Jay Steffy, Interior, Circa 1980
I can't find much on Jay Steffy's design philosophy but I read his 1980s interior as postmodern.
"Postmodernism had begun as a radical fringe movement in the 1970s, but became the dominant look of the 1980s, the 'designer decade'. Vivid colour, theatricality and exaggeration: everything was a style statement. Whether surfaces were glossy, faked or deliberately distressed, they reflected the desire to combine subversive statements with commercial appeal. Magazines and music were important mediums for disseminating this new phase of Postmodernism. The work of Italian designers – especially the groups Studio Alchymia and Memphis – was promoted across the world through publications like Domus. Meanwhile, the energy of post-punk subculture was broadcast far and wide through music videos and cutting-edge graphics. This was the moment of the New Wave: a few thrilling years when image was everything." ( 1 )
"The postmodern outlook is characterized by self-referentiality, epistemological relativism, moral relativism, pluralism, irony, irreverence, and eclecticism; it rejects the "universal validity" of binary oppositions, stable identity, hierarchy, and categorization." ( 2 )

"Less is More" "Less is a Bore" LOL:
"If the Modernist movement could be epitomized in a single phrase, many would choose Mies van der Rohe’s succinct utterance, “less is more.” Three authoritative words, three stern syllables: The slogan came to embody the very architectural language it engendered, spawning a whole generation of architects who sought to strip back buildings to their bare essentials.
Mies and many of his Modernist peers advocated the abolition of the superfluous, arguing that ornamentation was a distraction from the beauty of structural rationality, or — worse still — an unethical symbol of extravagance.
Of course, as with any ideological action, there is a reaction, and this is where American architect Robert Venturi came in. Together with his wife Denise Scott Brown, the late Robert Venturi strove to rewrite the book (sometimes quite literally) on modern architectural design, challenging the principles of the Modernist movement with experimentation and witty provocation.
Venturi pinpointed Mies’ sound bite as a key source of influence and countered with his own, simultaneously playful and cutting in its candor: “Less is a bore.”
Venturi’s instantly memorable quote — its fame perhaps only surpassed by Mies’ oxymoronic original — became the mantra for an entire architectural movement. Postmodernism ushered in an age of warmer architecture, buildings full of character that displayed a greater sensitivity toward context, urban landscapes ingrained with more humor and humility than the earnest monuments of 20th-century Modernism.
... For [Venturi], this was the architecture of gentle anarchy, of free-spirited optimism, of unbridled joy." ( 3 )

Post 878
Tyler Merkle, Ohio inmate A691559, born 1989, incarceration intake in November 2016 at age 27, sentenced to 5 years, released from custody January 2021
Sexual Battery
Former Chardon Schools’ tutor and assistant coach Tyler P. Merkle admitted in August 2016 to having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 15-year-old Chardon High School student.
Geauga County Common Pleas Court Judge David Fuhry sentenced the now 27-year-old to five years in prison and fined him $4,000 for his conduct.
In so doing, the court adopted the recommendation of prosecutors that Merkle be given 60 months in prison on each of four counts of sexual battery, which the sentences to run together. Fuhry also imposed a $1,000 fine on each of the counts.
Merkle had agreed earlier to plead guilty to four counts of sexual battery, a high-tier felony of the third degree. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to dismiss eight other felony counts at sentencing.
Fuhry told Merkle his actions were not just socially unacceptable, they were criminal.  “It was felonious; these aren’t misdemeanors,” he said. “They are sex offenses. Sex offenses are treated seriously.”
Those sex offenses branded Merkle a Tier III sex offender, noted Fuhry, requiring him to register in person with the sheriff in the county in which he resides every 90 days for life.
“I take note of the collateral (reporting) consequences, they are severe,” he said. “I take note, too, that this was a sex offense visited on a minor and you knew her age. This wasn’t a case of mistaken age.”
Fuhry told Merkle he knew his conduct was illegal, because he researched it and knew he could go to prison for it. And, even after he looked up the potential consequences, he added Merkle persisted in his conduct.
