Human Rights and Veganism
I speak frequently about my passion for human rights and how this is often dismissed by nonvegans on the basis of me being vegan, and seeing how many other vegans have related to my struggles, I thought it would be useful to compile a list of the human rights issues animal agriculture is responsible for and/or perpetuates. This will not be a list that 100% encapsulates the extent to which human rights are violated by these industries, but I think it is still a really great introduction, if nothing else, to how ubiquitous the oppressive nature of animal agriculture is. This post will be mostly guided by links to sources and some key quotes and phrases from those sources.
1. Slaughterhouse Workers
Slaughterhouse workers are one of, if not the most, abused, mistreated, and neglected groups of workers to exist within western countries. The traumatization they face as a result of their job is often ignored by almost everyone who is not vegan or who does not research the topic.
“A Call to Action: Psychological Harm in Slaughterhouse Workers“
“These workers perform a job that, by its very nature, puts them at risk of psychological disorder and pathological sadism. This risk emerges from a combination of many factors of slaughterhouse work, one of which is the stressful environment that slaughtering creates. A large portion of this stress comes from the exceptionally high rates of injury among the workers.
“However, slaughterhouse work is unique among major industries due to its innate violence...one of the most prominent studies investigated the impact of having a slaughterhouse in a community on crime rates within that community, using this as a metric for psychological health... Though the industries they used for comparison were nearly identical in other predictors of changes in crime (namely worker demographics, potential to create social disorganization, and effect on unemployment in the surrounding areas), slaughterhouses outstripped all others in the effect they had on crime. They led not only to a larger increase in overall crime, but, disturbingly, disproportionate increases in violent crime and sexual crime.
“Creating and sustaining oneself with “good” moral character and having another self that can mechanically end lives for hours each day not only serves as another source of psychological stress for workers, but exposes workers to the risk that their pathologically un-empathetic work selves will slip into their community lives. This is another explanation for the “spillover” that affects slaughterhouse workers’ minds and communities.
“Living with the knowledge of their actions causes symptoms similar to those of individuals who are recipients of trauma: substance abuse, anxiety issues, depression, and dissociation from reality.
(Testimonies from slaughterhouse workers): “And then it gets to a point where you’re at a daydream stage. Where you can think about everything else and still do your job. You become emotionally dead.”
“So a lot of guys at Morrell [a major slaughterhouse] just drink and drug their problems away. Some of them end up abusing their spouses because they can’t get rid of the feelings. They leave work with this attitude and they go down to the bar to forget.”
Confessions of a slaughterhouse worker
There are things, though, that have the power to shatter the numbness. For me, it was the heads.
At the end of the slaughter line there was a huge skip, and it was filled with hundreds of cows' heads. Each one of them had been flayed, with all of the saleable flesh removed. But one thing was still attached - their eyeballs.
Whenever I walked past that skip, I couldn't help but feel like I had hundreds of pairs of eyes watching me. Some of them were accusing, knowing that I'd participated in their deaths. Others seemed to be pleading, as if there were some way I could go back in time and save them. It was disgusting, terrifying and heart-breaking, all at the same time. It made me feel guilty."
I know things like this bothered the other workers, too. I'll never forget the day, after I'd been at the abattoir for a few months, when one of the lads cut into a freshly killed cow to gut her - and out fell the foetus of a calf. She was pregnant. He immediately started shouting and throwing his arms about.
I took him into a meeting room to calm him down - and all he could say was, "It's just not right, it's not right," over and over again. These were hard men, and they rarely showed any emotion. But I could see tears prickling his eyes." I remember one day in particular, when I'd been there for about a year or so, when we had to slaughter five calves at the same time.
We tried to keep them within the rails of the pens, but they were so small and bony that they could easily skip out and trot around, slightly wobbly on their newly born legs. They sniffed us, like puppies, because they were young and curious. Some of the boys and I stroked them, and they suckled our fingers.
When the time came to kill them, it was tough, both emotionally and physically. Slaughterhouses are designed for slaughtering really large animals, so the stun boxes are normally just about the right size to hold a cow that weighs about a tonne. When we put the first calf in, it only came about a quarter of a way up the box, if that. We put all five calves in at once. Then we killed them.
America’s Slaughterhouses Aren’t Just Killing Animals
“I’ve seen bleeders, and they’re gushing because they got hit [by a knife] right in the vein, and I mean, they’re almost passing out,” she said, “and here comes the supply guy again, with the bleach, to clean the blood off the floor, but the chain never stops. It never stops.”
In Texas, where private employers are not required to carry workers’-compensation insurance, Tyson has opted out of the state system completely. When a worker gets injured at the Tyson beef slaughterhouse in Amarillo, Texas, in order to get medical care from the company, that person must first sign a document saying:
I hereby voluntarily release, waive, and forever give up all my rights, claims, and causes of action, whether now existing or arising in the future, that I may have against the company, Tyson Foods, Inc., and their parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies and all of their officers, directors, owners, employees, and agents that arise out of or are in any way related to injuries (including a subsequent or resulting death) sustained in the course of my employment with the company.
The pressure to sign was enormous. When a worker named Duane Mullin had both of his hands crushed in a hammer mill at the Amarillo slaughterhouse now owned by Tyson, a manager employed by its previous owner persuaded him to sign the waiver with a pen held in his teeth.
'We're modern slaves': How meat plant workers became the new frontline in Covid-19 war
The company is now measuring workers’ temperatures as they report for work, and began supplying surgical facemasks, but, according to Fields and workers interviewed by the Guardian, Tyson continues to suppress information on employees who have tested positive for Covid-19.”
One worker, a central American migrant who spoke on condition of anonymity to protect her job, told the Guardian that the company was not enforcing social distancing. 'We are all given bathroom breaks at the same time and there are hundreds of us waiting to use them. There are only seven bathrooms,' she said. 'They [Tyson] don’t care about the worker. They don’t care if we get sick.' A spokesman for Tyson said the company was taking 'several measures' to allow social distancing but did not address the bathroom break allegations."
One African American worker at a Koch facility that had been targeted by Ice, spoke to the Guardian on condition of anonymity. He alleged that while Koch had recently begun taking workers’ temperatures before shifts, they had also withheld details of any workers who contracted the virus. 'They ain’t offering nobody no disability, no unemployment, no time off,' the worker said. 'I just keep my hands washed up, my face covered up, my whole body covered, and I pray to myself and hope I don’t catch it. The truth is there’s a chance that everybody in [here] will catch it.'
The sociologist Lourdes Gouveia has studied the meatpacking industry for three decades and said the Covid-19 outbreak is simply highlighting again the dangerous conditions in processing plants. Gouveia said the industry has perfected a formula which allows it to maximize profit while producing relatively safe meat by resisting regulations and utilizing low cost, mostly immigrant, labor in unsafe conditions. 'All of these elements are of a highly perfected formula or maximizing profits that is unlikely to change fundamentally,' Gouveia said."
2. Environmental Racism and Classism
Animal agriculture, and factory farms specifically, tend to locate their facilities near poor communities (often black or Hispanic) who do not have the financial means to take them to court over the ways in which these farms affect their health and wellbeing.
How Swine in North Carolina Affects real People | René Miller Excerpt
“When you go back and you look at where these hog facilities are located, there’s a disproportionate number of them that are located near communities of color, low income communities. It is definitely a human rights issue.”
“Now see, if you lived here, and saw the way they do, you wouldn’t eat no pork. I don’t eat bacon, because I know where it comes from. When they die, they go into a box, and they decompose because they swell in the heat. A truck come and pick them up, take them to the processing plant in Roseo, ground them up into feed, and feed them back to the hogs.
“It hits you right in the face. Smell like something that you had never smell before. Smell worse than a dead body.”
“When we go to the funeral, he used the spray. If we wanna have a cookout on Sunday, he’ll spray. He always sprays Sunday.
“Do you think it’s also a civil rights issue?”
“Yes, I do.”
When We’re Dead and Buried, Our Bones Will Keep Hurting
Like many other hazardous and exhausting low-wage industries in the United States, this work depends on the labor of America’s most marginalized communities. Most workers in the industry are people of color, many are women, and nearly one-third are immigrants.
In 1983, wages for workers in the meat and poultry industry fell, for the first time, below the national average for manufacturing work; in 1985, they were 15 percent lower; in 2002, they were 24 percent lower; today, they are 44 percent lower. Workers earn, on average, less than $15 an hour.
Jobs in the meat and poultry industry have long been a starting point for many groups of new immigrants to the United States as many positions require little formal education, experience, or English-language skills. In 2015, nearly 30 percent of meat and poultry workers were foreign-born non-citizens—about three times more than the percentage of manufacturing workers nationally.
Even immigrants with work authorization can remain vulnerable to coercion from employers, as many are not aware of their workplace rights, may not be familiar with technical terms in English, or are otherwise hesitant to navigate the complex, and potentially costly, procedures to vindicate their rights. The result is a significant part of the low-wage workforce who are less likely to report workplace abuses or even injuries, and are therefore more easily exploitable than US citizens, for fear of their employers’ power to fundamentally disrupt their lives and the lives of their families. “Us workers are afraid to lose our job,” said Rebecca G., an immigrant worker at a poultry plant in Arkansas. “[P]eople don't speak up or say what's wrong about the chemicals, or the speed of the line, or the discrimination.”
