tryin to show a non player (not yet) friend (hiiiii who? the girl reading this) the mech of a dungeon that i ate so badly embarassingly earlier, going back in, and suddenly the knwoledge of them makes them easier and my failure isnt as impressively cringe. whats the point.

i really like how much depth your art has, do you think you could show how you break down bodies when sketching if that makes sense? it’s something i struggle with a lot in my art! 。゚(゚´ω`゚)゚。
ok apologies in advance, this is probably going to be a really long and tangential rant about art that may or may not actually help you in learning how to construct bodies. im just gonna put it under a cut to save everyone from seeing this huge text wall.
i dont think its gonna be possible for you to replicate my methods here, because theyre mostly just really specific shortcuts for finding certain proportions and reference points for anatomy, which i'm fairly versed in, but not as much as i'd like to be. the shortcuts you'll need will be different from mine. im glad you think my art has depth, that is something i am trying to seek very intentionally right now, and i dont think im even close to the depth of form i am actually aiming for. so like. this makes making a tutorial kind of inherently hard. nevertheless, i threw this quick sketch together after like 3 failed attempts. (i was doing those attempts digitally, ended up giving up on that and going back to traditional because its what im most comfortable with rn)
Tumblr media
i didnt get all the steps i took to get here because scanning that much would be cumbersome but ill try to explain how i got here. i start with the head almost every time.
Tumblr media
i use a lot of symbolic/graphic shapes when drawing heads and dont stick to using forms very often besides the circle at the center of the head, which i use as the base to form these graphic shapes around. think of it like "wrapping" the ball in various textures and masses. the eyes are usually "textured" onto the head, notice how the her left eye looks narrower then her right. of course i try to make sure her bangs sit along the curve of the sphere and her ears look like they sit on opposite sides of the head. its easy to forget that part, making the head look unsymmetrical. the particular masses of leica's head would be her snout, which is just a curve extended slightly outside the diameter of the ball, and her hair, which are two strange organic shapes that are quite hard to draw, two hair sprig anime antennae things (forgive me, i forgot the word for them,) and the back of the head, which i usually need to extend slightly. its a little too extended here, needs more on the top, i fix this in the final pass. this was a quick sketch, so i didnt focus too hard on the forms of the head beyond the most essential ones for her design, but i sometimes highlight the form of cheeks with curved hatching, or try to make the eyes appear more sunken-in as they are on human faces. i dont know how to proportion the neck and torso correctly until i draw the head, so i always do it first. next, i did the torso.
Tumblr media
so heres why i said that you probably wont be able to replicate this approach. you do kind of just have to practice anatomy, i cant just make it make sense because im not very good at explaining this stuff, but ill try to go through what i did here. so, i generally use simplified bone shapes to find proportions and reference points, as well as more complicated shapes like those of elbows and knees. i try to study fairly often because im not satisfied with here im at with this stuff yet. of course, i dont think i'll ever be. so i'll usually start with the ribcage, add a shoulderblade out the back to find the shoulder, the armbones come out of that, the bone in the upper arm connects to the ulna with a sort of three-pronged attachment, one big knurl in the middle, which forms the thrust of the elbow, two little ones on the side. i think those are part of the ulna but i dont remember. see, you dont really have to know what exactly they do as long as you know what they look like. the ulna does some goofy rotation shit i dont understand, connects to the wrist, and then we have a hand, which, i mean, im not good enough at hands to even be telling you how to do it, but i just have a big squarish mass and some little hotdog fingers coming out of that. you can see on her left hand that ill have a big circle forming the the area on the hand where the thumb attaches... theres more depth to the hands, i think you can easily find better tutorials then i could offer. anyway, under the ribcage theres the pelvis, represented with a box. ill get into that when i talk about the legs. i wanna briefly talk about the way i add the flesh and fat to the bones.
so, i really can't give a comprehensive crash course on anatomy, but i can point you towards the morpho series, which is where i get most of this stuff from. you can get very far with the volumes Simplified Forms, Fat and Skin, and Skeleton and Bone Reference Points. moving on, i just kind of have a feel for where the masses attach by now. the important thing to remember when drawing fat characters like this is that the fat should "hang" from the bones and flesh, drooping down slightly. leicas fat hangs substantially, so she's not very wide despite her weight. this is important to her character design i feel. i almost always draw characters naked first when doing serious drawings because it will come in handy knowing where the forms of the body are when i add the clothing. by focusing on the way her body looks naked, i can modify the impression of those forms when adding clothes, and when i add them later on in this drawing, leica will take on the distinctive boxy look i try to draw her with.
if you look at the arm, youll see that the place the line of bone sits is very high compared to the whole mass of the arm, the flesh and fat of the arm "hang" from the bone, and then the upper arm squishes against the bent forearm too. even if the anatomy in the arm is indistinct, it can still look convincing when the forms act realistically against one another. the elbow has much less fat connected to it, so its more bony then the rest. this isnt actually consistent on all people so like, think about that kind of thing when designing characters, like i was talking about before, fat can sit in infinite different ways. maybe if i was doing a more objective anatomy lesson i'd draw cath, because i do have a sort of vague understanding of muscle placement that doesnt come through here, but probably would if i was drawing a scrawnier character. let me know if you want that.
a word on the breasts too: they hang a bit lower then you'd expect, keep that in mind. the attachment point is also angled, as the line shows. the line starts roughly in the middle of the torso and ends around the armpit, but the form of the breast can go underneath the armpit or even connect around the fold of fat in the back. many things to think about. i love boob shapes. ok lets finally get on with it and talk about the legs.
Tumblr media
so, the really specific shape of the pelvis doesnt matter that much unless youre drawing a really thin character, so its just a box here. out from the sides of the pelvis, extending out more then you'd expect, is the femur, which ends in a similar joint to the arm. this shape helps me figure out the form of the knee. two masses on each side with a bunch of complex and weirdly shaped bones forming the kneecap, which i have omitted because i dont yet know shit enough to include them. i am learning though. so, obviously the feet are just scribbles here because im just gonna put her feet in socks anyway. you really dont have to do more then you have to. a few tips i can offer here, the butt should hang a bit too when drawing fat characters, i think the butt is supposed to start just below the pelvis if i remember, but take that with a grain of salt. i also didnt really do that here but its hard to tell because she's facing mostly forward. again, i dont think i can really communicate what's going on here. morpho has a lot of great drawings explaining the shapes and muscles of the legs, all things i might focus on more when drawing a scrawnier character. for this case, i regrettably don't go too hard on the legs. also i should note that legs would usually be much longer, leica is really short so ive exaggerated the proportions to communicate that. i may change my mind on that front in the future and give her more grounded proportions. the important thing to remember with legs is just getting a nice hierarchy of forms going. bigger thigh going into smaller calf going into smaller foot. it mostly comes automatically now.
Tumblr media
i added the clothing, shaped up her head a bit, added a bit of fur. i put her in her classic outfit, just a sweater and jeans. i enjoy the big thick folds that come out of these clothes, and big areas of white space too. its nice. i try my best to form all the folds around the forms of the body i drew earlier. thats one case where i really really have no idea what im doing and could never explain it in words. its just some fun intuitive play with loops and lines. this is at around the stage for a sketch where i'd do inks, or if it was going to be a finished pencil drawing i'd erase out parts piece by piece and replace them with nicer and more defined lines and tones.
i guess that's all i can offer , i hope that halped.

GHIAB Scene: A New Friend
I forgot to add this scene into Chapter 49 of GHIAB, but it has been added in now!
Meanwhile, Marionette and Charlie had already made it into the daycare. Though awfully tempted to just take the shortcut down the slide, they decided to knock and be let in by Sunny proper. It seemed like the sort of thing Sunny would appreciate. Charlie had also radioed Jake when she had come in- then explained to Fritz that she was, in fact, not talking to him- and now she and Marionette were approaching the wooden doors.
One of the doors was sitting wide open, which was odd, but they assumed it was for them. What was much stranger was that there was no sign of Sunny himself.
“Sunny?” Marionette called. He drifted a little further in while looking around at the structures and over at the balcony. He expected to catch a glimpse of yellow but did not.
“He’s probably still up with Jake,” Charlie suggested. Not noticing something slowly creeping out from behind the door and up behind her. Instead noticing something on the nearby counter. “Are those his shoes?”
Something suddenly grabbed around her waist and hoisted her up. She gave a startled ring only to recognize the long, yellow glowing arms around her waist and the sound of ticking and rotating pieces against her back.
“SURPRISE! Welcome back, New Friend!” Sunny greeted excitedly.
He hugged her like one would a teddy bear, swinging her lightly in his arms before giving a small spin- his upper half only. It wasn’t fast enough to be disorienting and he finished by letting her back down. Releasing her to clasp his hands together excitedly. He had removed the bells from his wrists as well, explaining his lack of jingling.
“I didn’t expect you back so soon! Did you come to check up on little old me?” Sunny asked with a tilt of his head and roll of his points.
“That’s half of it. But first: who are you and where is the real Sunny?” Charlie joked.
