culture tips for writing asian settings: tea varieTEAs
atla's got major Tea Guy representation in iroh but let's be real, even non-tea guys are going to be drinking tea in an asian-inspired setting—you'd be served it instead of water most places. so, what kind of tea are you picking for them?
Tumblr media
as an east asian reader, it can take me out of the setting to see the characters drink something like chamomile (from europe/west asia) or... most herbal teas, to be honest. ngl it was weird to see iroh in the show, characterised as a huuuuuuge tea snob, drink stuff like jasmine (it's fine it's just basic, is all! imo!) or like.... a random flower he encounters in the wild.
when we're talking tea, real asian tea, we're talking about the leaf of the camellia sinensis plant. the huge variety we have of tea is actually from the different ways of processing that exact same leaf. popular varieties include:
green: the leaf goes through minimal processing, can have a bright and even leafy/grassy flavour (examples: gunpowder, longjing aka dragon well, matcha, genmaicha)
white: also undergoes minimal processing, with a lighter flavour than even green (examples: silver needle, shou mei)
oolong: the leaf is semi-oxidised, curled, and twisted—can be characterised by a tanniny flavour with a bright aftertaste. my personal favourite! (examples: da hong pao, tieguanyin, dong ding, alishan)
dark (black): note this isn't the same as black tea as we think of it in english. the leaf is fermented to produce an earthy tea with a flavour like petrichor (examples: pu'er)
all the teas listed in the "examples" are fairly credible teas that i think a real tea snob like iroh would drink.
Tumblr media
ok, but what about...
"black tea" as we know it in the west—assam and ceylon etc? this variety is actually called "red tea" in chinese. we don't drink it with milk but to be honest, i've just... never really heard of anyone drinking chinese red tea? which is why i've kept it off the list. (there's lapsang souchong, but i associate that with bri'ish people...) anyone who does drink it, let me know! on the other hand something like assam/ceylon, while extremely delicious and also asian, is a product of british colonialism and is consumed with milk. i think if you wanted to massage some of the traditions & have chai-drinking indian-influenced characters, though, that's cool!
do you actually not drink herbal tea? we do... but a lot of it is considered medicinal. we've got stuff like herbal "cooling tea" with ingredients like sour plum, mesona, or crysanthemum; tea that warms you up like ginseng or ginger. the whole concept of hot/cold in chinese medicine though... that deserves another culture post
camellia leaf murdered my family & i have a grudge against it; what else can my blorbos drink? there'a some good, tasty stuff made of wheat, barley, buckwheat, even soybean. wouldn't be egregious for the characters to drink that!
is milk sacriligeous? a real tea snob would think so, but a lot of asians nowadays are chill about milk in tea—usually in western-influenced red tea. hong kong, thailand, india, taiwan, and malaysia (among others) have their own cultures of milk tea, which has even become a democratic rallying point.
what do you think of iroh inventing bubble tea? my main issue with it is it's anachronistic! it was invented in taiwan in the late 20th century, but atla's set in the equivalent of the mid-19th century... you could also make arguments about whether iroh's too snobby about tea to invent it LOL
there's soooo much more i can say about all this so: keep your eyes peeled! i'll talk about medicine & tea ceremony in the near future <3

Planted flowers with my mom, then we sat outside and enjoyed a cup of Alishan Black. She likes this tea a lot for it's grapefruit flavor.

Tea export earnings help to finance food import bills, supporting the economies of major tea-producing countries.
Tumblr media
The global tea production amounts annually to over USD 17 billion, while world tea trade is valued at about USD 9.5 billion, While little is known about the exact origin of tea, for centuries China was the only tea exporting country in the world until it faced stiff competition from India in the early 19th century. Today tea is grown in over forty countries, but the greatest teas of the world are still grown and skillfully produced by just five traditional tea growing countries, China, India, Japan, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.
China
China along with India is one of the two largest producers of tea in the world. It produces greatest variety of teas including green, black, white, yellow, oolong and pu-erh. China produces large amount of green tea, but exports only around 20-25% as the rest of it is consumed domestically. Majority of Chinese tea export include black tea. In China tea is produced over a large part of the country from Hainan Island down in the extreme south to Shandong Province in the north and from Tibet in the southwest to Taiwan across the Straits. The tea growing areas in China can be divided into four main regions- Jiangbei, Jiangnan, Linglan and the Southwest.
India
India is one of the leading tea producers and is known for some of the best tea in the world. Over 70% of the tea produced in India is consumed within the country itself while the rest is exported. Majority of the tea produced in India is black, although there is an increasing quantity of green, white and oolong coming from the Indian tea estates now. There are three main tea growing regions in India – Darjeeling, Assam and the Nilgiris. Since there is a wide variation in their location, elevation, climatic conditions and even the tea plant used in each of these regions varying from original Chinese stock to indigenous and hybrid tea plants, it is important to know the origin of Indian teas.
Sri Lanka (Ceylon)
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon is one of the largest exporters of high quality black tea into the world tea market. Tea grown in Sri Lanka is classified into three main varieties depending on the altitude in which the plant grows. The low-grown varieties are cultivated up to 600 meters and yield a strong, dark infusion used mostly in blends; the mid-grown from 600 to 1200 meters and the high-grown, between 1200 to 2300 meters, give the best quality.
