Happy anniversary to Arlo the Alligator Boy, I remember watching it back in 2021 and I instantly fall in love with this underrated gem. Besides meeting Arlo and the gang, it's filled with colorful animation, banging songs and great performances, it became one of favorite animated films of all time. To this day, I'm still hoping for season 2 of I heart Arlo but for now, Happy anniversary to our little alligator boy! 🥰🎂🐊🍕🦅🐟🐅

Maybe this is just me but- for as much as it is very much a for-funzies crackship, I feel like the idea of Ansel/Marcellus could either be really surprisingly wholesome and sweet or just really funny depending on the day.

On the one hand, you have the fun surface level Opposites Attract dynamic of Flamboyant Upper Class Guy meets Lovable Trash Man (and also they're both just so silly) that can then develop into something deeper and more poignant - where they find things to genuinely appreciate and admire about one another (Marcellus appreciating Ansel's style/showmanship/passion, Ansel appreciating Marcellus' bluntness/honesty/secret soft side - especially when it comes to Arlo despite Marcellus supposedly hating kids - and both of them being able to sympathize and relate to each other's rough pasts) and are just able to, at the very least, build a solid friendship and rapport with each other.

...On the other hand, you have "Boyfriend who can literally afford anything they want/need for a date" VS "Boyfriend who is more than happy to steal anything they want/need for a date". Like those couples who constantly bicker over who's going to pay the check but more chaotic (which makes it even better)

Either way, whether for silliness or wholesomeness, short-term or long-term, I'm pretty down for it (and the fact that Marcellus is canonically attracted to Ansel at the very least just makes this even more fun to think about asdfghjkl)

Okay SO I’ve been doing some thinking abt my Arlo The Alligator Boy pirate au

All nonhumans- Arlo, Ansel, Marcellus, Tony, etc- are referred to as the Strange. Even humans that just look a bit different, like Bertie, are lumped into the Strange category.

Most pirate ships are crewed and captained by the Strange, with a few human crew members sometimes. There are, of course, still all-human crews, but for the most part the life of a pirate is far better than discrimination.

The people of the port city of New York are actually a lot more accepting (now) of the Strange than they were before.

The story will start with a young Ansel meeting Arlo’s mom, who I’ve named Larriel. She’s one of the Strange, an alligator-taur who’s a pirate captain aboard the ship the Bermuda Triangle.

In this au the world is very Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-y, in that yes, the real world is still there but so is everything Else. There’s just less of it.

Fun fact! Tony was part of the original crew under Larriel! When she died (the night Arlo hatched) he briefly left the pirate life, only to meet his new crew and become a pirate once more (which is how he meets Arlo.) Part of him agreeing to let Arlo stay is “okay this kid PROBABLY isn’t the son of my former captain but he looks so much like her and reminds me so much of her… and I do need help breaking my first mate out of prison anyway.” Then they get to the city, they see a poster of Ansel, and everything clicks

I <3 Arlo - my thoughts on the show

episode 1: Furlecia is an icon. She undestands that sometimes cutting your fringe is the best coping mechanism and is ready to help. Precious ballfur lady <3 Also Ansel trying to do the dad thing. He's trying and we love him for that.

episode 2: Alia's arc??? Character development? Super way to dealing with your limitations??? Also Arlo being extra helpful and supportive!!?? This is a very valuable ep especially for those kids who suffer from conditions that won't let them focus.

Alia is my hero.

episode 3: Body positivity + ghost story? that's an incredible combo! that bird has no chill and apparently Marcellus can be a wise friend <3 He will share pizza crusts with you too on condition you start crying! Disgusting is new beautiful, remember that <3

episode 4: Arlo literally said 'i don't understand the need to be alone but Bertie for you I'll provide you the nice environment for your alone time bc i love you' and that is so sweet and thoughtfull I can't.

episode 5 Furlecia honey, you're an icon but you gotta relax! Good lesson on what stress can do to us if we overwork :( Furlecia skating so fab ily 

miss president: ok establishing boundaries. I love that for you <3

episode 6: continuation from the film: Ansel feels insecure about the dad thing but wants to impress his son. Fortunately Arlo explains that he doesn't care about the expensive trip experiences. He values simple things and Ansel starts to understand Arlo's pov.

episode 7: FROG DOES THE FLOP flop fLOp coz it's homesick :( but at the end of the episode Jeromio is happy and that's all that matters :3

episode 8: Marcellus you jerk. .......... Wait Mercellus sweety I'm sorry I doubted you!!! <3

episode 10: you mean my fav episode? Arlo having hallucinations was so funny I can't... And damn it had a sadder undertone too... Ansel really was desperate to hep him !!! I'm so glad that in the end he succeded! <3

episode 11: wow a great representation how our bad mood can change people all around us. haha Bertie's gasp when Arlo said he wants to be alone. Right then she knew: 'That alligator boy now turned into me and it’s my fault!'

