Thinking about how we didn't get one scene of Mike in his basement in s4, though we got almost everyone else in the party down there (Lucas, Max, Dustin, Steve, Robin, Nancy).
At the start of s4, we got Mike in his room and in the kitchen getting pop-tarts out of the pantry (near the phone on the main floor), but nothing of him in his 'sanctuary'.
Considering Mike and Will and that damn basement metaphor, it makes me wonder if that was entirely intentional.
Because although there is a phone in the kitchen, I highly doubt that's where Mike made all his calls to Will since the Byers moved, most of which went unanswered. That's very likely the kind of thing he would do in the basement...
Makes you think they're saving Mike in his basement again for the last season, bc what we'll see is something that'll definitely shock the average viewer... something the Duffers had to wait until the end to reveal.

Interesting how most of Milkvan’s crucial moments are always in public/in a group and depicted as comical, vs Byler’s crucial moments being intimate and private.
Milkvan first kiss in s1: in the large school cafeteria, defeating the feeling of privacy, plus just after El genuinely and cluelessly asked Mike if they were gonna be like siblings
Milkvan kiss in s2: in a crowded room at the Snowball
Milkvan breakup in s3: in bright daylight & public, in front of the mall and the entire party, framed as a girlboss moment with El and Max giving each other a high five and Mike looking rather disgusted
Milkvan “makeup” in s3: in the hospital waiting room, Lucas distracting Max so they can talk and Mike sending Will away from the seats. Basically the whole party is in the same room and almost everyone is aware that they’re making up.
Milkvan “blank makes you crazy” in s3: again, in a public space (the store). They may be alone in the aisle, but like the s1 kiss it also defeats the feeling of privacy. And again, like the s1 kiss, it’s placed in a comical light due to El’s cluelessness of what Mike is trying to say.
“I love her and can’t lose her again” in s3: Homeboy basically publicly announced it to everyone except El herself.
“I love you too” in s3: This is one of the few “intimate” Milkvan moments in this season and Mike looks uncomfortable throughout all of it. He stalls & pretends to have forgotten what he said previously, not to mention his eyes are open when she kisses him and he looks infinitely confused afterwards.
Skipping over all of s4’s moments of the first few episodes because they were just fighting or putting up an act-
Milkvan reunion in ep8: The framing of the scene made us focus on Will’s silhouette standing between them more than anything. Also Willel’s reunion was 10x more emotional from both sides.
Mike’s monologue in ep9: Nine “I love you”s in front of three other people in a speech that was cliché and barely made sense, not to mention he wouldn’t have made it if Will hadn’t pushed him to.
(I guess the scene in the Surfer Boy’s Pizza was kinda sweet, but we will never know what either of them were actually gonna say because they got interrupted by Argyle. We can theorize El wanted to amicably break up with him based on her body language but nothing is definite. I’m also not adressing all of Mike’s moments of calling up El in s2 bc that can also pass as a guilt reaction rather than romance, but the post would be too long if I start to elaborate.)
Then there’s Byler.
It was a Seven? Will waited til the others were gone. Crazy Together? Privately in Mike’s basement. Superspy hand hold? Alone in Will’s room. “It was the best thing I’ve ever done”? Perhaps they weren’t alone, but the scene was framed as if they were. Emotional, intimate, Mike was crying, speaking softly without hesitation. The rain fight, aka the Byler equivalent of the Milkvan breakup shortly before? Lucas stays downstairs, they’re alone, the scene with its light and dialogue is framed like a truly heartbreaking moment.
And s4? Heart to heart 1 (“it’s going to be up to us again”)? Alone in Jonathan’s room until they get interrupted. Heart to heart 2 (“Cool.” “Cool.”)? Alone in Will’s room.
Arguably their other two moments on top of the car and in the Van are not the two of them alone (Argyle and Jonathan are in the vicinity and in the latter Jonathan is even full on listening) but still they are framed more intimate than any of Milkvan’s moments.
And then the final scene of s4. One of the last few dialogues of the show. They sit down together as soon as they’re alone, to have another heart to heart.
My point:
Milkvan’s most “important” romantic moments can always pass as conformity and nothing else. As Mike trying to prove to everyone including himself that he likes girls (Or El, depending on the hc). With grand gestures- or rather, grand words that are never an issue with any other healthy couple on the show. As both of them being in a relationship for the sake of it, and not genuine romance.
I think it is very funny when Milkvans’ biggest argument for the ship is that it’s “been set up since season 1” but like. If my ship had been set up like that, being portrayed as a joke most of the time, I’d honestly be so offended.

am i the only one that doesn’t have hope anymore? like at all? i don’t trust the duffers anymore and i feel like us(the bylers) created all this byler thing in our heads and we just looked too much into the details in the show :(
i dont blame you for not having hope bc volume 2 for byler definitely was a disappointment and i understand not wanting to look between the lines of the monologue and get hopes up only to be disappointed again but DO NOT think we just made all this up!! if byler doesnt happen i genuinely think that it was their plan originally and then they trashed it.
its not like theres two or three potential hints towards it. there are dozens and dozens of clues and subtext from the dialogue and actions of the characters but also the cinematography, the lighting, the score and tracks they use, the parallels to other couples on the show, the placement of their characters, and probably so much more we havent even noticed yet. we did not make anything up.
after volume 2 i wasnt that sad or mad because more than anything i was just VERY confused. because none of mike wheelers actions make sense unless hes deeply struggling with internalized homophobia. there will be genuine plotholes in the whole show if they stick with mlvn til the end.
lets look at mikes actions alone. can you answer ANY of these questions with an answer thats NOT related to his sexuality?
why did mike not let el touch her when they were kissing at the beginning of s3?
why did he say “its not my fault you dont like girls” if thats not projecting?
why did he say he loves her out loud to everyone else but then pretend he didnt know what she was talking about when she brought it up again?
why did he look so confused when el kissed him and said she loves him and why did he keep his eyes open and didnt kiss her back at all?
why didnt mike have any indication of even having a gf in his room besides the letter we saw him read, while el had a whole shrine and a “book of letters” from him? why did, instead, mike have wills drawings up all over the basement and has a while binder for them that we saw in s1. book of drawings.
WHY on earth wouldnt mike hug his best friend who he hasnt seen in months at the airport? its not because he knows wills feelings, the duffers and finn and the script itself have confirmed hes oblivious to his sexuality and feelings for him.
why did mike look so nervous to ask will about the painting? if it was just because their friendship was kinda dying i think he would have said it as if he was bored or didnt care but instead he looked like he cared a little too much and was trying to hide it. this is right after reading el’s letter that said that will might be painting for a girl.
why did mike barely even look at el as they were walking out of the airport and why did he wear something very different for mike as if he’s portraying someone he’s not?
why would mike emphasize so much “WE’RE FRIENDS!!! we’re friends!” will didnt mean it in a romantic context but mike took it that way.
why was mike kinda an asshole to el and didnt comfort her after the bullies at the rink? “she didnt look fine?” what the hell.
WHY COULDNT MIKE SAY OR WRITE THAT HE LOVES EL!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT SCENE IF HE ACTUALLY GENUINELY DOES LOVE HER??? why didnt he say it right then if he did?
why was that “i feel like i lost you” scene so god damn flirty? he’s never looked at el the way he looked at him here.
why did he nod when will told him that its scary to open up to people especially if they dont like the truth? why did finn say that this “psyches him out”?
why did mike say “its not fate, its not destiny, its just simple dumb luck” about first meeting el and then claim to her that the moment he say her in the woods was love at first sight? we know that this is a blatant lie and will should know this too.
why did mike look at will like THAT during the painting scene!!!??? (i will admit tho this could be finn wolfhard just wanting his character to be gay so he plays him gay but they could have used shots of him not looking at his lips but they kept them in.)
WHY DID WILL HAVE TO PUSH MIKE TO CONTINUE TALKING TO EL!!!!!???? HE WASNT GONNA SAY HE LOVES HER BUT WILL PUSHED HIM INTO IT!!!!!!!!
and thats just his actions alone!!! now lets look into the more technical film choices theyve made when it comes to mike wheeler. again, can you answer any of these questions with an answer thats not related to him having internalized homophobia?
why did they make it clear that max and lucas at day of the dead were having a date (“im spending romantic time with my girlfriend”) and then choose to place mike and will together but not with them, as if mike and will were on a date too.
why did they film mike and el’s break up in s3 so playfully and humorous with bright lighting, lots of colors, an audience, max and el laughing, and fun music after vs mike and will’s fight which was very dark and blue, pouring rain, harsh shadows, and played an emotional original score track?