“Oh, it’s still me! I just thought that maaaybe we could start all over again!” he asked. He twiddled his thumbs together. “I haven’t forgotten last night, nope! No more slip-slipping back into old ways! At least, not with you, Jingle Bell. Can I call you that? That just came out, I won’t call you that if you don’t want me to. Nicknames aren’t required! Err, but I must insist you use mine for obvious reasons.”
“I don’t mind it at all, Sunny,” Charlie said with a smile. “And I think I would like that.”
“Then follow my lead,” Sunny instructed. He straightened up with his legs together, bowed forward, and offered her his hand. “My name’s Sunny Dee! What’s your name?”
“My name’s Charlie. It’s nice to meet you, Sunny,” she played along. She took his hand and shook it, sealing their agreement.
Then Marionette came up and offered his hand and Sunny only processed it for a second before going ahead and taking his as well. Another agreement to start over, one that needed less introduction or explanation. At least, for now.
“I’m that mime thing from the Prize Corner. How do you do?” Marionette introduced.
“I do very good, thank you!” Sunny chirped with another dip of his points. “I’m that thing they let around children!”
Marionette chimed as he shook his hand. Once they separated, Sunny made his way to the counter where he pinched his bells and ribbons and pulled them out of his shoes.
“Now then, what really brings you back to my daycare?”

running mm red reaper with the guild friends like “let’s do something chill tonight” “with this group it should be a breeze” only for complete ✨nonsense✨ to happen
group comp to paint the full picture: me on my shadow tank, @janankarrus on her TK sage, @consulaaris on her sab slinger, and @visionmarred on their commando heals. most of us have only been running ops the last few months, hardly any fps outside of vet queues for double xp.
and the chaos that ensued:
my brilliant plan to try to leap back into shadow tanking for the first time in months without setting my keybinds
ofc that also meant my threat rotation was off kilter and the sage and slinger hot potatoed aggro through most of the trash and the leaping sith boss
gigi’s sage accidentally hurling a rock at the droid boss before ready check because autotarget wanted to come for our entire lives
1 of us apparently never ran reaper in mm before and 2 of us forgot that mechanics on the pillars were actually a thing, so naturally as the sage ripped aggro from my sad shadow tanking attempt, the droid said beam time of death let’s gooooo
the sab roll effect aggroing neutral droid enemies in the frozen sith room
rae’s slinger getting left behind with a mob of enemies as my cc wore off because I’d moved onto the next one
somehow we managed to sneak through the archaeology bridge shortcut with the power of my double sleep tactical and our hubris grew too strong
ikoral got blasted by the dps so hard the fight glitched and spawned 4 zealots total that rooted my shadow in place for pretty much the entire fight, as my abuela called me on the phone to gossip about the family, while I desperately tried to hold onto my threat
poor sierra chasing us all down with their trooper’s ghostbuster cannon and trying so hard to keep us all alive
honk honk, hawk’s circus. at least we pulled through and rae’s slinger got her social title goal. :o)

III a. Method I: Loop, Sculpt, Cut
(Previous: III. Meshing a (vintage) dress)
As promised, today I'd like to show you one of my 2 favourite methods of meshing skirts in Blender. In case you forgot – it's been some time since the last part – this is where we left our dress:
Tumblr media
As you can see, the basic shape of the skirt is ready, but it looks rather like a stiff cone than something you'd wear. That's exactly what we're going to change.
Method I: Loop, Sculpt, Cut
Go to the front view (num 1).
Press t to unhide the left side bar (make sure your cursor is in the main window). Choose the first category ('Tools') and under 'Mesh Tools', in the 'Add' section, find 'Loop Cut and Slide'... Or just use the ctrl + r shortcut.
Tumblr media
Remember what you did when you were meshing that cup with Blender Guru? Now we're going to do exactly the same. There are two possibilities: either you put the loop in the right place from the start and then scale it to get the shape you want, or you first put it in the default place – in the middle – and then move that new loop. Whatever works better for you. For some reason, I prefer option no. 2, so that's what I'm going to do.
If you have any vertices selected, deselect them (a). Click that 'Loop Cut and Slide' button (or press ctrl + r) and place the cursor over your dress. You should see a pink, horizontal line.
Tumblr media
Double click to put it in that default place.
Move it along the z axis (g, z) to give your skirt the desired shape (turn off proportional editing (alt + o) in case you used it last time and it's still on!). Here's what I got:
Tumblr media
Obviously, the top part of the skirt still looks wrong. We need to repeat the same steps: deselect vertices (a), put another loop (ctrl + r) in the middle of the upper part and then move it (g, z) to the right place.
Tumblr media
Tip: If you want to see how your skirt looks, but you're not sure if you're done with adjustments and don't want to deselect the vertices just yet, just switch to Object Mode (tab). When you switch back to Edit Mode (tab), your vertices will still be selected.
If you think your dress still looks too blocky, repeat those same steps another time or two. I think I'll add one more loop at the top.
Tip: In case you need to readjust any of the loops, you can easily select them with right-click + alt. Add shift to the mixture to select several loops!
Look at your new skirt from different viewpoints and make any necessary adjustments. Chances are you'll have to move your new loops a little bit to the back (g, y) to get rid of that belly bump.
Tip: For small adjustments, either use your keyboard arrows or hold shift while moving your mouse.
Tumblr media
Once you're satisfied with the basic shape of your skirt, insert more loops between the ones you already have. Just put them there, without any adjusting. You can easily add many loops at once: just put one in the middle and then increase the number of cuts in that little box on the left-hand side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll be honest: I have no idea how many loops are necessary. I usually try to add enough so that the distance between them would be similar to the distance between loops in the top, but I might be overdoing it a bit.
Now that you've added them, you can move to the next step: sculpting.
Click the mode selection button – the one which shows whether you're in object or edit mode – and choose 'Sculpt Mode' from that short list.
Tumblr media
This is a completely different editing mode, which lets you, well, sculpt your mesh in any way you want. Bad news: I'll have to kind of leave you to your own devices in here. Instead of step-by-step instructions I can only give you a couple of tips.
I find it easier to sculpt if I change the shading from material/texture to solid. You might want to do the same.
Tumblr media
If you collapse the 'Stroke' menu on the left, you'll be able to choose the stroke method. I'd highly recommend you go for 'line' – makes sculpting bumps and creases a lot easier.
Note: If ‘line’ doesn’t appear in the dropdown menu, check if you’re using the correct Blender version, 2.79! It seems this feature is missing at least from version 2.70.
Tumblr media
At the very top of that sidebar you can choose a brush which you're going to use. Which one should you go for? That depends very much on what kind of effect you want to achieve. SculptDraw, Brush, Blob, Inflate – all of them work quite well for adding some volume (or removing, if you choose 'Subtract' instead of 'Add'). Crease is my absolute favourite for, well, adding creases – great if your skirt is supposed to be made of a thick material falling in folds (THIS is probably my top achievement in creasing). Experiment a bit on your own, with different brushes, radius and strength settings! Just remember to change the stroke method when you select a new brush – it's set to 'space' by default.
Tumblr media
Many strokes later...
Tumblr media
Once you're satisfied with the results of your sculpting, go back to edit mode.
Chances are high that now your mesh looks quite blocky here and there – having sharp edges rather than smooth material folds. We're going to fix that with the knife tool.
Turn off the x-ray and find a part of your skirt which could use some smoothing. In case of my skirt, I see a proper candidate right away:
Tumblr media
Look for a point where your crease/bump is ending (i.e. becoming flat). Select the knife tool (k), click on that 'starting' vertex and draw a diagonal line, creating a little triangle:
Tumblr media
Now draw a line going down, parallel to your crease/bump line:
Tumblr media
Repeat the same on the other side of your crease/bump:
Tumblr media
Now we need to do some rotating and moving. I've got it easy, as the part which I'm adjusting lies exactly on the x axis. I'll deselect the top vertices, move the rest along the x axis (g, x) and rotate it along y (r, y) – just a little bit! Much better:
Tumblr media
Tip: If you think that you started your cut too low and it looks weird, go to edge select mode, select both diagonal lines at the top of your cut, press x or delete and choose 'dissolve edges'. You'll be left only with the parallel lines; 'knife' them further up and end with a new triangle.
Tumblr media
Repeat for any other 'pointy' parts. If the part you're adjusting isn't located exactly on the x or y axis, you'll have to do some more rotating and moving, as you'll have to take both axes into account. It's basically a trial and error process – might take some time, but you'll eventually get there. Skipping the rotating part and only moving the whole cut a bit here and there is also an option.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's it. Your skirt is fully meshed. Congratulations!
But... It took some time and effort, didn't it? That's exactly what I was thinking too – and then, a month or two ago, I came up with an idea on how to simplify the whole skirt-making process. In my head I call it 'the sneaky method' ;). This post got already too long to include this one as well, but I'll share it with you next time!
(Next: III b. Method II: The sneaky way)

Weeks 1 & 2
With my installation of Maya 2022, I have been able to slowly understand the software with the help in our tutorial class discussions. Our class this week started out with using the poly modelling tab to create a ball that was going to give the imitation of a ‘bounce’. After creating my first sphere, I began to get used to moving the ball above the plane and noticing the scale, translation and rotate options. I have knowledge of the x and y translations, however the z axis for depth was new to me and I started to experiment with the sphere how that looks like. Then in our tutorial class, we started to learn what keyframes are - a tool to time each position of an object to perform an action. However, I had began to miss some steps such as when to set a key frame on the timeline, and that affected my end result to turn out not as smooth as the animation could’ve been. I set every two frames initially with keyframes and later learned I was supposed to set them further apart. I learnt how to make bounces however quite quickly using the translation options, and I used the graph editor as reference to check how the ball was moving.
