A very rare c1910 Art Nouveau era locket with a pair of large domed oval red and green heliotrope (aka bloodstone) cabochons. Shiny pyrite inclusions. Mounted in gold filled metal on a gold filled chain.
"Unlike your average cigar, Karl Marx cigars are manufactured by the "Socialist Co-Operators of Reading" Pennsylvania. The customer could be sure their five cents were contributing to a good cause because the profits are "used for the Socialist propaganda."
The cigars were certified as union made by the Cigarmakers International Union of America (which lasted until 1974).
Had a marvellous day with Astrid Schulz doing costume and photography of Florence Wright and Gabriela Heath doing her magic with hair and makeup at the National Theatre Costume house. We were photographing images to use for the poster of Winds of Transition a feature film for next year about the Suffragettes.
It was interesting to follow the process - using all the correct undergarments and transforming a modern girl to one from c1910.