WHY the eye witness parallel?
why would they frame mike in a closet in s3 during that awkward unreciprocated kiss? this is the biggest thing by far for me that makes me think he’s gay for sure.
why did they frame mike reading el’s letter so that theres a literal fucking one way sign pointing to an open closet?
why did bouncy upbeat music play when he and el reunited at the airport? they could have made it emotional but they made it light and playful as if its more friendly than romantic.
WHY DID THEY PLAY A TRACK CALLED “IN THE CLOSET” WHEN MIKE STARTS SPEAKING!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT WILL!!! this is also right after he said “we’re firends we’re friends!!” no its not just because el is in a literal closet here, the track starts during mike and wills fight.
why did they play a track that is EXTREMELY similar to the track eulogy during mike and el’s fight, a track thats only played when someone dies.
(emotional, tender music). why. its only used in romantic contexts. we see it used with byler, lumax, jopper, and once with mlvn when theyre at the pizza place.
why did they frame will out of focus in the middle of mike and el when they reunited!!? at first i thought this was just to emphasize will’s pov but now im thinking it might be more symbolic of will getting in between mike and eleven. he himself isnt doing that at all though, quite the opposite actually- he keeps giving mike relationship advice and hes the reason mike told el he loves her, so it must be in reference to how will is disrupting mike and els relationship because of mikes feelings for him.
why did they keep will in the frame when mike said he loved her? the only other time we had a similar one on one emotional monologue delivery to someone was in s2 when joyce, jonathan, and mike were trying to reach will and mike told him asking him to be friends was the best thing hes ever done. that was shot as if there were no one else in the room it was very centered around just will and mike, whereas this monologue shows will in the same frame as mike as well as will and jonathans reactions to what hes saying.
and lastly, WHY did they frame every couple so dramatically paired off together in the final shot while el was all alone. joyce and hopper, mike and will, and jonanathan and nancy. theyve done this in the past but this was the first time they made it excruciatingly obvious.
damn i wasnt gonna list out every thing i know when i first started answering this but thats what i ended up doing. anyways, again, i understand giving up considering how disappointing volume 2 was, but absolutely no way was it all in our heads. look at all that.
i still have hope just for the sheer fact that not only mike wheeler as a character, but all their film choices surrounding mike wheeler make no fucking sense unless hes gay and DEEP in the closet.

pretty please... if you could so kindly write using that prompt u reblogged about levi and hange sharing his horse on their ride back to let her rest bc of the blood loss and injuries 🥺 whenever u feel like it! sorry, i'm a sucker for whump and hurt/comfort ficlets aaaa 😭
The sun was already rising, the danger growing in size along with the red circle on the horizon. The Titans might appear soon, and they were still a significant distance from safety of the Walls. If they did not want to engage in battle, they needed to spur their horses, or take refuge elsewhere.
They rode out of Shiganshina too late, the stars were already out when they finished their inspection of Yeager's basement. Perhaps, it was unwise to travel after sunset, knowing they wouldn't make it home in time. But no one wished to stay another second in Shiganshina, a place that was now haunted not by one, but two great tragedies. Levi couldn't even think of that little town without shuddering. The field littered with dead bodies, the buildings blown away by the explosion that took so many lives with it... Levi had seen his fair share of nightmarish events, but what happened at Shiganshina would surely haunt him for years to come.
He understood the urge to leave it behind in quickest manner, and, personally, Levi would prefer to quicken their pace even further, so they could reach safe lands as swiftly as was possible. But the horses were already tired from the lengthy travel, and they had a couple of injured among their ranks. Besides... he didn't have the power to decide.
The one who now was wielding that same power was sitting behind him, with arms tightly wrapped his middle torso. Her eyes were closed, her face pressed into the fabric of his cloak, but Levi knew she wasn't asleep. She didn't sleep at all throughout the night. Levi wondered when would Hange be able to sleep peacefully. After everything that had happened, after the responsibility Levi had placed upon her, he couldn't help but wonder if she could ever sleep peacefully.
These thoughts were troubling, but, then again, what wasn't troubling in their changing times?
Levi put the reins in his one hand, his another moving to rest on top of Hange's.
"Hey," he murmured in his softest voice. "Hange, we-"
"I know," the gruff way in which she was speaking was certainly alarming. There were but a handful of times, when Levi heard that tone of hers. It wasn't simple exhaustion - Hange was drained, weary to the bone. And her voice, it was laced with a helpless resignation so stark Levi had to suppress a shudder.
The times were changing. And it seemed like they were changing along with them.
"We're still too far from the Walls," Hange continued. "We need to make a detour, head to the forest."
That was a sound solution, one Levi was leaning towards as well. It was decided then, the only thing left was-
To give command.
Levi kept his eyes focused on the horizon, as he awaited to hear Hange's voice.
But instead of a shouted command, he heard a quiet, broken sound, something in between a bitter chuckle and a choking sob.
"Sorry," for a second Hange's hold on his cloak tightened. Levi lamented that it was the only way he could comfort her right now. He wasn't the one for affection and displays of love, but in that moment, he desperately wished to hug Hange, to hide her in his arms, protect from the cruel world around. He could do nothing, though, but continue to move forward. That was the only thing they were ever allowed to do. "I forgot I'm the one who has to do it now. I'm so used to Erwin doing that."
Before Levi could find his words, before he could get his voice to cooperate and stop shaking, Hange straightened on the horse.
She cleared her throat and, raising up her arm, yelled out, "Soldiers, turn to the left! We're heading to the Forest of Giant Trees!"
Hange waited for everyone to follow the command, then slumped back down, her face returning to the place in the crook of his neck.
"How did I do? I was so afraid my voice would get lost in the wind. I don't have the voice for this sort of job, I think."
"You did great," Levi assured, squeezing her hand slightly. His horse didn't seem to mind that he was steering it with just one hand. Besides, Hange needed his comfort a lot more. After everything that had happened, Levi needed Hange's comfort a lot more.
"How is your eye?"
"Awful," Hange answered. "It hurts like a bitch, but... not as much as everything else hurts."
"Hange," his vision swayed a little, the edges swimming. Levi tried to blame the rising sun for it. "Hange, listen, I'm so-"
"Shut up. I don't understand your reasons, that is true, but you did what you had to. Don't you even dare apologizing for it. I should be thanking you actually. If you haven't made it through... I don't know what I would have done without you, Levi."
"I thought I lost you," he confessed, his voice shaking at the last word. "When we saw that damn explosion, I thought you were its victim."
The memory alone was breaking him, and if Hange hadn't showed up on that roof... He pressed his hand to Hange's, interlacing their fingers.
"So thank you, Hange. For staying."
"We're the only ones that left," she muttered, voice muffled by his cloak.
It was crazy to think about it. It was hard to accept that everyone - Hange's and his squad, Nanaba, Mike, Moblit, Erwin - were no longer with them. It was a miracle that they were still together, a miracle that Levi had to thank Moblit for. The dedicated, loyal Moblit, he died as he had lived - caring for his Squad Leader. Levi could never thank him enough for this.
"We have to stick together," he agreed. "We have to... take care of each other. We'll make it through, Hange, I promise you."
"Of course," Hange's voice lost some of its heavy weight, the life returning to it. Without even looking at her, Levi knew that her lips were already curled up in a smile. A tight knot inside him started to loosen up. "Let's just stay together, and we'll be able to conquer any foe."
Just as the rising sun, the hope inside Levi was turning just as bright. Hange was right - while they were together, everything was possible.

El goes over to Steve’s to get out of the cabin for a little bit and they have pizza and board games and stuff.. so Steve’s house is a little messy so Steve’s dad comes home earlier then expected he freaks bc he can’t see el here so he goes upstairs and puts her in his room and his dad is pissed at the mess so basically el overhears how much of an ass his dad is :,)
tear my heart in half why don’t you?
ok but seriously, could I have just written a short and sweet ficlet on this gorgeous headcanon? yeah. do I have self control? no.
that is why instead I present to you a 6.3k deep dive
also on ao3
****
It’s just a little thing the two of them have going for them. El hated being left alone in the empty cabin when Hopper was on duty and would often sneak out to the Wheeler’s for some company. Usually it was fine. Mike would let her in through the basement door and she’d always made sure to be back before Hop. Usually hitching a ride on the back of Mike’s bike. It was a pretty perfect system. Hopper never found out and she got to get away from the lonely woods for at least a couple hours.
Until one time they weren’t home and Mike wasn’t answering on the walkie. it was cold out and dark and she wasn’t prepared to make the long walk back to the cabin. But she did anyway. Shivering as she tried to forget that her powers still weren’t working quite right. Trying to forget the fact that she was defenseless.
That’s when Steve had pulled up beside her in the beemer. Headlights bright in her eyes, only recognizing him once the lights went out and she could see him through the windshield.