Tumblr media
I was surprised to see that I didn’t have much height difference to create a realistic ball bounce, and I seemed to start and end in a strange way. The velocity and tangents weren’t refined or exact, however I was still learning how to use this software for the first time ever during the tutorial. I missed the steps to create hierarchies and seemed a bit lost with what to do, and to solve this issue I had rewatched the tutorial on blackboard to start fresh with another ball bounce. My first and unfinished attempt of a ball bounce is seen with this video:
Starting again, I realised I forgot to set a 24 X 24 plane and that was the first thing I had created. I placed my ball higher on the top left and followed carefully when to set each keyframe at my own pace and spaced them out more to become a lot more smoother. I followed the tutorial steps and noticed how the bounces were made, and once those were set I learnt about how to break uniform tangents to create sharp angles for a more realistic bounce. And successfully my graph editor looked much more on target.
Tumblr media
Finally, with my ball bounce completed, I moved onto creating a new project for hierarchies and applying a few of the 12 principles of animation. First I searched online how to find the ‘outliner’ panel and used it to see when groups are created as I had an issue with this at the start. Using the ‘edit’ dropdown panel I created 3 groups in a ‘hierarchy’ - the first being the sphere and rotation option, the second group for scale and the third for translation. For this project we were experimenting as a class the actions of a bouncing ball when hitting an object in impact. I started with the ball in a high position on the left and created a rectangle model to be put on the ground plane. We were shown to slightly put the rectangle on an angle so the ball would bounce off the edge of it. This is where the first principle of animation ‘squash and stretch’ is used in my project in maya. Firstly, we locked certain actions of each group to create a system where each group would have a role - such as the sphere using rotation and the second group for scale. After, we created keyframes to time actions, and when the sphere hit the edge of the rectangle we used the second group to scale the ball down into a flatter surface to create the ‘squash and stretch’ animation. After, we used the second principle of animation which was ‘Anticipation’ - when a character creates a first move to indicate the action they are going to take. For our project, we rotated the ball at the start of the sequence using the ‘D’ shortcut that I learnt in class. In the end it played out that the ball gave the illusion that it had been lifted and thrown to bounce down.

So Good But So Bad
We eat a lot of salads.  We fill our plates with vegetables and lean proteins.  We snack on fruit or yogurt.  But every now and then I make something that is guaranteed to put a cork in an artery and we remember just how delicious things like cheese and heavy cream can be.  Sometimes I rationalize and think of my grandparents who lived very long lives, within touching distance of 100, and they ate creamed vegetables and didn’t skimp on desserts.  Of course, they didn’t eat processed foods either, most meals came right from their own gardens and pastures.  I’m still traumatized from the first time I saw my sweet grandmother whack the head off a chicken.  Anywho...I’m rambling and just meant to say that we try to eat healthy most of the time, but every now and then a plate of comfort food hits the spot.  This is one of those meals.
I plucked this recipe from the Magnolia Table (volume 2) cookbook because I had most of the ingredients handy.  I’m so glad I did.  Mickey moans with pleasure when he eats this and I try to pretend that it’s healthy because it has peas in it.  I love that the recipe uses orecchiette.  If it’s weird to have a favorite pasta then call me weird, because I love orecchiette.  I think in Italian it means “little ears” because of the shape - but that shape allows it to cup whatever sauce it’s in so that every bite is perfectly balanced.  I use it when I make Ina Garten’s Bolognese sauce and it’s the ideal vehicle to deliver that spicy tomato goodness.  But this recipe is not a red sauce, it’s a cheesy, flavorful white sauce and it’s full of...bacon.  As it’s written in the cookbook it calls for pancetta or bacon.  I had bacon.  Isn’t pancetta fattier than bacon? If so, then I made this a diet meal, right?  I’ll put the recipe at the bottom of this post, but here’s what you do. I always gather and measure out all of my ingredients first, once that’s done this comes together so easily and you’ll have dinner on the table in no time.
Tumblr media
Dice up your bacon. This was three strips of thick cut bacon.
Tumblr media
Don’t judge my old cutting board.  I have nicer boards but this is my favorite. I forgot to include a couple of items in the group picture. The pasta...recipe calls for 16oz, I used this box and a handful from another.
Tumblr media
You’ll also use 3 tablespoons of butter.
Tumblr media
And some garlic.  Yes, freshly chopped is best, but this is a shortcut that I use a lot.
Tumblr media
Big flavor and no hassle.
Anywho, while you’re chopping and measuring you should have your pasta water boiling - cook up your little ears and then drain them and set aside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once that’s done, toss your bacon into a large skillet and get to cooking!
Tumblr media
Then you’ll add the sliced shallots (yum, what flavor!). When that cooks down a bit, drop in the garlic.
Tumblr media
Drain the grease and then remove that heavenly mixture to a bowl and set it aside. This step comes together quickly and it’s where you’ll be happy that you already have everything measured out and handy.  You’ll add 2 tablespoons of butter to the skillet and let it start to bubble. Whisk in the chicken broth and cream, once it simmers turn the heat down and add the parmesan cheese.  When the cheese melts into the sauce add your bacon mixture, the peas, lemon juice, chives, and your salt and pepper.  Whisk everything until it thickens, just a couple of minutes.  Try not to just drink this with a straw.
Tumblr media
Add the drained pasta and toss to make sure it’s all coated in that delicious sauce.  If your skillet isn’t large enough to add the pasta without making a mess, you can always toss everything in a serving bowl, but that’s one more dish to wash.  Serve with an extra sprinkle of parmesan and maybe a side salad to scrub your veins clean after you devour this creamy, bacon-y, cheesy bowl of comfort.
Tumblr media
I’m definitely keeping this meal in the rotation, but maybe as a once-a-month treat.  Mickey is a hug fan and I like seeing his eyes light up.
Here’s the recipe, and other than cheating with my pre-minced garlic I should confess that I did not have chives on hand so I minced the ends of some green onions.  Close enough, fabulous flavor. Orecchiette Pancetta (serves 6) 1 lb orecchiette pasta
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
 4oz pancetta or bacon, diced
1 medium shallot, thinly sliced
1 cup chicken broth
3/4 cup heavy cream
8 oz wedge of parmesan, grated (about 2 cups, save a bit for garnish) 1 cup frozen peas, thawed  (don’t use canned - too mushy!)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon minced chives
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Instructions: Cook the pasta according to package & drain. Set aside. In large skillet heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.  Add pancetta/bacon and cook until crisp, 4-6 minutes. Add the shallot, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and saute until fragrant, about 1 minute. Drain the grease from the pan and remove bacon mixture to a bowl. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter in the pan on medium-high heat until it starts to bubble. Whisk in broth and cream and bring to a simmer, reduce heat to medium low. Add the parmesan and whisk until melted. Add bacon mixture, peas, lemon juice, chives, salt & pepper and whisk until sauce begins to thicken - about 3 minutes. Add the drained pasta and toss to coat. Serve garnished with grated parmesan and some cracked black pepper. ENJOY! I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t enjoy this dish, and if you know someone who wouldn’t you should probably get them the help they need.  It’s so flavorful and satisfying.  Serve it to people you love, that includes yourself.  Then go walk a mile or ten to compensate.  Life is all about balance. Hope you’re cozy and happy today. Stay safe, stay well. XOXO, Nancy

devlog: 12/24/2020
Today I think I finally finished the monkey enemy, unless there's something in forgot, I think I implemented everything I wanted to.
While doing this, I ended up doing other things in the process, be it as a requisite to finish the enemy or as a consequence of something I needed to do.
I implemented a keyboard shortcut for moving the camera and increasing and decreasing the zoom level so that I could look up close the changes I was making in the script that rotates the projectile.
Also, I did modify this script so that I could define a specific 'fps' the rotation animation could seem to have, and also define a 'play speed' for the animation so that the animation plays faster but renders the same frames in the same way it was rendering when it was slower.
I also made a throwing effect and wasted some time exploring the way godot imports sound samples. And finally, whilst doing all this, I had a problem with OBS Studio that, even touhgh did not stop the streaming, made my camera freeze.
So, I you're interested, check out the stream timelapse (the embedded videos bellow won't show on tumbler dashboard, only on the blog view):

Also check out the livestream itself, both on youtube and twitch. Since I had to reboot in the middle of the stream, it also got cut in half, unfortunately. But fortunately, youtube was able to maintain the stream intact with the reboot.