“That’s what we call blatant disregard for the law,” said Fuhry, adding Merkle presumable was mature enough to understand right from wrong. “You knew this was as wrong as wrong could be.”
The judge also noted, before pleading guilty when Merkle violated conditions of his bond by having contact with the victim through a digital music application called Spotify.
While the court recognized the many positive things Merkle has done in his life, “they don’t cancel out what happened here.”
Although he had provided a written statement to the probation department, Merkle told Fuhry he was sorry for his actions.
“I apologize to everyone involved that had no reason to be involved because of my mistake. From the top down, from (the victim) to her family, to my family, my friends, the community, the school district, the football team, the coaches, everyone,” he said. “I caused this and it could have been avoided with better judgment.”
Defense counsel Rick Perez requested Merkle avoid prison time and be sentenced to community control.
While Perez told Fuhry that Merkle was not making any excuses for his conduct, he pointed out the victim was the one who made the initial contact.
“He didn’t teach her, he didn’t coach her, he didn’t have her in study hall,” Perez said, adding Merkle knew the victim’s brother and that is why she texted him.
Merkle texted her back and during the summer of 2015 the texting became more frequent, Perez said.
“In the fall, they started seeing each other,” he explained. “He realizes now he should have put the brakes on everything. He let it go a little too far and all of a sudden he fell in love with her.”
Perez told Fuhry if the victim were present in the courtroom, he would assume she would not be asking the court to impose any type of penalty on his client.
“I know her parents feel differently and that’s their right,” he acknowledged.
Geauga County Prosecutor Jim Flaiz said there are consequences for criminal conduct and having sexual conduct with a minor is a serious offense, especially when the defendant is in a position of trust such as a teacher.
“When you’re in a position of authority like that and you take advantage of the situation and manipulate a young girl into a sexual relationship, that’s really bad conduct,” he said. “That’s exactly what happened here.”
Added Flaiz, “This is a 15-year-old girl who’s manipulated by the defendant and engaged in a long-term sexual relationship with him.”
The prosecutor told Fuhry the damage to the victim is probably irreparable.
Merkle initially was placed on administrative leave from school, where he served as a part-time tutor, study hall monitor and assistant football coach.
The inappropriate conduct occurred between Dec. 1, 2015, and April 12, 2016.
Subsequent appeals were unsuccessful.

Mécia Lopes de Haro, Queen of Portugal (wife of King Sancho II of Portugal)
Tumblr media
Reign:  1240 – 1246
Mécia Lopes de Haro or Mencía López de Haro (c.1215–1270) was a Castilian noblewoman, the wife successively of count Álvaro Pérez de Castro and of King Sancho II of Portugal. The subsequent annulment of her marriage by Pope Innocent IV has led to disagreement over whether she should be counted among the queens consort of Portugal. She played a central role in the Portuguese political crisis of 1245.
Mécia Lopes was born in Biscay, the daughter of Lopes Díaz II de Haro, lord of Biscay, and of Urraca Alfonso of León. Her mother was an illegitimate daughter of Alfonso IX of León. She was thus niece of the reigning king, Ferdinand III of Castile.
Tumblr media
Mécia was married on 29 September 1234 to Álvaro Pérez de Castro, a magnate involved in the expansion of the Castilian kingdom into the region of Cordoba, whose first marriage to Aurembiaix, Countess of Urgell had been annulled in 1228, while Mécia's sister Teresa married Nuño, Count of Rousillon, a kinsman of the powerful House of Lara.
These consanguineous marriages were the cause of a dispute between Ferdinand III and Mecia's father Lopes Diaz II Haro and husband, the monarch confiscating some of the groom's lands. It was peacefully resolved through the mediation of Queens Berengaria of Castile and Elisabeth of Hohenstaufen, Ferdinand's mother and wife, respectively.
