I noticed during the second chances song when they reached the stage, When Gina started to sing her verse it focused on Ej what were your thoughts?
I noticed that too! There's SO much to analyze about the "Second Chance" video. Lol. But I'll focus on what ur asking about. 😅 I'll be talking about the part of the vid where the Core 4 are up on the stage (2:00 to 2:41). I'll also be using my own gifs (which is something I've never done before so forgive the poor quality. I don't know what I'm doing. I tried. 🤷🏽‍♀️😂) Now, on to my response!
Before addressing the specific part ur referring to, I wanna talk a little about what comes a bit before:
Tumblr media
In this part, EJ actually sings "It was just another chance to fall" (w/ Gina also singing the italicized words). When the Core 4 are finally on stage, the first transition we see is between Portwell (from EJ to Gina). They both harmonize on “chance to fall” b/c that’s just it! They both fell for e/o hard. Then Gina sings “I wonder” on her own b/c she’s wondering how things could go so wrong b/t her and EJ. She thought she got it right this time, unlike with Ricky. Of the four characters, EJ seems the most hopeless voice during the song b/c he feels so dejected by the miscommunication brought on by Jamie. In contrast, Ricky’s and Nini’s verses and tone of voice seem the most hopeful. Gina’s is somewhere in b/t. In the shot above, you can clearly see the camera pan to include the stage light during her part. In that transition, there’s a literal and metaphorical light burning b/t PW. Gina’s still “wondering” what could happen to change things b/t her and EJ. One minute, they had a risotto date planned, next minute, he’s backing out. How did it go so wrong in just a few hours? She desperately exclaims, “I wonder” b/c she’s still holding onto the hope things could change, that the metaphorical tide could turn (obviously by the end of the episode, we all know it does!😉) Granted, the same stage light is also b/t Ricky and Gina, but there’s something to be said about the fact he’s also separated from the core group (EJ, Nini, and Gina). Their shippers could deff make the case that maybe there’s s/t burning b/t them still, I could see that. 🤔 To me, it reads more like Ricky still being uncomfortable being a theater kid and being onstage, hence why he’s separated from the group (EJ and Gina have always appreciated the spotlight, and Nini has found her voice and wants to step into the light) but it’s up for interpretation🤷🏽‍♀️:
Tumblr media
Ricky also sings "what can make the fire burn" as he walks on stage, which, to me, sounds like his relationship with music and performing moving forward. He's not always the most committed to the musical each season, so maybe S3 will allow him "to begin again"? 🤷🏽‍♀️ Or maybe it's gotta do w/ Gina and Ricky? Who knows? 😅 Anyways, enough of that tangent. Back to Portwell! 😚
Tumblr media
As Nini sings her refrain, "I'm finding who I wanna be", and Ricky sings, "begin again", the camera focuses on Gina. We see her reaction to those specific lines, which I think is intentional. Gina starts S1 as the new transfer student at East High, where she had to figure out who she wanted to be and literally begin all over again b/c of her constant moves. These lines speak to her. That's a part of her journey in S1 and S2.
Tumblr media
What stands out to me in the part above is EJ singing "I thought I knew what I want" while the camera focuses on Ricky. We don't even really see EJ while he sings that part, he's just blurred in the background. Ricky's simultaneously singing "begin again", which makes me think he's gonna realize that what he thinks he wants in S3 is gonna prevent him from truly beginning again. What I mean is that Ricky thinks he can begin again w/ Lily, that what he needs is to be in another relationship to move on from Nini. He's gonna have to rethink what he wants in S3 once Lily's exposed for her sneaky ways (i.e. the harness). 🤨 I don't think Ricky beginning again in S3 includes being in a relationship...🤐 Now, to get to the specific part you are referring to in ur ask😅:
Tumblr media
As Gina sings, "I'm safer when I'm on the run", the focus fades from her to EJ. We are meant to see his reaction to her refrain. You can clearly see that at this moment, EJ is hurting just as bad as Gina's feeling. This is not a one-sided, unrequited relationship. Gina's hurting. EJ's hurting. Gina's wanting to run away. EJ's wanting the same. Just like Gina feels like she's safer when she's on the run, EJ does too. He even tries to quietly excuse himself from the afterparty at Slices to escape the pain he's feeling b/c of the miscommunication. EJ tries to run away from his feelings to protect himself, until our girl stops him in his tracks. 😂 But guess what? The running doesn't stop. Gina and EJ end S2 running towards each other b/c that's what makes them feel safe. They make each other feel safe. 🥰 Gina sings about feeling safer when she's on the run, and the camera focuses on EJ? Ughhhh I love them so much. 🥰😍🤗 "Second Chance" was definitely foreshadowing how Portwell's story ends in S2 and how it begins in S3. 😚

The Rewatch Academy: Episode 3 of Season 1
Tumblr media
“Extra Ordinary”
I am in no way a good analyst so my little analysis and speculations probably sound a bit goofy or pretty wild and probably mean nothing at all. Everything I put into this post about each episode is purely what I noticed or thought, whether it's funny or serious. I will be making jokes, so please just leave it at that (in no way am I trying to make fun of an actor and or character!) I am also in no way saying I noticed this stuff first. This is just what I noticed while rewatching these episodes
☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂
1x01 | 1x02 | 1x03 | 1x04 |
☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂ ☂
Tumblr media
☂ First off I’d like to say that this is one of my favorite episodes of this season. It’s just soooo good
☂ The second comic book in the window features the Televator from the actual comics, so that has to be canon in the show! Also at the time that that second comic came out, Five had already left since we don’t see him on the cover
Tumblr media Tumblr media
☂ It’d be cool if they actually printed Vanya’s book for fans to read
☂ Well Diego isn’t wrong when he called Hazel and Cha Cha animals because of their masks
☂ Honestly I feel Vanya’s struggle with chair placement. I’ve fortunately had the luck of playing in all three clarinet chair placements, but 1st chair is challenging. I personally found each placement very fun to play, especially 3rd, and I hope Vanya does too! (why am I talking like she’s real)
☂ Hazel talks about people living ordinary lives, but didn’t he live like that too at one point? How does The Commission recruit people? If they get ordinary people, do they wipe their memories of their previous lives?