A Reflection on Magic, the Pandemic, and the Dark Side of Arena
Hello to all the readers who may stumble upon this in the search for new Magic content. I wrote this mostly to fill a void in my life that has opened up over the last year and more of a mental health thing than some form of Magic related advice but since it is about that, I thought they’d go hand in hand. I love Magic. Or at least I have loved Magic? It’s hard to tell. Like nearly everyone on this planet, I’ve been shut off from in-person Magic and it had/has me left down. I normally volunteer at my LGS and help them organize their tournaments and judge the events and generally whatever else they ask me to do because I really love Magic. I love playing with my locals who don’t spend hundreds of dollars and craft GP/MF level decks. I love watching a group of people playing draft chaff and off beat home brews and where adults and teenagers can compete with one another on that level. I enjoy sitting off to the corner on the store’s EDH night and listening to games and drawing tokens for games in my own corner while I wait for my own games or sometimes my ow turns. I also love traveling with my wife to cities and go compete in GP/MFs where we usually both scrub out of the main event by round 3 or 4 and then hit the vendors and side events as well as explore the cities for new restaurants. I miss Welcome Days where adults bring in kids and I show them the ropes. I love meeting adults who poke their noses in and ask me “Magic is still a thing? I played that in high school” and show them the changes. I can still remember the Theros Beyond Death prerelease last year and thought how much fun it was to not work the event for once and just play. And looking back, boy am I glad I entered the THB prerelease.
February was the start of the downturn. Our EDH night was slightly less full but I just figured it was due to the weather since the winter usually has a downturn in the attendance for every event. But then the rotating cast of 10-15 FNM players was 6; Pioneer on Saturday had 3. The next week, the EDH crowd was down to from the usual 6-8 pods to 2. FNM and Pioneer failed to fire. The news that COVID-19 was starting to creep into the Midwest prompted me to ask the store what precautions we wanted to take and when we were going to stop in general.
I work in chemical research and I have a background in pharmaceuticals and once (or twice) studied the MCATs and considered going to med school. I was definitely concerned but in February it hadn’t reached my state (yet) and I wanted the store to be ready for the imminent shutdown and continued downtick in participation (my LGS and I had been strategizing how to move up in events and the store ranking on the WPN). But it’s a red state. Science denial must be a recessive trait that the Midwest incorporated into its identity for a long time and I was told that I had some freedom but to not go crazy. I thought I’m a volunteer. I’m not spending what little money I have on stuff for you guys. So, I did the best thing I could think of for free, I started a Discord server. I was really excited at the prospect. I had just bought a webcam in case my workplace started working from home and thought how cool it would be to be able to organize events in Arena and talk through Discord when the store wasn’t available. I asked if we could hang up a flyer and tell all the Magic customers that they continue with tournaments and Magic if they joined the Discord I set up in the store’s name.
My LGS asked how much this was going to cost them and I said exactly as much as it costs them now if not a little less since we don’t need the store’s utilities or a cashier behind the counter in the after hours to work the tournament. They were happy and I got the greenlight. Things worked okay at first. Those with Arena accounts showed for a few weeks. Others I knew were interested were convinced that we were overly sensitive to the virus and FNMs continued to limp along with 4-6 people until everything ground down to a halt.
Come mid-March, COVID had finally reached the state and the city. Cases were light, a few hundred people tested each day, single digit cases detected but I again was worried. My workplace had already begun educating everyone on how to wash their hands properly and disinfect every surface and everyone was issued a bleach spray bottle with their name and a serial number on it. While the mayor and governor hadn’t ordered a shutdown yet, I advised strongly that the store go ahead and if they wanted to continue that I wouldn’t be there to assist until the curve was sufficiently flattened.
I’m not sure why but they trusted me and listened. I was glad and I pushed again for people to join the Discord server. Players were reluctant but I assured them that this may be the future for some time and if they get on now, they can still get the Ravnica intro quests and start building up their Arena collections. I got more on my side, we had 8-10 and got them all to try and hook anyone else they knew to join us. However, by the end of March, my workplace had moved to 100% virtual and with my extra time, I had begun to unwittingly shift the power dynamic in the store by accident. You see, I really love Magic. I was now working from home for a job that required me to have direct physical access to hundreds of thousands of dollars or sensitive equipment that need recertification when they get moved 12 inches down a work bench and dangerous chemicals I don’t want near me unless I know there’s an inspected chemical shower nearby. When the campus shut down, I got very bored. I did what research I could from my home portal, attended virtual conferences and webinars every day, but I had tons of down time. That meant watching my wife play Animal Crossing, playing with my dogs, marathon sessions of Civilization but most crucially, I also began grinding Arena.
My local meta had been defined by the understanding that none of us were really Arena players. I had played when the Kaladesh and Amonkhet closed betas were happening, but I was turned off by the fact that all my playing of those formats amounted to nothing when it launched with Ixalan and I would start from square one. Everyone in the group typically shied away from tier 1 tournament decks because to all of us, it was more fun to goof around with RG auras and Tilonalli’s Summoner decks than it was to grind Esper Hero or the new Uro decks. And the limitation that everyone didn’t have all the shocklands meant we were all playing on roughly the same card pools with some variation due to our play styles. So when I suggested we all start playing Arena to replace the tournaments, it worked because it meant we all played the same dumb decks we’d play in person with a few exceptions of having less than perfect mana bases.
But I would find myself grinding Arena everyday where my friends and locals were not. Even though I jumped into Arena at mid-March, I finished the Theros Beyond Death mastery at level 78 when Ikoria began to creep around the corner. I had just begun to get back into Magic when Fate Reforged hit and didn’t realize how much I love wedge color alignments over shards but boy did I love Abzan in Khans standard and now I was in love with Abzan again in Ikoria standard. Grinding the way I did meant I drafted most afternoons for the first month of Ikoria (and forced Temur every time) and started climbing the ranked ladder in the evenings. Ikoria would also mark the first time I spent money on Arena. I’m notoriously spend-thrift in video games and anything you can free-to-play I do religiously because you shouldn’t make a game grindable over the course of years if you give me that option. But drafting took gems and I really love drafting but most people at my LGS are too concerned about rares than learning to do it properly and a lot of younger players feel lost when I draft a zero rare deck and go 4-0 and collect my prizes. By the end of April, I would reach Platinum in constructed and Gold in limited. But now my LGS was far less inclined to play with me. I didn’t brag about any of my rankings but the skill disparity had begun to creep in as well as the difference in our collections. Having played so much Arena, I could see the tells the software gives away that paper Magic doesn’t. I learned to read when the game would hang up on the beginning of combat and end steps because they’re holding potential responses. I began to do the full control shortcut to bluff counter spells and removal. In paper Magic, if my opponent would sequence things wrong or tap their mana wrong, we’d make jokes and rewind it because it’s one of those human errors that we all make and redo it the right way.
But Arena was different; some learned the hard way to not trust the auto-tapper, some didn’t realize that the way they normally stack triggers in paper is backwards and too late to fix after a spell or ability resolved. And I couldn’t help them. And I let them make their mistakes because I can’t change Arena. If they use the auto-tapper and they realize that Arena doesn’t tap the Castle Vantress even though they couldn’t activate it anyway and they lose a dual source, I couldn’t help them. If they have the lethal Explosion in hand but forgot to hit Control in their second main so they can stack the Wilderness Reclamation triggers in their end step, I don’t concede out of pity.
In May, I try and keep the Magic going by suggesting that we shift the format to a draft limited but they’re unconvinced of the website that allows you to simulate an 8-person draft and then import the drafted card lists to Arena. Why? Because they don’t have the cards already and I’ve changed the dynamic. They know I’m much more skilled at Arena and Ikoria drafting. The news has also been reporting that the curve was flattening, and our state was lifting restrictions on gatherings. They want to play EDH and paper Magic, not this digital intangible game. I reluctantly agree but keep grinding on Arena anyway. My friends didn’t want to play Magic on Arena and I couldn’t understand why. I was getting burned out on drafting at this point and the drafts were harder to fire off a month and a half later, work was returning on a limited schedule where I was onsite 75% and virtual 25%, it really did seem like things were returning to normal.
In June I finish the Ikoria mastery and at this point my wife had begun to show more interest in playing on Arena and trying to get her account a little more stocked since our normal paper system is I aggregate everything we typically need and I make her desired deck and hand it off to her to wreck people on FNM but since I didn’t have to judge, I got to play and we couldn’t both play from my account at the same time. I casually start hers and I get the wild hair that maybe I should make a loaner account in the store’s name and if anyone says they don’t have the cards, they can borrow the store’s account for the tournament. I make the account but put the pipe dream on hold when Wizards announces that in-store play can resume with the Core 2021 prerelease. I could read between the lines and see that the curve was trending the wrong way and thought it was a bad idea but at my insistence, everyone would have to wear a mask at all times and hand sanitizer was available every 15 feet and the store had lots of space for players to spread out. The turnout was low which helped as well, and I had everyone who showed up at least aware that I was trying to keep the Discord going and that in case there’s another shutdown that there was another avenue for them.
