Sydney puts the fear of GOD into Whitney
Tumblr media
(The quality tanked I think)
May I propose a bit of friend group au lore? :3
Low dom!Whitney is the guard dog of the group, that was moreso a joke someone started but he did start caring for them at least a smidge. Otherwise, he's the friend you would suspect doesn't even like them because of his confusing ass attitude.
Corrupt!Sydney brought the group together. He was already friendly with Robin and after a few good right hooks, he was at least on semi-friendly terms with Whitney (gotta lower that dominance lol). He also kicked Kylar's door down one day with "Okay, bitch, we're reconciling right fucking now." and now they're friends again! :D
High Confidence!Robin is kinda the mom friend, she carries around bandaids for Whitney and Kylar in case of their general BS and reminds Sydney to get good rest because that man does not sleep, though she gets teased a little by the group for it. She's the most responsible of the group (used to be Sydney before he became a menace).
Kylar is having the time of his life in this AU, his will to live is back, woohoo! After reconciling with Sydney, he was introduced to Robin and slowly warmed up to her. He and Whitney are...alright, I guess after a while of walking on eggshells. He's the one that gets protected by the group lol.
Based on the actual game, Robin, Sydney, and Whitney can protect you from bullies; Whitney even grants a bit of status. So Kylar isn't exactly liked in this AU but people mostly back off now and he's so grateful, a little too grateful maybe.
Platonic yan Kylar mayhaps?
Whitney gets to chill in Sirris' shop, his other delinquent friends aren't welcome because they broke some stuff in the store. Robin's a little put off by it and Kylar is NOT going to Elk Street, so they just chill at the park
Robin's stands are poppin', she's got a whole staff now! Robin and Kylar make the drinks, Sydney handles cash and keeps stock, and Whitney brings in the costumers while keeping the creeps away.
Your PC(s) can fit in anywhere if you want them to. :v

How much worldbuilding do you have? Not because I love it or anything- (I've already noticed some of the bits you've sprinkled in regarding architecture and clothing but I would love to hear more if you want to share!! More on these or language or food or trade exports or-)
ooOOH WORDBUILDING. my beloved. especially for Golden Rings. i have some (?) that's fully fleshed out and fully coherent, absolutely! Pulling from some of your suggestions, so starting with trade, the Nether and the Overworld are obviously in constant contact and commerce with each other. That much is kinda obvious, since The End is actually sorta..limted access only? Compared to just poppin' up a Nether portal, at least. Most of the exports between the Nether and overworld areee typically building materials at a massive level, meaning that things like quartz, blackstone, all those fancy materials are constantly being traded and paid for and brought through. On a smaller level, though, the nether is also known for its apothecary-related materials for potion making, which is obviously based on gameplay. (Blaze rods, magma cream, etc.) so shops and other people also find trade sources within the nether for those sorts of things. hopefully that makes sense haha i also LOVE that you noticed my architecture lore. because god. i don't know a ton about it in technical terms— but if i've learned ANYTHING from this fandom, it's that a building can have a LOT to say and a lot of meaning. And you mentioned the gates the other day in your ao3 comment, but there's more! Like, the windows for example are pretty obvious, but they definitely have such open windows because the Overworld Royal line has 1. always had winged beings in it, so it was built for easy take off and landing's sake and 2. their entire thing is about being open and having access to the rest of the world. Whereas in the Nether, they're very iron-clad and defended. Mostly because they live in a place with many hostile beings that can do real damage (ahem. GHASTS.), but also because i think they have more of a protection priority and want that impression to carry through into the castle :) so you can see how their ideals and defenses might definitely clash in something like,, war. which i need to try and expand on sometime because i'm just flying by the seat of my pants with what they were actually fighting over lol.
