So you already discussed your hc for Luffy's ethnicity but what about the rest of the crew?
great question, i’ve been pondering about this for a while, it’s just when i saw luffy, i just knew he was my pasifika cousin 😭 i have reference sheets w all their hcs i’m working on to post later but let me go ahead n lay out rq how i would imagine the strawhats! i try to be as canon compliant as possible when assigning them.
usopp - afro-caribbean, specifically jamaican 🇯🇲
luffy - indigenous on both sides. so afro native samoan-brazilian. i stand by that forever. polynesian luffy real 🇼🇸🇧🇷. malagasy too. historically malagasy people are austronesian relatives as well anyway (malayo-polynesian) 🇲🇬
nami - thai-swedish. she’s ethnically fully thai, but when bellmere found her and nojiko, she took them to her hometown in sweden to be raised. im a firm believer in southeast asian nami 🇹🇭🇸🇪
zoro - afro japanese-caribbean. been a blasian zoro truther since day one. so japanese and haitian 🇯🇵🇭🇹
robin - double native as well !! native costa rican, the bribri people, and indigenous to eastern russia, yupik. she’s a challenge to figure out but i just know this is a native woman. 🇨🇷🇷🇺
jimbei - melanesian cousin fijian-indian !!! 🇫🇯🇮🇳
franky - italian american. only fueled by how water 7 is allegedly based on venice 🇮🇹🇺🇸 but also consider panamanian franky …🇵🇦 exactly. so he’s either panamanian or italian american to me
brook - afro-austrian ethiopian. an ethnically east african black man from austria(i also get new orleanian from him IF he were american)🇪🇹🇦🇹
chopper - if he were a human, indigenous canadian first nation (inuk) absolutely 🇨🇦
vivi - nubian and sudanese vivi on top !!! 🇪🇬 🇸🇩
sanji - french ……… 🇫🇷
i have headcanons for ace, sabo, dadan and some other characters too but this post is getting really long. to be continued !

Character Notes
Kiara’s middle name Afnane means “branches,” which I found fitting for a descendant of Rowan Thorn
Her surname Theron is an anagram of the original Thorne, which gained the additional vowel “e” over the course of the century following Cordonia’s formation and later became “Theron” after their house was exiled following their involvement in a revolt*
As the new heir of Castelsareillan, I decided Kiki should have a courtesy title to use and went with “Countess of Heartwood” to reference Bellmere
I chose the little owl as the specific species for House Theron’s sigil due to them being associated with Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and war (and thus found it an even more fitting nickname for Hakim to use)
The capital of Castelsareillan where Kiara was born, Sorbier, is French for “rowan”
Kiara’s enneagram is type Three, also known as “The Achiever”: the success-oriented, pragmatic type described as adaptive, excelling, driven, and image-conscious. She is a Two-Wing, who are generally more extroverted and charming than other type Threes, and her level 2 is the level of psychological capacity.
I head canon Hakim as being Moroccan through his father’s side, while Joëlle is ethnically of Mandinka descent
Credit to @lizzybeth1986 for Kiki’s face claim!
Many Cordonian noblewomen attend a finishing school their final year of gymnasium (Greek-equivalent to junior high) in preparation for their official court introduction, with Aurynn Academy being the premier
Of the ten languages Kiara knows, I included Vóreios Norse (an invented regional language of Lythikos) and Sabir (a pidgin language formerly used in the Mediterranean Basin which I head canon is still spoken); though she is fluent in all ten, they are listed in order from most familiar to least
Kiara’s tragus piercing is an old Castel tradition as the inner ear helps keep balance which is needed for archers; it’s now essentially considered a good luck charm
All of my character pages for TRR cast are of their status post main series, and like many others, I am a member of Team Hanara and imagine the two as having fallen in love over the course of TRR3
I also head canon that Kiara and Savannah were closer than canon indicates to flesh out both of their backstories
The only cousin named here (Aminata) is the one mentioned in canon whose wedding was missed
*Due to my lateness, please enjoy this extra bit of Cordonian history involving House Thorne becoming House Theron:
To avoid the Black Death, in 1344 C.E. all the kingdoms on the island of Pontios including Cordonia chose to close their borders. With exports severely reduced, this left the kingdom in need of becoming more self-sustaining, primarily in regard to necessities such as food. As such, a royal decree was passed the following year that all groves managed by hand would be replaced with apple orchards.