Well, I got my wish because within a week of the launch of Core 2021, my state had regressed, and cases were exploding and gathering restrictions were sent back in place. Shortly after that, Wizards suspended in-store play again and with that I created the store’s Arena account. At the time, things were pretty good. The locals weren’t playing as much and my server was still fairly empty but most of the Magic Twitch community I interacted with had strongly adjusted to the new paradigm. EDH streaming was commonplace, I had my new Arena account to focus on building up as well as my own. Pro level events and Opens were being held on Arena and the expansion of Amonkhet Remastered gave me hope that Magic was on the mend. But I also think it was with Core 2021 that things started to slide into the negative for me. Grinding the second account was frustrating me a lot. The lack of human interaction was tilting me out for no reason. Some days the server would have me wait a whole minute (the horror?!) for a game and then my opponent would be the world’s slowest red player where everything seemed delayed. There would strings of games I would play where I couldn’t get a third land drop after a mull to 4 and other times where I’d flood out and would have won if it weren’t for generic whiny reason why everyone says they lose.
Maybe it was when I began to see that Arena is not Magic the Gathering as much as it is a video game that it began to really sour on me. For those of you who don’t play a lot of Arena and instead interact with humans over webcams is that Arena is designed for you to not play off beat home brews except in direct challenges with your friends. The game is meant for you to play the best combination of 75 cards and for you to help it machine learn through millions of matches what is and what is not the correct play pattern based on the available information you have. It wants you to play the very best decks in a format against the other best decks. I started to see this in Ikora standard when decks would scoop if you were on the play and went turn 2 Agonizing Remorse. Decks were and still are so linear that they can’t handle that kind of disruption or it’s a matter of the players know it’s faster to accumulate wins by scooping than grinding out a long game.
If you need evidence of whether or not this is true, you should play Arena now and see how often people scoop against the double Ruin Crab opener with a Fabled Passage back-to-back. Or if an opponent against your Lurrus Auras deck will time out when they know they can’t win. In paper Magic, when you drive 4 hours to a major venue, pay your entry fee, you never see your opponent rage scoop unless it’s Legacy and you know what your opponent’s on and you mull to zero so you can see what’s in their deck. You call a judge to your table if they start stalling. Nothing is more annoying that an opponent spamming “Good Game” at you through a match when it’s obvious that you’re not killing them that turn but they’re empty handed and have nothing relevant on board.
I’ll admit myself that what my wife calls “Wizard Chores” for the Daily quests, if I’m 1 red spell short of finishing a quest, I’ll log in for one more game and Boulder Dash my opponent’s creature or cast Shock to face and immediately scoop. Who is that helping? I’d spend the week at work in my down times thinking about what dumb cards I hadn’t played with from a set, start making a list, furiously find the cards on a Friday afternoon and grab dinner with the wife and then race to my LGS for FNM.  Magic used to be something I only got to do twice a week with people in a shared setting and we’d unroll our playmats, shuffle up our jank, and laugh and generally have a good time for three to four hours. With Magic at my fingertips, Arena is a distillation of efficiency at spell slinging combined with the minor rewards system we’ve come to recognize the free-to-play traps to “encourage” us to play different things. If I want to play 100 matches in a day, all I need to do is sit at my computer long enough. If I want to play my old jank on Arena, I can’t even count on the Casual play channel to help since it’s always filled with people with 55 of the 60 cards that make the best deck learning how to play before they commit the wild cards for the deck.
Zendikar Rising has been a pretty dark point for everyone on Arena I believe. It seems like a lifetime ago that Omnath was printed and that I had immediately cashed in four mythic rare wildcards for the deck I would get to play with on Arena for 2 weeks before Wizards realized their mistake. Honestly before I had started writing this in the week before Kaldheim will hit Arena, I forgot that Omnath was part of the most recent set as all I can remember Zendikar Rising giving us is the extremely irritating Ruin Crab and Soaring Thought Thief. The few locals I had left on my Discaord server when ZNR released had lost interest in Arena since they enjoyed the Ravnica standard that was rotating out and Pioneer was not yet available for Arena. I’ve encouraged nearly everyone I know from my LGS to buy webcams since October given that the current state of the COVID world is not likely to go away and the new culture and channels that have opened up in the world to fill the void of EDH has some level of benefit even when in-person play resumes. Not many people play and I’ll search for an occasional game on the official Discord when the craving strikes. Some of my friends have been taking advantage of the webcam world and started playing older formats with me over webcam such as Pioneer and Modern to rekindle their love for Magic and the hope that we can start playing tournaments over webcam. Finishing up the ZNR mastery passes on my two accounts and my wife’s account has been giving me a much-needed break from Arena and honestly, it’s probably done the most to lift my spirits.
I’ve been taking a lot more time to reflect on why I love Magic and I plan on doing in the future. The first thing I know I’m going to do and stick to is not get a Mastery Pass for mt LGS store’s account. They don’t pay for all the work I put into the one already grinding multiple accounts is not good for my mental well-being. The second thing I know I am going to do is relearn how to have fun in Magic again. Not really hinted at in this article so far is the fact I love the art in Magic and I’m often inspired by my own crazy mind to illustrate my own works or reimagine my favorite cards with my own art. Since the release of Rise of Skywalker, I had been working on a personal project of creating a second expansion to the largely underground Star Wars the Gathering card game and ended up making 200 unique, draftable cards. I wouldn’t call myself an artist because I’m still learning and I don’t necessarily aspire to an artist but I would love to improve my skills and one day make a piece that’s so good someone wants on a card. Over the last two years, I’ve been deeply jealous of how amazing and hard working the Magic cosplayers are and that I should put my art to good use and make my own cosplays. And then there’s the playing of Magic. I miss the Gathering part of Magic. So this brings us to the bedrock of this piece. I hope to continue this blog steadily as time moves forward. I’m rarely ever satisfied or have my attention on any one project for too long but 2021 is a new year. And I hope that the title is a hint to the future. Whatever it is; whether it’s deck construction, art alters, or Magic cosplay, story, general discussion, that’s what I’m here for. It’s the Thrill of what I might work on next and I promise because I’m terrible right now at doing so, I’ll be sure to take pictures and try and stream when I can to keep myself honest about the whole deal. I hope you’ll all join me or at least join the Discord to yell at me.

The Killing Frost - Review
I usually wait for my library to have a copy before reading the latest book. Not this time.
Honestly, this is more of a live blog than a review.
Spoilers up to The Killing Frost and June 2020 for the Patreon stories.
Before I begin, I want to mention that I have physical copies of only some of the books. These are Rosemary and Rue, One Salt Sea, The Winter Long, The Brightest Fell. As of yesterday, I count the Kindle copy of The Killing Frost in that number and will pick up a physical copy eventually. Everything else I borrow from the library, which are usually always available. This series is something I keep re-reading because there’s something new every time I read.
“It doesn’t matter what I wear to the wedding, we both know it’s going to be completely covered in blood before we reach ‘I do’“ and we’re off to a wonderful start. I’m so glad Toby has become genre-savvy. She can now anticipate and plan for being covered in blood. That’s character development.
“My name is October Daye because my mother should never have been allowed to name her own children.” No, your name is October Daye because Eira wanted children named thematically after their parents and the Torquills went for all the months of the year. You can blame September for that one. Or I suppose August is older than January, so blame Simon.
Interesting that she’s accepted that one day she’ll burn out the rest of her humanity.
“Now I live in a house that I own free and clear, thank to Sylvester” Does he still pay property taxes on it, or is that Toby? Does Sylvester have an accountant, and if so, are they fae or human?
Toby, you could definitely get married at the courthouse and then do a fae wedding. They won’t recognize the mortal one but you can still say you’re married. Do Tybalt have any form of human id? I guess they could magic something up and confuse the attendant.
Hi Karen! Something I forgot for my “Open Question” post - why does Stacy have two Seer daughters when Seers have been nearly extinct for centuries?
How’s that for a plot hook? Your seer niece lets you know what you’re doing and with whom. Easy.
After everything Toby’s been through, she has a right to be paranoid when someone knocks at the door after Karen’s done warning her.
Could still be a trap. Negative points for not confirming with Tybalt first.
His date idea is very romantic, I will give him that.
Does Tybalt even have a last name? I don’t remember if he does.
It’s always fun to recognize people before the narrator mentions them by name. Hi Patrick and Dianda! This isn’t suspicious at all.
Does Dianda use the same wheelchair whenever she’s on land? If so, where do they store it? Or do they haul it with them? Is there a storage unit filled with Undersea fae stuff?
Patrick, this isn’t weird at all. You’re digging for something. Given that the summary says Toby needs to invite her legal father to her wedding, I assume you’re trying to make sure he’s there.
I’m not convinced Simon’s trying to wake up Evening. He doesn’t like her, and if losing his way home made him forget August even exists, I’m not sure he’d return to Evening given a chance.
And there’s the actual kicker - by not inviting Simon, Toby allows his boss to claim offense. Evening claiming offense on his behalf is a very very bad thing, and that’s why it’s important he’s there. I am certain Patrick’s parents weren’t at his wedding, but they probably washed their hands of him when they heard who he was marrying. And their liege probably didn’t care about a landless Baron in another Kingdom, so there was no consequence.
The Luidaeg did tell Toby she has to find Simon - along with two other tasks. What happened to those?
Looks like Patrick does have the broad strokes of the plots of The Winter Long and The Brightest Fell - given how much Toby doesn’t tell people, I wasn’t sure. She didn’t tell him about Poppy prior to the Ducky of Ships, after all.