☂ “Let’s see’em get out from behind their desks, get their hands dirty for once.” Well Hazel, Five does indeed do this even though he only had a desk job for a day. Still, he got to experience both worlds
☂ My mind is blanking on this, but how did Five get that cut on his arm? Was it from a bullet wound at Gimbel’s?
☂ Five must have a high pain tolerance to stitch his own wound but his bandaid probably wouldn’t stick due to the wet blood he slapped it over. Five sweetie you need a cotton pad and gauze for that one
☂ Wait, you’re telling me that The Umbrella Academy boys’ top uniform consists of a tank top, a white dress shirt, a tie, a sweater vest, and then the blazer? Someone asked Reginald what he wanted for the uniforms and he just said “Yes.”
☂ Five: *puts hands in pockets only to immediately take them out*
☂ Aidan almost sounds like he has an accent when he says “I'm done funding your drug habit.”
☂ Five’s so soft talking to his wife
☂ No Leonard, your bread and butter is being a creep
☂ Also, he thinks wood carving is embarrassing? If someone came up to me and showed me something they carved out of wood I would be so jealous cause it’s such a neat form of art
☂ Leonard saying that he carved wood, and in that case wooden figures, when he was a kid is a slight foreshadow of all of his tampering with his Umbrella Academy figures. He can make wooden figures but he’s also destroyed a handful of the Hargreeves figures
☂ “Never really did like The Beatles.” Well sir you’ve made me dislike you even more
☂ Vanya asking Allison if her siblings wanted her at the family meeting bugs me a bit. I absolutely get that she was literally left out of anything and everything that had to do with her siblings when she was younger, but Allison just asked her to come back home for a family meeting. Allison wouldn't have walked around looking for Vanya only to tell her that they were having a family meeting and that she wasn’t actually invited. Allison is including her in on a family meeting but Vanya is just in a bit of disbelief that she’s being included
☂ Ah yes, the only PTSD flashback for Five we see in the show! He looks so scared when he snaps out of it. I believe it was somehow triggered by the kids (I could be wrong) but do you think Five sometimes panics when he looks at himself in the mirror now since his body is the same age it was when he got stuck? Also it’s very subtle but when Luther opens the door, Five slightly jerks/flinches back. I wish we would see more of this in the show since it’s one of his major traumas
Tumblr media
☂ “Does it matter? It’s Klaus.” Ouch! Well Five I hope you know that your siblings are somewhat thinking the same thing since they believe that you’ve lost your mind and are practically an old man crying “Apocalypse!”
☂ Five does an ever so slight huff and smirk when Luther tells him that the meeting at the Academy is important. He finds it a little funny but so frustrating in his mind that Luther doesn’t know what’s truly important
☂ Also I love that Aidan has to turn to the side so that he can keep it together after Klaus talks about his chocolate pudding waxing. Either that or he’s portraying Five as being frustrated and in disbelief. Also this is the first time I’ve noticed that he says “Ay, ay ay...”