This included a major portion of Bellmere’s Heart Oak forest, and so commenced the Foresters’ Revolt. Unfortunately, despite the support of their noble house, the revolt was suppressed and Applewood was formed. The members of House Thorne were stripped of their titles and banished from the kingdom, and they ended up relocating to the northern forest south of the Blackspines. It would not be until two centuries later—due to their support of House Rys in the civil war—that the members would regain their status as nobility, now under the name House Theron.

Cos Ahmet
Our second visit from a guest speaker was done by Cos Ahmet, titled ‘A Journey of Body-Material Interventions’. This talk I found particularly interesting, as I am not a maker myself, I find it very interesting to listen to creatives talk about their work, processes and inspirations, and Cos was particularly passionate!
We learned about his MA in fine art at LJMU, from which he graduated in 2021, and now has a studio space in The Royal Standard which he shares with his collaborator Gary Finnigan. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the class trip to The Royal Standard which is a shame as I would really have loved to have a nosey at Ahmet’s space!
Cos’s current practice is sculpture, performance etc. His pieces often involve people interacting with the work or are made to imitate the human body. The work Instructions for a Body, 2019 was made up of fragments of piping to imitate a bodily product or system, Cos explained that he made the work to look almost like an archaeological dig. Although not the original inspiration, Cos took some inspiration from the artist Hans Bellmer, who grappled with the base conditions of the human body and the bodily fragments as a fetish object.
Tumblr media
This interest in the human body progressed into Ahmet beginning to question what it is to be a body now; leaning towards how to be a body in his own skin, this led him to begin looking at new materials to emulate this. To Disperse is to Cause, 2020, is made entirely of tape, as if the body has shed its own skin, leaving behind the remains. Ahmet explained that this linked back to ‘what it is to be a body now’. I found the concept really interesting and could see how it resonated with Cos.
Tumblr media
Cos moved on to talk about the choreographic side of his practice. This was a side of contemporary art that I hadn’t previously seen, and I found it quite thought provoking, the amount of thought and personality that goes into contemporary artwork sure is unique! Ahmet’s first choreographic piece is called Sensing the In-Between. this piece of work is made of tape and involves 2 shrouds that can be worn. Within this work, gestures of movement and touch are explored as the bodies meet in between. Ahmet described the work becoming a ‘pre-post performance’ referring to the performance in which he and one of his collaborators stand within the shrouds, walk towards each other, touch through the shrouds then take them off and lay them on the floor before walking away, ( excuse my terrible description of Ahmet’s very innovative performance piece). Cos explained that this work was made before the very first lockdown, he thinks that the noise in the media about covid going on in the background at the time, filtered through into his work. it is funny some of the things that can inspire art without the artist even realising until after it is made, I think this kind of subconsciousness is a big factor for inspiring contemporary art pieces.
Tumblr media
A year down the line, Ahmet began using other materials but hadn’t yet finished working with the tape, he wanted to expand and make the work much bigger into a choreographic space, but could also be an object at the same time, the piece A Meniscus (Between), 2021, was exactly that for Cos. it revolves around the meeting point from one skin to another but through a wall of tape, watching the video, it really made me think back to the lockdowns during covid, being able to see but not touch people, hold their hand, give your grandparents a hug etc.
I found it really quite moving!
