💙Saturday Muse + Last Unboxing for Books That Matter UK box💙 . Hello, everyone! How’s your week? I’d be lying if I said mine was amazing because it was far from that. This week was extremely tough for me and all I know is that it’ll only get worse. Like a thousand times worse. Frankly, my just-got-promoted-colleague starts dumping HIS WORK on me because he thinks he can boss people around now that he’s more superior to the rest of us. Since I’m the youngest at work, I can’t possibly say no to the heavy workload, and thus I involuntarily end up having to work more than 13 hours a day. So I’m constantly exhausted and that’s why you don’t see me very often here or in group chats. And you probably won’t see me in the near future, either.😭 . Anyways, I’m not here to complain about life. I’m here to share my last unboxing for BOOKS THAT MATTER UK’s April box. The theme was BLACK WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH. The book was QUEENIE by Candice Carty-Williams, and according to my friends, this book should be an exciting rep for the diverse community. 💗 . Generally, I had a great time unboxing this one and all the bookish items were incredible. However, due to the poor customer service of this book box company, I won’t be placing any orders anymore. 🙅🏻‍♀️ . For more detailed unboxing/my correspondence with their customer reps, please click here👉🏼 https://readingwithjax.wordpress.com/2019/05/05/bookish-unboxing-books-that-matter-april-black-womens-history-month-why-this-is-my-last-box-from-them/ . ☠️Tell me about your week! Did you have a fabulous one like I hope you do? Or did yours as terrible as mine? . Either way, thankfully it’s Saturday and let’s just take a break from the tiring reality, shall we? 🍹 . #bookish #bookunboxing #booksthatmatteruk #neverbuyagain #queenie #candicecartywilliams #hardcover #birdandblendteaco #nearlynirvana #neverthelessshepersisted #feminist #blackwomeninhistory #booklovers #bookbloggers #booklove #bookreviewers #bookbox #bloggerslife #saturdaythoughts #finallyweekend #bookworms #bibliophiles #readersforlife https://www.instagram.com/p/BxUD6LvHcVP/?igshid=idpxthbj75wx

Happy Monday bookworms! Today I am proudly showing off the July box from @booksthatmatteruk ! I adore the BTM team and wholly believe in what they do! The theme for July is ECOFEMINISM and today is the last day to grab a box! I was thrilled to discover I had never seen the book before and the goodies included are perfect! I can finally try a shampoo bar, something I’ve been wary of trying on my hair (from @hairyjayne ), and the rainbow straw from @sugarandsloth is perfect! There is also a eco fashion guide from @revival.collective and some wild flower seeds 💕 . #booksthatmatter #ecofeminism #femalempowerment #diversereads #diversitymatters #feminism #femninist #writersofcolour #subscriptionbox #subbox #bookishbox #feministreads #bookworm #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #fullybooked #hairyjayne #sugarandsloth #revivalcollective (at Liverpool) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz8y2tTggxb/?igshid=1g5tqhbajuuw9

last month i ordered the @booksthatmatteruk April box, with the theme Black Women History Month 💪🏾 i am super happy with the contents of this box, it really was a no-brainer when i was deciding if i wanted to buy it or not. i mean, feminist, women empowering bookish box? it cannot get better than that 😍 the theme for May is Feminist Dystopia, which i sadly cannot afford to buy right now, but you definitely should, if you can! #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookpic #booktography #reading #bibliophile #currentlyreading #igreads #booknerd #bookblogger https://www.instagram.com/p/BwmktE-HHQr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xvzt11604qbx