3. The displacement and murder of indigenous peoples
The Companies Behind the Burning of the Amazon
The burning of the Amazon and the darkening of skies from Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, have captured the world’s conscience. Much of the blame for the fires has rightly fallen on Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for directly encouraging the burning of forests and the seizure of Indigenous Peoples’ lands.
But the incentive for the destruction comes from large-scale international meat and soy animal feed companies like JBS and Cargill, and the global brands like Stop & Shop, Costco, McDonald’s, Walmart/Asda, and Sysco that buy from them and sell to the public. It is these companies that are creating the international demand that finances the fires and deforestation.
The transnational nature of their impact can be seen in the current crisis. Their destruction is not confined to Brazil. Just over the border, in the Bolivian Amazon, 2.5 million acres have burned, largely to clear land for new cattle and soy animal feed plantations, in just a few weeks. Paraguay is experiencing similar devastation.
After years of remarkably successful conservation initiatives that cut Brazil’s deforestation rate by two-thirds, Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro has reopened the doors to rampant destruction as a favor to the agribusiness lobby that backs him. That industry is accountable for the atmosphere of lawlessness, deforestation, fires, and the murder of Indigenous peoples that followed. According to data released by Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE), deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon in July 2019 increased 278 percent over the previous July. Bolsonaro responded to this news by firing the head of the INPE.
I would like to close this post by saying that I understand this may leave nonvegans with some questions; What can consumers do about this? Should consumers be expected to do anything, or would that simply be misplacing the blame for these things? Aren’t all industries awful in similar ways since there is no ethical consumption under capitalism? If you have these questions, I am more than happy to engage in a good-faith conversation about them. The purpose of this post, however, is not to answer such inquiries. I made this purely to raise awareness about these issues because the only people I ever see discuss them are vegans, and these are extremely important topics that I think deserve far more attention than they receive.

Shattered Hearts, Fractured Lungs
(Chapter Two; Warnings for: school shooting, violence, language, and heart failure; you can find the first chapter here)
Emily Prentiss just wants to do her job but a messy case sends her sprawling into the arms of a dying man with a toddler and his weird, broken family.
“It’s been very rare to have known you, very strange and wonderful” --F. Scott Fitzgerald
She comes back the very next day.
It’s about noon and she’d seen the blonde one-- the happy one, uhm… Penelope! Emily had watched Penelope pull up in the driveway at about eleven thirty. So, she knows someone’s home over there but when she steps out on her porch she’s not expecting him to be sitting in that rickety old rocking chair.
Idiot-- because she’d seen, from her kitchen window, Penelope helping him outside. The woman was talking his poor ear off.
The icing on the cake, of course, is that she was creating a dialogue for what to say when she got over there.
Out loud.
So, he definitely heard her talking to herself like a crazy person.
“Hey,” she says lamely, stopping in her tracks. Now she’s in a really bad spot. He looks like he didn’t sleep last night and definitely not in a talking mood with the oxygen mask over his face.
Of course, she can’t really know that he didn’t sleep last night. Spent the whole night breathlessly fighting with Dave over his own health and how he was feeling. Of course, like shit is the truth but he’s fighting the clock and he doesn’t want to go to the hospital over a little labored breathing. Now he’s paying the price. He couldn’t even stand on his own this morning. He’d laid in bed until Garcia got here and been forced to ask her to help.
Life is slowly becoming unbearable.
“I need...” she blows out an unsteady breath. She has to clench her hands to stop them from trembling.  “Do you have any bananas?”
Idiot.
Stupid fucking idiot.
But he nods. It takes him a moment but he reaches up and pulls the mask off his face, pinning it against his chest. “Just go…” he curses himself, mentally for his inability to do something as simple as breathing. Why should heart failure come with not only a permanent ache in his chest but also the double hit to the lungs? Anatomy is so stupid.
“Ask Pen,” he rasps, gesturing with a head tilt that he means for her to go inside. “She’ll get you one.” He knows there’s bananas in there because Garcia always brings him some from the store. He used to eat one every morning with his coffee. Now he can’t even stomach the thought.
Insult to injury is the awkward silence that passes between them as Emily steps into his house.
She comes out a moment later, Penelope trailing her. She shows him the bananas from last week. They’re pretty brown but she’s smiling. “Actually,” Emily says, stepping out and smiling between Garcia and Hotch, “the recipes Derek’s mom’s. She, uh, sent it my way to keep me from getting bored.”
Garcia nods and Hotch rolls his eyes fondly. He’d spent the last half an hour listening to Garcia go on and on about Emily’s sexy little partner Derek Morgan. And, as insufferable as it had been, he had seen the signals the two of them were sharing. The good thing is that he was visibly not the only person unsettled by Garcia and Morgan’s flirting.
Reid really hated it.
“She’s making banana bread,” Garcia tells Hotch, bumping her hip against him.
Emily blushes, “yeah but…” She twists her shoe uncomfortably in the dirt. “I’m not that great of a baker.”
Garcia shakes her head, “don’t be so hard on yourself! I’m sure it’ll be great.” She grins, “besides if you need any help Hotch and I are more than willing to be unbiased judges or helpers.”
Emily could laugh at the face Hotch makes. He most certainly does not want that. She shakes her head, “I’m gonna go throw these in. If they’re good, I’ll send you a piece?”
Garcia nods and they watch in silence as Emily goes back to the house.
The banana bread must not turn out so great because she never brings a piece over but the next day she knocks on his door with a plate of pancakes.
He’s in a sweatshirt-- Georgetown’s logo slapped on the front and worn with age-- and a pair of grey sweats that make her cheeks flush a little. Nice, idiot, she thinks as she explains she used the leftover bananas to make pancakes and wondered if he’d like some. Mercifully, he either ignores or doesn’t see her making intense eye contact with the floor so she doesn’t look anywhere near his hips.
After that, they form a strange pattern of her showing up with various baked goods or other types of gifts and such.
Otherwise, they’d both sit in their homes all alone with nothing but the silence. Or, rather, he’d have the silence because she is very loud. He likes to sit on the porch and listen to her blasting music through her house. Occasionally, he knows a song but mostly he just likes the way the rest of the neighborhood scowls at their houses.
It’s about nine in the morning when Hotch hears the knocking at his door. For a solid moment, he considers not even answering the door. There’s about a ninety percent chance whoever it is he doesn’t want to talk to. The number of people who have sent cards, and food, and made weird phone calls is numerous. So, if they don’t have the key to his front door or the familiarity to just come busting in-- it’s not worth his time.
Besides, he’s feeling grumpy and he’d like to just wallow for a moment… in peace, alone.
But then the door does bust open.
Hes trying to read the paperwork either the hospital or the school sent-- obviously, he hasn’t gotten very far into it if he can’t even tell what the papers are for. All that he knows is there are vibrantly colored sticky notes where his signature should be. But he isn’t just going to go singing his name willy-nilly. He’s not that far gone.
He looks up and Emily Prentiss is blindly-- her hands are over her eyes for some reason-- trampling through his living room.
“Can I help you?”
At the sound of his voice, her head jerks up. Two paired fingers separate and she looks just like one of his students as she lowers her hands and grins at him. It’s an awkward little grin but it’s not bad. “Uh,” she motions behind her to the door. “Sorry about that… Dave, he, uh, he told me that you’d be home all day and you are home all day and if I needed anything to just--” she grimaces as if she’s just considered how strange this is. “You didn’t answer and Dave said you always answer and you do and I didn’t want something to be wrong…”
She stops talking.
Mercifully.
Hotch grunts, “I do, normally.”
Somehow, the only good thing to come out of the last month is that Hotch gets to spend his days at home. Besides the drastic rise in homeschoolers in their town, the school had been gracious enough to handle his disability checks. Of course, everyone had smiled and thanked him for what he’d done to save his kids but Hotch is still very aware of the lawsuits and trouble David Rossi would cause if everything hadn’t gone smoothly.
Being the semi-famous author of a very successful line of children’s books earns Dave that power. Although, Hotch has seen him use it for good and for… well, mostly sex.
The downside is he gets pretty lonely at the house.
Jack goes to his aunts. Haley’s sister Jessica has been a huge help over the last few weeks. Reeling from the loss of her sister, she’d been more than happy to keep her only family close. Even if it’s just her ex-brother-in-law and nephew. Not that Aaron and Jessica’s relationship was severed just because of Haley and Aaron’s divorce.
It had been painful but not ugly. It had never been about the devotion they felt for one another or even the love.
Life just gets complicated.
A few teachers had still managed to get some more leave time and with Hotch’s heart actively failing, Reid, Garcia, and Rossi are on the receiving end of lots of understanding when it comes to asking for time off. They have a schedule set into place now: Garcia brings him lunch, Reid picks up Jack, and Dave brings stuff to make dinner for all of them.
It’s simple but affected. Daily and boring.
“Now this is going to make me sound like a dumbass--”
He’s known Emily Prentiss for all of week. He excludes the school thing from memory and the timeline. It’s better for his mental health-- which isn’t doing much better than his physical health if he’s being honest. The problem is, the woman is kind of crazy. It’s in an endearing kind of way but still.
Now he’s sitting in her living room. She’d come barging into his house just thirty minutes before, a hand over her eyes. He’d had to listen to her awful explanation for that while slowly and painfully making his way across the whole five feet separating their houses. The hand over her eyes had been in case he was naked because she may invade his personal space but she really doesn’t want to see his junk.