Patrick and Dianda do want him back - looks like I might right that he goes to Saltmist when this all clears up. And they really want him to divorce Amandine, which, yeah. That marriage is not a good one. I firmly believe that if they do divorce, both Toby and August would declare for Simon.
“Bring him home” from Les Mis starts playing. It’s interesting that Dianda is the one telling Toby this.
“You and Tybalt have been banking on my ignorance throughout this whole process, and now your reward is that you have to go with me to look for Simon Torquill, and Tybalt can’t come” I love how she rolls with it. This would have been unheard of in The Winter Long.
“And yes, I actually wanted him to be there when I did that, if it was even remotely possible.” Aww. It’s a shame her relationship with Sylvester is deteriorating at the same time her relationship with Simon is growing, but it is growing.
I assume Spike, being fae, is also functionally immortal and won’t die of old age.
“I hardly wind up ambushed and alone at all these days.” True, thanks to your ever growing cast of rotating characters.
I love Toby’s continued roasting of Evening and Amandine.
If Evening’s been in the Mists for a thousand years and also popped for Tam Lin in Scotland 500 years ago, how is she getting back and forth between the two? Though she convince Torin to take Saltmist when she was asleep, so maybe she’s just been dreamwalking.
Hi Marcia! What weird things are you going to do this book that no one’s going to pick up on?
Dean and Quentin are cute together.
Wait, this means Toby needs to invite Amandine to her wedding. Fuck.
It’s the Summer Roads key again.
Right, Ceres could do it too. And Toby’s actually thinking of the consequences of her actions.
Quentin will be a force of reckoning on the High King’s throne.
Hi Etienne! You could totally go visit Toby whenever you want.
Randomly appearing magic door - technically, the knowe could bring them directly to the Moon Garden if it wanted to. It wants to bring them to this door, and let them know something’s going on.
Blood for the blood door? Toby has a right to Shadowed Hills, and the knowe knows and likes her. Maybe this is a way of helping with her eventual claim?
“Cool. Good to know. We’re all going to be eaten by weird magic flowers.” “Let’s face it, this isn’t much of a surprise.”
It’s Raysel’s bed/coffin. Given that they’re looking for Evening, I don’t like the parallels to Raysel’s Firstborn.
Neither Evening nor Simon have an interest in Raysel, but Sylvester doesn’t know that.
I love October’s speech to Sylvester about Rayseline.
It would likely be good for Raysel to spend a year with Toby at her house. She can meet Toby’s teens and live without her parents for a while. Might be awkward when Dean shows up but that’s a conversation they need to have.
Interesting that Raysel’s magic changes - did she get more of her father’s scent?
Summer Roads key is weird, and definitely more plot related than it appears. Given that it’s currently a MacGuffin to get to Evening, that’s pretty powerful.
What is this weird black bubble.
Shit, May got impaled.
So this is where Simon stored Luna and Raysel for 14 years. I personally wouldn’t anchor a formless void holding a Blodynbryd off the Rose Road where she has power, but it ‘worked out’ I suppose.
Toby’s headache is concerning me. I wonder if she’s doing the impossible without knowing it, and that’s what’s causing the magical backlash.
How did Luna and Raysel escape the bubble? There’s been no indication that someone found them, so perhaps they found Simon’s door.
Toby’s talking to Maeve as roses. How is she doing this? Why is Maeve (or part of Maeve?) part of the Rose Road? Didn’t the Luidaeg and Toby turn onto Annis’s Roads at some point during The Winter Long? Did they transition from the Summer Roads part of the Rose Roads into the Winter Roads? Is that even a thing? Why does the Summer Key allow them access to it?
Reviewing TWL again, the Luidaeg used the Key to open Annis’s forgotten road to take a shortcut to Shadowed Hills. Then Luna used the Key to open a Rose Road to Evening. The Key, which “belonged to [Luna’s] grandmother”. Unspecified grandmother. Maybe it’s not a Summer Roads Key afterall.
Roses are the thing that connects all three Branches - Maeve has them, Eira has them, Amandine has them.
Unrelated to the current plot, I think Raysel would be great with flowers. It’s implied that when a mixed blood uses a hope chest to pick one bloodline, they keep something from the missing bloodline. Tybalt’s niece Cailin (Daoine Sidhe/Cait Sidhe -> Cait Sidhe) is extraordinarily good with illusions and can’t shapeshift. August is relatively good with illusions (enough to bind Quentin) and kept her red hair and yellow eyes.
And Maeve (or a representative?) listens to Toby. Wow.
Quentin has strong and unflattering opinions about Evening’s forest scene. I love how the characters feel focusing on the small details. They’ve accepted the impossible and have moved beyond it.
Interesting that there’s no scent of roses before finding Evening’s clearing. Another open question: why does Evening also get apples in addition to roses and snow? What causes the shift between roses+snow and roses+apples?
And why doesn’t anyone but the Luidaeg recognize that apples are also Evening’s?
“I wish I’d met Simon and Sylvester’s parents... it doesn’t make sense.” “Most Daoine Sidhe I’ve known have something floral about their magic. Simon doesn’t” Does his mulled cider not count? Fruit isn’t floral? I want to know Septimius’s magic scents as well, because I’m pretty sure Simon got the apple cider from him, via his own mother aka Evening’s daughter Fómhar. The October Daye wiki is failing me on some of these names.
Please let her know that the twins were once changelings this book. Please.
May, I’m sorry you have a literal hole in your body, but I live for magical theory.I need moar.
Hello, Sleeping Beauty. Also, Simon is rather good at archery and I don’t know why that doesn’t come up more often.
Simon is not looking well. He’s also doing some bizarre leaps of conversation -
October: We came here to look for you.
Simon: Where’s Oleander?
No one brought up Oleander? I get that the spell is doing weird things to his mind, maybe it’s skipping.
"who seemed to have stolen most of his memory of who he’d been”
Jossed on him not seeking out Evening, but kinda confirmed on the reason why: he doesn’t give a reason why he’s working with Evening. The spell’s not working as well as it did on August - he is definitely getting confused, if only briefly.
Is that why he didn’t show up during Night and Silence or The Unkindest Tide? He was stuck in the clearing? What has he been eating? Is he still wearing the same clothes he was in for The Winter Long and The Brightest Fell?
October: Hey, you can wait here for a hundred years, we just need you to take a trip to see the Luidaeg. It’ll be super quick.
Toby, I love you.
AND HE REMEMBERS PATRICK. Enough to stand down, at least. But he think’s Patrick’s dead? Oh no no no. Did he think that for most of the last century? This keeps getting sadder.
At least he’s not hurting May and Quentin.
I don’t think he sent the Doppelganger in Rosemary and Rue, pretty sure that was Devin.
He doesn’t remember the events of TBF, interesting.
Fucking hell, that was too easy. I should have seen it would be too easy. And he thinks Amandine modified Toby’s memory?
I guess May doesn’t need to worry about infection.
Helpful pixies! Glad to see more of them. Toby better deliver that dinner soon.
“Also to be fair, the terrible disaster was usually either my fault or happening to me” True words, Toby.
Hi Walther and Cassie!
HI Luidaeg!
If her debts are currently balanced, then she did work off the other two from The Unkindest Tide.
Yeah, pretty sure Simon hasn’t broken the Law yet.
Emotionally mature Toby strikes again. She’s been so this entire book. The amount of difficult conversations so far is pretty large.
This focus on Stacy not wanting her kids to date is interesting, unless it’s a red herring. And she grew up with Toby in Shadowed Hills. Not Firstborn, I won’t guess one of the Three - Marianne? But she was fully grown back during the earthquake. Did her fae grandparents have a human partner like Simon and Sylvester’s parents, and her fae parent was also a changeling? They moved away after their child died because they couldn’t deal with the grief? A hope chest moving her blood? How old was October when she met Stacy?
Hi Arden!
Recap time with the Luidaeg.
A solution with Dianda and Patrick? If he goes and lives in Saltmist, he’s far from people who want to harm him.
If Simon’s so good at using other people’s blood, then potentially he could use Amandine/August/Toby’s blood to be a poor man’s Dóchas Sidhe. For healing, maybe?
‘Her husband could only hear the ones who belonged to him” - huh, interesting tidbit about Oberon.
Torquill lore! Finally revealed to Toby!
Off to Goldengreen. Return of the water trauma for Toby, boo.
Oh my god she’s an otter. So cute! Yes, everyone should be an otter. Bite her, Toby. Do it.
Marcia! Does Marcia not know that Simon exists as a separate person from Sylvester? Acacia at least understood that Simon wasn’t Sylvester, even if she didn’t get the concept of twins. I’m not surprised she survived Simon’s spells - Evening seemed to completely ignore her in TWL. And Firstborns tend to get mind whammed if they think about her for too long. More evidence for the Titania theory (or Maeve, if she’s in multiple pieces).
That many spells can’t be good.
I am not surprised that Toby asked how to give Simon her way home. This family has a tendency to pass around debts.
Also, now would be a good time to call Tybalt. Might be faster than driving to Half Moon Bay. I guess the plan is to steal a Selkie skin and swim to Saltmist since Goldengreen was a bust? But yeah, he’s probably not up to date with TUK if he’s been stuck in the clearing for a year.
“evil hot potato” good phrase. This stinks a little of self-sabotage.