Steve was safe. One of the few people she was told she could trust, despite Mike showing his own disdain for the guy. But she was told that was only because he dated Nancy, and he didn’t like Jonathan either for that very reason. So she trusted Steve. Felt a wave of relief wash over her when he pulled up beside her from where she was walking on Randolph Way.
He rolled down his window with the crank and stuck his head outside. The quick change from hot to cold biting his nose, making it run.
“It’s past nine, El. What are you doing out here? How did you get out here?”
El shrugged her shoulders. Rubbing her hands against her arms to generate some heat to combat the cold from the Indiana night air. “Walked. Came to see Mike.” She said. The words coming out with a breath that was visualized by a misty cloud as vapor froze.
“He wasn’t home?”
She shook her head. Arms still crossed over her chest, hands now tightly gripping the flannel she stole from Hopper’s closet. A calming mechanism she’d use when she felt like she was in trouble. A way of protecting her palms from her sharp and jagged fingernails because she had a habit of biting them when she was scared, which came more often now that her powers were only functioning at a ten percent capacity.
Steve didn’t have to think for very long before telling her to get in, and that he’d take her home.
He turned the heat up to the highest setting, and pulled out a blanket he had stored underneath his seat. Handed it over to her because he could see her lips had begun to turn to a bluish color. Steve spared her the talk about how she needed to be more careful. He wasn’t her Dad or her babysitter, even though he kind of was at times. But she was just a teenager who wanted to see her boyfriend, he did the same thing when he was her age, and still does it now. He figured he could leave that conversation up to her Dad, even if he suspected it wouldn’t do much to curb said behavior.
Instead they said nothing to each other the whole drive to the cabin, aside from words of direction since he had never navigated the path in the dark before. El never talked much in most situations, so it wasn’t weird.
When he pulled up, he noticed Hopper’s Blazer was unmistakably missing from the premises, and there was no light indicating anyone lived there other than the singular bulb hanging from their front porch that looked to be only days away from burning out. He waited for El to get out of his car and head inside, but she didn’t. She just sat there in his passenger seat with the blanket pulled up high enough so it covered her nose and mouth. Still and unmoving, staring at the front door that was illuminated by the dying light source with a pained expression evident in her light brown eyes.
“Everything okay?” Steve asks, with hesitation clear in the way his voice cracks with a whispered tone. The dead silence of the empty forest creating an unnerving tension that made them both feel like just the sound of a pin dropping to the floor could set something off.
She heaved a sigh, the shakiness clear. “Could you stay? Until Hop gets home?”
She didn’t have to explain it to Steve. Just looking at the Cabin gave him the same feeling that looking at his own house did. Empty and abandoned and lonely. That’s why he was out driving that night. He had no destination other than anywhere but his house. He hated the way the floorboards creaked so loud in the silence and echoed around the house. Didn’t like the way he could hear the sounds of water droplets dripping from the bathroom sink from all the way upstairs. Didn’t like the solitary feeling of it all. Not even a ghostly presence to keep him company. Just him and his thoughts. Never a good combination.
So he agreed. Turning the key and shutting off the car, flipping off the headlights and following her inside. He liked El, and it was much better than going back to his vacant home on the outskirts of Hawkins.
He’d never been inside before. The only times he’d ever come by was to drop off Dustin and the rest of the party when El was still on probation from leaving the Cabin. For those he’d never leave the comfort of his drivers seat.
El flipped on the lights and he was greeted by a sight juxtaposed from the outside’s appearance. The outside looked abandoned. Rusted and worn. Moss growing on the roof, breaks in the wooden steps leading up to the porch, unmanicured ground covered in rotting leaves from the previous Fall. The inside, however, was lively. Sure, it still looked a little run down and had the rustic feel to it, but it looked like a home. Warm and cozy, messy with different books strewn across the floor, clothes hung on the backs of chairs, vinyl records stacked haphazardly next to the turntable. The sink was full of dishes that needed to be done, a laundry basket full of clothes that needed to be folded. It was clear that someone lived here. Like really lived here. Not like his house which was always kept clean and proper. Fancy decorations cluttered the halls, carpets were vacuumed and floors were swept. Steve never got behind on doing his dishes or laundry because there was never much for him to do with it only being the product of one person. And what else was he supposed to do to occupy his time? He preferred the sound of the running water or the rattle of the laundry machine or the loud hum of the vacuum cleaner as it picked up debris over the echoes of his own thoughts. He had to keep it clean anyway because his parents always came home without warning, and always expected the house to look just as pristine as they left it. So the house always looked more like a museum filled with expensive art and less like a home with dirty dishes and crumbs on the floor that indicated proper use.
He felt a warm feeling inside the cabin. Feeling the coziness radiate through him as he sat down on the couch. Rips in the upholstery, beer stained cushions. Comfortable. Like sitting on a cloud.
El was in the kitchen, rummaging through the freezer, he assumed she was just hungry. Maybe she had been expecting to eat at Mike’s house. He always did save her some leftovers just in case. He’d done so for all three hundred fifty two days she was “missing” and continued even after she was found.
He looked through the books that were scattered all over the floor as she did her thing. Noticing books his parents used to read him when he was little. Many of them by Dr. Suess. The Lorax, Green eggs and Ham. Some “I Can Read” books that looked to be well below her level, and several books he didn’t recognize at all like “Alexander the Magical Mouse”. She must have liked that one a lot considering the spine had been creased and torn and the edges were folding in.
He was pulled from his thoughts by the sudden sound of the pop of the toaster oven. Hearing the slight sizzle of whatever had been cooking.
He turned around to see Eleven carrying two plates with Eggos on them. Already coated in butter and syrup, holding one out to him.
“I made you some.” It’s the first thing she’s said since they’d walked through the door. She wasn’t shy, she just didn’t talk a lot, having only ever been allowed to speak if she had something important to say, often going hours or even days without even having anyone to say those things to. It was no wonder she didn’t want to be alone in that cabin.
He took a seat with her at their little table. Big enough for just two people, perfect for just El and Hopper, and perfect for just the two of them now. He could tell the seat he was sitting in was typically the seat Hopper sat at. The table had cigarette burns on only that side, and he knew those didn’t come from El. Her side of the table had clear indication of someone who used a lot of syrup. Dried maple drops stuck to the wood. He dug into his waffles, which looked to have been cooked to perfection. Golden brown with a nice crunch as he cut off a piece with the side of his fork. She looked up at him and smiled before shoving a large bite into her mouth. Nearly half a waffle’s worth. Syrup escaped past her lips as she closed her mouth around the fork, sticking to the outside of her cheeks.
“You got a little.” He gestured to his own cheek, tapping it twice.
She stifled a laugh with her mouth full and wiped away at it with her sleeve.
It was nice seeing her laugh. El had a smile that brightened up a whole room. The one thing about her that not many people had, you know, aside from the whole ‘having powers’ thing, was that she said what she meant, and she meant what she said. You never had to worry about her faking a smile for your benefit, or worry about her lying to you. She was honest even if that sometimes got her into trouble. So when she smiled at him and laughed, he knew she was happy. Happy he was there, and so was he.
Before she stuffed a second bite into her mouth, still chewing the remnants of the first, they could hear the roar of a familiar engine. Headlights beginning to peek through the gaps in the curtains. El didn’t seem nearly as on edge as he was that Hopper was home. Steve was in his house. Uninvited. Okay he was invited by El, but not by Hopper and that’s what mattered more, right?
Steve wasn’t necessarily scared of Hopper per se. But he definitely tried to avoid being on his bad side at all costs.
But hey, it’s not like Steve had done anything wrong. On the contrary. He kind of rescued her, not that she really needed it. She survived months during Hawkins winter out on her own in the woods. But the point was, he should thank him.
At least Hopper should recognize Steve’s beemer out front so when he opens the door to his house Steve’s presence isn’t a total surprise. Like he won’t walk in guns blazing at the intruder who’s in his house with his daughter.
Okay should he be worried?
Luckily for Steve, Hopper walks through the door with his gun securely in his holster and sans a look of rage. More so a look of confusion.
“What are you doing here kid?”
El gives him a pointed look. Almost like she’s trying to use her mind powers on him. Get him to not tell Hopper that she was out by herself after nine at night in the cold… to see her boyfriend.
But here’s the thing. Steve likes El. He really does. But he’s far more terrified of what Hopper might do to him if he lies to his face about Eleven’s whereabouts.
He gives her a look back. An apologetic one.
“She was out wandering in the cold so I brought her back home. Decided to stay until you arrived.” Steve decided to leave out the part about her going to Mike’s house. Figured that’s better left unsaid.
Hopper pursed his lips. Nodding his head with his arms crossed, clearly trying to keep himself from yelling. He’s gotten better about that lately.
El is once again gripping the cloth of the flannel she is wearing tightly. Bowing her head and squeezing her eyes shut tight.