He’s not entirely sure where this comfort of hers is coming from. All he does know is that Dave has swindled his way into every aspect of Hotch’s life and now Hotch has his neighbor’s phone number. It’s for “emergencies”, of course. In case Hotch, God forbid, needs help and his only contact is his batshit neighbor.
“I mean it, Aaron,” she’s standing right in front of him with two spices in her hands. “It’s really going to make me sound like a dumbass here but what exactly is the difference between Cinnamon and Nutmeg?”
God, she’s crazy but she’s funny and hasn’t passed any judgement on his inability to get dressed. Just like now while she’s standing in a simple, well-loved tanktop and work jeans and he sits in his flannel pajama bottoms and a Hanes t-shirt that’s seen better days five years ago.
But they kind of passed lots of mile markers for judgment a long time ago. As in, last week.
He’d watched in silence as she emptied the contents of her stomach over the railing of his porch and she’d put pressure on the bullet wound that tore through his side. It’s why it was so easy for her to, after that night on the porch, to bring over a plate of pancakes and offer to grab him stuff from the store. Of course, he’d told her he was good and he, mostly, was.
Which is in direct consequence for why he’s here now.
“Nutmeg tastes like Christmas,” he explains because he has no idea how he’s supposed to explain this to a grown woman. “What are you making?” He’s suddenly very worried for whatever dish she’s making. Especially if she put nutmeg where cinnamon is supposed to be. It’s freaking September and, if he’s being honest, he really hates Christmas. That might make him too biased to figure out if she’s really messed up though.
She grimaces at the containers in her hand. She pulls her lip into her mouth and mumbles, “apple pie.”
His grimace is too much and if she weren’t so bummed with the aspect that her apple pie is most definitely ruined she might laugh. His accent is thick enough for her to comfortably assume he’s from the south not to mention he’s got a lot of that southern gentlemen charm.
“How much nutmeg did you use?”
Her face says it all.
He places both his fist on the sides of the chair and forces himself onto his feet. If Emily weren’t standing in silent horror that he might fall over or pass out or a hundred other things she might lend a hand. Then again, they haven’t established those boundaries and she can’t flawlessly just know like Dave does.
“Let me see the damage,” he grumbles but she can see that he’s not actually mad; he's just wary of what she’s done. He’s strange in that way. For a man who has made a career around working with children, he’s got a horrible resting face.
She lets him set the place, pointing him in the direction of the kitchen. It’s only a few feet but they make it two-steps before she decides she can’t do this silently watching thing. “Do you--” she offers him her forearm, the same way she’d seen Dave do the other afternoon.
He scowls at her arm but after a moment, he takes her hand. His skin is startlingly cold and his hand trembles until he settles his grip. It’s surprisingly easy and she doesn’t think much of it. At least he’s not dead weight to lug around. She’s had plenty of people hang onto her, she doesn’t even mind this.
“I think I might have used too much nutmeg,” she concludes before he can see the damage and rule her incompetant. It’s a warning.
He glances at her out of the corner of his eye… too late for the incompetant thing, she decides. He already thinks she’s a moron.
Rightfully so but still…
She’d known he was tall. It’s not that hard to see but as she’s standing beside him, his body pulled in and hunched over, he’s still towering over quite a bit. He’s a big man and he smells nice so he’s got a lot going for him. Too bad about the heart thing because he’s kinda cute.
“That’s all…” she moves him to the kitchen table and brings the pie to him. She really doesn’t want him falling in her kitchen. Dave likes her and she’d like to keep it that way. Besides, there would be so many awful and weird questions to answer if she had to take him to the hospital.
And now he’s sitting in horror at this pie in front of him.
“That’s all…” he repeats himself, shaking his head in disbelief. The pie is covered in a brown powder and he’s slowly processing that it’s all nutmeg.
She grimaces and nods.
He looks up at her, mouth open but disbelief making it impossible for him to say anything. He’s seen a lot of weird things. Preschoolers are… they’re a piece of work but this is testing every bit of training he has.
“It’s bad, isn’t it?”
He nods, “definitely.”
Huffing in a way that he recognizes from dealing with one too many headstrong four-year-olds, she places her fist on her hips. She scowls down at the pie. It’s cooked and it smells okay but if she’s been too generous with the nutmeg there’s no way that’s going to taste good. After a moment she hums and turns around, pulling out two forks she comes right back to the table.
“Well,” she says with a tilt of her head, “christmas apples can’t be that bad, right?”
He takes the fork being offered to him with no interest whatsoever in eating this pie but it's kind of funny and he’s having a good time. Together they break the baked dough and get a bite- sized piece. He’s fairly adamant but somehow it’s got nothing to do with his tricky stomach or the fact that he hasn’t been able to keep down much besides water and saltine crackers. It’s going to taste like shit and it’s exciting.
Emily chokes on her bite coughing and grimacing as she rushes to spit it out. To his credit, Hotch swallows his bite. “That was honestly the worst apple pie I’ve ever tasted,” he tells her, honestly.
She laughs and that feels so good. She hasn’t laughed in a long time.
He shrugs, “I’m not gonna lie to you.”
She tosses her fork on the table and shakes her head at the pie. So much for that.
“How exactly--” he bites down on the wave of pain that rocks through his body as he forces his legs underneath him. He stands, trembling and waving slightly with the effort it takes. “Why were you making apple pie so early in the day?”
Emily is still frowning at the pie so she doesn’t even look up at him. “Bored,” she mumbles. She’s upset about her pie. Damn… this whole nutmeg vs cinnamon thing is stupid. They look exactly the same so they should taste the same, right?
“Maybe you should try something else,” Hotch says, one hand still keeping his balance on the table. “Baking just doesn’t…”
Emily frowns at him, “I like baking, though!”
Hotch looks away, tilting his head and raising an eyebrow. “Baking doesn’t like you,” he mumbles.
She smacks his shoulder and he chuckles-- this isn’t the first failed attempt of her’s he’s tried. There was the cookies from Monday (that were burnt on the bottom and raw on top) and the banana bread he’d only seen but-- they could have killed a lesser man let alone him and his broken heart.
“Maybe I can try cooking,” she proposes.
He shakes his head, “are you gonna make me eat that too?”
She clicks her tongue, faking offense. “What, are you afraid?”
He smiles and it takes her breath away. He’s got high, sharp cheekbones and when he’s not carrying so much tension in his shoulders it’s so much easier to appreciate just how soft his dark hair looks. Her neighbor is hot. She’s not sure if he knows that though.
“A little,” he admits playfully, “but maybe you’ll be better at cooking than you are baking.”
She crosses her arms and scowls down at her pie. “I don’t think it’s going to take a lot to be better at cooking than baking.”
He makes a soft sound, “you said it, not me.”
She shakes her head at him but there he is smiling again. She can’t even be mad. “Maybe I’ll make dinner,” she proposes, tucking her hands under her armpits as she thinks. “Are you interested?”
Honestly, no but he doesn’t want to pass up on hanging out with her. So he nods.
“Six o’clock should be enough time to cook something, right?”
Jesus, she’s going to kill him.
“Why don’t I come over and help?”
Oh, she hadn’t thought of that. She nods, “okay. You wanna come over at three, then?”
It’s dangerous, without a shred of doubt there, but his heart does this little flutter. “Uh,” he has to clear his throat. “Yeah, sounds like a plan.”
Except three rolls around he’s a no show. Three turns into three-thirty and she’s not trying to be a buzzkill but the recipe calls for caramelized onions and she has no idea what that means but she hopes it doesn’t mean what she thinks it does. Carmel on onions? Sounds disgusting.
“Knock, knock?” She’s already barged into his house once today so it really shouldn’t be that big of a deal but something doesn’t feel right. She can’t shake it and she certainly can’t just… leave. “Hotch?” God, she hopes he’s just in the bathroom.
He isn’t.
“You okay?” she falls to her knees beside him. She’d never been this far into his house. Mostly, she’d never passed the living room but now she’s kneeling in his hallway and can see his bedroom from here. As much as she’d like to evaluate that-- because the space is strangely neat and God, who knew the bare minimum of a clean room was such a perfect green flag--
Right--
He shakes his head.
Oh.
“Should…” she knows he hates the hospital, who doesn’t? But… he’s gasping for breath on the floor, his pale hand clutching at his chest. The sight is very overwhelming and hurting her deeply because it’s bringing feelings back that she thought were getting better. “Do I need to call--”
To the school and to the blood pooling between their bodies.
He nods. He’s terrified but just seeing Emily brings some strange comfort. Her and her awful cooking might just get him through this. He won’t die on this floor. Not on this ugly ass rug Dave made him put down.
The ambulance comes, bounding the sirens shrill sound up and down the block. Making a spectacle out of an awful experience.
He winces when the IV goes in and she just stands, bouncing from foot-to-foot awkwardly watching. It’s not until he’s on the gurney, fighting the drugs rushing through his system. “You can come,” he rasps but no one can hear him clearly from behind the masks. Reaching up to pull it away, several hands swat his hand away and he makes a grunted, annoyed sound at hte back fo his throat.
An EMT leans over and calms him back down before Hotch starts trying to fight his way back up into danger. “Easy, buddy.” The EMT pushes on Hotch’s shoulders and it's not a lot of force but Hotch isn’t strong enough to fight it. “The pretty lady can come, okay? Just settle down.”
She stays with him and tells herself it’s because she doesn’t want him hurting himself but she really doesn’t want to leave his side until she knows he’s going to be okay. There’s no hand holding because they’re still at the point where they smack shoulders and stand feet apart but they’ve only known one another for a week and-- Emily can’t fathom what she’s supposed to do if he dies in the back of this shitty ambulance.
