I remember when I was reading DOTC when I was around 10, and ever since Misty died I had been waiting for the moment where Birch and Alder learned about her murder, how everyone in their lives has kept it a secret. And then it just didn't happen.
I also remember obsessively re-reading the part where Quiet Rain blows up at Clear Sky.
Birch and Alder are two characters that are just so...
I WANT to say they were forgotten about, but that word doesn't feel right for how they're constantly showing up on the screen. Clear Sky occasionally feels guilty about how he murdered their mother, but for the vast majority of the time, that's described in passive voice. So you're not reminded of just HOW cruel he was, and still very much is.
It's like they're not allowed to be characters.
Like, how does Alder feel about Clear Sky, who seemed to be acting as an adoptive father until he beat her as a child? How did Birch respond later, when Clear Sky was so busy thrashing his sister that he was threatened by a dog? How do they feel about the man who took their mother away from them?
They keep getting cited as "Good Examples Of Non-Campborn Cats," dodging around the fact they were stolen and raised by Petal. Like a lot of the other "adoptions" in the series, she quietly stops mattering to them. But even this fact... like, they're being OTHERED when they were functionally raised SkyClan.
How do they feel about THAT? That their earliest memory is SkyClan, and yet, they'll never be considered truly, fully "clanborn."
Their whole life taken from them, by Clear Sky's cruelty, their formative years spent in his violent shadow, and the narrative is just not interested in that.

“Why can’t all the cats just be friends? Just because we live in different places doesn’t mean we have to fight.”
Alder is a splotchy gray, brown, and white she-cat.
Notes:
- Daughter of Misty, adopted daughter of Petal, sister of Birch

I have a completely random theory that Birch and Alder from DoTC where meant to have swapped descriptions.
Alder looks like this
And Birch looks like this:
But birch trees are famous for having white bark with darker spots and speckles, while alder trees can be used to produce a dark ginger or auburn dye
So my theory is that Birch was supposed to be white with darker spots and Alder was supposed to be ginger but they where erroneously described as the opposite and it just ended up sticking

Just a big heap of cats. Birch and his sister Alder, and their mother Misty. Misty died, so their adopted mother is Petal, and she's with her brother Fox. Pink Eyes and Blossom are from Thunderclan, Frost is Shadowclan, Spotted Fur, Owl Song, Reed Tail, and Swift Minnow are Windclan. Fircone and Nettle are Skyclan, Rainswept Flower, Mud Paws, and Mouse Ear are also Shadowclan. Shaded Moss didn't get to join a group, he's also Rainswept Flower's father. Swift and Branch are loners.

Thinking about SquirrelJessy from this ask and @featherfrond asking me to draw Jessy
So at the end of BS Bramble realizes he can’t leave his wife that he hates and they have children together so Jessy leaves. But what if he never did?
They’re broken up at that point, Bramblestar is off playing with Jessy the super smart beautiful kittypet wanting to join the clans, and Squirrelflight is the only cat actually running Thunderclan making her super stressed bc she has no help. She’s pretty much acting as both leader and deputy on everything without the honor being leader would give her.
Jessy decides she does really like clan life and becomes a warrior (I like to think she’d keep her name but I could also see her wanting to really take up the warrior mantle so maybe she’d get a proper name? Or something like Jessystep? Idk yet). While she and Bramble aren’t official they are pretty much mates, dating more so then married. That’s when she starts seeing more of who Squirrelflight is instead of what Bramble told her.
The cute little red kitty isn’t naive at all, she’s not overly emotional, headstrong, or needlessly defiant. Jessy sees the deputy is actually really smart, she knows what’s right and acts strongly based on her morals. She has strong emotions on issues that matter but knows how to hold herself back. What most catches Jessy’s eye is how she acts around Bramblestar. Her bright fiery nature dims down to barley a ember. She sees just how careful the molly is, how often she shields herself when he’s around as if she’s always afraid he’ll claw her pelt off.
Maybe there’s something more that Bramble never told her. Maybe Squirrelflight isn’t the lying mate that undermined him all the time, constantly yells, and made all their fake kids hate him (this is how he views both her and the three after the secret was revealed)
Overtime Squirrelflight and Jessy grow closer, friends and finding they actually work really good together. From learning from Squilf Jessy realizes she was never the abusive party in their relationship. Anger boils in her belly. She finally gets Squilf to call Bramble out who immediately lashes back at her and calls Jessy to his side as a show he doesn’t need his old mate. Except Jessy steps to Squirrelflights side and barks back, ripping Bramble apart. He’s shocked and blames it all one Squilf like he’s always done. He yells about how she took his mate and made her hate him just like she made their fake kits hate him. While not many cats come forward and defend but a clear divide is forming.
Jessy and Bramble officially break up but he keeps his place as leader. Connecting together Jessy and Squirrelflight become mates and they raise Alderkit and Sparkit as theirs instead of Bramble’s kits. Spark grows to be confident similar to her mother and Alder is sweet and caring like his momma.
A little after TBC Bramblestar is taken out of power at last and becomes a elder, finally learning he’s not as good as he always thought he was and learning to heal. While he does apologize and his mates accept that they stay away from each other. He doesn’t dare get close to any of his kits from how much he screwed up.
Squirrelflight becoems Squirrelstar, I don’t think Jessy would want to be deputy but helps her mate often. I like Spark becoming leader but it’s a little odd with how much the Fire fam has controlled TC so maybe Twigbranch or a background cat could becomes deputy. Personally enjoy Spotfur, Sorrelstripe, or Plumstone getting into power.
TLDR: Jessy helps Squilf get free of Bramblestar, he finally realizes the harm he’s done and backs down to be a elder making Squirrelstar leader, Spark and Alder would be raised by Jessy and Squilf, some cat would be deputy after. Just a story about overcoming abusers and finding power for themselves. I like to a lot JessySquirrel may be my new favorite Squilf ship so far
Someone ask me to draw Squilf so I can make hypokits of them I love them both so much. Also with this I think Squilf would be pan and Jessie is a bi trans molly. I love them <3333
