I archived Pokemon Home for storage space a while back, but I've since gotten a memory card. Once it finishes downloading again, I'll be ready to show these 5 star tera raid dens who's boss with my 6 IV level 100 pokemon.

Orthworm, Revavroom, Eelektross, and Toedscruel are my core 4. My natural instinct is to fill the other two slots with Toxapex and Dragalge- namely the two from my Sword team- but weighing options is fun. I have a problem with fire, and both would deal with that. I have a problem with (special) electric, and Dragalge can deal with that. Half the team would be weak to ground, yes, but the other half is levitate, earth eater, and a grass type. Orthworm alone is enough to counter ground types. And most other things.

I also still have my eyes on Slither Wing, who I haven't used because I never caught a good one. But a bug type with First Impression and Leech Life...it's basically a faster and slightly stronger Golisopod. Different set of weaknesses, but I can handle fairies. I don't quite know what to do against psychic types even if I ran Slither Wing since it's also weak to them, but high risk high reward is always the case with mons that have a 4x weakness. I think it should have been a Bug/Dragon but that's neither here nor there.

I should also keep my eyes open for dark options since psychic is a problem and ghosts are immune to Body Press.

Game of the Year 2020...?

Ive scrolled the list of games that came out this year to see what my GOTY ended up being, but turns out the only game I played in 2020 that released that year was, uh…….

Fucking good game but like I’m not gonna hand it GOTY by default (That goes to Hades, based solely impressions from other people). Actually, I’m not handing out any awards, really. So I guess I’m just gonna go over a bunch of the other games I did play last year, regardless of whether or not they came out then.

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition

A mate got me this for my birthday in December 2019, and unlike the other games I got then (Kirby Star Allies which I burned through that month and Octopath which I still haven’t played) I spent a fair few hours playing it last year. This was before the sequel was announced, and also a little bit after the fact- figured I should try and finish one before playing the other. Unfortunately, I have yet to purchase Age of Calamity nor finish Definitive Edition, because the former is expensive and the latter is expansive. Holy shit there’s so much fucking content in this game. I don’t think I ever will finish it to be honest, though despite the repetitiveness it never really felt boring to me. It’s the only Warriors/Musou game I’ve played, and I’d be interested in trying others based on the experience.

(I’m not playing Fire Emblem Warriors though fuck that)

Pokemon Sword and Shield DLC: The Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra

Sword and Shield felt somewhat lacking on release, and while the DLCs released this year did much to try and fix this its still a bit shit that it required an extra paycheck out of you to get the full game- outside of outsourced mobile games like Go and Shuffle, or services such as Bank or Home, Pokemon has never actually had DLC/microtransactions, so this was a little disappointing. I’d argue that it absolutely wasn’t worth it when Isle was released, as fun as the content was it was again, lacking. Crown Tundra I would argue exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations, however- the new and returning mons are cool and welcome (I despised Calyrex’s design on first reveal but their behaviour in story redeemed it more than enough), and the Max Lair Adventure offered a surprisingly replayable romp that has been great to just try and grind out with friends. I can’t say I’d recommend the DLC pack though- only if because you’ve probably made up your mind already as to whether or not you’re getting it, or this doesn’t apply to you at all. I could also put basically every main series Pokemon game on here, seeing as I’m pretty sure I nuzlocked every region at some point during the year, but I don’t want to make this *that* long.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate Expansion Pass

Smash is still Smash. I don’t find myself playing it much on my own, and even in Perth get-togethers weren’t super common last year. As neat as the DLC characters released this year are for the franchise as a whole, none of them convinced me to play significantly more than usual, and I can’t wrap my head around half of them, so.

Also, I’m still salty about Byleth, and I actually really liked Three Houses, it was my first FE game. Why the fuck wasn’t it Claude????

Rivals of Aether

On the other hand, in the last few months I’ve found myself grinding match after match of Rivals with one of my best mates and the game is a fucking blast, holy shit. I still haven’t bought it for myself, but its basically 100% of the reason I have played 0 smash for the last few months since we’re too busy mashing Orcane vs Ranno over and over and not really getting tired of it. It requires a specific type of person to get into it, but if you’re in that group then its just an excellent game.

