After looking over UnlovelyFrankenstein's oeuvre (and adding one of the T-shirts to my cart, NGL), a thought occurred to me that I haven't really dug into before: did Arthur Stuart even listen to or know anything about Curt Wild before Brian took him under his wing and brought him into the spotlight?
Curt may have gotten off the ground a bit earlier than Brian, as we see from the T.V. Eye scene. But the fame/infamy he experienced around that time was probably mostly through a niche audience in America, especially if Iggy Pop was meant to be a blueprint for Curt's career. Not among glam rock fans like Arthur in England.
Furthermore, we don't get much from Arthur's perspective to indicate that he discovered Curt Wild's music at all until later in the movie. The record shop flashback scene centers on Brian, and it's only when we get to the climactic scene underscored by Baby's On Fire that Arthur seems to be introduced to Curt, as a few grainy black-and-white photos in a newspaper. Granted, they're photos that get Arthur hot and bothered and ultimately contribute to him leaving home for good, but they're still just images on a page.
His introduction to Curt as a musician, performer, and a person of his own really seems to take place at the Death of Glitter concert, which leads me to think that up until then, the only exposure he's had to Curt is through the filter of Brian and his musical career. Which I find kind of fitting and heartbreaking all at once. Imagine knowing Curt just as Brian's other half - "Tracy and Hepburn for the 70s" as Mandy so wryly phrases it - seeing Brian "shot" at Arthur's first and only Maxwell Demon concert, and then being hit over the head by Gimme Danger. No wonder Arthur fell for Curt.
I guess a question that still lingers for me is, did he become a fan of Curt Wild and the Rats after that night and start listening to their records? Or was he just done with the whole scene after the Brian Slade fall-out? I'm sure there's a fic out there exploring this but I haven't found it yet.

I was thinking about things I love, and I decided I wanted to create a meme for seeing yourself represented in media for the first time (using that Arthur moment in Velvet Goldmine, natch)
Tumblr media
Here’s me watching One Mississippi and seeing a butch woman as the main character.
Tumblr media
Also all the things happening in Steven Universe.
Tumblr media
Particularly those giant women.
Anyway happy 25th anniversary to Velvet Goldmine and especially to Arthur 💜

the way curt and arthur's encounters are portrayed in velvet goldmine is just so fascinating and beautiful to me because the movie strikes a balance of making them so fleeting and impermanent and mundane, and yet it also emphasizes that they still meant something to both of them without declaring it outright. it would've been so easy to just make the rooftop scene a mindless fuck, with curt just turning to arthur as the nearest pretty face he saw in his grief and arthur being another lucky young nobody to sleep with a rockstar. and their night together is kind of like that, in that they never saw each other again for years, they moved on successfully, and who knows if curt even remembered arthur's name. but you get the sense from the smiles, laughter, and the video footage one of them kept that there *was* genuine comfort and joy there and it was a moment of peace and belonging. afterward, skipping forward to 1984, they make it out that curt is haunting arthur from the moment he starts the slade case. when he talks aloud about something from the past spooking him back his narration is mostly likely addressed to curt, and their split-second run in on the subway stairs happens immediately after. it's entirely unremarkable, a single glance exchanged, but it's enough for arthur to call back and live in the memory of them again. and when they finally talk in the underground bar it's the things that aren't said that are wonderful about it. i think curt does definitely remember arthur over the course of that conversation, but neither of them bring that up because they both know they're relics of that era and the dust doesn't need to be brushed off that part of the past. it's a conversation that should almost mean nothing and they treat each other like the near-complete strangers they are, but it's still just enough for them to understand one another and feel a little less alone, find some closure from that time. and it sets them up to collide again in the future, given that they've already been finding each other in small ways i think they'll both keep gravitating toward the other somehow. it's bittersweet, a kind of "smile because it happened" moment coming from two ships passing each other in the night, but all that's left unspoken and therefore what they one day might be able to put into words is what really makes their interactions
