I just discovered your posts about AEIWAM and I'm already in love. I've loved Unohana for years and your post talking about her backstory in your fic is just.... /chef's kiss. (also I had no idea non-ADHD people don't get the euphoria of meeting someone who Gets It, this explains a lot). I'm so excited by everything I've seen so far!
Cool because I added a lot more because I thought Unohana needed a Terrible Science Buddy and also Minazuki would be cool if it was a one of a pair of swords that are medications on how healing requires both creation and destruction- Minazuki's ray form heals by creating- she can replenish lost blood or grow new bones and tissues, but she can't destroy an infectious pathogen or pull out shrapnel. Minazuki's other form is... well, it's blood that digests an opponent if they don't dodge good enough. I think that Unohana actually needs to use both forms for them to work- the material consumed/destroyed by the blood form is where Minazuki gets the raw materials and energy for the healing ray form.
So I made up Sakukoji, her sister sword whose ray form destroys foreign and alien bodie within the body of a patient or remove excesses produced by the body, like cancer or excess calcification, but can't replace lost blood or close wounds like minazuki can. Sakukoji's second form looks more like an enormous fungal body that can change and add to the form of any living thing it touches. Sakukoji needs her second form to release all the toxins and excess matter she's built up.
The sisters are yin and yang to each other, each a force of creation or destruction, but with an element of the other as well, and both ultimately in service of the third force- preservation.
Sakukoji's weirlder is Tama Nikyu, a victim of an extremely aggravated act of plagarism. Here's an illustration of their froms:
Tumblr media
(please embiggen for details)
I made Minazuki look a bit more like a Short-tailed River Stingray because they're awesome, and Sakukoji looks like a filter-feeding manta because she kind of is.
Also. Gooey :)

Now what if Tôshirô had brown eyes and brown hair before he died in the human world?

Question, is the thing about Yosuke dying his hair canon? Because I saw a couple times people say Yosuke, Futaba and once even Chie all have dyed hair. And. If it's true it's kinda hilarious because.
Blue hair.
Naoto, Yusuke, maybe Mishima, P3 male protagonist, Fuuka, that one goth guy in P2, all have blue hair.
And sure, goth guy and protag Could have dyed their hair, even if protag is unlikely because the dialogue in PQ when he talks about uncovering his eye somewhat implies he is too lazy to style his hair and just lets it do whatever.
Even Fuuka might have dyed hers but she just doesn't give off the Vibe.
But Naoto? Yusuke? Naoto would Not Have Risked walking into the police station with dyed hair in a thousand years, much less such an unnatural color. And Yusuke's hair color is consistent through the story even though Madarame would have never wasted money on hair products for him so the color is most likely natural.
Mishima had probably a lot more to worry about than his hair.
You could say it's just a stand-in for black hair but Persona has characters with black hair(making it kinda pointless to replace it with blue) and Fuuka's is so aquamarine it looks green.
So. This would mean that blue is. A natural hair color in the Persona universe.
You could argue that people with lighter hair colors are rare in Japan because it's a whole Thing with Ann, and Ryuji does dye his, but Haru and Akechi have very much brown hair and they too seem super unlikely to dye it.
It would make sense for Yosuke to dye his hair, it sounds like something he would do, but I just find it really funny that of all the colors, he choose Brown.
Mitsuru and P3 FeMC have bright red hair, Akihiko and Souji have white/silver, a bunch of people have blue hair, and the characters that do dye it have... Brown and Blond.
Ah, yes, the Persona Universe. Where imagination comes true, butterflies are gods, TVs are portals to another dimension, the day is 25 hours long to some people, a random app you didn't download on your phone gives you the power to kill or brainwash anyone you know the name of, and blue is a natural hair color.
This stopped being about Yosuke 2 sentences in, I just wanted to share the blue hair thing with someone.
Oh wow thank you for sharing your blue hair thoughts as a huge fan of funky anime hair colours it's nice to see a break down
I swear I thought Yosuke dyed his hair but the more I think about it/try to look for evidence I think it's just a thing that I saw in a fic. I honestly have no idea anymore. To be fair though, it may be the case that he dyed it from one funky anime hair colour to another funky anime hair colour. Blond Yosuke, anyone?
EDIT: ACTUALLY thanks to the friendly reminders in notes I've just remembered
Tumblr media
Yes it is indeed true yosuke DOES dye his hair

