Okay, I have a small challenge(?) for you, since you’re a Dani Pedrosa fan. I’ve watched a lot of interviews and press conferences with him, but since Dani is kind of shy and/or private, it’s hard to pinpoint certain personality traits, like I know him but not really.

So, could you describe Dani Pedrosa to me as the person he is? What traits and small things have you noticed about him? Both good or bad traits please!

Hi anon 👋👋👋 I'll do my best because I don't know him personally and I can only talk about what he has done or act in interviews.

Dani is indeed shy and private and that made him look bad towards media. Or at least it used to be a problem when he was young. I remember so media tittles and it just implied Dani was at war with all the journalist as he preferred to be elsewhere except there. I think he has said it in the past, but Dani would have loved to race when media and media training was not a thing because he hate it so much. It takes a while for him to warm up and talk, but a way to do it is start talking about bikes and then his on track and out of the track experiences will follow.

We all have seen Dani as someone serious, but apparently he is a prankster. No one was safe at Honda when he was Marc's teammate. And according to Marc, when they where at Japan... well havoc happen. Apparently once Dani ended up on someone else shoulders dancing and singing shitless (Valencia Pres conference 2018).

He seems to be a bit obsessive in the sense he needs to know everything surrounding the bike. There's no need for him to go to the factory, but he is there a lot, he talks with the riders and "coaches" them. And his job description doesn't include that. He is passionate. A lot, and that makes him a good pundit because he explains stuff in way that everyone can comprehend. Another pundit (a mechanic/technic) sad that it was probably because Dani had to ask himself all those questions and get the answer on his own. So basically Dani loves to learn. returning to the coaching, it's not just about KTM riders, or now that he is retired. Apparently in 2018, Maverick complained that the Yamaha was not working and Dani, who has never rider a Yamaha (or a non-Honda at that point) suggested some modifications to a rival. Apparently it was what he needed because Maverick went to win the next race.

He is not kind to himself. He heard his own stats and gets down because he is no a MotoGP World Championship. I think that Dani sees himself still as a kid fighting against his idols/top riders without realizing that he is now a legend and his the idol of other riders. (Marc and Álex M (especially Álex) are open about Dani being his idols. Also Ana has him as an idol!). Don't get me wrong, he is proud of what he has done and accomplished, but when you see his numbers compared to Vale, Marc, Jorge or Casey, he feels like he did nothing.

He never will see a bad thing about anyone. I'm serious even with all the Puig-Honda stuff that has gone on, Dani still talks about Puig and how he is the reason he is there. That without Puig he would had never done it-. The worst think I heard him said about Honda is 'a serious of bad decision made them be there'. And lets be a honest this is not a bad thing. He could drag them through the mud, but he is a gentlemen.

He is also a fighter, and not just on track. He has always had to fight with the bike and his body and also with Honda because he was not always listened.

And the worst thing, which also could be seen as good one, it's actually something he picked from Puig. Apparently people around Dani said that he would come to you, ask the questions and once he got the answer, h will leave. Some times even leave you with the words on the mouth. Apparently it's because they are hands on the job and are not in the mood to do small talk when it's not time for it. I think people mentioned it got better, but that definitely didn't help with his unapproachable aura he had back then.

He also seems to have a terrible memory when is not properly on track stuff or not something that blow out of proportion. Recently (December 2022) an interview wit Dani and Jorge (and other ex-riders) was realized and Jorge was the one who knew about all the intricacies and little details about them, while Dani was 'I don't remember you/me was there' which was funny because it's your husband enemies to lover friends slow burn.

saltburn and lo real maravilloso

bare with me.

lo real maravilloso, in its direct translation, means "the marvelous real." in english language, this is more commonly said as "magical reality." magical reality is (arguably) a genre of fiction.

lo real maravilloso is a genre which defies definition. it is the inexplicable, the absurd, the ironic, the whimsical, the manifestation of dream and abstraction. lo real maravilloso is also the mundane. if this is confusing, that's entirely understandable. let me quote alberto rios; "first things first. nothing so important and nothing at all unimportant." this is the essence of magical realism. the absurd and unbelievable in a constant dance with the mundane, creating nothing so important and nothing at all unimportant.

