rather than who you would like to see on the next taskmaster series, who do you think will be on it? like just your predictions or any inklings you may have!

anon if you're still around then you'll know i really took my time with this hahaha so sorry! i hope anyone reading this takes it as just a bit of fun and nbd, who knows who we'll get or who alex & the network have in mind! i'm answering thoughtfully (bc i always feel guilty not to 😩 so sorry this is long lol) but it's really just fun!!

i will say, of the more recent-ish series, i did get a few right!!! krishnan guru-murthy, nicola coughlan, alan davies, judi love, sue perkins, john robins, and joanne mcnally were people i just knew would eventually be on if the show could get their schedules right, and i was also certain sarah millican and dara ó briain would be asked — though not necessarily that they'd actually agree. when you have a level of seniority and esteem, the "it's such a great opportunity" aspect of the show isn't such a draw 😅 for some reason i feel SO PROUD about guessing nicola! i was just WAITING and wish sooooo much she had done a full series 😭😭😭 (how fun would saoirse-monica jackson be too!)

anyways, as for people who haven't been on yet — and this isn't to say i want them all to be, just that i think it's likeliest they have been asked or will be asked; i talked about who i want to see a little while ago here — it's important to consider the casting 'roles' the network has in mind when working with the producers to form a series, so i will keep that in mind too!

established comedian, typically a straight white man over 40: bill bailey, vic reeves, harry hill, geoff norcott, kevin bridges, adam buxton, ade edmondson (tommy tiernan? god i feel bad for not saying ed byrne but why do i feel like he's not gonna make it in the next few series? i'm on the fence with nick helm — unless he's friends with alex, then his chances go up significantly imo — and tom allen for some reason, and i feel like john bishop is almost too much of an ask?)

fresh talent comedian, typically a man under 40: rhys james, huge davies, ahir shah, darren harriott would be my top guesses but tbh any of the semi-recent edinburgh comedy award finalists are good bets as a majority of the winners from the last ~10 years have been on the series + throwing out tom rosenthal (i know he's not fresh fresh and also mostly an actor)...and, like, jazz emu?...just because if taskmaster know how much its audience adores weird little white twinks then they'll cast them

female or non-binary comedian: 100% sarah keyworth + harriet kemsley, maisie adam, jess fostekew, suzi ruffell. i've shifted away from betting on cariad lloyd and catherine bohart for some reason... (joanne was my no.1 lady bet for the last like 4 series hahaha)

non-comedian: this is very, very hard to predict because between comedy actors, non-comedy actors, tv presenters, news people, reality & social media stars... the potential predictions are just so endless! logically, the most likely is an established actor with a lot of comedy connections (think sally phillips, lolly adefope, liza tarbuck, sian gibson, daisy may cooper, susan wokoma; this category is where tm gets quite a few of its female contestants): matt holness, kevin eldon, amanda abbington, tom davis, sharon horgan, kathy burke, georgia tennant (also friends w alex?), su pollard, tom basden, apparently anyone from the cast of ghosts, and so on and so on and so on... + i'll also throw out maggie aderin-pocock as a serious contender + i really feel like one of the spice girls will be on new years treat

friend of alex: john robins was the prediction for the past few series, so just worth keeping in mind other people in this circle include elis james, matthew crosby, tom neenan, and so on

freebie answers because alex/greg have mentioned them before: jack dee, lorraine kelly, joanna lumley (i want jennifer saunders SO BAD give us an epic series w both ade and jen pleaseeee tm gods!!!!)

complete wild card bets that are either my instincts kicking in or my bias taking over: limmy, adam buxton, paddy mcguinness, diane morgan, daniel sloss, joel dommett, jess hynes, spencer jones??, alasdair beckett-king or josh pugh + if suzy izzard wasn't doing a big nyc show i'd say that's a good guess if only bc you know greg & alex grew up big fans

these are almost all of my fr big heavy hitters when it comes to placing bets! but there are of course so many people i didn't name who i could totally see on either a main series or the ny treat — so many people just make sense and that's the beauty of taskmaster!!

January Reading Log 2023

thoughts: i think this is my mystery/thriller/weird girl lit era.

Finished

- A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson: i was gripped by the mystery plot. i think i read it in like two days. i also really loved the way the project stuff was formatted and i think it made it even more fun to read.

my least favorite thing was the romance because the mc is like 17 and her li is 20. it was weird and i didn't like it.

(unfortunately, i bought the sequels before i read the first book bc they were on sale. so i feel compelled to read them to get my money's worth. which means if you're reading these, you'll probably hear about the sequels as well.)

anyway, it's about a girl who's using her senior class project to try to prove her friend's brother is innocent of murder. like ten years before a girl went missing and they suspected her boyfriend of murder. but he dies mysteriously of a supposed suicide, so the town pins it on him because he can't defend himself. and his family is ostracized by the town. so the mc sets out to find the real killer and finds herself in a tangled web of lies and deceit.