“Can you--” the EMTs give him something that nearly knocks him out on the spot but his breathing gets better and he stops gasping and wheezing. He just lays supine on the gurney. Limp. “Dave?” He can’t keep his eyes open but he hears Emily make what he thinks are words of confirmation but his sentence didn't exactly make sense so maybe she didn't understand him.
He’s pulled under by the warmth spreading through his limbs before he can repeat himself or worry with it.
“You can’t go back there, baby.”
Emily blinks and there’s an older woman stopping Emily’s zombie-like march beside the gurney as they rush Hotch off to the side. She can’t tear her eyes off of him. Watching numbly as they cut his shirt down the middle and start to attach to electrodes to his alarmingly pale chest.
Her hands are trembling as she pulls her phone out of her pocket. “Dave?” she’s breathless with the anxiety swelling in her own chest. “I’m so sorry--” and she’s crying. Why? He’s not her friend? He’s her neighbor who she’s known for a whole freaking week and yet-- And she can’t deal with Dave being mad either. But he isn’t.
The minute he steps into the hospital, he comes right up to and pulls her into a hug. She sobs into his arms and he lets her because he’s seen Aaron this bad before. He knows it’s unnerving.
“Do you have any news?” Dave asks her and she shakes her head. He squeezes her arm and smiles at her tear-stained face. “I’ll be right back, okay? They know my face, I might be able to wrangle some news out of one of the nurses.”
She nods her head and watches dejectedly as he walks away.
Aaron had told her that Rossi had slept with many nurses while he was in the hospital. She’s thinking about the way he’d smiled when he told her that when she falls into the waiting rooms stiff chairs.

EXCLUSIVE interview with Shawna from War on Women
Tumblr media
I’m so excited that a conversation with Shawna Potter of War on Women about which merch top would fit me best turned into such a fantastic Q&A. She is one of my idols, both as a frontwoman and an author/activist, and has so many interesting points to make about being a women in the music industry. Read to the end to find out how you can buy her book (which you SHOULD because it’s GREAT).
How important is being a DIY band to you? How has that changed as you have gathered fans along the way and got bigger? I don’t think bands have much of a choice in being DIY or not, unless they are working from a trust fund or get that kind of instant success that invites you into the industry (which is rare, considering how many bands exist). So the idea is if we want to play, we gotta make it happen. We make the decisions, but honestly we get a lot of help that enables us to accomplish what we want and still keep our day jobs when we’re not on tour. DIY sometimes means doing it together. After years and years and years of booking my own tours, the second I could get WOW a booking agent I jumped on the chance. So does that mean we’re not DIY? I don’t know.. But Margie at Do It Booking has enabled us to play in front of crowds we never would have otherwise, to tour with bands we respect and admire, and for us the goal of this band has always been to present a feminist perspective to anyone listening. But we don’t have a manager, we don’t have a major label pushing us into a direction that doesn’t feel natural, and we don’t do anything we don’t want to do. I guess the idea is if any of that changes, we just have to work at making sure we are still in control of our sound and our message.
I am so excited to read your book! When did you start thinking about writing it? How did it feel to have all the overwhelmingly positive responses? Any plans for more writing/other creative projects besides music? I’m excited for you to read it! After six years of conducting safer space trainings, I realized I was repeating myself – so why not write it all down in a book? That way, more people have access, it’s cheaper than paying for a workshop, and the tactics can spread farther than I can travel. I am so glad people are embracing my book as the definitive guide for creating safer spaces. It gathers tons of information and stories and science to present the basics from a number of perspectives, in a non-academic and actionable way. Writing a book is hard, so of course I have no plans to do it again unless I have something solid to say. I am very happy to present this ideas as far and wide as I can for the time being. (If anyone wants to book me for an online training, visit shawnapotter.com)
Tumblr media
Sorry to bring this up, but… How has coronavirus affected your band’s plans? Do you think it’s affecting womxn musicians more? If so, how? Well obviously all our tours for 2020 have been cancelled. That was a blow, but we’re dealing with it and readjusting. We all have to hustle and find work or get on unemployment, and that’s not very easy for us to do as a band, you know? So having to isolate physically means we have to work hard to not feel isolated emotionally. We are lucky that we were able to continue with our plans to record a new album, which helps us feel productive. If we couldn’t do that either, I think I’d be much more bummed out. I don’t know about which musicians are being affected more right now, I think any big bad event like this will always hit women, people of color, and other marginalized groups harder. A lot of touring musicians are freelancers with no job security or health care, so that’s really scary right now. Of course, right wing politicians will use any excuse to limit the power of the people and enhance their own, so pushing forth agendas to limit access to reproductive healthcare during the lock-down was just so outrageous. And as I’m writing this, protestors of police brutality are being targeted with state-sanctioned violence and police brutality. It’s hard to prioritize having our dumb little punk shows right now.
‘Pleasure and the Beast’ is one of my personal favourites of your song -, the lyrics blew my mind because they spoke to me so much and I recognized a lot of myself in that song. How do you balance writing from personal experiences with wider issues of gender and sexuality, as this song does? Unfortunately, women share so many sexist experiences! And even if we haven’t experienced something personally, I think we can relate to the general feelings of being dismissed or abused. When I write lyrics, I either can speak from personal experience, or the experiences of friends and family, or I approach an issue I’m interested in and learning about myself from a place of care and curiosity. I do my best to not speak for anyone, or over anyone, while still admitting “Hey this thing is fucked up, aren’t you angry too?”
Obviously, putting a womxn in the headline slot of Download Festival will not magically stop the patriarchy in its tracks. But it will make a difference to the music industry and to young girls growing up in need of more role models and encouragement to pick up instruments. What would it mean to you, if anything? And who would you pick if you could pick anyone? I would choose us, obviously! OK seriously, I don’t care who specifically headlines because I’m over here in the States and can’t attend unless I perform. What I do care about is representation. You can’t be what you can’t see. Booking more women, people of color, trans and gender non-conforming people, people with disabilities, and other marginalized groups is necessary at EVERY level of music. The sooner people see themselves represented on stage, the sooner they pick up an instrument and get to writing and performing, giving them more time to improve and get better and become the next headliner at Download. You know? Women can’t become huge headliners if they’re never given the opportunity!

Anxiety Disorder - Blue Heron Health News

I used to suffer from anxiety attacks. They were intense and they were frequent. And, in a number of ways, they nearly ruined my life.
My anxiety disorder grew steadily worse over the 16 years I suffered it. It seemed to gather strength over time…  while my ability to cope with it gradually weakened.
There honestly were times where I wondered where it would all eventually end.
Things are different now.
I don’t suffer anxiety attacks like that any more. I haven’t for nearly two years and my mental health is pretty much fully restored.
It took some time for me to finally get better.
Although, to be truthful, time was something I had plenty of.
Because 16 years of anxiety attacks – and everything that entails – wasn’t going to mind an extra few weeks of the same.
But by the time it had came to its end my anxiety had shrunk to a shadow of its former self.
I don’t miss it!
And why would I?
Any type of anxiety disorder is just plain cruel
Anxiety kicked me around emotionally, mentally and physically.
Anxiety episodes themselves were often dreadful.
Frantic, panicky, scared… Worrying about all sorts of small details, ruminating to the point of panic…
Mentally I’d go round in circles and just think myself into distress and powerlessness.
Anxiety disturbed my sleep to the point I could sometimes wake up more tired than I was when I had gone to bed.
And, inevitably, the misery of it all slipped me into occasional depression.
Mild depression is so common for people who suffer from any kind of anxiety disorder. I simply couldn’t recall the last time I felt relaxed or at ease.
Retreating from life
I tried so hard to avoid anxiety attacks that I retreated from situations and people that might trigger them.
The problem was that for me there were so many possible triggers that I was in danger at times of becoming a recluse.
My anxiety disorder made it difficult for me to make – and sustain – friendships.
Career aspirations took a back-burner too. I had to choose work where my bosses were completely understanding.
And where me being an emotional mess all of a sudden wasn’t going to get me fired! Which does restrict your options somewhat.
Not the future I wanted
I often feared that the effect anxiety was having on my relationships might leave me lonely and without friends. I didn’t want to be lonely…
I especially worried that my ability to work and support myself would deteriorate as the condition made my mental health slowly worsen.
And the physical cost – in terms of conditions that come from ongoing, chronic stress – didn’t bear thinking about.
Because the ongoing stress of my disorder is known conclusively to lead to chronic inflammation in the body.
And with too much inflammation an anxiety sufferer becomes a prime candidate for inflammatory disease. Which includes diabetes, fatty liver, kidney disease, arthritis, heart disease and some cancers.
So as well as a deteriorating mental health outlook…physical disability was an ever-present fear.
Doubting myself
All this made me wonder about me…
What was wrong with me? Why am I like this? What must I look like to other people? What would they be thinking about me?
I really did think sometimes that I was just a ridiculous person.
I tried the usual remedies…
I did everything I could to deal with my anxiety.
Medications made some difference. They often – although not always – took the edge off the worst anxiety attacks.
I took anxiety drugs for a while during my early years of the disease. Eventually on my doctor’s advice I stopped taking them. I was glad to stop – for two reasons.
First, the side-effects of the meds were similar to my actual anxiety! Agitation, sleep problems, loss of memory, poor concentration – even some confusion at times.
