During the pandemic, I was in a music video for a metal song called "Masochist" by Bonestripper. It was about a group of people in a zoom meeting confessing their sins to a creepy pastor, and things take an...interesting turn.

In the 80s it seemed that we'd reached the golden age of set design. Think back on the Goonies, The Lost Boys, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, The Blues Brothers. It's great set design all the way down. Nothing but Trouble joins the ranks of films with fantastic set design, simultaneously proving that a movie can look good without being any good.
The movie itself has an interesting backstory, its genesis couched in a showing of Hellraiser attended by Dan Aykroyd in which he noted that the teens were laughing at the horror film the entire way through. The result was his decision to create a horror comedy starring himself, John Candy, Chevy Chase, and Demi Moore. And it isn't very good.
Chevy Chase, due to his very nature as a person, plays a great heel onscreen. This is a detriment to most films in which you're supposed to see him as a sympathetic character who doesn't need to be sent into the Bonestripper Machine. Thusly, the film doesn't get off to a good start and certainly doesn't get much better. The plot is flimsy, we don't care about the characters, and the whole film isn't for children and yet is neither gross enough nor crass enough for adult audiences.
Yet the film was also a lot of fun. John Candy is double cast as both the villiage cop and the local Judge's daughter. Dan Aykroyd wears grotesque old age prosthetics. Digital Underground makes an appearance, marking the first time Tupac would appear in a major motion picture. There are certainly lines and gags to laugh at. It's bad, and certainly not good, but I find it uniquely enjoyable. This too is what some would call "camp."
It's also a movie in which Demi Moore kisses Chevy Chase, something no one wants to see. Do with that information what you will.

I swear if I ever have a giant mecha it’s gonna be all trashy and loaded with metal grinders and stereo speakers and basically it’s going to be the Mr. Bonestripper from the movie Nothing but Trouble but it would be for grinding expensive mechas in duels so it’s extra humiliating.
Yes the song Bonestripper by the Damn Yankees would be my battle theme.

more assorted thoughts about nothing but trouble
I'm usually not too fond of grossout-based humor but since I went in expecting it, it wasn't so bad... having said that, there were a few moments where I was pretty disgusted. but that was the intended reaction so
wasn't quite sure how to feel about demi moore's character, she seems a bit more reasonable and sympathetic than the other yuppies but she does still seem slightly egotistical (though nowhere near her traveling companions)
it seems like such a shame to only use mr bonestripper in two short scenes since it's such a fun set piece, but I might be biased due to my love of dark carnivals/ themed amusement
I know the point of eldona is intended as "hey this actor is in drag and that's inherently funny". I know that. but honestly she was my favorite character in the movie. john candy does a really good job conveying her emotions using facial/body language alone
I would've liked to see more of the town of valkenvania! apparently a bit more of the plot was supposed to take place there and I wonder what would have happened

Death for running a stop sign? This week, Peaches and Michael are taking a trip to Valkenvania in celebration of 1991’s NOTHING BUT TROUBLE! In addition to discussing this film’s undeniably powerhouse cast, our hosts delve into the ultimate rollercoaster ride that is “Mister Bonestripper.” Joining the conversation is BALONEY co-founder and acclaimed choreographer Rory Davis, whose love of the movie brings further context to its vastly expensive weirdness. Then, celebrated creator and exec Jeffrey McCrann stops by to talk about this emerging cult classic’s horror parallels, mutant babies, and what it means to have a lifetime of devotion to a true cinematic underdog. From Tupac Shakur to tasty sausages, this episode has it all! Go!

Bonestripper Lyrics - Damn Yankees
Bonestripper Lyrics – Damn Yankees
Ooooh ya got busted On a midnight ride And now ya want justice Well, just step inside
He’s gonna roll ya Like a loaded gun You pulled the trigger I heard the shot You better get your mother Ready or not
Goin’ down (Goin’ down) Bonestripper Ya don’t know what ya got Until you turn to Mister (Goin’ down) Mr. Bonestripper
Do ya feel lucky Are you ready to pay Do ya feel guilty ‘Cause it’s judgment…