While the marriage proved childless, it did place Mécia in the midst of the struggles on the Cordoban frontier. After taking Cordoba, the king returned to Toledo, leaving Álvaro in charge of the stronghold of Martos. The abandonment of agriculture due to the conflict led to a localized famine, and Álvaro was forced to journey to the royal court to plead for assistance. The king granted him the equivalent of viceregal powers, as well as monetary support.  However, in his absence his nephew, Tello, and the troops left behind decided to launch a military incursion into the territory of the enemy, Mécia was left virtually unprotected in Martos. The Moorish ruler of Arjona took advantage of this opportunity to invade the recently captured lands. In response, Mécia sent word to the missing troops, and according to Spanish historian Lafuente she then dress in soldiers' arms and paraded around the battlements. Having anticipated facing women and not armed men, the Moors slowed their approach and took defensive measures, allowing the missing Christian troops under Tello to return. They then launched a directed attack under the command of Diego Perez de Vargas which broke through the center of the enemy lines, dispersing them. On hearing of the danger under which his wife had been placed, Álvaro made to return, but became ill and died of an unnamed disease at Orgaz in 1239, or as some have it, 1240.
Mécia married again to King Sancho II of Portugal, son of Afonso II of Portugal and his wife, Queen Urraca of Castile. The legitimacy of this union has been contested, first by Portuguese historian António Brandão, who has been followed by several subsequent scholars in considering her a mistress, but that they married is documented by a papal bull Sua nobis of Pope Innocent IV, and is accepted by most historians. The date and place of the marriage is uncertain. It does not appear in the work of Rodrigo of Toledo, completed in March 1243 but also omitting Portuguese royal marriages from the year before, while the papal bull mentions it in 1245, suggesting it should be placed between these dates.
Tumblr media
From the start, there were several reasons for the marriage to be portrayed in a bad light. She brought with her from her foreign land the specter of domination by the powerful neighboring Kingdom of Castile. Further, since she was a widow and the king was her mother's first cousin, she deviated from the ideal of a virgin bride and tainted the marriage with consanguinity. She was not a royal princess and had no direct connections in either Portugal or Castile, whose king abandoned her after the death of her husband. She exacerbated her political isolation by surrounding herself with Castilian-raised servants and maids, making it difficult for Portuguese courtiers to use Mécia as an avenue for approaching the king. She was thus quickly rejected by nobility and populace. The degree of the discontent can be seen in the oft-repeated claim that the king was "bewitched by the arts of D. Mécia de Haro."
The problems in Portugal predated the arrival of Mécia. With the years of Christian conquests in the wars with the Moors, the king had taken some liberties as the country enjoyed peace and the king basked in the glow and pride of military success. However, the king then decided to replace the counselors of the royal court with his military companions, effectively instituting a military dictatorship. This change proved fatal, as it embroiled the council in conflicts that tarnished the image of the king, and led to what some historians have called an anarchy. Mécia thus entered the Portuguese stage at the start of a period of political instability, a civil war that eventually resulted in the deposition of her husband, and the coincidence led to her being blamed for his downfall. Later chroniclers have gone so far as to suggest that Sancho was a good king until his marriage, and his subsequent difficulties were due to her bad influences. However, such writings are biased by the need among his successors to justify his deposition.
The Portuguese clergy rose against the marriage, not so much because of direct opposition but as an indirect way of embarrassing the king in order to hasten his fall. Their contempt for the king arose from various perceived injustices, such as the revocation of a grant to the monastery of Bouco made by Afonso I of Portugal and confirmed by Afonso II.
Pope Innocent IV addressed a papal bull to Afonso, Count of Boulogne, brother to the king and aspirant to the throne, in which he requested that Afonso raise troops from Boulogne to assist the church in the Holy Land. Given the plans of the Portuguese clergy and the pope, this seems simply to have been a pretext to allow Afonso to bring armed men to Lisbon. While Afonso was heir to Sancho, this could change at any time were the childless Mécia to produce an heir and so he set about separating the spouses. He focused on their consanguinity, both descending from Afonso I of Portugal, a relationship within a degree prohibited by the church but tolerated in the Iberian social context. Afonso took this to the pope, who issued a bull that decried the state of the kingdom, and backed by complaints from the Portuguese bishops, threatened that unless Sancho live up to his responsibilities, "appropriate measures" would be taken. Sancho refused to repudiate his wife, and the pope then carried through with his threat, annulling the marriage.