to quote un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes (a very old man with enormous wings) by gabriel garcía márquez, "his huge buzzard wings, dirty and half-plucked, were forever entangled in the mud. they looked at him so long and so closely that pelayo and elisenda very soon overcame their surprise and in the end found him familiar." in the story about un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes, the absurd and unbelievable (a winged man crashing to the earth) becomes the mundane (the winged man is flightless, and those that found him are quickly annoyed by his pathetic presence). a winged man becomes nothing so important, and the drag of every-day life is nothing at all unimportant.

now, saltburn. i'm fascinated by emerald fennell's choice of using the aristocratic english as her metaphor for the untouchable. in a lot of ways, i'm grateful this is what she chose. while the ultimate inspiration for saltburn was less the materialistic class commentary that it came to be, the aristocracy becomes so many things throughout the movie. what i wanted to talk about is how the aristocracy, the cattons, are lo real maravilloso. the essay i quoted before by alberto rios is spectacular, because it delves into not just the ironic nature of magical realism, but the rhetoric, as well; what it means to think we understand something, how language deludes us into believing we know something, how our own reality is mistaken for reality itself. saltburn and the cattons live in their own reality, which to the outsider, is absurdity. when watching the film, what we find ourselves thinking throughout it is essential to understanding the rhetoric of the movie.

when we see the grandeur and wealth and think how impractical, how unreal, how hilarious. the humor that saltburn taps into is near-identical to the core of magical realistic irony. "to use classical terminology, tone so often derives from the delivery of the narrative as litotes—understatement—in the middle of hyperbole-- overstatement. If it is not humor, then it comes off as flatness of treatment, non-reactivity, deadpan almost, which is the great comedian’s trick..." (rios). think back to the casualty of the cattons' absurdity. the sincerity in which elspeth delivers the most appalling, unreal anecdotes and additions. magical realism places culture, sincerity, normativity uncomfortably close to what we could hardly fathom. a winged man falling from the sky, kept in the chicken coup because it is quickly understood that he is hideous. finding your winged son dead in the middle of an elaborate maze, sprawled out beneath a minotaur statue, and the knowledge that lunch is about to begin.

the longer we experience the world emerald has created, the more we understand the reality in which the cattons live, the more we find it familiar. the absurdity is forgotten, until it's once again realized, until it's once again forgotten. this is the act of interacting realities; ours, and then another, and then back to ours. what's so fun about exploring wealth is this clashing of reality. believing that it's so absurd to be so rich, then succumbing to the normativity of richness, then once again finding yourself laughing at the idea of it. "what do you mean it's almost lunch? how could you say that? your son is dead. and beyond that, he's dead in the middle of a maze. he's dead in the middle of your estate maze, with your estate statues and your 179 bedrooms, one of them being the king's." and when lunch begins, we're dragged back into foreign reality. we feel the grief that pollutes the air, pulls at each of the cattons. we understand that our reality is not reality, nor is their reality. we're submerged in the tone of the film, the tone of the writing. a well-written character is a character who has their own reality; not that they're right or wrong, but that they are.

there is also the clashing of culture. the aristocracy is more familiar to the english. the emotional repression visualized throughout the movie is more familiar to the english. the culture of british boarding school is more familiar to the english. the longer we experience, the longer we stare at the unreasonable, the more familiar it becomes. our reality is not reality. we stand amidst billions of others, who have millions of preconceived notions, derived from millions of alternate cultures, experienced through thousands of languages, interacting with another billion people. what this all boils down to is how little we understand.

how does oliver interact with this foreign reality? how does farleigh? how are felix and venetia interacting with each other, as well as this life that so little experience? how do we understand it? how do we react to it? how do we react to the sex throughout the movie, which exist in its own absurdly real world? at what point in watching saltburn did you forget how stupid it was? at what point did you forget that having a maze in your backyard is ridiculous? having gargoyles? having footmen? having 200-person parties in your own house? at what point did you lose yourself in this foreign reality, and when did you remember that it's all ridiculous? have you remembered? have you realized that the sex was absurd? have you realized that felix catton is absurd? have you realized that oliver is blind to the absurdity as well? hm. hmmm.