- The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides: i loved this book. it was a little slow at first, but once it gets going so many things happen. the plot twist hit me like a slap to the face. i was like 😯😀. if you like books about fucked up men and fucked up women, you're probably gonna like this book.

it's about a therapist who is obsessed with this woman who killed her husband like five years before, and she's went completely silent ever since. so he wants to try to get her to talk. but not everything is as it seems.

- Black Widow (2016) The Complete Collection: i read this years ago, and i forgot what happened in it. but the art work was really pretty and i love natasha, so i figured i would give it another go. and i have to say i found the storyline kind of underwhelming.

it's one of those natasha stories where she's very serious and all business and there's someone from her past trying to take her down. it's sort of like the edmondson/noto run, but not as good lol.

the story follows natasha as she's pursued by this guy called the weeping lion, who has information he's using to blackmail natasha to do his bidding. then a bunch of other stuff happens where it's revealed someone has recreated the red room and is still creating black widows. and natasha has to save the kids.

- Sleep by C.L. Taylor: this was a fun book. i think i got it on sale for like $3. it's about this woman who gets in a car accident with her coworkers where she and only one other person survive. she then goes to work at an inn on an island, and ends up being stranded with 6 other people, one of them a murderer who is trying to kill them.

Hi! With the Black Widow movie coming out, I just re-watched some old MUC movies and remembered how much I love Natasha. What are the main, must-read, Natasha-centric comics that you would recommend to a comics newbie? (You once made a similar post for Loki comics that I used and found extremely helpful.) Thanks for everything you share! I've found a lot of content that I enjoy through your blog!

I was sure I'd made a Natasha reading list a while back but apparently not?? what the fuck self. (well, other than my overall MCU starter kit recs post from forever ago that was for all of the O6 and is also very old.)

okay well then I guess it's time to do that now, no time like the present! going to link to trades where they exist but I'll include issue numbers as well

heads up: you probably will run into references you don't understand in some of these. that's comics for you. my advice: either let those things float by you, or just Google them - you can enjoy comics without knowing/having read all the lore!

anyway, the recs.

the easiest suggestion I have right off the bat though is the Black Widow Epic Collection editions that have been published recently (Black Widow: Beware the Black Widow, and Black Widow: The Coldest War) which include some of her major appearances, including in a bunch of old single issues that would otherwise be hard to find. HOWEVER, those won't take you up into her more contemporary appearances (the latest publish date in there is 1996).

THE TOP OF THE LINE

The Marjorie Liu run collected as Black Widow: The Name of the Rose (Black Widow vol. 4 #1-5). If you read no other Black Widow comics, read this one. It's so good, easily one of my top five comics runs of all time. Cannot recommend it enough.

Black Widow: The Itsy Bitsy Spider which includes two different short runs (Black Widow vol. 1, #1-3 & Black Widow vol. 2, #1-3). This is probably my other favorite Black Widow collection of issues (and they very much lead into each other); here's where Yelena gets introduced and also where you can find some very gay panels. If you can't find this one, you can find the same issues republished with the added Pale Little Spider miniseries in a trade called Marvel Knights Black Widow by Grayson and Rucka: The Complete Collection.

The Nathan Edmondson/Phil Noto run collected in three trades The Finely Woven Thread, The Tightly Tangled Web, and Last Days (Black Widow vol. 5, #1-20). This one follows on thematically in some ways from the Marjorie Liu run but primarily the appeal here, in my opinion, is Phil Noto's art, which is gorgeous.

The Mark Waid/Chris Samnee run collected as Black Widow: SHIELD's Most Wanted and Black Widow: No More Secrets (as well as in a Complete Collection edition) (Black Widow vol. 6, #1-12). This was a series not long enough for this world but a delight while it lasted - again, particularly the art, but Waid and Samnee also just work together very, very well.

Black Widow: Web of Intrigue which includes Marvel Fanfare #10-13, Bizarre Adventures #25, and Black Widow: The Coldest War, some older stories featuring Natasha.

THE DEEPER CUTS

I'd put down first Hawkeye & Mockingbird / Black Widow: Widowmaker as a recent series worth reading; the trade also collects Solo Avengers #16-18 in addition to Widowmaker #1-4. I don't think it really gets referenced in other places, but it's a fun collection of issues and I love the dynamic of these three together.

If you want to dig into the background of the character and her true comics origins, check out the old comics collected in Black Widow: The Sting of the Widow which include her first appearances, the introduction of her iconic costume (in Spider-man, actually), and her short run in Amazing Adventures (Tales of Suspense #52, Amazing Spider-Man #86, Amazing Adventures vol. 2 #1-8, Daredevil #81).

