On This Day in F1: March 7th
Present: Saudi Arabia Day 1
History: 2004 Australian Grand Prix
The second race weekend of the year begins on March 7th as rumors continue to spiral and the integrity of the sport is brought into question after question. It’s been a disappointing and frustrating few days when it comes to Formula 1.
But we did get the first sessions of F1 Academy today — free practice and qualifying. Not only are sessions live-streamed on F1TV, but also on YouTube for free.
F2 is also in Saudi Arabia for the weekend and by the looks of it, Prema is getting back to the front after a disappointing start in Bahrain.
20 years ago, the Formula 1 circus was not in Saudi Arabia, but down under for the Australian Grand Prix.
Tumblr media
The 2004 season opening race was important for many reasons.
One: It was the first win in Michael Schumacher’s campaign for his seventh (and last) world championship — a race that he dominated by starting from pole position and leading every lap.
Tumblr media
(Image from Wiki)
Two: Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello finished 1-2 which gave Ferrari its first 1-2 finish since the 2002 Japanese Grand Prix.
Tumblr media
Three: Australia 2004 was the 150th race for the McLaren-Mercedes partnership. But it was not a successful race as McLaren was only able to score 1 point. Kimi Raikkonen had to retire the car on lap 9 due to engine/spin issues. Meanwhile, David Coulthard was able to score a point for the team when he finished in 8th place and 1 lap down from the leader.

Previous: Mar. 2 — 2010 Team US F1 Shuts Down
Next: Mar. 8 — Saudi Arabia Day 2
On This Day in F1 Masterlist
If you want some Sunday motorsport, IndyCar has its first race in St. Petersburg that starts at 12pm EST. NASCAR is in Phoenix which starts at 3:30pm EST. MotoGP is also racing on Sunday in Qatar at 1pm EST.

One of my favourite interview from Dani has to be 'La Caja de DAZN'. This is an out of the box interview were DAZN asked close people to the riders to give them important objects to allow them to talk about the rider's career. The rider's can talk as much or as little as they want and sometimes, one object can have more than one meaning.
Tumblr media
Those are the objects in Dani's box and what it meant.
Tumblr media
That glue represents Antonio (he's a carpenter). It meant his job and the money they need for Dani to compete. It also represents Dani's origin as a rider and the passion for bikes that share. The first bike, the miniature bikes to play...
Tumblr media
This represents Basilia and a period of time. Apparently people saw Dani on the street an remember Dani as the Colacao guy. The story behind the add is real. Basi has been the person to stay with Dani the whole time he has been in the hospital.
Tumblr media
Dani is not very fan of football, but he's a Barça fan. The importance is in the detail that this shirt belongs to Iniesta. In a Catalan GP Dani wore a racing boots with Iniesta's name due to Alpinestar doing a special edition related to the World Cup. Dani choose Iniesta due to his values in and out of the pitch.
This also helped to talk about his retirement. How he needed it, but he still misses it.
Tumblr media
Dani's 125cc winning shirt (2003). Dani says people still have it and show it to him.
They mention that Puig told him that after 5 years with the same bike it was time for Dani to finally win the championship (or something) with this bike. They always had it present in their mind.
Dani explains that the 2 stoke bikes and the learning curve. First it was learning how the two strokes worked, then how to be fast and do the proper setting of the bike and on top of that the process to get the 'good' parts. So when you do the good results you get the parts. According to Dani, currently riders all have the same materials properly set up.
Tumblr media
This represents both 250cc years (and championship) Dani did. For Dani is a glorious period of time. He had no pre-season and no real training that winter break. Added with his short stature and lack of weight, people weren't really expecting a lot, but Dani settled very well with the bike and the category. He did so well that he actually won the first race.
He also confesses that he has this bike (250cc) at his house.