VA-11 Hall-A

I first played VA-11 Hall-A (Vallhalla, since typing that is a pain) by pirating it and playing it on my laptop in the dead of night.

It quickly became one of my favourite games of all time.

When the Switch port dropped, I felt obliged to actually pay for it this time around, since the developers had more than earned my money. And then I replayed it again, playing it on my switch in the dead of night (At least this time I had the excuse of being a nightshift worker). With the sequel unfortunately delayed into 2021, it might be time to run it back once more or drag more of my mates into Glitch City since I already forcibly exposed a few of em to it.

Fallout: New Vegas

I don’t really have much to say about FNV that hasn’t been said already, especially considering HBomberguy’s recently released video, but it is also on my top 5 list and I only got around to playing Lonesome Road and Dead Money this year. Also went out of my way to 100% achievement complete the game on Steam, which I believe is the first time I’ve done that for a game.

Zero Escape Series (Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors, Virtue’s Last Reward, Zero Time Dilemma)

The Danganronpa series’ less colourful sibling, Zero Escape was a series I finally got around to finishing after having borrowed a friend’s copy of VLR back in high school and playing it wrong due to not deleting his save file (oops,). I think VLR remains my favourite, and I really hope the series continues at some point (unlikely as it seems now) considering how ZTD missed the mark pretty hard. The first 2 games are still excellent mystery games and a lot of fun, though you do need somewhat of a tolerance for words.

A Hat in Time

Oh god this game is so fucking cute. Also, just an excellent platformer. Is the DLC still on sale? I should buy that.

Fallout 4

Its just not New Vegas. It just isn’t. I really tried with this game, I really did. The gunplay is great, modding and building shit is fun, but its just not the same.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

A couple years ago I bought a SNES Mini, but until 2020 I didn’t really have a convenient way of playing it seeing as my monitor didn’t have an HDMI port. But now I do have one with one, so I got to start playing this classic! And then stopped because of uni. Should finish that, probably.

Pokemon Stadium

I also managed to get my N64 up and running, and despite being the wrong region for most of the games available in local shops, I somehow managed to get Stadium for a great price. Got to dig out my old Red cartridge and anything. Fuck me though, this game is brutal. Seriously, Gen 1 battle mechanics are tough to deal with at the best of times, having to do battle after battle with said mechanics without losing is just nuts. I still haven’t managed to get Round 2 unlocked.

God, fuck you Blaine. Goddamn fire spin Rapidash motherfucker.

Super Mario 64 Speaking of, I managed to pick up a Japanese cartridge of SM64, complete with BLJ glitches and 3 entire save files. After much effort, I managed to actually get it working, and spent most of the night of Christmas getting smashed and trying to beat Bowser in the Fire Sea. I played a lot of the DS remake as a kid, and I feel like an idiot for struggling as much I did with the original.

This is all of course a buildup to the fact that I was lying about not assigning a GOTY. Because there is only one N64 game in my small collection deserving of Game of the Year, because its deserving of Game of the Year every year since its 1999 release.

Star Wars Episode IV: Lost Hope

Act 1 | Chapter 2

Chapter Two

“What is the meaning of this transmission, Lord Vader?” The drawling voice of Emperor Palpatine echoed in Darth Vader’s private chambers. Vader lowered himself to one knee and informed his master.

“I have captured the rebel traitor Leia Organa along with the plans stolen from Scarif,” Vader spoke, his low voice filled with reverence as he tried to please his master, “An astromech and protocol droid accompanying her were also taken into custody. Intelligence believes they are the property of Bail Organa and are searching their data records for details concerning the hidden rebel base.”

A smile filled the face of the hooded hologram. “Good,” The Emperor’s eyes were far away, “very good. With the location of the rebel base, we will be able to eradicate them and they will be powerless to stop us.”

He took a deep breath before speaking again.

“There has been a great divergence in the Force, have you felt it?”

“Yes, master,” Vader responded. Capturing the princess along with the plans had brought a great sense of finality to everything; there would be no more opposition, no more uprisings, no more rebellion–not after the galaxy experiences the power of the Death Star.