Shihouin[四楓院] Chika[千日]
Shi[四]: "4"
Hou[楓]: "Maple(tree)"
In[院]: "Temple/House(of governmetn)/Institution"
Chi[千]: "1,000"
Ka[日]: "(The)Sun"/"Day"
Given the naming pattern with Yoruichi and Yuushirou reading "Night 1" and "Night 4 Son", it would follow that Chika's name here reads as "1000 Days" or "1000th Day" A curious notion when the Shihouin crest has a moon on it, which was obviously where the night motif in the later heirs came from. Is Chika a blacksheep of the family for not having a night name? Or did the Shihouin change their motif at some point from day/sun to night/moon?
And very noticeably he's wearing what looks like a chinese style of lamellar belt(it's hard to say when there isn't an accompanying suit of armor to go with it) but it evokes to me a lot of Ming dynasty period pieces(or alternatively very anime-ass Romance of the Three Kingdoms designs) and incidentally Journey To The West was written in the Ming Dynasty, and combined with his complexion and his distinctive Xiangyun[祥云]:"auspicious clouds" scarf (and of course my ongoing crackpot theory about there being an unspoken theme of pre-Japanese Buddhism underlying the foundation of Soul Society) makes me think he's specifically Indian but having travelled East across China(or whatever the Soul Society equivalents are)

Izuhara[嚴原] Kinroku[金勒]
Izu[嚴]: "Strict/Stern"
Hara[原]: "Plain/Field/Wilderness"
Kin[金]: "Gold"
Roku[勒]: "Bit/Bridle(like a horse's)"
Makes him sound like a wild stallion type who was only tamed by being bribed with wealth and luxury. At first glance I had pegged him for a cold corporate or medical type, but looking at him again he has a certain yakuza look about him too. Less an overt thug and more a grifter, a penny pincher, a coldblooded loan shark type, and this name seems to vibe with that. It's hard to tell but it looks like he has the archetypal yakuza/laborer bellywarmer like Tetsuzaemon did too.
Shijima[志島] Chikiri[知霧]
Shi[志]: "Will/Resolution/Ambition"
Jima[島]: "Island"
Chi[知]: "Wisdom/jnana"
Kiri[霧]: "Mist/Fog/Haze"
Same root word Shi[志] as in the Shiba family and in Okikiba Genshiro's given name. Weird that all three of these are associated with the water; waves/ripples, islands, and distant waters.
The given name is fun because it seems to describe him as wise but in a hazy way, his wisdom is obscured or unclear; whether that means it's unclear to others, or even to him isn't clear. Either one seems to fit his kind of disheveled appearance.
Now that we can see him properly, he kind of reminds me of Wonderweiss.

Obana[尾花] Danjirou[彈児郎]
O[尾]: "Tail"
Bana[花]: "flower"
Dan[彈]: "Bullet/Pellet/(musket)Ball"
Ji[児]: "newborn baby"
Rou[郎]: "son"
On the one hand the compound [尾花] appears to refer to "(ear of) Japanese pampas grass" which is also known as the Chinese Silver Grass. But it's also part of the compound [鸟尾花] refering to the Crossandra infundibuliformis, the Firecracker Flower. And also [鸢尾花] referring to irises in general. Since, as the 5th division captain, he's not the one with an iris insignia, I'm going to go with the silver grass reference. It does evoke a certain rugged and pastoral landscape that seems to suit the rustic almost hick-ish vibe he has going on.
As for Bullet baby.... I have no idea what to make of it...
Saitou[齊藤] Furofushi[不老不死]
[齊]: "...-Like/as if..."
[藤]: "Wisteria"
[不老]: "No grow old"
[不死]: "No die"
"Wisteria-like" has obvious evocations in her hair color and pigtails. The given name all together is actually a phrase meaning "immortality/perpetual youth." Pretty straight forward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shigyou[執行] Nobutsuna[乃武綱]
Shigyou[執行]: "execution/enforcment"/"executive/executor"*
No[乃]: "<possessive indicator>"
Bu[武]: "Military/Martial"
Tsuna[綱]: "Cord/Rope"
*can also refer to a "lead monk performing various tasks in a (buddhist)temple" although his overall appearance is anything but monk-like; certainly there are other captains here that would suit that reading better. So, the "rope or military enforcement."
(The random 3rd division guy with the "Winter Whistle" sword was named Taketsuna[武綱])
Katoribatsu[鹿取抜] Unsai[雲齋]
Ka[鹿]: "Deer"
Toribatsu[取抜]: "Drain/Extract"
Un'[雲]: "Cloud"
Sai[齋]: "<indicates a penname>"
Ok, first of all... "Deer Extraction"??? And then her given name is either "Penname: Cloud" or if taken together [雲齋]: "cotten drill" as in the twill weave fabric used for things like khakis?? But that feels like a weird way to go. She is quite bookish looking (i mean... as if she can avoid it in the proximity of Nanao and Risa...) so perhaps she's an author on the side? Hence the penname. But as for the deer collecting... it feels like a weird way to phrase it, but I'm assume it's trying to conjure a disney princess-like scene of her attracting deer to her to show her purity and trustworthiness? Maybe???
Also she has a distinctive, Zhōngguó jié[中國結]: "Chinese knot" ornament at the end of her naginata(?) which wasn't shown in the poster. Although the coloration on this sheet is oddly gold rather than the more typical red. What is probably the most common and recognizable design is the Pán zhǎng jié[盤長結], sometimes called an "endless knot" or "eternal knot" and is used to represent various Buddhist virtues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kumoi[久面井] Entetsu[煙鐵]
Ku[久]: "A long time"
Mo[面]: "Face/Mask/Surface"
I[井]: "Well(water source/hole in the ground)"
En'[煙]: "Smoke"
Tetsu[鐵]: "Iron"
He sounds and looks very much like a jailer/torturer, not unlike some vibes Urahara's backstory gave off. Kumoi's zanpakuou is also a Tiěbiān[鐵鞭], a sectioned iron rod, part of a broader family of weapons/tools all called "iron whips."
Interestingly it's the same type of weapon Sui-feng's bankai, Jakuhou Raikouben[雀蜂雷公鞭], is named after.
Outokawa[王途川] Furuoki[雨緒紀]
Ou[王]: "King"
To[途]: "Road/Way"
Kawa[川]: "River"
Furu[雨]: "Rain"
O[緒]: "Cord/String(of an instrument)"
Ki[紀]: "Era/Period(of time)" or "Rule/(Written)Record"
"King's Way River" is a very pompous sounding family name... Interestingly the name Furuoki uses the kanji [雨] for rain, but is pronounced here like furu[降る] which is the verb for "to fall" referring specifically to rain or snow. The "Era of Rain(fall) String." It might be a stretch but I want to interpret that as the lines of rain falling being equated to the string of an instrument, and by proxy comparing the sound of rain fall as music.
But alternatively it could be another play into Kubo's on-again-off-again rain symbolism. Sometimes it's Ichigo's depression, sometimes it's Uryuu's legacy as the last Quincy, sometimes it's Orihime making confusing statements about joining earth and heaven, in direct contradiction to her Tanabata namesake... Is it "The Rule of Rainfall" as in the downpour comes eventually no matter how you run from it? Or as in, heaven and earth are joined eventually if your just wait? Or as in heavens will be clouded over and separated eventually? Or as in, relief comes eventually and even the worst drought can't last forever?

