Another moose (C17) I caught with a tagline at the nose - “Go for Broke”. A great motivational tagline to adopt for the new year. 👍👍💪💪 This C17 from the Hawaii Air National Guard is one of a number of C17s with commemorative nose taglines. “Go for broke” was the motto for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in WW2 which was composed of almost entirely 2nd generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry. Most of these Japanese-American soldiers were from Hawaii. They served with distinction in WW2 becoming the most decorated combat unit in US military history. Considering the discrimination their family members faced being interned in concentration camps in the US during that time, these soldiers went all out to prove their loyalty, bravery and fighting qualities. My husband, 2 girls and his parents before being deployed to Kuwait in 2019.

Little did I know this was the start of Trevor's battle with Gastrointestial Stromal Tumor.

He came home from this deployment, and we discovered a mass on his stomach. The doctor was able to remove the mass, but fast forward to April 2023 and it has returned. He now has 9 tumors growing in his abdomen. He has started 4th line treatment called Qinlock and we are thankful that his first scan showed his tumors shrinking. I'm putting that in the win category.

During this ordeal, the military denied his line of duty and stated that his gastric cancer was not service connected. This caused our family to miss out on benefits such as Tricare Insurance. We have insurance, but we still get nailed with out-of-pocket expenses galore.

The military needs to take better care of our vets. The VA has approved him as 100% disabled thanks to the PACT act that will automatically service connect a variety of medical disorders related to burn pit exposure. Gastric cancer of any type is on that list and Trevor was exposed to the burn pits in Iraq. He served 23 years in the Air National Guard. He wore the uniform to work daily and maintained F-15s, F-16s and C-130s.

Christmas post inspired by a true blue sourdough. I understand old, grizzled Alaskans are known as “Sourdoughs” in homage to the prospectors, miners, and trappers that explored Alaska. In their journey, these frontiersmen often carried with them sourdough as the legend goes. Glad to have caught this special themed wolf-tailed 🐺 Alaskan moose (C17 Globemaster III) that is dedicated to the ‘Spirit of the Sourdoughs’. 💪💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🍞🍞 Completes the pairing with my die-cast model of a sister aircraft (00-0185) from the same squadron (3rd picture in post). This northern visitor hails from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, primarily in support of US Pacific Forces. Under the associate unit organisational structure, it is a shared asset between the Alaska Air National Guard and active USAF 144th/517th Airlift Squadrons, 3rd/176th Air Mobility Wings. Wolf pack and firebirds unite. The 2nd picture shows my collection of patches for both units in which this moose is associated with.