Second was that meds don’t address the actual causes of the anxiety.
They only work on symptoms – so you remain ill even when you’re drugged up.
The underlying causes of anxiety remain firmly in place… forever chipping away at your chances of ever having a truly happy life.
I didn’t like putting all those drugs into my body.
And I certainly didn’t like the fact that those meds can become habit forming – which is one of the reasons doctors try to get you off them as quickly as they can.
So what next?
So, like many anxiety sufferers, that left me having to use a variety of techniques to handle my condition.
Some approaches worked from time to time. Nothing was truly reliable though.
I truly thought then that reversing the condition was impossible.
I was wrong… but that was my thinking back then when I was ill.
In the meantime I was pretty stuck. I had better days and I had really difficult days. I rarely had two better days together. After years of suffering like this my anxiety disorder was making me grow tired and despondent.
Bad news… and good news
Even though I wasn’t sure that an anxiety disorder could be successfully treated it didn’t stop me from searching for some sort of miracle cure.
The bad news is that such a thing does not exist.
There are, of course, people out there who say otherwise.
They promise they’ll get rid of all types of anxieties using a secret potion made of some secret tree root they discovered in the forests of somewhere like Panama.
Other ‘gurus’ offer remedies based on all sorts of exotic rituals and exercises. A kind of faith healing, if you like.
I tried enough of them to know that none of these approaches offer single shred of improvement to an anxiety disorder.
There’s good reason why these quirky, untested approaches didn’t work. The people offering these ‘remedies’ simply didn’t understand what anxiety actually is.
They just didn’t understand that all anxiety disorders are intricate conditions with multiple layers of complexity.
There’s not a single pill or an exercise a person can do that’s going to make it go away just like that.
To make a change to an anxiety disorder requires a deep understanding of all the strands that have tied themselves together to create that disorder in the first place.
Thinking you can cure everything with a potion or a yoga exercise is just plain wrong.
Still, the promises are made. And people like me, desperate for some relief, fell for a few of them.
But now there’s some good news. Really, really good news.
If you’re patient, gentle with yourself and willing to slowly work through science-based, research-backed activities… then your world can change.
My world definitely did change.
It changed forever. I didn’t expect it to be this good. I sometimes can hardly believe that it is!
I stumbled on all this by accident
Some years ago I attended an anxiety support group where I used to live. We met weekly and although it didn’t do much to help with my anxiety it was comforting to not be alone with the problem.
It was on a visit back to that old neighborhood that I bumped into one of the group’s members.
Well. Ex-member, to be precise.
Martin had suffered from a different disorder to me – he had OCD for years – and I remembered that he had a hellish time getting it under control.
And although I couldn’t completely understand Martin’s world – my anxiety was generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) with occasional panic attacks (just to make life interesting) – I do know he had struggled a lot.
But while I still had very bad anxiety Martin had…. nothing.
No symptoms of OCD. No stress. No depression. No nothing.
We stopped off for a coffee and he explained what had happened.
The pathway out of anxiety
In a nutshell, Martin had become so despairing of his condition that he’d tried out some natural remedies. If modern medicine couldn’t help him then perhaps alternative medicine could.
Some of the different methods he’d tried had reduced the intensity of his symptoms – which meant that he could function better.
Excited by this small progress he’d gone down the alternative health rabbit hole… and then resurfaced with what he called ‘a miracle’.
Having tried many routes Martin had found a straightforward program that gave sufferers of all types of anxiety a clear but gentle pathway out of their problem – and into repaired and restored mental health.
All anxiety disorders are improved
Martin told me the method he used worked on these types of anxiety disorder:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and similar types of excessive and uncontrollable worries
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and its 4 major profiles
Panic Disorder, including agoraphobia and other intense experiences of fear or emotional discomfort
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and similar illnesses related to traumatic experiences
Social Anxiety Disorder and other debilitating social fears and anxieties
Martin explained that his condition had melted away bit by bit over time. He’d first noticed a slight lessening of the intensity of his symptoms.
And then a reduction in their frequency.
Over time, intensity and frequency reduced to… just about nothing.
I remember that at the time he was telling me all this, I think my mouth must have hung open. At times he laughed at my expression. ‘It’s true!’ he insisted. And I nearly believed him.
Of course, now I really believe him. Because I’ve had his experience with my own anxiety disorder.
How it works
Martin told me he had been introduced to an alternative health practitioner by the name of Christian Goodman.
Christian Goodman is the creator of a very successful anxiety disorder program that is producing outstanding results for many hundreds of people.
It’s this program that had changed Martin’s life so dramatically.
Now I’m a little sceptical about alternative cures. I do mostly trust doctors and the drugs companies. Not everyone does of course.
But Martin’s advice to try out Christian Goodman’s ‘The End of Anxiety’ program came at a time when I was becomng increasingly worried about both my mental and physical deterioration.
I had reached a stage where I really was prepared to try anything – and this seemed like a pretty good bet.
My route out of anxiety
Christian’s ‘The End of Anxiety’ program guided me carefully through a set of activities that I could do at home whenever I felt up to it.
As I worked through these activities over time so my anxiety gently melted away until it no longer existed.
The program was simple, straightforward and consisted of several types of activities:
Daily habits Some simple daily work that takes a few minutes but which does some of the most wonderful healing I have ever experienced
When-you-feel-like-it activities Some thinking type exercises that helped me change my relationship with myself and my condition. These were transformative…
One-off actions Simple but important things I only had to do once but which revealed really useful insights into what I was suffering
Self-care habits I didn’t know much about how to truly care for myself until I learnt it from Christian. In truth, I didn’t realize how important it was either – until I actually did it. Amongst all the small but memorable victories I enjoyed with this program I think self-care gave me the quickest release from my anxiety misery.
Action activities There are specific things you can do that over time make you healthier in the mind and body. Very simple but once I started I really didn’t want to stop. So I haven’t. Why stop doing what makes you happy?
Beginner’s nerves
I was nervous at first… starting this program itself made me anxious!
It’s almost as if my anxiety was protecting itself from me getting rid of it.
But there were two things I loved about this program.
First, was that there was no timeline for completion, no schedule that forced me to do things in a certain time.
The rate at which I adopted these changes was decided by me and how I felt about them. Sometimes I did more work, sometimes I did less.
It was like a dance… slow, slow, quick, quick, slow. Except that it was me who decided the rhythm and pace.
Second, Christian cautioned me against placing expectations on myself. Things might improve a lot one week but only a little the following week. That’s okay.
You’re only expectation should be that you will follow the program as best you can.
The rest will take care of itself.
Some of the program’s activities worked their magic at a very deep level.
So while they were very easy to do… their benefits don’t reach the surface straight away.
What I was doing was always working – I just had to be a little patient before I experienced the results.
Getting started was easy…
Christian’s plan was eye-opening and inspiring from the first page to the last.
I had suffered my anxiety disorder for 16 years and in that time I’d read books, countless articles and watched hours of videos about anxiety…
Nobody told me the things that Christian taught me.
He opened my eyes to anxiety disorder and made me understand it so much better than I ever had before.
Of course, the problem with so much exciting new information is this: how on earth do I apply all the stuff I’m learning here?
‘The End of Anxiety’ handles that question very neatly.
First of all, Christian clearly explains the route out of anxiety.
He tells you the what, the why and the how of it all.
Simple explanations, clearly made points, easy to follow logic.
But then Christian offers you a simple start-up guide so that you can quickly make the learning work for you.
You know the quick-start sheet you get with a new phone or a complicated watch? It’s like that.
You want to get started now – not next week – so you need some simple steps you can start following immediately.
His ‘How to get started’ section told me what to do now. Then what to do next. Then what to do after that.
And once I built up my own confidence in what I was doing… I did what I wanted when I wanted to do it.
So long as I regularly did something I knew my anxiety was going to lose this battle.
And it did.
The difference that made the difference
I’m not criticizing the standard medical approaches to the various forms of anxiety.
Drugs, for all their addictive qualities and unpleasant side-effects, do make some difference.
CBT can make a difference too, even if it eventually wears off for many people.
And there are various self-management techniques that help us delay an attack, reduce it – or simply survive it.
But none of these really get to the heart of what’s wrong.
None of these will ever make you better.
One thing I learned from Christian is that anxiety disorders come from a place that can be very deep within us.
It’s not like a cut on your arm or a broken bone – something that can be clearly seen, easily diagnosed and quickly fixed.
Our disorder is hidden. It’s complex, tangled.
The causes of the disorder, the way the disorder affects us, our own thinking about ourselves and our world, and the coping mechanisms we employ to cope with our difficulties…
…all these are layered into the disorder itself, making it a deeper, much less accessible problem.
They feed into each other, creating a spaghetti-like tangle of fears, negative thoughts and distress.
It’s impossible to see where one aspect of our disorders begin and another one starts.
This is where Christian’s program is so different from anything I’d experienced before.
Standard medical remedies mostly address the symptoms – the surface – of the problem.
They get us through the day – which is a vital help – but we remain ill even when we’re managing to function.
Whereas ‘The End of Anxiety’ works very gently on the underlying causes of an anxiety disorder.
It gets to the foundation of the problem… and starts wearing away that foundation.
Instead of drugging me out of my anxiety Christian works on the inside, the source of that anxiety disorder.
And once it starts doing its work then the anxiety’s causes – whatever they are for your type of anxiety – start to subside.
Not because I’d medicated them out of existence but because they had started losing their grip on my life.