“Why did you go out El?” Hopper asks. His voice was a strained kind of calm. A calm that if you pushed slightly too far could easily go away.
“I don’t like being here alone. Not after everything.”
Oh yeah. Everything.
Everything being Starcourt. Those painful couple of days when she didn’t even know where he was while the rest of the world was falling apart in front of her. Those several hours before he finally emerged from under the Russian base below the mall. Hours without hearing from him, not even a confirmation that he was alive. And no way to confirm it for herself with her powers completely drained. All she could get was a black void. She couldn’t see anything at all.
Steve got a similar feeling. He’d experienced loneliness before. But nothing like when he was trapped in that room with those Russian guards. Beating the ever living shit out of him and no matter what he did or said, it wouldn’t stop until he was completely unconscious. The unconsciousness coming much later than he’d hoped it would. He could still sometimes feel his eye twitch with phantom pains from the damage done that night. He recognized it very distinctly from the memories of previous black eyes he’s received in the somehow two fights he’s lost. He also understands the feeling of dread that she felt when she didn’t know where Hopper was. He had that same feeling with Erica and Dustin. Not knowing whether they made it out alive. Had the same dread with Robin. Feeling her back pressed up against his as they were tied up in chairs and threatened with torture, knowing he was the one who brought her into all of this. Knowing that whatever happens to her is blood on his hands. That point where he had to make a quick decision and slam his car into the side of Billy.
Billy.
Feeling the shockwaves pass through him. His head jerk forward upon impact. Watching as the Camaro burst into flames in a blinding blaze. That moment of not knowing whether or not he survived the crash, not knowing if that was a good or bad thing, and not even having the time to even think about it before he’s piling into the back of the Wheeler’s station wagon and driving away from the mall.
So yeah, Steve got it.
Hopper’s face fell into a frown and he decided not to press the issue further.
“We’ll talk about it later. Finish up your waffles and get ready for bed. I’ll walk Steve out.” Hopper said. Wiping at his nose and taking off his hat and hanging it on the hook by the door.
El finished her waffles rather quickly. She practically inhaled the contents of her plate. Not sparing a moment of time before shoving another piece into her mouth. Messy enough making it clear that the syrup stains on the table were most definitely her doing. Steve finished up his own and promptly followed Hopper out onto the porch after putting his dirtied plate into the sink of dirty dishes.
“Thanks for bringing her home, son. I really appreciate it.”
“It’s no problem, chief.”
“You wanna smoke?” Hopper asks, pulling a pack and lighter out from his shirt pocket and pulling one out, offering it up for Steve to take.
This was definitely weird. Smoking with adults. Hopper nonetheless. Sure he was of age, but that didn’t make it any less weird.
He accepted the cigarette anyway, because it was cold and god he could really use one right about now. He let Hopper light it up for him and he took a long drag, letting the smoke fill his lungs creating a burning sensation he grew to enjoy. It almost functioned as proof that he was a living human being. Feeling as the damage was done to his internal organs, reminder that he was alive. Not lost to the void he felt like he drifted into so often.
“So what are you doing right now? You graduated right?”
“Yup.” Steve replied. Popping the ‘p’. As if basically scraping by the G.P.A. decent enough to walk across that podium was something to celebrate. His father most certainly didn’t think so.
“College?”
And that was the reason why. He couldn’t get an acceptance letter from anywhere. Not even the schools that supposedly accepted everyone and didn’t even send out rejection letters. Steve was living breathing proof that they did.
“No. Working mornings at Family Video.” He tried to say it with at least a little pride. Like, hey, at least he wasn’t a total bum living off his parents dime. At least he was doing something with his life. Even if that something was a dead end job in a dead end town.
“It’s honest work, kid. Good for you. College ain’t for everyone. I most certainly wasn’t cut out for it.” Hopper tightly gripped his shoulder and shook him a bit. In a way that seemed fatherly while also being a way his own father never interacted with him.
And god that statement felt good to hear. That acknowledgment and validation that Steve wasn’t just wasting his life away at that job. Validation for his hard work and attempt at bettering himself. Felt good, especially coming from someone so accomplished as him. Steve could only smile, unable to come up with any worthy response to that.
“So mornings. What’s your availability like in the evenings?”
“Typically free. Sometimes I get called out to cover for the night shift, but that doesn’t happen often. Why?”
Hopper put out his cigarette in the ashtray sitting on the porch ledge.
“Well, it would be nice having someone watch El when I’m patrolling at night. I don’t like leaving her here alone, and now I know she doesn’t like it either. And I’d rather her spend that time with you than Mike.” The way he says the name like it’s a slur almost has Steve laughing.
Okay look. Steve didn’t really tell the whole truth right there. His house isn’t always empty. He’s not always free. But it’s best he didn’t divulge that information to a man with a gun in the middle of the woods.
Instead he said yes. Because he wasn’t her babysitter, but he might as well be.
And he also had no idea how to say no to Hopper. Another thing you wouldn’t want to say to a man with a gun in the middle of the woods.
That was how it started. Hopper randomly calling up his house and calling him over to the cabin. Sometimes just choosing to drop her off at his house instead because he didn’t have the time to circle back. Luckily those times he didn’t have the company of a very recognizable blue Camaro parked in his driveway. And eventually everything became routine. Figuring out the patterns of Hopper’s work schedule so he was better prepared for those surprise visits. Eventually telling Hop to just keep bringing her over to his because it was on the way to the station and safer for the rest of the kids to travel to for the occasional hangouts he begrudgingly chaperoned.
Hopper did eventually catch them red handed. Or more accurately, with his pants down. He didn’t hear the phone ring and it was instead the honk of his horn that pulled the two from their current distraction. No point in trying to hide what they were doing with an elaborate lie as soon as Hopper yelled from outside “Harrington. Hargrove. Pull your damn pants up and get out here!”
They couldn’t be that loud. Could they?
Steve didn’t even want to entertain that thought.
When they did the walk of shame out the front door, heads bowed and arms crossed over themselves, Hopper was standing there with his hands on his hips. A stance that looked almost ridiculous on him, but also struck enough fear in the two of them that it silenced their laughs.
“Sorry.” Is all Steve could say. Unable to even look him in the eyes. Focusing his attention on El who sat in the passenger seat of the Blazer. Looking entirely confused. Good. She should be.
“No. No. My fault. I should have called. Uh, you still up for watching El tonight?” Hopper’s eyes darted between the two boys. They were all very uncomfortable in this current situation, and they were all equally desperate for the conversation to come to an end.
Billy looked over at Steve, both faces matching with the same kind of confusion. Distinctly different confusion than the look that washed over El’s face.
“Uh. Yeah I can go home, he can watch her.” Billy said, already moving his feet to leave.
“You don’t have to go. Hell, it’d be nice having someone who has actually won a fight around her.”
“Hey! I’ve won a fight.” Steve interjects, earning a small chuckle out of Billy.
“I didn’t see it. Doesn’t count.” Steve scoffs at the reply. “Anyway, point is, he can stay if he wants. Just no funny business if you don’t mind.”
Billy and Steve both blush simultaneously and nod their heads a little too aggressively. “Yes sir.” Says Billy.
Hopper tips his hat at the boys who are both just standing there stunned and trying to figure out if they just had a near death experience or not. Not before long El is getting out of the car and Hopper’s pulling out of the driveway and suddenly his house feels 300% fuller.
Billy stays sometimes for her visits now, but they don’t make too much of a habit of it. Still concerned about how the nature of their relationship looks to have a young girl in their presence. It’s wrong and stupid, but most people were nowadays. Despite Hopper’s insistence on being okay with it, they couldn’t put that much trust in people.
Except for maybe El. That girl he would trust with his life. No questions asked.
It took awhile for her to actually get what was going on. Not that they were together in the first place, that part she deduced pretty quickly. It was more so the reason that they were so private about it that she didn’t get. She didn’t get why she couldn’t tell Max or the party or anyone else for that matter. They’d constantly brush it off with an “it’s complicated” because they didn’t find joy in telling this sweet and innocent girl how terrible the world could be. But to El it was perfectly simple. Billy and Steve love each other like El and Mike love each other. Easy, straightforward. When they finally explained it to her, how “stupid people don’t think two men should be able to love each other” they could see the anger clear on her face. Veins popping out on her forehead and a red tint forming beneath the skin on her face. They explained how people might go as far as to hurt them if they found out. Her face only got redder and the clench of her fists only grew tighter.
“Bad people.” She called them.
They would just nod their heads in agreement.
“Does that mean Max and Mike and everyone else are bad people? Because I can’t tell them?”
That was a hard question to answer. A question that they tried to avoid thinking about yet always seemed to be at the back of their minds. Because they might be. And that was scary to think about. Steve liked to think that Dustin wouldn’t look at him any differently, the same with Billy about Max. They thought highly enough of them that they never liked to entertain the thought that they could potentially be “bad people.” But there was always the potential that they could.
