Tom was nervous to say the least, he was fiddling with his hands as he anxiously stared at the clouds by his window. He wasn’t sure if chasing after you to Cancun was the best course of action because, if he was being honest, he was scared you would reject him again, and this time he would lose you permanently. Regret washed over him as he remembered he was the reason there was a large void between the two of you. You and Tom had been best friends since diapers, but it soon developed into something more than friends during high school. Tom could vividly remember when he had kissed you for the first time. He was driving you home after your date had blown you off. His heart took control before his head could warn him as he stared into your beautiful eyes, so he kissed you. From then on, you and Tom lived in a happy relationship, but it was soon shattered to tiny pieces, along with your heart, when Tom broke it off with you, saying he couldn’t be tied down anymore since he had girl after girl chasing him and praising the ground he walked on.
You and Tom were sitting on the couch watching Tangled. His arm rested on your shoulders while your hand was on his stomach, and your head was laying on his chest. His leg was bouncing up and down like he was anxious and his heart was beating a thousand miles per hour.
“Hey, what’s wrong, baby?” You asked him softly, placing your hand on his thigh as you turned to look at him, a concerned expression on your face. He shook his head, standing up as if he had something to say.
“Tom?” You tilted your head, trying to read him.
“I wanna break up.” He said dryly.
You felt your heart stop, thinking this was a sick joke or the worst nightmare you could have ever envisioned.
“W-what?” You stuttered in disbelief.
“I-I wanna break up.” Tom repeated.
“Why?” You frowned. You had been together since you were sixteen. Why was he trying to break up now? He was always happy with you, or at least you thought so. Everyone had always told you that he was whipped for you because the look in his eyes gave it away whenever he looked at you. Guess everyone was wrong, including you.
“I just—well, I wanna see other people, you know? We’ve been together since high school, we haven’t seen anyone else, so I just wanna try new things. And you know there’s plenty of girls hitting on me, so I just wanna try it.” He spoke honestly, waiting for your reaction.
You didn’t know what to feel. On one side you felt pissed because he was breaking up a five year long relationship because he wanted to sleep around with other girls? What an asshole. And on the other hand, you felt your heart break into tiny pieces because he was breaking up with you because he wanted to get laid with someone other than you? Were you not enough? Had you not satisfied him enough? You wanted to cry, but you had too much pride to let an asshole see that he was hurting you.
“Y/N, please, say something.” He pleaded.
“Well, what do you want me to say, Tom? ‘Hey, it’s cool, go sleep around as much you’d like it’s not like it feels like my heart is being stabbed over and over again? Yeah, man, let other girls fuck you senseless so they can get you off the way I couldn’t.’” You responded sarcastically, voice breaking the more you spoke. You paused, staring at the white walls blankly. “Did you cheat on me?” You asked, eyes narrowing, anger lacing your voice.
Tom shook his head frantically. “No! I would never I just—“ you shook your head, holding your finger up, silently telling him to stop talking.
As you began to gather your things to leave and never come back, Tom wrapped his arms around your waist from behind as you let out a frustrated sigh, feeling the pain become increasingly overwhelming. He buried his face in your neck, breathing in your lemon scent for what would most likely be the last time.
“Baby, come on, I still love you.” Tom spoke softly, brushing a strand of hair out of your face.
“Just not enough to stay.” You snapped, wiping the tears that had managed to escape off your eyes before shoving him away from you.
“I’ll always come back to you, okay? I want to marry you and grow old with you. I just wanna try other things.”
“So, I’m just supposed to wait around for you alone while someone else lays in your bed?” Tom stayed quiet, tears clouding his vision. You scoffed, completely livid. “Unbelievable.” You muttered. You always took care of him, loved him, supported him and he couldn’t even love you properly? Coward. You knew better than to stay or wait around for someone like him because you were smart. You knew better.
“You know what, Thomas?” Oh, shit. It was at this moment Tom knew, he fucked up. “I don’t care. Do whatever you fuckin’ please, but just know that you could get laid as many times as you would like, you could have all the hoes in the world at your feet, but none of them are going to know you like I do, none of them are going to please you like I do. No one--I promise you--no one is going to love you like I do, ‘cause ain’t nobody like me, boy. You would know that if you knew better, but you don’t know shit, so I’ll do better.” You sneered at the boy in front of you, throwing your engagement ring at him.
With that, you left Tom to stand alone and frozen, feeling his heart stop before slowly and painfully sinking to the bottom of his stomach. He knew that he would regret his actions later by the way his heart was aching. The pain was suffocating him, so he did what he had wanted to do, the reason he lost you. He drank his sorrows away before starting a new life of pleasure and hidden heartache.
Tom winced as the painful memory replayed in his mind. God, he was so stupid. He had forgotten your words, and one day he had enough of his lifestyle, so he ran back to you, only to have his heart broken when you told him someone else was now your forever, you were enganged to a man that wasn’t him, Darien. He felt his blood boil at the thought of the bastard. Seeing Darien belittle and torment you made his stomach bubble with anger. So, Tom made it his job to interfere in your relationship with Darien whenever he could. Stealing you from his arms during slow dances at his lavish parties and your wedding rehersal, sitting next to you, interrupting your conversations; he loved watching the entitiled asshole hold his tongue to stop himself from yelling and embarrassing his family in front of the high class society you were forced to live in was the highlight of Tom’s day. You would roll your eyes or scoff, but Tom could see the relief in your eyes, your body language was also a dead giveaway that you were glad someone had stepped in before your fiancé became too much for you to handle all by yourself. Tom would grin as he wrapped an arm around your waist, leaving Darien behind all alone.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Tom dug around his pocket, looking for the ring you gave back to him all those years ago. You hadn’t talked to him during the time you spent apart, and everytime he tried to reach out, he was left on read, that is until you blocked him on every platform you could think of. Missing you was the worst punishment he could have ever gone through, but he knew he deserved it. When you walked out the door to your old apartment, he was left with nothing but pictures to remember you, until he found the ring once again after a night of drinking his pain away. He had it turned into a necklace, he wanted to keep it until he was able to win you back so you could marry him and grow old with him. Tom placed the silver chain around his neck, feeling a wave of nostalgia and sadness take over him. There were too many emotions swirling throughout him, and he wasn’t sure he would be able to take them on for much longer. If he couldn’t convince you to love him again, even after he broke your heart, then he would lose you forever, his hopes and dreams would be shattered to live the rest of his life miserable. He was exhausted so he let his head rest by the plane’s window before falling into a deep slumber.
A/N: pretty pls, tell me what you think, pls bc I’m so skeptical about this fic I need reassurance, y’all. I love y’all😊