Tumblr media
☂ “We’re all you have. And you know it.” Oh Luther, you’re failing to see that that’s why he’s acting like this right now. He’s all frantic and crazed about trying to stop the apocalypse so that he can protect and save all that he has
☂ Five certainly is mad at Luther during his mini lecture. He’s clenching his jaw tightly and when he first speaks he hisses out the words through gritted teeth. He even called Luther by his number. He’s very impatient at this point and doesn’t care for Luther’s act of attempting to be a leader
☂ This is their first, and certainly not last, time watching Klaus go by in front of them doing something he shouldn’t be doing
Tumblr media
☂ “You haven’t been home in a long time, Vanya.” Sir you were also just on the moon for four years. Yeah Vanya was away for a long time but Grace easily could have changed too during the four years you were gone
☂ How sweet, even though Five hasn’t really been home they want to include him in on the family vote :]
☂ I’ve noticed that in S1 that David really mumbles his lines. A lot
☂ I wish we got more flashbacks of the younger Umbrellas
☂ Diego my beloved mama’s boy ♥️
☂ It’s confusing as to which country TUA takes place in, but it’s really not supposed to be a specific one. It’s portrayed as being in North America, but you can see behind Cha Cha when she gets out of the car at the Academy the flag of the RAF, which Canada would have at a monument since it’s a Commonwealth country. At the same time though Delores came from Gimbels, which was a department store chain across the U.S
☂ The light above Five’s portrait is slightly crooked, which probably means no one has really been paying attention to it
☂ It makes me nervous that Klaus wipes bubbles onto his face. It looks like he got some in his eyes
☂ Ugh I love the whole scene of Hazel and Cha Cha walking around the Academy with “We’re Through” playing
☂ Diego: *has knives but instead chooses to punch and hit Hazel to try to make him let go of Allison”
☂ A rope-a-dope is a boxing tactic of pretending to be trapped against the ropes, goading an opponent to throw tiring ineffective punches. Diego sweetie Hazel wasn’t even trying to get you off of him all he was doing was choking Allison. The only person who got tired was probably you
☂ What’s the point in Diego yelling “Luther, go!” if he’s already going 💀
☂ Luther was there immediately when Hazel attacked Vanya. That means that Luther heard Vanya and was going to go get her to safety
☂ I will never stop signing my praise for the entirety of the “Sinnerman” fight scene(s). It gives me chills every single time. Easily one of the best scenes in all of the show
☂ Klaus must really have his music blasting if he can’t hear the gun shots right next to him
☂ I’ve always wondered if Allison actually registered in her mind that “The boy” is Five when Cha Cha says that’s who they’re looking for. Either she does realize that’s Five, is simply just angry that those two are looking for a boy, or registers in her mind that it’s Five through his superhero codename even though Cha Cha’s not referring to him in that way
☂ Diego is full on just standing in the background watching Allison get beat up by Cha Cha 🕴
☂ I love Diego’s little hand flap when he gets hit in the hand fighting Cha Cha
☂ Okay so I make everything about Five, but the whole Cha Cha fight scene with Allison and then Diego kind of scares me. Cha Cha and Hazel are both amazing assassins (they’re both probably right below Five) and neither Allison nor Diego could stop her by themselves. Could you imagine Five fighting one of his siblings? Especially with his spatial jumps? We already got a glimpse of his true combat skills when he fights Lila in S2. What a scary little old man
☂ “Vanya, get out of here!” Again, wanting to make sure that Vanya is safe and gets away. He even tried to go look for her
☂ Something I don’t really get about the Hazel and Luther fight is why doesn’t Luther just overpower him? Luther has super strength and on top of that he has giant muscles due to the gorilla DNA. Shouldn’t he be able to beat Hazel to a pulp? Maybe we have to consider that Hazel might have been altered by The Commission to be stronger and more durable, but they haven’t mentioned that in the show
☂ “Ah, you gotta cut down on that fast food, soldier.” What are you talking about Diego he literally just got off the moon two days ago aflksjfdk
☂ So Luther was too injured to jump out of the way of the chandelier but was able to push it up off of himself? 🤔
☂ I personally think that Luther’s body design adaptation for the show is really cool and that they gave him the perfect amount of bulk without making him look ridiculous
☂ This has been pointed out before, but cross-stitch foreshadowing, baby
☂ Again, Diego my beloved mama’s boy ♥️
☂ Well at least Diego thought about Vanya dying before thinking about his siblings dying because of her. The latter is ironic!
☂ The clock above Luther’s mirror reads approximately 1:30 am. Hazel and Cha Cha didn’t want to wait until morning
☂ I wonder how different it would be if Five was present at the Academy when Hazel and Cha Cha attacked. He probably would have surrendered himself to them, but it's fun to entertain the idea that he would go apeshit if he knew that they were harming his family in order to find him
☂☂☂☂☂☂☂

Good, Unused Operators Allen X Recommends Leveling
Welp, 7-16 is kicking my tail at the moment because of the goddamn Herald spam... Jeez, five Heralds than increase mortar attack speed. This game can be a real pain sometimes, I swear.
Anyway, while I’m agonizing over how I now have to power level Cliffheart for this latest map, I’ve been thinking a lot about certain operators. With this limited banner going on and the regrettable amounts of whaling I did for W I’ve had some time to ask myself about all the operators I have and some of their utility. A lot of gacha games tend to be pretty cruel with their pull rates and meta, and Arknights is probably one of the few games that's decent with both. Due to the way maps work, most meta picks are only for about 60% of maps and supply maps, there’s still some strategy involved. The Blaze-Weedy-Saria trifecta can’t conquer everything, thankfully.
So I wanted to take some time to discuss the lesser used and off-meta Operators of this game and explain some of their utilities.
Tumblr media
Zima
I only feels fitting to start this out with a Vanguard, and Zima has pulled in clutch for a lot of these chapter 7 maps. Kit-wise Zima has Scavenger’s attack boost plus DP on kill with her S2, making her a machine of DP on certain chokepoints. Not only that, she actually pretty tanky for a vanguard, matching up to some low level defenders in terms of defense. Where Texas would crumble like the glass cannon she is, Zima stands tall and can give a beating as well as she takes one. Not only that, but her personal talent at E2 lets her lower the DP cost of all Vanguard operators, meaning you can jet out Myrtle very quickly and maybe have some DP to spare to quickly drop Zima afterwards. However... it takes quite a while for her S2 to get ready, so it’s best to keep her on maps that don’t need the attack boost immediately.
Tumblr media
Perfumer
I admittedly don’t use Perfumer since I have Angelina and Ptilopsis, but her passive healing talent means characters like Vulcan, Hellagur, and Utage can have reliable, passive healing for free, which is always nice if you don’t have Sora or Angelina. Something I think a lot of people look over with 4-stars is that they’re cheap to promote. You don’t need insane 5th tier resources or a lot of chips and LMD to promote them. And while AoE healers aren’t meta, they’re helpful at times.