Japan
Japan is the only major tea producing country in the world to almost exclusively process only green tea, around 97% of which is consumed internally. Its three major tea-growing regions are Shizuoka, Kagoshima, and Uji. Japanese teas are prepared in three styles – pan-fired, basket-fired and natural leaf. Within these styles there are several quality levels: Bancha, Sencha and Gyokuro. The vast majority of production is the middle quality grade Sencha. In addition, there are other teas like the Matcha which is a powdered green tea used in the Japanese tea ceremonies.
Taiwan (Formosa)
Taiwan was formerly known as Formosa and so Taiwanese tea is still referred to as Formosa tea. Taiwan is famous for its Oolong although it produces green and black teas too. Tea is grown in many areas in Taiwan but the best variety comes from the higher altitudes. Some of the better known Oolongs include Dongding Oolong, Alishan Oolong, Pouchong, Shanlinxi Oolong, Jade Mountain Oolong, Dong Fang Mei Ren, Da Yu Ling Oolong, Li Shan Oolong, etc.

QZGS|The King’s Avatar Fic: In which something nice happens to our birthday boy.
Title: Ágúst Fandom: The King’s Avatar / Quan Zhi Gao Shou Character(s)/Pairing(s): YuHuang Summary: Since his birthday happens during the summer break, Huang Shaotian is used to spending this day by himself, receiving messages and mailed gifts from his teammates and other pro-player friends in the Alliance. And without fail, his captain will always be the first to wish him a happy birthday, but this year seems a little different. [Takes place during the summer between S9 and S10] Part: 1/1 Rating: PG-13 A/N: Gasp. Me, writing something in canon-verse? Amazing. Literally just… mindless, cheesy fluff. Happy birthday to our beloved chatty Sword Saint! And happy birthday to @andthenabanana~
Writing Commission | Editing & Translation Services
---
[Flowing Cloud]: Happy birthday, Huang Shao! Did you receive the package I sent you???
[Troubling Rain]: Thx, Xiao Lu! And yeah i did… Speaking of which, how do u figure im gonna finish all those snacks by myself, kid?!
A few days ago, the famed Sword Saint of Team Blue Rain had received an express delivery parcel from an unknown address in Taiwan: a giant box of local snack varieties from the team’s young swordsman. Placed atop of the rainbow packages of Kaui Che pork and beef jerky, fruit jellies, honey layer cakes, sugar and spice nougats, pineapple cakes, and for some strange reason, Alishan tea leaves, was a birthday card — and not just any plain, ol’ greeting card either. The brat had chosen the kind that played obnoxiously loud tinkling rendition of “Happy Birthday to You” when the receiver flipped open the card.
Huang Shaotian quickly snapped the card shut and winced at the horrid echo of the melody that had sounded especially strident in his quiet apartment, and one corner of his lips couldn’t help but lift upward into a heartfelt smile.
[Troubling Rain]: i cant stop eating those pineapple cakes and this is all ur fault, so u better buy more and bring them to the dorm after summer break! And whats up with the tea leaves? Im not captain, u know I dont drink that bitter stuff :(
[Flowing Cloud]: The tea is my mom’s contribution, I swear! Maybe you can give them to captain if you really don’t want it?
[Troubling Rain]: well…. in that case, thank ur mom for me, ok?
[Flowing Cloud]: Will do! ;) Anyway, I have to go now.
[Troubling Rain]: aight. And thx again for the present and card!
Popping one of the mango-flavoured fruit jellies into his mouth, Huang Shaotian exited the private message window he was using while texting Lu Hanwen, and scrolled back up the chat log in the Blue Rain group chat, where members had been posting about their summer adventures in the forms of (sometimes rather “artistically” blurry) photographs featuring either gorgeous sceneries of foreign countries or delicious food they’d found. In between the envious ooh-ing and fascinated aah-ing at the colourful photos were members discussing the transfers during the summer window, various Glory-related rumors and news, and other things that only reclusive young men who spent most of their days playing games on their computers were interested in.
Though most of them hailed from different parts of Guangdong, so they’d return home to visit their families and take the time to rest until the new season began in September, a few of them still found the energy and time to take a nice vacation with their friends or family and travel abroad after an intense month-and-a-half of spending hours fighting level 75 Wild Bosses and gathering rare materials in the online game.
Lu Hanwen, for example, was currently enjoying a brief but lovely trip in Taiwan with his parents. Having debuted at such a young and tender age, Lu Hanwen had missed out on a lot of experiences that teenagers his age usually encountered; he had also undergone a lot of pressure and scrutiny that kids his age usually didn’t have to suffer through — this past season had taught him that the hard way.
On the trip back to Guangzhou, with his eyes still bloodshot from the frustrated tears that he’d wiped dry just a few minutes ago, Lu Hanwen promised both his captain and vice-captain that he would train hard over the summer so that he would not make such mistakes during team matches again.
Before Huang Shaotian could open his mouth, Xu Jingxi was already ruffling the teenager’s hair from the seat behind, which earned him an indignant ‘hey!’ from Lu Hanwen but laughter from the rest of the team.
