📚 How many layers do you typically use?

1 for sketch, 1 for lines, maybe 3 for flat colors (paint by numbers style where i try not to have any of the big patches of color touching), and then an equal amount for shading (clipped multiply layers my beloved), and then one or two for background! if it is something more involved then there will probably be more for colors, and i love going ham with glow effects, but for a smaller thing this is the gist!

happy (late) storyteller saturday! what's your character's living space like? do they keep it clean or is it cluttered and chaotic? what's the first thing people generally notice about it?

Happy (very late) answer!

I think I’m going to project onto Ash a little bit and say her room is tidy enough, but she definitely has clothes on surfaces because it’s more convenient. I don’t think she spends enough time in her room to actually notice and get annoyed by the clothes to do something about it?

Like she would come in, change into pajamas and sleep, and then leave for work again upon waking up. Leaving the pajamas on her bed or on a chair is easier than anything else.

The first thing people might notice about her room is the floral curtains on the window. That seems entirely out of character for her, but her grandmother made them so she keeps them up.

… This ask also made me realize Zach might share a room with at least one of his siblings. Something else I can project onto him lol

I've been thinking for ages I wanna look into trying some out for myself but I never have any idea where to start... can I get some recs maybe, if you're up for it? :D maybe your favourites or good ones to start with for beginners? OH MY GOD YEAH

I've literally downloaded so many, itch.io bundles are my absolute WEAKNESS. But actually though, they run charity bundles all the time and there are ALWAYS a few absolutely brilliant ones in there.

First and foremost, my absolute all time favorite is Thousand Year Old Vampire by Tim Hutchings. It absolutely blew me away when I first played it, and was actually the starting point for one of my current WIPs! (If you see me talking about Verity ever, that's the bitch). It's so sad and beautiful and a wonderful way to get started.

If you're a fantasy nerd (specifically fae nerd), I recommend My Welcomed Guest by Dawn Bear Games, which is about a person who gets trapped in a sort-of Feywild and has tea with a member of the fae who might want to kill them.

I also adore It Is Written by Peach Garden Games, which is about a fortune teller who falls in love with the person they're telling the fortune of, Pilgrimage of the Sun Guard by Amanda P. where you play as a knight on a quest trying to uphold your own moral code, and A Visit to San Sibilia by JimmyShelter, where you play a character visiting a city that isn't found on any maps and is always changing.

I could truly talk about these forever, and I probably will. I have so much to thank journaling games for as far as getting me back to feeling confident in my writing and ability to generate stories. If none of these vibe with you, please let me know and I will simply recommend at least a dozen more, because I own over 1,500 games on itch.io at this point, and a LARGE percentage of them are TTRPGs!

🧠 - What do you like most about the OC?

Lmao as terrible as this sounds... He's fun to pick on. Not in a "I like bullying him" kind of vibe, but more like "You are a shitty person who takes advantage of others and maybe you regret it now and you're trying to fix that now, but I'm not gonna feel bad when something bad happens to you. You are the true butt-monkey of this chronicle."

Javier is the character I tell my Storyteller to not regret putting in Situations™ because he could stand to build some character and have the opportunity to Do Better™.

At the same time, I recognize Javier is a product of his trauma, and I'm curious to see if he manages to break the cycle of abuse that was inflicted on him. Man needs therapy, but that's a little hard to come by when you're undead. All he really has to turn to are the vestiges of his Catholic faith from his living days and by extension, his Humanity.

Where's a vampire psychologist when you need one?

🌂 - What genre do they belong in?

Javier is an Anti-Villain and tends to make the lives of those around him worse. Becoming prey to a vampire who turned him against his consent means he is Damned from the Start and ultimately it makes his story a Tragedy. Especially since he still naively holds onto the private hope that perhaps, if he prays enough, confesses enough, does something worthwhile... maybe God will keep save him from his hellbound fate.

But Javier isn't even sure if the Beast that that dug its claws into his cold, dead heart is a consequence of the vampiric curse that plagues him... or his own true, twisted self.

Emmy:

🎯 -What do they do best?

If you asked Emmy what he is best at he would tell you that's easy; its singing. Emmy has been obsessed with music from a young age but never properly nurtured to pursue that skill. However, he had grown into an angelic tenor nonetheless. And while often written off as 'stupid' or 'airheaded' because of his abysmal relationship with academia, Emmy has a staggeringly large catalogue of memorized lyrics, melodies, and harmonies. He can also harmonize with just about any tune he hears and is eager to start learning guitar.

Ask the right friends what he is best at, and they would mention his voice, yes, but they would also mention his sheer resolve and willingness to stand by his convictions, even in the most dire situations.

They'd also mention he's a hell of a driver, too.

🎹 - Do they have any hobbies?