Still they answered with a no. Because even if they did end up being “bad people” they weren’t bad people. “I don’t think they are,” Steve started. “But the more people that find out, the higher the chance some really bad people might find out. It’s safer to keep the bubble small. Is that okay?”
El nodded in agreement, and the three of them quickly went back to what they were doing like they didn’t just have a really deep conversation. It was scrabble. Thought it might be a more fun way of teaching El new words instead of just shoving a book into her face. She seemed to enjoy it, and was able to come up with some surprisingly long words. A huge grin popped onto her face when she was able to spell out the word “compromise.”
“Hop taught me that one.”
Eighteen points.
Nobody expected it to be Billy who was trying to pass off made up words.
But for the most time, it was just Steve and El. No party get together’s. No Billy. Just the two of them, pizza delivery, board games and movies. And it was honestly a blast.
Steve never thought it would be so much fun to make a mess like this. Paper plates scattered across the floor along with loose puzzle pieces and an array of VHS tapes strewn in front of the TV so they were easier to look through. Usually when something was out of place, Steve felt an overwhelming need to put it back. To keep things clean, neat, and tidy. That’s how he was raised. Vases dusted, dishes cleaned, laundry folded and put away. But he was behind on laundry and the only reason his sink wasn’t full was because he’d been eating off disposables since El wandered into his every day. Which reminded him. The trash needed to be taken out yesterday.
Usually the chaos would have him losing his mind. Like the way it did when he first snuck into Billy’s bedroom and was met with dozens of beer cans everywhere the eye could see. Hamper piled high with dirty laundry, and that was just what made it into the basket. And god it reeked of smoke and teenage boy. Like the combination of a wrestling mat and a casino. He had actual car parts sitting in his closet that he’d stolen from the junkyard. His room was a junkyard. But he’d never tell him that. Just kindly suggest that perhaps he wipe down some surfaces with disinfecting wipes because there are definitely some eradicated diseases living freely underneath his bed where he could see a large collection of socks. Yeah. He knew what those were.
But this was a mess he could handle. It wasn’t a hotel for rats like Billy’s room was. It was more like how he described Hopper’s cabin. Lived in. Proof that there were people having a good time and living there. Finally getting the living room to live up to its title. When he looked out across the mess of food and games and the fallen down fort they attempted to build, the word home started to feel like an apt word to describe the place. It felt like it was his and not like just some place he slept at night or the place he parked his car and had his paycheck sent to.
He’d be regretting letting it get so messy when he heard the familiar purr of a car outside. Distinctly not the roar of the Camaro or the rumble of the Blazer. No it was the purr of his father’s Buick.
He looked out once again over the mess in his living room.
He was going to be pissed.
El noticed the way his face fell when the sound had echoed outside. And then Steve noticed El.
He couldn’t see her here. She was allowed to be out in public but it was still slow going as far as who she was and how she was the chief's daughter. He didn’t want to take any risks.
“El. I’m going to need you to hide in my room. My Dad can’t see you. He won’t go in there.” Steve’s trying to stay calm so he doesn’t alarm her, but reading people’s emotions is something she’s really good at. Not sure if it’s a feature of her powers or just her, but she can always tell if you’re faking a smile and she can feel the emotions that lurk beneath the surface like an empath. So naturally she started to grow fearful as well.
“What’s going on?” She’s still sitting on the floor but appears to at least be shifting her legs to raise herself up. But it’s like everything is moving through molasses but his father’s footsteps don’t seem to be slowing at all.
“My Dad’s home. Take the back steps upstairs and lock yourself in my room. I promise I won’t be long, okay?”
She nods her head, she can see the urgency in his voice so she takes no time at all before sprinting up the stairs and finding Steve’s bedroom.
When she walks inside she realizes she’s never actually been in there before. Only knowing of its location after seeing Steve walk in and out of it from the base of the stairs. It’s not quite what she was expecting.
It was boring. Flannel wallpaper with a perfectly made bed. Shelves organized containing nothing of significance upon them. It looked like one of those bedrooms she saw in furniture catalogs. Steve wasn’t boring. He had a fun and bright personality. He screamed bright blues and bright reds, not the dull greens, grays, and browns that decorated his room.
Then there was an unexpected noise coming from down the steps. The walls were thin, she could hear everything so clearly.
“What the hell is all of this, Steven?” The voice was low and thunderous. Resonating through the entire house. It kind of reminded her of Hopper’s voice, but the underlying tone was distinctly different. There was a condescension to it that she rarely heard out of him. Almost like he was talking down to him. “You’re expected to keep this house clean, and you can’t even do that? How did I get stuck with such a stupid fuck up for a son?” The swears and insults rolled off his tongue like second nature and it made El’s blood boil.
She pressed her ear to the door to get a clearer picture, Steve talked in a very quiet voice in comparison to the fortissimo of Mr. Harrington’s.
“I was just getting ready to clean it up. I had a couple of friends over and they just left. I didn’t know you’d be home, I’m sorry.”
“I don’t let you live under my roof for you to be throwing parties Steven! You should be spending that time actually making something of yourself so I don’t have to explain to my friends what an embarrassment you’ve become.”
“I work full time Dad!”
“Don’t you raise your voice at me.” Steve had barely even gotten louder. “What? You think a career at Family Video is some kind of achievement?”
El could feel the tension in the room as it fell silent. She wanted to burst from that room and fling him through a wall. Break his arm.
Mouthbreather.
“Your mother will be home in a few hours, she stopped to see a friend. You will have this mess cleaned up before she gets home and you will help her with her luggage. Understand?”
“Understand.” Steve’s voice sounded broken. Cracking with an inconsistent tone.
“I’ll be in my office. Don’t disturb me.”
The only sounds that follow that line are the sounds of shuffling feet and a slam of a door downstairs. She’s startled when she hears the gentle knock against Steve’s bedroom door.
“You can unlock the door now.” He says.
She does so quietly. Slowly turning the lock so not to make sound that Mr. Harrington could potentially hear.
When she gets the door open she’s met with a Steve that she’s never seen before. He’s squeezing the bridge of his nose and his eyes are red and glossy. His cheeks are pink from wiping abrasively against tears that fell upon them.
“I need to get you home, okay? I can um… I can call Hop or someone to stay with you if you need. I’m sorry.”
El just doesn’t know what to say to him. Doesn’t know how to make things better without her powers.
So she just hugs him. Wraps her arms around his waist tight and lets her head rest where it meets his chest. Squeezing gently just waiting for him to return the gesture.
Which he does, albeit, hesitantly and guarded. Barely letting his own hands come in contact with her shoulders. She’s so small, and if he didn’t already know the strength she was capable of he’d be worried he could break her.
“Bad man.” She whispers.
Steve fights off the tears and squeezes her tighter.
“I’m sorry you had to hear that.” Is all he can say.
The two of them quietly sneak out the front door. Steve knows his Dad wouldn’t care if he left so long as he did what he was asked. He’d picked up the mess and took the trash with him on the way out.
The two pile into the Beemer and Steve quickly turns on the music to distract himself from the words rattling around in his head. Letting the sounds of Metallica play over his speakers. Billy was always doing that. Shoving one of the tapes he made for Steve into the stereo when he wasn’t looking.
Look, a successful distraction!
But they barely made it a mile down the road before El was turning the knob to the left and the car quickly fell silent. She doesn’t look over at him when she says it. Just looks out the window at passing trees and street lights. Watching as power lines appear to move like ocean waves. Up and down, up and down. Fiddling with the cuffs of her shirt like she’s fearful of the words that were to come out of her mouth.
“Is your Dad like Papa?”
She wasn’t afraid of the question, but she was afraid of the answer. Steve knew who Papa was. They all did and were explicitly instructed to avoid that topic at all costs. But she was the one bringing him up.
“No he’s not like Papa.”
“But he’s a bad man.” She says matter of factly.
“Sometimes he is. Yes.”
“Is your Dad like Billy’s Dad?”
That one stung a little too sharply. Not at the premise of his father potentially being like that, but the reminder of Billy. That he was still there under that damn roof with that poor excuse of a man. And that he wouldn’t let Steve protect him no matter how hard he tried and how far he pushed.
That was another thing El knew that most people didn’t know. Another secret she was forced to keep. One she chose to keep on her own, recognizing it wouldn’t be fair to share the things she learned from entering into his mind without giving him a choice in the matter.
Steve was sometimes grateful for that. The fact that El respected Billy and showed him nothing but kindness. But so often he’d wish she’d just spill it all to Hopper. Do the thing Steve didn’t have the strength to do himself.
“No. He’s not like Billy’s Dad.”