Zenjou[善定] Jiuhin[寺有嬪]
Zen'[善]:"Virtue/Goodness/Good deeds
Jou[定]: "certainty/reality/samadhi"
Ji[寺]: "temple"
U[有]: "bhava/becoming/existence"
Hin'[嬪]: "court lady/virtuous woman/concubine"
So I can't quite tell if Kubo's just leaning into the on'yomi here, or if he's specifically aiming for a Chinese reading. I want to say On'yomi, but it is fairly close to the Chinese reading Shàndìng[善定] Sìyǒupín[寺有嬪] it's just the dìng[定] vs jou[定] throwing a wrench in it. And I'm hung up on Jiuhin's name sounding Chinese because with the mandarin style collared shirt and the fact that he has... for some reason two... queue... it all points to a distinctly Chinese influence in the design.
Arguably the face paint could also be pulled erroneously from the brooder aesthetic of Chinese opera --as in maybe Kubo was going for a Chinese opera inspired look, but what's here definitely isn't accurate to the style-- but it feels very in line with Kubo's own funky sensibilities either way.
Sakahone[逆骨] Saizou[才藏]
Saka[逆]: "Reverse"
Hone[骨]: "Bone"
Sai[才]:"Talent/Ability"
Zou[藏]: "Hidden"
....the idea that this decrepit old man is named "Reverse Bones" as if he's like that because his bones are just "wrong" is for some reason hilarious and horrifying to me. "Hidden Talent" seems self-explanatory given he looks like he should barely be able to move, let alone fight or kill a person.

I'm really into my new series!
I love writing it so much I want to expand on it even more than Sunflowers And Cherry Blossoms. (not abandoned... Just haven't gotten around to decide what to write next.)
The timelines of SACB and MDHYE won't match, of course, and I'm thinking of augmenting the Abarai Clan. — Which I think it's a great idea to imagine Byakuya straight up creating a new Clan within the Kuchiki Retainer Clans, since the new Elder Council still doesn't accept Rukia as the heir because she's not a blood heir... So Byakuya says "Fuck it", creates a new Clan and gives them wealth and rights above and beyond the rest of the retainer Clans. — My logic is, since Rukia and Renji named their first daughter Ichika to honour Ichigo, (though the meaning is tied more with his Kanji nickname than his Kanji actual name) a couple of years down the line, they'd have a second daughter and called her Byakuren, after Byakuya.
Tumblr media
It takes the same Kanji radical as Byakuya's name (白) adding the Kanji for Lotus (蓮), keeping with the theme of flowers, fruits and tress, signifying the rebirth, the blooming of a branch that seemed doomed to die...

