Behind the Scenes of The Star Beast - Part One

Excerpt from Benjamin Cook's Star Beast Set Visit in DWM 597:

There’s a buzz in the air in Camden Town tonight as the market vendors shut up shop. Businessmen wait on the bridge by the lock. Students rush from the Starbucks, buskers busk. Tourists jostle for a selfie spot, next to the bronze statue of Amy. At the northernmost point of Camden High Street, a man with a mohawk folds away his cardboard placard (‘HELP A PUNK TO GET DRUNK’) and heads across the road to buy a Red Bull from the 24/7. Three men in North Face jackets, one on a stepladder, yank a tarpaulin sheet off a police box. Security guards change shifts. On Gin Alley, people are still queuing for meat and noodles. A woman in a Kermit tee leaves Oddballs carrying a unicycle. Rose Noble buys a bagful of eyes. Outside Cyberdog, two silver robots, three times the height of the average human, stand vigil. A different crowd is gathered here too, dripping in scarves, bowties, and pinstripes. A dog barks. A neon sign flickers. David Tennant arrives. Some people cheer. Others clap. A boy in a beanie hat drops his falafel. An ambulance siren wails in the distance. Two-hundred phones are held aloft. “What a rock star,” says Doctor Who’s executive producer, Phil Collinson. “I still can’t quite believe David is back on the Doctor Who set.” Neither can he. “It’s mental,” says David, grinning. “We’ve got three more months of this.” It’s mid-May 2022, and he’s donned the vintage Converse once more to play the Doctor, alongside Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, in three hour-long 60th Anniversary Specials. They began filming in Cardiff last week. A few days ago, he recorded his half of the regeneration from Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.

You can always tell when I've been reading The Writer's Tale. Or you can if you're one of my Patreon supporters, I suppose. I always end up posting something about writing Jump Leads. Or, in this case, not writing it.

I really envy the exchange Benjamin Cook and RTD had, writing series 4 and the gap year specials. Moreso RTD than Cook - Russell had someone to talk through his process with, and to rubber duck his ideas to. Or at. Or both! I've tried to recreate that energy once or twice with friends, and I don't think they've ever understood the assignment.

102. The Writer’s Tale: The Final Chapter, by Russell T Davies and Benjamin Cook

Owned?: Yes Page count: 693 My summary: A series of emails between Benjamin Cook and Russell T Davies in 2008 and 9, during the creation of Doctor Who series 4 and the specials. My rating: 5/5 My commentary:

I love this book. I love it so much. Getting a behind the scenes view on how Doctor Who is made, particularly the Doctor Who of 2008, one of my favourite eras of New Who? Hell yeah. Look, I’m an RTD fan, I think his writing is really interesting, and in particular his Doctor Who run contained some of my favourite Doctor Who stories. This is such a good look at his psyche, his life and his writing process while this series was in creation, and some of the trials that go into it.

RTD is such an interesting guy. Love him or hate him, the man’s got style. We see a lot of his ups and downs in this book, him being a bastard and being sweet, loving his episodes and hating him. And it’s so cool to see creative decisions being made right before your eyes! In these emails, RTD decides to present his last story as two specials, decides to have Wilf be the instigator of the Tenth Doctor’s demise, rewrites an ending based on Benjamin Cook’s feedback. (He starts the emails calling himself Invisible Ben, and ends up as Visible Ben.) He’s funny, he’s engaging, and we see a lot of the way his mind works, particularly in the 4am emails when he’s up too late writing and ridiculously emotional. And it’s not all Doctor Who. Sometimes they talk about Mika, or Skins.

If you’re interested in this era of Who, or in this kind of writing, I’d definitely tell you to check this out. It’s such a cool book.

I must have the best job in the world. Billie Piper is in the shower, and I’m being paid to watch.  Okay, she’s not in an actual shower. She’s in a hospital lift. But she’s still getting wet.  In fact, she’s soaked through and through. Actually, it’s not a real hospital. Or a real lift. It’s a cramped set in a Newport studio. But I don’t care. It’s real water. And I’m not actually getting paid. Not in legal tender. But that’s a private matter between me and my employers. There. Breathe. Yes. Anyway. Billie. “I don’t mind,” she says, mascara running down her cheeks, “I prefer it cold.” “So says Billie Piper,” chuckles James Hawes, the director.  “Write that down, please, Doctor Who Magazine!” David Tennant looks on. He’s already filmed his shower scenes, and he’s here to lend Billie some moral support. Hang on, he isn’t. He’s watching her get drenched, and filming it on his camcorder. The camcorder is shaking, because he can’t stop laughing. At one point, he actually shouts out, “Go, Billie, go!” I swear.

A trait we don't talk nearly enough about with Quark is that he's a very good cook. It's mentioned all the time- he makes Kai Winn a "Kai Winn" which is a dessert he invented, when someone comes to the station who wants to kill him his instinct is to cook them an elaborate meal, he was a cook before he got Quark's.

Idk- I just really think its a lost piece of his characterization that he's a good cook across a huge variety of different alien preferences.

But what I'm REALLY saying is that we deserved a Sisko v Quark cook-off B plot. I'm forever robbed.