“It’s okay,” Yu Wenzhou had said, his smile gentle, his gaze calm but warm. “You already did really well, Hanwen, so take your time over the summer to recover and return for another year of hard work come September.”
Since they knew the kind of boy Lu Hanwen was, Yu Wenzhou had made sure to give Lu Hanwen’s parents a call as well.
And it seemed like the kid was enjoying himself with his family.
Huang Shaotian paused when he saw the photos that Yu Wenzhou had posted late last night. Most of the photos he’d taken were breathtaking nature sceneries: mountain ridges still coated with a layer of snow at the peaks, flat surface of a lake reflecting sapphire and jade specks surrounded by lush forests; only one or two photos featured Yu Wenzhou himself, and even then, those pictures were taken with an unsteady hand, but Huang Shaotian could still appreciate his wind-swept hair and smiling lips — a little more open and carefree than the one he always wore in front of the journalists, a little more careless — amidst the shards of shadows that fell around him from the foliage above.
He mentioned that he was travelling to the west coast of Canada to visit some relatives that had immigrated to Vancouver quite some years ago, and his cousins had taken him to all sorts of local places to hike and camp. It was a fact known by many other pro-players and the fanbase of Blue Rain that Yu Wenzhou, despite his delicate and refined appearance that he displayed before the public, was surprisingly an outdoorsy type; one wouldn’t assume so from the fact that he was the captain of an eSports team who presumably spent a lot of his time indoors, but that’d never stopped him from visiting the closest national park for a half-day hike or going on a two-week long camping trip in the mountainous region of Yunnan.
With an impatient sigh, Huang Shaotian scrolled back to the most recent messages in the group chat, but what he was seeking was simply not there. He couldn’t help but feel the immense heaviness in his heart grew a little degree more; he bit his lower lip and considered sending the other man a message but almost immediately decided against that.
He slammed his phone into the pillow beside him and dived face-down into the mattress with a muffled groan that sounded like a slowly-dying animal. He couldn’t do this anymore. He couldn’t stand this anymore.
Fuck.
Yes, he liked Yu Wenzhou.
No, not as friends or teammates or bros or anything like that. What were we — still elementary school kids?
No. Huang Shaotian more than liked Yu Wenzhou; he was in love with the guy, all right? He wanted to hold his hand, and embrace him, and kiss him, and… and yes, sleep with him. He wanted to do all those wonderful, wonderful things with Yu Wenzhou but there was only one problem: Yu Wenzhou didn’t know anything about this and Huang Shaotian didn’t know how to tell him without scaring his captain away.
Every year, without fail, Yu Wenzhou would be the first person to send him birthday wishes. In most of those instances, he’d be out of town, so birthday wishes would come in various forms: a mailed card, a text, a voice recording, or even a thoughtful little souvenir from wherever he’d been travelling to. But August 10th was almost over, and other than the small set of photos he’d uploaded onto the team group chat yesterday, Yu Wenzhou’s username and icon remained disappointingly grey in his friend list.
It was 11:46pm when the doorbell to his apartment unit rang with an urgent flair, effectively pulling Huang Shaotian out of his dreary reverie.
He wasn’t expecting any guests at this hour, though it wouldn’t be the first time that a few of his teammates, along with a few close friends from the Alliance, who apparently had nothing better to do than to drop by Guangzhou and pester him (i.e. giving him a surprise birthday party, which, despite his mumbling and grumbling, he actually appreciated), showed up at his door without as much as a text ahead of time.
What he hadn’t expect to find was one Yu Wenzhou, a timeworn suitcase sitting by his feet and a hefty duffle bag on his shoulder. It looked like he’d been rushing to get here, for his breathing was still unsteady and his sweat-stained, ink-black hair was plastered messily over his forehead and stuck to the nape of his neck.
“C-Captain? W-What are you—”
“Did I make it in time?” Yu Wenzhou asked, his brows suddenly dipping in concern, and when he didn’t get an answer from his vice-captain, he added, “my phone battery was dead on the flight back.”
“What? In time for what?” Huang Shaotian was still bewildered; he still couldn’t believe that Yu Wenzhou — who was supposed to be in the wilderness somewhere in the west coast of North America roasting marshmallows over a bonfire or hunting bears or whatever it was that they did when people went camping — that Yu Wenzhou was currently standing in his doorway.
He blinked once, twice, speechless.
“Shaotian…” Yu Wenzhou reached over and touched him gingerly on the shoulder. “Your birthday. Did I come back in time for your birthday?”
Oh.
“It’s not midnight yet,” Huang Shaotian replied numbly, at least the last time he checked, which wasn’t that long ago, actually.
“Great!” Yu Wenzhou heaved a relieved sigh, and then with a softer smile and a warm gaze that was similar to the usual one he gave his teammates —but it was slightly off, yet Huang Shaotian was still too stunned by his captain’s sudden appearance that he couldn’t quite comprehend the expression that seemed so obvious when he thought back upon it later on — he said, “in that case, happy birthday, Shaotian.”