“But that doesn’t make it okay.” She looks at him this time. Reaching over the center console to place a hand gently on top of one of his outstretched hands that tightly gripped the steering wheel.
He lets a tear fall. “You’re right. It doesn’t.”
The rest of the drive is silent. The only sounds are the purr of the engine and the tires rolling over rough asphalt.
Pulling up to the cabin with El in the passenger seat felt a lot like that first time he took her home. That same painful silence and that same hesitation as they sat in front of the cabin from the comfort of the cabin. Staring out at the porch. The lightbulb that looked almost dead last time now replaced with a brand new one that shined bright and illuminated the whole front of the house.
He was half hoping she would ask for him to stay. Not wanting to go back to that house alone with his Dad. He wanted to go to Billy. Crawl in through his window and curl up next to him in his bed. Make himself feel safe by making Billy feel safe. He’d accept crashing on Hopper’s couch if that was all he could get.
But he knew he couldn’t. Knew he had to get home despite having every reason not to.
“Steve?” She said, grabbing his attention.
“Yeah?”
She opened the car door and stepped out, looking at him intensely through the open door.
“You’re not stupid.”
That right there made him smile much more than her asking him to stay ever would.

so. i had an idea about will and mike as bucky and steve for halloween (in some strange alternate timeline bc comics), then @zombiebowlcut came up with the best idea of those comics not being so fantasy after all...there have been weirder things living in hawkins. despite the show’s title, this is the strangest thing i’ve ever written. pls excuse the word dump (and being four months late):
“Are you sure we should go up?” Mike asked, gripping his pillowcase around his hand. “I don’t really know who lives there. And we’re a bit older than the other kids... Maybe they’ll be upset with us.”
“They live in two streets down, Mike.” Will said, taking another step forward. “They can’t be evil.”
“Uh, you have lived in this town, right?”
“Yes, and we’re probably the most dangerous things in your neighborhood for miles.” Will laughed and grabbed Mike’s hand. “Come on, Super Soldier! Where’s your sense of adventure?”
“In my basement, on the couch with you under my arm.” Mike tried to argue with very little heat. He readjusted his homemade shield on his back, teasing Will with a throw.
“One more house and then we’ll go back.” Will promised, starting to drag Mike along. The well-decorated sleeve and glove may have been impressive as a false metal arm, but it couldn’t do much to contribute to moving Mike forward. “Michael, come on.”
“No, don’t use that voice on me.” Mike laughed, yanking on Will’s hand in return.
Will stumbled forward into Mike, trying to catch his fall by pressing his hands against his chest. It was a sure-fire way to get Mike’s arm around his shoulders and lips pressing a kiss onto the top of his head. Will played right into it, and never minded-- but also knew they were out in public. As much as Will said anyone living in Mike’s neighborhood, or anyone adjacent by that means, wasn’t evil, they were definitely not very progressive. At least, that’s what Will had come to understand.
They separated before anyone around them could even spare half a glance. Will grabbed his pillowcase with both hands and led Mike up to the door. They knocked twice, immediately startled by the sound of a dog barking. Mike reached his hand out and braced Will’s back, lifting his eyebrows.
“If you say the people aren’t evil, the dog definitely isn’t.” Mike whispered with a chuckle. His hand splayed across Will’s back, pushing him up but also pulling him a fraction closer. Their shoulders touched and Will couldn’t help but smile.
His smile faded as the door swung open on them, the sound of the turning knob completely unnoticed in their moment.
A tall man, not much older than their parents-- if at all-- stood in the door. The dog they’d heard was now silent, and barely noticeable, standing behind the man. Will tried not to be rude, and forced his eyes to stay on the man’s eyes and not the knotted long sleeve hanging only two inches from his left shoulder. He smiled and let their “trick or treat” hang in the air.
“Hey, sweetheart? You might want to come see this.” The man leaned back and called into the house. “We finally got kids.”
“What? We weren’t even trying this time.” The voice that emerged down the hall was that of another man. Will tried to keep his face still again. That was another man. And the rugged man standing before him just called him sweetheart with the most sincere and soft voice Will had ever heard-- outside of Mike’s. He knew what that meant, but he still didn’t know what to expect.
“I think they have great costumes, what about you?”
The two men stood in the door frame with bright smiles on their faces. One was blond, holding a bowl of candy in one hand while the other went around the waist of the man holding the door. They looked homey and comfortable. They looked happy-- and they were living in Hawkins.
But they also looked... strangely familiar. Separately, Will was sure they’d mean nothing to him-- hell, he’d probably passed them before in the supermarket-- but standing together, there was something itching at Will’s brain. He blinked, pillowcase still closed and by his side, and turned to Mike. He was standing with his mouth wide open, eyes the biggest Will’s ever seen.
Will was embarrassed, thinking it was the shock of seeing another genuinely open couple out in Hawkins, but another sense of embarrassment overtook him.
He looked down at his costume, then over at Mike’s. Oh. Oh no.
“You know, Buck, I think they do look pretty sharp.”  Will refused to believe who was speaking. But he knew it. He heard the name. He knew the comics were based on real people-- on a real conspiracy. God, why does every secret go to hide in Hawkins? And why does it always find him?
“They do... I just... I can’t place who this one is.” Buc-- no. They weren’t young twenty-year old soldiers. They were war veterans now, Will thought-- Mr. Barnes pointed at Will lightly. It wasn’t accusatory, but Will still felt himself shrink under it.
“Well, we have Captain Marvel over here.” Mr. Rogers said, motioning to Mike with the candy bowl. “And this has to be Million Dollar Man.”
“No. No. That’s Ironman.” Mr. Barnes said quickly, poking Mr. Roger’s stomach playfully. “That has to be Ironman.”
"You know what, you’re right.” Mr. Rogers nodded slowly. He leaned over and kissed Mr. Barnes’ cheek and Will thought he was going to fall over. He reached over and grabbed Mike’s arm instinctively. Mike was already in the process of reaching over and intercepted his hand halfway.
Then they were stood there, holding hands in front of their costumes’ namesakes. Looking like complete idiots; in love, and probably in the safest place to do so definitely, but complete fucking idiots.
“Not to extend a strange gesture but,” Mr. Rogers peered over their heads at the chattering groups of children down by the street. There were eyes everywhere. “would you boys like to step in for a moment?”
“A-Are you sure?” Mike sounded like the words were choking him. Being polite had never been so difficult.
“If it’s too strange to ask, we understand.”
“Trust me.” Will said with a sigh. “It’s not weird. We’ve uh, we’ve dealt with weirder.”
“Like this?” Mike said under his breath. “El is pretty tame compared to this.”
“I just put some water on for tea.” Mr. Rogers said, motioning over his shoulder.
“You drink tea?” Mike said suddenly, as if that was the most important thing. Will pulled on Mike’s hand, nearly knocking him over.
“Michael!”
“I’m just... surprised is all!” Mike hissed, face going beat red.
“What? Do regular people not drink tea anymore?” Mr. Rogers laughed. “Are we really that outdated?”
“No, that’s you. You’re the one who’s old. I’m surprisingly still ‘with it’, Steve.” Mr. Barnes shrugged. “I mean, I’ve got the cool kids dressing like me. How come I don’t see you around that often?”
“I-I uh, I don’t like in this development. Mike does.” Will said, still squeezing his hand.
“Mike... Wait! Wheeler, right?” Mr. Rogers was hit with realization, but didn’t look very pleased. “Ted, right? That’s your dad?”
“Yeah.” Will could see the horror on his face; if Ted had no problems shouting at his son just outside of church everything he thought about him-- and his plans to go out with Will on God’s day-- then Will could only imagine what he’d tell strangers.
“I’ll offer again-- do you want tea?” This time, the offer felt heavy. It wasn’t about the tea; it was an impromptu shelter thrown over their heads. A chance to take off their disguises on a night all about costumes. They nodded. “Great! Please, come in, Mike and...”
“Will. This is my boyfriend, Will.” Mike had never spoken the word aloud to anyone but their friends. Never to someone over the age of twenty. Will had never heard Mike come out with such ease. He was fearless-- or at least calculating the damage very quickly.
“Nice to meet you, Will.” Mr. Rogers nodded to Will, smiling. He seemed to be just as relieved to meet them as Mike and Will were.
“Come on in, Will. Oh- and don’t mind Tasha, she’s just my service dog. Since I’m with Steve she knows she’s not working so she will bother you to pet her. You can.” Mr. Barnes stepped back and grabbed the dog’s collar carefully. He kept her at a distance as both Mike and Will stepped into the foyer. “She’s really friendly.”
“You have a service dog.” It wasn’t much of a question. “Does she... help?”
"Yeah.” He nodded and his single word seemed to collect more weight the longer he let it sit in the silence. “When I first came back, she was a really big help. If you, uh, if you ever need a dog to sit with, Tasha’s your girl.”