“You have done well, my apprentice. Tell Governor Tarkin that he may do as he pleases with the planet Alderaan, and once we have the location of the rebel base, he is to crush them once and for all.”

“Yes, master.”

“Vader,” The Emperor’s eyes focused on his black-clad apprentice. Though the hologram was blue, Vader felt he could see the yellow tint of his master’s eyes burning into him, “Return to Coruscant after our triumph. There is much work to be done, old friend.”

“Yes, my master.”

The hologram cut off, and Vader rose. Without the hum of the Emperor’s image, the room was silent, save for the rhythmic breathing emanating from the sith. Stepping from the chamber, Darth Vader made his way to the viewing gallery of the Death Star to deliver his master’s will to the Grand Moff.

Darth Vader, flanked by two grey officers, entered the gallery to see the Grand Moff staring out the large viewport towards the planet Alderaan in the distance. A group of stormtroopers stood at rigid attention against the far wall, a shiver of pressure moving through them as the dark lord moved past.

“Governor Tarkin.” Darth Vader addressed the Moff.

“Ah, Lord Vader,” Tarkin’s expression never changed as he turned to face the sith, he lowered his hands, clasping them behind his back, “to what do I owe the pleasure?”

Vader motioned with a slight wave of his hand and one of the officers handed the Moff a datapad.

Tarkin studied the text closely, his expression stolid and unreadable. He spoke as he read, “So the rebel base is on the fourth moon of the planet Yavin, and it appears our Chandrilan senator Mon Mothma is at the head of it all.”

“The Emperor requests that you deal with the base immediately,” Vader’s tone wasn’t particularly threatening, but the mention of the Emperor was always enough to create an edge.

The Moff looked up and lowered the datapad. “And I shall. Once Bail and Breha Organa are brought to me, I will take care of the rest.”

“I suggest you hurry, Governor,” Vader warned, “the Emperor would be most displeased if the rebels are allowed to escape.”

Tarkin smiled.

“Have you seen the Death Star in action, Lord Vader?”

“No.”

“Then you have yet to witness the true extent of the Empire’s might.”

“The true extent of the Empire’s might, Governor,” Vader pointed a black finger at the Moff, “is the Force. The power to destroy worlds is insignificant to the power of the dark side.”

Tarkin’s thin-lipped smile faded, but not completely.

“Perhaps I could give you a demonstration then. I have seen your Force, allow me to show you mine.”

Darth Vader was silent save for his breathing. His finger was lowered, but his dark gaze was still pointed very sharply at Tarkin.

“Up in the recreation office,” Tarkin spoke, taking Vader’s silence as an acceptance of his offer, “you will be able to see the show. I assure you it will be well worth the wait. The sight is truly …breathtaking.” His smile widened as he turned back to look at the blue-green world. “And I do hope you don’t mind a little company.”

Vader… The princess thought to herself. Where did he go to? Was he going to interrogate Mother and Father? Torture them?

Her fear of the black cloaked man who had killed most of the crew on her ship confronting her parents…

She didn’t want to think about it, and she didn’t have to.

No more than 5 minutes after Vader departed from the viewing gallery, the door to the office Tarkin had locked her in opened, and the dark lord stepped into the room.

Leia was silent as Vader marched towards her, his breathing growing ever louder. Just as she was sure he was going to harm her, his footsteps passed and he stood by the office window, looking down into the viewing gallery where Tarkin and his stormtroopers stood unmoving.

Leia hesitated. She wasn’t entirely sure what the meaning of intimidating her was; truth be told, the Empire had gotten everything they could want from her. She had been caught red-handed with no one knowing where she was, her life was forfeit.

Regaining her composure and swallowing her fear, Leia stood tall. The stun cuffs she wore hurt her wrists, but that was the last thing she was worried about at the moment.

“My parents,” She managed, “what does Tarkin plan on doing to them?”

Vader didn’t respond, his breathing unperturbed.