✨BOOK REVIEW✨ Happy Tuesday bookworms! I’m trying to catch up on my reviews from last months reads, but I think this may be the last one! I read Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall as part of #femibooksclub August pick. I’ve been wanting to read this one since I’ve seen it all over #bookstagram and I’ve been attempting to learn more about intersectional feminism. This was such a great and important read. Kendall talks not only about women of color but also trans people, LGBTQIA+ people, and disabled women, who have been left out of the mainstream feminist conversation. I learned a lot about what white feminism is lacking and how we need to do better to truly be inclusive. It’s a heavy read as there is so much information presented, so I really had to slow myself down to absorb everything properly. I think everyone should read this and keep coming back to it, ensuring we are being inclusive in gaining equity for everyone. It’s going to take time but it opened my eyes and I definitely want to be more aware and inclusive in my actions towards all womxn, as I did confront my own prejudices in feminism and have a long way to go in practicing intersectionality. I gave this one 5 ⭐️s • The “Check your privilege” card is from @milkandmoonuk which was part of one of my #booksthatmatteruk boxes that I found to be very fitting 💕 • Triggers: racism, sexual harassment, miscarriage, domestic abuse, homophobia, transphobia, eating disorders • QOTD have you read this book? What did you think? https://www.instagram.com/p/CFKST8-AbLY/?igshid=ni65tkrs0ifr

📚Book Haul📚 Second post of the day, who am I?! Someone who was bad about posting over the weekend so now I feel like I’m behind on posts😂 I bought maybe a few too many books this month (12 to be exact) and desperately need to ban myself for the next month at least. Most of the books are nonfiction with a few fiction books across genres sprinkled in. An American Marriage was part of my June #booksthatmatteruk box and The Golden Hour was a giveaway win from the wonderful @mommaleighellensbooknook ❤️ I’m excited to get to all of these but it will take along time, although I did finish Lampie already and will post my review this week! (Side note: I got to take this picture on our new dresser and I was very excited to have a new spot for book photos!) QOTD did you get any new books this month? Any you’re most excited about? https://www.instagram.com/p/CCBp4B5A6Ql/?igshid=1o1lbdqj4ztb2

⭐️Book Review⭐️ Sunday night I finished Things a Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nicholls! I hadn’t heard of this book before until it was part of my March #booksthatmatteruk box, along with this “Deeds not Words” metal bookmark 😁 it’s crazy how last year I barely read any YA novels and now I’ve read 2 in a row (I'm loving it)! • • 🗳The book had a bit of a slow start but it was a nice, easy read so I went through it quickly 🗳I Learned a bit more on the British Suffragette movement compared to the US movement 🗳Some things are so parallel to what we see today in terms of protesting and sexism which I found sad that society can still be like after all these decades 🗳The ending left me wanting more as did the whole book in general. Obviously the Great War takes place at this time (1914-1918) and the book shifts it’s focus to that and looks less at the suffrage movement. I was kind of disappointed in how little the movement was talked about in the second half of the novel 🗳I liked that the three different characters had completely different class backgrounds and experiences but it is disappointing that yet again WOC in the movement have been left out of the narrative. I’m aware that they were also left out of the movement as a whole in this time in history as well, but its not an excuse to continue to leave them out by not having them talked about in a book and giving them representation. 🗳It was Great that it had an f/f relationship too but again their storyline left me wanting to hear more about LGBTQ community and the events they may have organized/attended 🗳It felt like the suffrage movement was fluffed and didn’t really show the hardships of being a young suffragette • • I rated this 3⭐️s because it was a nice plot and a quick read but overall I was disappointed and left wanting more from the story. Triggers: police brutality, loss of loved one, suicidal ideation, PTSD, homophobia Qotd what are you currently reading? • • Prompts #beachcanyouread hosted by @readwithangie “Read a book by an author you’ve never read before” Pride Read 🏳️‍🌈 f/f relationship https://www.instagram.com/p/CBN54d6A0h7/?igshid=19ygft3wtj1uo

Happy Friday! Yesterday I received this month’s #booksthatmatteruk Votes for Women box! I love this subscription box and how perfect is this theme for Women’s History Month 👩‍⚕️👩‍🎓👩‍🍳👩‍🏫👩‍🏭👩‍💻👩‍🔬👩‍🚒👩‍✈️👩‍⚖️ I had never heard of this book before but it sounds interesting and I can’t wait to read it. Plus all these other goodies I’ll get to use 💗 and in a fateful coincidence I also received “Dear Madam President” by Jennifer Palmieri the same day! It was such a lovely coincidence. #qotd how’s your reading month been going? A: Mine has been a bit slow, and I haven’t had much motivation to read but I think it’s partially due to a reading slump after finishing Red Letter Days 🙈 https://www.instagram.com/p/B9rnuB6A_pT/?igshid=xg3owu2kgfgo

