mounts and pets can now pollute zones by leaving fumes or waste everywhere. if you don't stop and clean up, you get charged in crowns. cleanup involves a reskinned mini game of whirlyburly. if you lose, the mess gets bigger, and you will get charged more crowns.

Hello, folks. Here is my latest article regarding some philosophical questions that can be raised in the lore of Pirate101 (and its sister game Wizard101) and its galaxy of the Spiral. These are just random philosophical questions inspired by the poster Star Gator on the official W101 message boards.
Enjoy!

Ao3 tag game!
THANKS @ragecndybars FOR THE TAG I APPRECIATE IT
*cracks knuckles* lets do this
How many works do you have on AO3?
24 works! I would have never expected to have that many 5 years ago, hahaha
What's your total AO3 word count?
186,291! oh wow, almost 200k!! (unsurprisingly PT minato takes up over a third of that LMAO)
How many fandoms have you written for, and what are they?
10 fandoms! I'm counting Persona 3, 4, and 5 and separate, but I'm grouping all the Zelda fandoms together since it's all Linked Universe fic.
Here's the breakdown!
The Legend of Zelda & Related Fandoms (6)
Persona 5 (5)
Persona 3 (5)
SPY x FAMILY (Anime) (3)
Wizard101 (Video Game) (3)
SPY x FAMILY (Manga) (3)
Runescape (Video Games) (3)
Pirate101 (Video Game) (3)
Persona 4 (2)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom (2)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood & Manga (1)
Star Wars - All Media Types (1)
The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors (1)
Top five fics by kudos:
The Ghost of Mementos/Stygian Ringlet (Persona3/5) - to the surprise of absolutely no one, since this is currently my longest fic. I'm very happy with Stygian Ringlet being the top because I love my boys :)
True Crime Special on the Midnight Channel (Persona 4/5) - my Ren has a TV Dungeon fic! also very proud of the dungeon concept for this one, I really need to finish the last two chapters
Dark Clouds on the Horizon (Linked Universe/TOTK) - I feel like this one got a lot of momentum partially because it was directly in the wake of TOTK's release, but I'm happy with how it turned out :)
Strangers Are Just Friends You Haven't Met (Persona 3/SPY x FAMILY) - this was a collab series with mewrose and a few others in the marigolds discord! we were throwing ideas at the wall to see what stuck and I really had a lot of fun with Shinjiro-related prompts, because I LOVE him and hitting him with the isekai baseball bat into a universe with Anya brings me great joy
Salt Tears and Raindrops (Linked Universe/TOTK) - directly related to Dark Clouds, and I'm glad people enjoyed good ol' fashioned angst >:) (I do need to post more of my wips, I do have a couple more roleswap AU wips that I want to post)
Do you respond to comments?
Yes! I almost always do because I really appreciate them and its my way of saying thanks for the comment! If I don't comment it's because I lost track of it or because I can't think of a response.
What's the fic with the angstiest ending you've ever written?
Probably Salt Tears and Raindrops. I was in a Mood and decided to go for the tried-and-true method of putting fictional characters I like through the emotional wringer. That's how I got the rough draft for this fic :)
Do you write crossovers?
*looks at my persona fics and recent LU fics*
...I think it's safe to say most of my fics these days fall under crossovers lmao
Have you ever gotten hate on a fic?
I wouldn't say I have? One or two comments that came off as rude, but no actual hate, thankfully. If I did, I forgot about it. I've been blessed by wonderfully nice readers <3
Do you write smut?
Nope. I don't read it, so I wouldn't know how to write it anyway.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of? I sure hope not.
I have seen a couple short fics slightly imitate Ghost of Mementos though, which I thought was really sweet that they liked it enough to inspire their own writing.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope, but I'd definitely be open to it!
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
RYOMINA. Hands down. I love them so much, I am so mentally unwell about these two
What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but don’t think you ever will?
My two Runescape fics, Whispers in the Temple and Welcome to the Jungle. I absolutely loved going hogwild with rewriting old quests in Runescape, but I psyched myself out of Welcome to the Jungle because I got overly anxious about accidentally doing bad representation.