“We should get you a dog, Will.” Mike said offhandedly, placing a hand on his back. “I’m sure your mom would like another one.”
“You think so?” Will asked. He’d never thought anyone considered his weird nightmares worthy of that much help. Maybe he’d have to try.
“Totally.”
“Well, if you ever need help with anything, I’d be happy to talk to your mother. Or whoever.” Mr. Barnes offered, walking forward.
“D-Do you know my mom too?” Will was sure most people in the neighborhood knew his mother. She never let her presence be discovered; she liked to let everyone know as soon as possible who she was and why one should never pushed her around. Will loved his mom-- and his brother-- they always made introductions mildly unnecessary. It even seemed like introducing himself to Mr. Barnes and Mr. Rogers was redundant.
“Of course we do.” Mr. Rogers stepped quickly around the dining table and waved the boys to the kitchen. “She’s the sweetest. Always helps Buck pack his car when he goes to Melvald’s.”
Mike sat down at the kitchen counter first, holding his am out and waiting for Will to sit beside him. It was something Mike would only do if they were alone together, but for once the audience didn’t seem to feel like other watching eyes. Mr. Rogers and Mr. Barnes didn’t hover on their closeness; they moved around the kitchen grabbing mugs and bags of tea.
“You know, Will, Hopper would probably like another dog too.” Mike said. “You can’t lose.”
“And if I do, you could definitely beat him up again.”
“I did not beat him up-- I was like, thirteen! He’s like triple my age!”
“Michael, just admit it you did!” He leaned in and whispered. “That’s not very Captain of you...”
“Will, I did not!”
“I’m sorry, did you say you just... beat up a grown man?” Mr. Rogers said with a laugh, turning around. Mr. Barnes chuckled quietly and shook his head.
“He beat up the chief of police.” Will corrected. He never saw it himself, but Lucas was a great storyteller, even years later.
“Oh god.” Mr. Barnes laughed again. “Sounds like someone else I know.”
“That’s my boy.” Mr. Rogers said with a proud smile. “You have him on the ropes, huh? Really at your mercy?”
“Definitely.” Mike nodded, rolling his eyes. “I literally fought the law.”
“He really deserves to wear those colors, doesn’t he, Buck?” Mr. Rogers smiled, but it wore differently on his face than one of simple amusement. He looked proud, relieved almost; there was someone else. “Good to know some people in this town have some fight left in them.”
“Left?” Mr. Barnes echoed. “Oh, Steve, I don’t think these kids have even gotten started. They’ve raised some hell but, they’ve only started. You don’t fight a cop as your last offence.”
“That’s true.” Mr. Rogers slid the two mugs toward them. He looked at him, almost studying him-- both of them. “They’re heroes. I can tell.”
“Uh,” Mike reached for the mug impulsively. “I don’t think a whole army of--”
“Oh no.” Mr. Rogers lifted his own mug to his lips. His gaze cut through the tight coil of steam to the both of them. Mike’s arm was still arm Will’s shoulders. “We’re still fighting the same thing. Monsters and bad men are all the same-- it’s just hate changing shape.”
“But,” Will spoke quickly, as if his answer startled him.”I think love changes shape too.”
Mr. Rogers paused, blinking. “I suppose you’re right about that. Think it’s in pretty good shape now, don’t you?”
Will spun his mug around slowly. He leaned into Mike’s side, his mouth crumpling into an embarrassed smile. “Yeah. I like to think so... Can probably take on a whole lot more evil.” Will sighed. He knew it wasn’t a hypothetical.
“Let’s not go looking for trouble, please.” Mike muttered, nudging Will’s side. He refrained from kissing the side of his head. “I don’t want anyone to ruin the best night of the year--”
“Again.”
“--again.”
“Don’t worry. I think we’re fine,” Will said, reaching to tap Mike’s faux-armor. “I think we’re safe.” He paused, looking at Mike like they were back in his basement-- or sitting safe by his bed, but hidden from the door-- all alone. “We’re safe, Mike. I can feel it.”

I read your tags on that byeler post and holy shit i love u this made my day like this day just started but i wont read anything better, pls do tell more
OH MY GOD THANK YOU???!!!!! that whole thing took me like 45 minutes to write oh my god, its so nice to be noticed for once haha (also ur day just started? I’m so glad I made ur whole day lmao. It’s currently nighttime where I am.) Anyway, tumblr deleted like half of my tags from that post cuz I guess I wrote too many? idk man, it was horrible, whenever I tag posts I always check it on my blog to see if it worked correctly cuz tunglr.cob is always messing things up and BOI WHEN I SAW THAT I WAS FUCKING LIVID OH MY GOD U HAVE NO IDEA. Ok so I’m going to try and recreate my tags below from memory, in bulleted form. they won’t be exact but I’ll try my best (here’s the post now go read my tags if u haven’t seen them lol)
If you ask mike, it was only lasted a few days, and the rest of the gang looks into the camera like they’re on the office
At first, mike is pretty nervous about the topic, like he’s super worried (mike: do u h8 me bc I like bois 2???)
(Literally everyone at once: are you serious?? Have you seen will, That boy is gay as fuck.) (will didn’t say the second part he was not ready for that, ya boi was shook)
Mike is “low-key” relieved (and by low-key I mean extremely high key that boy literally collapsed on the couch from relief)
(Dustin: Mike seriously?? We’re ur best friends how could we possibly hate u??)
Even if any of them did have qualms, they wouldn’t show it. They were all outcasts, and they stuck together no matter what
Lets be real tho, they probably didn’t they are all best friends and love each other unconditionally
Mike hasn’t told anyone that he has a crush on will (eleven: Crush?? Mike ur literally in love with him.) he actually begs eleven not to tell them (Mike: Please, you can’t say anything to them, I’m not ready yet.)
Eleven agrees, but internally she’s all like: Mike, they already know, ur so fucking obvious, Lmao.
Except will tho, will low-key (read: high key) loves mike too, but neither of them have realized it yet because they’re both oblivious idiots
Everyone sees that they’re in love except for them and its so infuriating
Eleven has to endure mikes “pining phase” for MONTHS b4 she basically forces them into a room together (alone) to confess
She has to for her own sanity (but also because she wants her bffs to be happy.)
But seriously if mike didn’t say anything soon she would have to kill him and then herself (yikes, he was actually that bad lol)
Will went through a pining phase too (his started about a year b4 mike and eleven broke things off) although instead of pestering Lucas, Dustin, or Max about it he literally has 3 (three) spiral notebooks (college ruled, not that wide ruled bullshit) full of doodles of Mike with hearts around his head (and a fourth one in progress)
He was supposed to be using them for schoolwork, but he gets distracted a lot in class
No one (NO ONE) Is allowed to see those notebooks except for will himself
(Max, probably: Hey will can I borrow you’re notes, I lost mine? Will, slamming notebook #4 shut: NO! Max: *is visibly shook*)
poor Joyce has no idea why he keeps going through so many notebooks?
Anyway, the whole gang is together for a sleep over in mike’s basement (where else would they be?) and eleven takes mike aside and tells him that he has to tell will 2nite or she will fucking scream (she’s totally not kidding)
Mike: but what if he doesn’t like me back?? He’ll probably hate me if I tell him that……
Eleven: mike ur so stupid omg he fucking likes u back ok trust me
(She caught a glimpse of notebook #2 a while back when she and mike were nearing the end of their relationship, and she never told anyone. To this day, will doesn’t know that she saw it)
Mike: *skeptically* ok but even if that’s true I cant just say it in front of everyone
Eleven scoffs, drags mikes by the wrist over to will, drags will by the arm and basically throws them both into the bathroom and locks them in with her powers
Mike: ELEVEN!! OPEN THE DOOR!!! LET US OUT OF HERE OH MY GOD ARE YOU CRAZY?!?!?!?!?!
Eleven: nope :) (how does she do that this is a verbal conversation) not until you tell him.
Will, a very confused boy: huh? Tell me what? Mike what the fuck is going on?!?! What is she talking about??
Mike eventually confesses everything to will (except the pining phase, that was fucking embarrassing)
(Eleven tells him about it later, and mike tries to deny it, but will thinks its so cute???? Like so cute he wants to puke hearts??? But that might just be the butterflies in his stomach)
Mike tries to be smooth when he’s confessing to will but he’s a stuttering fucking mess
Will is so shooketh he doesn’t know what to do with himself so he just grabs mikes hand and says “me too” (hell deny it later, but he was on the verge of tears pretty much the whole time)
Mike smiles like the big goofy idiot he is, and eleven, seemingly satisfied opens the door
The gang claps and cheers, and mike and will are confused. Then they look down at their hands, with their fingers still intertwined and are more confused
Lucas: took you long enough
Mike and will: ????????????????