They were simply losing their reason to exist.
Quick anxiety relief…
Christian understands anxiety disorders.
Certainly he understands them better than I did. I suspect he knows more about the underlying condition than even my doctors.
After all, he did in weeks what my doctors hadn’t managed to do for me in 16 years.
But he states clearly that this isn’t a quick-fix-cure.
So you can expect to still experience your anxiety for some time – even while following this program. Things will improve. Attacks will become less frequent – and less intense when they do occur.
But while you’re still getting them Christian steps you through an excellent coping strategy that will dramatically reduce the intensity and the duration of the experience.
It was a new coping method for me – I’d never heard of this particular way of getting through an attack.
It helped keep me upright when things got tough. Which meant I was generally in much better condition to continue with the gentle work of melting away my disorder.
I wish I had learnt this years ago! But better late than never, I guess…
How about you?
I don’t know how you’re suffering. You may have a different anxiety disorder to the one I used to have. Or you may simply experience the same disorder in a completely different way.
Either way, I imagine that you’ve reached a point where you just don’t want it any more.
I empathize more than you might imagine. I do know what it’s like.
Anxiety disorder has no upside. It’s a cruel affliction that simply eats away at our happiness and destroys our simple hopes for a peaceful, contented life.
We didn’t earn our anxiety disorder. We don’t deserve what happened to us. It isn’t our fault.
Yet we feel that we’re stuck with it for life, that our anxiety is as much a part of ourselves as an arm or our kidneys.
It turns out though that this simply is not the case.
As nearly a thousand people have now found out… we’re no longer helpless and anxiety doesn’t have to be a life-sentence.
With patience and the right guidance we can gently ease ourselves out of the darkness and into the light.
Christian Goodman’s ‘The End of Anxiety’ is that guidance.
And the moment I decided I wanted to heal and that I was going to take those first tiny steps towards saving myself from a life of anxiety misery… was the single best day of my life.
Because everything that is wonderful in my life now is because of the decision I made then.
How will it be for you?
Well, you have your type of anxiety disorder. You experience it in your own unique way. So your own experience of anxiety is uniquely yours. There’s nobody else quite like you.
Which means your journey to healing might differ in some respects to mine.
The key though is that you get on that path. This is what really matters.
Once I’d decided that enough was enough – I had put myself firmly on that path.
I wanted a different kind of life.
One that was significantly calmer, more predictable, and which freed me to lead the kind of normal existence that so many other people take for granted.
And that’s my reality now.
By following Christian’s advice to the letter you present your anxiety with an irresistible healing force.
Over time, it has no option but to surrender.
Christian’s program is guaranteed
Hundreds of people have successfully used ‘The End of Anxiety’ to successfully treat their anxiety disorders. They followed the guide and allowed improvements to come in their own time.
Their lives now are nothing like their lives were before.
The change to their anxiety disorder – and therefore to their day-to-day happiness – has been quite literally transformative.
There’s no reason why it wouldn’t be exactly the same for you.
Which is why Christian offers you a complete money-back guarantee on his program.
If within 60 days purchasing ‘The End of Anxiety’ you are not completely happy with the changes to your anxiety situation so far… then you can have all your money back. No questions.
Christian makes this guarantee because he’s witnessed so very many people gain life transforming benefits from following his simple plan. Their health and happiness improves as their anxiety recedes into the background.
They are relaxed, calm and in control of their lives. They experience few – or, in most cases, absolutely no – anxiety symptoms.
I wanted to know what it felt like to live my life without an anxiety disorder. I found out. And you can too – click here and get your own copy of ‘The End of Anxiety’…
All anxiety sufferers realize in the end that if we’re going to heal then we are going to have to play an active role in that healing.
If you’ve endured anxiety for any period of time then you already know that it isn’t going to just disappear on its own.
If you do nothing… it’s yours forever.
My anxiety had a cause. Yours does too.
Your anxiety cannot withstand an approach that directly affects that cause.
It cannot resist something that gently dissolves its grip on your happiness.
Christian’s research-backed methods gradually eased anxiety out of my life.
So I know it works.
And Christian guarantees it.
If within 60 days purchasing this program you don’t agree that you’re feeling significantly better than you have done for years then you can have all your money back.
I took Christian up on this same offer a little over 2 years ago. I’m a completely changed person – and I live a much happier, stress-free life.
That can be your story too. Take charge of what’s happening to you… and then watch it change. Get ‘The End of Anxiety’ by clicking here…
There’s no end to where an anxiety disorder can take you.
Over time, a sufferer’s mental health deteriorates. If the condition isn’t addressed head-on, depression becomes significantly more likely.
That’s not all. The condition eventually undermines physical health too.
Ongoing stress – an integral part of anxiety misery – releases stress hormones into the bloodstream.
And ongoing levels of stress hormones in the body lead to inflammation and a host of related physical diseases – with diabetes, kidney and liver disease, heart disease and various immunity malfunctions being the most common.
I wasn’t going to let this happen to me. First my mental health was suffering.
And then my physical health could follow suit.
Enough was enough. I wasn’t going to wait around until my health had deteriorated to the point of no return. I didn’t want that regret hanging over my head.
Once I made my decision to heal… Christian’s program did the rest.
It was easily the best decision I have ever made.
If you’ve read this far then I believe you’ve made your decision too.
You’ve decided you’re not going to suffer like this anymore. You’ve decided you’re going to heal.
Which means you need ‘The End of Anxiety’. Click here and you can have it…

It’s been a while since my last update since most of April and May left me with very little time for blogging. I just wanted to do a quick catch up on what I’ve been reading and what I plan to read in the coming month.
What I’ve Read
Almost 100% of the reading I’ve done in the past two months have been done via audiobook. Bless them for enabling me to finish all these novels while I completed my chores or during my morning commute, I would have fell into a book slump without them. I know at the beginning of the year I said I would cancel my Scribd account, but since I read so much via audio now, the set up is working great for me.
These aren’t even in chronological reading order because I am a Mess.
Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid ★★★★☆ This novel is best enjoyed via audiobook, sorry I don’t make the rules. TJR has a way of making her characters feel so raw and real, if I didn’t know any better I would have been searching for the discography of Daisy Jones & The Six after completing this novel. Epistolary novels don’t always work for me (see: Illuminae), because I sometimes find it hard to connect to the story. 100% not the case here, and I loved how utterly flawed everyone was allowed to be. To tell the truth, I didn’t like most of them, but they sure captured my imagination.
The Dragon Republic by R. F. Kuang ★★★★ HELLO IS ANYONE SURPRISED I AM COMPLETE TRASH FOR THIS BOOK. NO? OK. Ahem. With complete objectivity, this book was a stunning follow-up to The Poppy War. It’s more introspective, it deals with PTSD, it brings in all of the threads that complicates and muddies the war Rin is waging on Nikara and with herself. The ending left me literally reeling and screaming in random DMs for weeks. I still have not completely stopped and I fear I will never be coherent again. Give me book three or give me death.
Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey ★★★★☆ I finished this book about two hours ago and edited the post to include it. Although it contained the familiar tropes like a magical school, a jaded private detective, a dark prophecy, a hidden world of mages, a murder mystery – Magic for Liars combined them in a way that kept the plot fresh and engaging. Imagine if Aunt Petunia never married Vernon Dursley but instead became a private investigator – who’s then called back to Hogwarts to unravel a murder, with Lily as one of the professors on tenure. Except better, because the character work in this book is freaking top notch. Just go read it OK, this is the gay and messy magical school we all deserve.
The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman ★★★★☆ Billed as The Raven Cycle meets Stranger Things, this is one of those rare instances where the book matches the comp perfectly. While I found the pacing to be slow, I thought it suited this character-driven story. It’s all about families and legacies and finding your own paths despite the weight of all that history. I adored all of the characters, especially Harper – my sworld-wielding warrior queen. I cannot wait to see the sequel and watching how entangled relationships will develop.
Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan ★★☆☆☆ I love the idea of hate-to-love, especially with a villain love-interest, so that’s what initially drew me to this book. When I learned that the heroine could converse with the gods, I got even more excited. Alas, it was a bit of a missed opportunity. I saw shadows of a fanfic-worthy broody bad boy in every scene with Malachiasz. I can understand insta-attraction, what I can’t understand is how poorly the character and relationship development was done. The stars are wholly reserved for Serefin, my drunken drama-queen and the only part of this novel I enjoyed.
We Hunt The Flame by Hafsah Faizal ★★★☆☆ I expected this to be a five star read, so while it was good, I am disappointed I didn’t love it more. The prose were gorgeous and I am definitely checking out whatever Hafsah Faizal writes next. However, the writing style’s penchant for beautiful metaphors sometimes felt jarring with the pacing of the book. While I liked the characters indivdually, I didn’t feel compelled by any relationships aside from the one shared between Altair and Nasir in the beginning. I’m definitely in the minority with my lukewarm response to this title, though – there are tons of fans so don’t be put off by my review.
Verity by Colleen Hoover ★☆☆☆☆ The sole star is for the fact that while the plot of this book was so improbable it veered into farcical, it was a page-turner. Toxic relationships is the bread-and-butter of crime, but there was something particularly tasteless about the way adultery and marriage was depicted in this book. Partly due to the casual nonchalance that CoHo tends to dismiss cheating, but also because even with my few remaining brain cells I could still figure out the plot was BS. The way disability was handled in this novel also left a lot to be desired, and the ‘twist’ at the end disappointed me so much I wanted to hurl this book into the sun. This was 7 hours of my good life wasted.