It's also mentioned his rivals in that category. In 2004 it was Sebas Porto and in 2005 it was Jorge, Casey and Andrea (Dovizioso)
And not so well know detail of this bike is that there was a special sticker that was Puig's idea (yes Puig had a big hand and influence in young Dani).
Tumblr media
Dani didn't reveal what it was, but it was something between Alberto and his dad. What people though that C.N.O meant Centro Nacional de Operaciones (National Centre of Operations), but Dani said is not really that, it's close but not that.
Tumblr media
Do I need to say this is a mini-replica of Jorge's X-Fuera helmet?
This bring us back to 2005, when Spanish media sometimes talked more about 250cc (and Dani-Jorge battles/rivalry) than MotoGP. Dani notes that their 250cc rivalry moved and shifted when they moved to MotoGP. For him, in 250cc it was them (managers and riders) talking to the media and responding through the media more than track rivalries (not that it lacked), but in MotoGP in was more on track than media.
Dani confesses that for them sometimes it wasn't about who was going to win the race, just to be in front of the other because they had other rivals on track such and Vale or Casey.
This took a trip to memory lane where Dani explains how he and Jorge meet, then become rivals and finally friends. They also explain the infamous handshake in Jerez 2008.
Tumblr media
This is tape to explain the injuries. They mention the one in Australian GP in 2003 when he broke both ankles. Dani is a rider that didn't crash a lot, but unfortunately, he broke every time they did.
This lead to Dani's neardy side, which is that he apparently calculate the number of crashes per year he had. According to his data, he did it 2-3 times per year test including (5 or 6 the year he crashed the most). And for half of those crashes he ended up in the hospital (Poor Dani had to have surgery twice a year). In comparison, Marc his teammate at the time crashed more than 30 times and only once or less did Marc need surgery.
At the end of his career, Dani was mostly affected of the collarbone, but at the start it was mostly extremities (hand and feet).
Tumblr media
This is a phone, but the important isn't the phone itself, it's the Movistar logo on it that can't be seen. This brings us back to Dani's origin. When Dani's family didn't have enough money for Dani to keep going in bikes and then the add of the Movistar Joven Activa Cup appeared in their life. It was a promotional cup with DORNA's approval and the support of Movistar as an sponsor.
It was Antonio who encouraged Dani to send the application despite knowing Dani didn't have the age for it, but it was the only way for Dani to stay riding motobikes and not change to bikes. That was the ladder to took Dani to MotoGP.
When Puig proposed Dani to move from the Cup to CEV, Antonio told Dani to not accept and do a second year in the Cup to win more experience and not suffer from his lack of height and experience, but Dani decided that he wanted to move to the CEV.
They reveal that Dani raced with the number 26 in his first year in the World Championship (2001).
Tumblr media
This is the film 'The last samurai' which allows us to know where the 'little Samurai' nickname comes from.
When the film came out, Dani went to the cinema to see it, and a scene left an impact on him. Added to the message and values that the film had, let him to the samurai path. He also was riding for Honda that they are like that, so it ted nicely.
Tumblr media
This is an orange, and is just there for the colour orange. it's supposed to be the moment to talk about KTM, but Dani also wanted to talk about Repsol. Dani started his career racing with the colour blue (his favourite), but since he moved to MotoGP, the orange has followed him.
Dani talks about how an objective have to be followed by the appropriate tools, and how KTM has been growing since their objective have been growing too.
Tumblr media
Golden wings to represent Honda. Dani has been racing with Honda his whole life including the Movistar Cup and the CEV. For Dani it always has been Honda because all the big names and his idols have been there. There wasn't any other team for him.
Even his leathers in minimotos where the Repsol replica!
Tumblr media
That is a piece of titanium, and Dani's first tough is that the metal is there because he has so much inside him. But no, the meaning of this object is because Sete (Gibernau) used to call Dani Titanium because Dani was small and strong; lightweight and tough/hardy.
The nickname made the aparence for the first time when Dani broke his ankles in 2003. Sete has holding a piece of paper with it.