Tumblr media
We looked at some of the work of Allan Kaprow, who Cos explained was a great influence for him. Kaprow would have a script of instructions for his works, which he liked to be followed to the letter by his performers who would interact with his work. This led Ahmet to begin to create a script of instructions for his works. this is where it clicked for me what a ‘choreographic project’ is, as the script of instructions reminded me of a script for a movie or a set of instructions for a dance etc. this is such an interesting concept for contemporary art, the level of planning that goes into Ahmet’s work is inspiring. Proposition (a duet), 2022, embodies this, the performance consists of a choreographic object, interacting with a human. The term ‘choreographic object’ was also a new one for me, so I gave it a quick google search to see what would come up, this ended up not being quick and took my down a deep hole of the definition of choreographic objects, until I found an essay written by American actor and choreographer William Forsythe. He explained that ‘A Choreographic Object is, by nature, open to a full range of unmediated perceptual instigations without having to prioritise any type of recipient. The objects instigate processes in the body that instrumentalise the body’s readiness to provide input" https://www.williamforsythe.com/essay.html I began here to understand the interest that Cos has in the way people interact with his works, and their eventual outcomes.
For this particular piece, the instructions were fairly loose, Ahmet let the person interacting with the object take their own opinion of what the instructions meant. This process of evolving, through his artwork, performance pieces and choreographic objects, is one of the main things that I found so interesting about Cos Ahmet’s talk. the evolution of his materials from tape to a survival blanket showed his interest in readily made materials, we could see how he grew in confidence over his performance pieces and use of choreographic objects over the years, up to his piece Transmitting, 2021.

tuesday - wednesday
labor rights violated today......could not take my break... wtf i thought my bosses #were #my #friends.
anyway, i finished my drawing thingy. i finished the actual drawing part and couldn't figure out what to write over it. but i came on something. against my better judgment, i'll post it. it is probably overtly sexual but it's a constant thing in any kind of art i make...so... whatever.
Tumblr media
i don't know what to say, other than i think all the points of reference are rather obvious, but i guess one thing i'm especially interested in right now is deformity as handled by hans bellmer, where it's more like deformity by capturing movement, the erotic gestures as mutant, that kind of idea. but i've always tried that, i've always been in his debt, so idk, it's just about needing to feel cute ultimately, i suppose.
i also drew tonight, to keep up with my every other day practice thing.
i like some of the ideas in it/ ways i drew faces. i think referencing photos is really useful for constructing heads better, it helps remind me of things like,, idk. it just helps me know what a human head is like. it's easy to forget that i suppose.
anyway, today i also did a song, so that makes 2 more for the mixing process, and thennn,,,,, more vocals.
and that's not too much... so we're getting #close.
with the tablet i stole from my gf, i'm definitely thinking about re-tracing the bugs, in other resolutions too, just cuz...idk, i know what's gonna upscale better now at least. so yeah, there's that on my mind, for the cover art.
anyway i gotta work out nowww.
worked out... fun.
i listened to the new cindy lee album in full today finally, really great stuff, the exact kind of music i like hearing, or like, one kind of thing i love to hear. i love a lot, so i really wanna hear a lot all the time.
but i digress, i love diamond jubilee, it might be a big deal this year, for me at least. no bad songs on it, a lovely way to spend 2 hours.
here's another bit of music i'm obsessed with, this song.
youtube
i love that it's got a cute garage rock vibe but it's still kind of got the white-belty thing going on w/ the paper thin guitars, or like, how white belt took the 60s affectations, this kind of bumps that up, the keyboards are so beautiful to me, i love those synths, it's just a perfect song to me.
apparently the lead guy of the intelligence was in this band:
youtube
reminds me of numbers a bit. fun stuff. i love the freakout section in this song with those way bleepy synths.
anyway i need to sleep now, we have to do errands tomorrow, so,
byebye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cos Ahmet
Dismantling of the Body
A Guest speaker from this module that grabbed my attention was Cos Ahmet, as his work is unconventional and esoteric in my opinion his performance art works, perfectly captures what people either adore or despite contemporary art for. Ahmet graduated from John Moore's with a master's in fine art and now has a studio at the Royal Standard, where the artist collaborates with other artists in residency, continually with Garry Finigan. Focusing on his solo work, Ahmet explores materials in all forms from textile work to more metaphorical pieces blurring the boundaries between material and body. In bodies of work such as from the bones to the skin Cos uses the idea of fractures and repairs in pipes as representations of the body- using domestic objects to paraphrase the body as pipe joints are labelled elbow joints the link is evident. It delves into concepts of dismembered and separated parts and the use of domestic and industrial elements. This was inspired by the work of Hans Bellmer who focused on mutilation of dolls and the dismantling of the body throughout the majority of his work, the surrealist portrayals of dolls/ women are unsettling and incomplete.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is it to be a body now?
