Despite the fact that Ontario put a stop to birth alerts in 2020, Quebec child welfare agencies continued to send hundreds of the controversial notifications — which can be used to threaten to or actually seize newborns from their mothers — to Ottawa's largest hospital.

According to internal hospital data obtained by CBC News, The Ottawa Hospital received 298 birth alerts from October 2020 onward. That was when the province ended the practice, saying the alerts disproportionately affect Indigenous and other racialized mothers.

All the alerts issued after 2020 came from Quebec and "were not acted upon," the hospital said.

But Cora McGuire-Cyrette, CEO of the Ontario Native Women's Association, said it's "disheartening to see these numbers."

Birth alerts are notifications issued by child welfare agencies to local hospitals about pregnant people who they deemed "high-risk." In turn, health-care providers are required to alert welfare authorities when the subject comes to seek medical care or deliver their baby.

The alerts often include directions to take additional action — such as medical testing on the parent or baby, or to prevent the baby from leaving the hospital with the parent. It can lead to newborns being taken away from their parents for days, months or even years.

"They're problematic in the sense that unfortunately they were most often deployed against Indigenous, racialized and disabled parents," said lawyer Tina Yang with Waddell Phillips PC in Toronto. She is helping lead a proposed class-action lawsuit against several Ontario children's aid societies and the province.

Ontario ended the controversial practice in 2020, while several other provinces and territories stopped between 2019 into late last year. Quebec is the only remaining province to practise birth alerts.

"It's unconstitutional and illegal," said Yang.

Often, birth alerts are issued without letting the pregnant person know and without evidence of real risk, according to Yang.

so my sisters third accidental pregnancy of this year. shes still couch hopping bc she flaked last minute on getting that apartment with me. shes planning on keeping it despite being on ketamine and a dozen other drugs. and again. having nohouse. a job that pays way less than minimum wage (less than half of minimum wage even with tips).

I'm always happy to get asks about Aurora! I'm just not very good about responding to them -pointedly looks away from the ask about her relationship with Lucien that's been sitting in my inbox for months-

Your question is also timely because Aurora's birthday is in about a month!

As a human, Aurora hated her birthday because her mother died giving birth to her, and she therefore blamed herself (I'm sure that the Count did as well). Aurora then spent her next hundred birthdays believing herself to be Rebekah. I think "hating" her birthday is something that helped Aurora distinguish "Aurora" from "Rebekah." I also think at that point it was difficult for her to know exactly when her birthday was, and to this day, Aurora does not know exactly when her birthday is except in very specific modern human verses where Aurora would absolutely be a basic birthday month type of princess. Honestly, it's a running joke on my blog at this point that if someone asks Aurora how old she is/when her birthday is, she just directs them to Tristan who does, in fact, know exactly when Aurora's birthday is. In verses with Lex, Tristan spoils Aurora excessively so she that is usually her favorite part of her birthday.

I tweaked the design of Ieeha’s adoptive dad, Yvelont... sir...

(Yvelont is head of the minor noble house Verral of Ishgard, and lost his wife, children and mobility during the Dragonsong War. He was asked one day to house a “prodigous but difficult youth” who had moved regularly between numerous families his entire childhood without stability, to which he agreed.

While the youth was reluctant to familiarize himself at first, he gradually came to consider Yvelont a sort of father figure, especially after being gifted an entirely new wardrobe and was accepted as a son. Ieeha was named sole heir of the Verral estate and fortune, 3 years after he first moved in and on his 20th birthday.)
