- Come to think of it, you have four names. You were born as Cho Yeong, but you grew up as the assassin Naksu. Then you lived as Mu Deok, and now you are Jin Bu Yeon. [...] Which name shall I call you by? - The name that my parents gave me when I was born. I would like to be called Cho Yeong.

I really can't get over this quote here because it is probably true (at least in S1). Hear me out:
Uk loved Naksu to death, quite literally. The last thing he did after she stabbed him was to sink her sword deeper into his chest so he could embrace her and protect her from the other mages with his own body. Then reached for her hand in a secret "I love you" gesture because he couldn't even talk anymore.
Naksu was the first person who ever saw him for himself, and he would burn the world for her.
But for Naksu Uk was everything even if she never explicitly said it.
He was also the first and only person to see her for herself. He was her safe place in a world that hated, hunted and hurt her. She had to rely on herself ever since she was a kid, had to be strong, the strongest, since no weakness was allowed. She was isolated, living in the middle of nowhere in dire conditions.
And then Uk came along and offered her a house where people took care of her. HE took care of her, protected her, showed her she could rely on him. And all of a sudden she was no longer alone, she didn't have to fend for herself, she didn't have to be strong, she no longer was just an assassin. She was just her, someone worthy of love, someone who deserved to be taken care of, someone who could be weak.
He destroyed the walls she'd built and gave her a safe space where she could let go instead of living in survival mode.
He showered her with love when all she'd ever known was violence.
For most of her life, her sense of identity revolved around her power. She was the most powerful mage in all of Daeho. And he was the person she gave up all of that for. She gave up everything for him and she didn't care.
He was her haven in a world that killed her twice and then killed her a third time.

All the folks complaining that we didn’t get “badass Naksu” back really are showing that the only way they think a female character can be strong is if she kicks ass. Was Naksu awesome? Of course. But she was also the version of Cho Yeong that was abused, neglected, forced into becoming magically and physically powerful as a tool for Jin Mu. In the end, Cho Yeong made her own choice to reclaim her birth name, stick with the divine powers she received from Bu Yeon, and be happy and free alongside the person she loves. Also, would you want to go back to using the magic and the sword that you were forced to kill your lover with?! Yeong and Uk both spend the whole story chasing freedom, and they both got it in the end. They are both powerful, both free of others’ control, both happy with each other. I don’t see how that isn’t an ideal ending.

Uk and Naksu didn't recognize each other and yet they somehow got engaged a few days after their first meeting. Peak soulmates behaviour.

Crown Prince is a very grey, very interesting character but what he felt for MuDeok ain’t “love”. It was a weird combination of friendship + respect + possessiveness + competiton coz she is Uk’s woman + mild-attraction. He really wouldn’t have paid her much attention if she wasn’t with Uk.
To him it was more about “why do you love/choose/root for Uk so much?” than “why don’t you love/choose me?”.

- Why are you helping me? Why the change of heart? - Because we are guilty of the same crime. I am also guilty of existing when I should not.

jang uk x cho yeong has entirely rewritten the meaning of soulmates for me; in her helpless state she finds him, in his deepest sorrow he loves her, again and again, they are each other's light guiding one another from their own darkness, not even death could do them part, they are so loved by destiny and so loved by me

Why Jang Uk and Naksu are perfect for each other and how the love triangle with Seo Yul only reinforces that:
Let's start with a quick character analysis, shall we?
First we have Yul, the model student, the one who's memorized all the rules by heart and follows them to the letter.
While he was in love with Naksu (or rather, the memory of her) his first instinct when he met her again in S1 was to doubt and suspect her.
As you can see here (EP 12 S1) he, very subtly, tells Uk they should get rid of Naksu since she's now a soul shifter, and a dangerous one at that. She's the shadow assassin, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And let's be real, he never trusted her completely. Why would his first thought after she ran wild be "this could have been avoided if I'd reported her" otherwhise? He trusted Uk, but not Naksu.
This can be seen in the latest episode, EP 6. He may love her, but he still believes getting rid of her is better for everyone. Even though she herself doesn't know who she is. Even though she is harmless. His choice is still the same: to follow the rules, eliminate the thread, and maintain peace.
On the other hand we have Uk: the underdog. Underestimated, undermined and cast aside his whole life. He doesn't follow the rules, but rather his heart. How could he believe in a system that deemed him worthless? He doesn't owe anyone shit, because no one ever gave him a chance, none ever cared enough, until Naksu.
Tumblr media
This is Uk's answer to Yul's "Naksu is dangerous". He doesn't condemn her, doesn't judge her, doesn't let prejudice win over what he knows about her. Never has. Because he's been there. Because he's been called useless, a silly nobleman who wasted his time and others's, a man who would amount for nothing. Until Naksu gave him the chance no one ever gave him before.
Naksu stabbed Uk. She killed him. And yet the moment he woke up, he was sure none of that was her fault, that Jin Mu was the mastermind somehow. Hell, even when he was dying in her arms he reached for her and interlaced their fingers in an "I love you" gesture. He NEVER doubter her, even while she drove a sword through his heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
God, and look at this. He doesn’t give a damn about anything else, for him it’s all about her because she’s the one who gave him back the wings his father cut and his previous masters kept locked up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, something the king said on EP 4 is very telling.
Tumblr media
People love to talk about Naksu, love to gossip about her, but not a single one of them knows her. No one knows anything about her. Except Uk.
Uk, who looked beyond the assassin's facade and saw the affection-starved girl. The girl who often bought honey biscuits for him, the girl who made a certain type of noodles because she knew he liked them.
He saw the girl who was worth protecting, even dying for, while everyone else saw the girl that must be killed, the threat.