BUT! one thing i can also say is that the Overworld's army is much bigger than the Nether's. This being because the Nether, who takes pride in defense and such, trains their soldiers and knights to be multi-faceted. They can handle a lot that is thrown at them, and they're very diverse since they technically have to consider fighting on multiple kinds of landscape/in different weather/etc. So, while they may lack in number, they make up for in a really intensely strong and adaptable force of soldiers. But the Overworld doesn't really have that, not as much as the Nether. So, they have power in numbers and larger, oddly complex weaponry. uhhHH i haven't thought TOO much about language aside from a few things that are not at all coherent in my brain! but here's one thing, i suppose! :D People from the Nether or the End will often use "Void" instead of "Gods" like people in the overworld do. Obviously language is fluid and exchanged, so this isn't a fixed concept. but depending on how close you are to a town/village with a nether portal, there will be lots of different languages/slang the closer you get, because it's likely those who live in that town have visited/lived in the nether at some point and have picked up a few things while they were there. i just thought that was kind of an interesting lil tid bit. annnd i'm gonna shut up now before i write a whole ass essay in your ask response LMAO dude,, you really know how to get me goin' with this story,, woooughh but thank you for asking!! i really love talking about it and answering the questions so sfksj

I get what your trying to say with changing tastes, and I agree with you. It just sometimes feels hard for me because while I'm trying my hand at enjoying some tragic things, in the past its because fandoms pressured me into doing so or else I got labeled or got some passive aggressive comments which basically boiled down to "its okay, but not really. and you should kinda feel bad"
now I'm not blaming you for that nor I am I saying everyone who's trying to help me is a bully but what want me to try was a friend I met
for example, I had hated RWBY's story as much as I loved the characters, and certain concepts and ships I wanted but dropped it due to V3 and onward with Pyrrha Nikos being tragic and put a bitter taste in my mouth for tragic things onward, my friend although fine with it, made sure I was aware my reasons were subjective which I agreed, but he didn't demonize subjective feelings and in fact related to me with a similar scenario in his personal life and how he'd learned to deal with it and tried to help me understand.
He gave me judgement whatsoever and gave me support with what I did like as much as he didn't like it. So while I no longer like RWBY, I get the point of those stories and try my luck elsewhere. But it was when someone treated me like a person and didn't wag the finger at me was what allowed me to give these sorts of things another chance.
But my experience with fandoms, at least The RWBY fandom, is that there's very little of that and mostly a superiority contest. And I don't understand why its so hard for certain people on the internet be the same as my friend.
Sorry to rant, and you don't need to answer, I just want to give my opinion on this
I'm going to answer because I appreciate your thoughts! I think the problem you're pointing out is valid: even if someone has something constructive to say, they don't always say it in a constructive way, or out of selfless motives.
Modern fandoms (which is the same thing as "modern audiences") are, in large majority, the kind of people who are watching something to be entertained, not watching it to be edified.
When you stop thinking of a story as "just entertainment" and start thinking of it as "a lesson someone is trying to teach me," then things take a different turn. Audiences can suddenly try to change their tastes based on that, like I said. They say to themselves "this is a lesson someone's trying to teach me; I might not be used to or comfortable with how they're saying it, but the lesson might be worth it, so I'll GET used to how they're saying it."
OR, audiences can stop finding their "sense of self" in a story, and therefore get wayyy less offended when someone doesn't like the same thing they like, or worse, when someone claims to like it more than they do! 😱
I think you're right about that. The point I'm making is, modern fandom doesn't even really like the stories they claim to like--they just like themselves, and the things that make them feel entertained, distracted, uplifted, knowledgeable, or cool. That's why you get fanfiction where authors write their "favorite" character completely out-of-character from the original material--because they never really liked that character for what it was, they just liked the tiny pieces of themselves that they could associate with that character, and re-wrote that character to only be those things.
That's why "comfort characters" are a thing. That's why "ship wars" are a thing. It's all self-focused. And there's a place for some of that. It's okay to go to a movie because you know it'll make you feel hopeful or happy. But you'll get even more benefit out of analyzing those feelings and why the movie makes you feel that way. Is it because you were beginning to think about the world in a dark, wrong way and the movie gently corrected you with its message? (Like Mary Poppins Returns does for me!)