(in hindsight, it probably wouldn't have been as big a deal as I thought; it's hard to make it worse considering how bad Legend's Quest was with the british-african stereotypes. that quest DID NOT age well.)
I also want to finish Snake in the Grass; that was my first attempt at a genuine mystery plot and I really liked playing with Warriors in that fic in the context of the gang trying to figure out who the heck is trying to murder him.
What are your writing strengths?
I feel like I'm pretty good at dialogue! I try to make sure it matches the character's speech patterns and personality. Really well-written dialogue can tell you who's speaking without actually telling who it is. (For example, the way I write them: Minato speaks as few words as possible and has very little filter with his observations when he does share them, and Shinjiro is pretty rough around the edges, with shortened words and the occasional swear. Warriors is good with words and wit, but he has a certain military-esque directness and doesn't dance around the topic.)
I do try hard to keep the plot clear and understandable over everything else, so probably that as well.
Also, now that I think about it, maybe fight sequences? I don't do them much, but I do enjoy the challenge of making a clear sequence of what happens in a fight and trying to make it understandable. Fight sequences are easy to skip or gloss over, but I think of them like their own miniature plot. What happens? What surprises are there? What are their movesets? How do they get the upper hand? (and of course, what looks cool as fuck)
What are your writing weaknesses?
Time management. I tend to over-proofread since I beta my own work, and often I'll go back to tweak stuff if I had additional thoughts to add to it, or extra insight. Lately, it takes longer to write chapters than I'd like.
Also, dialogue-heavy scenes often get very chaotic in my WIPs because of the way I rough out fics. I'll throw together a bunch of dialogue bits I think would be cool to include, and sometimes they'll clash or get really messy, especially if there's lots of characters (looking at the latest two chapters of Stygian Ringlet)
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fics?
I think it's cool! It adds flavor to fics. If it's more than one short phrase though, or if it's story important, then I do prefer that there is a translation in the author's notes. I haven't done any non-English dialogue in fics, save for one memorable adventure into trying to figure out how Latin grammar structure works for a character that didn't speak English.
What was the first fandom you ever wrote for?
Wizard101 and Pirate101. I was obsessed with those two for YEARS. I really, really liked pirate stories in high school, and having a cast of crewmates that accompany you throughout the game really inspired me to write my first fic featuring my OC. (I was also into One Piece at the time, but I never wrote for it.)
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written so far?
Stygian Ringlet. It's really dear to my heart. I have poured so much love and effort into that fic, and the reception on it has completely blown me away.
THANKS FOR THE TAG!! Uhhhmmm for tags I'm going to go with @skyward-floored, @catreginae and @breannasfluff (but only if you want to!! no obligation of course)
and of course any other writers that want to do it as well!! go forth

Bad wizard101 idea:
You only know when your spell fizzled after you cast it and the animation plays.
Example: You cast Scarecrow, scarecrow animation plays, it crits, it takes all the blades you have, it takes all the traps the enemy has, right as the animation for when it actually does damage plays, it'll break apart into dust and say fizzle

This turned into a big autism info dump so have at it kids:
There’s obviously a couple like. ‘Wizarding school’ franchises out there, big and small, but I think what makes Wizard101 stand out compared to so many others in the “genre” is that it is set exclusively it’s own universe. Something I personally never liked about the world of say, Harry Patta, was it’s connection to a distinctly “human” or non-magic realm.
While our wizard is stated to be from earth in much later established lore (something i personally am not a fan of but that’s just a me thing i think), I really liked that, when the game was first established, that yea, it was hinted that you were from “a world that does not even believe in magic”, but NEVER clearly stated.
I liked the IDEA that the Wizard COULD be from Earth. Maybe they’re not. It was always up for the player’s interpretation, and i do think having it be canon now a days makes the Spiral’s lore feel a bit more stiff.
I like when The Spiral let certain things be ambiguous or unexplained- I think that’s part of the charm. Not that complex magic systems are bad (heck one of the reasons i also love the game so much is it’s unique magic system), but when you start establishing things more concretely, you inherently make it les flexible, and in some cases less imaginative in certain ways.
I always found myself being able to imagine things with Wizard101′s lore. There was always an interesting IDEA, and it was up to the player to draw their own conclusions. I think generally this is still held up pretty well in the current lore’s establishment, but yea that 2008-2014 time stamp for lore hit a nice sweet spot of being specific enough to establish it’s own ideas, yet still let the player build their own relationship with what was given to them.