Tumblr media
Shirayuki
Shirayuki is another cheap 4-star to upgrade, but her kit is actually really good. An AoE sniper who’s S2 gives her arts damage. And anything in this game that gives a character arts damage tends to be a tier higher than they would be otherwise, as very few enemies have heavy arts resistance with the exception of certain bosses. And again, she’s a cheap unit to promote, so if you don’t have Meteorite or Sesa, Shirayuki is a good pick. This woman carried a lot of my Annihilation runs before I got Sesa, so don’t under estimate her.
Tumblr media
Waai Fu
Waai Fu is a fast-redeploy operator that can silence enemies and keep those exploding spiders at bay. She can outdo Red and even Lappland in some regards depending on the map. She does good damage if you level her up enough and her base skills are great in the workshops. She’s one of the many unexpected MVPs of my Contingency Contracts runs, saving my tail more than I care to admit.
Tumblr media
Gummi
She’s a cheap Saria who’s S1 is extremely reliable. I’d honestly recommend her over Saria in some cases thanks to her lower DP cost. I don’t get much use out of her S2, so I can’t say much there. She’s worth promoting though, especially if you don’t have Saria.
Tumblr media
Cutter
This is a blind recommendation since I haven’t used her much, but she’s essentially a cheaper Ch’en with more spammable skills. And while I already have Ch’en, she’s next on the list of Four Stars I want to level.
Tumblr media
Broca
As much as I clown on Infall for simping him, and as much as I will continue to clown on Infall for simping him, any guard that can do arts damage is instantly more valuable than most, especially how clustered these Chapter 7 maps are getting. And Broca is an AoE Guard with access to arts damage. And while his S2 makes him stunned and block 0, Specter’s S2 has a similar drawback, and she’s in the meta. This is also another blind recommendation, but one I feel very comfortable making, as his S2 increases his attack range and you can just place him in front of a Defender to solve this problem.
Tumblr media
GreyThroat
I talked about GreyThroat on this blog before, but just to reiterate, GreyThroat is a weaker Exusiai, but she also has high DPS, and has an easier time getting potential and a shorter DP cost. She can melt bosses with weaker physical defenses like Frostnova and Mephisto, and you don’t have to worry about her auto-activating her skill when it isn’t needed like Exusiai. She’s a good character to promote and raise if you want a cheaper option instead of Exusiai.
Tumblr media
Pramanix
On that end, I also said on this blog that Pramanix is kind of niche, but great at debuffing enemies. Her range is insane and her DP cost is generously small considering her utility as both debuffer and emergency caster. She’s pretty good for Contingency Contracts, but... not really viable anywhere else, not safely viable anyway.
Tumblr media
Sesa
Anyone with Sesa that hasn’t E2′d him yet is honestly sleeping on him. Sesa is fantastic and is probably one of the better AOE snipers. I haven’t done much with Meteorite since I got here way after promoting Sesa, but Sesa’s damage on his S2 melts chokepoints. In the right hands this man is unstoppable. He’s destroyed entire clusters of enemies in just two bombs with his S2. His only downside is that his S2 turns his bombs into timed explosives, so some enemies can just walk away from the explosion without getting hit. His targeting’s also a little weird, but in the right chokepoint everything dies.
Tumblr media
Sora
I think ever since Aak came onto the scene people kind of forgot Sora existed. She can stun or buff enemies depending on your needs. This is great for chokepoints and she can give passive healing like Perfumer, though for units in her range only. This is a great support unit overall. Nothing I’d recommend you should bring all the time, but... she’s good regardless.
And... that’s it for now. Time to go back to 7-16 kicking my ass...
Ugh...
Well, next time I’ll probably talk more about Arknights’ gacha and gacha elements... when I conquer this goddamn, cursed level.

this is gonna sound dumb but i think it’s interesting that i found it very easy to make teen wolf seem cinematic in gifs or at least to conceptualize of how to make it seem cinematic and i just don’t have that feeling with rnm. i haven’t felt like making gifs in a while but even when i did, i struggled a lot with finding shots that spoke to me, and i’ve started to wonder if it’s the result of the constantly rotating cast of directors.
like okay just hear me out for a second because i got curious and looked it up and this seems absolutely bonkers to me and i gotta write it down.
rnm s1 had 10 different directors across 13 episodes.
tw s1 had 3 different directors across 12 episodes.
rnm s2 had 11 different directors across 13 episodes.
tw s2 had 2 different directors across 12 episodes.
like... that just seems like too many points of view to be trying to use to tell a story. and i’m not saying you can’t have guest directors (like when your celeb friends need a hook up or a cast member has been shadowing or w/e) but it seems insane to me that you would willingly decide to have almost as many directors as episodes. how could anything possibly feel cohesive at the end of the season? how can the show feel like it has a signature or a unifying aesthetic? they couldn’t even manage to wrangle a written story into some sort of logical narrative in s2 with all 14 different writers. how were they going to then turn that mess into a cohesive visual story when they had 11 different people putting their individual spins on it?