This is...kind of a weird one and also a mixed recommendation, but I will throw out there the semi-extracanonical Black Widow: Homecoming (Black Widow vol. 3, #1-6) and Black Widow: The Things They Say About Her (Black Widow 2 vol. 3, #1-6), apparently also now collected as Black Widow: Welcome to the Game, written by Richard K. Morgan (yes, the author of the book that inspired the Netflix show Altered Carbon) because while they are...not good in all ways they do hit some very specific notes for me in places.

Captain America & Black Widow is a short team-up run with Steve and Natasha that's enjoyable if a bit wacky (Captain America & Black Widow #636-640) from a period of time where there was just a series of Captain America team-ups as part of the Captain America run.

This is going to be a hard one because it's not collected anywhere as far as I can tell, but Marvel Knights #1-15 which was published in 2000-2001 as part of Marvel's street level gritty initiative thing (that actually produced some quite good comics). I tracked it down in single issues back in college and actually really loved it. Team book but Natasha is prominent.

If you can find Black Widow & the Marvel Girls (Black Widow & the Marvel Girls #1-4) it is a treasure of a miniseries but unfortunately very difficult, in my experience, to track down.

The Black Widow: Widowmaker collection pulls together an assortment of sort of random oneshots/short runs with some good stuff in there (mostly the thing that I like that is in this one and not in other collections on this list are Fear Itself: Black Widow #1, but it does also include with other material some of the other runs on this list - Black Widow vol. 4 #1-8, Black Widow: Deadly Origin #1-4, and Widowmaker #1-4).

Finally: there's The Champions, the short-lived team Natasha actually led back in the day which is pretty Silver Age but sometimes in an endearing way, and the arc collected in Daredevil: The Widow which is Natasha-centric (Daredevil #61-66) and good enough that I bought it even though I'm not a particular fan of Daredevil. But that might partly be because I really like Alex Maleev's art.

People recommend Black Widow: Deadly Origin but I am not personally a big fan. I'm putting it on here mostly so you have it and also so other people know I'm aware of it.

I'm not yet caught up on the most recent currently running series so I can't speak to recommending it or not.

if you really, really want more deep cuts, anon, I have some, uh, team runs and single issue appearances I'm very fond of personally, but that starts going way down the rabbit hole in a way that perhaps you do not want to.

Well Phil Noto is adored in my little corner of the internet, I absolutely loved the series he worked on and he is by far my favourite artist from the ones who've worked on Black Widow.

I can't really recommend a book. The one I've read, Black Widow Forever Red, wasn't one I particularly enjoyed. Too many original characters, too little Natasha.

If you're starting out though, some of the bigger titles that are also some of my favourite stories with Natasha are:

BONNIE AND CLYDE ('67), BADLANDS ('73) and NATURAL BORN KILLERS ('94) by Pablo Kjolseth

Guns. The U.S.A. owns almost half the guns in the world and we also lead in the manufacture and export of guns, making it no surprise that they're always in the news alongside all too familiar and tragic headlines. On the domestic end, it's usually a story about men and the relationships they cultivate with their guns. But it's not always that way. Sometimes a woman also gets involved, and it turns into a threesome of sorts. Such was the case when Charles Raymond Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate went on a murder spree in 1958 that killed 11 people. It was an event that was tackled in Terrence Malick's BADLANDS ('73) and then more loosely in Oliver Stone's NATURAL BORN KILLERS ('94). Before that, Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow were two infamous lovers to make waves as robbers during the Great Depression. They killed at least nine police officers along with several civilians. Their story would be mythologized and transmuted into cinema by Arthur Penn's BONNIE AND CLYDE ('67).

Let's put these three movies up against the wall for a quick police lineup. Who was behind the camera? What made them stand out? How were they shot? First up:

BONNIE AND CLYDE

1) Arthur Penn directed. He followed BONNIE AND CLYDE with ALICE'S RESTAURANT ('69) and LITTLE BIG MAN ('70). BONNIE AND CLYDE was nominated for a slew of Oscars, including Best Director for Penn and winning two for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Cinematography. The man behind the camera snagging that last award was Burnett Guffey, a seasoned veteran who got his start in 1923 and who also worked on FROM HERE TO ETERNITY ('53) and BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ ('62).

2) Before BONNIE AND CLYDE Arthur Penn had a flop with MICKEY ONE ('65), but that film starred Warren Beatty and Beatty liked Penn. Beatty was instrumental in hiring Penn and Robert Towne for the script. To quote from Alex Cox's book Introduction to Film: A Director's Perspective, there was something else: "As a producer and as an actor, Beatty's work in this instance was quite brilliant: in particular, his ability to surrender focus to his co-star, Fay Dunaway, whose performance dominates the film. Who was the auteur of Bonnie's tale - Arthur Penn, or Warren Beatty?"