Anyway this is to say that I think a LOT of this has to do with the absence of earth/a non-magic realm- because frankly, I am never interested in the non magic realm in these genre’s. I always would much rather see how our protagonists explores the magic world, the other world.
In Wizard101′s case especially, It makes for a more interesting plot point in terms of the hero’s journey- in the fact that we can never actually complete that journey. There is never a “return” for us to go back to our “home” because the spiral, at this point, has become our home.
I also think the absence of “backstory” for the wizard, or rather, the incredible vagueness of it, is that it lets ANYONE relate to this character. They are nameless outside of their literal function as The Wizard, The Savior. The player, the one who literally DRIVES the wizard, creates their own ideas. We literally create alongside what others have created for us, and if that’s not so beautiful and so personal and so MAGICAL i don’t know what is.
I also think that’s why the game is so successful as a GAME- you can’t quite create alongside a book or a movie- yea you can make fan art, fanfiction, but a game you are actively part of, like you literally play a hand in experiencing the story by having to complete actions to carry you through to the next stages.
Anywho. Wizard101 is, in my opinion, one of the best and most interesting “wizarding school” pieces of media out there and you can quote me on that.

Writeblr Reintroduction!
So hey, it’s been a minute. (Read: several months)
A bit of a reintroduction is in order as I get back into this space that I miss very dearly.
Me: So I’m Larkspur, you might have known me as Jenna, or Dove, or tiredbard, or the Magician, any of those things really. But I changed my name a couple years ago, it’s Larkspur, hi! I like that one much better. I might change my url again at some point but that is still up in the air, I really like bardicbeetle. My pronouns are they/them/theirs (and I’m kicking around zie/hirs somewhere in my brain but we don’t have time for me to unpack that rn I’ve got too much else to deal with).
I’m in my mid-twenties, I write primarily character driven fiction, a lot of it focuses on the ideas of finding a home you truly belong in. My primary project (Safe in the Dark) has been in the works for well over a decade, and still involves vampires though kind of in a tangential plot device way and the focus is more on overcoming trauma and learning to love life again and how not everything monstrous is really the monster. My newer WIP, which still doesn’t really have a name but we’ll call it “That Witch Lives and Breathes” for now, is about an exiled hero becoming the village witch on a new planet and how you move on when the people you saved vilify you for it.
I post snippets of my work when I have them, reblog shitposts about writing, and sometimes very rarely make moodboards.
I also write fanfiction, specifically for Doctor Who, the Lost Boys, Kingdom Hearts, and most recently—2008 hit children’s mmorpg Wizard101. All of that can be found on my AO3 account under the username “oldestenemy” which is also the name of my fandom blog on here. I’ll probably reblog my wizard101 fic posts here, but keep posting them on my fandom blog, that just feels like it makes the most sense.
WIP introductions coming soon, and I’ll link them in this post when they’re up!
Safe in the Dark (contemporary fantasy/vampires) - Tag - Intro Post - bad CS presentation
That Witch Lives and Breathes (Sci-fi/Fantasy/a lil’ bit of horror) - Tag - Intro Post - bad CS presentation
Anyway, thanks for sticking around if I’ve known you a while, thanks for stopping by if you’re new. If you wanna catch up, introduce me to your new projects and characters feel free to send me an ask, or a dm, or tag me in a post. I have a lot of new snips to share once I get things on here in order. I love this community and I’m excited to be back in it.

Hey! Just wanted to say I’ve recently read your ‘Forever Onward, Scion,’ series, and absolutely loved it.
I’ve been playing Wizard101 since I was ten years old, and your series perfectly encapsulates the reason I still find myself pulled toward the game, despite the repetitive combat. My aching love for the young wizard, the complicated characters that are the Drake brothers and Morganthe, the way the game’s atmosphere shifts as the wizard travels through more and more worlds of the spiral; your series has it all.