“T-Thank you,” Huang Shaotian lowered his head to hide the flush that’d suddenly bloomed across his cheeks, realizing that for once, he couldn’t look directly into Yu Wenzhou’s eyes. He was afraid of discovering what lay within those ink-blue depths; he was scared that he’d see something wonderful there only to find out that it was all in his imagination, his misinterpretation, a misunderstanding. Then, his logic — being lost somewhere between his fretful phone-scrolling and Yu Wenzhou’s unannounced arrival — finally caught up. “Wait, wait a fucking minute, hold on for just a second. W-what the hell are you even doing here, Captain? Aren’t you supposed to be in, like, the mountains strumming a guitar and singing songs around a campfire or something?”
Yu Wenzhou raised a brow, one corner of his lips tucked upwards into an amused grin, “I’m absolutely tone-deaf, Shaotian, or don’t you remember?”
Good lord, of course he remembered, Huang Shaotian winced visibly at the reminder. The one time their whole team decided to celebrate someone’s birthday at a karaoke was the last time they did so, because everyone belatedly discovered that, as soon as their captain, who was known to have a gentle, mesmerizing speaking voice, started opening his mouth to sing the first verse of Eason Chan’s famous ballad “Ten Years”, they all wished they’d brought some earplugs with them, even if it meant disrespecting (or insulting) their nice, kind captain.
“Okay, okay, fine, that wasn’t actually even the point. The point is—"
“Shaotian…” Yu Wenzhou interrupted softly with a helpless smile that was enough to stop the other man in the middle of his rant.
“Uh, yes?” Huang Shaotian halted, eyes widening a little.
“Aren’t you going to let me in?”
“Oh. Oh! Yeah, yeah come on in!” His blush deepened, but he turned around quickly to shuffle over and make space for Yu Wenzhou to step into his apartment. After setting his bags and shoes down at the entranceway, Yu Wenzhou made his way to the couch in the living-room, his manner casual as if he’d been here many times, felt comfortable enough to make himself at home on his vice-captain’s couch.
“You want something to drink?” Huang Shaotian was already walking towards the tiny kitchen he barely used, and without waiting for Yu Wenzhou to reply, he muttered, “I’ll get you something to drink. Uh, let’s see, what do I have in here?”
Some rummaging and a yelped curse later — presumably in his haste, he’d accidentally hit his head on something — Huang Shaotian came out with two bottles of beverage.
When Yu Wenzhou glanced over, he couldn’t help but let a corner of his lips curved up into an amused smile. For whatever reason, Huang Shaotian was currently acting like as if he was the uninvited guest, maneuvering carefully around his own home like the floor was covered in glass and he was trying not to startle the man sitting in his living-room. He placed the two bottles of peach-flavored black tea onto the coffee table and sat down gingerly beside Yu Wenzhou, taking special precaution to leave a good amount of space between them.
“You don’t seem too happy to see me, Shaotian,” Yu Wenzhou observed, picking up the bottle easily and twisting the cap off to take a sip of the artificially sweetened iced tea.
“That’s crazy talk, captain! Of course I’m happy to see you — I’m absolutely thrilled to see you!” Huang Shaotian stuttered, and decided that now was a good time to drink his tea as well, but his hands were shaking so much that it took him a few seconds before he could grip the cap properly. He gulped down the liquid as if his life depended on it, and when half of the tea had been consumed, his nerves seemed to have returned as well. He sighed, looking away, and murmured, “I was just — I didn’t expect to see you here, of all places, this late at night, is all. You could’ve said something, you know? I could’ve come to the airport to pick you up.”
“Then it wouldn’t be a surprise anymore, now would it?”
A soft hint of laugher was laced within Yu Wenzhou’s low voice, like the softest breeze ruffling through the summer flower fields — sweet and sensual.
“N-No, I guess not.”
It was the voice that caressed his heart late at night, when his dreams were consumed by the images of the man he’d grown up with — from awkward teenagers who competed with each other for a spot in the team to partners standing side-by-side, protecting each other’s backs, creating opportunities for each other to attack and invade and win — and those images had been strange yet mesmerizing. The slow fumbling fingers on the keyboard that everyone in the Alliance teased about were elegant and left spots of sparks on his bare skin, his smiling lips against the curve of his ear, his neck, his teeth sinking into his supple skin and leaving marks on his hips and the insides of his thighs, his heated breaths mixing with Huang Shaotian’s gasps, ragged and fragmented syllables of their names falling from their parted lips…
Huang Shaotian didn’t remember when he’d first started having these indecent dreams about his captain, but as much as he hated himself for having them in the first place, he couldn’t let the sensations disappear once he woke up; he couldn’t let him go.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t the first person to wish you happy birthday,” Yu Wenzhou began once more after he put the bottle of tea down, his voice slightly strained with regret as he returned his gaze towards Huang Shaotian.
“Why should you be sorry—” Huang Shaotian snapped his head up and stared directly at the other man, his topaz eyes widened with puzzlement.
“Because I want to spend every birthday with you, Shaotian, and I want to always be the first person to wish you a happy birthday,” Yu Wenzhou smiled up at him, as if the statement that just came out of his mouth was a casual, harmless comment about the weather, like it was the most apparent, most genuine sentiment in the world. He tilted his head slightly to the side so that his dark forelocks fell into his eyes, his cheeks tinting just the faintest shade of pink, his smile soft, his voice softer, “is that not obvious?”