Or do you simply feel hopeful because...maybe a character in the movie does something wrong, but the movie rewards them for it instead of punishing them, and you want to be able to relate to that? Or are you just distracted? After all, Rome invented panem et circus for entertain the people...so they could mistreat the people while they were "distracted."
Anyway. I wanted to keep it brief but I'm not that disciplined in my own style of communication yet! 😅 I think your friend did you a good turn! I've only seen a bit of RWBY, but if it helped you to think more clearly about a part of life that you maybe weren't thinking clearly about before, awesome--it did what stories are meant to do.
P.S. People like me can fall into the same trap that I just accused "fandom" people of doing. We can feel so good about ourselves for having the "correct" analysis or view of a story that we mistreat other people. Which basically hamstrings our goal of "changing people's minds about stories." Because we accidentally let "make people think we're smart and right" become the goal. So this is a good reminder for me, too!

PLAYING: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Tumblr media
I don't know exactly how it happens...but every now and then I NEED to play World of Warcraft. I get obsessed. I can't think about playing games, making games, eating, bathing, or my kids names until I've gotten it out of my system. After nearly a week--I felt good about moving on...or at least, I committed myself.
So--no more playing games. Time to play games.
I've lost quite a bit of steam for playing FFVIIR. It's started to feel like a chore. Which is not how games should be. I think (mostly) the issue is my strong understanding of the original's story and pacing. Every new thing they add, like fighitng Rude, feels like a hinderance. But, because the game is now a complete project and not a single chapter--I understand needing/wanting to expand on characters that are significant later on.
Still...I'm tired. instead of being excited for what comes next, I'm anxious of what hoops I'll have to jump through.
Take the broken down highway on the way to Wall Market. It's the long way, though I though Aerith said it was a short cut. Hell, I can't remember why we needed a "shortcut". But in the original, this highway was a single frame. Now it's a 45 minute segment with "puzzles". I have to give them props for the Robo-hand puzzles, in that they brought back this random robot hand from the original. But the puzzle was pretty 1 note. And while I felt compelled to look for secrets, I loathed all the extra time it cost me. Every new challenge, secret, and battle made me shout at the TV: "This was supposed to be one frame: ONE FRAME!" Because I know at the other end of this Hallway is the Wall Market, filled with rich characters, story development, and a few twists. And this highway was in the way.
Makes me think of Disney Lines. They're very stylized for the rides. They know you're going to be waiting 45+ minutes to experience an old-ass Peter Pan ride that really isn't even as fun as the monorail you took to get to the park, so they decorate the lines to make them fun and part of the experience. That's how this highway felt: a 45+ wait to get to the good stuff. But the wait isn't necessary! There's no reason to distract me from getting on with the story. Nothing to gain (but XP). And the dialog between Cloud and Aerith wasn't interesting enough to fill lonely trek.
Finally in Wall Market and I did some exploring. It was a neat area. It was cool how they took familiar places from the original and brought them back while also adding in new sections to give it a more lived-in experience. I also thought the handling of the music was interesting. I really wanted to hear the classic Wall Market Baseline, but I can't fault them for making the music both diagetic and "poppin".
The story flow is a little different here. Beyond Corneo, there's now a trio of characters that represent captains of black market industry. Still being frustrated by the highway, I wasn't super receptive to this Trio--but I'm coming around. It's helping build up legend of Corneo more so than the original managed. The hand-massage sequence was quite weird. I wasn't sure how I was supposed to respond to this, emotionally. BUT--it did make me want a hand massage.
Then the introduced the Battle Arena. I'm so tired of battle arenas. Nothing is more lazy in a game than battle arenas. I was thankful the original's battle arena was almost exclusively side quest. Dragon Quest XI did have an interesting story surrounding a battle arena champion...anyway--I beat it. The "haunted house" was kinda funny. I don't know why I didn't question it in the original--but what a wacky enemy!?!
Aerith was getting dressed, so I did side quests. I was ready to get this over with and went to pick up Aerith, nope--need more battle arena, FFS!
I'm also a little confused that Cloud isn't dressing up. Does this version not have cross dressing? Or am I just not there yet.
Time will tell.