I’m a dedicated Death wizard (both because my terrible gaming skills depend on life-steal to survive, and) because I love the complexity of the wizard’s relationship with ghosts and spirits throughout the game, the lore that I made for the death spells that have you harm yourself for heals/buffs, and the added conflict of being a representative of a magic practically rejected and by Ambrose himself. But your series gives me a whole new view on Myth students and their beauty, and makes me cherish Professor Cyrus Drake even more than I already do.
I’ve bookmarked your series, and am going to be rereading it in the very near future. I genuinely felt so emotional, so glad that someone understood the young wizard in the way that you do, that I cannot wait to experience it again. Feel no pressure to work on updates or responses! I just wanted to let you know that your series means the world to me, and I hope you’re aware of just how amazing and beautiful your writing is to us readers :,)
Hey anon, I adore you, I am having a hell of a time right now and you just made my night, my weekend, and possibly my whole gods damned august.
I'm so so glad you love the scion series and that it has resonated with you so much. Wiz has been my comfort game for a very long time, I started it when I was eleven and while there have been patches here and there where I haven't played (hello three solid years I was in celestia) it's always something I come back to. Diving into it again once I was an adult (both before and after the FTUE update so I got a refresher on the original starter quests) really made me appreciate the things the young wizard is thrown into with little guidance or help.
I have such a deep fondness for the arc 1 story, for the Drake family and their struggles, for the way (As a myth wizard by virtue of Assigned Myth At Quiz Book when I was 11, hated that my professor was mean, made a life wizard, felt bad before level 5, went back to myth determined to stick it out and never stopped) that Cyrus has to walk with you the whole way through, watch you get stronger and wonder will it be enough, do i want it to be enough? Because inevitably you're going to kill Malistaire, no matter how hard he tries to end things peacefully, that will always be the outcome. (I have some mild HC-lore surrounding myth wizards as mildly clairvoyant, addressed in fic using the celestial calendar spell, but I always felt like Cyrus especially knew he couldn't stop things, no matter how much he wanted to). Cyrus Drake is so so so important to me, his trying to dissuade you in the beginning, to get you expelled, to get you out of this place where you will inevitably become a murderer by virtue of having no other choice. Having by the end, him thanking you for everything you have done for him, for the peace you've brought his brother, his sister in law, himself. His speech in the graduation quest kills me, as does the one at the end of Darkmoor.
And arc 2, while a little disjointed for me by virtue of having started it at... uh, age 18 or so, and not finishing it until literally this spring (and now I'm 26, so, it's been a minute!) hit so hard and so satisfyingly at the end that it just spurred all my ideas even further. The way Morganthe is such a product of her surroundings and the way nobody seemed to actually pay her the care she needed in order to flourish, the way that turned deadly so fast. While I know young morganthe's memories were tainted by her own emotions I cannot help but resent Ambrose all the more for them. His presence in arc 2 is that of someone sending a child off to fight a war with nothing more than a force ghost council of advice and a prophecy that might not even be true. The things the Wizard is forced to do especially once we get to Khrysalis just drive home how deeply they have been affected by what they've been through over the years. Enemies in Khrysalis start to question why you don't just ask for information, why you hit so hard, why you fight tooth and nail before speaking to them, it's because it's all they've been taught how to do. The wizard, as young as they are, is not a peacemaker, is not a diplomat, they are a soldier and a war machine for Ambrose's, and by further extension Raven's ends by this point. It hurts, and while I love a silent protagonist, I want to voice that pain.
I love love love Death YW lore as well, and yes especially as a school so prejudiced against and so pushed back on by Ambrose, not only for his own failings with Morganthe, but for his failure to the students of the Death school after Malistaire's departure. I love the wizard as someone who (in the case of a death student) has to walk this line of realizing they are the next prodigy on the universal chopping block, the next great necromancer half expected to fall off into the pit that is darkness and evil and shadow. I love them rioting against that notion, and of pushing back against Death itself being seen as a cursed school, a dark school, it is essential, just as any of the others.
All this to say, I'm so glad the series has made you feel things, and I'm glad you want to go back and experience them again <3
I'm working my way through the darkmoor chapters in between writing horribly out of order (I got a little too excited once I hit arc 3 proper and now I'm all the way in Empyrea because I haven't stopped to breathe)
Thank you, genuinely this makes me so beyond happy.
-- Stevie/The Wizard Nightshade