“I—I…”
At the back of his mind, Huang Shaotian thought he knew he understood the meaning of each word, but when stringed together like this, when Yu Wenzhou — the man he respected so much as the team’s captain, the friend he treasured so much over the years of ups and downs in their career, the boy he gradually learned to admire though he’d refused to admit this when he was younger, more stubborn — when he spoke to him like this, it was difficult for Huang Shaotian to understand anything.
His mind was buzzing, rearranging the words to make sense out of them, and when it finally clicked, blood roared in his ears, tainting his cheeks red. Everything else in his brain was lost and drowned out by only one, single thought: Yu Wenzhou likes me, he likes me, he likes me, he likes me…
“Y-You’re not playing fair, Yu Wenzhou!”
“They do say those who use tactics have dirty hearts,” Yu Wenzhou’s smile grew a little bolder, a little more mischievous. He shuffled closer, and Huang Shaotian could do nothing but be captivated by the almost animalistic, hungry look in Yu Wenzhou’s eyes — an emotion he’d never seen before, an emotion he dared not fantasize about because it was too dangerous, too damn dangerous — and it wasn’t until his back hit the stiff armrest of his couch that he realized that Yu Wenzhou had successfully trapped him in between his arms.
He leaned forward until their foreheads were touching lightly, their breaths mingling — shallow, hot, irresistible.
There was nowhere for him to escape, but he didn’t want to, Huang Shaotian thought, he’d been running for years now, and he wanted to stop, to rest, to find his way home.
Yu Wenzhou’s eyes held only him, and him alone, and Huang Shaotian felt his heart beating beneath his ribs, beating so hard he was afraid Yu Wenzhou might hear it, might tease him for it, but then Yu Wenzhou was holding his hand and guiding it so that his palm was lying flat against the left side of his chest, and Yu Wenzhou’s heart was palpitating hard, too, like he’d been running for miles, for years.
And Huang Shaotian thought with a smile, gods we’d both been such idiots.
“So, Shaotian, what do you say? Will you let me?” Yu Wenzhou asked in a whisper, words branded on skin.
“Let you… what?” Huang Shaotian sounded weary. This may be a confession — one that he’d only dreamed too many times about in the past, it was true — but he hadn’t forgotten the fact that he was still dealing with one of the great tacticians of Glory.
“Let me accompany you on your birthdays in the years to come,” Yu Wenzhou answered easily, brushing the tip of his thumb gently across Huang Shaotian’s cheek, feeling the heat pooled there, his mesmerized gaze, the way his irises darkened at his touch.
“Only if your kissing skills are better than your terrible hand-speed,” Huang Shaotian challenged him with a shaky grin.
“You’re on,” Yu Wenzhou chuckled, and closed the distance between them with a kiss, too ready and keen to show Huang Shaotian what he was capable of.
This, Huang Shaotian decided faintly before he was entirely distracted by Yu Wenzhou’s consuming kisses, was the best birthday he could ever ask for.

GrabKitchen Launches New Branches in Malate and Parañaque
Foodies living in Manila and the South have more reasons to be happy as GrabKitchen just launched its two newest branches in Malate and Parañaque. Now, you can Mix and Match your favorite dishes from different merchants and have them delivered to you all in one order.
GrabKitchen is the latest cloud kitchen feature from the GrabFood app which combines several restaurants and establishments in one location. These venues have different kitchens which are ready to cook their specialties for delivery without needing to set up dine-in spaces. There are several GrabKitchen branches already in operation at Makati and Sampaloc, but now it will be easier to order your favorite items with these two new branches.
I wanted to have some food delivered for my family today but couldn’t decide which restaurant to order from. We were craving for some dimsum, but we also wanted some wings and milk tea. How about some sisig and then some ice cream for dessert? We couldn’t order all those at just one restaurant, but GrabKitchen Malate made it possible to combine all of our cravings in one delivery. There are so many merchants available at GrabKitchen Malate including Omakase, Frankie's, Recovery Food, Paper Moon, Yogorino, Pepi Cubano, Dapo at Tisa, King Chef, La Tita, Selecta, So Mot, Blu Kouzina, Coco Fresh Tea and Juice, Merienda by Pan De Manila, and Go! Salads. Best of all, you only need to pay one delivery fee for everything.
I love eating shrimp dumplings so I ordered some Frozen Hakao (P530) from King Chef. I could finish all these in one sitting but I should save some for the others.
We also ordered some wings from Frankie’s New York Buffalo Wings for our appetizers. The Kevin’s Bacon (P261) is not just your ordinary chicken wings because these are all wrapped in bacon!
Here’s our order from So Mot Vietnamese Cuisine. The Pho Bo Chin (P328) is a classic Vietnamese beef noodle soup that I enjoyed slurping down.
For our main dishes, we tried the Fried Salmon Belly (P300) from Dapo at Tisa. This popular Marikina seafood restaurant has also expanded to Manila. Now, with GrabKitchen Malate, everyone within GrabFood’s delivery radius can also enjoy their specialties.