not to mention the fact that crucial material (like communication and meaningful character development) was constantly cut in order to fit the episodes into their allotted time already means that we don’t get a lot of scenes designed purely for the aesthetic. we don’t get lingering shots of characters. we didn’t get a closeup of alex touching michael’s arm or hesitating and not touching michael’s arm after caulfield exploded. that was certainly A Choice by the director and i’m certainly still mad about it. it used to be very easy to make faceless teen wolf gif sets. i started making my faceless malex set after 1x05 and i couldn’t finish it until after the rest of the season had aired. and it’s only six gifs. and maybe that says more about my gif making skills (which lol fair) but still i feel like i might be onto something.
it’s subjective and i’m sure different for each viewer, but i personally have found it very difficult to connect with rnm on a cinematographic level and i really just wonder if it’s because each episode is like a little hour long mini-movie with nothing to visually connect it to other episodes beyond physical sets and the actual actors. but like GOD please don’t ever think that i’m holding up mtv’s motherfucking teen wolf as a paradigm of quality television programming. i’m just saying that sometimes the sweeping shots of the hale house made me want to cry and i don’t know that i’ve ever felt that invested in HOW rnm was showing me things outside of what was done with malex’s morning after in 1x03.
also, as an interesting side note, one of the rnm directors (tim andrew of 1x02, 1x06, and 1x13) directed 3 episodes of tws1 and 7 episodes of tws2. so like... i’ve seen tim’s shit before and he does fine. i vibed with tws2 aesthetically. my man tim directed “abomination.” he directed the pool scene. the motherfucking pool scene. i know how to vibe with tim. timmy’s not the problem for me.

Hook/CS Fan in response to me on Reddit that CS ruined this show: As I recall the writers gave plenty of support to CS, even before Nealfire died. You can’t blame one ship for everything that the characters end up doing later.
Me: I do think that a big part of it was A&E and these writers sheer lazy inability in coming up with any sort of new organic character development after two-and-a-half seasons (the Neverland arc), and their total inability to stick to their own rules of magic in favor of their contrived magical prophecies, macguffins, and twists. Recycled arcs (Aesop’s Amnesia) via cheaply shocking, forced, nonsensical, and/or wildly ooc derailment to achieve re-railment through bizarre contrivances and plot twists became a major problem in the writing for every remaining main character that lasted on this show past season three ish. It was not just a problem in the writing with Rumple and Belle post S3 ish, but Emma, Regina, Snow, David, Henry, and even and even Hook, Kitsowitz and these writers favorite, as well. They clearly ran out of story to tell after the Neverland arc, and they didn’t know where else to go from there after they achieved the ultimate endgame arcs they always intended for these main characters to have in a relatively consistent, dynamic, and relatable way from S1-3A. Instead of letting the story unfold in a way that incorporated compelling, organic, and relatable growth from there, they kept trying to retread the stories they had already told for Emma, Regina, Rumple, Belle, Snow, David, Henry, and even Hook throughout 3B-S7 over and over and over again in increasingly contrived, repetitive, and ridiculous ways.
However, I also feel a lot of the injustice done to Nealfire, Rumple, Belle, Rumbelle, Emma, and even Hook himself from 3B-S7 had to do with the writers wanting to prop up Hook onto a pedestal since they were too lazy to actually develop him into a better person, who was genuinely worthy of redemption.
You just cannot convince me that there was any other reason why Nealfire “had” to die than the fact that the writers “needed” for Hook to be in the place of Emma’s main love interest and Rumple’s son in the narrative because the writers were too lazy to develop/redeem Hook organically as an individual character without demonizing Rumple and/or getting rid of Swanfire competition.
If they were good writers then they could have found a way to easily keep Bae alive, while also having CS at the same time. Rumple could either RIP on the show after his well-earned redemption in 3x11, and/or Rumple could have had more time with his son and Belle, while also struggling with this whole “love versus power” thing in a more consistent, in-character, organic, and sympathetic manner from 3B-S6, rather than having him die selflessly to save everyone in the 3A finale.
You just cannot convince me that they suddenly started framing Rumple as a wildly OOC bizarre cartoon mustache twirler villain, who supposedly wanted power for its own sake “because it’s who he was” and “world domination” when he was sitting besides Hook the whole time in 4A, and his big schemes with magic had always been framed as family oriented and sympathetic beforehand, even if they were selfish and shortsighted.
Rumple had just gone through a horrific ordeal with Zelena, and he’d just lost the son he spent three centuries searching for, and A&E the writers pretended it never happened because it didn’t matter to them as writers since it got in the way of how terrible Rumple “had” to be made to look to make Hook look better.
Even more than that, the entire remaining main cast, including Belle his true love, just suddenly began to get away with treating Rumple as less than a human being, but a monster who was unworthy of compassion, emotional support, empathy, mercy, and understanding, even when he reached out for it from S4-S6 now when David used to be buddies with him, and Belle used to tell him that he could tell her anything back in S2.
From S4-S6, no one cared when he reached our for understanding and emotional support about his fears on Once Upon A Hook, including Belle, who was suddenly such a “hero” for needlessly making a choice to recklessly endangering her true love’s life by banishing her crippled husband with nothing for what was supposed to be forever to make Hook look better when just in the episode before of “Family Business” the narrative had made it clear that it was morally wrong for Belle or anyone else on this show to use the dagger on Rumple when it was used in a needlessly cruel, controlling, reckless, and hurtful manner. So why was it suddenly “okay” now for Belle to get deemed as “heroic” and “strong” for needlessly making a choice to recklessly endanger Rumple’s life by forcibly banishing him from his home with nothing when he could have, and almost did, die out there because she left him without any means to protect himself? Why?
