my top three ships for the character.

snowbird ( winter / qrow. ) ironwinter ( winter / ironwood. ) pfennig ( winter / penny. )

my three least favourite ships for the character.

schneewood forest ( winter / robyn. ) cinwin ( winter / cinder. ) winter / any of the happy huntresses.

my biggest criticism for the character.

the handling of her story arc around the maiden powers. i don't know how they managed to take winter explicitly saying that she chose this, that she wanted this power & wanted to help & didn't want fria to be hurt, that weiss can't take away her agency & blame ironwood for winter's decisions — only for the writers to then double back on that & go in fact, no, everything was ironwood's fault, winter never wanted this & she's a poor abused baby.

women having agency & not being infantilized? not in my d tier texas anime.

my favourite thing about the character.

her strength. winter embodies not only physical strength but emotional strength, especially as an abuse survivor. it's so important to me that while yes, she should be criticized for only focusing on one of her siblings while the other was still being abused, that she isn't blamed for running away. she isn't blamed for seeking a way out in the military & owning her name. i think there's a lot of depth in winter that could've been explored, like her feelings about her mother, the abuse she suffered & her siblings, any guilt or shame she might feel for leaving them even when it wasn't in her control.

a headcanon i have about them.

winter is an amazing dancer, which feeds into her fighting style, especially the bird / crane pose she did in volume three. however with all of jacques focus being on weiss's talents, & winter herself being repeatedly forced into oppressive feeling dance functions, she gave up that passion. sometime in her late 20s / early 30s, she begins to rediscover that passion & love for dancing.

what i would change about them if i was making a re-write.

don't erase her personal agency & choices in order to villanize ironwood / deify penny. give winter the maiden powers at the end of volume 7 & then dive deeper into her split loyalties between her sister, her brother or her leader; without having to demonize her or any of those parties. it is possible & can be done, mkek were just lazy & can't stand autonomous women smh.

what i think of their character allusion and what (if anything) i would change about it.

not jadis. no shade to the creator of that theory but it’s ridiculous & makes no sense.

however, keeping in with the theme of everyone but jacques having a snow white allusion — frame winter as the huntsman but with the dynamics of the schnee family. willow, as the evil queen, plays her children off against each other in her apathy towards them but with her negligence & jacques abuse; winter refuses to play the game that narcissistic parents play. she won’t sacrifice her siblings for their wants, so she lies & she leaves.

it could be further played into with more of a lean into winter being a huntress, & her enjoying hunting as a child — playing those games with her siblings. her being a grimm hunting specialist too, or specializing in hunting atlas’s enemies, considering her envoy to mistral in v5, would also strengthen this as an allusion.

Dynamic asks! Qrow or Clover with Robyn

All good! I’ll do Robyn!

Favorite thing about them: I really like how Robyn is allowed to be outspoken without her being a woman ever factoring in. Her personality type isn’t always received super well for female characters, but the show never brings gender into it. Also she likes to cause problems on purpose and I think that’s fun.

Least favorite thing about them: I like the flaws that she was given, so my main point here is that we haven’t gotten to see a ton of her fighting style yet. I’d like to see more of Robyn outside of a support role.

Favorite line: “Where’s that smile now?”

brOTP: Robyn & Qrow or Robyn & Clover. I love the idea of Robyn and Qrow having a sibling dynamic with their matching misspelled bird names and I think Robyn and Clover could have some fun interactions of getting on their each other’s nerves but in a teasing way.

OTP: Springthyme! We haven’t gotten much yet but they had a few cute moments and I’d love to see more.

nOTP: The two brOTPs I mentioned since I prefer them as platonic dynamics and outside of that, for ships that I’ve seen, Robyn/R-aven.

Random headcanon: She ends up acting like a cool, big sister to most of the younger cast. The type that makes sure you take care of your mental health but also encourages you to be gay and do crimes.

Unpopular opinion: Unpopular is subjective here, but I think Robyn was in the right to be wary after the arrest order. She’s known as Mantle’s hometown hero; it doesn’t take much to realize she’d go against the plan to raise Atlas and leave Mantle behind. Her also being arrested was inevitable.

Song I associate with them: I think “Castle” by Halsey fits her vibes.

Favorite picture of them: I have an actual thread just of pictures of her but

I think I’m picking this one since it’s one of her most vulnerable moments.
