SUBSONIC PRESENTA: Perdón por arruinar su fiesta de Panteras Negras

Amigos, 2018 fue un año very touching. Una de las razones fue que se estrenó una de las películas de superhéroes más chingonas porque trataba temas acerca del racismo, la familia, el deber que uno tiene con su gente y porque nos volvió a poner en frente el “enfrentamiento” entre Martin Luther King y Malcolm X. Además nuestro rapero estrella y mole de todo lo que hace Subsonic se rifó a producir el disco del filme: Black Panther: The Album.

A ver, estoy que flipo: el BP es un disco de 14 canciones, producido por Kendrick Lamar y TDE; es por eso que en todas las canciones tenemos beats del estilo de este estudio: oscuridad, pesadez, crudeza. Ritmos de boom back de la vieja escuela acompañados de 808, arreglos de synths, teclados y bajos para aumentar la oscuridad y el ambient que de por sí se cargan y casi nada de autoatún, hasta que aparece Travis Scott. A esto debemos agregar que también tenemos algo de trabajo acústico, como en “I Am” de Jorja bebé Smith.

Cabe señalar que todas las canciones fueron producidas casi exclusivamente para el disco, a excepción de algunos casos como “King’s Dead” de Jay Rock, Future y Kendrick, que apareció en el Redemption de Jay Rock, pero que en BP se editó para agregar el verso de Lamar.

Esta madre, además, no se compone únicamente por los versos de Lamar, sino que juntó a un chingo de banda para que cantaran y él les ayudara con algunos coros. Encontramos a: SZA, Khalid, Swae Lee, ScHoolboy Q, 2 Chainz, Saudi, Vince Staples, Yugen Blakrok, Jorja Smith, SOB, RBE, Ab-Soul, Anderson .Paak, James Blake, Jay Rock, Future, Zacari, Babes Wudomo, Mozzy, Sjava, Reason, Travis Scott y El Fin de Semana (The Weeknd). Esto es, todo TDE y sus amiguitos (jejeje). Cada uno de estos morros se rifan versos y coros según les corresponda. Ninguno lo hace mal, pues todos se sienten bien montados a los beats o la pista y cada uno le imprime su estilo y pinta su raya, como ScHoolboy Q diciendo “not even Kendrick can HUMBLE me”. El único que no me gustó fue Travis Scott.

Ahora, la temática del disco, según yo, tiene doble lectura, porque puedes pensar que todo lo que dice es una percepción post-DAMN de Kendrick acerca de sí mismo como representante de su homeland (Compton), o bien es el testimonio de T’Challa (con un paréntesis para Killmonger) sobre cómo es convertirse en Rey de Wakanda.

Algunas canciones del disco hablan sobre cómo es esa conversión en Rey de Wakanda, cómo es llegar a tener esa responsabilidad de representar a un pueblo y cómo es cargar con todo lo que ello implica. Nos dice cómo es sentirse solo y como que nadie está rezando por ti cuando tienes una misión de ese tamaño. Lo mismo podemos pensarlo en Kendrick siendo aquel para Compton, lo cual podemos verlo en rolas como “Black Panther”, “All The Stars”, “I Am” y “Pray For Me”.

Por otro lado, nos encontramos, una vez porque este pendejo problema no se acaba con el tema del racismo. Al igual que otros álbumes de Kendrick, Killmonger habla sobre las condiciones en las que viven millones de negros alrededor del mundo, las cuales no les favorecen y les mantienen segregados y oprimidos, y con cuales han tenido que crecer. Rolas como “X”, “Opps” y “Seasons” nos hablan de cómo es crecer en las calles, sin padres, porque las balas te los quitaron, cómo es ver morir a tus homies y sin ver la salida a toda esa violencia.

A esto debemos agregar que el disco tiene una tripleta dedicada a Killmonger: “Paramedic!”, “Bloody Waters” y “King’s Dead”. En esta nos cuenta la historia de Erik Stevens, un negro que perdió a su padre y que creció en la calle en medio de todas las cosas que ya les dije arriba. Además en “King’s Dead” nos dice cómo es el Rey de todo este pedo y cómo no es nada de lo que los racistas que lo tienen segregado dicen; parecido a lo que Kendrick dice en “The Blacker The Berry”. Así, no sólo nos habla de Killmonger, sino también de Kendrick, y de todos los negros que se encuentran en situaciones similares.

Otro tema que se encuentra en el disco es el amor (por qué todo pinche puto mundo debe hablar del pendejo amor) y podemos encontrarlo en rolas como “The Ways” y “Redemption”. Posiblemente estas rolas se encuentren aquí por el coqueteo entre T’Challa y Nakia, pues hablan exactamente de lo mismo de lo que habla cualquier rola de amor, aunque si lo pensamos en relación con todo lo dicho acerca de Wakanda y Compton, podemos ver que es un amor que se da entre todas las culeradas por las que Kendrick y Stevens tuvieron que pasar volviéndolas crudas.

En fin, Black Panther: The Album, en mi opinión es uno de los discos mejor producidos de ese año, y nos vuelve a mostrar las dos posturas de Kendrick: una como T’Challa y otra como Killmonger. Escúchenlo, vean la película y nada, paz.

2019 Oscars noms

Best Picture

Black Panther being the first superhero movie nominated. I love the movie regardless, but I especially love that it made history. I haven’t been this happy since Moonlight, another unapologetically and uncompromisingly black movie, is the first gay movie to win. I hope its sequels continues to have amazing Black representation, especially for the next villain (crosses fingers for Madame Slay).

BlacKkKlansman. While I would love for BP to win out of preference, for history, and pettiness (cue cries of the pseudo-intellectuals, white MCU stans, dc stans, and [shallow “NOT TRU DIVERSITY” sjws who think that any movie with 1 race per character tokenism and interracial relationship(s) is automatically better at cultural significance than a monoracial POC movie with genuine depth in the way it reps their own]. I wouldn’t mind this equally significant work winning either.

If Beale Street Could Talk snubbed

Green Book, Vice, and Bohemian Rhapsody are nominated. Seriously the Academy Awards could’ve nominated Dirty Computer (I’m counting it dammit), Crazy Rich Asians (I’m surprised that got snubbed), and Spideyverse.

Director

Spike Lee is a brilliant director who has been snubbed for too long (Malcolm X, Mo’ Better Blues, Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever, Crooklyn, Bamboozled, Inside Man, etc.)

Hannah Beachler being the first African American to be Oscar-nominated. She did a fantastic job.