👸🏻@booksthatmatteruk Unboxing: Forgotten Women🙇🏻‍♀️ . Hey, guys! How’s your Saturday? I hope you’re doing well! Today I’m going to share another book box I received this week, which was also my first one from an indie feminist company based in the U.K., so hope you enjoy! . The March theme of Books that Matter box is FORGOTTEN WOMEN, perfect for the International Women’s Day this month. I absolutely loved the illustration of the box as well as the three art prints featuring Murasaki Shikibu, June Jordan, and Su Qing, all of who later became famous writers around the world. This box also came with a badge set made exclusively for the box, with beautifully simple design of some historical empresses such as Wu Zetian, Hatshepsut, and Theodora. There was also a nice books-that-matter bookmark along with the book of the month, THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD by Zora Neale Hurston. The glorious copy was from @viragopress and honestly, I was blown away by its gorgeousness!! . What’s more, this box only cost me £20 including international shipping, which was a great deal when it comes to book boxes. ☺️ . All in all, Books that Matter is a rather simple yet delicate book box from a lovely indie store, and I will definitely RECOMMEND it! I’m satisfied with the items and the book, though my package came a little damaged due to the lack of protection. Anyway, if you’re on a tight budget but want to treat yourself with something bookish, go give @booksthatmatteruk a try! 😉 . 🙃Do you consider yourself a feminist? Happy Saturday bookworms! Let me ask you - what does body positivity mean to you? I don’t feel like I’ve ever had a good relationship with my body. I’ve been super fit, then riddled with chronic injury and neither times, did I feel any love for it! Even at my fittest, I was still too fat, too pale, too flabby… basically, not perfectly slim and toned! In my early twenties, an ex-partner told me that ‘attractiveness = skinniness’ and it haunted me for years. It was cruel, telling me I was ‘beautiful’ yet knowing that I didn’t fit that so-called ‘attractiveness’. Needless to say that person isn’t in my life anymore! . I’ve been trying really hard to embrace my body, treat it with more kindness and appreciate the good points! I’m a little heavier than I would like to be ( above what I consider my natural weight for my body) and have been trying to get myself back to that, without focusing on the numbers… but it is SO HARD! We’re programmed to think that a number will solve our issues but sadly it won’t! It is a slow and frustrating process and unravelling the bad thoughts from my head will take time, but future me is excited for what is to come! I will get there! For now, it is 6AM yoga sessions at home and embracing the #bodiposi movement that is inspiring people everywhere! Thank you to @booksthatmatteruk for gifting me this incredible box! It couldn’t be more perfectly timed 💕 . #booksthatmatter #bodypositivity #selflove #selfcare #femalempowerment #diversereads #diversitymatters #feminism #femninist #writersofcolour #subscriptionbox #subbox #bookishbox #feministreads #bookworm #bibliophile #booksbooksbooks #fullybooked (at Liverpool) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1i8C78AknK/?igshid=17pgoebgsn84l

“I READ BOOKS THAT MATTER!” ❤️ . I have incredible/ amazing/ fabulous news bookworms! My favourite subscription box - @booksthatmatteruk - have chosen ME(!!!!!!!!!!!) to represent them! I discovered Molly’s sub box before they launched and knew that this was the box I wanted to support! Molly’s vision of celebrating and promoting diverse voices and equality was so inspiring and I have loved every minute of her journey so far! I am humbled, and thrilled to be given this opportunity and cannot wait to continue to share the books chosen, and the artists, programs and charities Molly partners with! @booksthatmatteruk is a women-run business supporting female-identifying and non-binary writers and artists, as well the underrepresented voices of women of colour, transgender authors, less able women and queer writers ❤️ I am so proud to be a part of something so inclusive and inspiring! . The February box is open for orders now! The theme is Brexit thriller - a hot topic right now! For 10% off your subscription, use my special code BOOKKAT (ships internationally too!)❤️ .