“The Governor mentioned bringing my parents aboard this place,” Leia continued, “Does he plan on questioning them? They don’t know anything. They’re innocent. I told the governor that I did this alone, you shouldn’t punish my family for–”

“Do not presume to tell me what I should or should not do, Princess,” Vader’s voice was just as heavy and menacing as it had been aboard the Tantive IV, “You would do well to mind your place as our prisoner. The Empire’s hospitality does not run deep for traitors.”

Leia stopped speaking. Her plea had failed, and once again, she realized just how powerless she truly was to stop anything. She had been given one mission–one goal–and she had failed; when her father needed her most, he placed the fate of the galaxy in her hands, and she had allowed the Empire to wrestle it from her. Now, her life, and the lives of trillions, were no better than dead.

There was a change in atmosphere as a click sounded over the room’s speakers. A low hum of a wind current and background typing filled the ambiance of the office. The noise even covered most of Vader’s breathing. As another beep sounded in the room and the familiar footsteps of stormtrooper boots hit her ears, Leia realized too late what was happening.

Rushing to the dark lord’s side, Leia stared out at the viewing gallery, and she felt her heart catch in her throat as she tried to choke out some word that would make this reality go away. All that came out was “No…”

“Queen Breha and Viceroy Bail Organa of Alderaan,” The Moff’s voice sounded as if it were right behind Leia, it made her skin crawl,“So good of you both to join me in the Empire’s hour of triumph.”

Bail and Breha Organa shared an unreadable look with one another. The slick, silver half cape Leia’s father wore over his grey suit, along with the simple pale violet of her mother’s gown, gave the impression that Tarkin had snatched them from their home.

“Governor,” Bail’s voice was filled with the passion and indignation he usually reserved for the privacy of family dinners, “what is the meaning of this? What is this thing you’ve brought us to?” His eyes blazed as he gestured at the station around them.

“This is the solution to the pitiful Rebellion you, your wife, and a handful of other extremists have gone through the trouble of creating.” Leia could see her father’s face grow a shade paler.

“I don’t–”

“Do not play coy with me, Viceroy,” Tarkin snapped, “Your daughter told us enough before my patience with her grew thin.”

“What have you done to my Leia?” Breha moved past Bail to stand in Tarkin’s face, “Where is our daughter, Governor?” Her voice was a blend of fear, anger, and something …deeper.

“Your daughter is, just like the rest of your rebel friends will soon be, dead.”

Breha took a step back, her anger gave way to the haunting reality of the Moff’s words. Bail caught her, a similar anguish played in his eyes but his tone was steel.

“We demand that you bring us our daughter this instant,” Bail insisted, “We have been loyal servants to the Empire, with nothing but good works to our name. I am a member of the Imperial Senate, Tarkin, and I demand that you bring me our daughter.” His voice seemed to catch in his throat as he finished.

Tarkin eyed Bail for a moment. “I’m afraid with the dissolution of the Senate, you have no sway here, Senator. And,” He gestured to the viewport, Bail and Breha’s eyes focused on their homeworld, “with the destruction of Alderaan, neither will you, your Grace.”

Wild confusion filled Breha’s eyes. “What do you–”

“Fire on Alderaan,” Tarkin commanded into his comlink.

A loud, high pitched ringing flooded Leia’s ears as she felt the station shake. A bright emerald beam shot outwards, directly at Alderaan. With a burst of light, the region of the planet where the beam hit seemed to explode, rising like a dark cloud into the atmosphere. The fear Leia had felt tingling in the back of her mind cut off as if she had suddenly lost her connection.

“Cities can be replaced,” the Moff’s voice resonated in the now complete silence, “I’m afraid worlds cannot.”

Bail and Breha stood quietly where they were. Stepping from Bail’s arms, the Queen of Alderaan placed her hands against the window. “Alderaan,” her voice was as distant as it had been on those evenings so long ago, “What have you done?”

“The rebel base, your Grace,” Tarkin ignored her question, “What is its location?”

No one said anything. Tarkin moved to stand next to Breha, his hands still clasped behind his back. The area where Alderaan used to be was now nothing more than a plume of debris stretching upwards, seemingly reaching out for help.

“You’re a monster,” Breha finally said, “I’ve known long before this but being able to say it…” the words were the only comfort the Queen could feel. Leia wanted to be there with her mother, but Tarkin’s sick plan was to strip her Grace of everything she held dear. First her daughter, now Alderaan, next…

“Target the planet,” The Moff spoke into his comlink.