Belle forcibly banishing Rumple from his home with nothing was not heroic and strong of her to put Rumple through because she was angry he deceived her. It was a needlessly cruel act that would technically qualify as an act of domestic violence via reckless endangerment of his life by forcibly throwing him out of his home with nothing in real life. She could have even gotten charged with manslaughter via reckless endangerment of his life/abandonment, if Rumple had actually died out in New York because she left him with nothing in real life. So yeah, it was wildly ooc and incredibly fucked up for Belle to banish Rumple with nothing like that. Sure, Rumple deserved to be dumped by Belle for being a shady shit behind her back, and not letting her in on what he was planning to do by taking her and Henry from SB, only to leave behind the rest of the town under a curse cast by Ingrid that made everyone else see the worst in each other. I was expecting and even hoping Belle would dump Rumple for awhile after he deceived her like that, even if Rumple was my favorite character, and Rumbelle was my favorite ship. But to recklessly endanger Rumple’s life by forcibly banishing him with nothing, and then to get written off as “heroic” and “strong” for it in the narrative? Completely fucked up and wrong.
And why was it suddenly “okay” to for the other characters to mistreat Rumple from the end of 4A onwards, including Belle? Was it because Hook became Rumple’s victim in 4A after getting away with being a douche, so suddenly treating Rumple with this bizarre and unfair set of moral double standards was “okay” now.
Hook was literally being no better in this situation than Rumple in 4A when he was the one who needlessly blackmailed Rumple to give him his hand back by threatening to tell Belle about the dagger when a true friend would have just told Belle the truth either way about her newly wed husband being a shady little shit.
You cannot ever convince me that Rumple would disguise himself as Hook to get the dagger from Belle, and that Belle would give it to him, just like that, as if it was no big deal that she could have sold out her true love and her own safety to one of Rumple’s worst enemies.
You cannot ever convince me that Belle would just stand there passively while her “friends” insensitively talked about killing Rumple in 4B instead of defending her true love.
You cannot convince me that Belle would just stay on Hook’s ship when she was fully convinced that it would hurt Rumple if he found out the truth about Hook letting her stay on his ship, sit there and trash talk about him like it was no big deal because of a dream, and refuse to hear him out when he initially tried to reason with her gently when she was in danger from Hyde by verbally bitchslapping him with needlessly bitchy, cruel, and spiteful belittlements about how she and their child didn’t need his protection because she had her “friends” protection because of what a dream said. She basically was acting like his say didn’t matter in their child’s life, so he could fuck off, even before he started losing it. Rumple overreacted with the ship spell, Belle had every right to be wary of him after that in 6A, but she was not a needlessly cruel, petty, spiteful, or stupid bitch.
You cannot convince me that Belle would actually let it slide when Hook let it slip that it would be an “added benefit” for him to get back at Rumple. Belle has self-respect. This was not self-respect or strength. This was Belle deliberately enabling a douche who didn’t respect her or her loved ones, and being a petty bitch to Rumple. Belle is neither of those things when she is in character.
Rumple had lied to Belle in 4A, which was awful, but you cannot convince me that he would ever so much as threaten to recklessly harm her in a needless panic over a dream zygote for a pair of scissors he plotted to use that he’d never been seen using before on the show in the past FTL flashbacks before without looking for any concrete evidence first, doing research, and asking obvious questions about how bizarre and stupid his whole thing was with the baby before losing his shit over it. This was even more ridiculously ooc and stupid than that dumb hat plot he had back in 4A, and at the very least then there was legitimate concrete evidence in flashbacks that he had used it before, and so it was easy to believe he knew what he was doing with it. At least, it made some sense that he wouldn’t want to be controlled again after the fact that Zelena controlled and imprisoned him with the dagger for a year, though the framing of his motives came off as very bizarrely and uncharacteristically cartoonishly evil and unsympathetic.
In 6A, he just decided, “I’m going to take these random scissors from the EQ to brainwash my son to love me to save my family, even though I’ve legitimately never been shown using them before in the past, and this is probably the most bizarre and stupid idea the writers ever forced me to have for the PLOT with magic to cartoon vilify me?”
You cannot convince me Rumple would ever say shit to Belle like “Call it what you will, but everything I do, I do out of love for you” in response to her getting angry over him putting that bracelet to trap her to keep her from attempting to run away their unborn baby in 6x08.
Rumple seemed just fine in the UW after taking back the curse a few weeks ago in the timeline, he had never so much as considered harming Belle even when his heart was almost pitch black and we were supposed to believe this was literally the same dude who wept over her calling him a “Pathetic dog, begging for scraps” in 4B when Regina pulled out her heart to get leverage over him.
Rumple had never tried to use magic to “make someone love them.”
His entire thing was that “All magic comes with a price, but love is free.” He had never been cold or scary to Belle in their present day relationship, and even back in the Dark Castle, it had been increasingly obvious that it was a playful joke the more he fell in love with her, but now they were suddenly framing him as a wildly OOC cold, controlling, restrictive, reckless, threatening, and borderline manipulative deranged jackass? This was literally the entire opposite of five previous seasons and three episodes of established characterization for Rumple, and it was obvious A&E and the writers were deliberately tainting the one last consistently credible sympathetic thing about his characterization in the narrative that they hadn’t ruined yet from S4-S6 with the purity of his true love for Belle from 6x04-6x09 to make Hook/CS look better after 5A.