episode 12: CRAB LADY I BELIEVED IN YOU but hey they made ‘what are those vine’ come to life! Wait I take that back dear evil crab lady I love you

episode 13: hot weather not good octopus is in love with Ansel's statue? Bertie being irresponsible for once? I mean yeah go girl, but Arlo's in trouble now! episode 14 Tony's parents be like: we don't love u bc u don't steal. Ok nevermind at least you can lie. ... and then they steal Ansel's helicopter. I love the easter egg - ansel's song from the movie is played in one scene

episode 15 aka follow me home reprise but in New York

episode 16 jeromio facepalming my beloved Weird carousel administrator my beloved I want to steal your means of transportation daaw~ Arlo trying to impress his papa by repairing his fav carousel. What can go wrong?

episode 17 head empty only Pumpkin Boy name reveal. His name is GORDON! Also that scene when Arlo was interrogating himself was funny

episode 18 ok I would never have expected a new villain there. Furlecia proving her disguise is the best. I want to see more her skills in action in s2. Marcellus sometimes has great ideas pass it on Edmee proving she's the most rad granny in the world. And yey! Edmee and Ansel introducing to each other! Edme living on the Seaside with her alligator son! Miss President and Ansel my new otp!

Summary:

Overall, I <3 Arlo is a lovely animation! I love the references from the movie and kinda musical-like nature of the show. ‘Slow walk’ is undeniably my favourite track from the soundtrack! The only thing that bugged me but oonly a little bit is that Bertie has more screentime than the rest of Arlo’s friends. However these characters do have their own episodes so this way it is balanced. The series is both comedy gold and educational because they tackle serious issues in a funny way, such as the odds of parenting (especially when you enter the child’s life in a later stage), the need for privacy, wanting the acceptance of your parents/ people, the struggles of an introverted person to fit in. 

So, do I recommed? hell yeah, go and watch it!

Have some Arlo headcanons

Arlo can knit after Edmee teaches him.

Ansel gave Arlo a phone.

Arlo loves hot chocolate.

The gang has a movie/game night.

Besides Marcellus, Bertie had a hard time trusting Ansel at first, but though time she gives him a chance for Arlo.

Arlo and Tony is bi, Bertie is a lesbian, Alia and Marcellus are pan, Furlecia is non-binary while Ansel is gay.

Ansel and Arlo love musicals and animated musicals, tho Ansel is a big musical fan.

Marcellus is the only person who likes anchovies on pizza.

When he's nervous, Ansel plucks his feathers from his wings.

Alia goes crazy over catnip.

Bertie loves fruit smoothies and juice.

Tony, Furlecia and Marcellus are in a poly relationship.

Thinking more on it, I actually really love the idea of Ansel - after making an effort to actually get to know his son's friends and spend some time with all of them together - genuinely forming a friendship with Tony and Marcellus.

With Tony especially, I feel like the two of them would enjoy 'talking shop' together given that both of them are businessmen in a sense, with Ansel being more than happy to help Tony with his pizzeria expansion/franchising plans once he's ready to launch them. Really, just based off their interactions in 'Tony Baloney', I also just get the vibes that they'd get along well in general, having similar and slightly-eccentric personalities that mesh well with each other as well as a mutual respect. Could totally see them grabbing a drink together.

With Marcellus meanwhile, while I could see Ansel occasionally being confused by Marcellus'... everything or just being a bit put-off by the things this weird fish-man does, Ansel also respects his honesty and bluntness (because really, for as oblivious as Ansel can be at times, he probably knows he needs someone around him to tell it like it is - which is also something I could see him appreciating about Edmee once she moves to Seaside).

Marcellus, on the other hand, mostly just sees Ansel as a guy he can have fun messing with (and maybe get a few bucks off of) but at the same time - much like how he has a soft spot for people like Arlo and Bertie - he'll still drop the snark and be a decent enough friend for Ansel when he needs one. They're not close, but Marcellus appreciates that Ansel isn't just another rich jerk.

As for the rest of the friend-group, while he likes Bertie and Alia well enough and is glad that his son has them as friends, the only other person in the group that Ansel is relatively close to is Furlecia. I just feel like there was an instance where he has to get an emergency quick trim and touch-up from her, and while Ansel may have been a bit awkward about the whole thing at first, Furlecia's welcoming and relaxed nature made it easy for Ansel to relax as well, with the two of them probably indulging in some hot 'high society' gossip. (Furlecia also definitely appreciates the large tips that Ansel gives her whenever she cuts his hair)