AVEC PLAISIR alors les derniers livres que j'ai lus :

Tous les hommes sont des menteurs, d'Alberto Manguel. Un écrivain argentin est retrouvé mort à Madrid, tombé par la fenêtre, alors qu'il vient de publier une oeuvre magistrale. Un journaliste interroge les gens qui l'ont connu pour comprendre. Ca a l'air sombre dit comme ça, mais c'est assez drôle parce que le premier témoignage, c'est Alberto Manguel lui-même et le deuxième témoignage commence en gros par "Alberto Manguel est un connard", beaucoup de second degré, d'humour sur lui-même, sur la littérature. On se rend rapidement compte que chacun a une vision différente de ce qui s'est passé et que la vérité est multiple. Ca parle aussi de la dictature en Argentine, de la torture, de littérature évidemment, c'est assez facile à lire et j'avoue que je l'ai dévoré !

Les Détectives sauvages, de Roberto Bolaño. J'adooooore Bolaño, lisez La Littérature nazie en Amérique, lisez 2666, mais en vrai, je me demande si Les Détectives sauvages ne serait pas mon préféré de lui. On suit un jeune poète mexicain qui rejoint le mouvement du "réalisme viscéral", mouvement qu'il a cependant du mal à définir, et qui est inspiré par le vrai mouvement de l'infraréalisme. Au début, on suit ce poète, puis on s'intéresse à deux figures du réalisme viscéral, Arturo Belano (chilien, comme Bolaño, wink wink) et Ulises Lima dont on va découvrir la vie entre les années 70 et les années 90 par le biais de multiples témoignages de gens qui les ont connus - un peu comme Manguel. C'est à la fois très drôle, avec des littéraires qui se prennent pour des dieux vivants (et ayant fait un master de littérature, ça me parle) mais aussi très touchant, avec des vies brisées, des vies qui évoluent, le temps qui passe. Bolaño réussit à nous faire nous attacher à un personnage qu'on ne va connaître que pour quinze pages et ne plus jamais revoir du livre. C'est une accumulation d'histoires différentes qui forment un grand ensemble et c'est extraordinaire, sans doute dans mon top 10 de mes livres préférés. C'est un pavé par contre, 800/900 pages mais moi j'adore.

Cent ans de solitude, de Gabriel García Márquez (oui j'aime la littérature sud-américaine), un classique sur le coup mais que je n'avais jamais lu bizarrement. C'est l'histoire d'une famille dans un village de Colombie, sur plusieurs décennies et par ce biais, on raconte l'histoire de la Colombie, la modernité qui arrive petit à petit, la décadence : la famille et le village vont s'élever puis chuter, de la richesse à la destruction. Le bonus, c'est que c'est du réalisme magique, un mouvement littéraire qu'honnêtement je ne connais pas si bien que ça (j'adore Borges mais je ne suis pas certaine que ça en soit par exemple), qui mélange la réalité avec le merveilleux, où à la fois on a des problématiques ancrées dans le réel mais aussi des prophéties, des créatures étranges, des gens qui vivent beaucoup trop longtemps etc. C'est du conte de fée moderne, en tout cas je l'ai compris comme ça en lisant Cent ans de solitude, navrée si c'est un raccourci ! Et bref, c'est un livre assez difficile parfois, avec une narration qui revient en arrière, qui avance dans le temps, qui joue avec les chronologies, avec une multitude de personnages à retenir, mais c'est très plaisant de s'y perdre et c'est magnifiquement écrit donc, que dire de plus.

