Anyone else still sobbing over Kiko shoving Baymax and Sofia into the vent, closing it, and throwing herself on top of it to try and shield them when the building was going to be demo'd? No? Just me? Ok then

I find it funny how Baymax! ends with an exclamation point but yet the thing that everyone keeps talking about is the period.
...I’ll see myself out...

My Thoughts on “Baymax!”
Tumblr media
Today is the day! The new Disney+ series “Baymax!” is now available to be viewed! And boy oh boy, what a series!
If you are a fan of Baymax and Big Hero 6 in general, I highly recommend watching this series. The episodes are short, but sweet!
Now, for my thoughts on each episode. Spoilers under the cut!
1. Cass:
Nice to see Cass again! And it was really fun seeing Baymax try to handle the Lucky Cat Café!
2. Kiko:
Baymax trying to make Kiko overcome her fear of water was very funny! I also the emotional moment when Kiko talked about her husband.
3. Sofia:
This episode shows Sofia dealing with her first period and Baymax having to help her, which was really nice! I also liked seeing that man in the trans flag shirt for a brief moment!
4. Mbita:
I really liked that car chase with Baymax and Mbita. I was also surprised when Mbita asked Yukio out on a date. I love more LGBTQ+ representation!
5. Yachi:
The various music and sounds coming out of the earbud in Yachi was funny and… wait… THIS IS A TWO-PARTER?!
6. Baymax:
Now THIS is how you conclude a series! Everyone coming together to help out Baymax! And I loved the callback to Big Hero 6 at the very end.
Overall, even though none of the other 4 members of the team weren't in it, this was a really good series! I also loved that we got to discover more of San Fransokyo while also visiting familiar places! I definitely need to re-watch it!

So I saw Baymax this morning and I would like to praise the episode "Sofia".
Not only did it discuss periods (which is still considered taboo even though its biology), but it also touched upon:
Trans people using menstrual products, which is important in terms of representation and debunking the idea that only women menstruate
Fathers buying menstrual products for their daughters
The different types of menstrual products
The cultural implications of periods, which is that it changes the person and that it is nothing to be ashamed of (spoiler: you are still the same person regardless of menstruation)
Overall, good job to the creators and thank you.

Oh God damnit, I'm now thinking about Amber and Karmi having a rivalry (not towards Hiro though, just the Big Hero 6 team) and through fanfic writing about BH6. Now Amber would think that self shipping with Irl people is terrible and stalker type and thinks she's way better than that, so she decided to make some of romance parts between Cedric and Obake despite Sofia's protest. Amber has also come up with new names for the team:
Tall Girl -> Miss Chemicals
Speed Queen -> Quick Demon
Chop Chop -> The Cleaver
Flamejump -> The Blue Flamethrower
The Red Knight -> The Red Knight
Captain Cutie -> Commander Helpful.
Even one of her fics writing was so good that the Theater Program of SFIA wanted her to direct their play of her Fanfic.

Baymax! Episode 3
Sofia. I've thought about how I want to approach this episode because I think the subject matter should be touched along with Turning Red but it's still a sensitive topic among many so I'll refer to it as TR. If you want more context, check out the episode.
But this one takes place in Shiro Yoshida Middle School as I showed from the trailer.
Tumblr media
Stitch sticker on that girl's chair. But I ask, where does Baymax get his money? He goes to the store to buy TR and comes out with bags and bags full. But the idea is that Sofia doesn't want to leave the bathroom now, not even for the talent show where she can show off her yo-yo skills. She doesn't want to be treated any differently because of it. I just hope that Baymax sanitized the bathroom before all this because I know my school bathrooms were dirty.
After the credits, Hiro is working on programming some code while Baymax plays with a yo-yo when he's not looking, similar to Groot dancing when Drax isn't looking. The code might actually be a tease of something to come soon.

you guys mentioned crying in the sofia and baymax episodes? i was crying during the kiko episode when it addressed her dead husband 😭 like the grief mentions again??? dealing with therapy and grief was baymax's first job for hiro. and i just think tadashi would be so proud since he designed him to be comforting. also you can't convince me that tadashi has never helped that lady before he died, i mean she literally lives across from the hamadas

Sofia: I'm not done being a kid yet!
Me: *outloud* You're 12.
Baymax: *immediately after* You are twelve years old-
Me: Right? Exactly!

To literally no one’s suprise, the 6th short is my fave.
To be fair, it’s not just because of Hiro. I love how it’s all 5 previous shorts coming together, making it form into one complete whole coming full circle, instead of it just being stand alone stories.
I watched it in English, so I could be sure what the intented dialog for each scene was (since sometimes dub translations are weird...), but I plan to watch it in Dutch later, because I mean... I’m definitely gonna rewatch these shorts plently of times.
And MASSIVE kudos to the Sofia and Mbita shorts for having LGBTQ+ representation (a part of me wonders if it was released during pride month for this reason). That trans guy talking about what pads he uses and Mbita asking a guy on a date felt so natural, I was so happily suprised.
This also has one of the best representations of periods I’ve ever seen in media aimed at kids. and I really appreciate they pointed out getting your period isn’t equel to becoming a woman, Sofia’s still a kid (or a “tween” as Baymax put it).
And to think this is coming from Walt Disney Animation Studios, aka their main studio. This is huge.
Obviously I would’ve loved these shorts even more if Hiro was more involved (am I biased? yes, do I care I’m biased? no), but I’m just happy we got those short post-credit scenes and him actually being involved in the last one.
And luckily plently of new Hiro footage to gif!

Episode 3 of Baymax is SO important for all of the reasons that people a lot smarter and more articulate than me have been saying, but i also want to mention it’s absolutely hilarious and I want to consensually kiss on the mouth whoever came up with the concept of Baymax in the menstrual health aisle. The double meaning period joke was corny but did in fact have me laugh out loud. Hats off to all who worked on ‘Sofia’

something i haven't seen mentioned about the Baymax + Sofia episode (and the final episode about finding Baymax) is the way they depict Sofia's ability to talk about her period!! When her best friend Ali, who I believe identifies as a guy, comes to check on her in the bathroom, instead of her blushing and freaking out and being like "it's girl stuff you wouldn't understand!!" - which is an incorrect and very Disney channel response - she's like "dude I have my PERIOD I am IN PAIN and there is stuff COMING OUT OF ME" and he is like "whoa dude I'm sorry but also cool!! I remember when my sister got hers!!" And then she brings her period up to Hiro later when she meets him!! And it's like yeah this is how friendships should be and how periods should be talked about and treated in our day to day lives without shame or embarrassment