On 24 July and 1 August 1245, two bulls were promulgated, the first addressed to the barons of the kingdom, the second to the clergy, which decreed the deposition of the king. The king sought help from his brother Afonso, the very man whose maneuvering had led to the deposition. There then occurred an event that directly involved Mécia. A nobleman named Raimundo Viegas de Portocarreiro, accompanied by the men of the Count of Boulogne, entered the royal palace at Coimbra and snatched her from the royal bedchamber, taking her to the palace at Vila Nova de Ourém. Sancho, embarrassed at the kidnapping and finding himself powerless to recover his wife, abdicated and fled to Toledo, dying in 1248. His will did not name his wife, suggesting that he may have thought her complicit in the kidnapping, a claim also hinted at by later chroniclers although no evidence is found in contemporary sources.
Tumblr media
Following her kidnapping, Mécia took up residence in Ourém. There is documentation of Mécia making several donations there, and she was protected by troops of the court, with which she retained good relations. The alcaide of the town, Inigo de Ortiz, has a Biscayan name, suggesting that she had appointed him. According to tradition, she held lands at Torres Novas, Santa Eulália and Ourém, and a marginal note in a contemporary document indicates that they were held by Mécia.
Tumblr media
Then her fate becomes less certain. Rui de Pina, the chronicler of Sancho II, says that she left Ourém for Galicia, which seems unlikely. There is a surviving document, dating 24 February 1257, which while not specifying the location, reports Mécia and her relative Rodrigo Gonzalez acting as executors to Teresa Aires, making certain gifts to the convent of Benavides, suggesting that at the time she resided in the area of Castile. An infante Fernando, who lived there, became sole heir of Mécia, and also disputed Sancho's inheritance. According to tradition, Mécia died in 1270 at Palencia, where she held lands, and she was buried at Nájera in the Benedictine convent of Santa Maria, in the Chapel of the Cross. Her tomb, supported by four lions and bearing the arms of Portugal, features a woman in the dress of Biscay.

maximillian spent his childhood doing lots of traveling for his parents’ work and for their humanitarian efforts. he grew up very well cultured and it shows
he also demonstrated unusually high intelligence and recollection abilities, prattling off stats and financial terms his parents used around him as early as four years old
that’s also around that time that his little brother was born. he was an ‘oopsie’ baby but maximillian just loved him twice as hard because he was just sweet that way.
anyways so maxxie started going by maxxie because his name was too much of a mouthful for his lil bro and they were :’) inseparable
somewhere in his childhood, maxxie got tested for his atypical language / comprehension abilities and that’s where they found out he’s got an eidetic memory.
they watched his iq grow exponentially and tbh,,, they were thrilled
what a better heir than someone who remembers every single fcking detail of every single thing? already at age 10 he practically could have been hired on lol
you get the idea -- anyways, he focused all his energies on learning stupid facts because for all his big brain, he’s incredibly socially awkward as many geniuses are. he didn’t have many friends besides his little brother and spent most of his time in their library reading and rereading all the books he could find.
the st. perez family has been based in the upper east side for a long ass time but do so much travel that it’s always like ‘oh i’m back from ____ insert country here but in two weeks i’ll be gone again’ so if your character is from literally anywhere? probably could have met maxxie.
it ain’t his secret but two years ago, his beloved baby brother od’ed at a party hosted by margot & carter. he was there when it happened and was in the ambulance ride over and essentially watched the person he loved most have a complete and total collapse. we’ll unpack that more over time but let’s just say it’s given maxxie a lot of trauma to deal with and a lot of rage he doesn’t know how to process
PERSONALITY AND PASSIONS
definitely socially awkward. think reid from criminal minds just missing cues with an inability to ‘read the room’. what he lacks in social graces, he supplies in absolutely useless facts.
a lot of ‘uh... so did you know that on average, 12 newborns are given to the wrong parents every day? messy huh!’