“No!” Bail shouted, stepping forward. His heart cried out for his people as much as Breha, but he couldn’t bear to let the torment she was undergoing continue, “We’ll tell you, just…please, let our people live.”

“Bail,” Breha’s voice was hollow, “don’t.”

“I must, it’s the only way.”

“You can’t lose hope,” Tears fell from her eyes, but she was not broken, “Fear will not hold my people hostage. If you try to break us, to withhold the freedoms and liberties we have been entitled, then you will only destroy yourselves. I am Breha Organa, Queen of Alderaan, and this power you have, Governor? It cannot intimidate me.”

The Grand Moff didn’t speak. He instead motioned to the line of stormtroopers behind him. Bail and Breha were grabbed and put on their knees, facing the sight of their beloved planet. In the middle of that view, was the figure of the one man who controlled the fate of billions.

Tarkin glared down at Leia’s parents, his eyes glancing up for a moment to the window where she and Darth Vader were. If he couldn’t get his pleasure from torturing her parents, then he’d get it from torturing Leia.

“Fire when ready.”

It wasn’t slow. In fact, when it happened, Leia could have sworn she had only blinked. One second, Alderaan was there, and then it wasn’t. If it hadn’t been for the yelling of her father or the gnawing emptiness in her heart, she could’ve been having a bad dream. An awful, evil dream.

Bail’s shouting had turned to sobs, he had lost his composure and was being held up by two stormtroopers. Tarkin made him powerless to even grieve properly.

Breha, however, was silent.

“Nothing to say, your Grace?” Tarkin toyed. “No words of inspiration? Where is your hope now? Where is your rebellion? You’ve lost,” looking down at her, he gave a slight nod, and the sound of a blaster shot burned in Leia’s ears.

The yelling stopped. The crying. Everything.

All that sounded was the soft thud of Breha’s body hitting the cold station floor, a thin trail of smoke rising from the hole in her chest.

“Hope,” Breha whispered, her eyes finding their way up to the window where Leia was watching. Leia couldn’t tell if her mother even saw her, if she felt Leia’s presence at all, or knew that Tarkin had not taken everything. “… Is never lost,” Breha let out a soft breath of air, and the glow of her pulmonodes went dark.

Bail Organa’s pain rendered him mute. He rocked in place; his mouth and face were contorted in anguish, his voice failing to articulate a semblance of what he was feeling.

Tarkin stood over him next. “The last of the Organa’s. A truly lonely existence, isn’t it, Viceroy?” He turned back to the viewport, with Alderaan gone, it was now just a dark canvas of scattered debris and starlight, “Trooper, you may fi–”

The Moff coughed.

He swallowed hard, but something was caught in his throat. Trying to speak, the Imperial found himself struggling for air. His hands rushed to his neck to fight the feeling as if something invisible were choking him.

“Va…der,” Tarkin spat out as he turned to look up at the office window, his eyes aflame with a dark fury. He stumbled back slightly and rested against the dark viewscreen. Tarkin let out one last guttural inhalation before collapsing onto the floor.

The stormtroopers looked at one another, confused, wondering what to do. With a click, the audio in the office cut off, and Leia watched a group of them check the Grand Moff’s body only to find that he was indeed dead.

She let her eyes close. Hot tears ran down her cheeks as the ache of powerlessness died down. She let everything in the world slip away, save for the sound of punctuated breathing, and the weight of a heavy hand around her heart.

SWR Season 4 Predictions

So this is late and it’s probably been done before, but here are some predictions for Season 4 to tie you over for the week ahead of us!

(spoilers below for SWR and Rogue One)

Major Character Death

Okay uh… this sounds pretty bad, but I think it’s probably time one of the original 6 bite the dust. If executed well, it’s an effective strategy to raise the stakes and draw the audience into the story. So far, none of the Ghost Crew has died yet, which leads me to believe something devastating will happen this season. Also Dave Filoni promised a far darker season than anything we have seen before on this show, and what could be darker than being blinded? However, I suspect that the writers will save this effect for the second half of the season to achieve the maximum impact and feels of a particular character’s death.