Ahmet references Keira O’Riley, an Irish post-war artist employing visual, performance and feminist art through the 90’s up to the present. O’Riley ‘speculative reconfigurations of The Body in its most expanded sense, across multiple spaces, scales, and temporalities, often but not always, working with site, duration, and context as generative elements’ (http://www.kiraoreilly.com/statement) . The artist focuses on body politics and is now a crucial figure in biological arts and ecology in Helsinki. In response to the question she posed; what is it to be a body now? Ahmet created The Presence of Relics (2020) and To Disperse Is To Cause (2020) which inspired by O’Riley, using clear tape and film to create a phantom impression of itself and the concept of shedding his own skin. The Presence of Relics consists of the body and the box becoming one, as Ahmet shows bodies disappearing, morphing into a type of mass.

Acknowledging the Choreographic Object
The artist is well informed by art history, with the readings of Erin Manning and the works of William Forsythe, Alan Kaprow and Franz Erhad Walther shaping his art. Franz’s performance pieces from the 60’s were conceptual, with participation of people covered/ wearing a fabric, stretching miles between the people. This is referenced in Ahmet’s Sensing the Inbetween (2020) with the same name as Walther’s. Ahmet created the piece in a different material, replacing the fabric with clear film and box’s that performers were shrouded in. Within the context of social differences, Ahmet’s rendition is indicative of Covid as the two are stood socially distanced and in their respective bubbles. The artist also informed a separate piece of Ahmet's collection; as he was prompted to make an object he could disappear into. Cos achieved this through using the material of a survival blanket, in Curious Being (2021) he created a performance piece on Crosby beach during the first lockdown of Covid-19, adding an extra layer to the blanket for structure Ahmet was inside the object in order to ask the question when does the body stop being a body and become material?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mannings ideology of ‘Choreography happens everywhere, all the time’
Ahmet follows artists such as O’Riley by exploring the naked body in performance and video, as seen in the exhibition of Proposition (2022) at gallery Dodo in Brighton. The piece includes a nude man with translucent plastic or film over his face, while holding a clear box over his genitals. The artist intends to depict how a body interacts with unfamiliar objects, disappearing into and becoming a material. I see this as why Ahmet works with transparency, as it adds a juxtaposition of hiding the performer while being completely visible.
Tumblr media
Ahmet continues to divulge in merging material and body through Your Normal Surface Is Not Available where he covers himself in foil to immerse himself into the background of a survival blanket gradually. The video capturing the process of his face being covered increasingly, eventually hiding his eyes, then ends with the model beginning to take the mask off, although the audience does not see his entire face. This is done through performance in a video edited giving his face transparency, adding a factor of fantasy, and almost creating a liminal space within the video, with a soundtrack of eerie music composed by fellow artist Gary. Ahmet hails his inspiration from Bruce Nauman’s Art of Make-Up Series (1967-68).Nauman is an American artist who in this video is stood topless, applying white paint to himself until completely covered, the ritual is repeated with pink, green and black makeup displayed through four screens at once.

The definition of metamorphosis is a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one. Born in 1963, Frédéric Fontenoy has been working on his first series representation of the body, considering the photographic gesture as artistic in itself. From "Metamorphosis" in 1988, he plays with the reference to reality due to this medium, and readily relates to the distortions of Andre Kertesz and "The Anatomy of the image" of Hans Bellmer. His work is full of movement and abstract alien like shapes which contrasts his use of natural scenery. The nudity and unusual movement of the model references to the idea of nature and the human form being an ever changing thing that adapts to the world around them. In my opinion his work relates to the theme multiverse through these weird human shapes and nudity, in a parallel universe this could be the norm and perhaps the ‘human’ species in that universe adapted in a completely different way to humans on Earth. Fontenoy’s work helped to inspire my panorama photography task and my panorama edits in response to the theme multiverse. I took inspiration from his use of natural surroundings and tried to include elements on nature in my own work. But i also wanted to include houses and technology in my panoramas to represent human life as it is today.