I dropped watching Bleach 15+ years ago but decided to give it a try again. How nostalgic! (✽´w`✽)
I just had to draw my absolute favorite character Hanatarou;;;;;;;;;;; and an added bonus with Murata from Kimetsu no Yaiba because of the similarities and same voice actor.....

Chapter 065
I love this panel, because whenever I read the English translation my first instinct is to read it as Ichimaru and Zaraki not having adjutants at all, period, like that’s some kind of burn and as though Byakuya hasn’t had his current VC for a whole whopping paltry 2 months. I mean, that’s not how it’s supposed to be read, because of course they do have VCs, just not present with them currently. But does that change how I read it every single time? NO.
Beyond that, though, it’s just a fascinating panel. My personal translation of Byakuya’s line is:
Two captain-class shinigami out together, both without their adjutants. // What do you want with me?
Byakuya suggests that this is an unusual occurrence--for captains to be together? for captains to be without their VC? Probably not the latter, since it’s not as though Byakuya expects Renji to be attached to him. Surely it’s the combination of two captains in the same place at the same time (why?) and without their VCs, which I feel like the grammar supports. Byakuya lines these two ideas up to parallel each other, which I wanted to preserve that in my translation. Since the divisions heretofore operate so autonomously, any time more than one captain is in a place, it’s likely a formal occasion. He’s remarking upon the fact that not only are Ichimaru and Zaraki hanging out (and tag teaming him), especially since they haven’t brought the appropriate accoutrements (VCs), if this meeting of three captains was to be made reasonable.
So Byakuya’s like, clearly this is not a formal inquiry, so why are you here and why are you talking to me? I simp for arcane Gotei niceties/social expectations, so this FEEDS me.
Especially since in context, this is Byakuya’s greeting to these two, after they essentially come up behind him and accost with with metacommentary on his life:
Tumblr media
Such composure, 6th Captain-san! // Splendid, splendid!
Ichimaru is both bubbles, even though they look like they’re being spoken by different people--different fonts (corresponding with different levels of formality), and in this case also different colors: The light blue bubble is normal (Kansai) speech, and then Ichimaru opts for the honorific form in the indigo bubble. He switches registers (and into a super serif font lol), which I think Byakuya reacts to more than the comment about his composure.
Because it’s laying it on a little thick, considering Ichimaru also continues, Your sister is going to die, yet that coolheadedness prevails. // Fittingly executed, 6th Captain-san. The perfect reflection of a shinigami!
Tumblr media
This isn’t captured in my translation, so maybe there are better ways to do this, but the phrase さすが (sasuga) appears as ザッスが, which I read as vocal emphasis. Such praise big wow
Another thing that isn’t captured that I wish were is that the words Ichimaru uses for “composure” and “coolheadedness” both begin with 冷 (rei), for coldness, and I like that repetition.
I just feel like there’s interpersonal madness going on here. Is it respectful? Is it the exact opposite of respectful? Does every other conversation in Soul Society devolve into threat of imminent violence even before “wartime exceptions” are granted?
Byakuya then assures Ichimaru and Zaraki that none of this concerns them.
Tumblr media
The idea of Byakuya referring to any captain, much less freakin’ Ichimaru and Zaraki, as his “brothers” absolutely cracks me up, but also... he kind of does? He uses the phrase 兄等 (keira) as a pronoun, which I’ve never seen before. 兄 (ani) does usually mean brother, and 等 (ra) is a grouping/pluralizing word. The dictionary says that it can be used as a masculine, respectful “you” and is homophonous with 卿, another archaic respectful “you.” Of course, Byakuya doesn’t choose 卿 but 兄, which seems to suggest he does understand Ichimaru and Zaraki to be close colleagues who, at least, are not strangers, with some suggestion of the fraternal? Like, this is a language choice he made.
The rest of the sentence isn’t overly formal--just speech between colleagues, though still in high contrast to Zaraki’s drawl--but Byakuya does use a lot of kanji for words that aren’t always written in kanji in manga, which makes his bubbles feel fancy. So re: his choice of address, it’s hard for me to say if he’s just being well-bred or if Byakuya actually does regard Ichimaru and Zaraki as...well, known entities, I guess I would say. Of course, he and Zaraki then get into a bitching match about social class and seem wont to draw blades, had Ichimaru not tied Zaraki up and run away. Idk, I went into some epic rabbitholes [x x x x] with this one, and as usual all this is beyond my ken. Blah blah usual disclaimer that I do not speak Japanese, etc.
It was really fun, though! And I’m kind of into the fact that this whole conversation is about Ichimaru’s commentary on Byakuya’s relationship with his sister, but also about what fraternity does or doesn’t even mean within the Gotei. Clearly the Gotei 13 is not a “we’re like a family!” workplace, lol, but the dance of relationalities between all these characters is my favorite thing in the whole world.