Saw Gerrera’s Exile

The last we see of Saw in SWR, he was highly involved with the rebellion and already known for his extremist methods. In Rogue One, he is exiled, disgraced and desperate, slowly closing in on the existence of the Death Star. Season 4 will likely connect the dots and reveal his slow descent into madness, and his actions that will cause authority figures in the rebellion (Mon Mothma, probably) to finally lash out. Seeing as to how Saw is already present in both trailers and at least one episode (In the Name of the Rebellion), we’ll probably get to see an arc leading up to his exile.

Conflict between Saw and Kallus

These two have so much history together, it’d be a waste if there wasn’t focus on some conflict between them. On Onderon, Kallus suffered from mental and physical trauma caused by the Lasat mercenary and Saw’s extremism. With Kallus on the Yavin IV base, he’s bound to run into Saw. As an imperial defector, he’d already find difficulty in adjusting to a completely new lifestyle, but throw in Saw into the equation and Kallus’s old wounds will be reopened. Conflict will thus arise as the two characters call each others’ history and actions into question. This ultimately ties into a theme that SWR has heavily emphasised before of intention vs. action, or in other words, whether the means defines the end.

Mart Mattin

We have yet to see Mart’s reaction to Sato’s sacrifice. I can only imagine that he’d be grieved by the loss of his kin, or even angered by the rebellion’s refusal to get involved. How this emotion will provoke him to act, I’d love to see. He has a lot of potential for growth, not just as a military leader, but also as a character. I’m interested to see his character arc in season 4, like seeing him stepping up to the challenge of leadership, just like his father and uncle did before him, or slowly turning away from the rebellion. He can go either way.

Jai Kell

We know that Jai Kell is going to appear in season 4, and I applaud the writing team for not forgetting about this character and re-weaving him into the story. With the heavy plot that we’re probably going to get, I doubt there’ll be much time to focus on an arc for Jai. However, I’m sure a little bit of insight into what he’s been doing can be written into the story. Also let’s not forget that he’s likely to be force-sensitive, and wouldn’t it be fun to see Ezra teach him a force trick or two?

Resolution of Thrawn’s Prophecy

There have been some guesses, but no one really knows the true meaning of the Bendu’s ominous prophecy in Zero Hour. Since it’s the last season, there’ll probably be a resolution to this prophecy. However, alternatively, this resolution will be revealed in the Thrawn Alliances book, although we don’t know what this book is going to focus on. I’m also hopeful to see the effect that this prophecy will have on Thrawn, like becoming more wary around force-users like Vader.

Lothal’s 5 Year Plan

This plan was mentioned way back in season 2, and yet little else is revealed. Since it was “ordered by the Emperor himself”, it should have massive importance, which seems intriguing. I suspect that this plan isn't just about the TIE Defender factory, but probably also has something to do with the force, leading me onto the next point...

Lothal’s Mythology Explained

Clearly, with the mythical wolves and the Jedi temple, Lothal has a connection to the force. I’ve always been curious about the oddly high concentration of force-sensitives in Ezra’s imperial class. It’s likely that the ancient imagery that Ezra finds along with the wolves will be explained through his discoveries, linking it back to a history with force-users of some variant, like the Nightsisters on Dathomir, or Chava the Lasat wisewoman. Personally, I find it intriguing any time more of the force and its mysterious ways are revealed, and it seems that there’ll be a lot of it this season.

Connections to the Films at Yavin IV

With the crew on the Yavin IV base for this season, a much wider and more integrated look into the rebellion will be offered. The crew would thus interact more directly with rebel command, but this also means that we might see pre-established characters on base. I’m really hoping to see some connections to Rogue One, given the closeness of the timeline, like a Cassian Andor in training to be fulcrum or K-2SO ambling around the base. The fandom will go nuts for it. Also since The Last Jedi will be released in December this year, SWR will probably do something to hype the film up and link the two together.

Return of Ahsoka

Okay, we all know it’s gonna happen. Ahsoka’s story is far from over, especially in SWR. To see Snips finally return and reveal how she survived on Malachor would be fantastic, to say the least. Goodness knows the rebels and all of us needs her involvement.

