Rhea Butcher is releasing a new album, “Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootleg”
Rhea Butcher is releasing a new album, “Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootleg”
Comedian Rhea Butcher has a new album coming out. The album, Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootleg, was recorded back in pre-pandemic times in Denver. In it, Butcher “talks about their experiences with everything from gender pronouns to puppy training, getting confounding parental advice to their love of gummies and more.” The album is being released by ASpecialThing Records and comes out on February…

This was a great special that we hoped you watched and bought already.
Whether you did or not, this seems to be an especially good weekend to get into Cameron Esposito’s latest hour, again or for the first time, that just released a special blue vinyl edition (available at your local record store).
Also, you can get the streaming version of pretty much every streaming platform as well.

A week from today, my first stand-up album comes out on aspecialthing Records. You can pre-order it on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and all the things right now. Or you can get a physical CD from the AST website.
I recorded it at the Mill in Iowa City, which was a really big deal for me. I started doing stand-up in Iowa City, while I was still in college. And the Mill is an amazing venue for stand-up and other live performance. But more importantly, it holds a lot of sentimental value for me.
I’ve had a handful of heroes in my life, but I never wanted to be more like anybody than I wanted to be like my Grandpa Dave. When I was a little kid, like in the late 80′s, he played mandolin and sang in a bluegrass band that also included my aunt and uncle. I attended one of their lives shows at the Mill with my family and afterwards, I had a cassette of the performance they recorded on the soundboard that I would listen to in my room. When my grandpa passed away from cancer my freshman year of high school, I basically wore out that tape, remembering him when he was before he got sick and placing myself back in that showroom at the Mill as an elementary school kid.
Later on, as my stand-up career progressed, I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to do my first album there at the Mill. On that same stage. Surrounded by friends and family, just like it was when he performed. I’m happy to say that finally happened. And it was fucking great.
I only did one show that night. And I didn’t want any edits. I wanted it to sound real. I like when live albums (especially stand-up albums) make you feel like you’re there. That’s essentially the point of stand-up - live with no net. If I wanted it perfect, I’d record it in a sound booth with multiple takes and no laughter and just let people laugh at home. Stand-up is (I think) supposed to be a little messy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely happy with how the performance went. But my favorite comedy albums/specials are stuff like Mitch Hedberg Strategic Grill Locations and Richard Pryor’s Live in Concert, which essentially starts during a Patti LaBelle intermission before most of the crowd is even in their seats. You get my point. But my other point is that I recorded it exactly where I wanted to and it sounds exactly how I wanted it to sound.
Also, AST is an amazing record label. Robyn Von Swank is an amazing photographer. She did the cover. And the back, if you get the CD. And Jen Tam is an amazing graphic artist. She did the layout.
So long story short, that’s my album. It’s for sale. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I hope you check it out. And I hope you like it. Thanks.

#BLESSED was the West Coast comedy supergroup of the mid Ought-Teens that were, in their own words, “never viral.”
They made a bunch of video sketches and did a few live shows, including one at Lost Weekend Video. Clare O’Kane just put out her first album, Megan Koester has one in the works, and Alison Stevenson released one not long ago.  A moment worth documenting, a primer for noobs.