My husband loves sisig so he ordered the Doc Sisig (P175) from Recovery Food. I’m surprised that the fried egg on top still looked gorgeous even from the long delivery. For those living near the south, GrabKitchen Parañaque offers some exciting options as well like 24 Chicken, Alishan at the Alley, Army Navy, Cara Mia, La Titas MNL, Kyoto Sushi Bake, El Nacho Libre, Sheikh’s Kebab, Breakfast for 2, Black Kimchi!, Omakase, and Dapo at Tisa.
For refreshments, The QQ Tari Milk Tea (P130) from Coco Fresh Tea actually doubles as a drink and a dessert as well. But we also wanted some ice cream so we added a few bars of Magnum Ice Cream from Selecta to finish our “delivery buffet.” GrabKitchen’s Mix-and-Match feature is really such an advantage for foodies who want just a little bit of everything. These two new branches will definitely make our favorite dishes so much closer to home.

Milk Cover Tea
Different from the fusion of milk and tea in milk tea, milk cap tea is layered, the upper layer is milk cap and the lower layer is tea. The milk cap is the layer of whisked and flavored milk products on top of the milk cap tea, generally about 3cm thick. The appearance looks like a delicate, white layer. Give it a nice name, it's called milk cover. This layer of dairy products is usually made of whipped cream, milk powder (or cheese milk powder), fresh milk and evaporated milk. It is blended with various flavor supplements such as lactose, rock salt, cheese, etc. It looks like in the picture below.
Tumblr media
Drinking method
First sip it with your mouth to taste the taste of the milk cap; then use a straw into the bottom of the tea to drink the lower ice tea. When halfway through, you can mix the whole cup of milk tea evenly, and the milk flavor + tea will form another tea flavor with a completely different taste. Since the milk cover is made of fresh milk, the best taste period for each cup of milk cover tea is 1 hour.
Tumblr media
Kinds of milk cover tea
There are many kinds of milk covered tea. For example, milk gai black tea uses Sri Lankan black tea, milk gai green tea uses Alishan green tea, milk gai oolong tea uses Japanese-style carbon culture tea, and milk gai green tea uses pure Chinese jasmine green tea.

Day 59: Sun Moon Lake (7/10)
(clockwise from top left) boats at the port on Sun Moon Lake, one of the large temples by the lakeside, a candid of Phoebe on the cable car, a good boi manning the shop counter
Today we headed to Sun Moon Lake, one of the popular attractions near Taichung. The tourist package tickets we bought were on the expensive side and they only accepted cash, so we found ourselves running out of money quicker than expected. At least when we got there, our itinerary was basically all laid out and paid for, so there weren’t any troubles there. We were able to experience all sorts of transportation – bus, boat, and cable car. The scenery was quite nice, and the lake had some of the cleanest water I’ve seen since leaving the US. The food was pretty good too – the eggs brewed in the famous Alishan black tea were especially delicious.
It started raining pretty hard in the late afternoon when we had finished seeing most of the main attractions, so we decided to take the bus back to our hotel. Before we left, though, we stopped at a little store in the information center, and there turned out to be a little chihuahua perched on a chair behind the counter, which was super adorable.

“Meet me on the roof in ten minutes.” // 047 out of 050Im Jaebum (GOT7)*my apologies, this may have gotten lengthy lol
Your magic is off.You have no explanation as to why, you just feel it.
But you were growing more and more nervous as the nights went on, the sky thundering on the horizon as the clouds rested over the city.
The weather had been going crazy these past few weeks, sudden rain or snow, even though it was the middle of spring. Cherry blossoms weren’t blooming and oak trees were still bare. The ocean’s water was still too cold and leaves weren’t changing colors.
You slam your fists against the railing of your balcony, only slightly concerned about the neighbors maybe waking up. With your magic on the fritz, everything around you was being affected.
Not to mention you were more exhausted than usual, dark circles under your eyes and your body weak as it leaned against the cool metal. You let out an exasperated sigh, eyes falling shut as another thunder clap sounded towards the mountains.
If this kept up, you were unsure of what was going to happen next.
When a voice sounds in your head, your shoulders tense even though your eyes remained closed.
“Meet me on the roof in ten minutes.”
The voice was deep and had an air of amusement to it, something you’ve grown to love over the years. You didn’t bother with the ten minutes, you were never good with orders, so you bound up the staircase and throw open the door to your building’s roof.
“I said ten minutes. Eighty years and you still can’t follow simple instructions.”
You grin at Im Jaebum as he turns to you, mask covering half of his face as he stuffs his hands into the pockets of his favorite black leather jacket. You walk towards him, legs wobbly, as raindrops start to fall. Surprise is evident on his face, eyes shooting upwards as water descends.
In a matter of seconds, his eyes start to glow, the emerald green color intensifying as his magic moves through him and then outwards. The rain keeps pouring but he’s created a sort of dome around you both, untouched by the change in weather. You wince when his eyes meet yours, questions no doubt scurrying through his mind.
“You wanna explain why it’s March and it’s raining?”
You shrug, toying with your hair, “Spring showers?”