And I do get that Rumple’s biggest flaw is that he believes he’s unworthy of love, but the writers had flanderdized it to ridiculous lengths now that made him seemingly oblivious to all common sense and obvious solutions to bizarre magical shit and problems when he was supposed to be a mad genuis. Now, he was just acting like a deranged and reckless idiot in 6A.
Yet wasn’t it convenient that they were having Rumple suddenly go off the rails in 6A after how far they had taken CS in 5A the season before, and now Hook was the “good guy” in a “healthy” place with Emma a season later, in spite of still being a douche himself and getting away with it?
And Emma...Don’t get me started on Emma...She started out being a badass, compassionate, selfless, and empathetic heroic young woman who stuck up for the underdog, helped people out, even if she didn’t trust them, and put Henry and her family before everyone and everything else in her life...By the end of 5A, however, she was selfish, petty, and only interested in Hook.
In short, I don’t think that CS was the entire downfall of this show. However, I do think it was a part of it, especially in regards to the character assassinations for Rumple, Belle, Emma, and even Hook himself from 3B-S6 (and even S7), and Nealfire’s death.

To myself, the only person reading this. (says me tagging it and running the possibility of someone stumbling upon this)
i haven’t even watched past like s6 of the flash💀 I’ve watched all of s1,s2,s3 just over accumulation i suppose, I’m confident I’ve seen all the episodes or at least Caitlin scenes (I skim a lot). I’ve watched all of s4 when it was releasing bc I was really really into the show at the time (by that I mean Caitlin). Year later tired to watch s5 but got bored like 6 episodes in. Which just ushered in my legends of tomorrow obsessio/ Nora darhk. I stopped keeping up w legends after Nora and ray left (I think early s5?) I just left the cw shows for good for bit. Then in winter of 7th grade year I remembered the flash existed and watched some episodes and fell back into brainrot (comparatively nothing to what would come). i was pretty into frost as a character and watched a lot of the s6 episodes just for her. Time skip to summer 2020. I think I was rewatching some Caitlin scenes and it just went worse from there. Like this was a full on obsession. All my friends knew, I read so much fanfic, had google docs ranting about her, making playlists and explaining said playlists. When s7 had come out I really tired to watch but I just couldn’t it was awful 😭. My brain chilled for awhile (as I got into genshin more and more and tryharded that (started on venti rerun banner, ar 56 (close to 57), 509 achievement, I’ve 36 stared abyss, 100% exploration in like 7 ish regions?)) okay back to the main point, as the Genshin honeymoon weared off, my brain went back to the only thing I know. Caitlin snow. I don’t bother with the new seasons and frost tbh (I find Caitlin to be engaging and interesting to me). My internet goes through phases but when it comes my brain fixates on her so much. I’m currently in a very deep rabbit hole, I’ve made edits, I’m researching cognitive functions to maybe?? Write an explanation on her istj typing (I got it from personality database but I really want to justify the answer for mysel) I’ve done some fanart but i hate parts so lol. I’m used to drawing in a relatively “anime” style so it’s a little difficult adjusting to more semi realism. Uh anyways Caitlin is unironically one of my tops characters I relate, my favorite character of all, my comfort character, I project my issues onto her too. Also she would listen to mitski (I associate I bet on losing dogs w the whole thing w jay, geyser w her and Ronnie) I have some more but I can’t think of them rn. Also she’s bi, this is not projection I am simply correct. Lisa x Caitlin solos ur faves . Goodnight I have school tomorrow .

Hi I enjoyed ur narcissist personality for LL meta and I thought it made a lot of sense. One thing that's always baffled me with arrow was the "friendship" I was expected to buy bet LL/FS. It was an inherited connection from SL. a scene in 4:04 when thea made a comment about F not wearing something, the moment passes and then later on LL asks what thea meant ,it was on her mind. I want to pick ur brain and ask ur opinion on this friendship as well as their interactions throughout the seasons.
Why thank you! :) I’m glad you enjoyed it. In terms of the Laurel character there are exactly two ways to view her: as she is (as she was written, even if such an interpretation of dislike was not intended by the writers) OR as she could’ve/should’ve been!
The fanfic story, “The Ways of the Universe” by CyberQueens is really good at writing Laurel as the writers should’ve written her (it’s also an Olicity story with a nice Laurel that I truly enjoy). Cyber Queen’s other fanfic “To Be a Bird of Prey” is really good about writing a more positive, less selfish Laurel. Check both stories out!
But, those stories are how the writers of the show SHOULD’VE written Laurel - as a positive, supportive, guest, female character. In terms of how Laurel really is in terms of how the show creators really made her seem (the Narcissist Laurel) is really well explored in BookofLife’s fanfics, “What Wouldn’t I Do” AND “Indecent Proposal.” Both these stories are really good at addressing Laurel’s delusions of who she is as a character as well as her delusions surrounding her history & past relationship with Ollie.
It was BookofLife’s fanfics that really inspired me to write my “Laurel Narcissist” meta. B/c it shows LL as she was created by the writers but it blatantly addresses her issues (& what makes her such a horrible character) instead of ignoring those issues & never having LL face any consequneces like the show did!!!