some of his favorite things are travel documentaries and true crime podcasts but basically anything where he can glean large quantities of information to occupy his ever restless mind
i’d say about 95% of him is fragile, gullible and unsure. he wasn’t bullied but he definitely didn’t have a ton of friends throughout school. in fact a lot of the time, his younger brother was probably the one who got him his friend group bc i picture him as more the charming reckless party boy sort who would understand maxxie’s,,, awkwardness
brother would get invited to parties, he’d invite maxxie. they were inseparable and i’m mad at myself for that character point
but that 5%? the 5% that isn’t soft and awkward and lovable? grudges. when maxxie feels something, he feels it passionately and without any chance of budging. the thing about an eidetic memory is that you remember literally everything. details you may want to suppress are conjured to mind without even wanting them.
essentially a living source of receipts -- boy could be gossip girl or at least the robin to her batman
MISC
would have graduated st. jude’s early but stayed around to help as like teacher’s aides and things. also kind of needed the social exposure
experiences nightmares hardcore, most of which center around reliving his brother’s OD
probably holds stupid records like 10th fastest person in the world to solve a rubiks’ cube or 5th to know the digits of pi
he’s got serious wanderlust and gets restless when he hasn’t traveled outside of new york for long stretches of time
has a fascination with the stars, space and black holes. he likes the idea of infinity and endlessness because he feels like his head is an endless abyss that stores information without filling
he’s breezing through college courses currently set to graduate early with a degree in psychology but plans to pursue grad school and a doctorate before potentially adding math or a language degree as well.
relationship wise, he’s definitely not an avid fan of dating. he’s just not good at it. flirting makes him squirm but he also craves companionship and is a bi prince so i mean i guess date him? love him? cherish him!
that being said i do picture him having maybe one or two soft innocent relationships over the past 6 or so years so hmu. ( still a virgin though -- just food for thought )
PLOTS

Verenski and Felder Flip Script on Poison Lone Star Tour
Tumblr media
Mickey Verenski came from behind to win the 69-player, amateur 9-ball division, and Will Felder followed suit, in the 64-player, open 9-ball division, at the seventh stop on the 2019 Poison Lone Star Billiards Tour. In the finals, Verenski overcame Lazaro “Little Laz” Martinez, III, to capture his first, division title, while Felder dodged James Davis, Sr., securing his first, open division title.

Will Felder
On August 2nd-3rd, 2019, Tour title sponsor, Poison by Predator Cues, sponsors Cyclop Pool Balls, APA of North Harris County, Vapor Fiend, and Outsville Billiards, facilitated a successful event at Skinny Bob’s Billiards in Round Rock, Texas, drawing one hundred and six players, and paying out over $6,400 in prize money.  The Tour would like to than John and Sue Cielo, and staff, for hosting another stellar event.
In the amateur 9-ball division, Mickey Verenski  of Temple, Texas stormed the field, claiming wins over Emmy Esquivel, 5-1, Jude Rosenstock, 5-2, Mickey Woinicki, 5-3, and first time player, Jenna Bishoff, 5-3, while Dennis Hadley defeated Chuck Adams, 5-4, Matt Wong, 5-4, Jerry Nava, 5-2, and Michael Taylor, 5-0. Lazaro Martinez, III bested Rolando Gonzalez, 5-2, Lazaro Martinez, Jr., 5-1, Ricardo Espinosa, 5-4, and Elijah Hughes, 5-3, while newcomer, Ray Porter, denied Bobby Holder, 5-3, first-timer,  Aaron Gomez, 5-2, J.D. Black, 5-3, and Andrew Rodriguez, 5-3. After suffering a 5-3 loss to Wong in the second round, local favorite, John Wright, booked eight wins to reach the money, including victories over Roy Muniz, 5-1, Samal Ghimire, 5-2, and Alex Avery, 5-3. In similar fashion, Steve Zuniga won four matches to reach the final sixteen, defeating Leonard Lee, 5-2, Wally Escobar, 5-4, Steve Espinosa, 5-1, and Woinicki, 5-3. Felder blitzed Nava, 5-0, while Mike Oosse stopped Carlos Cruz, 5-3. Austin Abernathy dusted off Daniel Perez, 5-2, and Espinosa eliminated Wong, 5-3. Rounding out the final eight on the west side, Carl Honey overwhelmed Pablo Espinosa, 5-1, and Black upset Rosenstock, 5-2.  