Titane

Following a strange series of crimes and pregnancy, a father is reunited with his "son" who has been missing for 10 years.

Winner of this year's Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, I was kinda interested in seeing this film. Many critics describe it as one of the wildest films that have come out this year. I went into this film completely blind with my expectations open. After watching this film, I still don't know what to think of it.

Director Julia Ducournau has crafted a film that delves into body horror, sexual fetishes, and cross-dressing. This film is horrifying, disturbing, and quite awkward to watch. The body horror is horrifying to watch. The car sex scenes were equally as disturbing. Ducournau absolutely nailed the horror aspect of this genre.

Whether or not this film is your cup of tea, you must praise the acting in this film. Agathe Rousselle make her acting debut in this film. Safe to say she leaves a hell of an impact on this film because she is fantastic. She perfectly portrays the serial killer who is trying to evade police by cross-dressing. Furthermore, her having to come to terms with her mysterious pregnancy was interesting, to say the least. Another great performance was Vincent Lindon. He perfectly portrays a delusional man who is looking for his son in the wrong places. Lindon brings a strange balance between his and Rousselle characters, which was fascinating at many points. He also brings a lot of comedic relief which was needed in this film. The acting from the remaining of the cast was also great.

Another positive aspect is that this film is beautifully shot. The colors in this film are both vibrant and dull depending upon the scene. The color choices uses, greatly dictate the mood present in the scene.

An aspect of this film that frustrated me a bit is that it feels like it's two different movies. Yes, it is plausible for a serial killer to disguise themselves as someone's missing son, but this film did not pull that transition off very well. The first 30 or so minutes of the film is our killer on a killing spree and on the run. Then it switches to her cross-dressing as someone else. The first 30 minutes are filled with disturbing scenes, but when this transition happens that kinda fades away. You get a horror scene every once and a while but it mostly stretches out in between. Part of me wishes that it would have stayed with either one of these routes or at least blended them together better.

All in all, Titane is not going to be for everyone. Still almost 24 hours after watching this film, I still don't know what to think of it. However, I will state that Julia Ducournau pulls off the body horror spectacularly in this film. It's disturbing and grotesque. This film essentially comes down to if it's your cup of tea or not.

I am giving Titane, I have no idea.