Obviously, singing is a major part of Emmy's identity, so its no surprise that he is one to frequent open mics and karaoke bars. Not only does singing bring him joy, but he has an addictive personality and drowning in the attention he gets from being on stage is one of his favorite highs. He wishes one day to make a career out of his musical skill, but has no idea how to go about doing so. Doubly so now that he's stuck as an undead creature with a deadly allergy to sunlight.

In the same vein of his attention-seeking habits, Emmy loves to dance, both alone and with a partner. The bigger the audience, the better. He often tends to pair this with alcohol as a way of escapism and stress relief, and is a regular partyboy. He loves being the life of the party, despite the fact he himself is no longer alive.

A lesser-know hobby of Emmy's is his love of collecting plants and flowers of all kinds. But he does tend to gravitate towards plants native to the deserts of Arizona where he grew up. He has a healthy collection of potted plants that traveled with him in his car when he was alive, and he still adores them in unlife. Most are hardy succulents and an assortment of desert flowers, but he is always keen to grow red marigolds every summer, as they are his favorite flower. He even has a few paper red marigolds in a pot for the months where he cannot enjoy their blooms.

chase + sabrina (darkwater), since they're vampires and don't need to :3 also thadan (tes) for his short stint as a werewolf, since being a werewolf means u dont get the well rested buff from sleeping so i interpreted that as sleeping Doing Nothing For Him so he'd often go without. more time to write in his journal lol

4. which ocs sleep curled up vs. spread out vs. moves a lot during the night?

curled up: demi + lana (darkwater), edouart + lioren (tes) - p much all my werewolves lol

spread out: brandr (tes), velius (aermainh)

moves around: tun-tei (tes), aspen (darkwater), garrok (aermainh)

34. which ocs are clumsiest? which ocs are graceful?

aspen (darkwater) is pretty clumsy, and i think my most graceful character would be thadan (tes). i might be wrong tho i just dont rember sjdkghskdj im not rereading his journal its soo long and old

oh uh theyre all stupid... maybe sabrina (darkwater), bc tho she willingly associates w chase, she's under no illusions that he's a good person. unlike the warscos.

hello fellow vampire-oc-named-alex-haver! I love your alex, can I hear about your alex? whatever fun or not-so-fun facts you'd like to share :D

Hi Monday!

You can absolutely hear about my Alex, I will gladly ramble about them for almost certainly too long.

Alex Blackwood is more or less, the protagonist of Safe in the Dark, in so much as they were the original protagonist and are going to maintain that status despite the fact that there are now... five POV characters. They've come a hell of a long way since I first started writing them at the bright young age of 14, and are... somehow both more and less traumatized at the same time.

Quick little overview: mid twenties, asexual, agender, dark curly hair that is long not so much in an On Purpose Way but in an "I haven't had a haircut in Many Years" kind of way, one of the few characters whose eye color hasn't changed over the years--they're still a dark stormcloudy grey. Facial features tended to get described as birdlike when they were younger, sharp lines, prominent nose. Has a little mole on the right side of their neck and another one on the underside of their chin on that side.

Some Fun Facts:

Alex has no idea how cooking works, cannot produce more than a piece of butter toast reliably, will somehow burn things even if heat is not involved. (tbh probably a good thing they end up having to live on blood)

Has lost the majority of their southern accent as a result of being so much of the everywhere but it creeps back out the SECOND someone else near them has one. To such a strong degree that even people who know them well go ??????? what was that??????

They are indecisive to a fault, mainly because they are very afraid of making the wrong choice (whether this is the wrong choice for themself, or in relation to someone else, they spend a lot of time planning out the hypothetical consequences of things they will never actually do).

Is probably the most physically active member of the vamp!house by sheer virtue of needing the feeling of Body Moving to make their brain go quiet sometimes. Likes to run, loves sparring with Isaac and the chaos trio once that starts up. Likes the physical outlet to all the thoughts in their head.

Some Not Fun Facts:

Grew up in an extremely fundamentalist household.

Ran away at age 15 and never went back.

Suffers from sleep paralysis and really intense nightmares.

Has a lot of trouble staying present when something brings them into a memory. A smell, a sound, the look some someone's hair, they're prone to spiral into the things connected to it until their surroundings kind of, melt and they're just listening to the sound of something else, someone else, somewhen else. (oh hey the one part of my own trauma brain I gave them)

Witnessed the massacre of three dozen college students and to this day thinks it's their fault purely because their indecision meant they were still a half vampire when Eric came back, prompting him to try and force them to kill.

ANyways.

I love Alex so very very much.

They've been with me for... well over a decade now in some form or another which feels frankly ridiculous but it's so so amazing having gotten to evolve and learn more about them as time has gone by.