The east side final four witnessed Martinez, III defeat Porter, 5-4, while Hadley dusted off Verenski, 5-1, to face off for their first, Tour hot seat match-up. Little Laz was on fire, running through Hadley, 5-1, securing his first, winners’ side seat. Back on the west side, Wright was on a roll, defeating Zuniga, 5-0, and Hughes, 5-0, while Oosse ended Felder, 5-3, in turn, losing to Rodriguez, 5-3. Abernathy denied Espinosa, 5-3, but fell to Bishoff, 5-0. Black blocked Honey, 5-3, and Taylor, 5-1, earning his spot in the final eight. Another round concluded, with Wright claiming his final win against Rodriguez, 5-1, falling in turn to Verenski, 5-2.  Bishoff ended Black, 5-4, and Porter, 5-2, but faltered against Verenski, 5-2. Verenski redeemed himself with Hadley, earning himself a finals rematch with Martinez, III. In the first set, tied at 3-3, Verenski kicked in the one-ball and ran out. In the eighth game, Verenski hooked himself in the middle of the rack, kicked in the five-ball, and ran out, securing the first set. In overtime, the junior player maintained his composure, as his opponent’s momentum grew stronger. Verenski shut-out Little Laz in the second set, 5-0, to win his first, Poison Lone Star Tour, amateur 9-ball division title.

In the open 9-ball division, newcomer Mike Oosse of Marble Falls, Texas stormed through winners’ side with wins over Austin Abernathy, Steve Zuniga, 6-5, Ralph Cardona, 6-2, and David Henson, 6-3, while James Davis, Sr., ousted Mickey Woinicki, 6-2, Alex Avery, 6-1, Henry Rocha, 6-3, and Andrew Rodriguez, 6-3. Elijah Hughes tagged Jimmy Krone, 6-4, J.D. Black, 6-4, Matt Wong, 6-5, and Lazaro Martinez, III, 6-5, while Eric Aicinena defeated Pete Baza, 6-3, Marshall Butler, 6-1, Dennis Hadley, 6-3, and first-timer, Samal Ghimire, 6-2. Following a second round hit from Daniel Perez, 6-1, Felder tore through the west side, sending home Honey, Lazaro Martinez, Jr., 6-3, and Wally Escobar, 6-4, to reach the final sixteen. Felder went on to extinguish Rocha, 6-5, and Martinez, III, 6-3, while Cardona closed out Verenski, 6-3, but crumbled against Ghimire, 6-3. Also reaching the final eight, Perez dealt final blows to Hadley and Henson, 6-5. San Antonio’s Bob Pyles lost his first match to Ghimire, 6-3, and caught a gear on the one –loss side. Pyles eliminated Jason Edgerton, 6-5, Zuniga, Vance Rodriguez, 6-2, Wong, 6-1, Jacob Case, 6-2, and Rodriguez, 6-4, for a total of seven wins to reach the final eight. While the west side narrowed, winners’ side final four action was underway. The indomitable Davis, Sr. defeated Oosse, and Aicinena stopped Hughes in his tracks, by the same score, 6-4. Having won multiple division titles between them, once again, Davis, Sr. and Aicinena found themselves in a hot seat play-off.  Davis, Sr. handled Aicinena with ease, ending his winners’ side run, 6-1. Back on the east side, Felder took care of Oosse, 6-1, while Hughes denied Pyles his eighth win. Felder was firing on all cylinders, edging out hill-hill wins over Hughes and Aicinena, to meet Davis, Sr. in the finals. Vying for his first open division title, Felder was up against a four-time, open division champion. In the first set, Davis, Sr., chipped away at Felder, but the long-time Tour player held his own. Ultimately, Felder bested Davis, Sr. both sets, by a score of 6-5, to capture his first, Poison Lone Star Tour, open division title.