Le prochain sur ma liste, c'est Les Choses de Perec, mais je peux déjà vivement conseiller La Vie mode d'emploi du même auteur qui fait aussi partie de mes livres préférés, même si ça fait des siècles que je ne l'ai pas lu - j'en reparlerai quand je le relirai. C'est l'histoire d'un immeuble parisien et on raconte l'historique de chaque appartement, avec un fil rouge porté par le propriétaire de l'immeuble, c'est extraordinaire (j'aime les narrations multiples oups).

Literatura Contemporánea venezolana

Uno de los movimientos literarios más destacados es el realismo mágico, influenciado por Gabriel García Márquez y su obra "Cien años de soledad". Autores venezolanos como Arturo Uslar Pietri y Gabriel García Márquez mismo, quien vivió en Venezuela durante un tiempo, exploraron este estilo en sus obras.

En cuanto a los autores importantes, destacan Rómulo Gallegos, considerado uno de los padres de la literatura venezolana moderna, cuya novela "Doña Bárbara" es un clásico de la literatura latinoamericana. LINEA DEL TIEMPO

I was born in Tijuana and spent much of my boyhood in a neighborhood — “colonia,” in TJ-speak — called Independencia. There was an ersatz European-style castle at one end of our street, a tamed bear living at the bottom of the hill, a madman next door who regularly got drunk and shot his pistola at the moon, and a yard with bananas and a tall old pomegranate tree. Sounds tropical. Sounds like Gabriel García Márquez. Doesn’t sound on the surface like the deadly desert, like the frightening shadow land of crooked policías and narco hit men.

The borderlands are the most interesting book in the world, being rewritten every day. Currently, I can attest that much of that contested region, from coast to coast, is alive with tourists seeking good food and cheap medical care, a developing street scene of boutiques and gourmet eateries, baristas and art galleries, vivid music and literary movements, ballet companies and symphonic concerts and, in my hometown, the best street tacos on earth.

The Mexican cultural journalist Jaime Cháidez Bonilla recently wrote this on Twitter (I’ve translated from his Spanish): “I like it when evening falls over Tijuana, a poetic act. A city so defamed, a city so generous.” I dare say most people don’t think of any border city, on either side of the wall, as generous. I have been fortunate enough to write about Tijuana and the border for many years, and of course I have read a library’s worth of other authors wrestling with the region. My favorite border pop song is by Nortec Collective (more on them below), and it’s called “Tijuana Makes Me Happy.” Yeah — the border makes me happy. A tip: Expect the unexpected.

I need to pause here in recognition that immigration is the relentless theme of this area and this era. But I do not believe that immigration stories are a subset of the literature of the borderlands: Though there is some cross-pollination, I believe immigration literature is a genre of its own, deserving of its own spotlight. I do not include it here.

What books and authors should I take with me?

One grand feature of border culture is the lure of a bargain. For decades, the clarion call of cheap muffler (“mofle”) shops drew tourists south; now, it’s cheap dentures and Viagra. So let us offer a one-stop classic, the anthology “Puro Border: Dispatches, Snapshots and Graffiti From La Frontera.” Edited by Tijuana’s greatest literary son, Luis Humberto Crosthwaite, along with El Paso’s late, great Bobby Byrd and his son John William Byrd, this wild anthology covers the good, the bad and the ugly. Many of the greatest border thinkers and writers are contained within its covers: Charles Bowden, Leslie Marmon Silko, Sam Quinones, Juan Villoro and Doug Peacock (model for the infamous hero of Edward Abbey’s novel “The Monkey Wrench Gang”), among others. Funky, funny, literary, angry — it will show you things you may have wondered about and things you might not have imagined.

What writers or books will help me feel the spirit of this place?

Even if you do not read poetry, the borderlands require it. In a place both lush and austere, alien and homey, full of symphonies of languages and accents, smells and sounds, silence and raucous music, nothing can touch the experience of being there like poetry. It is not a coincidence that most of the writers on my list are also poets. They will transport you.

Ofelia Zepeda, a 1999 MacArthur fellow, is a Tohono O’odham poet of such elegant and exact rhetoric, such integrity of culture and vision, that you miss her quiet genius at your own risk. She gave the songs of the Tohono O’odham back to the land. Come to the chapels of her books “Ocean Power: Poems From the Desert” and “Where Clouds Are Formed.”