The Bride Test ★★★★★ I cannot remain calm or objective about Helen’s books, I love them completely – because they’re unabashedly Vietnamese, because they’re proudly diasporic, because they’re filled with characters who feel so real I’m mildly miffed we’re not invited to their weddings. Khai and Esme slowly but surely stole my heart over a course of a long haul international flight. I laughed and cried and went through all of the emotions of first love. Along with its powerful emotional resonance, The Bride Test also offered sharp societal critique on the accessibility of the American Dream. These books are so special to me and I am so glad we have more Helen content to look forward to for years to come.
Ruse ★★★★☆ This is the second and final instalment to Cindy Pon’s high-octane and prescient eco-dystopia – if you haven’t read Want, go visit your local bookshop right now and change this immediately. The bar is raised with Ruse, from the character development, the scope of the world, and the ever heightened stake. I loved seeing the gang again, even though Cindy did not pull any punches when it came to making my children suffer. It was such a satisfying and well-earned conclusion.
Wilder Girls ★★★★☆ Whew, this book was harrowing and intense. It felt dangerous and unknowable, with the plot constantly shifting right under my feet – just as the physical world in the book warps and distorts everything from plants to landscape to school-girls. I read it in a rush over two days because I could not put it down. If you’re after a novel with ride-or-die friendship and sapphic romance, this is one to keep an eye out for.
Red, White, and Royal Blue ★★★★★ I am completely bereft that Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry of Wales are not real people – for these two I would take up reading gossip magazines again. This book was rambunctious and as irrepressible as the passion that drives its main characters. The supporting cast are equally impressive, and I love the chemistry imbued into the various relationships in this novel. I can’t remember the last time I rooted so hard for fictional characters to overcome and triumph. Although we can’t have Claremont 2020, can we please please please get a Jude and Nora spin-off instead?
Looks like romance is my new favourite genre, judging by my latest two five star reads. Please give me all the recs, but no mayo toxic romance please. I feel like whenever I stray from the usual diet of speculative fiction, I become very picky in which books I read – which tends to mean that I end up loving the ones I do pick up.
What I’m Reading
I usually have numerous books on the go because I have no self-control. I have two going at the moment, but this number will undoubtedly multiply before I have the chance to publish this post.
Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennet – I am about 5 hours into the audiobook and I am already completely charmed by this world and its characters! The rogue-archetype has always been one of my favourite fantasy trope, and to make it even better Santia comes with a snarky talking key. The world building is a marvel, especially the magic system and how it is manipulated by the characters and governing bodies within the novel. I also heard there is a budding sapphic romance in this one – I think I just met the love interest and I already love her as well. Very excited to continue on!
On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong – I am three chapters into this novel and it’s already taken my very soul apart. Written by a Vietnamese-American son for his illiterate mother, it’s part-meditation and part-confessional on PTSD, inherited trauma, and how a you learn to communicate with a mother-tongue you can barely speak. I am ready for it completely wreck me.
I forgot that I am technically still reading The Priory of the Orange Tree but I am so exhausted with this brick at this point in time, I’m not sure I will ever finish it. The world building (West and East dragon mythology), and the characters (sapphic Queens and her bodyguard) had so much potential – but I kept feeling like an emotional weight was missing.
What I’m Planning to Read
I am an expert is making up TBR and then not sticking to them. So to save myself the embarrassment here’s two I am definitely reading this month, the rest is c’est la vie.
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson I know y’all keep saying that Enchantment of Ravens is lame because it has no plot but I loved Rook and Isobel with all my heart OK. I know nothing about this one except that it has a librarian babe (maybe?). Therefore, I am very excited.
Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim This is part of the Caffeine Book Tours that Shealea organised (thank you!!). This is one of my most anticipated read of this year because fashion and East Asian fantasy? Relevant to my interest. I think we can all agree that this is the best cover of 2019. I want this illustrator to draw my life.
What are you reading and what are you all up to? I miss you!! Hope you’re going to have an amazing month and Happy Pride everyone!!
June Reading Updates It's been a while since my last update since most of April and May left me with very little time for blogging.

Are you sure everyone on the web can easily access your website? ‘Cause if it is not accessible to everyone, you are losing some great business opportunities!
This article is going to put some shades on this “web accessibility” term. Also, you will get to know why it holds so much importance in today’s digital market.
So, What Does “Web Accessibility” Refer To?
In simpler words, “web accessibility” is an effective way to ensure “everyone on the web” can effortlessly access and use any forms of digital media. It can be a website, or it can be any software application as well.
Now, why did I focus on the part “everyone on the web”?
Well, you have to understand that people with any physical disability or cognitive limitations use the web too. A recently made research report highlights that in the United Kingdom; nearly 11 million people have some kind of disability. And it does not mean that every one of them cannot just use the web!
Of course, many disables use the internet. And they too are part of the audience that seeks favors through digital services. Hence, it is the responsibility of the trades to consider them and craft a hassle-free journey for them on the web.
This is why paying mind to the web reachability practice while building a website makes sure that everyone can get the most out of the website and interact with the site smoothly.
How The User Experience Gets Affected By Disability?
To guarantee properly done accessibility, reaching the root of what is causing the hindrance, what is stopping the flawless access is kind of essential. Only then figuring out the base of the issues and coming up with the right way out to resolve the barrier becomes easier.
So, here is a list of some accessibility challenges.
Users with visual impairment may face problems while reading a text. Maybe the size of the text needs to be increased. Or maybe they need screen readers!
Users, who suffer from color blindness, cannot distinguish between the colors. They face problems in distinguishing text blocks and its background.
Users with dyslexia suffer from not being able to read and spell properly.
There are users out there who feel troubled to click on any link or any small navigation icons.
You add video and audio content to your website to keep your visitors engaged. But people with hearing troubles cannot access it!
Any users who come under the aforementioned categories need assistive technologies so that they can browse the web easily.
A Sneak Peek to Some Assistive Technologies
Continuing from the above point, I would like to draw your attention to some advanced technologies that help disable users to get a smooth web browsing experience.
Braille Terminals or Braille Keyboards
Screen Reader Software
Speech Recognition Software
Sign Language or using subtitles for videos on a website
Screen Magnification Software
Keyboard Overlays
Now, Why Is Web Accessibility Necessary?
See, today, the Internet and Web are crucial parts of everyone’s lives, and it doesn’t need any special explanation. These are the valuable resources that we all need in our lives.
Be it for the government or business organizations, be it for employment or for students to learn better, be it for the healthcare industry to simply recreational activities – to do anything, we access these resources.
Now, do you think it should be accessible to only the people who do not have any kind of disabilities? Of course not!
You have to keep in mind two factors i.e. an equal opportunity for everyone along with giving everyone the same access. You need to understand that internet access is not considered as a privilege. Rather, it is a right for everyone. And by abiding by the principles of web design that supports accessibility, you can make sure of the fact that your digital presence is accessible to anyone irrespective of their abilities.
Other than this, there are some business benefits of web accessibility too.
A Competitive Advantage in the Market
Honestly, most of the websites built out there are not accessible to “everyone”! In such a scenario, if you make your website keeping the web accessibility factor in mind, it can reach a broader target audience.
Reshaping a shopping website for the disabled buyers out there will increase client numbers on the website, as well as the popularity of it. All because the website is usable for both enabled and disabled audiences.
This is definitely an added advantage for you over your competitors who are still not giving that much importance to the web accessibility.
Better Accessibility Ensures Better Usability
The accessibility of your website is high- means; more people can visit and navigate through your website. And when the website traffic is high, the chances of business conversion are high too. The math here is as simple as that!
These accessibility and usability, even though these two are different from each other, they kind of have the same objectives. And the objective is to devise engaging and impressive user experience. These two factors ensure that your website functions properly and delivers a seamless UX to the visitors.
Americans with Disabilities Act
In the US, this law protects the rights of disabled ones. So, ignoring them as a potential audience can have the same impact as violating the law. And this is absolutely wrong. To abide by this rule and to avert the legal consequences, trades should consider the disabled ones too.
Things to Consider While Making Your Website Accessible to Everyone
So far, you got to know what web accessibility is and how it holds a major significance in the website development and design industry. Now, find out how you can do it i.e. making the website accessible to everyone.
Title Tag
You already know how important the title tag is for SEO purposes. This is crucial for letting Google know and understand “about the web page”. Now, while integrating web accessibility too, this title tag plays a major role.
The ‘Screen Readers’ prefer having a title tag. It aids the disabled who use screen readers to access a site.
Using Default HTML Tags
Disables need such tech-help that aid them to go through a site. They prefer taking assistance from ‘Screen Readers’. Now, this device follows a specific method while going through every component on a page along with the texts. When it fails to decipher an element, the one using the device fails to comprehend it too resulting in a poor experience for the users.
Opting for HTML tags that are set by default is a way out to this problem.
Keyboard Navigation
A site that anyone can navigate seamlessly with just a keyboard is an example of how actually it should be devised.
However, there is an issue with such navigation buttons that are animated. Usually, screen readers cannot understand that. So, it is advisable not to use such buttons as the dropdowns to ensure better accessibility.
Do Not Forget to Use Subtitles
According to the recent practices, applying audio and video elements to entertain and interact with the visitors on the site is a popular practice. With this, the structure of a website will not fail.
Now, how about a user who has hearing problems? This is why you should always include subtitles.