Tumblr media
'Titanio' Pedrosa mejorate pronto. Estamos contigo - Titanium Pedrosa get well soon. We are with you.
From then on, every time Sete and Dani had an event together, both raced in the Movistar team, Sete called Dani Titanium.
Ernest ventured to ask Dani if his life would have changed had he become MotoGP World Champion. Dani said yes (no hesitation) and explains that some colateral things would have changed, but doesn't further elaborate. When asked of if he still feels as it's missing, Dani said that not at the moment, but he felt it in the past. And that he had to digest and work on accepting it.

He might have been karting since the age of ten, but remarkably Kimi had only raced cars on 23 occasions (three in Formula Ford and 20 in Formula Renault) before he joined the grid for the 2001 Australian Grand Prix. Bearing in mind that in 2000 a Formula Renault car was powered by a 185 bhp engine from a Renault Clio, the step up to a 800bhp+ Sauber F1 car was a big one. However, Kimi took to F1 incredibly quickly, being on the pace of Sauber’s regular drivers on just his second day in testing. There were many who voiced concerns about granting an F1 Super Licence to a driver with so little experience, but Sauber signed him for the 2001 season regardless.
He really is the ‘Iceman’
It was Ron Dennis that gave Kimi the nickname of ‘Iceman’ when he was driving for McLaren but his laid-back approach and ability to remain unfazed by anything F1 could throw at him were never more evident than on the day of his F1 debut in Australia 2001. You might have expected a 21-year-old with so little experience to be anxiously pacing up and down the garage 30 minutes before the start of his first race. Not Kimi though – he was fast asleep in the Sauber motorhome. Having qualified just three tenths of a second slower than his much more experienced team-mate ‘Quick Nick’ Heidfeld, he scored a point with a sixth-place finish in his very first F1 race.
Except when he’s not the Iceman
Speaking recently on the ‘F1: Beyond the Grid’ podcast, Fernando Alonso had this to say about Kimi: “He’s a very good character in Formula 1 and we will miss him… he’s very honest, he’s not playing any games, he’s what you see. A part of this may be a mask that we see from him, of being very cold and not talking too much. There is a different person I think inside… not the Iceman. I think he’s quite warm inside, even if you need to meet him outside of racing, it’s when you see the real Kimi”.
He tells it like it is and always makes us smile
Kimi might not be known as F1’s chattiest driver, but when he does speak, he comes out with some real corkers. In an era when most drivers are terrified of upsetting their bosses and sponsors, Kimi doesn’t seem to care. Here are a few of his most famous quotes:
- On the grid prior to the 2006 Brazilian GP, Kimi was approached by Martin Brundle on live TV. "You missed the presentation by Pele, will you get over it?" asked Brundle. "Yeah. I was having a sh*t," replied Kimi.
- Whilst leading the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2012 Kimi was clearly becoming irritated by the instructions coming over the radio from his Race Engineer. "Just leave me alone, I know what I’m doing," he said. Then later in the race when told to look after his tyres, he replied, "yes, yes, yes, I’m doing that all the time – you don’t have to remind me every 10 seconds…" Apparently, he did know what he was doing because he went on to win the race.
- When asked how he found the new McLaren in testing in January 2004, Kimi didn’t mince his words. "It’s complete sh*t," he replied in Finnish.
- Interviewer: What is the most exciting part of the race?
- Kimi: I think it’s the start, always
- Interviewer: And the most boring?
- Kimi: Now
He’s monumentally smart when it comes to money
His manager will probably want to take some credit here, but despite winning just the one championship, Kimi has become phenomenally wealthy. His net worth has been estimated at between $200-250m. Only Alonso, Hamilton and Schumacher have earned more from the sport and in 2009 he was said to be the second highest paid sportsperson in the world after Tiger Woods.