Diva did need to be shifted, interesting.
Simon wouldn’t have gotten away with it, there’s nothing natural about a boy eating 6+ bowls of soup, especially if he kept doing it past when he’s physical ill. Poor Quentin.
Interesting that Simon’s not trying to cause harm. His superpowered spells are doing a terrific amount of damage, but nothing that can’t technically be reversed if they have the power to do so. Even Quentin was harmed only because he couldn’t stop eating, and that wasn’t Simon’s intention.
Dean admittedly is not have a good day. Neither is Quentin.
Simon under the Luidaeg’s curse is surprisingly self-reflective. I wasn’t expecting that.
Fuck off, Evening.
I didn’t think we’d get the reason behind why the Luidaeg couldn’t lie in this book, that’s nice.
Go Toby, tear this bitch down.
It is interesting that of the three daughters of Titania we’ve met, each one follows a different school of magic. Guess it shows that schools of magic don’t always follow blood.
Evening has been dreamwalking. Stronger when she’s sleeping? Can’t keep her asleep, can’t keep her awake. Can they turn her into a stone?
Confirmation: Titania was banished, and I assume only Oberon could do that.
“Lady, let alone” Maybe in the first blood changing dream, with her father who I think was actually Oberon? I don’t remember.
Tybalt and Walther also aren’t having good days.
I don’t get what Toby’s figured out.
“Rolling emergency that is your ongoing existence” Love it.
Dean’s day is getting better.
There goes the hot potato. I appreciate that Simon’s first action is to get the Luidaeg to reverse it and I’m sure Tybalt isn’t far behind.
Simon’s spending a good portion of the book confused.
Toby just coughed up a pigeon. I can’t determine if that’s weirder than the Luidaeg pulling it out of her chest.
“None of my enemies are remotely that powerful” I’m pretty sure there won’t be a book where Toby travels back in time, but just imagine what a book that would be. And Simon’s mulled cider is back, nice. And confused again.
Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Thornton?? OBERON???
Is his name a play on ‘root and thorn’?
Did he make himself human so Janet could fall in love with him as human? He’s expecting her.
Her name was suppose to be Almandine? And she doesn’t count as home to Toby, no wonder.
She got Oberon lost in Annwn and then pulled him out again. What the fuck.
Confused man remains confused. “He looked like a man who’d just lost everything” Something tells me that isn’t because he’s meeting his father-in-law/a physical god. Did Evening tell him something about Oberon’s return that hasn’t been revealed yet?
Lots of people get to come home today. This is great.
Time to get status reports. Toby is calm in crisis, as long as no one’s actively trying to kill her.
Let the Luidaeg and her father catch up. Wow. I didn’t expect they’d find Oberon with more books left to go.
Toby owes Walther far more than just one pizza - get that boy home and let him sleep.
Way too tired to consider how the car got there. Is it only one day since the Cat in the Rafters? Is this book taking place over the course of a single day? How long were they on the Rose Roads? Everyone needs sleep and food.
I do appreciate Simon taking responsibility for his actions and while apologizing doesn’t fix anything, it is the right thing to do. Toby hasn’t had a chance to tell him about her meeting with Patrick and Dianda, has she? He assumes he’ll be elfshot.
Not that his opinion matters on the Toby/Tybalt relationship, but I like how he’s being supportive.
Get married in the courthouse Toby, The fae won’t recognize it but it takes pressure off the wedding in Toronto so when that goes south, you are still married. Take May, Jazz, Quentin, Raj and whoever else you can grab at short notice.
Good on Toby for checking in on Tybalt and having a difficult conversation.
Back to Goldengreen. Do let Marcia hit Simon, let her do that. Once again, no one remembers that Marcia’s survived things a thin blooded changeling shouldn’t. And Simon doesn’t want to face Patrick and Dianda. It’s been over a hundred years since he last saw them. I wonder how much of the time he thought they were dead?
Changing people into trees can at least be reversed. There’s going to be trauma, but it’s better that everyone in Goldengreen was a tree or toadstool then dead.
“We have access to Oberon now, we can ask him for more Laws if you think we need them.” Oh god. I love this entire chapter, the dialogue is great and too numerous to quote.
And Simon, Patrick, and Dianda aren’t saying anything. Thank you for taking charge of this scene, Toby, otherwise nothing’s going to get done.
“Not that we’re going to get a honeymoon, since someone is inevitably going to try to  murder or abduct us” If you say it and plan for it, it might not happen.
Toby’s little interjection to Dean, the pro-mammal conversation, this chapter is pure good.
Can Simon say Eira’s name now? It choked in his throat during TWL.
Are they really getting into the Janet thing now?
Side-stepped that conversation. Simon definitely wasn’t expecting his best friend and wife to convince to divorce his wife, and then have his step-daughter and her fiance agree as well.
OT3! OT3! Oh man, I didn’t expect this and I love it so much! OT3! Do it! Also, Dean’s day just got weirder.
OT3!
“hey, kiddo we want to open our marriage and include the man who just turned you into a tree” so many difficult conversations to have.
Oh my fucking god, this is everything I could have wanted and didn’t know to ask for.
Wedding time? IS IT WEDDING TIME? “My mother’s divorce proceedings” THAT WORKS TOO.
Glad Toby is still carrying her knife even to this. She’s going to be wearing it to her own wedding.
I still can’t believe Simon’s the one calling for the divorce but good for him. Prior to this, I assumed it would be Amandine insisting on it. I assume the news got to Sylvester and Luna and I would love to know what Sylvester thinks of this.
Hadn’t realized Evening got Quentin fostered to Shadowed Hills because she wanted to marry him and become High Queen.
Fuck off, Amandine. Poor August. Raj gets one line in this book :(
And now it’s confirmed public knowledge that Amandine’s Firstborn.
Called Toby declaring for Simon, and I love how fierce she’s picturing her human father during this.
Also, I firmly believe if August hadn’t disappeared and Amandine still married Jonathan Daye (and Patrick and Dianda hadn’t convinced Simon to divorce her), Simon would have been a part of that. And if Amandine hadn’t told him and just brought October home one day, he would have helped Toby still see her own father.
Patrick and Dianda have gotten him to sleep and eat, good. He wasn’t looking well a couple chapters (a week?) ago.
He’s still trying to protect August to make choosing Amandine easier. I still think she’s choosing him.
CALLED IT.
Hi Oberon! Nobody recognizes you, that’s interesting. And you can calm everyone in the crowd. So you have some power.
“You have no descendant line to stand for you” Is that why Eria’s focused on breeding pure blood Daoine Sidhe? She gets power from everyone who declares for her? My current theory is that she wants to be the true Queen of Faerie, get rid of the Three and rule by herself.
Surprise wedding! Five minutes after Simon got divorced! I love this OT3 so damn much.
Dean, Peter and Toby all agree, August doesn’t say no. Toby has two new step-parents and two step-brothers? I honestly can’t think of Dianda as Toby’s step-mother. She’s Toby’s punchy friend and also the women who married Toby’s step-father/ fae legal father.
Peter’s the one who probably going to spend the most time with Simon, given that he’s still an enemy in Goldengreen. Is August moving down to the Undersea? She can’t stay in the tower anymore. Maybe she can crash at Toby’s or Shadowed Hills or Tamed Lightning if she doesn’t want to stay underwater. Has she seen January since she got home? Or maybe stay at Muir Woods.
I would love to see the dynamics of this new family. And the conversations of the OT3 in the past week.
I’m glad to see Simon and August out of Amandine’s grasp. She was abusive.
Wait, Toby doesn’t need to invite Amandine to her wedding because they’re not legally related anymore. Excellent.
Really wondering how the news is taken at Shadowed Hills.
What a great book. What wonderful surprises. I couldn’t have asked for more. No one died. Lots of trauma from super powered compulsion and shapeshifting to deal with but honestly, things are better for a lot of people.
To me, it feels like Simon’s story has mostly closed. He can rest and be happy with his spouses in Saltmist, and pop up whenever Toby needs info about Evening’s plan or blood magic, like Walther does for alchemist solutions. Staying mostly out of the line of fire. Good for him. I was so concerned he would die as a result of resolving his story.
Review of Shine in Pearl to follow.

Salt chews, salt chews... The cart by the butchery normally has them well-stocked, but he knows he’ll be cheated yet again by the merchant. Especially with the preferred, terrible-smelling snack of choice for who he’d been apprenticed to. Arvin. That strange enigma of an enchanter.
Rhys let himself wander for a while, greeting the natives with a smile despite their frowns and wary looks. For a land filled to the brim with mages in power, they aren’t very welcoming to a mage from Ferelden. Rhy’s had grown accustomed to it after a time, the majesty of the buildings turning to something sour. Like an old leather boot, too old to be used, yet still worn.
He spent an hour wandering and thirty minutes arguing with the merchant, all the while with a patient smile on his face. If you mess this up, it’s back to the White Spire... Just smile and nod.
On his way back to the consulate, Rhys found himself wishing he hadn’t taken a shortcut. A small square with yet more old buildings surrounding it. Something that may once have been a shop, eventually overrun by competition, now boarded up and he hopes condemned.