The Doll
Hans Bellmer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hans Bellmer was a Surrealist artist and photographer from Germany. I wanted to research specifically his work surrounding the human body, femininity and mutilation. I was instantly drawn to his sculptures and his series of photographs entitled ‘The Doll’ or ‘La Poupée’. I find the way in which the body is presented quite disturbing. There is a strong connection to mutilation, abuse and violence captured within these photographs and the sculpture itself. Structurally, the shapes used seem quite fluid, like they are formed by gravity, weight or pressure. Furthermore, the smoothness of the shape and texture of the doll on the left makes it seem to posses this viscous appearance. You can see the surrealistic qualities within the work, especially the subversive and disruptive way that he presents the female body. Bellmer is showing this female body as something irrational, something that doesn’t fully make sense or goes against how we as a societal collective want to view our or others bodies. I see Julia Kristeva’s idea of Abjection captured within Bellmer’s work. Its hard not to see this doll as some type of corpse or reference to a corpse. As well as this obvious connection to death, I can also see the connection to mutilation. While viewing these photographs, I do think about photographs taken during World War 2 both on the battlefield and in the concentration camps. I think about injured soldiers on stretchers, hospitals and those who bodies were left behind. Dismemberment of the body instantly has a strong impact as it reminds me off my own physical body, morality and all the horrendous injuries and events that could possibly happen to me. Bellmer often photographed ‘The Doll’ wearing young girls’ little white socks and the black patent leather shoes. Incorporating children’s clothing, especially these items that are widely considered connected to school, childhood and innocence is very bold and impactful. Maybe this is due to the disturbing link of these items to the fetishisation and abuse of these young school children that is unfortunately always been a reality in our own society throughout time. Maybe Bellmer is trying to present this idea of abuse as something inconceivable, unthinkable and something that he cant, or the audience can’t make full sense of.  Abuse and more specifically sexual abuse are concepts that straight away make people feel very uncomfortable, similarly to the uncomfortable sensation of viewing these photographs. There is a sexual element to some of these photographs while others do feel very sexless. There’s definitely a confrontation between Bellmer presenting the sex and sexuality of the female body and Bellmer photographing the female body through an unforgiving and asexual lens. I lean towards the idea of Bellmer emphasising the breasts and genitals to create an uncomfortableness, presenting the obscene and pornographic but in a confronting rather than over sexualised way. Corruption of innocence and the corruption of this doll’s body is used in a way that makes the viewer think about their own corruption and sexual thoughts when faced with these images.

Illusion - Research
Pre-Production
Research into Surrealism –
- At what time did Surrealism begin?
Surrealism originated in the late 1910s and early ’20s as a literary movement that experimented with a new mode of expression, known as automatic writing, or automatism, which sought to release the unbridled imagination of the subconscious.
- What does it mean?
Surrealism is a cultural movement expressed through art, literature, and even politics.
Surrealism also embraces the psychoanalytical idea of unconscious desires; things we want but don't know that we want. The Surrealism movement focuses on these ideas of chaos and unconscious desires to dig deep into the subconscious to find inspiration for political and artistic expression.

– What is The Uncanny?
‘The uncanny” refers to imagery that is, for the most part, familiar. Such imagery becomes “uncanny” when featuring subtle, uncomfortable differences to what we would otherwise perceive as normal. The sense of familiarity followed by the feeling of something being ever so slightly off can evoke feelings of fear and unease.
This phenomenon is most obvious when viewing imagery depicting humans. The brain recognises faces or the human form in the work; this is the familiar. We become uncomfortable when confronted with inconsistencies that cause the people depicted to come across as less human. Things like emotionless eyes and unnatural proportions can throw us off and make the work unpleasant or even frightening to look at.
- When did it begin?
In 1906 Ernst Jentsch set out the concept of the uncanny which was later elaborated on by Sigmund Freud in 1919.
- Who are some of the most well-known artists?