With video transcription, the website enables Google to read the transcriptions. This allows for better rankings on the SERPs.
Are There Any Tools Available to Check Web Accessibility?
Yes, you can find some effective tools today that can help you to understand whether you are doing the web accessibility right or not.
Among many freely available tools, here are a few globally popular names.
A11Y Compliance Platform
Dynomapper
Automated Accessibility Testing Tool
Accessibility Checklist
Accessibility Checker and more.
Tools are available, fine! But buzz sessions with experts are also required to handle the tools in the proper way and analyze the outcomes. Their inputs and guidance are valuable too as they are dealing in the industry for years and have deeper insights to build a site that is accessible to everyone irrespective of their physical abilities.

Every Day is Magic: Ada Limón by Alex Crowley in PW
In her 2015 collection, Bright Dead Things, a National Book Award finalist for poetry, Ada Limón writes of moving to Kentucky: “Confession: I did not want to live here.” It’s perhaps not a surprising sentiment coming from a coastally oriented person who was raised in Northern California, attended college in Seattle, and then spent over a decade in New York City.
But Limón and her husband, Lucas, have been in Lexington for seven years now and the effects of settling into this place are noticeable in her new book, The Carrying (Milkweed, Aug.). It’s a phenomenally lively and attentive collection replete with the trappings of living a little closer to nature. While Bright Dead Things is marked by a preponderance of light, such as images of fireflies and neon signs, The Carrying features numerous appearances by various trees, birds, and beetles. Limón also demonstrates a greater willingness to be explicit in naming colors, particularly green. “It’s crazy green, the whole book,” she says. “Lexington is the greenest place I’ve ever lived.” Similarly, where in Bright Dead Things, Limón tells a lot of stories and anecdotes, in The Carrying she is very present in her thoughts and experiences.
As it turns out, these shifts in focus have another, altogether unexpected source. While putting Bright Dead Things together, Limón was diagnosed with chronic vestibular neuronitis, which can cause bouts of vertigo. “If I’m really having vertigo, it’s pretty intense and I really have to focus,” she says. “There’s a focus on presence that I think that the body has given me in the last three years that I’ve had to listen to. When I was sick, everything was a little bit of a blur. When things would stand still, it was the most amazing technicolor. It’s almost like the static stops and then suddenly the picture became clear. ‘Oh my god, I see the mailbox! I see the little red flag.’ Those became things I anchored on to. It was a way of saying that I was surviving, that I was ok.”
Limón’s writing process has been heavily impacted by this new reality. “I used to write everyday but when the vertigo was bad, it was nearly impossible for me to write. So when I could, I would try to write a poem every day, because I felt good. Suddenly the brain would stop worrying about remaining in balance and would be, ‘oh, remember words?’ So this book was written much more in fits and starts.” Limón thinks it’s likely that lots of poems didn’t happen because of her health but that what she did produce benefited from the forced increase in concentration, “in the stillness of it.”
The book’s title points to another health issue that Limón confronts in its pages: struggles with fertility. “What if, instead of carrying// a child, I’m supposed to carry grief?” she asks in “The Vulture & The Body.”
“It took us a while to even come around to the idea of trying,” she says of she and Lucas having a child. “We thought, ‘let’s try this, it might be amazing.’ Unfortunately, The fertility drugs made the vertigo worse.” Limón has since ceased the fertility regimen she discusses in several poems and is now “happily child-free.”
“You wait for the universe to send you an answer and the universe does. It just said ‘no!’” But this reality opened up a new avenue for her, what she calls being a “poetry mom”: “Anyone can have a different experience, but for me, I find a lot of creativity, creation, in poetry and in writing, so I have this element of myself that I feel I’m giving to the world and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a child.” In the poem “Mastering,” Limón writes, “perhaps the only thing I can make// is love and art.” It’s a subtle political stance, given the ways that womanhood and motherhood are conflated: “Think about the word mother or woman. How are you valued? It’s a lovely, beautiful thing to know you can be valued and respected and even cherished without giving birth. Because motherhood becomes such a definition of, ‘well, you’re not a real woman until you’ve given birth.’”
Following that line of thought, Limón pays homage to Gwendolyn Brooks, Lucille Clifton, and Sylvia Plath, for “speaking about motherhood in a way that was never spoken before.” She lists a number of important influences—”Sexton, Plath, Rukeyser, Brooks and Clifton. Adrienne Rich! These women who were opening little doors”—before continuing: “Isn’t it cool that, even if I don’t get to be a physical mother, the people who’ll read my work will somehow be affected. I’m related to Gwendolyn Brooks. I’m not, but in that way I am.”
Limón’s deep respect for her predecessors also points toward another core theme of The Carrying, that of the interconnectedness of beings and how humans attempt to express it through language. “If we’re gonna say we’re poets, we’ve got to say that language matters, but we really have to look at a thing in all sorts of ways. Every aspect of it. How does it enforce patriarchy, how does it enforce white supremacy? The way we think about gender fluidity? All these levels. Let’s look at our language deeply. Why not pick it apart? Why not use it as the right tool?” Limón brings up her poem “A New National Anthem,” in which she delivers the brilliant insight that maybe there is a hidden third verse to every song of America. She asks, somewhat rhetorically “Why do these words, for me, fail?”
Here, the subtle politics of The Carrying become more explicit and pointed. “It’s hard not to be political now,” Limón says. “A lot of poets, they’re like, ‘well, I’m not political, I don’t do this,’ and it’s like, no, we have to. You can’t be truthful if you don’t talk about it.” She realized it was true of her own disability issues: “I realized on some level how much I’ve taken my own ableism for granted.” The general public is finally starting to talk about ableism, Limón notes, and suspects it’s part of a wider phenomenon within contemporary poetry: “Poets seem to be at the forefront of those conversations; like, there’s an openness that we’re always trying to get to, instead of getting comfortable when one door comes down—what about the next one?”
Limón says she constantly asks herself, “Can I go deeper? What kind of poems come out of revisiting the stories we tell ourselves?” She has taken such a step, both formally and substantively, between these latest collections. It’s most notable in a set of letter poems written to poet Natalie Diaz. “She’s so fun to write to,” Limón remarks. Written over the course of nine months, she says that these poems “became a way where even if I wasn’t feeling well I felt like I could write to her because we didn’t have any agreement to publish; they were very personal.” These four poems are more fluid and off-the-cuff than most of Limón’s usual lyric narratives. “They really intended to be letters, so I wanted to remain true to that; I wanted them to communicate just to her, so I wasn’t thinking about an outside audience at all. That’s totally different for both of us.”
Limón opens her notebook to show me a handwritten draft—in effortless, fluid script—of one of her poems to Diaz, discovering in the process another that she had forgotten about. “Oh, this is funny, I don’t remember this poem. This is a totally different poem, I never typed this poem up. Holy shit.” She scans the page for a minute and reads aloud, laughing: “it says ‘Was Bishop a mean drunk?’” She then finds the draft of “Cargo,” the poem she was looking for. “It’s very letter-like. When I typed it up, though, that’s when all the edits happened.”
Limón and Diaz also read a book by Potawatomi botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer called Braiding Sweetgrass, which in its discussion of Native wisdom and ecology offered insights that suffuse all of The Carrying. “I think there was a part of that that seeped in about connectedness, the aliveness that I wanted to experience in the world,” she says. “I’m a narrative lyric poet, but I really wanted to do my due diligence and give attention to the things that were not necessarily myself. Even though I’m definitely talking a lot about myself in the work, it’s hopefully not in a way that feels disconnected or isolated.”
“I read a lot, but when I’m writing it’s hard because I’m a mimic,” Limón says about direct poetic influences on The Carrying. “I need a bit of radio silence. But I do think Lucille Clifton plays a powerful role for me in this book. And Joy Harjo,” from whom she takes the collection’s epigraph. “Natalie and I both talk about Creeley and Lorca, and they’re both in there; Lorca especially with his magical realism,” which she says reminds her that she’s allowed to engage as well. “The weirdest thing in the world is reality. I’m more fascinated by the idea of magic than I am of god. I mean, I understand why we think about it, but I think the idea of every day being this incredible gift, this chance for the bizarre and the ordinary to interact and dance and get twisted. That’s magic.”
Now that magic happens in a house in Kentucky, where Limón has her own office “and a screened-in porch with a big table and a grill—that’s a good writing space for me.” Still, she laments that “Sonoma is still deep within me,” especially after the 2017 forest fires, which appear in The Carrying. “And one thing about New York that I miss so much is that bar on the corner.” But, showing me pictures of her home, she scrolls past a picture of a snake in the yard and mentions that her poem “Against Belonging” is about how “these snakes find their home wherever they want to find their home. And I felt like that’s what I’m doing, wherever I am I’m finding a home.”
Limón returns to “A New National Anthem,” which ends with a “song that says my bones/ are your bones, and your bones are my bones,/ and isn’t that enough?” She repeats the question to me, “Well, isn’t that enough? I don’t know. Clearly it’s not, but I want it to be enough. I feel like poems can sometimes fail by trying to be too resolute, or by trying to give some received wisdom when there is none. I’m not a wise person. I’ve lived some years and I’ve had some experiences, but do I have wisdom to pass on? I dunno. I think I have questions to pass on,” Limón says, laughing again. Maybe knowing how to ask the right question is its own kind of wisdom and she doesn’t realize how wise she is. “It’s another way of saying we’re all in this together. I don’t have it figured out.”