As for the friendship between Felicity/Laurel, or really, Laurel with any of Team Arrow characters, always rang false to me. B/c we never really saw it develop naturally. One minute LL was a wild card, often a threat to Team Arrow in terms of how they did things, the next thing we know, characters like Felicity & Digg are all about “Support Team Laurel.” The writers KNEW LL was disliked by the majority of the fans so they tried to appeal to them by connecting LL positively with the shows most loved characters, IE: Thea, Felicity & Digg!
Essentially, Thea, Felicity, & Digg were all used as props to help build LL up as a character, which made their relationships with LL feel false & in a way manipulative. After all, LL roped in Felicity to help her lie to Lance about Sara’s death; there were quite a few times when LL turned to Felicity for tech-help which made LL seem presumptuous b/c in the past LL had treated Felicity/Digg like “the help.”
The writers wanted to appeal to the audience to like LL more by connecting her to more well-liked characters. That’s all. There was no REAL relationship between LL or any other character. They did the same thing with LL in S1 when it was clear that she wasn’t liked by most of the audience (she was too cold, too harsh, too bitter, & too judgmental) - so they connected her to Tommy (who, to this day is still a fav. of the show)!
KC often played up her heart-eyes in any scenes she had with Amell/Ollie, which was always funny & weird cause Amell always looked so awkward (ever notice how he almost never looks Laurel in the eye in their scenes together, he’s always looking over her shoulder or off to the side most of the time). Amell, openly admitted that he couldn’t take Lauriver scenes seriously & that working with KC was always “awkward.”
Your comment, “It was an inherited connection from SL.” First, I’m assuming you’re referring to Sara Lance? If so, then yes, you’re spot on, on that! That’s b/c Laurel’s character pretty much took over Sara’s role on the show. Sara was the perfect Canary (or if you’re me, she will always be my true Black Canary). She had the training, the tragic arc & back story, a great love (Nyssa) & a purpose (she fought for women). But Laurel has the comic book name, which apparently makes her special, so Sara HAS to die & LL takes her place. The problem is LL does not have the proper training (& the training she does have is not enough nor is it believable in any way shape or form; in fact KC’s double almost always did the fight scenes b/c KC never has the physicality to do them like Amell or Lotz, both of whom almost always do their own stunts & fight scenes).
Laurel’s backstory/history I often found paralleled that of say Slade Wilson or Malcolm Merlyn...
Think about it!
Slade, Malcolm, & LL - ALL lost tragic love!
Slade lost Shado!
Malcolm lost is wife!
LL lost Tommy, later Sara, & as we learn in 4x19 her drug/alcohol addiction was really caused by Ollie leaving again - he actually felt shame for how Lauriver treated Tommy so he ran into exile - & she was NOT in fact upset over Tommy!
Laurel is embittered, harsh, wants revenge! Slade wanted to hurt Oliver & everyone Oliver loves b/c of Shado’s death! Malcolm wanted to destroy the Glades b/c of his wife’s murder! In S2 LL wants revenge against the Hood for Tommy’s death (even though Tommy died saving HER life & the Hood had literally nothing to do with Tommy’s death). In S3 LL wants revenge for Sara’s death (she’s also very bitter & angry w Oliver throughout S3)!
Are you seeing the parallels?
Seriously, every time LL lost someone or things didn’t go her way, she would get angry, do her own thing even if it was stupid & put her & others in jeopardy, she’d lash out, go on this whole revenge kick, etc. Which is exactly how Slade & Malcolm acted as villains!
Laurel was written like a villain, but the show promoted her like hero. The complete contradiction of how the show wrote LL (villain-like) & how we were expected to see her (as some paragon of good) was what made Laurel’s character so fucking inconsistent!
This was why I think LL would’ve actually benefited from being turned into a villain, but as Black Siren has proved, she’s not even compelling as a bad guy (especially in comparison to the Adrian Chase who’s freaking awesome as a villain). If anything BS is villain-light.
Throughout S4 KC/LL would essentially stand to the side, in the background, with her arms crossed & an angry look on her face. That’s it. She wasn’t even brought into the Team, she had to push her way on it! Oliver willingly brought Digg & Felicity onto the Team, it was HIS choice (he’d done research on them & figured they could help him the most, what with Digg’s history as a soldier & Felicity’s capabilities with tech). Oliver also brought Sara onto the Team (b/c he got into a relationship with her, though later Felicity & Digg accept her onto the Team). Oliver only brought Roy onto the Team cause he didn’t know how else to help Roy control the Marikuru. Oliver only told Thea he was the Arrow b/c Malcolm threatened to, so Oliver told her before Malcolm could! Thea didn’t officially join the Team until Oliver was presumed dead & Thea was essentially invited onto the Team by Felicity, Roy, & Digg. Even the new recruits in S5 were brought in by Felicity after Oliver agreed to it! Laurel was the only one who wasn’t invited onto Team Arrow. She basically showed up & that was that. Which was probably why it felt like she never really earned her place on the Team or as Black Canary. Lack of training, lack of Team Work (she often went off & did her own thing despite other Team Members asking her not to) - LL was never a Team player (she just wanted it to be her & Ollie). Essentially, the consistency of the plot would bend to the LL character b/c otherwise it made no sense why she was there other than the fact that it had to do with her being from the comics, & even then she’s nothing like the Black Canary from the comics!