“Yah. Spring showers don’t usually come with flood warnings. What’s going on? I leave for a month to see Jackson in Macau and suddenly this? Mark hyung called and said I should maybe come home and check on you.”
Silently, you curse Mark for ratting you out, words caught on your tongue as you try and form sentences. You stare at him and he just waits patiently, eyes burning holes into your already flushed skin.
“My magic Jae. I don’t know. It’s been weird lately. Simple things like spells sure, I can cast no problem. But the bigger the use of magic, the more weak my body feels. I can’t even mutter a strong incantation without getting dizzy and an immediate hail storm in Busan.”
His brows furrow together and you know that under his mask, his lips are set into a thin line. “Why didn’t you call me?”
You snort, arms crossing over your chest, “Im Jaebum. I’m one the most powerful enchantresses anyone has ever seen in the last three centuries. One that doesn’t need to go crying to her almighty warlock of a boyfriend. I thought it was nothing. I didn’t see a need to make you rush all the way back here, especially since you haven’t seen Jackson since he moved away. But now that you are back, and now that you see my problem, just help me fix it.”
The last bit came out in a sort of whine and you begrudgingly noted how an amused look passed his face.
“Well, since you asked nicely.”“Don’t be an ass. A solution please.”“I’m sure Jinyoung has one. And I’m sure, once we visit, he’ll be irritated you didn’t come to him right away. He’s busy training Yugyeom to better control his magic but you know he’d drop it all to come help you.”“I didn’t want to be a burden.”
He grabs your hand, fingers warm against your ice cold digits. You can feel how worried he is, especially now that’s he’s gotten a better look at you. Magic or not, you could always read Im Jaebum.
“You’re never a burden love. Now come on, hold tight.”
You quickly nod, letting him support your weight as his arms wrap around you. You could feel his magic, feel it moving through him like slow waves as it started to wash over you. Your skin prickles as the magic strengthens and you don’t need to look up to know Jaebum’s eyes are glowing, like they do everytime he taps into his abilities. It was like a well, stored up and waiting until it’s needed. His chest expands as he channels the magic outward and before you know it, you’re in front of Jinyoung’s small home in the countryside.
Teleportation was so convenient.
Slowly, you let go, careful to not get too dizzy. With your body feeling weaker than usual, you didn’t want anyone unnecessarily worrying from your ‘I worry about absolutely everything’ boyfriend.
“Noona!”
You’re lifted into the air, Yugyeom’s strong arms strong but gentle enough not to crush you. You let out a soft laugh, running your fingers through the maknae’s hair in hello. Jinyoung comes out then, glasses perched on his nose, eyes scanning the pages of his immensely thick and heavy grimoire.
“Kim Yugyeom. Until you’ve mastered your basic spells and incantations, don’t go running…oh. Annyeong noona. Hyung. What brings you by?”
Jaebum wordlessly makes eye contact with Jinyoung and you know they’re speaking without actually opening their mouths. Telepathy took years to master, it was actually one of the harder abilities, but both Jaebum and Jinyoung had been reading each other’s thoughts since they were children.
You watch Jinyoung’s eyes widen just a fraction, darting to you and then back to his book. He turns back towards the house, throwing a ‘come in’ over his shoulder. Yugyeom follows, muttering something about telepathy not being fair, and Jaebum goes in after you.
“So you’re the reason the weather has been so weird noona.”
Your cheeks heat up, the room starting to slightly shake. Yugyeom’s brows shoot up into his hair and Jaebum just sighs, sudden emerald eyes quieting everything down. Jinyoung observes you carefully, hands wrapped around the grimoire as you slightly sip the tea he had given you.
“In all my years I’ve never seen your magic be anything but perfect. Have you done anything or eaten something that maybe is somehow affected your abilities?”
You shake your head, “No. Nothing is different. I was in Jihae maybe a week or so ago and when I got back…that’s when I noticed. The weather. My exhaustion. I can’t even do simple spells Jinyoungie.”
“What were you doing in Jihae?”
Jaebum’s voice surprises you, eyes meeting his, “I was visiting Jiyeon. She said she had some herbs that help with the enhancement of location spells and I figured I’d pick some up. You had already left for Macau.”
“And nothing weird happened?”
You think for a moment, “…no. Well…she had a guest in her shop but we barely exchanged more than ten words. She was just a halmeoni that runs a flower shop down the street. She gave me peonies that I stuck in the kitchen.”
Jinyoung’s head snapped up then, pupils dilating, “She gave you flowers?”
“Ne. They’re lilac.”
He turns to Jaebum, expression panicked, “Hyung, I need to see those flowers.”
“Echorpus Felis?”
Jinyoung nods, a grave look on his face as the last of the flower petals burn up. There’s a mark on your windowsill, a strange twisted carving embedded in the wood. Jaebum is outside making calls while Yugyeom played with Nora in the living room, practicing a transfer spell with her cat toys.
“Echorpus Felis. It’s a very old spell, much older than even you noona. It’s used to strip a person of their magic. Slowly until said person is dead. Without magic, we return to dust. Whoever that halmeoni was, it was no coincidence that you met in the shop. By giving you the flowers, she was able to start eating away at your abilities until your magic was completely gone. And you’re one of the most powerful enchantresses anyone has ever seen. Your magic is strong and fierce. But it was draining so fast. That halmeoni, if she was one, must be equal in strength as well, if not more so.”