I highly recommend a book that gives me endless delight as a reader and endless inspiration as a writer: Harry Polkinhorn and Mark Weiss’s seminal anthology “Across the Line/Al Otro Lado.” It covers the broad and surprising corpus of Baja California’s poetry, from Indigenous chants to postmodern epics, and it includes works that reflect the flavored cross-genre/cross-cultural/cross-border adventures the writers foresee in the distance of this decade.

Arizona’s first poet laureate, Alberto Ríos, born in Nogales, Ariz., is a true writer of the borderlands. Though all of his poetry books are excellent, “A Small Story About the Sky” remains my favorite. However, of particular interest for this list is “Capirotada: A Nogales Memoir.”

No one is better positioned to affect this literature than Natalie Diaz, the director of the Center for Imagination in the Borderlands at Arizona State University. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry and a self-described “language activist,” Diaz is brilliant and powerful, and you need to read both “When My Brother Was an Aztec” and “Postcolonial Love Poem.”

Finally, the wizard, the curandero, the presidente: Juan Felipe Herrera. A former U.S. poet laureate and son of migrant farmworkers. My homeboy from Barrio Logan in San Diego. His selected poems in “Half of the World in Light” are a magical mystery tour, not only along the border but through the universe. Herrera is a kind of psychedelic drug and he will make you see visions. His voice is the distillation of all of our journeys.

What novels will transport me?

Borderlands authors are many. One of the best and most authentic is Denise Chávez. Her milieu is the often overlooked southern New Mexico and West Texas world of frontera families, and the tall tales that flourish there. She is the queen of the generation that surged in the 1980s and beyond — a strong feminist voice free of cant and bursting with delight. Her novel “Loving Pedro Infante” will begin your Chávez collection, and you won’t want to stop. Another groundbreaker is the poet and novelist Ana Castillo and her border classic “So Far From God.” Both of these writers tell the stories of women on the American side of the line in vivid color, in many tones and in both languages.

I also highly recommend anything by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. His “Aristotle and Dante” young adult novels are immensely popular, but I regard his poetry with helpless envy. Start with his story collection “Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club,” which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, and his poetry collection “Elegies in Blue.”

What audiobook would make for good company while I walk around?

The oldest, most venerable literary tradition along the borderline is oral. I didn’t start out reading books: I sat at the feet of old women telling ghost stories and fanciful family histories (and recounting dyspeptic gossip about other relatives). They were my first lit professors.

In my opinion, rather than audiobooks, you should listen to the music of the border, because it will be easier to absorb and you can dance to it. Every song is a novel or a book of poems, because the borderlands don’t talk: They sing. Music transcends and leaps over border walls like wild doves. Two of the best musical portraitists of this world are Lila Downs and Nortec Collective. Downs’s “The Border” is an elegant and lively album that paints indelible portraits with depth and wit. And her album “Shake Away” is a wild ride through the sounds and tales that we will never see on a tour bus or a beach holiday. (Suggested track: “Minimum Wage.”) For dance lovers and electronica fans, the Nortec Collective duo has created a hybrid of techno music that absorbs and transforms traditional instrumentation and themes into a rollicking dance music of joy and, yes, generosity. There are few bands that spawn a huge cultural and literary movement, but Nortec has opened gates for creativity in literature, theater, dance and visual art throughout the region and across the world that are constantly bearing fruit.

I must also recommend Los Lobos from Los Angeles, Calexico from Tucson, Ariz., and two wildly rollicking bands from Monterrey, Mexico: El Gran Silencio and Jumbo.

Anything I should add to my bookshelf?

For literate thrills and occasional chills, turn to Rubén Degollado (“The Family Izquierdo” and “Throw”). A splendid collection by Oscar Cásares, “Brownsville,” gives the inside scoop on a place in Texas that you may not think of without an author’s guidance. And Sergio Troncoso is such a beloved writer of the borderlands, there is a public library branch named for him in El Paso. His “A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son” is simply brilliant.
