miembro del Long Range Desert Group (LRDG), sirviendo en el Norte de África y en otros escenarios durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Necesitaríamos mil vidas para hacer un cuarto de lo que este cabrón hizo. Sir Christopher Lee era hijo de un banquero londinense y de una condesa de ascendencia italiana. Pariente lejano del general Lee de la Guerra Civil estadounidense por parte de padre y descendiente de Carlomagno por la parte materna (sí, Carlomagno).

Durante su juventud aprendió esgrima, a cantar ópera -su bisabuela materna era Marie Carandini, de profesión prima donna- y a dominar varios idiomas a la perfección, como acabamos de mencionar.

Por el camino, como no tenía nada más importante que hacer, se presentó voluntario en la guerra ruso-finlandesa de 1939 para enfrentar a los rojos, pero no le dejaron combatir: se tuvo que volver a Inglaterra porque había un peligro que requería la atención de su 1,96 metros de altura: la guerra contra Alemania

Fue así que este hombre se enroló en la Royal Air Force, pero no para volar, sino para participar de unas cuantas operaciones de inteligencia y luego para servir en el Special Air Service, el SAS, una de las unidades de comandos más emblemática de la historia. ¿Qué hizo allí? Entre otras asignaciones, participó en operaciones del LRDG, el germen de las unidades de comandos creado en Egipto en 1940. Se dedicaban, entre otras cosas, a infiltrarse detrás de las líneas enemigas -sin tanques, sin apoyo aéreo, sin más que unos jeeps con una ametralladora gigante, turbantes, una daga Fairbairn–Sykes en la cintura y gente muy peligrosa.

"Formé parte de los SAS pero tenemos prohibido -pasado, presente y futuro- hablar de detalles específicos de las operaciones. Digamos que estuve en las Fuerzas Especiales y dejémoslo ahí. Que la gente interprete lo que quiera." Trabajó en las sombras con los partisanos y mucho no se concoce de su servicio; pero los gobiernos checo, yugoslavo, inglés y polaco lo condecoraron y fue un buen amigo de Josip Broz "Tito", así que saca tus propias conclusiones... Luego de la retirada del Afrikakorps en mayo de 1943, Lee fue enviado a Libia para la preparación de la invasión de Sicilia y luego a Malta. Después de la campaña de Sicilia, Lee enfermó con malaria por sexta vez en un año y fue enviado a un hospital en Cartago.

Terminada la invasión de Italia, el unidad de Lee fue estacionada en Foggia y Termoli durante el invierno de 1943. Lee fue trasladado temporalmente al Ejército en un intercambio de oficiales y pasó la mayor parte del tiempo con los gurkhas de la 8ª División de Infantería India durante la batalla de Montecassino. Fue estacionado en San Angelo donde Lee se salvo de morir al aterrizar su avión y tropezar con una bomba sin explotar que se encontraba en la pista. Después, durante un período de franco escaló el Vesubio justo antes que erupcionara tres días después.

La unidad de Lee fue trasladada a las afueras de Roma y allí tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a Nicola Carradino, primo de su madre, que estuvo luchando con la resistencia. Lee fue ascendido a capitán y fue a trabajar en la planificación del ataque a la Fortaleza Alpina.

Como hablaba seis idiomas, luego de finalizada la guerra fue incorporado al SOE junto con su primo Ian Fleming, en investigación y cacería de criminales de guerra, hechos sobre los que, después de la guerra, nunca quiso hacer comentario alguno.

Así es: Lee y su primo Ian Fleming participaron en la SOE, una unidad de espionaje de la que el segundo sacaría la idea para James Bond. Hasta el punto de que presionaría a Hollywood para que fichasen a Lee como Bond, al que veía como el actor ideal para el papel. No lo consiguió, porque consideraron que sólo lo hacía por su relación familiar. Eso sí, Lee fue uno de los mejores villanos de Bond: Francisco Scaramanga, El Hombre de la Pistola de Oro. Él era ese hombre.

"He visto a muchos hombres morir frente a mí, tantos de hecho que casi me he endurecido. Habiendo visto lo peor que los seres humanos pueden hacerse unos a otros, los resultados de la tortura, la mutilación y ver a alguien hecho pedazos por una bomba, desarrollas una especie de caparazón. Christopher Lee era un personaje que vivió una vida muy intensa y pudo experimentar en carne propia hechos que muy pocas personas pueden siquiera imaginar durante su vida. Se cuenta que el director Peter Jackson en la película "El retorno del rey", al filmar la escena de su muerte le comenzó a explicar con detalles a Lee cómo debía escucharse a una persona cuando era apuñalada por la espalda, Lee lo interrumpió diciéndole que él había visto personas apuñaladas por al espalda y sabía exactamente que sonidos emitían.

En 1997 fue nombrado Comandante de la Venerable Orden de Saint John. En 2001 fue nombrado Comandante de la Orden de las Artes y Letras por el gobierno francés. En 2009 fue nombrado por la reina Comandante Caballero de la Más Excelente Orden del Imperio Británico. En el ámbito artístico recibió muchos otros premios y galardones, incluyendo un premio Guinness... Aparte de sus innumerables películas es recordado por su incursión en la música como cantante, siendo una de las más reconocidas la ópera-sinfónica "Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross", que grabó cuando tenía 88 años de edad junto a otros artistas. Sir Christopher Lee murió en Chelsea, Londres, debido a deficiencia respiratoria por lo que le sobrevino un ataque cardiaco, el 7 de junio de 2015 a la edad de 93 años.