Three older boys stood before him. The leader of which glared daggers at him, arms crossed. He clicked his tongue and before Rhys could react, the other two had grabbed his arms and forced him back. Damn. There go the blasted salt chews!
For whatever indiscernible reason, he’d forgotten the entire situation. He wheezed as the leader of the three kicked his stomach. The two drop him as he keels forward, groaning and wincing with an arm around his abdomen. His spinning vision tried to make out what was coming next, but not fast enough to dodge or even try to block another boot to the side of his head.
He finally dropped to the ground all the way, curling into a ball as they kicked and showed no signs of stopping. He could feel his anger and pain growing until it formed in his hands. He lashed out, scalding one of the boys with blazing white fire. He staggered back and fell, but the other two responded in kind.
For all Rhys’ attempts to push them back with further flames, these boys seemed to know enough to manipulate it and send it right back to him. One of the two let out cracks of lightning, the sound ringing in Rhys’ ears. His muscles tensed, convulsed with the energy coursing through him. The other still bombarding him with fiery spells.
As if a miracle occurred, it all stopped. It was so sudden, Rhys thought maybe he had died. Instead, one of the guards had been called, and the boys pulled away from him. He felt the world around him spinning as if its rotations forgot to include him. He rolled onto his back, coughing and wincing, shielding himself and yelping as someone touched him.
The person in question, though, was not one of the boys. It was instead one of the guards, leaning down to see the damage. The last thing Rhys saw was the guard starting to lift their helmet, and the darkness smothered his mind before he could even see their face.

Hello! Welcome again! This is the second part of that tutorial. I’m sorry if this is getting too long, but it is a long work and I really don’t want to miss any step. / Olá! Bem vindo novamente! Esta é a segunda parte desse tutorial. Lamento se isso está ficando muito longo, mas é um trabalho longo e realmente não quero perder nenhuma etapa.
You can see the first part here. / Você pode ver a primeira parte aqui.
Tutorial under the cut! / Tutorial abaixo do corte!
Step 1 / Passo 1:
UV Mapping and Hat Chops! / Mapeamento UV e cortes de chapéus!
First of all, you WILL NEED, like the previous tutorial, for this step: / O que você VAI PRECISAR, como no último tutorial, para este passo:
Sims4Studio
Blender
Really Really basic experience with both / Experiência bem básica nos dois.
Tumblr media
1. Starting from the point where we stopped, export the mesh again, this will be necessary because, for some reason, the mesh changes according to the texture it is using in S4S. Let's use the texture of the first hair for UV mapping, so let's export the mesh as we use it. / Começando do ponto onde paramos, exporte a mesh novamente, isso será necessário pois, de certa forma, a mesh muda conforme a textura que ela está usando no S4S. Vamos usar a textura do primeiro cabelo para o mapeamento UV, então vamos exportar a mesh enquanto a usamos.
2. Open the new mesh in Blender and delete the two layers we made for hat chops, so we can work only with the GEOM 0002. After it, open the Edit Mode. / Abra a mesh nova no Blender e apague as duas camadas que fizemos para os cortes de chapéu para que possamos trabalhar apenas com o GEOM 0002. Depois disso, abra o Modo de Edição.
Tumblr media
3. Let's talk about the terror of some, but my biggest love, the UV Mapping. In arrow 1, we have the "Open", it is for you to open the texture you want. In this case, let's open the one in our hair in a little while. In arrow 2, we have a small pin. This is so that every time you select a piece of hair mesh, the texture does not reset, and I have no idea why this happens, so just activate it. In arrow 3, we have the Keep UV Synchronized. It will make the UV Map synchronized with your 3D image on the side (the one we've edited.) For example, a selected spot on the hair on the 3D screen will also be selected on the UV Map. In arrow 4, we have our UV map. It is who will move to the right place until we have a satisfactory texture. / Vamos falar sobre o terror de alguns, mas o meu maior amor, o Mapeamento UV. Na seta 1, temos o “Abrir”, ele serve para que você possa abrir a  textura que você quiser. No caso, vamos abrir a do nosso cabelo daqui a pouco.
Tumblr media
4. First, let's click "Open" and find our texture, give two clicks, and there is our texture under the map. Adjust the screens so that you can see the UV screen and the 3D screen. / Primeiramente, vamos clicar em “Abrir” e encontrar a nossa textura, dar dois cliques, e lá está nossa textura sob o mapa. Ajuste as telas para que você possa ver a tela do UV e a tela 3D.
Tumblr media
5. Keep the sync unselected so you can see only the piece you are moving. / Mantenha a sincronização não selecionada para que você possa ver apenas o pedaço que você está movendo.
Tips: Select in 3D (L above desired area), Select in UV (B and drag above points), Move (G), Size (S). Width (S, then X), Height (S, then Y)
Dicas: Selecionar no 3D (L acima da area desejada), Selecionar no UV (B e arrastar acima dos pontos), Mover (G), Tamanho (S). Largura (S, depois X), Altura (S, depois Y)
6. Try moving all pieces to specific areas of the texture, keeping them within the boundaries of the hair strands drawn so that the result is perfect. Use the tip’s shortcut keys and you'll be fine. / Tente mover Todos os pedaços para areas especificas da textura, mantendo eles dentro dos limites das mechas de cabelo desenhadas para que o resultado seja perfeito. Use as teclas de atalho da dica e se sairá bem.
Tumblr media
7. When you’re over with your UV mapping, you can just go to the object mode again to see your creation! Beautiful right? Was it thaaaat hard? No! It’s quite easy! Let’s start with the hat chops! / Quando você estiver pronto com seu mapeamento UV, basta ir ao modo de objeto novamente para ver sua criação! Linda né? Foi tãããão difícil? Não! É bem fácil! Vamos começar com os cortes de chapéu!
8. Repeat step 20 of the first tutorial creating the other two layers by pressing CTRL + D and modifying the GEOM again. Now let's understand a little of that. There are three GEOMs, 0002 is the whole hair cut, without hat. 0001 is the cut of the hats that are reasonably angled. 0000 is the cut of the straight hats. To get started, download here the example hat meshes that I have made available to make the job easier. Then, Make it as if you were adding a new object to the hair, in Append, and paste the two meshes of the hats. Thanks to @blogsimplesimmer for this part! / Repita o passo 20 do primeiro tutorial criando as outras duas camadas pressionando CTRL + D e modificando o GEOM novamente.
Tumblr media
9. Let’s start wih the straight chop (the dalmatian hat). Choose the GEOM 0000 hair mesh and lets go to EDIT MODE! Lets learn about bisecting. Push 5, then 3 to have the perfect side view like the picture above.
Tumblr media
10. Press A to select all hair, if necessary, press twice. Press the bisect button and choose a good point so that it is where the beam will go. In the case of the straight cut, the best point is what I am showing with the arrows, very close to the hair, you just need to aim now so that the orange line follows the line of the hat. (You can hide the layer from the other hat, I forgot to do this). After doing this, release and press F6, a window will open with two options to tick. Choose the option that will remove the top of the hair.
Tumblr media
11. You must have this mess now. But this is when we get to the best part. / Você deve ter essa bagunça agora. E é agora que vem a melhor parte.
Tumblr media
12. You must allow proportional editing now. This part is fun and does not need much explanation or images. Allow proportional editing and press S to change the size of the selected area and place it inside the hat. Before you start resizing, use the mouse wheel to scroll up and minimize the change area, this will only make the area you want to move. Just adjust everything so that it is inside the hat. If you need to, you can also use the Sculpt mode. / Você deve Permitir a edição proporcional agora.
Tumblr media
13. Here you can see that I finished with the 0000, the 0001 is the same process, but only a little more rotated. Don’t forget to delete the hat meshes after you finish with the geoms! / Aqui você pode ver que eu terminei com o 0000, o 0001 é o mesmo processo, mas só um pouco mais torto. Não se esqueça de deletar as meshes dos chapéus depois de terminar com os geoms!
14. When you’re done, activate all hair layers again and save the file as "Lod0", LODs time! Thanks to @simmerstesia for the lods tutorial! / Quando terminar, ative todas as camadas dos cabelos novamente e salve o arquivo como “Lod0″, hora dos LODs! Obrigada @simmerstesia pelo tutorial de LODs!
Tumblr media
15. Look for the screwdriver in the menu under the layers screen and select it, then remove the window that will already be there, it is a useless modification. Then, add a new modification called decimate. This is the modification that will degrade the quality of the hair so that it is compatible with the Lods. For Lod1, have something between 0.8 and 0.7. Lod2, 0.6 and 0.5. Lod3, 0.5 and 0.4. Do this for all layers and save them all with the names of lods, so the location is simpler. Soon after, we can permanently close Blender.
16. Let’s get back to our final package and start importing the meshes! Go in each lod and import everything in S4S. Once you’re done, we can start with the colors! If you opted to use the original colors, your job is done! save your package and put it in your game.
We finished this stage! For the rest, I'd like to know if you're going to want a tutorial on how to use actions and export them to S4S, I'm waiting for the answer! Love you! / Terminamos este estágio! Para o resto, eu gostaria de saber se vocês vão querer um tutorial de como usar ações e exportar elas para o S4S, aguardo a resposta! Amo vocês!
