Cinco de Mayo
Tumblr media
Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "Fifth of May") is a yearly celebration held on May 05, which commemorates the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. It is observed by Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and people of non-Mexican heritage. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with parades, food, music, folkloric dancing, and battle reenactments.

More popular in the United States than Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. Celebrations began in California, where they have been observed annually since 1863. The day gained nationwide popularity beyond those of Mexican-American heritage in the 1980s due to advertising campaigns by beer, wine, and tequila companies; today, Cinco de Mayo generates beer sales on par with the Super Bowl. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades or battle reenactments. The city of Puebla marks the event with various festivals and reenactments of the battle.

Many people outside Mexico mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence, which was declared more than 50 years before the Battle of Puebla.

Earth Day [April 22]
Tumblr media
[The unofficial Earth flag created by John McConnell includes The Blue Marble photograph taken by the crew of Apollo 17.]
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first held on April 22, 1970, and it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org (formerly Earth Day Network), including over 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The official theme for this year (2023) is Invest In Our Planet.
In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honour the Earth and the concept of peace. It was at first to be observed on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature's equipoise was later sanctioned in a proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U. Thant at the United Nations. A month later, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed the idea to hold a nationwide environmental teach-in on April 22, 1970. He hired Denis Hayes, a young activist, to be the National Coordinator. Nelson and Hayes renamed the event "Earth Day".
The first Earth Day was focused on the United States. In 1990, Denis Hayes took it international and organised events in 141 nations. On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, China and 120 other countries. On Earth Day 2020, over 100 million people around the world observed the 50th anniversary in what is being referred to as the largest online mass mobilisation in history.
Here are some ways to celebrate Earth Day:
Plant a tree or even your own fruits and veggies.
Look for ways to ♻ reduce, reuse and recycle throughout your home.
Conserve energy by turning off lights and electronics when not in use.
Reduce paper waste and junk mail.
Give your vehicle a break - walk, ride a bike, carpool or take public transportation.
Turn off the tap when it's not needed.
Buy a reusable water bottle.
Use reusable bags at the store.
Replace your bulbs with CFL and LED bulbs.
Volunteer to get involved in cleaning up parks, restoring habitats, and other efforts to make your community greener.
Just spend some time outdoors.