Dustin grabs them by the shoulders and pulls them into a group hugThey stay like that for at least 10 minutes, mike and will hugging each other in the middle, and everyone else crowding around them
Mike pecks will on the cheek and then whispers into his ear quietly: “I love you so fucking much, Will.”
Will Is basically a tomato at this point, a happy tomato, but a fucking tomato nonetheless. (Mike had never seen him so red)
He buries his face into mikes chest, and whispers back: “I love you, too, Mike” (mike blushes almost as red as will)
The others pretended not to notice this little exchange, but oh god did they notice, and it was the cutest fucking thing they’ve ever seen
After awhile they break apart, because its getting hot in mike’s basement
mike and will are left standing outside the bathroom door, still hugging each other. (Neither of them wanted to let go just yet)
Will holds on to mike like his life depends on it, and eventually he hears “Jesus will I can’t fucking breathe”
Will lets go immediately, and mike puts an arm around his shoulder and leads him to the couch
Every one is waiting for them, and no one can stop smiling (especially mike and will, god, those 2 are so fucking in love with each other its not even funny)
this took me way longer than I thought it would omg. I added a few things that weren’t in the original tags that got deleted but they fit in pretty nicely? idk lol I thought it made it that much cuter haha. This was originally supposed to be just a response to the post but I got a little carried away. Tbh I probably put more effort into writing this than I put into my actual homework that I get actual fucking grades on lmao (help). Speaking of which, I have homework that I have to go do now, hahaha. hope u like it lololol

ok because i couldn’t stop thinking about it the other day in my night class, he’s my stranger things/girl meets world au....i am like...in love with this so please.......hear me out
so riley, zay and smackle are like the trio of the au
riley = mike
zay = dustin
smackle = lucas
so basically farkle is like will and is the forth member of their group and he’s the one that goes missing at the beginning of the au, so get ready for the angst there
so riley, zay, smackle and farkle are all best friends who are small nerd children, so of course when farkle goes missing, riley zay and smackle all jUMP into action to try and find him
like in the show, farkle goes missing while they’re playing that game and the whole group is pretty distressed, but smackle takes it the hardest (the smarkle is lit y’all, LIT!!!)
(the town and adults aren’t really as involved in this au as they are on the show so the au is mainly about the kids reaction, they’re like 13/14 in this)
so basically after farkle goes missing they all jump into action to try and find him, and like go out late at night to look for him, and riley starts disappearing from her own house which worries her family (cory, topanga, josh - her older bro, and auggie - her younger bro)
OK SO ONE NIGHT riley is out by herself and stumbles across lucas in the woods after he’s run away from the weird testing facility that he was trapped in
so YES LUCAS = ELEVEN WHICH FUCKS ME UP
lucas has been kept in this facility by the “papa” character, who is actually his dad, kenneth, who’s a grade a jackass in this au btw and took lucas away from his mom when he was really little and basically is trying to brainwash him and mind control him to get what he wants and what not
lucas also has mind control powers, which comes in handy later
so basically when riley comes across lucas, he’s very skittish and doesn’t trust anyone or really want anyone to touch him, but riley is very calm with him
she brings him into her house and lets him stay in her basement and her parents a lil Skeptical about where all their food is going but riley is like “must take care of him, must protect him”
lucas also says he thinks he might know where farkle is, which definitely makes riley interested to know more about what he has to say
zay and smackle are both v v skeptical of lucas when riley introduces them to lucas, and lucas is v v nervous around them and like won’t answer any of their questions and kind of just sits there with a scared look on his face
zay is very much like “riley your parents are already skeptical about you being gone all night looking for farkle they’re gonna kill you when they find out about this, and then all hopes of us finding farkle will be gone”
so like he’s just concerned about riley getting into more trouble with her parents, and like he’s a little weirded out by lucas, but then he comes around to lucas being around and his curiosity of what lucas knows about farkle gets the best of him
smackle on the other hand doesn’t want to believe anything lucas says, and doesn’t think that they should trust him at all because, “hello riley you found him wandering around in the woods”
and smackle doesn’t really come around especially after lucas leads them to something that supposedly is supposed to help them find farkle, but just leads them to a dead end and smackle is pretty sure that lucas is just trying to get them all killed
smackle and riley have a big blow out about it at one point, that lucas overhears, and smackle is like “lucas just wants us all to disappear like farkle did!! he doesn’t care about farkle and he certainly doesn’t care about us!!!” smackle then kind of leaves them for a while because she’s so upset
riley, while understanding her friends concerns, comes to care deeply about lucas and trusts him, even if he says some weird stuff sometimes (when he does actually talk, which isn’t often) and they form a bond
it all comes to a head though when all of riley’s frustrations about not finding farkle and smackle leaving them boils over and she ends up snapping at lucas after he claims to be able to help them with something that again leads them to a dead end, after this lucas runs away, thinking that he’s not welcome with her or zay anymore
lucas really does want to help tho!!! he just doesn’t know exactly how to help them tho!!! he’s trying tho!!! oh boy is he trying!!!!
also zay thinks lucas’ mind control powers are super cool, smackle thinks it’s all a trick of the eye and doesn’t believe it and riley gets super concerned whenever lucas gets one of his nosebleeds
riley also tries to help lucas acclimate to normal life outside of the facility, and lucas vaguely opens up to her about what happened, but she’s deadass the only person he feels remotely comfortable around
after lucas runs away though, riley and zay continue to look for farkle, but they get cornered by some bullies from their school who try and hurt zay and riley stands up for him, but the bullies can tell that she’s bluffing and basically, they tell her if she jumps off a cliff, they’ll leave zay alone
AND OK ZAY DOESN’T WANT HER TO BUT SHE DOES BECAUSE SHE WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR HER FRIENDS
but lucas comes back and saves her!!! like he literally saves her life!!! he uses his powers to save her!!!!!
while he was gone, lucas realized that he needs to help them, he needs to make them believe him again, because they’re his friends and he needs his friends, that’s what they’ve all taught him
(also imagine the zay/riley/lucas hug that happens after lucas saves her, talk about a ot3 for the ages my friends)
after riley almost dies, smackle realizes that they all need to work together if they’re going to get farkle back, so she reconciles with riley and her and lucas start to warm up to each other again
THE GANG IS BACK TOGETHER
(also sidenote, maya is in this au and she’s josh’s gf and they have a lil side storyline that isn’t plotted out yet, but she’s in this au fam don’t worry)
then ALL THE SHIT HAPPENS, basically in the end lucas gets found by his father, who wants to take him again and riley basically stands up to his father and tells him that if he wants to take lucas he’s going to have to take her too because she’s not leaving lucas
rucas are hella protective of each other in this, just so y’all know if that wasn’t obvious
lucas however, isn’t gonna let himself be all brainwashed and controlled anymore, so he uses his powers on his dad and like throws him back into a wall and almost kills him, it’s beautiful and it’s lucas standing up for himself and riley is a lil scared but also hella proud and then zay is just like “dude that’s crazy”
BUT doing that kind of takes some of the life out of lucas and then he becomes really weak, especially bc at this same time he’s been entering the upside down looking for farkle and also they’re running away from the demogorgon, which is trying to take them
ultimately tho, lucas decides that he needs to sacrifice himself to save all of his friends because he’s the one that the demogorgon truly wants, so he kind of just walks into the monster and let’s himself be taken by it
riley is like screaming after him, zay is crying and smackle is just like in complete and total shock
riley tries to chase after him and be taken by the monster too, but zay holds her back and then she starts like Sobbing and falls to the ground
(there’s a lil running thing that happens after rucas reunites after their fight where they say “where you go, i go” to each other kind of like, we don’t leave each other, so she’s like whispering that to herself as she watches the demogorgon leave and take lucas with it)
BUT they get farkle back finally and they’re all reunited and it’s super cute and zay tells farkle all about lucas and is like “you two would have been such good friends” and farkle lowkey doesn’t believe he exists but he’s too happy to care bc he’s back with his friends!!!
when he’s the hospital, smackle holds his hand and is like “i’m really glad that you’re back” and lowkey has tears in her eyes and farkle is like “isadora you’re crying”
and she’s like “yes but i’m not upset, i promise!!” and wow, smarkle i’m fucking shook
also there’s a lil rilaya scene, where maya is like basically riley’s big sister bc of her and josh and maya kind of is like “i know about that lucas kid you were hiding in the basement, i’m sure your parents did too, you weren’t subtle about it” and then maya kind of comforts her
basically everything ends up OK for the gang, but riley still misses lucas and not long before all the shit happens, he gave her this necklace that he found when they were apart that he literally grabbed because it reminded him of her and she wears it everywhere after that
they probably find each other again at some point BUT IDK I HAVEN’T THOUGHT THAT FAR
basically, a lot of pain my dudes
i’m dead