One of his most impressive deals was the one with Ferrari for the 2010 season. The team had both Massa and Raikkonen under contract but desperately wanted Fernando Alonso in the car. The solution was to offer Kimi a reputed £20m not to drive that year.
Then there was the time that he nearly bankrupted the Lotus team. When Kimi signed his two-year deal with Lotus he was to receive both a salary and a points bonus. The team clearly weren’t confident that they would do particularly well because they apparently agreed to pay €50,000 per point scored. Kimi went on to finish on the podium 13 times and win twice, scoring 390 points over the two years. That would have meant a bonus of €19.5m!
Series 18, episode 7 in March 2012 saw Kimi join Jeremy Clarkson as the ‘star in a reasonably priced car’. He wasn’t particularly quick in the Suzuki Liana but to be fair, it was ‘extremely wet’ that day. Regardless, for a man who has talked about hating giving interviews, he entered into the spirit of things and gave us a lot of laughs.
He’s a proper F1 driver
But the main reason why we love Kimi, is that he’s a proper F1 driver. As the 2007 World Champion, his name will forever feature on a list that includes the likes of Fangio, Clark, Stewart, Senna, Schumacher and Hamilton. Kimi deserves his place amongst the greats - he’s fast, committed and supremely talented, but most of all, he clearly loves F1. With the exception of Schumacher and Alonso, no other driver has still been competing at this level fourteen years after winning their first championship.

Guevara is the 2022 Moto3 World Champion!
Tumblr media
Sealed with a win: the Majorcan wraps up the crown Down Under. Izan Guevara (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team) is the 2022 Moto3™ World Champion! The Majorcan took another stunning victory in the Animoca Brands Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix to wrap up the crown, taking himself more than the requisite 50 points clear with two rounds remaining. Guevara, born in Majorca in 2004, was already riding motorcycles by the age of three. His first international success came in the European Talent Cup in 2019, as the Spaniard took two top tens in his debut races before winning a stunning six races in a row to take the crown as a rookie. That would be his calling card as an achievement the following season, too. Guevara raced in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in 2020 and moved into what was then the Moto3™ Junior World Championship, now known as JuniorGP™. There, it was a similar story to the ETC the year before: a few solid results prefaced a first win, a second place and then a run of four victories in a row – three of which were taken from P22 on the grid at MotorLand Aragon. In Valencia, Guevara completed the stunning feat of taking the crown as a rookie, defeating Xavier Artigas and Pedro Acosta. The Majorcan then moved up to the Moto3™ World Championship for 2021 and hit the ground running. The number 28 made an impression immediately, homing in on the podium at Silverstone and Aragon with fourth places. That first rookie win finally came in a chaotic Americas GP, with the GASGAS Aspar rider having shown serious speed all weekend. 2022, therefore, saw Guevara head into the season as a contender from the off. He started the season one place further back than his Grand Prix debut after starting from the back, but was on the podium in Lombok – his first visit to the rostrum that wasn’t a win. By Jerez he was back on the top step with a true stunner of a victory, going round the outside at the final corner. He wasn’t off the podium again before Silverstone, including wins in Catalunya and Germany, and back-to-back glory came again in Aragon and on his first visit to Mobility Resort Motegi. By Phillip Island, Guevara’s advantage had grown to 49 and the Majorcan had his first match point. He played it in style, escaping in a front group of four and then taking the lead to pull away on the final lap – sealing the crown with his sixth win of the season. Congratulations, Izan!