3) As to how it was shot, what really set BONNIE AND CLYDE apart from the competition was the slow-motion carnage at the end. This connected with a wide audience for many reasons, including that the film emphasized the protagonists as individuals fighting authority and banks. At the time of the movie's release, the carnage in Vietnam served as a backdrop that further undermine the powers that be. As to influence, it's hard to imagine the slow-motion bullet ballad of Sam Peckinpah's THE WILD BUNCH ('69), which came out two years later, without BONNIE AND CLYDE.

BADLANDS

1) Terrence Malick's directorial debut was a doozy. It was not the first film to be based on Starkweather and Fugate, for that we could look to James Landis' THE SADIST ('63). It was, however, the first film to be distributed by a mainstream studio to do so and was followed by several others. BADLANDS was picked up by Warner Bros. after it screened at the New York Film Festival, alongside Martin Scorsese's MEAN STREETS ('73).

2) Some of the things that make BADLANDS stand out are his iconic use of American landscapes, the use of Sissy Spacek's voice to provide narration, and (like BONNIE AND CLYDE) the male substitution of violence for sex.

3) In his article on TCM, Jeff Stafford had this to say about how BADLANDS: "Although he had previously worked as a screenwriter (POCKET MONEY), he decided to direct his own scripts after Paramount made a complete mess of his DEADHEAD MILES screenplay, transforming it into a film so bad it couldn't even be released. With his brother Chris, Malick managed to raise $300,000 for BADLANDS's pre-production costs. The additional money was raised by independent producer Edward R. Pressman from personal friends like former Xerox chief Max Palevsky".

NATURAL BORN KILLERS

1) In what would be another Warner Bros. property, director Oliver Stone would take a story by Quentin Tarantino that he then took over to co-write (alongside David Veloz and Richard Rutowski) into a nightmarish vision of mass murder flying in tandem with mass media.

2) NATURAL BORN KILLERS would employ 18 different film formats. Whereas BONNIE AND CLYDE was shot in a slightly traditional way until an untraditional end, and BADLANDS was shot lyrically, with N.B.K. we have a Cuisinart-style mode that batters viewers with a frenzy of hyper-stimulation the likes of which might induce seizures in those with weaker immune systems.

3) NATURAL BORN KILLERS was shot in 56 days. Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor produced the soundtrack. Like Kubrick's A CLOCKWORK ORANGE ('71), it's a film so agitated and manic that some have accused it of playing a pivotal role in pushing impressionable people into committing acts of violence themselves, as happened when 18-year-olds Sarah Edmondson and Benjamin Darras dropped acid, watched N.B.K. and later that night shot two people (one fatally, one left paralyzed).

There are many debates over what begets violence. The three pictures mentioned above all touch, in different ways, on our country’s obsession with guns and violence but when the camera is shooting a story, even when it’s based on a true story, it’s turning things around. It’s turning that story into a conversation among the viewers. It’s a dialogue. This is a conversation we own. We are both the owners and participants in this hall of mirrors. A hall of mirrors that too often comes crashing down in gunfire.

If I can add but one thought to this conversation let it be this: if you feel compelled to drop acid and watch a movie, please consider Disney's FANTASIA ('40). That’s what I did as a teenager. It still turned into a bad trip but – other than an unknown amount of lost brain cells for the user in question – nothing was harmed.

‘Cults & Extreme Belief’: A&E Investigates Sanctuary Church

A&E Investigates will look at the so-called self help group NXIVM in the series premiere of Cults and Extreme Belief, hosted by Elizabeth Vargas. The organization has been making headlines in recent weeks with the arrest of its leader Keith Raniere and one of his top lieutenants, Smallville actress Allison Mack, on charges of sex trafficking and other crimes. The group has been called by prosecutors a sex cult that has been keeping women as “slaves,” and branding them with Raniere’s initials.

In the premiere, former members share their experiences of manipulation and sexual violation, including Canadian actress Sarah Edmondson (Psych, Edgemont) who sits down with Vargas to share new details of her ordeal inside the organization.

Additional organizations that will be explored in season 1 include Twelve Tribes, Sanctuary Church, United Nation of Islam, Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Jehovah’s Witnesses and The Family [probably The Children of God]. Cults and Extreme Belief is produced for A&E Network by The Intellectual Property Corporation. Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman executive produce for IPC along with executive producer/showrunner Alex Weresow and executive producer Rachelle Mendez. The series kicks off with a two-night premiere on Monday, May 28 and Tuesday May 29 at 10 PM on A&E.