You sigh, hands running through your hair as you sat at your dining room table. The mark, burnt black, could still be seen from where you were seated, it’s dangerous intent hissing at you the longer your eyes remained on it.
“Someone tried to take my magic. Why? And how do I regain what’s already been lost?”
He pinches the bridge of his nose, a fist clenched at his sides, “I don’t know noona. I’ve never dealt with this before, in all my years alive.”
“Her magic isn’t gone. It was stolen.”
Two pairs of eyes land on Yugyeom, his attention still on the cat. “What do you mean Gyeom-ah?”
He turns towards you, “The mark. In the middle of the signet, there’s a tree. The Alishan Sacred Tree. There’s an old Tawainese legend I read about, where a human wanted to steal the powers of a very powerful witch living up in the mountains above her town. She hated how unfair it was, that a witch had powers and stayed up in her mountain while the villagers struggled daily. So she vowed to take the magic and use them. She traveled to the tree and it granted her a wish. She was able to take the witch’s magic after offering some food to her. But once the witch found out, enraged, she took back her magic.”
Your eyes widened, “How?”
“She killed the human,” whispered Jinyoung, “I remember that legend. She proved that, even without her magic, she was a capable person. So the tree took the wish back and transferred the magic to who it thought was stronger. Yugyeom. You read that?”
He snorted, “I read hyung, okay?”
“….I can’t kill someone!”
Jaebum entered then, removing his hood and shaking off the water from the rainstorm you caused outside when you had all teleported home. Four other bodies entered after, faces familiar as they came into the light of your apartment.
“Mark. Jackson. Youngjae. BamBam. You’re all supposed to be scattered across the globe. Don’t tell me he called you call here?!”
Jackson grinned, dark hair dripping water onto your hardwood floor. “Of course we did noona! Hyung said you’d need our help. So here we are!”
“If it’s an attack on you, it’s an attack on the rest of us,” Mark said gently, oversized sleeves running over his hands.
“So what do we do? Who needs ass kicking?” Jaebum hits Bam on the back of the head, sending him a quick and playful eye roll.
“No asses are getting kicked. Yet. First, let’s figure out how to get her magic back. Everyone sit, I’ll order food, and Jinyoungie can do that thing with the books he always does.”
“Yah. That thing with the books has saved all your asses a thousand times over the past few centuries so shut the hell up and let me conjure up my stuff.”
They all watch as the room goes dark, Jinyoung’s eyes going from their deep brown to a violent strike of red. His hands stretch forward over the tabletop and his lips quickly move as he barely whispers the incantation. Your table fills up quickly, Jinyoung’s leather tomes stacking up on after the other. Mark smiles at him as Youngjae whistles, impressed. When the lights are back, your resident bookworm starts to flit through pages in search of anything that can help. The boys join in and you decide to go to the kitchen, that black mark drawing you near. Jaebum’s arms wrap around you and you lean into his embrace, relishing the feel of his magic giving you a little energy.
“We’ll figure this out baby. Don’t worry. You’ll get it back.”
He can’t see you, but your eyes burn violet as you eye your windowsill.
“I know I will. And I’ll make sure whoever took it will never try it again.”
A/N: We really have to stop meeting like this. Lol. As usual, I’m immensely sorry I haven’t been posting. My usual excuses like ‘too much life is happening and not enough inspiration’ are applicable here. Again, sorry. I’m trying to focus more on the drabbles since I’ve hit a wall with ‘Leather and Onesies’ and need to head back to the drawing board. And in focusing on the drabbles, I came to the conclusion that to finish them, I need to stop trying to go in order. Hence, this post (which is #47 on the list). I’m just going to pick them randomly and write, hopefully completing this drabble game sooner than later haha.
Anyway, Hope my darling…all my wishes that you enjoy this. As always, sending my love.
xoxo, Mo

Golden Lily Oolong - BTTC
Tumblr media
Golden Lily is a wonderful high mountain oolong grown in Taiwan.
Tumblr media
Steep this tea at 195F (or boiling for those who prefer to boil their oolongs) for 15 second infusions, increasing time with each infusion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Golden Lily is from Beautiful Taiwan Tea Company. This is a company I trust and buy from frequently, I’ve yet to be disappointed with what I’ve got from them, and I’ve got a LOT. They even made me a lover of black tea!
Anyways... on to the tea. This tea is a Jinxuan varietal from Alishan harvested in the spring of 2016. First infusion is light and floral, reminding me of orchid and dandelion. With each infusion I get more vegetal and fruity notes adding to the complexity of this tea. I love golden lily because of how refreshing it is, I always feel rejuvenated and clear of mind afterwards. Gongfu steeping, in my opinion is the only way to enjoy delicate oolongs to ripe puerhs, it lasts you so long, making it economical while giving you an experience with each infusion.
If you're interested in this tea, you can purchase it here.
Be sure to follow my instagram! @tea_tography
If you have any questions comments or concerns please feel free to send me a PM! Want to decide which tea I review next? Don’t hesitate to ask!
xoxo