Tumblr media
#1ZAN IN STATS Aged 18 years 110 days old on race day at the Australian GP, Izan Guevara becomes the fifth youngest rider to clinch a lightweight world title ahead of Valentino Rossi, who was 18 years and 196 days old when he clinched the title in Brno in 1997. Aged 17 years and 97 days old when he took his maiden Moto3™ win at the Americas GP last year, Guevara became the sixth youngest winner in the class behind Maverick Viñales (17 years and 86 days old). This is the first time that a GASGAS rider has won the Moto3™ World Championship, and it's also the first title for a non-Honda or a non-KTM rider in the class. Guevara has won seven times in Moto3™, and he is tied with Brad Binder and Sergio Garcia in ninth place on the list of riders with most wins in Moto3™. Guevara has stood on the podium 11 times so far in 2022, which is more than everyone else in the class. With six wins in 2022 so far, he is also the most successful rider in terms of victories, ahead of Dennis Foggia. Guevara is the seventh Spanish rider to win the Moto3™ title since the introduction of the class back in 2012, and the 16th Spanish rider to clinch the title in the lightweight category (the 23rd in GP racing). Guevara’s title is also the 22nd in the lightweight category for Spain and the 56th in Grand Prix racing. Izan Guevara: "I'm really happy with my career so far. In 2019 I won the ETC, then Moto3 in JuniorGP with Aspar and I won my first year... then I moved to the Moto3 World Championship with the same team. Last year I was able to have a good season, I took a victory in Austin. A good rookie season. Then this year I pushed in every race to get my goal of being World Champion. And today I achieved it. I'm really happy. "In the start of the race today it was really complicated with the slightly wet conditions, but the track dried quickly and I felt really comfortable. It was possible to push in the lead group with my pace, I'm so happy with this moment, this Championship... I'd like to thank my team, my family for the support, and all my friends. "Today I was really focused on the race, in every overtake I didn't take any risk and I'm really happy with it, winning the Championship with the victory is an incredible moment and I'll enjoy it!"

On This Day in F1: March 8th
Present: Saudi Arabia Day 2
History: 1998 Australian Grand Prix
March 8th, 2024 had free practice 3 and qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
The big news of the day was Carlos Sainz having appendicitis and Ollie Bearman filling in for him. Now is this just another outcome of Alex Albon’s famous appendix? Or will we be seeing a new line of dominoes falling into place in the coming months? Only time will tell.
Timing remains essential to the 1998 Australian Grand Prix.
On March 8th, 1998, Albert Park (then called the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit) hosted the 1998 season opener. The race was dominated by the McLaren-Mercedes team with its two drivers taking home a 1-2 finish.
While it was no surprise that a McLaren driver took the chequered flag first, there was controversy surrounding it.
For the first half of the Grand Prix, Mika Hakkinen was leading the race. However, on lap 36, he lost the lead due to coming into the pits after a misheard call. This led to Hakkinen's teammate, David Coulthard, leading the race.
Coulthard had a 12-second lead that was reduced to 2 seconds by lap 55. On the front straight during lap 56, Coulthard let Hakkinen pass him. This move and the pre-season agreement between drivers - whoever led the first corner would win the race - drew great controversy and race-fixing allegations.
McLaren Team Boss, Ron Dennis, spoke on the controversy and claimed that someone else had tapped into their team radios which led to Hakkinen losing the lead and coming into the pits.
"We do not and have not manipulated Grands Prix unless there were some exceptional circumstances, which occurred in Australia [1998] when someone had tapped into our radio and instructed Mika Häkkinen to enter the pits."
Eventually, they would go in front of the World Motorsport Council where the verdict was "any future act prejudicial to the interests of competition should be severely punished in accordance with article 151c of the International Sporting Code." Team orders remained controversial in Formula One and were banned following the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix. It wasn't until after the 2010 German Grand Prix that they were allowed again.
In 2023, Hakkinen spoke about the 1998 Australian GP and the agreement that he had with Coulthard:
"The team said something on the radio, I was confused, I thought they asked me to come to change tyres and that was not the case. They were just giving me some different information. So I just drove through the pit lane and I of course lost the lead of the race, David got the lead."
"We were sitting on the front row, me and David – and we just made a deal. The driver who was first at the first corner when the race starts, that driver is going to win the Grand Prix. There's not going to be any fight. We had a deal, so David had to let me past – brilliant!"