STAR WARS FIGHT ANALYSIS #2 SECTOR FORCES/REBEL CELLS, ALLIANCE MILITARY CASE STUDY: PHOENIX REBEL CELL (Spoilers) Star Wars Rebels serves as the definitive canon guide on the early years of the Rebel Alliance. As such, the journey of Phoenix Squadron and the Ghost give us a glimpse into how individual rebel cells, later Sector Forces, grew to combat the Empire. The Phoenix Rebel Cell was the largest rebel cell in the early days of the Rebellion, and until the Battle of Atollon (spoilers), operated autonomously of Rebel High Command, which did not exist at the time of their formation in 4 BBY. It operated in the Outer Rim Territories as part of a network of rebel cells, with the goal of fighting the Empire as best they could. Under the command of Cmdr Jun Sato, Phoenix Squadron was populated by A-wing fighters, CR-90 Blockade runners, GR-75 transports, and a Pelta-class frigate that served as the first Phoenix Home. They operated primarily in the Outer Rim, and were strengthened by the addition of the 2 Jedi, Mandalorian, Lasat Honor Guard, and Twi’lek pilot of the Lothal Cell: The Ghost Crew. Despite its fighting ability, Phoenix Squadron suffered heavy losses several times before The Battle of Yavin, with the first Phoenix Home being destroyed by Darth Vader himself. This led them to flee, and caused them to settle on Garel, where their base was also ambushed. Despite this, the Cell kept growing, and fighting. Later engagements saw the Rebels, desparate for bases and allies, recruit Captain Rex on Seelos, and come to an agreement with the Protectors of Concord Dawn for safe passage through their system. A mission to Ryloth also allowed them to find a new Phoenix Home, an Imperial Quasar-class fighter carrier, and an additional raid led to the capture of decommissioned Y-Wing bombers. One of their major successes was finding a new base of operations, Chopper Base, on Atollon. Major engagements of the Squadron include: The Blockade of Ibaar, Battle of Garel, Mission to Ryloth, and the Skirmish in the Archeon Nebula, not to mention countless smaller skirmishes by the Ghost Crew. The major turning point for Phoenix Squadron came in 2 BBY, when the Ghost was tasked with escorting Sen. Mon Mothma, Alliance Chancellor, to Dantooine, where she gave her Declaration of Rebellion speech, officially solidifying the Alliance Military and assembling the Alliance Fleet. Their luck would not last however, as Grand Admiral Thrawn, who had studied Phoenix Squadron and anticipated their movements, sabotaged their attack on the TIE Defender factory on Lothal, attacking Chopper Base with 5 Imperial-class Destroyers and 2 Interdictor Cruisers. This battle would prove catastrophic for Phoenix Squadron, as almost all of the Phoenix’s ships, and all of the Massassi Group’s Nebulon B Frigates were lost. This battle saw the complete dissolution of Phoenix Squadron and would have seen no survivors had House Wren and the Bendu not intervened. All was not lost however, as The Battle of Scarif saw several of Phoenix Squadron’s ships as part of the Rebel Fleet, with the Ghost also launching from Yavin IV, and one of the 3 Hammerhead Corvettes gifted to the Squadron by Princess Leia, the Lightbringer, being used to bring 2 Imperial Destroyers into the shield gate, allowing the Rogue One crew to transmit the Death Star plans to the Profundity, allowing the Rebels to destroy the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin. Phoenix Squadron always, always faced overwhelming odds, and thus took the Rebels’ hit and run tactics to heart. Their priorities during battles were never to face the Empire head-on, but to sabotage the Imperials and escape with what forces they could. They suffered hundreds of casualties and lost tens of ships due to the Empire’s superior navy, but they never stopped fighting, never lost hope, serving pivotal roles as part of the Alliance Fleet in the Rebellion’s first victory on Scarif. We still have to wait until Rebels season 4 to see what becomes of the remnants of Phoenix Squadron, but we their sacrifice would not have been in vain, and their bravery at the start of the rebellion still serves as the basic template for all Sector Forces.
